POINTS TO PONDER

From the Field Helge By

Welcome to the first Charolais Connection of . It has been a busy couple of weeks picturing for ads and sale catalogues, for some of the earlier bull sales. It has been an absolute treat picturing so far in the prairies with a very mild winter. I always find it exciting to get through the bull pens and see the offerings that are being presented to fellow cattle producers, whether they are commercial or seed stock producers. Seeing the first progeny of herdsires that were purchased two years ago would be much like the proud commercial producer selling his calves from his new sires. The commercial bred heifer sales this past fall were very strong, and the reputation herds that have been working hard to produce and market a top replacement heifer were very well rewarded. It is interesting to note, there are more commercial producers breeding their heifers to Charolais or want to buy heifers bred Charolais. ow it is like any breed,

you have to be selective about which bulls you use on your heifers, or you could have a problem, but over the past few years, I have helped many source these bulls with great results. Proof of the acceptance was at the Rock Solid Bred Heifer sale December th, in Southwest Saskatchewan. A pen of commercial heifers bred Charolais topped the sale at , apiece. 5 Simm Red Angus heifers bred Charolais averaged , for Diamond Cattle Co. His other heifers bred Red Angus averaged less at , . The reason many producers are doing this is the calves from their firstcalvers can sell in the big packages, along with the calves off their cows. Some are calving the heifers a cycle earlier, so the calves have a bit more age, but it is working well for them. niform bigger packages of tan or silver calves have been topping the market consistently. In this issue, you will see many advertisements for some of the spring bull sales. Again, I will encourage you to replace any bulls that aren’t doing a great ob for you with the

best bulls you can afford. Half of the genetics of your calf crop is from the bulls, so don’t scrimp on what can add so much value for you. You know what your cows are worth and what the good bred heifers cost last fall, so continue to improve the genetics you are taking to town with good bulls. ow I am off to do some more picturing and touring bull pens for the spring sales. As we get into the bull sales, if on right, Robbie Chomik or I can be of any assistance, please don’t hesitate to give us a call. e are always happy to help in any way we can. All our Charolais Banner and Charolais Connection magazines are online for free at charolaisbanner.com, if you want to go back to read past articles in previous issues. n our site you will also find a complete listing of all the Charolais sales across Canada and most of the Charolais Bull Sale catalogues and videos. e also try to keep the sale news very current on our homepage, so check it out. ntil next time, Helge

DES POINTS À RÉFLÉCHIR

Dans nos champs

Helge By

It has been said that it is getting harder and harder to make money in the cattle business expenses too often outweigh revenue resulting in limited profit potential. hether you agree or not, conse uently many ranchers are very cautious about making additional investments to their management systems. To many it feels as though mounting demands on how beef is being produced are becoming increasingly burdensome, while at the same time technology advancements through innovation are occurring at an increasing pace, with return on investment not always well-defined making implementation decisions at the ranch level challenging. Though cattle production is steeped in tradition it has also seen remarkable advancements in production and management practices in recent decades. Some of these advancement benefits have been clear-cut and have been readily adopted with immediate and direct impacts on the bottom line, others have been uestioned about their value and impact so have therefore been a point of debate. Progressions in genetic information and selection tools is one of the areas where many have been skeptical. As a result, considerable opportunities and profit potential are being left on the table. As a beef cattle producer, you are continually making genetic selection decisions in your breeding programs. Some may find these decisions challenging and difficult, some may find them uite easy, but all know the significant implications that poor genetic selection decisions can have on their business. Some may use all the tools available and some may not. Some may feel confident in their decisions, some may not. For decades, there have been increasing amounts of genetic information made available to those Charolais Connection • February 2021

trying to make breeding decisions fertility, growth, feed efficiency, disposition, calving ease and carcass measures to name a few. tilization and interpretation of this information can feel overwhelming as variations and shifts in the tools continue to evolve faster than we can adapt in some cases. This has added to the uncertainty and skepticism of the tools and information. As animal breeders you undoubtedly know that the observable physical properties of an animal (phenotype) are determined by its genetic potential (genotype) and how that animal is managed (environment), or as geneticists say phenotype e uals genotype plus environment. This is the key concept to understand when considering genetic decisions within your herd. hile an animal may have the genetic potential, whether that potential is fully realized will depend on the environment and management strategies that is experienced by the animal. Therefore, while the genetics you choose are important optimizing those genetic choices is heavily influenced by your management. Evaluating those decisions must be done through individual animal record keeping and benchmarking or comparing the data over time. nly then can genetic decisions be monetized or translated into profit. All beef breeds capture individual data on economically important traits for beef production and conduct genetic evaluations in order to estimate the genetic breeding potential of animals within the breed, which are then reported in the form of EPDs. As data is captured on the animal and its offspring, the accuracy of the estimate of its performance (EPDs) increases. In other words, the EPD will be more accurate in predicting the resulting expression of traits. enetic evaluations and

resulting EPDs for the various breeds have evolved as the economically important traits for the specific breeds and the entire beef industry have shifted. The days of pushing for maximum performance are past and we now understand that optimum and balance is a more desirable goal. Thus, the breed associations’ genetic evaluations have shifted over time. Most of the beef breeds report EPDs on very similar traits (birth weight, calving ease, weaning weight, yearling weight, etc.), however, because these tools were developed to compare and advance the trait within the breed, the EPDs are not necessarily comparable across all breeds. hile genetic evaluations and the EPD model are one of the available tools that can assist in genetic decisions, it is critical to remember that EPDs, while adding valuable information, are an estimate calculated using large amounts of data across many herds. As the science and calculations improve, so too do the models change and evolve to more accurately estimate genetic potential. It is not an exact science, but it is extremely helpful in choosing genetics that will help you reach your business’s production and profit goals. The advancement of genomic technology to interpret genotypes from D A within beef cattle has further improved the accuracy of genetic evaluations, particularly on young animals with limited or no data available on offspring. The genotypic data is commonly integrated into the genetic evaluation to increase the accuracy of the prediction or the EPD. Therefore, an animal’s D A or genotype helps to further predict the potential of the animal and the resulting offspring. Another necessary

tool to help you reach your business’s production and profit goals. The genetic selection tools available to ranchers today are all cumulative and help to make better breeding decisions. o one tool is a silver bullet and none should be used in isolation. sed correctly and collectively they will move you closer to your business’s goals and help drive profit on the ranch. Continuous improvement and advancements in beef cattle genetics is a reality at both the ranch level and the industry level, and so tools will continue to improve and evolve, and so too will our breeding strategies. Therefore, change is a constant we must get comfortable with and we will never complete our ob of genetic selection as continuous improvement drives our success. So what does this all mean for your business It is clear that genetic selection decisions have significant implications on your production and the resulting profit of your business. Every operation has specific areas for improvement and goals the genetics you choose are the foundation re uired to achieve these goals combined with optimum management. Thus, considerable gains (or losses) in profit can be realized through your genetic decisions and so it is worth your time and investment to ) define the goals within your operation that will increase profit potential and the impact breeding decisions have on those goals (i.e. improved fertility, increased weaning rate, increased weaning weight, etc.) ) understand the tools available and how to accurately interpret and utilize them in your operation, and ) measure the traits of importance to achieving your goals within your herd and compare them over time

(benchmark) to ensure advancements are in the direction you desire. There is no doubt that genetic improvements have improved production and added value to the Canadian beef industry. There is also no doubt that further genetic improvements can be made and that access to premium genetics is not the limiting factor. The uestion is Are you utilizing the optimal genetics within your business to drive increased profit Implementation, application and continuous progress of innovative genetic improvement tools can achieve our production and profit goals, whether at the individual business level or across the entire industry. e have the resources we need to translate them into value. If you would like to better understand genetic selection tools or have uestions, please contact one of the beef breed associations, we would be happy to discuss how you can drive profit through genetics on your ranch.

Canada’s First Research Smart Farm The University of Saskatchewan (U of S) and SaskTel, the leading information and communications technology provider in Saskatchewan, will partner to launch a ‘living laboratory’ at the University’s Livestock & Forage Centre of Excellence (LFCE) to test, develop, and demonstrate world-class agricultural technologies. Through a memorandum of understanding (MOU), SaskTel and U of S will focus on “smart farming” research and innovation to accelerate transformation in Saskatchewan’s agriculture industry. Smart farming involves collecting and analyzing “big data” so producers can make informed and sustainable farm

management decisions that improve productivity, the announcement said. Driven by engineering, agricultural, and computer science researchers, this project will focus on conducting research, improving education around smart farming, and testing and validating new agricultural technology ideas and solutions. LFCE would be the first research smart farm in Canada to focus on maximizing efficiency in livestock operations through the latest technology in an interconnected wireless environment, the university said in a news release. SaskTel and U of S will invite key stakeholders in the agriculture industry, including ag tech startups, to identify challenges, propose

solutions, and initiate projects to test and validate these solutions at LFCE. LFCE is a world-class complex of field and science laboratories that brings together every link of the livestock production chain under one roof. Modeling all aspects of raising livestock on the Canadian prairies, it encompasses everything from forage development, grazing management, and environmental sustainability to cattle reproduction, cow/calf management and feedlot health, growth, and productivity. In addition to beef cattle research and education, LFCE is a center for bison reproductive work, vaccine development and disease control, and nutrition.

MANAGEMENT

Buying Power: Bull Selection to Improve Your Bottom Line Beef Cattle Research Council

If it hasn’t happened already, soon your mailboxes and inboxes will be filling up with catalogues for this year’s bull sales. How can you identify which bull is going to work best for your operation? Purchasing the best bull for your operation’s needs starts with good record keeping to identify your operation’s strength and weaknesses. From there you can work to narrow down your search based on your breeding system, genetic goals and budget. The following tips can help guide you in the process of purchasing your next herd sire. It’s not one size fits all when it comes to bull buying. Breeding programs will be determined by operational goals and the management practices that fit those goals. A farm that auctions their calves at weaning may choose a crossbreeding program with high performance, while a farm that direct markets their beef may prefer the uniformity of a single breed. There are many different types

0

of bulls available, and effective sire selection requires an understanding of the available genetics as well as your own operation. Aiming for complementarity of the bull’s genetics to your current cow herd and fit with your operational goals will contribute to increased revenue and reduced costs. Each breed of cattle has distinct traits that allow them to excel in different geographical or managerial environments. Depending on the goals of the operation, a sire can be chosen that has the potential to make positive changes for your operation in the areas you’ve identified for improvement. Consider both the short-term gain and the long-term investment. Bull selection is one of the most important decisions for cow-calf producers, with implications for short- and long-term profitability of the operation. The choice of bull can be immediately seen in the subsequent calf crop. If the operation retains heifers and/or bulls, the

Charolais Connection • February 2021

genetics in the selected bull will be passed down to subsequent generations. Introducing new genetics is a permanent change to the herd, compared to nature of supplements or management practices. As such, bull selection can be seen as a long-term investment into the operation. Research in the area of beef cattle genetics has been growing significantly. There are opportunities to improve profitability through sire selection. However, with a multitude of traits, breed differences, operational goals, and management practices, bull selection is a complex decision. To assist with making bull selection decisions, consistent record keeping will help identify areas of strength and weakness in the herd and guide you towards the type of genetic change you want to see. Over time your records will help monitor whether your changes have made the desired impacts. Once operational goals and breeding programs have been determined, a producer can

focus on specific Expected Progeny Difference (EPDs) to guide their bull selection. Narrow down your search. Given the plethora of EPDs available, trying to sort through ten or twenty individual EPDs that may not have relevance to your particular operation can easily lead to information overload, many breed associations provide selection indexes that combine multiple traits with relevant weightings in order to combine several traits of interest into one number. By focusing on Economically Relevant Traits (ERTs), you can eliminate those bits of information that will not directly impact your operation’s profitability. Economically relevant traits are those that are directly associated with a source of revenue, or a cost. Not all EPDs represent ERTs, instead they use a related (or indicator) trait to estimate the ERT. One of the best examples is birth weight. Decreasing a bull’s birth 2

weight by 5 lbs does not have any associated income or costs but is often used as a bull buying criteria in an effort to reduce calving problems. The actual ERT in this case is calving ease, as an increase in calving problems will reduce calf survival (fewer calves to sell), incurs higher labour costs (pulling calves, or more time spent monitoring), and delays cow rebreeding (younger and lighter calves to sell next year). Birth weight is an indicator trait, and although related to calving ease, birthweight only explains 36-64% of genetic variation between animals in calving ease. Getting your money’s worth. Identifying a fair price during sire selection contributes to higher efficiency in operational economics. To estimate breakeven bull price, a bull valuation calculator has been developed. The purpose is to provide a general idea of how much a bull is worth based on key farm parameters. The value of a bull provides Charolais Connection • February 2021

depends on his individual performance, the environment (e.g., pasture productivity), management (cow:bull ratio) and markets (calf price). For example, large framed bulls require more feed, leading to a higher maintenance cost, but that may be offset by heavier calves at sale time. A bull’s value is delivered through the calves sired over a lifetime, the long-term genetic change of the herd, and salvage value at the end of a productive life. The value provided depends on: • cost factors (i.e., bull maintenance cost and death loss), • performance factors (i.e., years of service, the expected cow to bull ratio, expected weaning rate, expected weight of feeders, and proportion of the calf value attributed to the bull), and • price factors (i.e., expected price of feeders and salvage value). CONGRATULATIONS MCKENZIE RANCH! 2020 SCA Commercial Breeder of the Year

McKenzie Ranch, Delisle, celebrated its 36th year of raising Charcross calves in 2020. David was raised in the Charolais business as his father, Ken, was a purebred breeder starting back in the 1970s. Since moving to full-time farming, they have expanded to 365 bred females and have over 300 calves on feed. The cowherd is mainly red or tan with the boys having some black cows now. They raise their own replacements and believe if you can’t, you really should rethink your cowherd. Silver and white heifers are sorted off and sold as feeders in January. They use Red Angus bulls on some of the cowherd to make their replacement females. They have tried to minimize their inputs with using stockpiled grass and stubble into December, followed by swath grazing, then corn grazing, and finally bale grazing, with hopes of only feeding for a few weeks of the year. David and Leanne have worked on the side; Leanne doing bookkeeping and driving the school bus, and David driving truck, building fence and custom feeding or calving cows. The have been active in their community and David was a 4-H leader and all three of their boys were active in 4-H. David has also served on the Montrose Grazing Corp., Community Pasture Patrons Association of Saskatchewan, Delisle Co-op board, fair and rodeo committees. Leanne still plays hockey and is treasurer of her team and the Delisle Senior Bruins team. Their son, Tyson, is now full-time at the McKenzie Ranch and serves on the McDonald Creek Pasture board. Their son, Ken, works at the Cory mine and bought his grandparents’ acreage. Clayton is the youngest and has cattle of his own and trucks. He plays for the Delisle Senior Bruins. Ken, Clayton, Tyson, Leanne and David McKenzie

CONGRATULATIONS BECK FARMS! 2020 SCA Purebred Breeder of the Year

Beck Farms is a family operated, mixed farming operation based outside of Milestone. The family got its start in the Charolais breed with Wade, Mark, and Jill purchasing four Charolais heifers to show in 4-H in 1987. The Charolais tradition continues with the third generation of the family (Gary and Donna’s grandchildren) consistently showing Charolais and Charolais influenced animals in 4-H, the Canadian Charolais Youth Association Conference, and jackpot shows. In 2021, they will calve 240 purebred Charolais cows. The Beck family hosts an annual bull sale the last Wednesday in February on the farm.

HERD HEALTH

The Downer Cow Just Before Calving Roy Lewis DVM

It seems like I hear of more cases of cows going down in the last month before calving, many times just before calving. These cattle may or may not have been processed, and if processed, given everything from clostridial vaccine, to scours vaccine, to vitamin ADE, to Selenium. What to do to treat and prevent this is the real issue that concerns us all. Many of those that go down very close to calving are low in Calcium, or Phosphorus, or both, and Magnesium may be incriminated as well. When colostrum is being formed there is a large draw of Calcium into the udder and this becomes the main cause of the deficiency tied in with the fact that some cows don’t eat free choice minerals to any degree. There is an increased need for Calcium of around 20 percent before calving and 40% after calving. The low calcium could make her prone to prolapsing her uterus after calving, like we see in dairy cattle. Forage based diets don’t have a lot of Phosphorus so that may be deficient as well. Every producer should have a couple bottles of calcium in his pharmaceutical supply. Have your herd veterinarian recommend which formulation he would like you to have on hand? Then if you have a large animal infusion set at least you can get a bottle of Cal/Phos into her under the skin or into the peritoneum if the product is formulated for that. Keep in mind if given intraperitoneally, it must be administered through a new needle as we don’t want to introduce any infection in the abdomen. If given under the skin, we split the amount up over several locations. There is also an injectable form called Thera calcium and calcium boluses can often be used as well. The quicker we treat them the better the recovery rate. 66

The above treatments work if the cow was identified early enough, otherwise only a large calcium surge by giving the product intravenously will work. Often your veterinarian will deliver this while at the same time listening to the heart to detect any irregularities and checking the cow for other causes such as mastitis injury, twins pulling her down and making her thin. They often will take blood to check to make sure the calcium or other macrominerals are low and what the prognosis is. Most larger clinics can run the diagnostic tests in house. Your veterinarian may even suggest sampling a couple normal cows in the herd to see where the herd is at, as far as macrominerals go. The down cow could also be very old and lacking teeth making mastication and hence digestion difficult. That is why cows with bad udders with pendulous teats, cows getting over ten years or temperament problems are good ones to cull to avoid issues at, or near calving. We can often get these cows to get up. Some we may need to induce to calve if close enough to getting a viable calf. This gets more weight out of the cow’s belly. Keep her in a well bedded spot relatively flat and give her time. If more than one cow, always examine your mineral program and check with your nutritionist to make sure the macro minerals will be available in sufficient numbers. This is where your nutritionist will become invaluable to do tweaking to the overall balance of the ration. The use of chelated minerals may also be started but again, check with the nutritionist. With all these downer cows one must be cognizant; are they quite old, do they have twins in them, etc. All of these other reasons are potentials for going down but not necessarily pointing to a so called “milk fever” situation. There have also been several Charolais Connection • February 2021

instances I hear about where cows go down with almost the same condition where they have been run through and essentially processed very close to calving. It appears the stress of processing and also being close to calving makes them more likely to go down. Processing may have consisted of scour vaccines and selenium shots in some cases, or clostridial vaccines in others. They may have been given singly or in combination. Most of these cows will also get up with a Calcium/Phos /Magnesium product. Also watch this as this whole process may seem to induce some cows and have them calve early. One double strength selenium product even has it on the label that if given in the last month of pregnancy may induce early calving, so I would avoid giving selenium too far along in gestation cows. For the reasons above, I think we should all attempt to not put the heavily pregnant cows through the chute. In the last months of pregnancy there are tremendous demands on their bodies with the rapidly growing calf inside and producing colostrum. If you must, do so as stress free and gently as possible. Think about what you are giving or doing and is there the potential for some negative consequences. The scour vaccines are all given in the five weeks or so before calving. Make sure your trace minerals, both micro and macro, are where they need to be especially from a few months before calving and carry on right into the breeding season. Remember the one downer cow may be the tip of the iceberg and the rest of the herd could be teetering on the edge of a trace mineral deficiency. There is a reason downers at calving happen and we need to correct the problem to prevent other cases developing. If you have treated a downer, make sure to run it by your veterinarian and/or nutritionist as tweaking the ration and supplements may prevent further cases.

INDUSTRY NEWS

Canadian Cattlemen’s Association News Bob Lowe, President

As we now settle into a new year brimmed with optimism and opportunities, our industry must continue to demonstrate resiliency and continue our efforts to overcome the challenges that faced us last year and now into 2021. We could not have fathomed a year ago how the pandemic, a human health issue, could have such potential long-term impacts for Canadian beef producers. While we don’t know what exactly this coming year will bring, we need to remain vigilant and realistic about the pandemic’s legacy on our industry. This is not the time to become complacent. We must keep moving our industry forward to remain competitive on the world stage through strengthening our trade agreements, providing solutions to government to enhance the responsiveness of business risk management programs, and continuing conversations with consumers about where their food comes from and the connection between cattle and the environment, just to name a few. I believe the Canadian beef industry is poised and well-positioned to help rebuild the Canadian economy and secure future growth. That’s why CCA’s response to COVID-19 continues to focus on maintaining business continuity. We remain committed to ensuring our industry can function as best as possible during these uncertain times, whether that be ensuring a smooth sales and calving season by developing protocols for cattle sales and business activities, keeping our borders open for trade, ensuring inspection services remained available and working with processing plants to maintain or to quickly recover capacity. Looking optimistically at the big 2

picture, trade will continue to be an important component of our ability to overcome the economic impacts from COVID-19. While CCA is pleased with the overall improved market access that has been attained in recent years, it is more important than ever we continue to grow our exports by accessing new markets and through the removal of technical trade barriers. As a cattle producer, there is no better time than now to evaluate our farm operations. The run of fall calf sales is fresh in our minds and we know how our calves performed. Many of us are now into calving so we can see what is ahead based on the bulls we used last year. With bull sale season starting, we can use this information to select bulls that will work in our environment and get the results that we are looking for. There is a lot of useful information available and it is often challenging to sort through. Having a good discussion with the breeder will help narrow your search. Selecting the right bull will have a significant influence on the price we receive for our calves and ultimately the experience a consumer will have at their dinner table. I remind and encourage you to be diligent and monitor changing regulations regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. We all recognize how critical bull sale season is to our industry and we need them to continue whether in person or online. Last year, we adjusted how sales were conducted at the onset of the pandemic and it was a great example of the resiliencey of cattle producers across Canada. Most of us have family operations with limited help and we can’t afford to be sick, especially in these winter months when our cattle need to be fed, cows calved and calves doctored. The CCA has developed a set of guidelines for attending and Charolais Connection • February 2021

hosting auction sales in 2021, which is a best practice reference document to help keep everone healthy. There is also useful information available on provincial health authority websites to help businesses navigate and implement protocols to keep their employees safe and remain open as we work to put food on the plates of Canadians. When I speak of being hopeful about the future, we also have a positive story to tell about the connection between cattle and the environment. Through the 2030 beef goals, our industry is demonstrating our commitment to continually improving our stewardship practices. A great example of this is McDonald’s Canada showing their commitment to Canadian beef producers and sustainability by highlighting sustainable beef sourcing in their Quarter Pounder® line of burgers. McDonald’s is now sourcing at least 30 per cent of the beef for the Quarter Pounder line-up from CRSB Certified Sustainable farms and ranches. I’m sure many of you have now seen a number of commercials, which helps share our sustainability story with consumers across Canada. Now more than ever, we are committed to keeping the lines of communication open between industry stakeholders and the Government and ultimately positively impact our producers from coast to coast. Stay tuned for industry updates through Action News, our bi-weekly newsletter, social media channels and regular updates in the COVID-19 resources section on our website.
