POINTS TO PONDER
From the Field Helge By
I always find putting this issue together interesting with the summary of last year’s female sales and the tabulation of the Banner of Show Sire points. The fall sale season was again a great success from coast to coast. The sale summary chart near the back of the magazine shows that 2023 had the second highest average since we started keeping these statistics back in 1984. There were more sales with more breeders putting some females in their bull sales and more lots sold as a result. This was also the second highest gross of sales, only surpassed by the record setting 2021 sales. The price of quality genetics is at an all time high with exclusive semen, embryos and flushes showing increased interest and prices. When the top bulls and females command the prices they do, it does justify the price of these flushes and embryos in the breed’s top females. On the cover and at the back of this issue, you will also find the Banner of Show Sires (BOSS) tabulations and which animals and sires ranked at the top of the BOSS shows. As there is no EPD for eye appeal or structural soundness, the show ring still has a place as one more tool in the selection process. Interest for World Congress this summer in Canada is gaining momentum with many breeders planning to participate at the events across the country by bringing cattle to display to the Charolais enthusiasts from around the world. If you have
any questions, or want to be a part of the events or the sale, give us a call. I recently read an article on the BEEF website that was interesting. It was the result of a survey conducted by Kansas State University for the Kansas Beef Council. In the survey consumers completed a set of questions in which they ranked the importance of nine beef product attributes when making purchase decisions. Survey respondents indicated their three most and three least important among nine product attributes. Attribute rankings are summarized in the enclosed chart. The chart reports percentage of respondents that rated each attribute as Most Important (positive green bars), Least Important (negative red bars) and Net (purple line – Most Important plus Least Important). Product freshness, safety, price and
flavour were the top ranked attributes overall with the two most often ranked Most Important being product freshness and price. This is a common result found in several recent studies. We are poised for a great bull selling spring, but you still need to work on staying in touch with past customers and reaching out to invite new customers to your bull pen. If you have any questions, or if Robbie Chomik or I can be of any assistance, please don’t hesitate to drop us a line. Now it is off to picture and video some more bull pens for later sales and ads and I hope the weather will be our friend. Good luck with calving and I look forward to seeing many of you down the sale trail this spring. Until next time, Helge

DES POINTS À RÉFLÉCHIR
Dans nos champs Helge By

As all of you know, the cost of everything is on the rise and we need to all do what ever we can to cut costs. The expenses at the CCA are no different. We are constantly looking at ways to cut costs, without jeopardizing the level of service we provide. The CCA staff have come up with a few ways, and with our members’ help we can do that. One of the biggest expenses we have is our mailing cost. The cost of paper, Canada post charges, and the staff time that it takes to print, stuff envelopes, and then deliver to the post office is a very significant expense. There are alternatives to mailing invoices and certificates. You have the option in your account to simply check a box and all your invoices will be emailed to you. You also have the option to put your certificates on a print hold, this is very helpful especially on the bulls that you will be selling in the spring. NEW! Online Notification & E-Blasts The CCA has moved to an electronic means to notify their members of important information. Moving forward the CCA will be using E-Blasts to notify members of the CCA’s Annual Meeting and any By-Law changes 30 days prior to said Annual Meeting. If you are currently an online member, please keep your account email up to date to be able to receive important information from the CCA Office. Would you like to be a “paperless” member? The CCA office can send invoices and reports to you via email! This allows you to complete and receive documents in a timely manner. Contact the CCA office today to make the switch online! - If you are an Online Member: CCA Members can opt to be paperless under Charolais Banner • February 2024
‘My Account’ - ‘Details/Options’ ‘Paperless Options’. Select Deliver invoices via email and default all registrations as held for online transfer. Then click ‘Save’ at the bottom of the page. - If you are a paper member: Please have an active email address and contact the CCA office today to update your account to paperless. To update your account email/ information please email: cmatthews@ charolais.com or see the membership amendment form listed on our website. (Resources - Forms - Signing & Account Authority Application) In August of 2023, the CCA and the American International Charolais Association officially launched our joint EPD evaluation, with the Joint Evaluation we are doing nine EPD runs per year, August through April. The EPDs are published on the first of each month. To have your data included in the run, you must have it submitted by the 20th of the prior month. Example: if you want your data in the March 1 release date, you must have all your data submitted by February 20th. We have seen slight changes in our EPDs but for the most part they have been positive, if you do see a drastic change, please notify me so we can examine why. The Percentile Ranking are still calculated within the Canadian herd book only. The World is Coming to Canada From June 21st to July 6th, 2024, Canada will be hosting the World Charolais Congress. This event will take place from Ontario to Alberta. There will be many opportunities for breeders to display cattle or just come out and be a part of this event. Complete details and registration information can be found at www.charolaisinternational.com or contact Helge or Candace By charolaisbanner@gmail.com.

WORLD AGRICULTURE
Kentucky Agriculture
A very strong 100 plus Charolais Junior heifer show with the trademark dyed green shavings at the North American International Livestock Exhibition (NAILE)
Craig Scott, Candace and I were invited down to Louisville, Kentucky, by the American International Charolais Association (AICA). David Hobbs, Vice-President of Operations for the AICA, was instrumental in gathering the funding and putting this program together. We were hosted for six very informative and interesting days with exceptional hospitality. Arriving on November 8th we were hosted for the following two days by Tim Hughes, of the Kentucky Department of Agriculture. Not only was Tim a wealth of knowledge of the Ag industry in the state but he also toured us through some great herds, interesting places
Impressive M6 Bells and Whistle donor female at Jeffries
Yearling heifers at Jeffries
and even took us back to his place for a wonderful smoked brisket lunch the first day. What a great ambassador for Kentucky. Along with Tim on these first couple of days was long time AICA fieldman Floyd Wampler. His decades of experience in the purebred cattle and Charolais industries was very beneficial and added much to our tour. We started with a tour to the quality herd of Paul Jeffries. Decades in the business, he has a very consistent, quality spring and fall calving program with a no-nonsense approach. They sell about 40 bulls per year in the two Nextgen sales in Kansas. Our next stop was at Harrod Farms, which is a small but very competitive in the show ring herd. Jeff’s kids were very active in the Junior programs in the past. The herd is 100% AI, every animal is halter broke and they have a super quiet herd all wanting to be scratched.

Our first stop on Day 2 was to the operation of John Allison. Running 200 cows, this retired engineer calves in the spring.
Beautiful rolling hills at Eden Shale
A tour of Buffalo Trace bourbon distillery which is the largest in Kentucky with over 200 years of heritage
A quick visit to the very impressive Kentucky Legislative building

Dan Miller explains how the Gogrid is incorporated into some of the outdoor pens and feed bunks with gravel filled holes and base that keeps the water draining away and has lasted well over many years

Eden Shale Research Farm was a very interesting tour. It is run by the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Association. The state of Kentucky is very agriculture friendly. They utilize the money that comes from the tobacco industry lawsuit to support many ag initiatives with Best Management Practices. This 961-acre farm runs a commercial, spring calving, cow/calf operation. They incorporate and test many innovative projects that are feasible for the industry to use. Mud management is a major obstacle, and they host many tours of producers from across the country, university students and extension personnel. Their website is edenshalefarm.com. We went for lunch and a tour of the very impressive Blue Grass Stockyards just north of Lexington. This cooperative has seven markets which sell 450,000 head/year. There are sales six days a week spread over the seven markets with 2/week plus special sales at this flagship facility. There are 175 full or part time employees.

We did see a horse sell for $1,750,000

We got lucky with a sale going on at Keeneland. This two-day 1,000 lot sale was on day two and is more a breeding stock sale and not their large yearling sale, which is held in September. $1,000 catalogue fee and 5% commission lets this facility, staff and organization be first class. 23
Entrance to Churchill Downs
Churchill Downs racetrack
You can’t go to Louisville without going to Churchill Downs, the home of the Kentucky Derby, and touring the track and the museum. This was our Saturday morning before spending time at the Charolais Junior heifer show and visiting with exhibitors in the barns. Sunday and Monday morning we were able to sit in on the AICA Board of Directors and Committee meetings. This was very informative, and I must say that Craig Scott has developed a strong working relationship with the AICA and was asked to participate in some of the discussions to see how his office, the board and Canadian membership handle some situations. The final event we attended was the 55th U.S. National Show.
A beef Sunday was sold in the Kentucky Beef Producers booth in the food court of the exhibits Grand Champion Female — LMAN MS SHELLEY 251K (WC Milestone 5223 P), exhibited by Sara Sullivan, Dunlap, IA .This heifer was also Grand Champion Charolais of the 100 plus head Junior Heifer Show and Supreme Champion Junior Heifer over all breeds.

ASSOCIATION NEWS
Maritime Charolais Association AGM Nancy Milton
The Maritime Charolais Association’s Annual General Meeting was held in Amherst, Nova Scotia, on Saturday, December 16th. Breeders from all three maritime provinces, as well as one breeder from Newfoundland, were in attendance. There was no change to the Board of Directors or the Executive. Brett Francis, Crapaud, PE, remains President; Jacy McInnis, Bass River, NS, is Vice-President, and Nancy Milton, Nine Mile Creek, PE, is Secretary/Treasurer. Members heard reports from Josh Redden, Windsor, NS, the Maritime Member-at-Large on the CCA Board of Directors; Jacy McInnis, Manager
of the Maritime Beef Test Station (which celebrated its 50th year in operation with a banquet in April 2023), and from the Atlantic Elite Charolais sale committee. The Atlantic Elite Charolais sale will continue on a biennial basis, with the next one being set for November 2025. The MCA continues to sponsor local Charolais shows and recognizes every 4-H member in the maritimes who completes a beef project with a purebred, registered Charolais with a $50 annual award. Junior Elizabeth Heighton, River John, NS, spoke favorably about her experience at the 2023 CCYA Jr.
Show & Conference in Manitoba. She was a recipient of both the Maritime Charolais Association’s Jr. Travel Bursary and the newly announced “East-to-West Friends of Charolais” Foundation Bursary, of which she was very appreciative. The Association announced Marshall Crowley, of Oxford Junction, NS, as the 2024 recipient of the MCA’s Commercial Producer of the Year Award, which will be presented next summer at our annual picnic. Islanders Brett Francis (Lady Fane Charolais) and Nick Green (Kingston View Farms) are planning to host the 2024 annual summer picnic and farm tour for maritime breeders in late July.

NEWS
Canadian Cattle Association President’s Report Nathan Phinney
The success of our work can often be attributed to our focus on relationships. The Canadian Cattle Association (CCA) puts significant effort into investing and building relationships within our industry, the broader agricultural community, and with policymakers and influencers here at home and on the world stage, to help advance the priorities of Canadian cattle producers. The start of a new year sees CCA’s engagement with industry stakeholders ramp up with numerous meetings, conferences, and events taking place. During the pandemic we discovered new ways to connect virtually, but nothing beats the value of face-to-face interactions, a simple handshake, or productive conversations over dinner or a cup of coffee. Over the course of the next few months, CCA board members and staff will be travelling across the country to attend the annual general meetings (AGM) of our provincial member associations. This is a tremendous opportunity for us to share updates on the work undertaken by CCA, answer questions from grassroots producers, and engage in meaningful discussions to better understand the concerns of producers from a regional perspective. These insights, coupled with the perspectives shared by our board members, help guide the development of policy priorities that meet the needs of producers across the country. This engagement is very timely, with our AGM just around the corner in March. Mid-January also saw a delegation from the Canadian Cattle Young Leaders (CYL) program and the Canadian Cattle Youth Council visit
Denver, Colorado. This trip, planned in coordination with the Consulate General of Canada in Denver, included meetings, site visits, and networking opportunities with the goal of building alliances, advancing Canada’s advocacy priorities especially when it comes to the importance of trade between our two nations, and fostering cooperation between our industries. This year’s delegates also had the opportunity to take in the National Western Stock Show and participated in sessions at the Colorado Cattlemen’s Association Mid-Winter Conference. This annual trip to Denver is an excellent opportunity for our industry’s future leaders to learn more about beef and cattle trade between Canada and the United States (U.S.) and start forging relationships with their counterparts south of the border. A special thanks goe s out to the Consulate General of Canada in Denver for their work building an interesting program for our young leaders and providing funding to help support their travels. If you know of anyone who would benefit from these types of experiences, please encourage them to consider applying to the Canadian CYL program. Applications are now open for the 2024-25 program year. Please visit www. canadiancattleyoungleaders.ca for more details. To round out our engagement efforts in January, I had the opportunity to travel to Orlando, Florida, along with Tyler Fulton, CCA Vice President and CCA staff, to participate in the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association’s (NCBA) convention and trade show. In the U.S., this is where the American beef industry meets annually to

learn, network, and advocate. It’s the perfect venue for us to learn more about the issues facing American cattle producers; better understand the policy discussions happening in the U.S. and how they could impact our industry; and engage in bilateral and trilateral discussions on topics of mutual interest with the leadership teams of the NCBA and the Confederación Nacional de Organizaciones Ganaderas (CNOG) in Mexico. One issue that we are collectively keeping our ears to the ground on is the amended rule for the voluntary “Product of the USA” label, which is expected to be released in the next few months. CCA has worked alongside the Government of Canada to express our concerns with this proposal. Earlier last year, we submitted a formal response to the proposed amendments, but we realize that our best allies are American cattle producers who share our concerns about how the proposed amendments to this rule can negatively impact the integrated nature of the North American beef supply chain and disrupt the flow of cattle between our countries. It is through conversations with our fellow beef producers south of the border that we can find solutions to common problems. These conversations have continued with producers at state meetings held in late 2023 and in early 2024. We are monitoring this regulation and will oppose any disruptions to our integrated beef supply chain. As Parliament resumed in late January, our trade file continues to be at the forefront with Bill C-282: An Act to amend the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Act (supply management) in the Senate. ..continued on page 30

CANADIAN CATTLE ASSOCIATION, CONTINUED FROM PAGE 28 As this Private Member’s Bill moves through the Senate, CCA is steadfast in our advocacy efforts against this Bill. Outreach efforts with Senators and raising the alarm through our communications channels will continue until this Bill is defeated. These efforts will be further amplified through our partnership with like-minded organizations whose industries are trade dependent. We encourage beef producers to share personal videos explaining why
trade is important to their operation and how Bill C-282 is detrimental to growth and sustainability of our industry. Please send your videos to advoacay@cattle.ca. Another key trade priority will be the Say No To A Bad Deal campaign to oppose the United Kingdom’s (UK) accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for TransPacific Partnership (CPTPP). This agreement is a bad deal for beef producers as it leaves significant

non-tariff barriers in place that will prevent us from fully exporting to the UK. The Canadian beef industry will continue to oppose this deal until these barriers are resolved. Our industry depends on science and rules-based trade. We need to stand up for free and open trade principles and we are doing so by showing up and actively participating in these crucial discussions. Trade is essential to the growth and future sustainability of our industry.

HERD HEALTH
Common Calving Malpresentations and Solutions Roy Lewis DVM
Calving season is upon us and I know calving issues have been greatly reduced over the years. The things we can’t control are malpresentations, which need to be recognized and acted on. There are some cows that can deliver a calf with a foot back, but these are very rare indeed so most have to be helped. One still needs to have sharp observation skills knowing when a cow is not acting right or has been straining for an hour with no progress. Then there are the instances where one recognizes only one foot is protruding out the birth canal or when only the head is presented. These are obvious signs the cow is in trouble and the quicker we can intervene the better. Calves will be saved and this has no relation to a hard calving. We need to intervene simply because of the malpresentation. I know most of you have tons of calving experience so this may act as a review, but if teaching the next generation there may be merit in reading this article. With a forward presentation there needs to be three things present. If two feet with the head just behind are not present one must go searching. These cases will require some work and manipulation inside the birth canal so use two obstetrical sleeves held up with elastics or held on with a calving suit. The choice is yours but the bottom-line is being able to clean up the cow appropriately and keep yourself especially your arms very clean. If doing this by yourself, best is a maternity pen and have the tail tied to one side. I like booster cable clamps which will give way if the cow goes down etc. To make it easier on yourself try and have the cow
standing for all manipulations. When one is looking for a missing head or leg back take some time to explore and find out where the missing part is. If the head is back, which side is it turned to, or is it underneath? Which leg is back and how far back is it? Over the years, I have had many farmers phone with what they thought was a backwards calf only to find the head was pushed so far around the calf appeared to be coming backwards. An easy way to determine if back versus front legs is with front legs the first two joints should bend the same way. Mistakes are made when a producer feels the elbow joint which is the third joint on the front leg and jumps to the conclusion that it is the hock on the back leg. This is a common mistake. Depending on what is protruding to get room to lift up a retracted leg, one must repel the other leg and head further back into the birth canal. This will take potentially lots of lube and you having to fight against the cow's contractions. An epidural may help in some situations but most are done without. If you have caught the cow early, it may be a matter of going in and pulling the retracted foot up. Make sure and cup around the hoof so as not to poke a hole in the cows uterus. Once you get all three things lined up then proceed on with the normal calving. Sometimes the head and one leg are both through the vulval lips. This means the missing leg is considerably repelled and if the calf is still alive the whole mass must be pushed into the vagina to get room. Severe ones may need a C-section if the calf is still alive, or a fetotomy by your veterinarian if the calf has died, but the vast majority can be pushed in and turned into a normal delivery.
Keep in mind especially with heifers, the calf may have been coming normally but because of a lack of room, with further pushing the head or one foot is reflected to make room. If one gets everything lined up again there may be a lack of room and a c-section may be necessary. When calves have died in utero, I find it is common for a limb to be down, possibly from lack of rigidity, but again they need correcting and at least get the calf out so the cow may go on to be able to adopt a twin or orphan. If the head is back, one must again figure out which side it is deflected to and which direction it will be pulled around. The quicker it is found the easier this should be, but one can use the legs as a handle to repel the calf in to open up the room in the uterus. Several techiques include cupping the hands under the head and swinging it around, to grabbing the calf’s nostrils, to using a head snare. An extra long chain properly placed through the mouth and behind the ears will mimic a head snare. All techniques will depend on the force necessary to get the head to pull around. Once corrected I always check to see if the calf is alive by putting my hand way inside its mouth and see if I get a bite or swallow gag reflex. Again, if you have to correct the head back, realize it may be cased from lack of room in the pelvis. I am sure you realize malpresentations are increased with twins so always check for a second calf. Recognize your limits and if getting no significant progress after 20 minutes, call for backup. This may be a more experienced person or your veterinarian, whichever you feel is more appropriate. ..continued on page 36

OBITUARY, CONTINUED FROM PAGE 37 attitude throughout that time. He spent these last days at Fairmont Extendicare and the family is grateful for the compassionate care and companionship from very special care staff. Ben held a special place in his heart for each of you, in particular Theresa. Ben and Dorothy were married for 48 years until her passing in January, 2021. Their relationship was one of teamwork and love for farm life and travels to New Mexico and British Columbia. Ben’s nieces and nephews consider
themselves greatly blessed to have had such a beautiful example of positivity and Christ’s love in their uncle and great uncle, including Mark (Trish) Lohues and George (Angela) Lohues, and numerous other nieces and nephews, who will miss him deeply. His great nieces and nephews were the light of his life. He was proud of all of them, and he would give them his full attention and love. His face lit up, he would raise his hand to his forehead and grin from ear to ear when he would see those close to him enter his room.

Charolais Banner • February 2024
Ben’s extended family was very important to him. His brothers were his close friends and he treasured them and their families. He will be missed by his siblings Mary, Riek, Ann, Fenny, John, Joe, Ria, and Wilma, as well as their spouses, inlaws and extended family. Ben’s purebred cattle, faith and family were the center of his life. We will always remember and be inspired by the example he gave to us in each visit and phone call of positivity, awaiting delight in every moment and Christ’s love for all.

2023 B.O.S.S. SHOW BULL HONOURS
We would like to commend all the Charolais Exhibitors in 2023 for a job well done. A great amount of effort and expense goes into exhibiting cattle. We often wonder how many of us realize the spin-offs and the free promotion the breed receives from these few breeders who carry the torch for the Charolais industry. Congratulations on a great year and thank you! The Banner Of Show Sires, or B.O.S.S., was developed in 1984 and is administered by the Charolais Banner. It is the only purebred publication that sponsors such a program. The B.O.S.S. program was set up as a method of keeping track of the winnings of the Charolais animals in the show ring. The shows that receive B.O.S.S. designation are decided by the Charolais Banner and spread out evenly across Canada. B.O.S.S. Points are awarded accordingly: By Category 20 pts. Grand Champion 15 pts. Res. Grand Champion 10 pts. Sr. & Jr. Champions 5 pts. Res. Sr. & Jr. Champions
By Class 10 pts. – 1st 8 pts. – 2nd 6 pts. – 3rd 4 pts. – 4th 2 pts. – 5th
Shows with 80 plus entries received double points; 40 plus entries received full points; 30 – 39 entries received ¾ points and less than 30 entries receive ½ points. The B.O.S.S. program has become an effective method of recognizing the most popular bull and female on the show road each year. The B.O.S.S. Chart is very detailed and takes hours for our administration to ensure accuracy. We do believe the chart provides a number of great results in which we can base decisions. After all, the popularity of type is a very important marketing tool. The B.O.S.S. chart breaks down points given to animals from all the B.O.S.S. designated shows and tabulates bulls gaining 10 points or more. The chart also illustrates all bulls from 1984 to the present that have gained 250 points or more.
2023 B.O.S.S. Program Results Are As Follows: 103 bulls received points The top 5 B.O.S.S. Bulls gaining points were: 5. M&M Outsider 4003 4. SVY Trust 6H 3. CCC WC Redemption 7143 Pld ET 2. YOUTH ACTIVITIES
Madisyn Robertson, Neepawa, MB Intermediate 1st Place - $200 Who is my role model within the agriculture industry? How have they impacted me? As a young child, I had favourite television cartoon characters that I idolized. I would run around the house enacting their world-saving antics. As I grow older, I surround myself with people and situations that inspire me to be a better version of myself. When asked, “Who is your role model within the agriculture industry, and how have they impacted me,” my mind does not just go to one person. It goes to many people that I have always looked up to - my parents, friends, family, and even my teachers are just a few people who have influenced me into the person I am becoming and the person I wish to be in our industry. If I look at myself through the eyes of someone looking up to me, I want to be seen as a passionate, strong, caring person, not afraid to step outside my comfort zone and willing to fight for what I believe. At this stage in my life, when I look at these character qualities, they lead me to one person Andre Stepper. I have known Andre my whole life. As a fellow Charolais breeder, Andre started his cattle showing career with my grandpa Bert and my dad, Paul. There isn’t a time I don’t remember Andre always making time for a visit. When I first entered the show ring at age six, I remember looking back to see my support crew at the gate, and Andre was right there cheering me on. The feeling of being recognized was overwhelming, and I remember hoping I could be

that person cheering someone else on. As a result, at every show I am at, unless I am in the ring myself, I make myself available to help a young member in the ring, grab a halter, or simply champion for the younger members - giving high fives, a hug, or a supportive word. Our local 4-H club held the first in-person show post-COVID this past summer. As a senior member, I recognized several young members who had never participated in a show. I asked two other experienced members to assist me with the new members in the show ring. We each chose members to help - providing mentorship in the ring, such as which way to walk, how to set up, when to comb, and keeping them calm while bolstering their confidence. At our summer all breeds youth show, a younger, shy member decided to participate in team judging at the last minute but had no partner. As I have witnessed Andre many times, I dropped what I was doing without hesitation and volunteered to help. Like Andre, I did not do these things for recognition or award. Still, the feeling of empowerment, the opportunity to learn something new, and the boost of self-confidence for myself far outweigh any minor inconvenience of doing something good for someone else. Andre is an outstanding showperson, and I have spent many hours watching him in person and on video studying his technique. His calming influence and determined nature are tough to beat. Showmanship is the ultimate display of an individual’s characteristics, and as such, I have worked hard to emulate those behaviors in the show ring and outside. Since 2018 I have been the president of the Manitoba Junior Charolais Association. As the oldest member of our association, there was a steep learning curve on procedure and organization. Andre has mentored our board by explaining each
position’s roles and responsibilities, providing guidance on procedures when needed, and explaining why such actions were necessary. As a result, our executive can now run an organized and effective meeting with little adult intervention, which will serve all of our members well on other boards in the future. Giving back to organizations that Andre and his family are involved with is very important. In 2018, when the Manitoba Junior Charolais Association hosted the Canadian Charolais Youth Association Conference, Andre donated a bred female to help fundraise, which provided worthwhile funds, and a junior member also won the female. Andre has worked hard to help this young individual grow their herd by purchasing their bull calf in exchange for female sale credit. Andre has recently donated animals to raise funds for the Friends of the Canadian Charolais Association and STARS. There is no personal gain other than the feeling of trying to do good in a world full of wrong. I have chosen to try and do my part by supporting valuable organizations and volunteering my time to do good in my community. Andre was a director with the Canadian Charolais Association for many years. Once he had his own family, he realized a need at a grassroots level and took on the challenge to educate people on the importance of agriculture. Andre strongly advocates for Ag In the Classroom - frequently loading baby calves to his children’s school for show and tell; inviting classrooms to the farm to tour the calving barn or animals on pasture. He is passionate about explaining the way of life and the importance of agriculture to the environment and society, which has encouraged me to educate my friends and acquaintances who are not from our rural backgrounds. I continue to find ways and ideas to promote

agriculture in my community and everyday life, whether in a speech to classmates, disputing with facts educational materials presented in classrooms, or just sharing positive social media posts. As a director with the Manitoba Beef Producers, Andre has been able to lobby the provincial government for agricultural support programs. In 2021/2022, Andre was part of a successful committee that obtained an AgriRecovery Drought Assistance Program. Amid winter, calving over 600 cows, and attending children’s sports and activities, Andre tirelessly promoted the program on social media and print media, physically phoned producers, and explained what steps were necessary so that our industry could survive the drought. He made time for everyone who asked a question, applauded, or critiqued with unwavering confidence. While I realize it takes a team, if a small-town farm kid like Andre can implement massive changes for our industry, I realize there are no limits to what I could achieve. He has taught me to dream big and aim for the stars. Andre has broadened his focus from a Charolais herd to Angus and Simmental in the last few years. This “sky’s the limit” attitude has encouraged me to chase my dreams and think outside the box. As I approach the end of my high school career and start focusing on university and my future, Andre has helped me realize my strengths and how I can make a difference in the world and has encouraged me to step outside of my comfort zone and follow my heart. During the past two spring breaks, I have had the opportunity to share a stall at the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair and work alongside Andre’s daughter Brynn and son Brayden, which provided me with a roundabout way to give back to Andre, a tiny iota of what I have learned from him. It also allowed for one-on-one conversation and Andre’s guidance on my future aspirations and goals. Andre treats everyone, regardless of
gender, age, or demographic, with the respect he expects in return. He never makes anyone feel as though he is rushed or short on time and is always keen to learn. Andre is very insightful and consistently draws out the best in every person. He is a man of integrity, operating on a handshake and trust. J.K. Rowling says: “If you want to see the true measure of a man, watch how he treats his inferiors, not his equals.” Andre always does what is necessary to bring everyone up to his level without self-gain or accolades. Andre also exemplifies time management - effort into his industry and business yet, entirely devoting himself to his family. Andre is a keen study of genetics and pedigrees and what breeding works together to achieve the best results. He is observant of the full circle benefits of cattle on grasslands, to what plants and insects help his natural habitat thrive. Listening to Andre talk in person and observing his many educational Facebook videos has helped me realize the path I wish to explore in my postsecondary years. I have always been interested in genetics and realize there is much more to learn and explore in that field of study. Andre has encouraged me to be proud and assertive without being overconfident. He has inspired me to give back to younger members of our industry, whether that is assistance at a show, teaching someone how to clip, fit or wash, explaining the conformation of a good animal, or the benefits agriculture has in our world. I have learned that I can grow from each opportunity, whether I win or lose. I have been fortunate to be awarded for my leadership skills at several youth events, which has inspired me to continue improving my skills, which motivates my competitors to work harder, thus, raising the bar for all. I want to be the young adult from whom my peers seek advice or guidance. With simple gestures and actions, Andre inspires me to be the best version of myself that I can be. All in all, Andre has

inspired me not to set limitations on what I can be or what I can achieve and to keep moving the goalpost. Braden Scott, Olds, AB Intermediate 2nd Place - $100 Who is your role model and or mentor within the agriculture industry? How have they impacted you? Out of all the people I have had the pleasure of meeting and learning from, it’s very hard for me to narrow down who would be my mentor in the agricultural community. First I would have to pick my dad, lots of what I have learned over the years has come from him. Next I would put my mom, she has always taught me different things about this program as she wasonce a member in it. All of the help, support and guidance can’t be put into one or two people because there are many since I have been in this program. The reason I really enjoy being a part of this industry is because of the people I surround myself with when we participate. When I think of role models or mentors in the agricultural community the first name that pops in my head would be my dad. He is the reason I get to participate in the shows and events that get me into agriculture. Each time we’re somewhere competing for that buckle, his lifetime of experience pours out and gives me enough to help get me there. My dad’s been in agriculture all his life and to see him stay in something he enjoys doing and excels at, shows me what it takes to get me there. From Dad growing up on a farm and participating in junior shows, to taking livestock photos and then becoming the general manager for the Canadian Charolais Association shows me his hard work and dedication to his line of work. When I think of a role model I picture someone who I strive to be like and when it comes to someone I look up to in the agricultural industry
my dad fits it perfectly. My Mom doesn’t just act as a role model for this industry but for everything in my life. She grew up farming and raising cattle and knows how this industry works. My mom is always there to give me little tips about how to excel every chance I get, when participating in shows and events. I have gained so much knowledge from her, not only about the agriculture world but about life in general. I would say lots of my success has come from her tips and advice when partaking in certain shows. I am a second generation CCYA member with my mom being a member years ago. To know that I am doing the same thing she was but learning how to do from her shows me how much of a mentor she is to me. When I look at all of her prizes and trophies she has won I know I may not ever get there but I also know that I have someone with an exceptional amount of experience there to help me. My mom has been a huge part of my success not only in the agricultural industry but throughout my whole life. There’s no way I could name only one or two people that I look up to because there’s so many names that have had a positive impact on me in this industry. When I think about people I want to be like and that have helped me the most would be CCYA Alumni. From teaching, including and helping me over my years in the cattle industry. Some names that come to mind when thinking of role models would be Kord Phillips, Bret Marshall, Evan and Logan Jamieson, Tyson Black and Brandon Fraser have all stood out to me. From helping me around the barn, to giving me advice on how to become better and being overall ambassadors to this industry. These people have had a huge impact on not only how well I do in this industry but how much fun I have participating in it. Someone who puts their trust in me with their cattle at events shows me what type of person they are. Helping people out and giving them a chance is a quality I deeply admire in someone.
Something hopefully I can display too. These many people all act as role models and mentors in their own way in this industry and help make it so enjoyable. Throughout my lifetime in agriculture there are many people who have stood out as leaders and mentors through my eyes. As a kid growing up in the town and not getting the farm life these people make me feel more than welcome when participating when I can. These people are welcoming and treat me as if I had a farm life. I have gained so much from working with these people over my years of being involved. A mentor or role model is someone you look up to, respect and learn from and these people are all way more than that to me. Indy Fowler, Bashaw, AB Junior 1st Place - $125 My Role Model I have been in the cattle industry for almost my entire life, and this person has impacted me the most throughout the years. He has helped me and pushed me past my limit so I could succeed now and in the future. Tyler Bullick is mentally and physically strong even when he is at his lowest, he works for what he wants, and he is constantly giving me tips on how I can improve. Through all of the years I have known Tyler I have never seen him break down mentally, even when he is under extreme pressure. When Tyler had his accident you would expect him to pass out, or show some form of pain. But he was in fact still talking about his cows to Tim as he was being loaded into the STARS helicopter. Through the whole 74 days of being in the hospital Tyler had an amazing attitude, no matter how much pain he was in. To me that takes a lot of strength mentally and physically in order to stay that calm after running yourself over with a tractor. Another example of how strong Tyler is is
when his Dad (Tim Bullick) passed away. Tyler was heartbroken, I had never seen him that low before. Even though he was and still is missing his Dad immensely Tyler managed to stay strong through the whole thing. He knew the next morning that cows still needed to be fed and that we would be okay. Tyler has taught me to be mentally strong in a tough situation, and in the show ring. This is practiced by chasing cows with him every summer, now that is where I need to be mentally strong. Tyler is always working, no matter where he is, whether that is at a show, at home, on the road, or even in the hospital. This isn’t just doing paperwork all day either, despite his injuries Tyler is still tying up calves with me everyday, and of course doing his tractor chores. Tyler’s hard working ethic has gotten us very far in the cattle industry. For example, we were the first Charolais breeders to win the Farmfair Supreme, and are still the only Charolais breeders to win. Not only are we successful in the show business, we are also successful in the sales business. Tyler has been working hard to get our sale bulls ready for February every year. Of course none of this would be possible if my Mom wasn’t there to help along the way. Tyler is always telling me that I won’t be successful without hard work, and I think that this has been proven correct multiple times along the course of my show career. Just by seeing the way he works everyday, and the success he gets out of it, has pushed me to keep working for my goals if I want to succeed. He has impacted the way I think about the cattle industry. And has made me realize that you have to work for what you want. I will forever appreciate his dedication to the show business and to the people he works with. I love working with Tyler on the farm, on an animal, and in the show barns. I don’t think me and my Sister (Scarlet Fowler) would be as successful as we are today without having Tyler in our lives. He is always trying to give us pointers on how we can improve. Whether this is

cattle related, sport related, or school related. No matter if we are in the barn pulling a calf at one thirty in the morning, he is always giving me tips on how I can improve, or a different and easier way to do things. Tyler tries to help out as many kids as he can, even if they are in our class showing against us. I can name hundreds of people Tyler has tried to help improve on what they are doing. It may even just be as simple as going to their 4-H achievement day just to tell them that their steer looks good and what to do to fix a few things that the judge pointed out. Or even at a junior show, going up to kids who were speaking on the mic telling them how well they did, but next time try doing so and so differently. I am very lucky to be able to live with Tyler and learn from him everyday. Over the years Tyler has taught me many things that I will forever remember. Many of those are in relation to running a farm, or showing my heifer, all lessons I will put to good use. Tyler is my role model in the Ag industry and in general because of how he will never stop working for what he wants, he is always there to lend a helping hand, and for how strong he has been, mentally and physically, for us over the past years. I am very lucky that I get to have Tyler in my life, and for him to help me along the way as show career continues to grow. Anna Nesbitt, Nestleton, ON Junior 2nd Place - $75 Role models are often those people who play a large role in your life by influencing you to be the best you can be. The greatest influence in my life is someone who encourages me and others, does not discount anyone for how they may appear and sets a strong example on how to be a positive influence on others. By being a strong presence in our family, an excellent advocate for agriculture, a
leader in her workplace, having an incredible drive to do things, always doing well, succeeding, and most importantly, being my Mom; my mentor is the one person that I look up to the most. My role model, my Mom, is one of the best role models I can possibly think of for myself and many others. She is amazing to not let a first impression be the only impression that you will have a chance at. She will encourage you no matter how many mistakes you may make along the way. Whether it be a lost hockey game, or if you made something that tasted horrible. It could even be that you let all of the cows out when trying to bring them in (true story). Not only will she comfort you when you are sad, but she will encourage you to do better and learn from your mistakes so you may grow going forward. Additionally, when you do make mistakes she will give you multiple chances to change, improve and make it right. My Mom is never someone to take away from someone based on appearance. She is very accepting and is always willing to treat someone how she would like to be treated - The Golden Rule! My Mom plays a pivotal role in my life and sets a strong example for being a positive influence. She not only influences my sister and myself to be better people, but she also acts as a strong influence for her coworkers and friends. With all this in mind, I believe that my Mom deserves some major recognition. A role model, like my mom, is someone who is a part of your life and influences people to be like them due to their amazing qualities. My mom (Allie) is very involved in my life as well as many others. She is an excellent advocate for agriculture by educating others on the positive influence farming has. Additionally, she is a leader in her work place as the Manager of Underwriting and Portfolio at Farm Credit Canada. In this role, she works with people in the agriculture and food sector to help them grow and

be successful. In addition to her career, she is also a farmer. In her role as farmer, she has judged the Royal Winter Fair and The Lindsay Exhibition. Furthermore, she has started and grown her own purebred Angus herd in addition to exhibiting cattle all across North America. Agriculture is a major part of my mom and family’s life and she wants to ensure that it is a positive part of mine as well. My mom knows how to focus and accomplish great things. When I have multiple things on my mind I find it hard to stay on task and be able to get things done, but not my mom. She is a very ambitious person and when she sets her mind to something she gets it done! At times it might seem like her expectations or what she plans on accomplishing in a day is too daunting, she always follows through and succeeds! It does not matter if she has an email to send in a little amount of time, or a lot to do in a day, somehow she pulls it off. Wanting to get something done shows me how to push through in tough situations and be successful. There are two ways to approach being very ambitious and wanting to get something done - you can either get it done for the sake of checking it off the list or you can put lots of time and effort into it and achieve a positive outcome. Personally, I don’t think my mom has ever just done something to get it over with. Everything she does is well thought out and she takes her time and succeeds. My role model is very good at thinking things through. She will proofread many times and diligently go back over if she doesn’t like something. She ensures that everything is done to the best of her ability so that she is not left thinking that she could have done something better. I believe that being ambitious and having high expectations can benefit you when it comes to taking that extra time to proofread, add an extra sentence or ask someone else to proofread. There is no possible way that I could ever repay my mom for everything that she does, nor could
I articulate and use the right words to explain how amazing she is. My mom is helpful, comforting, loving, compassionate, kind, protective, strong, caring and so many more superlatives. My words above are
simply a snapshot of everything she does for me. In addition to all that, to me, she is the best person that I could have chosen to be my role model. It is all of these points and so many other things that I hope to live up
to one day in both my personal and professional lives. My mom is not only a positive influence in my life but for so many other people as well. This is my role model; my mentor my mom.

If you are raising bulls to market, having a Scratching Brush in the pen is invaluable. There are single brush ones or the double brush ones as illustrated. They keep the hair on the bulls better as they rub on this and not on the fences, or other sharp places that remove large patches of hair. They are also advantageous if you are torching when clipping. They clean the discoloured hair off in a couple of days, instead of the week it can sometimes take. If you are under a deadline to picture or video, this can be helpful.
