Pleasant Dawn Charolais
Welcome Friends to our 12th Annual Bull Sale!
W
e count it a blessing and a real privilege to have so many valued customers. Your support and comments are appreciated. Finally we all have a much needed turn around in prices for our calves! We calve about 200 cows and they are divided into six groups, some over 20 miles away and they are on sandy and marshy pastures. We were quite late in weaning the calves off some of the pastures, consequently, the creep fed and early weaned calves had a 100-150 lb. heavier 205 day and yearling weight. Good feet and excellent udders and calving ease are a must in our herd, followed up with correctness and performance. Our buyers tell us that our bulls consistently leave lower birth weights than their sires. The bulls have been vaccinated with 7-way, Pfizer Gold and twice with Ivermectin. We had Reserve Junior Bull Calf Champion at Brandon Livestock Expo. At Agribition two bulls placed second in each of their splits and one was first and went on to be Reserve Champion Futurity Bull. If you can’t make it to the sale, give us a ring and let us know what you are looking for. We will do our best to make sure you are satisfied with a bull. Our selection goals are geared to getting you the best bull possible for your program. We look forward to working with you on March 15. Sincerely, Pleasant Dawn Charolais • Tully & Arlene 204-855-2402, Cell 204-748-7595 • Trent & Ashley 204-855-3078, Cell 204-721-3078

elcome to the 12th Annual sale and as you can see, this family has been producing seed stock for three generations. The quality of bulls in this year’s sale is again excellent with attention being paid to feet, legs, calving ease, meat, hair, performance…all the traits that are economically important to the livestock industry. As a bonus, the whole sale offering is polled and very docile. From red factor to white, from very easy calving to big performance there is a bull here that will suit the most discriminating breeder. If Candace or I can be of any assistance before or on sale day in helping you make your selections, please give us a call.
Sincerely, Helge & Candace By • By Livestock • 306-584-7937 • Helge By 306-536-4261 • Candace By 306-536-3374
Tribute to the Past Lloyd Montgomery Hatch (1914 - 1989)
L
loyd Hatch was born and raised on a farm south of Oak Lake, Manitoba. In 1940, he bought the original Hatch half section and later expanded it to 2-1/4 sections to accommodate his mixed farming operation. He named it “Pleasant Dawn Farms.” There he and his wife Wilma Elizabeth (Tully) lived and raised their family of four: David, Tully, Mary and Fred. Hatch was an avid stockman. He was interested in all breeds of stock, but purebred Suffolk Sheep and polled Shorthorn cattle made him well known in the Canadian livestock industry. In 1940, Hatch acquired a herd of Suffolk sheep and two years later he purchased four purebred polled Shorthorn heifers. This marked the beginning of a very successful blend of sheep and cattle on the same farm. In the 50s and 60s, Hatch showed his Suffolk and North Country Cheviot sheep on the fair circuit and they frequently won the competitions. In 1956 at the Toronto Royal, he was dubbed “Manitoba Ace Sheepman”. That title proved to be quite appropriate, for this man knew animals and excelled in the ring as a competitor and as a judge. Another expression that played a significant role in identifying Hatch’s high standard of excellence was the slogan for his farm, “Quality in Quantity”. He demanded that his animals perform up to these standards. His herd became highly prized. One bull, Pleasant Farm Mark shown on the Western Canada circuit and at the Toronto Royal was retired undefeated. Hatch won the Premier Breed Award in 1971 at the Canadian Western Agribition in Regina. He received the prestigious award, Builders of the Breed from the Shorthorn World organization. He was even well known beyond Canada’s border for he judged at the Palermo Shorthorn Show in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1978. Hatch served as a member and officer of schools, churches, conservation and exhibition boards, agricultural societies as well as sheep and cattle associations. He was a conservationist of the highest calibre, being a Ducks Unlimited “keyman” for many years. In 1989 Lloyd was awarded the great honour of being inducted into the “Manitoba Agricultural Hall of Fame”. His priorities and pleasures have always centred around his family, friends and the livestock industry. He was highly respected because people knew him to be a person of laudable characteristics: integrity, courtesy and good manners.

We are a mixed grain and cow/calf operation here at Vanbeselaere Farms. We have 5 Pleasant Dawn bulls working for us. We have run a closed beef herd for over 35 years. Keeping our own replacement heifers is an important part of building a strong foundation in the herd. The Tully Hatch family and their bulls are doing just that for us, as well as giving us the pounds to sell in the fall off our last February, March calving cows. The calving ease, growth, depth, width and the disposition of these herdsires is really showing. We have a little ways to go to the vision of what I want our herd to look like. The Pleasant Dawn genetics are sure making this attainable. ~ Keith, Lisa, family and Andrew Vanbeselaere, Medora, Manitoba
Our pasture consists of native grass with rough terrain, including sloughs, rock ridges and lots of bush. Pleasant Dawn bulls have worked extremely well in our pastures, having to cover a lot of acres in a day with our 300 head cow herd. The calves have consistency with calving ease which is a must for our farm. We will definitely continue to buy bulls from the Hatch family. ~Marc & Allison Van De Kerckhove Toutes-Aides, Manitoba

We run a 120 head commercial cow/calf herd. Since 1990 we have purchased our bulls exclusively from the Hatch family. Their extensive breeding program allows us to choose the bulls we need year after year. Disposition, calving ease, weight gain and customer satisfaction! All good reasons for our repeat purchases. ~ Hainsworth Farms Deloraine, Manitoba
We have purchased numerous Pleasant Dawn bulls and females over the years. The bulls consistently have good feet and are easy to work with. They calve with ease and have calves with a good hair coat, disposition and they perform well on feed. Customer satisfaction with results keep us coming back. The Hatches are a legend in the Charolais breed. ~ Harmon’s 101 Ranch, Glen & Sheila Harmon, Kevin & Jennifer Harmon and family

This is a calving ease, heifer bull with lots of milk in his pedigree.
From a past customer… There has been a lot of ups and downs in the cattle industry, but one thing that remains “solid” is the bulls the Hatch family has to offer. Quiet, good hair coats and calving ease are all attributes that keep us coming back to buy Pleasant Dawn Bulls. We have been buying bulls from Tully and Trent for about 7 years and have never had need to get any of their bulls feet trimmed, which in my opinion means they have a feed program that really works. Also peace of mind on sale day, that they back their bulls like very few in the industry. ~ Wes and Wayne Lamport Melita, MB

From a past customer… Kathy and I raise beef for the consumer to enjoy, not cattle for show. We have always rail graded our finished cattle and rely heavy on EPDs. The Hatch family’s genetics have been a sound part of our crossbreeding program and has shown positive in our feedlot results. We have been through a few ups and downs in the cattle cycle and found that a solid crossbreeding program that gives us live calves that convert grass to beef and have the gut capacity to perform well in the feedlot will save us money at the end of the day. Until the consumer says they don’t like beef, I expect the Hatch’s bulls to be part of our herd. If we could sum up our opinion of the Hatch family, it comes down to one word, Trust. ~ Barry & Kathy Routledge Farms Lenore, Manitoba

He is in the top 10% of the breed for calving ease, birth weight and performance, a rare combination. We have used him very successfully on heifers and cows. He is very correct and moderate framed and adds thickness, quarter, testicles and good feet to his progeny. He has a fantastic group of calves. His females have excellent udders and small teats.
