welcome

welcome from By livestock

Welcome to the 2nd Annual Simple as Black & White Bull Sale, and as the name of the sale implies, it is as simple as black and white to be profitable in the cattle industry. With the maternal and carcass characteristics bred into an Angus cow base, and the hybrid vigour and performance of the Charolais, it makes a great combination that is in strong demand in the marketplace. The silver calves do combine the best of both breeds and are profitable for the cow/ calf producer, the feeders and the packers.

These four young families are doing a great job at breeding and developing a product that will work at any level of the industry. There are some bulls of definite herd bull quality from each of the consignors, with some solid time proven pedigrees. When I pictured the bulls, they were good dispositioned, sound made and in nice, not over fed condition. Whether you are looking for yearlings or twoyear olds, you will not be disappointed in the quality of any of them. These consignors welcome you to their farms anytime, to view the bulls and their operations. We look forward to seeing you on sale day. If Jon, Candace, or I can be of any assistance before the sale, or on sale day, please don’t hesitate to give us a call. We would be happy to find you bulls that are right for your program. Sincerely,

welcome to the Simple as black and white sale

It is our pleasure to welcome you to the 2nd Annual Simple as Black and White Bull Sale. The dream of hosting a reputable bull sale has come true and our reputation is growing daily. As the year disappeared and things changed around us, one thing remains; the agribusiness is as strong as ever. It is unfortunate the circumstances must be what they are for the world to realize the essential element held within agriculture. Like the rest of the agriculture world, our operations have not lost focus and are continuing our passion and hard work to bring the best to the table. The introduction of new sire groups supplies a bit more variety when selecting for your bull battery. We feel the offering this year is most impressive! Be it you are looking for a terminal cross, athletic bulls to cover miles, a calving ease bull to breed your heifers or some maternal additions to boost your replacement pen, we are confident there is a bull in this offering for you. We welcome our guest consigners once again from Snake Valley Farms Charolais and Cash Cattle Co., and thank them for bringing their absolute best to town. We are excited to work with you and welcome any questions you may have. Our sale will broadcast online with DLMS, as well having a great team of professionals to assist your needs. Calling all producers to view for yourself this tremendous line up of industry leading genetics from the Simple as Black and White Bull sale!

Sincerely,

Jamie and Kody

What an opportunity it is to welcome you to the second annual ‘Simple as Black and White Bull Sale’! We still hold the overwhelming feeling of support from last year’s sale. From the sale help, partners, sale management, family, friends, bidders, and buyers- it took all of you to make the dream come true. Thank You! Twenty-twenty, what a year you have been! This year knows it will not be winning any popularity contests. However, at the K Lazy T, it has been marked as another fantastic year. In addition to the first bull sale success, the fruits of the year were found in many areas including a successful crop year, exciting calving season with new sire groups, strong sales of our first females on offer and memories built with family and friends. Also newer to the scene of our program is working with my better half Rachel. Rachel brings a progressive attitude and herd health expertise to the table; she has been instrumental towards our success. If you need a pretty face to talk cows with, she is your gal! The offering this year is truly tremendous. The bulls are athletic, thick, hairy, and correct. All the bulls have been developed responsibly by rations monitored by nutrition experts. We do not have a show pen, just a bull pen and you will see that in the consistency of this group. On a moderate grain intake, the bulls are pail fed to keep them manageable and it shows when it comes to walking the pens or working with our bulls down the road. The 2-year-old bulls in the sale are of exceedingly high quality. The demand for aged bulls has been noted and these guys will cover your requirements from performance cow bulls to heifer breeding quality bulls. We now have our breeding split into two groups so these aged bulls will be more available to our clients in the future. Herd health is important to us and we keep vaccinations current on the cows and these bulls have been vaccinated with BoviShield Gold one shot, Ultrabac 7 and Ivomec. They look healthy because they are healthy! Buy with confidence knowing we stand behind our cattle. Faith in our brand came from constantly judging our breed and herd, seeking the absolute best and not being afraid to cull. Our selections are based on superior structural qualities for longevity, easy doing characteristics for lower inputs, eye appeal for marketability, maternal strengths for maximum calf achievement and performance with calving ease never left behind. We know there is a bull for everyone’s taste and budget in our offering no matter your desire. Feel free to call to discuss the bulls and talk about the momma cows. Our gate is always open to visitors as well if you wish to see the genetics behind these guys, we encourage you to take the time to tour the herd. Once again it is a pleasure to work with our good friends and partners in the sale, Jamie and Amy, as well as the consigners of Snake Valley Farms Charolais and Cash Cattle Company. These folks’ ambition in the industry shines bright and it’s written all over the quality of their livestock. See you sale day, and I look forward to a visit prior too! “Our Vision is Your Opportunity to Grow Your Herd and Profitability” Kody Traxel K Lazy T Cattle Co. Herd bull alert! An absolutely stunning herd sire candidate, outcross from anything else in the offering! KAT 25H is a real muscle machine and comes by it honestly, from the diamonds in his pedigree! Justamere Sudden Look 117D was the high selling bull in 2017, for $104,000.00, at Justamere. On the bottom side of 25H, you will find the Rosebud cow, an Upward daughter that has been busy in the flush program building powerful progeny! Tammy Brown won the bid on our only other Sudden Look bull ever sold and he has developed into a pen favorite at their ranch! If maternal power had a limit this mating would push it! What an opportunity to build some calves from one of the greatest Angus herd sires in the industry and one of our most impacting cows, Keepsake! Unfortunately, this will be the last opportunity to get ahold of the Right Time X Keepsake 10W genetics! These were the last two eggs we had in the tank and Rob did a great job making them stick! These flush mates find themselves at the top of our bullpen with great carcass qualities, attractive shape and strong muscle expression. K Lazy T Keepsake 17’19 is a full sibling to these bulls and was recently our highest selling female to the Bircham Ranch! Last year we featured two flush mates selling to Myles Gray and Seven Persons Grazing, Tyler commented that the bull was one of the best bulls walking the grazing grounds! In addition to the flush mate’s appearance we also have a Right Time X Keepsake cow working in-herd and her first calf was a top selling heifer bull to Dustin Vossler last year. These Keepsake genetics work in the pasture and can make your ‘Show Ring’ attractive to the calf buyers! You cannot go wrong with these proven and powerful genetics! Opportunity awaits!

We have a showoff here! This guy is a wide load with a super profile. Not surprising to see this great build coming from a proven cow family going back to SAV Density and Belvin Yardage. His grand sire, K Lazy T Yardage 110’13, was a favorite selling to Ken Rutledge of Hardisty, AB, where he was used in his purebred program. We have been breeding towards top females like 40H’s mom for years. Take advantage of our hard work with this bull and check out the job K lazy t Yardage 110’13 his sister did on KAT 54H!

Alongside with his two year old dam, Wiwa Creek Pride 63’10, they won the “First Lady Classic”. She also became a high seller for $43,000 after Rush Lake sold. Sourcing this opportunity has given us genetics that work. The Rush Lake offspring are hardy, uniform and very marketable. We would like to welcome you to the 2nd Annual SIMPLE AS BLACK AND WHITE BULL SALE. First and foremost we’d like to thank everyone that has made the chance of doing this sale again possible. Without the interest of perspective buyers and cattlemen alike, it would be hard to keep the flame of this passion, we call a job, alive. Not only in the bulls that are coming to town but the genetics and operation as a whole. Thank you! Being able to partner with the great operation of K Lazy T, alongside our guest consigners Snake Valley Farm Charolais and Cash Cattle Co., is a real treat. Everyone with the same mind set and drive to provide a quality product makes it a real pleasure. This year’s offering is honestly the best we have ever had to offer. Our exciting up and coming herdsire, KENTUCKY RAIN, has really complimented our female base. Along with some superior genetics used while AI-ing and our tried, tested and true matings, we really feel the quality is deep. The numbers put forward to you are as accurate as they can be. The posted BW for the bulls are what the scale had read at the time of weighing. The majority of the calves were weighed within the first 24 hours after the first suck. I make a point of saying this because this 2021 calving season we have changed the way we weigh our calves. Because of equipment upgrade, we are weighing them ASAP, before they have the initial colostrum intake. In some instances, out of curiosity, I have found them to be 10 pounds heavier 24 hours later. I am not making excuses or preaching the whole birth weight issue, just informing you of what I know for you to make an educated decision when purchasing your bull battery. The weaning weights are actual weights straight off the momma and a small haul home on the 16th of September. Last but not least they were weighed the 25th of January and weights submitted to be adjusted by the CCA’s program. I feel the adjusted yearling weight can be used as a better tool to gauge how big these bulls are going to develop. We would like to encourage everyone to feel free to come take a look at the bulls at the yard anytime prior to the sale. In an uncertain world, a little bit of homework may go a long ways. They will also be available for viewing at MHFC before the sale. If we can be of any assistance in selecting your next herdsire and getting it bought, please feel free to contact us or any of the sale staff. No one knows our cattle and can be more critical than us. We will be sure to find something that will work for you in a professional manner. Please join us on March 15, 2021 at the Medicine Hat Feeding Company for the 2nd Annual Simple As Black and White Bull Sale!

HERDSIRE ALERT! This bull has it all. Very attractive, complete made, free moving with great foot structure all wrapped up in a wooly, docile package. He has balanced EPD numbers and a pedigree that spells champion. Kentucky Rain has really bred well and his progeny have been very well accepted all around, and no one can argue with the female phenotype that Kingston has been trending. We really feel this bull will be able to compliment just about any herd. He is HANDS DOWN one of the best bulls we have raised to date.

Crowned Grand Champion as a member of the Pen of 3 bulls and Reserve Grand Champion Individual bull at the ACA Select event in December. This bull has herdsire written all over him! His presence had everyone in the barn drawn to him. His dam just sold to Cay’s Cattle Company as the high selling bred cow for $13,500. With a little regret in letting her go, we look forward to seeing the success she brings for them. She is everything that we strive for in a cow and has passed on her attributes to all her progeny. The cross to our exciting new herdsire, Kentucky Rain, really exceeded our expectations. These bulls hit a home run! Lots of style, oodles of hair, great rib shape, and tons of volume. Hank has the ability to go on to make a difference and better the great Charolais herd.

Another member of the ACA Grand Champion Pen of Three. These flush mates are all very similar in type, yet have many subtle differences. Throughout the summer and the little bit these boys were on the road, we’ve had many discussions as to which is the better of the 3, and seemed to come up with a different answer each time. I feel Haggard is a nice mix of his dam and sire. Kentucky Rain has done a really nice job of moderating some of our bigger cows without sacrificing substance and performance. I think 17H is the deepest bodied of the three. It would be best if you were to come take a look and be your own judge.

Being a participant in the ACA’s Players Club judging panel was really worth its weight in gold. As a result, the Apex breeding we used really worked well. Heartbreaker is a perfect example. The added hair and performance on the top side paired with the finer make-up of his dam really seemed to hit a home run. Born early with ease yet able to register a weaning weight over 900 lbs is something to be excited about.

A real nice way to round off the “outlaws” of the ACA’s Grand Champion Pen of Bulls. Hayes was the last bull born of the flush at 285 days gestation from breeding. He is probably the most “extreme” of the three. A bit more shape and barrel to him, along with a heavier set to his structure. Yet, he is still so similar with the hair, shape, and style, that it’s hard to pick a favourite. These bulls are peas in a pod. Taking after their sire, they were very early maturing, correct and free moving. Like I said before, please come take a look and decide for yourself.

If we had a set of heavily influenced Angus based cows, this bull would be “the pick”. Dipping into the older end of the herd book, Mr Perfect passes along his many attributes. Highest Regard is a bull that will provide a bit more frame, performance, and hybrid vigour, without sacrificing calf-ability. Born long as a rope with the added grow, this bull will sire a set of calves that the feedlots long to purchase and feed. On behalf of the Vaage family, welcome to the 2nd Annual Simple as Black & White Bull Sale. There were times over the past year we probably all wondered if we were going to make it back here in any sort of familiar normalcy. A true testament to the resilience and perseverance of all who have chosen to be a part of this wonderful cattle/ agriculture industry. We have continued to strive to keep all our operations profitable and growing forward and that all starts by getting our cows bred. At Snake Valley Farm we have been striving to raise animals that will do the job, start to finish. Raising bulls with good feet and leg structure is at the forefront in our list of requirements, giving them the ability to go out and travel all necessary miles and terrain to get cows covered each breeding season, for multiple seasons. Leaving calves that have the genetic potential to grow and excel on the cow and then later on into the feedlot. The bulls we have on offer have been fed out with a healthy balanced ration for growth and longevity. We trust that these bulls will work hard for your program as they have for us.

Bought as a bull calf and has been walking the pastures to date without an ounce of trouble. Used successfully on all types of heifers, angus influenced included, he has been a very versatile type bull. Without sacrificing performance, his calves are born easy with lots of grow. Passing on his many attributes, his progeny are very clean fronted, early maturing, develop a nice small head and have great disposition, not to mention tremendous spring of rib. Whether you are looking for performance, calving-ability or strong maternal traits, you can’t go wrong. Polled

When on the search for a new herdsire, Kentucky Rain caught our eye. He was the 2018 Jr. Bull Calf Champion of the National Charolais show at Farmfair. Also, a finalist in the ever talked about ACA Players Club panel judged event. The pairing in his pedigree sure did work. The moderation on the top side along with some old time power and maternal on the bottom resulted in a flawless design. He is very fluid in his movement, correct and has great foot structure. His progeny have the same great look and lines. With neck extension right out of the top of his shoulders, he has been used successfully on some select heifers. He has been a sound investment here at Flat Valley Cattle, you can be sure his progeny will do the same for you.

Crowned champion of the $50 000 ACA Players Club in 2018 at Farmfair. When I first saw Apex in the fall with his pen mates, he was a standout. Fast forward to Farmfair and he was the talk of the barns, in all breeds. He was a very complete bull with lots of volume, clean fronted, great hair and very correct. With a pedigree to back his calving-ability, it’s no wonder he works so well on heifers. His progeny are born easy, have the same great hair coat, and correctness, and grow into very usable bulls.
