E M O C L E W From this autumn our professional performance programming rhythm moves from weekly to fortnightly and our autumn and spring seasons are now extended to enable this. We are also beginning to experiment with presenting some companies for two nights rather than just one. This is better for the artists, gives audiences a choice of nights and enables word of mouth promotion to encourage more people locally to see great dance performances.
Pavilion Dance South West is committed to supporting dance makers from across the nation to test new ideas and to developing dance opportunities for emerging South West choreographers. To this end we are delighted that our season includes another edition of Hatch and Scratch (Page 9), for audiences to feed ideas into work in development, and a new annual feature, PDSW Introduces (Page 13), featuring three promising artists from our region.
So this autumn both Avant Garde Dance Company’s Fagin’s Twist (page 10), commissioned by PDSW, and James Wilton Dance’s Leviathan (Page 11) will be presented for two nights each at Pavilion Dance.
Each month of the season we also present a professional dance work especially for families with young children (Pages 16 to 19) and we are also proud to be presenting The Bolshoi Ballet regularly on our big screen (Pages 22 to 23).
No excuse now to miss seeing the work of two of the most exciting and explosive contemporary choreographers creating dance in Britain today!
So much to see but also masses to do, too.
Also featuring in our autumn season are regular crowd pleasers 2Faced Dance (Page 14), the award-winning Rosie Kay Dance Company (Page 12) and the brilliantly immersive Our Mighty Groove by Uchenna Dance (Page 15).
With 45 regular weekly classes (Page 27) and special opportunities for young people (Pages 26 and 30) and older dancers (Pages 28 to 29) alike this autumn is packed with moving treats for everybody! Don’t miss a thing! The PDSW team

Dance can change lives. You can help secure its future.
A WORD FROM THE DEVELOPMENT TEAM As an organisation we are committed to empower and to change people’s lives by involving them in dance. We know through our work with young people, older dancers and especially those with more difficult health issues, such as Parkinson’s, that dance can be life-affirming. However, to be able to continue this work we do need a little help from you. We are very fortunate to receive support from Arts Council England and from Bournemouth Borough Council to help run our core activities.
But, like all public investment, this has reduced in recent years. So, this autumn we have put together some opportunities for you, our supporters, to challenge yourself, to push yourself just that little bit further, and in the process help us to do what we do best – provide dance opportunities that have the potential to change people’s lives: PDSW Halloween Firewalk Fire-walking has been described as an “...inner healing mind-over-matter movement where walkers claim to find spirituality and empowerment”. This struck a chord with us, so we decided to host a big party on 29 October where you can take part, challenge yourself and raise money for our work with children and young people. Or you can just dress up and come along with all the family to support us! To find out more and to sign up, please email joanne@pdsw.org.uk or visit www.pdsw.org.uk/Firewalk.

ARTIST DEVELOPMENT AT PDSW As a National Dance Development Organisation, Pavilion Dance South West provides support to dance artists and choreographers at all stages of their careers. We commission new work, create opportunities to showcase work, and support dance touring across the South West and nationally. We have recently developed our Artist Support programme to be more responsive to both artists and audiences. PDSW Discovery, Playtime and Dream Artists receive a bespoke programme of support from our team, which can include space to rehearse, financial investment, and advice on business models and markets for their work. We are proud to have supported such artists as Mark Bruce, Tim Casson and Neon Dance to
have produced work that has had a national impact. This season you will see Fagin’s Twist by Dream Artists Avant Garde Dance Company, which has been co-commissioned by PDSW (see p. 10). Playtime Artist Sally Marie | Sweetshop Revolution will be part of Inside Out Dorset festival with her production Tree. For further information on our artist development programme, visit our website. Do you want to be more involved with this exciting artist development programme? Then become a donor and join our Discover! Play! Dream! network. THREE CHOREOGRAPHIES BY MISCHIEF COMPANY, JAMES FINNEMORE AND FELICITY KERR SUITABLE FOR AGES 16+ (CONTAINS NUDITY)
A rare opportunity to view and discuss work in progress by three established and emerging choreographers
EXPECT
Pioneered by Battersea Arts Centre, “scratching” is presenting new performance in development to an audience to receive feedback. We’ve invited three of the dance companies we are supporting to present their work in progress:
Mischief Company's new work RED is a twisted adaptation of Little Red Riding Hood, taking a raw look into the mysterious life of RED and her relationship with WOLF, as told through the character of the DEVIL. Storytelling at its darkest and most intriguing – not for the faint-hearted! RED is commissioned by Pavilion Dance South West, with funding from Arts Council England, in partnership with and supported by University of Cumbria and Jasmin Vardimon Company.
James Finnemore’s Bloom (extract) is loosely based on the Southern Reach trilogy, Jeff VanderMeer's “mycological masterpiece”. It explores human beings' fear of the unknown and examines how two individuals communicate with each other amid a constantly changing physical landscape. James Finnemore is an associate artist at The Point.
Felicity Kerr’s abstract work explores J.S. Bach's Fugue in C minor from The Well-Tempered Clavichord through dance and discovers how musical harmony can be translated into movement harmony. Featuring both music and dance created by herself, Felicity invites you to witness and explore the music and the dual language that emerges. ARTIST DEVELOPMENT AT PDSW

A retelling of Melville’s Moby Dick to keep you on the edge of your seat featuring athletic dance, martial arts and capoeira
Leviathan is Man versus Nature; be careful what you fish for...
Leviathan follows Ahab, a ship captain hell-bent on capturing the white whale: Moby Dick, a beast as vast and dangerous as the sea itself, yet serene and beautiful beyond all imagining. Ahab’s crew is drawn into the unhinged charisma of their captain, blindly following him on his perilous adventure towards almost certain destruction. Multi award-winning choreographer James Wilton re-imagines Herman Melville’s groundbreaking novel, Moby Dick. Featuring a cast of seven and Wilton’s trademark blend of athletic dance, martial arts, capoeira and partner-work, Leviathan will leave you gasping for air under the sheer ferocity of movement, all accompanied by a powerful electro-rock soundtrack by Lunatic Soul.

PERFORMANCE
In our “Joie de Vivre” programme we celebrate and showcase companies of mature dancers. We are delighted to be hosting companies such as YAMA Dance from the South West and guests Company of Elders (Sadler's Wells), PRIME (Scotland) and solo artist Patricia Glynn (Ireland).
FRAGMENTS, NOT FORGOTTEN (COMPANY OF ELDERS)
CARRY ON DANCING (PRIME) Choreography: Steinvor Palsson
Choreography: Seeta Patel
A brief glimpse into new and old memories, scattered, lost, found, but never totally forgotten. Choreographer Seeta Patel has used the words of the elders to create a delicate work of haunting moments and fleeting images. The internationally renowned Company of Elders is Sadler’s Wells’ resident over-60s performance company, proving since 1989 that it's never too late to start dancing! Choreography: Patricia Glynn
Galway dance artist Patricia Glynn explores some aspects of family bonds and loss.
Beautifully lit and costumed by Jeanine Byrne, the piece evokes a bygone era of glamour, mystery, seduction and dark humour. The choreographer Steinvor Palsson was raised on the songs of Ms Dietrich, her late father's favourite artist. Carry On Dancing is a personal tribute to him and to the courageous, powerful and completely remarkable women who are PRIME.

HEARTSTEPS... PATHWAYS OF MEMORY
Carry On Dancing is set to the original recordings of memorable songs from the 20s and 30s sung by the legendary Marlene Dietrich. Poignant, funny and eclectic, these classic songs are interpreted through movement, dance and occasional text by an extraordinary ensemble of nine women in their sixties and beyond.
