A WELCOME FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE This is a bumper edition PDSW programme taking you from June to December 2019. We’ve curated it to bring you an amazing variety of dance styles and themes, of shows to watch and chances to dance yourself, whatever your age, income or background. We’re even piloting our first ‘pay what you want’ event. The BBC’s Director of Arts Jonty Claypole was recently quoted as saying “[Dance] feels like the future. Often you go to dance events, and you feel like this is where we need to be going as a nation.” We couldn’t agree more. We hope that you mark the events that interest you on your calendar, and we look forward to seeing you several times over the next few months! Zannah Doan, Chief Executive

THE UPSIDE DOWN MAN (THE SON OF THE ROAD) By Mohamed Toukabri

Wed 26 Jun, 7.30pm

EXPECT

£5 (details p.26)

A deeply personal solo work, an exploration of the migrant experience

“I am not one story, I am many stories.” Mohamed Toukabri’s autobiographical solo delves deeply into the experience of a young man finding himself in dance and in Europe. From discovering street dance as a 12-year old in front of the railway station in Tunis to his 10 years of performing with renowned companies like Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, and Jan Lauwers, his movements and reflections resonate with sharp insight to explore a personal yet universal migrant experience. Subtle video projections from his family home, stories of casual racism and subtly humoured observations blend into a richly textured experience of being in-between two countries, two cultures, two traditions. With thoughtful reflection as well a candid irony, he takes us to what he calls ‘the splendour of this mysterious zone’. The Upside Down Man is part of Shubbak, London’s biennial festival of contemporary Arab culture. Running time: Approx 60 mins. Age guidance: 15+. Photo by Emilie Jacomet

A stunning blend of dance and acrobatics with live music

EXPECT

ANIMA

£14/£12/£8 (details p.26) Using their unique blend of dance and acrobatics, Joli Vyann’s new show explores the simple act of breathing in all its forms and how it connects us all. Anima is Latin for breath, life and soul. How does breath affect our emotions? Our physicality? Our very being? The performers push themselves to the limits of their physicality where breath is shared, breath is stolen and breath is forced. Anima is about the delicate connection between two people breathing through an emotional roller coaster. Anima features a live musician, using dance, circus, voice and wind instruments, allowing breath to literally become the soundscape for the performance. Join us after the Thursday show for a post-show chat. Running time: 60 mins, no interval. Age guidance: 8+.

Virgin Territory contains content that some people may find upsetting. Pay-what-you-can (details p.26)

Charlotte Vincent’s VIRGIN TERRITORY takes an uncompromising look at our hyper-sexualised digital culture and its impact on girls and young women growing up today, ever more relevant since the emerging and continuing #MeToo movement. We all want to be ‘liked’ and ‘followed’, but what effect does constantly performing for the camera have on our sense of self-worth? VIRGIN TERRITORY is a multi-layered film installation, performed by four children aged 12-14 and four adults, with real-life testimonies, stunning cinematography and bold performances screened across five large televisions mounted on school benches. With moving, resilient performances at its core, VIRGIN TERRITORY asks vital questions about responsibility as we witness children playing in an adult online world. Running time: 75 mins. Age guidance: 12+ for screenings before 6pm, 14+ for screenings at 6pm and 7:30pm. Photo by Bosie Vincent

WHAT’S YOUR SUPERPOWER? Tue 10 Dec – Thu 12 Dec, 7.30pm £10, £8 They say life is not the destination but the journey, but in a world where females feel they are increasingly expected to be practically perfect in every way how can anyone know how to truly make the most of the moment and not worry about where it will lead? Maybe it’s time to tap into your superpowers to be seen and heard, and to explore both what sets you apart as an individual but also what connects you and allows you to belong. Performed by second year BA (Hons) Dance students from Arts University Bournemouth and directed by Course Leader, Jane White, this piece of narrative dance theatre is created in response to a number of original pieces of flash fiction and prose poetry written by Dr James Cole, Course Leader for BA (Hons) Creative Writing.
