SPRING 2019
ONLINE WWW.PDSW.ORG.UK
A WELCOME FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE Dance is springing into our lives again in this new season. Our performance programme features virtuosity of contemporary ballet, the thrill of martial arts fused with contemporary dance, acrobatics, and handto-hand circus skills – with a sprinkling of spoken word and poetry. The emerging themes are considerations of gender identity and mental wellbeing. For those of you who like to do the actual dancing, our classes and company programmes offer you the chance to dance away the winter blues. Our work spills into the South West of England, with our ‘Breathe’ health and wellbeing event in Taunton and the regional young people’s dance platform in Dartington. With all these events and the upcoming UK Dance Showcase in May 2019, we need more volunteers than ever before. If you’re looking for a new year opportunity to get out and about, experience new things and meet people – we’d love to hear from you. We look forward to opening our doors to you again this new year. Zannah Doan, Chief Executive

THE SQUARE (2017) Thu 7 Feb, 7.30pm £8/£6 (details p.26) Force Majeure director Ruben Östlund returns with The Square, a knife-sharp satire on art, culture and communication in the digital age. With pitch-perfect performances, inventive set pieces and a cutting deadpan wit, The Square is a hilarious, unique and often surreal look at idealism, hypocrisy and cynicism in the modern world. Director: Ruben Östlund. Running time: 151 mins.

THE BALLET OF THE NATIONS (2018) Thu 21 Feb, 7.30pm £5 (details p.26) This 50-minute film, narrated by Billy Zane, was inspired by the 1915 pacifist satire, The Ballet of the Nations, written by Vernon Lee and illustrated by Maxwell Armfield as a response to World War One. Impermanence’s film incorporates original dialogue and a narrative of intricate stylised dance pieces inspired by Lee’s text which imagines war as a diabolical dance choreographed by Satan and Death. The dance descends into a massacre, locking the nations of the world into an endless cycle of slaughter and mutilation. Director: Roseanna Anderson & Joshua Bentovim. Running time: 50 mins.

Director: Steve Loveridge. Running time: 96 mins.
I AM NOT A WITCH (2018) Thu 28 Mar, 7.30pm £8/£6 (details p.26) When eight-year-old Shula turns up alone and unannounced in a rural Zambian village, the locals are suspicious. A minor incident escalates to a full-blown witch trial, where she is found guilty and sentenced to life on a state-run witch camp. As the days pass, Shula begins to settle into her new community, but a threat looms on the horizon. Soon she is forced to make a difficult decision – whether to resign herself to life on the camp, or take a risk for freedom. At times moving, often funny and occasionally surreal, I Am Not a Witch offers spellbinding storytelling with flashes of anarchic humour. Audacious and unforgettable, it showcases Rungano Nyoni as a fresh and fearless new voice in British film. Director: Rungano Nyoni. Running time: 93 mins.

ARTS UNIVERSITY BOURNEMOUTH DANCE DEGREE, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH PDSW
LAUNCHPAD Thu 17 Jan, 7.30pm £10, £8 Soon to embark on careers as portfolio dance artists, final year dance students from AUB present five unique ‘scratches’ in a night where audiences can see bold new ideas tested live on stage! Taking place in an open forum and including the ever popular ‘feedback speed dating’, come and be part of a vibrant and evolving creative process, where you can see tomorrow’s new work, today!
SPRINGBOARD 2019 Sun 28 Apr, 6pm £5 This annual dance platform event is led by the BA (Hons) Dance programme at Arts University Bournemouth, in partnership with The Roche Court Educational Trust, with a focus on the exploration of visual art and performance. First year degree dance students will share their original choreographic material in a live performance setting, having responded to exhibited sculpture at the New Art Centre, Roche Court. By using abstracted sculpture as a starting point for new performance, students will develop their understanding of visual language and how observations and discussion can be articulated through development work in the studio, culminating in a live performance. This platform is also open to local schools and colleges, working with the same creative live brief as first year undergraduates, allowing AUB Dance to fully support the local dance ecology and to allow our third year students the chance to curate both content and the creation of the event itself.
