A WORD FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE We’ve got an amazing upcoming programme – how can you support us? The staff here at Pavilion Dance South West (PDSW) are motivated by a passion to bring you the most engaging, humane, impressive dance to watch or take part in. Our theatre and studios are in Bournemouth and we have a strong local focus to our work. Check out the rest of this brochure to see the impressive selection of classes, events and performances that are coming up. We frequently hear stories about the positive impact our work has on individuals. It can, quite literally, be life-affirming and life-changing. We are privileged to receive feedback from some of the people whose lives it has touched:
“[My daughter] is on the Autism Spectrum and as yet hasn't learned to talk and is a little behind in her understanding and motor skills. She absolutely adores music and dance and it's so nice to see her be able to enjoy herself freely but also starting to learn to take some instruction from a teacher outside of nursery.” A Parent
The quality of work and the connection we make between dance and the public is recognised by incredibly important grants from Arts Council England and Bournemouth Borough Council – but that only covers 47% of our costs. We are a charity and we need money and volunteers to keep our work going. Would you like to help? Maybe your business would like to partner with us as a sponsor of a high quality contemporary dance show? Or maybe you’d like to give us a few hours a month to help look after the public at events? Do get in touch with us for a chat. We look forward to getting to know you. Please contact us on 01202 203630 or get in touch with our Development Team – more details on page 5. Zannah Doan, Chief Executive.

The theme this season is “Behind the Barre”, featuring documentaries about two dance icons. The first is former Royal Ballet superstar Sergei Polunin in surprise box office smash, Dancer, followed by the UK premiere of Sylvie Guillem – considered by many to be the ultimate embodiment of the art form – in Sur le fil/On the edge. Here is an unprecedented look into the life of a complex young man who has made ballet go viral. Urban rebel, iconoclast, airborne angel, Sergei is transforming the shape of ballet as we know it. But virtuosity comes with a high price. How can you be free to be yourself when you are ballet’s “hottest property”?

Making drawings and paintings while Mischief Company developed RED (see p. 8), with its strongly implied narrative, led to a series of more illustrative work. The artwork shown here includes motifs from the moment and also developed still images that communicate character and scene-setting in a more direct way.
Fran's work is based on the human condition as she is fascinated by the individual and its relationship with the landscape and society. She seeks to find connections that expose the true emotional content of a person at a moment in time.
Denise's second residency, working with the poetic and poetically-inspired production At The End We Begin by Richard Chappell Dance Company, resulted in a series of monoprints. These images were dynamically composed on the printing press bed and made in the moment, in the spirit of the original drawings.
26
The work in this exhibition is based on two residencies at Pavilion Dance, working with two choreographers and their dancers in rehearsal. The initial drawings were a response to the psychological and emotional content of the work, which were then developed into two- and threedimensional pieces. The process of making using a range of materials unravels what Fran imagines to be the essence of the performers’ stories.
