E M O C L WE A recent report, commissioned by the Scottish government last year, found that people who participate in dance and who enjoy going to the theatre generally feel healthier than those who don’t. It is great to have that confirmed so unequivocally, as helping people live a healthier and more fulfilled life through dance is our main aim. We are delighted, then, that Arts Council England has shown its trust in our work again by confirming our status as a “National Portfolio Organisation” for a further three years. This ensures that we can continue to deliver our core programme until the next application round in 2018 and that we have the capacity to try to raise the additional resources we still need to deliver the many exciting dance projects we have planned for the people of Bournemouth and the whole South West region. Perhaps you can help make these plans a reality? See pages 4 and 5 for more details of how you could do this.
WELCOME
We strongly believe that working in partnership with others helps us achieve our aims, and are therefore very excited about a range of collaborations this autumn (page 7). One of them, a project with Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (BSO), launches our regular “Thursday Night is Dance Night” season: Vesalii icones fuses hip hop dance and contemporary classical music by composer Sir Peter Maxwell Davies (page 8).
Our programme for families, children and young people offers – amongst others – two wonderful opportunities for the whole family to enjoy productions by renowned classical ballet companies: Ballet Black’s Dogs Don’t Do Ballet (page 25), and the Bolshoi Ballet’s live streaming of The Nutcracker (page 21). For the first time we are also showing films for families (page 23). Of course we also continue our art house film programme. What’s more, for the first time we are part of Purbeck Film Festival and are screening four films during the festival (page 22-23). For those interested to hear more about our work in the region we recommend the Coinvestment Day on Tuesday 14 October (page 27). Our classes will commence again on 8 September (page 31), culminating as usual in our end-of-term Cabaret (page 17). So, whether as participant or audience member or both – join us this autumn and feel happier, healthier and more fulfilled by engaging with dance.
Enjoy! The PDSW team

SUPPORT US
Our Vision:
We believe in a world where everyone leads a healthier and more fulfilled life through dance. Registered charity 1111641
Pavilion Dance South West (PDSW) is a not-for-profit organisation and a registered charity. As a dance organisation we are offering something unique and farreaching, helping as many people as possible experience dance, regardless of their background, age or abilities. Dance is a beautiful art form but it also has huge benefits for people’s physical and mental health and well-being. You can help us support more people to experience the joy of dance.
IF YOU DO
WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT NOW?
• You will be championing dance as a creative, fun way to a healthier lifestyle across the South West of England • You will be enabling young people from all backgrounds to engage in dance
• While Arts Council England and Bournemouth Borough Council continue to invest in us everyone knows there is less public money than there used to be, and the trend is likely to continue
• You will be encouraging young aspiring choreographers to make exciting new performances
• At the same time there is more need for dance provision as health budgets reduce and school curricula become narrower
YOUR SUPPORT COULD
• We are committed to keeping ticket prices affordable for everyone and providing lots of free opportunities too so that no one is excluded from accessing dance, which means that we don’t recover our costs
• Deliver dance classes to improve the quality of life for people living with Parkinson’s • Enable young people who struggle in mainstream education to find a passion and a positive release • Help increase the number of dance experiences offered to children at school • Support a professional dance performance to be seen by more people across the South West
SUPPORT US
I tell you what I’ve learned; I’ve learned that I need my friends more than I actually thought I did. If I’d have not bothered to come in, I’d have been letting my friends down. I used to think I’ll do what I want, when I want, but now …
• The South West is a region with patchy cultural provision, as it is so rural. It also has a large percentage of older people, many of whom are socially isolated, and many vulnerable young people. Our work addresses all these areas, but sustaining what we do is challenging and needs your support
Your contribution ensures that we can continue to enrich and change people’s lives through dance.

Every week between 2 October and 27 November there’s an opportunity to see entertaining, exciting, moving and sometimes even challenging shows. We invite you to tell us what you think – and maybe to challenge us back! – in our regular post-show chats with the artists. Having successfully established “Thursday Night is Dance Night” in Bournemouth we are delighted that our performance seasons are now beginning to grow – beyond Thursdays, beyond our venue, Pavilion Dance, and even beyond Bournemouth. This would not be possible without strong partnerships, and we are very fortunate that our network of creative partners is going from strength to strength. We are once again collaborating with Bournemouth Arts by the Sea Festival (26 September to 12 October) as Core Creative Partner and are especially proud to co-present/co-commission two festival highlights, outdoor extravaganza The Roof at The Waterfront (page 18) and Vesalii icones, a fusion of contemporary music and hip hop dance (page 8).

PDSW PERFORMANCE SEASON – BEYOND THURSDAYS, BEYOND PAVILION DANCE
BEYOND THURSDAYS, BEYOND PAVILION DANCE To celebrate this partnership we have added all PDSW events between 26 September and 12 October to the festival calendar. Look out for the Arts Bournemouth Festival logo throughout this brochure. For festival events presented at Pavilion Dance check the listing on pages 32 to 33. Another highlight in our array of partnerships this season is the conference Re:Generations 2014, hosted by Pavilion Dance South West and delivered by PDSW, the Association of Dance of the African Diaspora (ADAD), IRIE! dance theatre and De Montfort University (page 30). Venturing further into the region we are delighted to support the second national tour of Dracula, commissioned by us and created by PDSW Dream Artist Mark Bruce. As part of this tour, we will be co-presenting Dracula on Tuesday 18 November at the Lighthouse in Poole (page 19). Finally, we are proud to announce a brand new dance degree, delivered by and developed in collaboration with Arts University Bournemouth, which will offer students firsthand experience of the dance industry from day one (page 29).

VESALII ICONES EXPECT
BY KOKORO (BSO NEW MUSIC ENSEMBLE) AND AVANT GARDE DANCE
An exciting and edgy fusion of contemporary live music with hip hop dance and solo cello MUSIC: SIR PETER MAXWELL DAVIES CHOREOGRAPHY: TONY ADIGUN CONDUCTOR: MARK FORKGEN CELLO: VITTORIO CECCANTI
PDSW PERFORMANCE SEASON – THURSDAY NIGHT IS DANCE NIGHT
Pavilion Dance South West and Kokoro, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra new music ensemble, join forces to perform Vesalii icones, one of the greatest achievements by the internationally renowned composer and former Master of the Queen’s Music, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies.
Vesalii icones is a fusion of dance and music, inspired by religious and anatomical imagery. It takes the Christian tradition of the “Stations of the Cross” – i.e. a series of images depicting Jesus’s betrayal, condemnation and way to the cross – and combines them with 16th century anatomical drawings by Andreas Vesalius, the “father of anatomy”, which gave the piece its name (Vesalii icones [Lat.] = Vesalius’s images). The result is an experimental, expressionistic and edgy piece in which a dancer and a cellist are protagonists. Controversial when premiered over 40 years ago, the work retains all its impact and power to disturb and challenge. Tony Adigun, Artistic Director of hip hop company Avant Garde Dance, has created a new choreography in response to the piece, with the solo cello part performed by the distinguished Italian cellist Vittorio Ceccanti. In the first half, Kokoro musicians play instrumental works by Maxwell Davies, including three specially commissioned dance pieces performed by hip hop dancers from Bournemouth. PACT WITH POINTLESSNESS BY WENDY HOUSTOUN
Thomas JM Wilson, Total Theatre
A funny and moving solo from one of Britain’s most iconic female performers, combining spoken word and movement
EXPECT
The effect is a kind of punk-Beckett.
The Guardian
A mix of comedy, spoken word and performance, it offers a frank demonstration of how it feels to be knocked sideways by death, then renegotiate and carry on. A double act for one, Pact With Pointlessness twists and turns with crackling wit and ridiculous movement in a kind of “stand up meets vaudeville, old time patter meets online chatter” routine.
Pact with Pointlessness is funny and moving in equal measure and follows hot on the heels of Houstoun’s successful 50 Acts, winner of the 2013 TMA award for achievement in dance. Pact with Pointlessness is written and performed by Wendy Houstoun with lighting design by Chris Copland. Co-produced by Southbank Centre, Lakeside Arts Centre, Nottingham, with Dance4, The Nightingale Theatre Brighton, South East Dance and Dance East, with additional support from Arts Council England. www.wendyhoustoun.net

This programme, co-commissioned by Pavilion Dance South West and the Royal Opera House, combines two brand new works by Royal Ballet Choreographic Affiliate Mayuri Boonham. Both pieces draw on sacred Indian texts to explore questions of creation and human life.
Ex Nihilo is a company piece that uses contemporary dance, classical Indian Bharatanatyam and inspirational lighting design to offer a poetic interpretation of the time before the “Big Bang”.
The Human Edge draws inspiration from the legend of the goddess Sati and her marriage to Shiva. The choreography evokes the drama of Sati’s life and death as a metaphor for the life cycle of stars. Mayuri Boonham is Artistic Director of ATMA Dance. Her dance installation Erhebung, devised with sculptor Jeff Lowe, was shown at the Russell Cotes Art Gallery in May 2013. Ex Nihilo / The Human Edge premièred at the ROH Linbury Studio on 29 April.

PDSW PERFORMANCE SEASON – THURSDAY NIGHT IS DANCE NIGHT
Murmur and Inked are two new dance pieces from PDSW Playtime Artist Aakash Odedra, who returns to Pavilion Dance after his sell-out success Rising two years ago. Diagnosed with dyslexia at a young age, Aakash Odedra found conventional education at school very challenging. As written language was so alien, dance became his preferred mode of expression, an experience that triggered the creation of the first piece, Murmur. The second piece, Inked, choreographed by Laurence Olivier Award winner Damien Jalet, uses tattoos and the dancer’s body to represent the theme of transformation. Aakash Odedra is one of the most sought after British choreographer/dancers today. Originally trained in the South Asian styles of Kathak and Bharatanatyam, he has developed a distinctive movement style following intensive training with some of the most prestigious choreographers in the world.
Murmur was co-commissioned by Arts at Dartington (Dartington Hall Trust, UK), Bora Bora (Aarhus, DK), Curve Theatre (Leicester, UK), Centre des arts, Scène conventionnée “écritures numériques” (Enghien-les-Bains, France), DanceXchange (Birmingham, UK), La Comète, Scène Nationale de Châlons-en-Champagne (France), La Maison de la Musique de Nanterre (Nanterre, France), Maison des Arts de Créteil (Créteil, France), Pavilion Dance South West (Bournemouth, UK), Sampad (Birmingham, UK), Studio Programme, The Royal Ballet (London, UK ).

It builds on the success of the past conferences to bring together dance artists, academics, new media practitioners, venue managers, producers and programmers and a wealth of international contributors to perform, debate, share ideas and network with UK peers. Together participants will bring a positive future for the development of new dance talent in the UK.

The starting point is the realisation that dance practices with significance today are grounded in histories of a range of African Diasporic dance forms, and in the histories of the dance practitioners and companies that have used them. The more we understand the histories then, the more will we foster future developments in African Diasporic forms. The conference is delivered by The Association of Dance of the African Diaspora (ADAD), IRIE! dance theatre, De Montfort University and Pavilion Dance South West. The conference keynote address will be delivered by Zab Maboungou (Choreographer/Dancer/Director of Compagnie Danse Nyata Nyata, Canada) and Sharon Watson (Artistic Director of Phoenix Dance, UK). The three days will be hosted by Hakeem Onibudo, Choreographer, Teacher, British Council Ambassador, Creator of Impact Dance and Red Carpet Movie Premiere Host. @hakeemonibudo www.hakeemonibudo.co.uk The full programme will be available on our website from 1st September. *Early bird tickets available until 30th September.
