Our spring performance season now runs from February to the start of June and includes some real treats from international companies, from choreographers we have supported during their creation process and from our partners.
This season is full of the wonderful results of that support. In February two of our “Dream” Artists, Karla Shacklock (page 8) and Neon Dance (page 10) present works co-commissioned by us, about themes we all can connect to, The Happiness and Empathy.
We continue to work with Lighthouse, Poole; Mayflower Theatre, Southampton and The Point, Eastleigh to encourage audiences to experience dance at different scales and in different venues in the area. See page 5 for more details about Dance Along The South Coast.
Then on 24th March we will present the final performance of Joli Vyann’s tour of their new work, Imbalance (page 13). This is special to us as it is Pavilion Dance South West’s first full commission and we are creating and supporting it specifically to tour affordably into small venues and village halls across the South West of England.
Internationally we are delighted to be showcasing two outstanding Spanish dance companies. In March we present Medea by Thomas Noone Dance (page 11) and, in May, the extraordinary Aracaladanza (page 24) with Vuelos, their latest show for all the family, which will be a visual feast, equally enjoyed by adults and children alike.
We are also proud to present May Contain Food (page 15), the new production from Luca Silvestrini’s Protein, because we supported the idea with financial investment from the early stages of its research and development. All this as well as the tantalising range of opportunities for everyone to participate makes the first half of 2016 a dance treasure trove. Enjoy! The PDSW team
WELCOME
A central part of Pavilion Dance South West’s work, often unseen by the public, is our support for dance companies to develop new ideas and create new productions.

DANCE CAN CHANGE LIVES
YOU CAN HELP SECURE THE FUTURE
Dance is an art form as well as healthy exercise. It can enrich communities, improve public health and increase social skills and life satisfaction.
We are very fortunate to receive support from Arts Council England and from Bournemouth Borough Council to help run our core activities.
WE CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN Our work here at Pavilion Dance South West is all about connecting as many people as possible with dance. We run more than 40 classes and workshops for all ages and abilities, and we make the cultural landscape in the South West more exciting and diverse for you, our audiences. As a charity we subsidise every single ticket to keep prices affordable, and as a not-forprofit organisation we re-invest all income to fund new projects and to support the development of choreographers and new dance performances.
But, like all public investment, this has reduced in recent years, so we need to secure a future for our work. You can help secure this future.
This summer has been the best and scariest summer of my life. Leaving school has been a huge step for me and PDSW has always been open with something for me to do. Without it my life would be very different.

EMPATHY EXPECT
BY NEON DANCE RECOMMENDED FOR AGES 12+
THU FEB
25 7.30pm
Tickets: £12/£10/£8/£6 (details p. 37)
An enchanting theatrical exploration of empathy, featuring movement, sound and innovative laser light design What makes our behaviour uniquely human? Touching and emotionally charged, Empathy reflects on what influences us to empathise with others. Five dancers jostle for position – folding, lifting and balancing against one another as they navigate through a beguiling laser light design. Taking inspiration from the work of psychologist Simon Baron-Cohen (Zero Degrees of Empathy), Empathy explores the human emotional spectrum by creating a truly theatrical experience where movement, sound and lighting combine and contribute in equal parts.
PERFORMANCE PROGRAMME
Empathy is supported through public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England and by Pavilion Dance South West and Swindon Dance. Empathy is part of the Audience Labs programme from Sound and Music, the national charity for new music. Additional support from Royal Opera House, London and Uferstudios, Berlin. INTERNATIONAL DANCE FROM SPAIN CO-PRESENTED BY PAVILION DANCE SOUTH WEST AND LIGHTHOUSE POOLE
MEDEA
BY THOMAS NOONE DANCE
EXPECT
A re-telling of the classical Greek Medea myth, powerfully brought back to life through dance, sound and lighting
Euripides’ Medea is one of the most dramatic tales of betrayal ever written. In this contemporary re-telling we witness the loved and the unloved, the cherished and the scorned, pitting themselves against one another using a rich, physical language that moves from powerful to fragile and intimate within seconds.
Medea confronts us with our own weaknesses and rages, played out by the characters lashing out and in turn being wounded. The skill and athleticism of the dancers is heightened by an intense electronic sound score and a striking white set bathed in a stirring lighting design by Peter Lundin.

TRIPLE BILL 2016 EXPECT
BY PHOENIX DANCE THEATRE
A mesmerising evening of highly skilful dance to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the UK’s longest standing contemporary dance company outside London Shakespeare’s timeless themes of desire, duplicity and unrequited love are brought to life in Kate Flatt’s Undivided Loves. Fusing sound, words and dance, Shakespeare’s most intimate, mysterious and radical sonnets are re-imagined to Adriano Adewale’s vibrant and percussive score. In contrast, Dutch/Israeli choreographer Itzik Galili reworks his piece, Until.With/Out.Enough, which was co-commissioned by The Royal Ballet and explores the concept of the enclosed space that exists within our minds.
PERFORMANCE PROGRAMME
Finally, the quirky and playful Bloom by award-winning choreographer Caroline Finn explores the darkly comic expressions of life and humanity.
Until.With/Out.Enough is a co-commission between The Royal Ballet and Phoenix Dance Theatre. Undivided Loves is co-commissioned with Watford Palace Theatre. Phoenix Dance Theatre gratefully acknowledges support from PRS for Music Foundation, The Idlewild Trust and The Goldsmiths’ Company. An exciting fusion of acrobatics, dance and circus that explores our obsession with technology How well connected are we? And how do we separate ourselves from the virtual chaos surrounding us? It is rare nowadays not to “log in” at every opportunity – at the breakfast table, during nights out with friends, or even in bed! Fusing highly-skilled acrobatics, athletic yet graceful dance and circus with choreography from internationally-renowned Olivier Award nominee Jonathan Lunn, Imbalance is an energetic and thoughtprovoking performance that explores our obsessive dependency on technology, asking whether our lives are “in” or “out” of balance.
PERFORMANCE PROGRAMME

Roaring, swinging, 1920s-themed dance theatre, featuring a cinematic soundtrack, eye-catching visuals and world-class break dance combined with the spirit of Lindy Hop and Charleston Speakeasy is a reinterpretation of the classic tale of Faust, set in a seemingly normal prohibition era bar. But the owner and his patrons harbour a dark secret – and who can tell the true nature of the charismatic barman? Featuring digital visual effects, a fusion of world-class breaking combined with Lindy Hop and Charleston, and a soundtrack that combines contemporary legends like Tom Waits and Clint Mansell with swinging big band music of the roaring 20s, Speakeasy taps into the spirit of gangsters, bootleggers, gamblers, flappers, and hepcats of the time.

DANCE DEGREE PERFORMANCE PROJECT
The BA (Hons) Dance Degree at Arts University Bournemouth runs in association with Pavilion Dance South West. This is a unique partnership, pairing a specialist arts university with a national dance development organisation. Therefore the course is rooted in a professional and industry-focused context, with regular access to professional performance and contact with dancers, choreographers and producers at the forefront of their profession. The course offers the students the opportunity to explore their potential as dance artists, and we will regularly feature insights into their work and how the public can connect with it in our season brochures. From 9th to 13th May, first-year students will work with digital artist Wayne Sables for a unique performance project. Wayne Sables’ work combines physical naturalistic movement with digital technologies. His passion is creating a unique experience for both performers and audiences and transforming everyday spaces into intimate performance environments. The week-long, intensive residency will create relationships between dance, film, projection, augmented reality, dancers and the public. Using the spaces, places and landmarks around the town centre, the aim is to create a multi faceted, site specific performance that will engage audiences through a variety of media. Watch out for the performers around Bournemouth on Friday, 13th May. For more information about the degree contact Jane White, Course Leader BA (Hons) Dance jwhite@aub.ac.uk

Having Parkinson’s is a real pain (or other words to the same effect). However - I have found that there are some silver linings to be found in the situation. One of the most important of these is the Friday dance class with teachers Sophia and Aimee. They are cheerful, encouraging, sympathetic, supportive, instructive, enthusiastic and too many more adjectives to mention. It seems to me that I always feel better physically and in mood after these classes. Every part of our bodies is exercised and we are left with the means to keep exercise going during the week. The classes are very important to me and provide a lifeline if I am feeling low. In short, they are an absolute Godsend. Long may they continue! Sue Milligan, a Bournemouth class participant

We finish off with a Jam, which is a chance to play freely with what you have learnt and discovered. Please come prepared, wearing suitable clothing for physical and dynamic movement that is based in close contact and agile partner work. Teachers: Richard Parker and Suna Imre
