Dance can change lives. You can help secure its future.

DANCE CAN CHANGE LIVES Dance is an art form as well as healthy exercise. It can enrich communities, improve public health and increase social skills and life satisfaction.

WE CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN Our work here at Pavilion Dance South West is all about connecting as many people as possible with dance, by running more than 40 weekly classes and workshops for all ages and abilities and by supporting the cultural landscape in the South West to be more exciting and diverse for you, our audiences.

YOU CAN HELP SECURE THE FUTURE We are very fortunate to receive investment from Arts Council England and from Bournemouth Borough Council to run our core activities, and we earn some income through hiring out our venue and selling tickets. But as a charity we subsidise every single ticket to keep prices affordable, and as a not-for-profit organisation we re-invest all income to support new projects and artists. It is likely that public funding for the arts will decrease even more than it already has, so we need your support to secure a future for our work

SUPPORT US FOCUS: DANCE FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE Dancing has many benefits for children and young people. It can help explore boundaries, boost confidence and encourage active and healthy life styles. Dance also has a positive impact on literacy and memory. We work with schools and local authorities to ensure that dance can be enjoyed by as many children and young people as possible. We are delighted that Yellow Buses have partnered with us for the collaborative fundraising appeal “Get On Board! to support us in this work (see page 7 or visit www.pdsw.org.uk/getonboard).

If you would like to know more about how you can help, please visit www.pdsw.org.uk/support-us, call us on 01202 203637 or email us.

BY THE URBAN PLAYGROUND TEAM

A fast-paced, funny and risk-taking blend of parkour, dance and theatre set on a steam engine

PERFORMANCE SEASON

Urban explorers discover the skeletal remains of a machine that changed the world. Captivated, they open a furnace and shovel coal on the fires of the past ... What follows is a humorous, fastpaced parade of scenes and characters, from a hilarious Wild West heist and a James Bond chase to the joys of inner-city commuting, through a breathtaking blend of parkour, dance and theatre. Steam has been co-commissioned by Pavilion Dance South West, South East Dance and The Civic, Barnsley. The performances on pages 4 to 6 are part of the Hip Hop Dance Summit on 8 & 9 May. The summit is an opportunity for artists to present their work to national and international producers and venue promoters, and to network with peers. FUEL PRESENTS

THE SPALDING SUITE

WRITTEN AND CONCEIVED BY INUA ELLAMS DIRECTED BY BENJI REID

EXPECT

Poetry, beatboxing and hip hop combine to celebrate the elegance and beauty of basketball The Spalding Suite is a new physical theatre show inspired by the UK’s basketball sub-culture. Seen from a British perspective, The Spalding Suite gets to the heart and soul of the gravity-defying game and delves into the hopes and dreams of those who play it. Six dynamic performers mix live beatboxing, hip hop, music, moves and poetry, taking us from the fleeting high of the score and the robust camaraderie of the team, to the poignant lows of a body too worn to play the game.

BY HYPE DANCE COMPANY

Inspired by the lives of world champion boxers and supported by local hip hop crew, Shake, professional dance and boxing meet in the ring to fuse Ingle Gym’s footwork patterns with contemporary hip hop dance theatre. Through high-energy and hard-hitting movement combined with the melodic rhythm of fists connecting with leather, the show exposes the guidance, influences and stories from Ingle Gym. The humble Sheffieldbased gym has produced champions such as Prince Naseem Hamed, Johnny Nelson, Herol “Bomber” Graham and Ryan Rhodes. With a moving voiceover from world-renowned trainer, Brendan Ingle, the work hits you where you least expect it.

5 SOLDIERS BY ROSIE KAY DANCE COMPANY

23/24

SAT SUN MAY

7.30pm (post-show talk, Sat) 3pm (Sun)

Venue: The Semaphore Arms, Blandford Camp, Dorset DT11 8RH

EXPECT

A powerful physical and emotional tour de force about war and the impact it has on those who endure it 5 SOLDIERS provides an intimate view of the training that prepares our soldiers for the sheer physicality of combat, for the possibility of injury, and the impact conflict has on the bodies and minds of everyone it reaches. The piece has a powerful physicality, moments of humour and is full of honesty, all inspired by input from serving and former soldiers.

I am a former Green Jacket soldier... I found the performance deeply moving, relevant and so representative of how soldiers are and how they cope with the contrasting aspects of their lives. Arresting and disturbing.

PERFORMANCE SEASON

5 SOLDIERS is funded by Arts Council England, ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, Enterprise Catalyst, European Regional Development Fund 2007–13 and supported by DanceXchange. Original production commissioned by International Dance Festival Birmingham.

We are pleased to offer a bus service to Blandford Camp for £3, available to book online, by phone or in person. Please call 01202 203630 for details. As this is a live military venue all ticket holders must give their full name, address and vehicle registration at the time of booking. Please bring photo ID and note that bags and vehicles may be searched upon entry. Free parking is available. Parental guidance is advised as the performance contains some scenes of violence. FRI SAT JUN

26/27 9pm

Venue: Richmond Gardens Car Park, Bournemouth BH1 1DJ, top floor

EXPECT

Tickets: various. Pay what you like between ÂŁ3 and ÂŁ15

A modern-day re-imagination of traditional English folk dance on top of a car park with views across Bournemouth Night. We find a space in the margins of the city in which to gather: to start an ad hoc ceremony, to stamp our feet and shake our limbs, to dance in the face of an ending. The music is a rider and we are running horses. Of Riders and Running Horses is a stirring and powerful dance event. Six female dancers and a live band conjure a new kind of old dance, an insistent rhythm, a joyful step into what it means to move together.

PERFORMANCE SEASON

Directed by Dan Canham. Created by the company with live music by Luke Harney (AKA Typesun) and Sam Halmarack. Produced by MAYK.
