Residents fume over informal taxi rank ZELDRÉ SWANEPOEL
RESIDENTS versus public transport commuters. This is the drama unfolding with the informal taxi rank on the corner of William Moffett Expressway and Springfield Road in Walmer. Minibus taxis are using the piece of vacant land which is central to four surrounding shopping centres, namely Walmer Park, Moffett on Main, 17th Quarter and the Figtree complex, to drop off and collect passengers who work nearby or shop at these centres. Many residents of the surrounding area, however, are not happy about the informal rank and want it shut down.
Resident Tersia Strydom said the area is unhygienic and unsafe, and an eyesore. “The ground at the entrance and exit of the taxi rank has deep and unsafe burrows, owing to the continuous high traffic use of the area,” Strydom said. She also complained about being harassed by the hawkers next to the taxi rank, and passers-by being mugged. “The area is being used as a toilet facility by people waiting for the taxis. This is very unhygienic, unsightly, smelly and very offensive for the residents of this area to be exposed to on a daily basis. The informal taxi rank is unlawful. Shut it down. If not, do something about the area,” she said. Ward 6 DA Councillor, Retief Odendaal, said
Maximum sentences for Uitenhage criminals NCEBA DLADLA UITENHAGE Cluster Commander Brigadier Ruphus Pandela commended the Justice Department and members of the South African Police Services (SAPS) for their role in getting five suspects to receive maximum sentences at the Magistrate Court last Thursday.
Families
According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Gerda Swart, the accused were arrested for hijacking a vehicle, kidnapping and robbing a man of his bank cards in KwaNobuhle on 24 June 2010. They allegedly withdrew a large sum of cash from the victim’s bank account as they were planning a business robbery that was supposed to happen in Uitenhage on 26 June of the same year.
The planned robbery was foiled after police received valuable information and deployed members of the SAPS, Tactical Response Unit and other units in and around the CBD area. * Zukisani Arthur Kume (22) was sentenced to a total of 38 years while his brother Thandile Kume (22) was sentenced to a total 30 years imprisonment. Masiza Matshoba (25) and Vuyisile Staat (25) were both sentenced to an effective 20 years imprisonment while Livingstone Heavyweight Zilindile (30) was sentenced to 38 years imprisonment. “We commend members of the Justice Department, the SAPS role-players and the investigating officers who have worked tirelessly to ensure that the armed robbers are brought to justice and get the maximum sentences they deserve,” said Brig. Pandela.

although the area has developed into a big business node over the last number of years, Council has neglected to provide much needed public transportation infrastructure. “The William Moffett/Main Road Walmer intersection is undoubtedly one of the busiest intersections in the Metro. The lack of a formally demarcated area for public transportation has resulted in minibus taxis causing absolute chaos in the area as said taxis stop, park and turn wherever they want- often putting the lives of other motorists at risk. The status quo simply cannot remain; Council has to intervene and provide a dedicated area for public transportation,” Odendaal said. He said that when the informal taxi rank is
turned into a formal area for taxis, it would enable council to provide policing, making it safer for both commuters and residents. He acknowledges the grievances of the residents but emphasised that public transport commuters have a right of access to the area. Strydom said the majority of the residents do not support the erection of a permanent taxi rank in this area. “We cannot wait for years for the Metro to find a workable solution. We cannot sit back for 3 to 4 years and wait for paperwork to be pushed back and forth.” According to Odendaal, William Moffett Expressway is also earmarked to have an IPTS route.
Call to reduce unnecessary expenses of funerals NCEBA DLADLA FUNERALS in their current form in the African communities should change and become the solemn events meant only to lay the dearly departed to rest, according to Bishop Makhosi Ngcoza. Head of Flames of Fire Ministries in Mount Ayliff, Bishop Ngcoza believes there is too big a burden laid on the shoulders of the bereaved families and that many of the costs they incur in preparation for the funeral are truly unnecessary. “As an evangelist, I have been couselling bereaved families around the province and discovered that some of the difficulties they faced stem from the costs they incur before, during and after the funeral,” said Ngcoza, adding that some of these “unnecessary demands” leave the family strained financially. “This includes the time they take to do a funeral service. The longer the service, the more people become hungry and need food to eat,” said Ngcoza. He added that if speakers could be reduced to no more than two per family or organisation or church, that
could cut the six hour service by at least three hours. Ngcoza cannot see the logic behind a memorial service, if the speakers will be saying the same things as at the funeral service. Some of the unnecessary expenses that mourners can do without, according to Ngcoza, include: * the food families buy for the people who have come to comfort them, * expensive clothes people buy for the funeral * hiring of tent or hall for “Ukuxhom’ibhatyi service” which is for official handingover to family of church uniform and the meals that go with it. This message, according to Ngcoza, was not only meant for poor families. Rich families sometimes cause the strain, he said. Ngcoza will be meeting Pastors, Bishops, Chiefs, Kings and Ward Councillors at the Roman Catholic Church in Mount Ayliff on 5 June to discuss these concerns. He said churches from other parts of the province should expect him soon. “Otherwise, they can invite me to come and give a talk. Churches invite me, and I do come,” he said.

‘Jesus’ told the man to buy groceries for the Motherwell family NCEBA DLADLA Nombulelo Makhubalo, the mother of the twins Jeft and Shem Makhubalo (11) who went missing last week, experienced two miracles in the space of a day. Not only had her twins returned home unharmed (see story below), but a stranger also bought the family much needed groceries. “I had sent my eldest son Moses (15) to the shop to buy electricity tokens. I saw him coming back with a man carrying groceries. Without saying a word, the man dropped the food and left.” Nombulelo did not know the man. She asked Moses who it was and why he brought the food. “I was standing in the queue to buy electricity and the man was behind me. He asked where I stayed and with whom. He asked whether we had food at home and I said I
didn’t think so and then he bought these,” said Moses. According to Moses, the man hired a (jikeleza) taxi for the two of them and they brought the food. He said he was hoping the man would tell his mother who he was but he did not. “He said to me, Jesus told him to buy the food for us and left,” said Moses. “I do not know the man. I don’t even know what to do with this food,” said Nombulelo who is running a small business selling clothing in Korsten. Her husband and father of her four children, Monde Makhubalo died a few years ago.

Run-away Motherwell twins found unharmed NCEBA DLADLA MOTHERWELL twins who reportedly went missing on Tuesday last week were found unharmed the following day in nearby bushes The twins, Jeft and Shem Makhubalo (11), of Ntloni Street, NU12 Motherwell were found around 7.30 am by municipal
employees working in the bushes near Addo Road in Motherwell. They were taken to the police who returned them to their home. “It appeared that the boys were afraid of some bullies who beat them every day after school and decided to bunk school and hide in the bushes,” said police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge. The boys’ clothing was filthy and muddy.
They said they slept in a drain. They used an old blanket they found nearby to cover themselves and also made a fire. Their distraught mother Nombulelo Makhubalo (38) reported the two boys lost after she came back from work in Korsten around 6pm on Tuesday and discovered that they did not return from Mbasa Primary School where they are Grade 5 pupils. “We were afraid of the boys from Mfesane
Primary School. They beat us every day,” said Jeft Shem agreed that the elder boys ask for money from them every day and beat them. This was corroborated by another boy (12) who attends Melisizwe Primary School. He said this had been going on for some time now. If they didn’t have 50 cents to give, the other boys beat them - every day.

Football fans welcome soccer giants PE Express Indaba’s NCEBA DLADLA talks to Nelson Mandela Bay elite football fans about Soweto Premier Soccer League (PSL) giants Kaizer Chiefs and arch-rivals Orlando Pirates who could possibly compete for the third edition of the Carling Black Label Cup at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium on 27 July. “It’ll be good for me to select my own Chiefs squad and then see my boys performing in front of my own eyes,” he said. ) 26 year-old Siyabulela Tshanga of Walmer township, who supports Mamelodi Sundowns, said, “My interest in the Chiefs vs Pirates match here will be on the attendance which is usually poor. The two teams deserve a lot of support so I hope Eastern Cape fans will come in numbers to support such a game. ) An Orlando Pirates fan Mthuthuzeli Mbodla of Motherwell said, “It’d be good to see Ama-
bhakabhaka (Pirates) thrashing Kaizer Chiefs once again here in Nelson Mandela Bay. Pirates won the Carling Black Label Cup twice and will win it for the third time here, without a doubt.” ) Chwayita Gaxela of Motherwell had a different view. She said, “What is this farce about Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs? I’m a Pirates fan, but I don’t like it that it’s always Pirates and Chiefs that must come here. Other PSL teams must also get an opportunity to come and play in Nelson Mandela Bay.”
) Felese Funani (28) of Motherwell said, “Bringing the match here will be welcome. It will be a good thing, and I believe my boys (Chiefs) will do us proud.” ) “I am not much of a football fan but I think it will be good for the match to come here in the Bay for local fans to see their team (Chiefs) win,” said Nandipha Mangele (21)
from Walmer township. ) “I have not been following soccer for quite some time, but I hope ticket prices for such a match will not be expensive to ensure that most soccer loving people attend,” said Claudrick Zealand (20) of Summerstrand. He said he believed that the match would be attended “just like the recent match involving the Blue Bulls in Nelson Mandela Bay.” ) Walmer township’s Mongezi Jamda (29) said, it would be a good thing because Carling Black Label gives the fans an opportunity to select their own teams for the match.

Accounting winter school helps matrics JANELLE Labuschagne’s marks for accounting in matric last year shot up from 30 per cent in the first term to 72% in the finals while Joshua Jacobs’s marks rose from 43% to 68% – results they attribute to attending an accounting winter school at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. They are now first year BCom (Accounting) students at NMMU – and encourage Grade 12s to attend this year’s winter school, taking place from July 8 to 12. Registration for the school, which is sponsored by Deloitte, closes at the end of May. NMMU Accounting 1 lecturer and winter school coordinator, Ansulene Prinsloo, said the winter school’s purpose, in addition to promoting an understanding of Grade 12 Accounting, was to give matrics a taste of university life and help them realise it was within everybody’s reach, provided they worked hard and produced good marks. “Some learners last year didn’t even realise the possibility of going to varsity.” Of the 350 that attended last year, 35 enrolled for BCom (Accounting) degrees at NMMU, with several others pursuing other degrees. This year, 500 learners can attend the school. “We are trying to improve their accounting marks to increase their APS (admission points score) and improve their chances of getting into university.” The outstanding matric results of one of the BCom first years, Chelsea Tompkins, saw her receiving a ViceChancellor’s Scholarship – covering the entire cost of her degree, provided she attained good marks year on year. Five other top
achievers received a bursary from the Thuthuka Programme, which is growing the number of black Chartered Accountants in South Africa. “The winter school is as much for top learners as it is for those who are struggling with accounting,” said Prinsloo. The week-long school, which runs from 8am to 2.30pm each day, covers the main components of the matric syllabus, including inventory and VAT, companies (financial statements and notes), cash flow statement and asset disposal, analysis and interpretation of financial statements and manufacturing (production cost statement and costing). It is taught using the School of Accounting’s teaching model – which includes lectures, homework and tutorials. “Real learning happens in the tutorials, where the learners have to work through exercises,” said Prinsloo. The 20 tutors at the school include the School of Accounting’s existing tutors and top students, as well as staff from Deloitte. All schools throughout Nelson Mandela Bay have been invited to attend. Those attending will receive full notes, as well as old exam papers. In September, the School of Accounting is also launching a three-day school for Grade 11 pupils. Next year’s winter school will be expanded to include maths. The cost of NMMU’s accounting winter school is R50 per person. Those wanting to attend must register by May 31. Certificates were issued to the 29 men and women from 12 Local Football Associations (LFAs) who underwent the training and wrote the examinations under the leadership of Stan Campher at Nelson Mandela Bay stadium on Sunday. The training was offered with the financial assistance of Sedgars Sports.
According to Safa NMB General Secretary, Sikhumbuzo Wakashe, the region has a number of experienced referees but needed a group of young, energetic and physically fit referees to phase in. He said he was overjoyed that this included female whistle-blowers as well. The next step for these qualified Level-4 referees is to go for the Level-5 Referees Course to be able to achieve the highest status. Speaking during the event, former Cricket SA CEO Gerald Majola, who represents Sedgars, made a commitment that his company will continue sponsoring the programme of developing local referees.
NMB boxers not part of Premier League NCEBA DLADLA NATIONAL boxers who will be taking part in the new Boxing Premier League (BPL) scheduled to take place from next month (June) have been announced and they do not include boxers from Nelson Mandela Bay. The inaugural BPL, an innovation by former SABC Boxing Commentator Dicksy Ngqula to promote boxing and uplift the standard of boxers, was launched in East London last week. Sixteen boxers in the flyweight, bantamweight, featherweight and lightweight divisions will be taking part in the league that carries R1 million prize money for the winner. Most of the boxers selected come from the Eastern Cape, according to Boxing South Africa
(BSA) Director of Operations Loyiso Mtya. Nelson Mandela Bay boxers will, however, not be taking part, according to local BSA Service Provider Mthunzi Mapitiza. He said, “Our boxers were given information like everybody else in the country but they applied too late.” The boxers would not necessarily be part of the programme by merely applying. They had to write a motivation letter to BSA and the BPL organisers explaining why they should be chosen. Silindokuhle Boxing Promotions boss Sibongile Nkebe applied for a number of boxers in his camp “but it was unfortunately late. Bavuke kade (they woke up late!)” The next boxing tournament in Nelson Mandela Bay will be promoted by Silindoku-hle BP in Walmer/Gqeberha on June 16, said Mapitiza.
