Big break for DJ brothers NWABISA FUNDE
T
HE South African award-winning Mi Casa, which is made up of the trio Dr Duda, J-Something and Mo-T, ran a competition on Instagram that called on all DJs and producers to remix their hit song, Nana. Two brothers from Bethelsdorp comfortably won first place and will be heading on to a new venture alongside Mi Casa.
Ruwayne and Waven Sebia decided to take on music at the ages of 12 and 14 respectively. The duo who are known as “Jay Em” describe their music as “down-tempo” were recently announced as the winner of the remix competition and they will proceed to get a chance to work alongside the award-winning trio on a song. “When we lost our close friend, Meelah Munnick, who composed the song, J’Adore, my brother and I decided to pursue a career of making music and trying to create a legacy for our
friend,” said Waven. The competition included a number of different DJs and producers from across South Africa, all in the running for an opportunity to work on a song with the award winning Mi Casa. The competition allowed fans to upload their songs onto a website that was specifically designed for the competition and thereafter people across the nation could vote for their favourite version of the remixed song. Jay Em proved to be a favourite among many South Africans and are
very excited to share their “PE sound” with the rest of the nation. “This is only the beginning for us; we are extremely excited because this means this is a step forward in our journey in the music industry,” said Ruwayne.
; Waven and Ruwayne Sebia are excited to be collaborating with the biggest trio in music Mi Casa.

Last night of the Proms in the Bay This past weekend saw the 17th year of celebrating the ‘Last Night of the Proms in Africa’, in aid of St Francis Hospice. These festive concerts also serve to commemorate the life of the late Philipp Rowland Gutsche and were held at the Feather Market Centre. The event featured a mass choir and the Eastern Cape Philharmonic orchestra, who were in fine form under the baton of maestro Richard Cock. Much-needed funding was raised for St Francis Hospice through hosting this prestigious event. PHOTO:PRO

East London set to host 12th IRONMAN 70.3 in 2019 REPORTER THE hugely popular Standard Bank IRONMAN 70.3 South Africa is set to take place on Sunday, January 27, next year. The beautiful city of East London offers miles of beachfront and rich cultural history for athletes and spectators to enjoy. The Standard Bank IRONMAN 70.3 South Africa started in 2008 and quickly caught the eye of many triathletes. It now boasts almost 3 000 athletes who register for the event year after year. It is regarded as one of the toughest and oldest 70.3 events on the circuit. This year saw South Africans, Matt Trautman and Jeanni Seymour, winning the men’s and women’s races respectively despite having some strong competition from the international field. It was a fairytale for Trautman, as he had a crushed lumbar vertebra and multiple level
spinal fusions just a year before he stood on the start line. IRONMAN South Africa’s managing director, Keith Bowler, said to see how this race had grown and developed over the last 11 years had been phenomenal. “The quality of race experience, the challenge it offers and the unique atmosphere are just a few of the reasons this race has reached this level of popularity among athletes. “It is especially encouraging to see that our international numbers have increased by such a margin, bringing more visitors to the region and further demonstrating the growing international appeal of the event,” Bowler said. General entries to the 2019 Standard Bank IRONMAN 70.3 South Africa are already open.

The Port of Port Elizabeth’s latest quarterly Fishing for Charity drive helped to donate 230 pairs of school shoes, thanks to the generosity of participating anglers from in and around Nelson Mandela Bay. Each participant donated a brand-new pair of school shoes as their admission fee for the event, hosted by Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA). The shoes were handed over to Mngcunube Primary School in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage last week Friday, much to the delight of learners and staff. These community fishing days are part of TNPA’s People’s Port vision, which includes promoting greater public access and ensuring a vibrant port system, connecting local communities to port activities. Public to choose design for pedestrian bridge REPORTER IN a matter of a few weeks, the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) will complete the Flemming Street environmental upgrade, an important link in creating a connection between the Vuyisile Mini Square and the Baakens area. The improvements on Flemming Street have seen the reconfiguration of the street into a beautiful landscape landing itself for unique public events and the arts. It now offers additional parking to ease the congestion on Govan Mbeki Road and generally the space lands itself for multiple uses as another meeting spot in the Bay. To complete the link between the inner city and the Baakens, the MBDA is in the final phase of planning a pedestrian bridge that will span the
Baakens River from the cityside to the valleyside. The bridge, when constructed, will lead to a boardwalk connection to the rest of the valley offerings. The agency and its consultant team have produced a number of designs of which the public must choose a design. MDBA spokesperson Luvuyo Bangazi said, “The Baakens Valley precinct is one of the key focus areas of the agency for the current financial year. A significant amount of work has gone into the planning and design of the upgrade and rejuvenation of this precinct.” For the last few years, the agency has been chipping away and implementing the master plan. “The Baakens is special because of its history and heritage linked to South End, as well as its unique position, an intersection of river and port at the heart of the city,” Bangazi said.
Update on listeria outbreak REPORTER THE Government, led by the Departments of Health (DoH), Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF), Trade and Industry (the dti) and the National Consumer Commission (NCC) and the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS), has released a statement regarding the efforts to control and end the listeria outbreak. . Since the identification of the source of the outbreak and recall of implicated products, the number of cases of listeria has declined drastically as evident in the latest situation report (www.nicd.ac.za). . The recall and destruction of implicated food products, both within South Africa and internationally (those that were exported), have been closely monitored by the National Consumer Commission (NCC), the Department of Envi-
ronmental Affairs and district environmental health practitioners (EHPs) in various municipalities. Certificates of destruction have been received from national and international agencies. . Factories, which produced implicated products and ceased production on March 5, have been inspected by a team of national, provincial, district officials and World Health Organisation (WHO) food safety experts. All these factories have commenced with an extensive revision of their production processes and safety procedures. The implementation of their plans will be monitored by district officials with the support of the same inspection team to ensure adherence to national and international norms and standards regarding food safety. . DAFF continues to liaise with international trading partners to provide reassurance that the risk of Listeria is confined to recalled products, and that all implicated products are recalled and
“Studies have shown that this area has great potential as a tourism node, a creative industry hub and in future, a mixed use development precinct that will see people live, work and play in the area. All the plans we are implementing are aimed at capitalising on all of these aspects.” The purpose of the Baakens Valley pedestrian bridge is to continue the walkway currently underway at the back of Vuyisile Mini Square on Flemming Street. The bridge connection is an important component in the city’s movement plan which is to link the Baakens Valley with the city centre. It will further enable access to more parking areas on the north bank of the river for events on the south bank. This will influence increased numbers of visitors to activities happening in the Tramways Building and other urban regeneration and tourism events in the Valley.
The bridge will provide a safe walking route for pedestrians to slightly alleviate the parking congestion currently experienced by the city and provide easy connection to pedestrians from the city centre to the valley. The bridge is primarily designed to be functional and practical. The Baakens River is also known for its 100-year flood line and so the bridge is designed to withstand the occasional flood. The agency is also considering the use of composite materials due to their strength and environmental and versatile characteristics. Construction on the bridge will take 10 to 12 months to complete. Members of the public are welcome to make their choice known by emailing create@mbda.co.za or visiting the MBDA’s Facebook page and taking part in the poll.
destroyed. DAFF has rescinded the export certification of foodstuffs implicated in the outbreak. . Imported meat and all imported products of animal origin are monitored and inspected as per existing procedures by DAFF officials for the presence of recognised pathogens, including Listeria monocytogenes. However, additional testing by Port Health officials (under DoH), which was implemented as part of investigations to determine the source of the outbreak, has ceased. Locally, provincial Departments of Agriculture are also conducting inspections at abattoirs. . Environmental Health Services at district level are being strengthened through the provision of intensive training in the assessment of food safety at production facilities and appropriate specimen collection procedures for food and environmental swabs. Training commenced in Gauteng Province on May 10. . National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) food testing capacity has been strengthened through the employment of additional human resources, equipment and updat-
ed standard operating procedures. Specimen collection procedures have been refined. “All the above activities are being implemented according to an emergency response plan (summary available at www.nicd.ac.za) and coordinated through the activities of a multisectoral incident management team supported by the WHO and funded through the Department of Health, the WHO and the National Institute for Communicable Diseases,” the statement said.

New business venture for New Brighton school kids REPORTER A PROGRAMME designed to help pupils become budding entrepreneurs has had such an impact on New Brighton’s Charles Duna Primary School that it has led to a school-based jewellery making business. Twenty-five Grade 2 to 6 pupils have been hard at work making beaded bracelets, necklaces and other products through their new business venture, called Kingdom Kids. They will be selling their wares at the Locally Yours handmade market at Port Elizabeth’s Tramways Building on Sunday. The Kingdom Kids children form part of a group of more than 80 learners at the school, who are participating in the community outreach arm of the national Young Entrepreneurs (YE) programme, which teaches young-

sters how to run their own small businesses and manage money. Charles Duna principal Nombulelo Sume said, while 80% of the parents at the school are unemployed, the YE programme is giving children the tools to create their own jobs, to break the cycle of poverty many families face. “We are teaching our pupils not to wait for employment but to create their own employment. We are planting a seed that even while they are at school, they can create your own businesses,” Sume said. YE facilitator Nomawethu Zenzile, who came up with the Kingdom Kids concept, said she hoped the children would grow into fullyfledged entrepreneurs and share their skills with others. “My hope is that they teach other kids that they become teachers as well as entrepreneurs and make an impact on their community,” Zenzile said. The 30-week YE programme runs at Charles Duna for an hour a week and Kingdom Kids is an extension of that, running for an additional hour a week. Locally Yours coordinator Annelize Botha said they are thrilled that the heart of their market will be entrepreneurs who are all under the age of 13. “My feeling is that the Kingdom Kids programme is not about learning a skill but rather about creating a habit for life. “Quite a few of our members have also volunteered to mentor these children in terms of learning new crafting and cooking skills, so, I think this is just the beginning of a very exciting adventure,” Botha said. YE business owner Ansulene Prinsloo, who last year brought the YE programme to Nelson Mandela Bay and several other Eastern Cape towns, said their vision is that Kingdom Kids will become a self-sustainable business. “With the money the kids make from the market, they will be able to buy more raw materials, make more products and grow their businesses. In this process, they are not only learning vital skills and knowledge but earning some income for themselves and their

ADVERTORIAL: THE CO-OP MICA
Conquer the cold this year with new winter wear WITH the June holidays almost upon us and the sun setting quite a bit earlier that just a month ago, it has become clear that the countdown to full-blown winter weather has started. Early morning temperatures have already started plummeting and reports of snow in the Eastern Cape have surfaced, further confirming the approach of the winter season. People have most likely started reorganising their closets, as tradition demands, to move their warmer garments back to the front and put their summer favourites on hold for December. Now is also probably the best time to replenish your supply of winter garments in
preparation for the harsh weather ahead. Don’t be fooled by the sunshine and tame temperatures we still see most days – the weather in South Africa, and especially in Nelson Mandela Bay, has been known to turn on a dime. Don’t let the change catch you off guard and unprepared. Ma Kholeka passionate about education of children NWABISA FUNDE KHOLEKA Mbusi, affectionately known as Ma Kholeka, is passionate about the early development of children before they take on the ropes of primary school. “I believe it is an important factor to unlock the ability of a child to read and learn at an early age,” said Ma Kholeka, who is the principal of Khazimla Day Care Centre. The day-care centre, which is situated in

Red Location, New Brighton, is run by Ma Kholeka, together with two practitioners. Ma Kholeka and her team take care of the day-to-day activities, such as athletics for the children, as well as the preparation of their meals. The Eastern Cape Department of Social Development provides food for the young children and payment for the practitioners though Ma Kholeka says the infrastructure of the school is starting to raise concern. “To have a learning environment that is
safe is one of my main priorities as the principal of the day care. It is unfortunate that in recent events the school has experienced a break-in where the electrical wires were stolen. “This is certainly a hazard for the children” said Ma Kholeka. Khazimla Day Care requires assistance to ensure that the time the children spend during the day is filled with joy and safety for the children. CHANTAL Moodaley, a Port Elizabethbased mother, recently launched her first children’s book. The book, titled Old Testament Stories, contains well-known Old Testament stories from the Bible. The beautifully illustrated book contains a section with morals from each story and a promise for the reader to make after finishing each chapter. Moodaley said the idea for the book was born more than five years ago. “What makes the book so special is that the illustrator is a 14-year-old boy named Daniel Padayachey. The cover of the book is made from a colourful collage of his drawings from the stories,” a visibly excited Moodaley said. She described how books for children of this quality were very expensive and only accessible through municipal libraries. “The aim was also to publish a book that was affordable, yet of the highest quality that would sell in any good bookshop.”
Chantal Moodaley is confident that her book will be appreciated by parents in communities ravaged by crime and gangsterism. PHOTO: SUPPLIED “This book is just one practical way of keeping our children out of harm’s way,” she said.
The book is available at R80. Interested readers or schools can email Chantal on biblestoriesforkidz@gmail.com

Local youth centre a lifeline for young boys THANDI SETOKOE CURRENTLY, home to more than 30 boys, aged between four and 21, the ACVV Khayalethu Youth Centre, a Christian organisation based in Kragga Kamma Road in Theescombe, is making a difference in the lives of many young boys. Established in 1996, after a definite need was identified for a permanent alternative for boys living on the street, Khayalethu, meaning “our home”, provides the boys living at the centre with the necessary tools needed to

prepare them physically, emotionally and intellectually to become responsible, functioning members of society. According to Khayalethu’s director, Dr Marietjie van der Merwe, the boys are placed at the centre through social workers, following a thorough selection process. “As soon as we have a vacancy at the centre we contact the social workers. What one needs to realise is that on the streets the boys build their own little families, they know where the soup kitchens are and nobody tells them what to do. So, for them, it’s not all negative, they survive,” Dr Van der Merwe said. She described how the best way to break the cycle was to get the boys off the streets as quickly as possible, adding that the shorter they stay on the streets the better. “Coming to the centre is a big change for them because they now have to accustom themselves to a different way of life – simple things like brushing their teeth, taking a bath and learning etiquette.” The children’s home has since expanded when the Khayalethu Oliver House was established in 2007 to accommodate the older boys and students from Khayalethu. Offering various programmes, this halfway house is aimed at equipping the boys with the skills and maturity they need for independent living and to become proud, confident workers, husbands and fathers. “According to government regulations, the boys must leave the youth centre either when they leave school or turn 18 years old. This presents enormous challenges for boys who are not yet fully equipped to re-enter society on their own which sometimes leads to the boys returning to the streets. “Hence, the development of Khayalethu Oliver House for the older boys,” Dr Van der Merwe explained. She described how, at Oliver House, the boys are given more freedom and responsibilities and more focus is placed on skills development and practical life lessons. The boys are also placed in work skills programmes with various local companies where they are absorbed into the workforce and earn practical traits as well as social

skills to equip them for the future. An old boy of Khayalethu, Nkosinathi Mangqangwana (28), who arrived at the centre at the age of nine said he would forever be grateful to Khayalethu for moulding him into the man he is today. “I honestly don’t know what would have become of me had I not been taken in at the centre. “I have learnt so many valuable life lessons and skills that I will carry with me wherever I go,” Mangqangwana said. Now, giving back to the centre by volunteering as a child care worker and gumboot dancing teacher, Mangqangwana described how they attended weekly prayer meetings and mentorship programmes which taught them the value of prayer and fellowship. “The men at the prayer sessions would offer us counselling which really helped a lot. I am now a Christian and have grown so much spiritually,” Mangqangwana added. Another success story is Thobela Meyane (22). He shared how when he arrived at the centre, he did not know a word of English but can now speak, read and understand it fully. “At Khayalethu I was given the opportunity
of getting an education and I was also enrolled into a bricklaying course,” Meyane said. The young man who arrived at the centre at the age of 14 now lives on his own and works at a local garage. Praising the leadership of Dr Van der Merwe he said, “Doc’s love and care for the boys is absolutely amazing. How she was able to put up with all of us is truly special,” Meyane added. Responding to where he sees himself in five years time, Meyane said he planned on furthering his studies and following his greatest passion, music. “I love singing and I’m hoping to become a gospel singer one day. I also want to work as a fisherman for a couple of years and during that time, I will be saving up money to buy a brickmaking machine, so, I can start my own business,” Meyane said. Khayalethu is only partly government subsidised and the Oliver House receives no government funding at all, making fundraising a vital key to the survival and success of the projects. The boys also volunteer in various community projects and are also involved in sporting activities.

TOURISM IN THE SPOTLIGHT: ALGOA GRAND PRIX INDOOR GO-KARTING
Exhilarating fun behind the wheel of a go-kart The PE Express visited Algoa Grand Prix Indoor Go-Karting at the Moffett on Main Lifestyle Centre last Thursday to experience first-hand what the hype was about. TANYA VAN ZYL and ZELDRÉ STRAUSS SWANEPOEL put their notebooks away and got behind the steering wheel of a 200cc go-kart. ON your marks . . . get set . . .GO! The light goes green and we’re off. At the first left turn I get stuck – I took the corner too quick. “Oh no! HELP!” I yelled, checking to see how far ahead my colleague Zeldré is. Now, I know it’s not a race – I did try to convince myself of this, but we are on a race track after all and I just can’t help it. After a push and a shove, I’m back on the track and I’m loving every second of it. I eventually caught up with Zeldré and lapped her . . . twice! But she cruised at her own speed at which she was comfortable in and I drove like a maniac, or at least that is what it felt like. Turns out I’m not a Lewis Hamilton and that my fastest lap time of 00:29:885 isn’t even close to that of the league leaders. But the adrenaline rush I felt while drifting around the corners and putting pedal to the metal made me feel like I was in an actual race – adrenaline heaven even. Algoa Grand Prix Indoor Go-Karting was opened by Tom Hugo and Peter Schultz one year ago. “It was a lot of hard work opening up this place. The whole idea was to let it look and feel like a race course. We really try to recreate a real racing experience for the people,” Hugo said. They even have a very accurate electronic lap count system, he added. They have 16 go-karts, of which four are junior cars (90cc). Children older than six
years can ride their own kart or if they are not comfortable driving on their own, they can ride with an adult in a double car. Children younger than six, who are not allowed to drive yet, can also ride in the double car with an adult. According to Hugo, paraplegic customers can also be accommodated with prior arrangement. “We have a mechanic who converts the regular kart to suit the paraplegic customer’s needs, but we need to be informed in advance,” he explained. They also cater for corporate functions and parties of all kinds, from birthday parties to

They are open from 10:00 to 22:00 from Tuesdays to Saturday and from 10:00 to 16:00 on Sundays. On Mondays they host league racing.

Young Pearsonite a lifesaving star
Kabega Primary receives new u/13 rugby jerseys
REPORTER DYLAN Fourie, a Grade 8 learner from Pearson High School, has taken his passion for swimming to the next level, and he now uses his well-honed talent for the sport of lifesaving.
Kabega Primary School’s staff and learners are very excited about their brand-new u/13 rugby jerseys. They are grateful to Louw Lochner Properties who recently sponsored the jerseys. Fourie began his foray into lifesaving at the age of 13, when he joined Summerstrand Lifesaving Club as a nipper. This year he has progressed to the juniors and is excelling at the sport. Responding to why he went from swimming in pools to lifesaving, Fourie said swimming laps was no longer a challenge to him. “One day I was at a function and I saw junior lifesavers training, so, I decided to go and try it for myself. I enjoyed it so much that I stayed,” he said. His love for the ocean was also a contributing factor in him pursuing the sport. His advice to youngsters who have wondered about the sport is to join a club and try it for themselves to see how good they are. Fourie competes in three disciplines: swimming, beach events and Malibu board. He was recently included in the Eastern Province lifesaving team that participated in the interprovincial competition earlier this month.

US opera to be performed in the Bay REPORTER THE Mandela University’s Music Department is proud to present Wading Home, an Opera of New Orleans, performed by students from the Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Nelson Mandela University’s Choral Ensemble and the Eastern Cape Children’s Choir, at the South Campus Auditorium on May 30. Wading Home is a short (split one act) opera about the story of one New Orleans family’s struggle to reunite both spiritually and physically after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. It is based on a novel by Dallasbased writer Rosalyn Story. Her novel, called Wading Home, a Nov-
el of New Orleans, was published in September 2010, and grew, in part, from her personal experience as a musician and her time volunteering with Habitat for Humanity in New Orleans after Katrina. A distinguished professor of music and voice at Southern Methodist University, Prof Barbara Hill Moore, producer and music director said almost three years ago they premiered this new opera, Wading Home, with performances in New Orleans and Dallas, commemorating the survivors of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, to wide critical acclaim. “Considering all the very sad issues with water throughout South Africa. I decided this would be the
ideal time for the Wading Home theme of overcoming the wrath of nature through community spirit, determination, working together and faith. “We have so much in common with our struggles with the damage and death involved with dealing with too much water and yours of dealing with not enough water,” she said. Entrance for this production is free and the event starts at 19:00. Free-will donations will benefit the Eastern Cape Children’s Choir and the Bruce Foote Memorial Scholarship Foundation, which assists South African students in voice study at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. I saw this powerful Shamsi on a TV programme. Before I had suffered for years and I tried many people for help but all failed. I could not believe it when he showed me my enemies in form of a dream and whatever they were doing to me. Every single detail he showed me about my enemies was so true. Shamsi accurately read my fortune and told me all my problems without me speaking a single word to him. Within 6 days after his prayers, my husband left his girlfriend and came back to me plus my enemies approached me and confessed the bad things they had done to me. Shamsi also gave me a special ring to fix my financial problems, and a love crystal that made people at home and at work to like me, listen to me and do whatever I want, without me even having to ask.
She also helps people with: • Financial Problems • Love Relationship • Work Crises • Family Problems • Bad Luck Health Problems • and many more...

Can Ferrari fight back in Monaco? Grand Prix, was rumoured to have aided Mercedes more than it did Ferrari, that specific compound has only been earmarked for three races on the calendar. The Monaco Grand Prix and the Anthony Noghes circuit is not one of them. Instead, along with the ultra and supersoft compound, this weekend will see the first introduction of pink side-walled hypersoft tyre. “Monaco is a lot about mechanical grip, so, a softer tyre will give a big advantage in terms of lap time, said Pirelli racing manager, Mario Isola. “I have a good expectation that we will have a lap record. Traditionally, Mercedes has struggled to get the softer range of compounds working effectively. Case in point being Lewis Hamilton’s failure to advance to the top 10 of qualifying for the 2017 race, which he started from 13th on the grid. But it’s a new season and Mercedes will have worked hard to understand and overcome their tyre conundrum. Given the drubbing they received in Spain, it is imperative that Ferrari maximises any and all advantages they may have this weekend. Despite only being
Mahle Old Grey retain top position FRANCOIS J ROTHNER MAHLE Old Grey retained top of the log spot in the PELFA Old Buck Gin League, despite suffering a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Fairview Rovers on their home turf. It was a very close game and when half-time arrived, neither side had scored. Fairview Rovers’ pressure eventually paid off when Sharief Mamoojee scored their winner 10 minutes into the second half. Meanwhile, not only did Central Acemates beat Callies 2-0, but they also displaced Callies in second place on the log. Acemates netted their first goal 15 minutes into the first half from a free kick by Malibongwe Sobikwa. Kwanele Mkolo then scored their second goal three minutes before half-time to ensure an upset win. Kuyga Masters are slowly climbing up the log and are now lying fourth after a solid 2-0 victory over PE City at Victoria Park Sports Club. Andile Singaphi scored 18 minutes into the first half and Bandile Mata netted midway through the second half. African Leopards gave Priory a 6-2 hiding on the Oval. Leopards went 2-0 up at half-time thanks to goals from Sipho Solomon and Tabo Simane.
The second half saw the floodgates open with Simane, Andile McClean, Luthando Yibe and Lukhanyo Dlula scoring for Leopards. Oliver Kleinbooi and Rory Mortimer scored two consolation goals for Priory in the second half. NMB Municipality got their second win of the season when they overcame St Albans 2-1. Khonza Buzile scored for St Albans in the first half. However, Shawn Sokiya equlised for Municipality a few minutes later and Ndyebo Madolo sealed the game for Municipality nine minutes before the half-time whistle. Westpark and Shamrocks played out a 2-2 draw. Kumarin Naidoo and Levendrin Norman had the Rocks 2-0 up in the first half. Rezahn Jordaan pulled a goal back for Westpark midway through the first half and Mike Frosler equalised for Westpark five minutes before the final whistle. five races into the season, Kimi Raikkonen has already suffered two retirements. While rumours are making the rounds that Ferrari want to re-sign the Finn for 2019, Raikkonen will be keen to repeat his stunning pole position from 2017. Barring unreliability, he may yet be a good bet for a stellar weekend. And while Red Bull’s mysterious lack of pace in Spain was peculiar, they will almost certainly be a threat in Monaco. The high downforce demands of the circuit will reward a good aerodynamic package which Red Bull seem to have this year. The feeling is that Daniel Ricciardo is the more likely of the two Red Bull drivers to shine around Monaco, as he has done in the past. It remains to be seen whether Max Verstappen can temper his exuberance to keep his car out of the walls long enough to beat his Aussie teammate. Statistics and previous form suggests that Ferrari will be the team to beat this weekend and despite the fact, Formula 1 remains one of the most unpredictable sports in the world, the Scuderia wouldn’t be a bad bet.

FOR several decades Formula 1 has, among other descriptors, been one synonymous with glamour. It’s especially true this weekend as the paddock heads to the French Riviera for the Monaco Grand Prix, which is the veritable jewel in F1’s crown. The combination of ferociously fast F1 cars and the tight barrier-lined streets of Monte Carlo is a sight and feat to behold. At 3.3km in length, the streets of Monaco are not conducive to much overtaking. This makes qualifying a vital component to a successful weekend. Equally important is stringing together the best lap possible, which often consists of skimming the barriers. However, it’s a fine line between shaving the Armco and ending up in the barrier. With the margin of error so minute, it’s imperative that drivers maintain concentration throughout every lap they complete of the circuit. While Mercedes’ form and pace were untouchable in Spain, they may struggle on the Monaco streets by Toto Wolff’s own admission. While Pirelli’s change to the tread, on grounds of safety, ahead of the Spanish
corner. The scoreboard read 50-10 after Dingaan converted Dyesi’s try. Left wing Cingile Booi scored Buds’ last try which decreased their deficit to 50-15. The man of the match, Nameka, scored his last try which gave Motherwell RFC a 57-15 victory following a conversion by Dingaan.

Mamie, as Motherwell RFC are affectionately known to their loyal supporters, started the game like a house on fire as they did not give the visitors any chance to breathe. Mamie front ranker, Lelethu “Beast Nameka, scored the opening try which made the score line 5-0. The hosts increased their lead to 10-0, following a beautiful try which was scored by their right wing, Sithembele Yako. Mamie continued to search for their third try, which came courtesy of the loose forward, Mzukisi Tembani, but Yako failed to convert the try with the home side leading 15-0. Mamie continued to put pressure on the Alicedale side, with Masi “Bukhosi Pienaar scoring a try, which was converted by Kirsten Dingaan, to give the home side a 22-0 lead. The visiting team flanker, Erwin Jacobs, scored his side’s opening try that fly half Elgin Buys failed to convert with

Teams lose valuable points in relegation battle SELBY MADIKANE WITH the SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) SAB Regional League nearing the end of the season, a few teams lost valuable league points on Saturday in their bid to avoid relegation to their respective local football association (LFA). Mabayibone Strikers failed to claim three league points, in their bid to avoid relegation, after they shared a 1-1 draw with Ikamva Movers in Walmer Town-
ship. Strikers are currently at the bottom of the league table. Young Killers, who are also near the bottom of the log, went down 2-1 to Fairview Rovers at Jabavu Stadium. Golden Aces kept their hopes of campaigning in the SAFA NMB SAB Regional League alive, after they had claimed a well-deserved 3-1 victory against home team Morning Stars at Zwide Stadium. Roaring Tigers succumbed 2-0 to Despatch Pioneers at Chevrolet Stadium, while Motherwell Academy edged out
Fairview Rovers 1-0 in their hotly contested clash at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium. PE Sundowns shared a 3-3 draw with Young Ideas at Chevrolet Stadium and FC Winners gave their best performance of the season after they drubbed Hearts 3-0 at Mawabo Dyubhele Stadium in KwaDwesi. Finally, Motherwell Academy registered an emphatic 3-0 victory over Ikamva Movers. Camper United played to a goalless draw against Young Ideas in their Motherwell derby.
