‘PE Express’ staff treat senior citizens for Mother’s Day Editorial staff of PE Express spent time with residents of Buffelsfontein Retirement Village on Thursday last week, as part of a CSI outreach to bring them treats ahead of Mother’s Day. On the menu were exquisitely decorated cupcakes, magazines, books and playtime with therapy dogs from the Algoa Bay German Shepherd Club. New R1 billion Aspen facility set to create 240 jobs REPORTER THE Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Rob Davies, officially launched the R1 billion Aspen Pharmaceuticals high containment facility, which will see the creation of an additional 240 jobs on the site, in Port Elizabeth on May 7. Speaking at the launch, Davies said that it was a significant investment which is taking South Africa into a new level of manufacturing space and creating the necessary jobs that South Africa needs in the manufacturing sector. “If we look at the pharmaceutical industry, South Africa’s population is the largest consumer of pharmaceutical products. When we look at some of these statistics, I think we can see that there are huge challenges in that we have a huge trade deficit of around R20 billion. “This means we import R20 billion more of pharmaceutical products than we export,” said Davies. He added that the contribution of manufacturing in the pharmaceutical sector is about 0.48% of the GDP, which plays a small part in the economy and employs about 9 600 people. “I think when we look at the manufacturing value chains in the world, South Africa will be better off if we are involved in the productions of value added products, even if it is just basic manufacturing rather than simply importing.” Davies congratulated Aspen for investing in South Africa and being part of the investment story. He said the company has become

a multinational player that continues to retain its roots in South Africa and uses its global presence to constantly deepen its manufacturing capacity in the country. Aspen Group chief executive, Stephen Saad, said, “We are pleased that over 90% of the jobs that will be created in the new facility will be local jobs, mostly drawn from surrounding communities, such as New Brighton Township. These employees go on to become world-class, highly skilled people that can hold their own anywhere and in most facilities, globally.” The metro welcomed Aspen Pharmaceuticals’ mega investment as it reaffirmed the city’s status as a strategic and preferred investment destination. According to Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Athol Trollip, Aspen’s latest R1 billion fixed asset investment further shows the company’s confidence in the city’s future growth potential and this will importantly bolster job creation and further enhance the company’s export potential. “There is also a strong indication that the company is looking into relocating some of its offshore manufacturing institutions to Nelson Mandela Bay to consolidate its operations in the metro.” Saad indicated that this recent investment is just a start of things to come. “This would essentially reinforce his company’s presence in the metro and enable this pharmaceutical giant to become an employer of choice - the biggest in the metro,” Trollip said. In its operations in the Eastern Cape, Aspen currently employs over 2 500 people, of which

At full capacity, the new high containment plant will produce approximately 3.6 billion tablets annually and package some three million bottles per month. “We must also pay tribute to Davies, for the

seminal role he has played in encouraging and facilitating this massive investment. The presence of both Davis and MEC for Finance Sakhumzi Somyo also highlighted the importance of good collaborative intergovernmental relations when it comes to attracting and securing investments of this magnitude,” Trollip said.

Ebrahiem Abrahams, Wings Motorcycle Club chairman, said the Blikkies Run, now in its fourth year, is gaining momentum. “We would like to see even more bikers and members from the public support the initiative next year. “The POPS Foundation does impeccable work in the community and if we can help save one family from starvation, it means our humble contribution has made an impact.” The Swartkops Community Police Forum, the South African Police Services and Nelson Mandela Bay Fire Brigade were also present and informed the children about the work they carry out in the community. Abrahams said in addition to the support they received from the police and fire department, small businesses and community members have this year contributed generously towards the cause. “We were able to feed all the kids with breakfast, lunch, snacks and ice-cream and give each child a gift and party pack to take home.”

Bikers and members of the public paid an entry fee of canned food to enter the venue, where close to 100 underprivileged kids from children’s homes were entertained. Beneficiary of the tinned food, the POPS (People Opposing Poverty in Society) Foundation, said this initiative would enable them to support many more households this year. Speaking at the event, Xenny Brown, spokesperson for the POPS Foundation, expressed his gratitude towards the biking fraternity for their contribution towards feeding the needy. He said he has witnessed over the years how bikers unselfishly open their hearts. “These bikers have big hearts. The canned food that are collected at Blikkies Run every year help us to reach many impoverished households,” he added. The POPS Foundation is volunteer-based and distribute more than 60 000 meals every month in Nelson Mandela Bay. The organisation is currently busy with its annual winter drive The organisation is active in Motherwell, Zwide, Swartkops, Chatty extension, Bethelsdorp extension, Timothy Valley, Windvogel, Algoa Park, Helenvale, Gelvandale, Greenbushes, Lorraine, Korsten, Schauderville and Walmer Township. “We support families, day care centres, children’s homes, the homeless and soup kitchens. “This project will assist in bringing relief to the underprivileged families living in informal settlements and other impoverished communities,” said Brown. In addition to meal distribution the organisation also reach out to the communities with

Donation drives animal sterilisations REPORTER A DONATION of over R17 000 to Animal Welfare Society Port Elizabeth (AWS PE) will through spaying or neutering, enable them to lower shelter intake numbers and prevent animal cruelty and neglect. The donation from Mastertons Coffee and Tea Specialists, was collected through sales of hessian coffee bags and is credited to the support received from coffee lovers across Nelson Mandela Bay who purchase hessian bags from the coffee roastery. Green coffee beans are transported in these hessian bags from coffee growing countries around the world and can be reused for various purposes due to their sturdy nature. “Many pets from disadvantaged backgrounds will benefit from the donation,” said AWS PE Fundraiser Cynthea van Rhijn.

AWS PE runs a biweekly clinic in Walmer Township that assists with primary health care and assessing animals that need sterilisation. Pets that need to be sterilised are booked in to be operated on by the AWS PE veterinarian. Mastertons company director, Ryler Masterton, assisted AWS PE’s fieldworkers at a recent clinic and

befriended local Walmer Township resident, Trevor Hoyi. Hoyi’s dogs will benefit from the Mastertons donation and have been selected to be sterilised by AWS PE. “We are pleased to be able to assist and we are positive the donation will help AWS PE to continue offering these vital services in the community,” Masterton said.

Young artist launches solo career

Golf club to host festival

REPORTER

REPORTER

NTLANTLA Swana, a 22-year-old BMUS (music technology) student at Nelson Mandela University, will be introducing herself as a solo artist during her debut show at The Barn, PE Opera House, on May 23 from 18:00. Swana is originally from East London and started singing when she was only seven years old. “My vision is to positively impact on the Eastern Cape music industry and the country as a whole. “The need for vibrant young visionaries in the industry has been identified and I wish to fill that gap,” she said. After a varied music career, she recently joined the popular a capella

group, Legato, as their new lead singer. During the show on May 23, she will be working with the likes of the legendary Lawrence Matshiza and Mthokozisi Mabuza. The concept of the concert is “Stepping Stone”. “A stepping stone is an action or event that helps one to make progress towards a specified goal. “Now, I have found this fit for my first ever solo concert as there is a bigger goal in mind, which this concert works towards achieving,” Swana said. The concert will be a mix of jazz and afro soul music, with a couple of contemporary gospel songs. Tickets to the show are R100 per person. For more info contact Unathi on 076 943 9456.

THE organisers of the annual Humewood Golf Festival are planning to introduce an added element of fun when golfers tee off at the famous links course in Port Elizabeth from May 27 to June 2.

Spectacular awards to honour gospel stars REPORTER THE first annual Gabriel Global Gospel Awards will roll out the red carpet in Nelson Mandela Bay, on May 26 for an uplifting celebration to recognise, appreciate and honour many talented artists in the gospel industry. CEO Jason Gabriel said, “As a former Gospel Weekend Breakfast Show presenter and 2018 Liberty Radio Awards finalist for best community weekend show in the country, I had the privilege to cross paths with a hub of talent in the Bay.

“In line with excellence, I was inspired to create a platform to expose and appreciate such great talent.” The awards have attracted a sea of nominations for artists who have made a significant impact in the lives of people through their commitment and dedication in providing a positive and spiritual message to the community. Among the gospel greats, 79 celebrated gospel stars across 14 categories were spotlighted with the most number of nominations to escalate into the finals. Gabriel said, “Thus far, we have

received over 15 000 votes from the community in support of our finalists. An incentive of R10 000 cash will be rewarded to the nominee who received the most number of votes across all categories.” The glamorous red carpet event will be graced with moving performances from some of the nominees and by one of South Africa’s funniest comedians, Boeta B. The event will be held at the Feather Market Hall on May 26 at 18:00. Tickets are R200 per person. For more info contact Jason Gabriel on 076 624 7230.

Presenting the Whack, Waggle and Win Festival, sponsored by Jaguar Land Rover Eastern Cape, the idea is to ensure the golfers have a memorable time as they plot their way around one of the few true links courses in the country. Club manager Brendon Timm said they wanted to add some fresh elements this year to promote the festive nature of the week. “Over the past 17 years we have always held a festival of golf at Humewood, but this year we have decided to change things up and bring the public an event that is more festive,” he said. “Players are encouraged to enjoy not just one day of golf, but hopefully to come back and enjoy some more rounds during the week. We will have a gin tent, food trucks

and lots more.” He added that Jaguar Land Rover played a critical role in the club’s ability to deliver a top-quality series of competitions over the seven days. “They have been great supporters of Humewood Golf Club over the years and we feel that both parties have benefited from this relationship,” Timm said. “Last year we saw just under 1 000 players over the seven days and we believe with our new look and feel we can definitely expect at least a 10% increase in numbers.” Besides a Fitch and Leeds gin bar during the week, there will be live music on offer and a quality range of prizes for each of the days. Timm said that companies or individuals interested in gaining exposure at the festival should contact Lara McLoughlin on 076 610 6407 or lara@lprmanagement.co.za. Rounds will be charged at R170 per person and bookings can be done through the pro shop at 041 583 2137 or bookings@humewoodgolf.co.za.

PE EXPRESS | WEDNESDAY 16 MAY 2018

Vistarus to challenge cyclists, fun runners REPORTER DIEHARD cycling fans, families and anyone looking to have a relaxing Saturday can gather at the Vistarus Mission Station in Sydenham on Saturday when they host two exciting and challenging events. Vistarus Mission Station was founded in 1998 by Kobus and Lynette Jacobs and provides shelter to homeless and needy families, restoring their dignity by empowering them with life skills and creating job opportunities for them. The centre also incorporates a recycling programme, a plastic extrusion plant and a woodwork centre. They will be hosting the events for the second time this year in an effort to remind people who and where they are and what

they do. Residents who own a bicycle and consider themselves up to the challenge are invited to participate in the 150km Cycle Challenge that will set off at 06:00. It is a challenging race for beginners and will include part of the Ironman route. Registration will start at 05:00. Those who don’t feel up to the task can also participate in the 5km fun run which will take place from 08:00. Families are welcome to join in the fun as there will be jumping castles, face painting and hotdog sales, as well as an open-air movie later that evening. All are welcome. Entry to both races is simply a donation made to the centre. Both events will start and end at the Vistarus Mission Station. For more info contact 041 484 1106.

SPECIAL THANKS TO DR SIMBA My name is Lizelle , 46 years old from Graaf Reinet. Thank you Dr Simba for helping my family. My son was a drug and alcohol addict for years and I tried a lot of healers and prophets but all failed until I saw Dr Simba's advert in the newspaper. He came to our houseand performed his spiritual prayer which chased away all evils and demons that have been destroying my family into drugs and poverty. Prof Kula used his magic rats and short boys to bring money into our house, the same night. He helped us a lot, to pay our debts, bond, kids school fees. With his powerful miracles he prayed for us and our marriage is better now, everything is peaceful. All thanks to Dr Simba Nani Please dont waste time, contact him with all your problems. I saw this powerful Shamsi on a TV programme. Before I had suffered for years and I tried many people for help but all failed. I could not believe it when he showed me my enemies in form of a dream and whatever they were doing to me. Every single detail he showed me about my enemies was so true. Shamsi accurately read my fortune and told me all my problems without me speaking a single word to him. Within 6 days after his prayers, my husband left his girlfriend and came back to me plus my enemies approached me and confessed the bad things they had done to me. Shamsi also gave me a special ring to fix my financial problems, and a love crystal that made people at home and at work to like me, listen to me and do whatever I want, without me even having to ask.

She also helps people with: • Financial Problems • Love Relationship • Work Crises • Family Problems • Bad Luck Health Problems • and many more...

Shining Stars take the lead SELBY MADIKANE SHOWVILLAGE United Brothers hit a bad patch when they failed to win their two recent games in their bid to cement their position on top of the Motherwell Football Association (MOFA) Premier League log table at the weekend.

Young Tigers drew 1-1 with Valencia, while Crystal Palace succumbed 2-0 to SUBS. The struggling Wells United suffered a 2-0 defeat to Young Madrid. Manchester United devastated Real Aces 4-1 at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium. Real Strikers played their hearts out

despite their 3-2 defeat to Manchester FC in their tough game. Tomorrow Stars accumulated three league points following their 3-2 victory over City Rangers. Royal Bucks handed a 2-0 defeat to Highland Spurs. < Young Ideas’ defender, Luvo Vusani, tackles Showvillage midfielder, Simphiwe Yako, during their MOFA Premier League match on Saturday. The teams shared a goalless draw.

Stallions, as Showvillage are also known, earned a point when they shared a goalless draw with Young Ideas on Saturday. Ideas could have wrapped the game at 2-0, but wing Sikhumbuzo Ntshebe failed to score twice. Had it not been for Showvillage’s goalkeeper, Monwabisi Gwenta, pulling off some brilliant saves during oneon-one situations, Stallions could have been punished. Showvillage’s supporters looked dejected when they saw their side go down 2-0 to FC Angels. As things stand, Shining Stars are the new log leaders after they defeated Happy Stars 3-0 at Motherwell NU 11 Stadium on Sunday.

Morning Stars collect six points SELBY MADIKANE WITH only a few games left in the Walmer Football Association (WAFA) Premier League, Morning Stars went home holding their heads high after they collected six maximum league points in their double header at the weekend. Stars showed what they were

made of when they defeated the high-riding Young Aces 2-1 in their game on Saturday. In their second game on Sunday, Stars defeated Two For Joy 2-0 at Walmer Community Grounds. In another game, the league title chasers, Golden Heroes, embarrassed Eleven Experience 10-0 as well. Unfortunately, Heroes went down 1-0 to Ghetto Stars in their

second game. Airport Valley United played to a 2-2 draw when they locked horns with hammers on Saturday. Real Madrid drubbed Walmer Hotspurs 3-0 while Manchester United hammered Airport Valley City 4-0 in a one-sided game. Mabayibone Strikers, who are on the brink of being demoted to the WAFA Lower League, had a bye.

TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE

Hamilton cruises to victory in Spain IT was vintage Lewis Hamilton as he obliterated the field to win the Spanish F1 Grand Prix from Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas while Red Bull’s Max Verstappen snapped up his first podium of the 2018 season. But no sooner did the race get underway than it ended in a shower of carbon fibre. In an attempt to avoid hitting teammate Kevin Magnussen, Haas F1’s Romain Grosjean ran wide in turn four. The Frenchman decided to keep his foot on the throttle, which spun him across the circuit in a plume of smoke. Nico Hulkenberg, and Pierre Gasly were unable to avoid the spinning Haas and sustained significant suspension damage. The race resumed several laps later with Hamilton well in control from Sebastian Vettel and Bottas in third. Seemingly at will, the race leader was able to build a gap of eight seconds over Vettel and likely had more pace in hand should he have needed it. Ferrari gambled first with an early pitstop for Vettel on lap 18 and fitting the

medium compound tyres. Mercedes responded by calling Bottas in a lap later but the Finn remained behind the Ferrari as he exited the pits. Ferrari was forced to end Kimi Raikkonen’s race early with a suspected engine issue. Raikkonen had been forced to take a second power unit earlier in the weekend, which will be a worry to Ferrari as all drivers are allotted only three power units for the entire season. The race continued with Hamilton making his stop on lap 25, which promoted Max Verstappen, yet to stop, into the lead of the race. Verstappen’s eventual pit stop gave Hamilton back the lead of the race with Vettel roughly 10 seconds adrift. No sooner would the race begin to settle than Esteban Ocon’s Force India came to a halt, prompting the Virtual Safety Car. Ferrari, not wanting to take a risk on tyre life, called Vettel into the pits. However, a slow stop saw Vettel rejoin behind Bottas and Verstappen. By now Verstappen had bizarrely run into the back of Williams’ Lance

Golden Brothers remain first SELBY MADIKANE DESPITE their 1-0 loss to their neighbours, Young Professionals, Golden Brothers, managed to maintain their position on top of ZAFA OPEC Premier League log table. Golden Brothers gave a good account of themselves in their second game of the weekend against the more experienced Young Professionals side. The log leaders dug dig deep to overcome Young Neighbours 3-2 and keep their hopes of winning the league alive. United Comrades also won both of their

Stroll and lost the end-plate on his front-wing. However, the damage didn’t prove critical and he stayed out on track. Vettel appeared to have a better pace at times but never got close enough to attempt an overtake on the Dutchman. On a day where Mercedes’ pace was untouchable Sebastian Vettel finished only fourth after having been forced into a two stop strategy. Ferrari’s sudden inability to eke out tyre life will raise some contentious questions in the paddock. After all, Pirelli, for the Spanish GP, had altered the tread depth of the tyres due in part to Mercedes issues of blistering in pre-season testing around the circuit de Catalunya. Despite promising much in Friday running Red Bull never threatened in the race. While Verstappen claimed the final step on the podium Daniel Ricciardo finished fifth. While Grosjean was given a three-place grid penalty for causing the first lap shunt his Haas teammate, Magnussen came home in a lonely, but solid, sixth.

Local favourites Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso were seventh and eighth while Charles LeClerc and Sergio Perez rounded out the top 10. Mercedes’ one-two today gives them the lead in the constructor’s standings and Hamilton extends his lead in the driver’s standings to 17 points over Vettel, heading to the Monaco Grand Prix in Monte Carlo in two weeks’ time.
