Ndlovu Youth Choir serenades Bay crowd The Ndlovu Youth Choir visited Port Elizabeth last week with a surprise performance at the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber’s annual gala evening. The ‘America’s Got Talent’ runners-up have once again flown SA’s flag high, when they recently scooped an international accolade at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards in the US. The Limpopo-based choir won the Best Independent Music Video for their Zulu version of Ed Sheeran’s ‘Shape of You’. The group will soon release their latest album. GELVANDALE: UNAVAILABLE FUNDS AND POOR MAINTENANCE
Stadium falls into disrepair KAILIN DANIELS
A
FTER being opened only nine years ago in March 2010, the Gelvandale Stadium has since been left to deteriorate due to the unavailability of funds and poor maintenance.
This comes as R9 million, meant to fix structural defects and water leaks, has not been allocated from the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) to maintain the stadium since the 2017/2018 financial year. The stadium, which was a training field for teams participating in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, is
now a pale shadow of its former self, with much repair work needed to be done. This includes an extension of the existing pavilion roof, sections where the seats are either missing or broken, painting of the internal walls, water leaks and roof damages. That’s despite ongoing pushes
by the ward 10 councillor, Andy Jordan, to get the NMBM to provide the funds. “A total of R9 million was allocated on my ward budget during the 2017/2018 financial year to provide maintenance for the Gelvandale Stadium. “However, I have not received a cent from the municipality for

of R6 million. In the 2018/19 financial year, an amount of R9 million was allocated for the Gelvandale Stadium’s roof structure. “The defects as a result of the open roof will only be properly addressed when the existing roof is replaced,” Baron said, adding that a consultant had been appointed for the planning of the roof maintenance. The contract was later extended for the planning consultants to be main consultants for the roof construction. However, this appointment and extension was not approved by the Bid Adjudication Committee (BAC). Baron explained, “The decision of the BAC came towards the latter part of the 2018/19 financial year and there was insufficient time to then embark on a new tendering process for this project.” This resulted in the funds not being rolled over due to the contractual commitment which was not finalised by the end of the 2018/19 financial year. Regardless of the lack of maintenance, various local artists performed at the Be The Change 2019 festival, which took place at the stadium last weekend. Jordan said that if the stadium was not properly fixed, he feared
ASKED if there were funds allocated for this financial year to maintain the stadium, municipal spokesperson, Kupido Baron, said the stadium was maintained from the maintenance budget of the Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture directorate. The following maintenance works, according to Baron, have been undertaken at the stadium thus far: . Painting of all the internal walls; . All locks have been replaced; . Replacement of all damaged ceiling boards, light fittings plugs and faulty electrical equipment; . Flood lights; . Various plumbing repairs. However, during PE Express’s visit to the stadium, it was found that much of the equipment, the toilets, internal walls and the structure itself, were in a poor state. Baron said the budget allocated in the 2017/18 financial year for the Gelvandale Stadium was for the hockey field. “The project entailed the development of the Astroturf surface which was completed with a budget allocation

someone might get injured. However, Baron said that the sound systems at the stadium were in perfect condition and the facility could be used.

Port of PE second in security excellence nationally REPORTER IMPROVING on their previously held third position, Transnet National Ports Authority’s Port of PE achieved second place, among all eight South African ports, in maintaining compliance with the ISPS Code, at the Department of Transport’s sixth annual Maritime Security Indaba, which took place on November 18. The International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code is an essential maritime regulation for the safety and security of ships, ports, cargo and crew. It ensures that preventative measures can be taken in the event that a threat is determined. The assessment and review of the port security plan becomes an essential and integral part of developing, updating and implementing the plan. The Port of PE has thus been recognised for the on-going security improvements it has made through this plan, especially taking into account the future vision of becoming a “Smart People’s Port”. Nelson Masophi, port security manager at the Port of PE, said, “We are very proud, not only of the Port of PE’s security team, but also of all the government agencies, shipping companies, terminal operators and seafarers who have played an integral part in ensuring that the Port of PE upholds the implementation of the ISPS Code certification, putting the safety and security of all those that enter the port in the forefront. “It is truly the result of continuous hard work and commitment that we, as a team, were able to achieve this.” Rajesh Dana, port manager at the Port of PE, added, “The ISPS Code second position achieved reiterates the principle that safety and security is all
of our responsibility. So I not only commend the hard work that our TNPA port security team has achieved, but also the entire port community. This achievement is further testament to ensuring zero harm to our employees, customers, stakeholders and visitors. “We are further pleased that we can assure our local and international visitors, as well as the people of Nelson Mandela Bay, that when they visit the Port of PE, they visit a safe and secure environment which prides itself on providing access to all port stakeholders, without compromise to their wellbeing,” he said.
The Port of PE is a top performer regarding security in South Africa’s national ports system.

All systems go for Summer Nathi Festival REPORTER THE SPAR Summer Nathi Festival is back this year, kicking off on December 16, with various activities for all to enjoy. Starting with the opening of the season at Hobie Beach on December 16, the programme will end with the traditional blockbuster New Year’s parties at Wells Estate and Hobie Beach on December 31. Picnics, musical shows and various fun activities will be on offer, with artists such as Lady Zamar, DJ Maphorisa, LKG, Kabza de Small and Simmy, as well as various local acts, lined up to entertain the community. Seki Mandaba, acting executive director of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s (NMBM) sport, recreation, arts and culture portfolio, said it was important to keep the creative industry in motion. “Our programme is spread across the metro, from Port Elizabeth right through to Uitenhage, with sponsored and various other events in the city,” Mandaba said. The other events in the Summer Nathi programme include a Christmas Picnic in the Park
at Happy Valley on December 22, and the Uitenhage Picnic at the Willow Dam on December 23. Metro safety and security executive director, Keith Meyer, said those attending should enjoy themselves responsibly. Meyer added, “The influx of visitors to the city’s various tourist attractions leads to a dramatic rise in vehicle and pedestrian traffic. With businesses closing and the high levels of alcohol associated with the festive season, the safety and security directorate has intensified its strategies. “We will have a zero-tolerance policy on any misdemeanours.” SPAR sponsorship and events manager, Alan Stapleton, urged the organisers to reinforce a message about protecting the environment. “Summer Nathi is all about bringing people together and celebrating the beauty of our city and the beauty of our people. “One really big request we have is to use this programme to keep talking about the STOP Plastic campaign and to keep PE clean. Through Summer Nathi, we can embrace change, embrace diversity and embrace good values,” Stapleton said.

Fifth baby drop safe opened in the Bay KAILIN DANIELS AN abandoned baby found dumped in a storm water drain in April last year, led to the opening of the fifth baby drop safe in Port Elizabeth. The baby drop safe, installed at the Missionvale Care Centre, has been opened in an attempt to end the scourge of babies being dumped in bins, toilets and open fields in Port Elizabeth over the past few years. Charmaine Keevy, founder of Celebration of Grace Project, discovered an abandoned baby when out walking her dog in April last year. Since then, she has worked tirelessly with individuals and organisations to provide a safe alternative for mothers in crisis who may resort to leaving their new born babies in vulnerable situations. Keevy said that the need to create an alternative safe place for mothers to place their babies instead of abandoning them, was birthed the moment she found baby Grace. “That day became a defining moment in my life. I could not turn away and asked myself if I was chosen to find her. In that moment of holding her cold little body, I knew I could not walk away,” Keevy said. Once a baby is placed in the baby safe and the safe is closed, it cannot be opened from the outside. The safe, which has a weight function, triggers a sensor to alert the Missionvale Care Centre, where someone immediately responds. The baby safe is located at the Missionvale Care Centre and is a collaboration between newly formed NGO, Celebration of Grace Project, and the ABC Private Safety Care. Sue Atherton, staff liaison officer at Grey High School, organised a successful fund-raiser to cover the cost of purchasing the safe from Baby Safe International. Working with Kim Taljaard, from the ABC Private Safety Care, Missionvale Care Centre approached them to host a baby safe at the cen-

Day care centre keeps elderly active
PE Express
Malabar chairperson bids farewell REPORTER
RAZAAN PLAATJIES SENIOR citizens in the Bay can join their peers at special day care centres created for the elderly, where they can enjoy daily programmes to keep them active and independent.

cer player, says it is best for older people to live with their families, while they are kept busy at the centre during the day. “Old age homes are very expensive and not everyone can afford it. “We therefore want to cater for people in the lower income bracket by providing them with care during the daytime,” Van der Merwe said. She believes there should be more day care centres for the elderly to keep them active and healthy. “Our policy and vision remain that older persons need to function independently in the community for as long as possible. Older people don’t want to be a burden. They want to be of worth to the community,” she said. Van der Merwe, who initiated the ACVV sports day 40 years ago, said their day care programme offered sporting activities, which include soccer and netball, and the centre also
had a health clinic to test for blood pressure and glucose levels. There are also exercise programmes, bead working, choir practice, social functions and outings. “It is important for elderly people to make use of their talents so that they can remain independent. People do not stop dancing and living when they grow old, they grow old when they stop dancing and living,” Van der Merwe said. She said it was important to include elderly people in their decision making on how the programme should be conducted. “We purposefully strive to acknowledge older persons by involving them in the management and operation of the service centres. “It is important to make the community happy so they should be the ones to decide what is on the programme each day,” Van der Merwe said.

Two elderly day care centres, run by Retha van der Merwe, aim at providing older people in the community with activities to keep them occupied. Van der Merwe, who has been working as a social worker for the last 52 years, is the founder and manager of ACVV Retha van der Merwe Retirement Home in Algoa Park and ACVV Govan Mbeki Community Centre. She said, while working as a social worker for ACVV PE South Branch in 1967, the community in Algoa Park approached her to start a similar centre for elderly people in the area. She then approached the Department of Social Development for assistance. After many obstacles, the seventh ACVV centre in Port Elizabeth was opened in 1985. “The first office was in an apartment with 10 elderly women in Algoa Park but later as the need for the facility increased, they built a bigger centre for the community,” said Van der Merwe. Bay’s Kuhle now hosting ‘Expresso’ RAZAAN PLAATJIES KUHLE Adams, from KwaMagxaki, Port Elizabeth, is one of the Expresso Morning Show’s newest presenters, after winning a presenter search competition recently. Adams, who attended Strelitzia High School in Uitenhage, is no stranger to being in front of the camera. She made it to the top three of the MTV Base VJ search competition in 2017. PE Express checked in with her to find out more about her journey to becoming a presenter on the popular breakfast show. Have you always wanted to be a TV presenter? Adams: Yes, I have, as far as I can remember. Who inspired you to follow this career path?
Adams: Twasa (Seipati Seoke) from Jam Alley and Bonang Matheba, when she was on Live. What was your highlight during the presenter search? Adams: Growing and learning so much, expanding my knowledge of the industry and pushing myself each week. What was your reaction/feelings when you were named as one of the presenters for the Expresso Show? Adams: I couldn’t believe it. I entered hoping to win, but when it actually happened it was absolutely amazing! A dream come true. How has your life changed since becoming a presenter? Adams: I get to travel and see life through a different lens. I am on television every day and a lot more people
recognise me, which is great, and everyone is so friendly. How did you remain motivated after ending your journey in the MTV Base VJ search competition? Adams: I knew what I wanted, and that one “No” is not there to set you back but to push you even more. I didn’t want to give up, so I just kept on going. Any words of encouragement or advice for someone interested in following a career in entertainment? Adams: You need to know what you want and believe in it. An overnight success takes years to achieve. Continuously work on your craft and be persistent with it. What are the elements that make a good TV presenter? Adams: Personality and being genu-
ine to yourself and the audience. Being able to communicate your feelings and experiences articulately so they can share the experience. You have received a great amount of positive feedback from the public. How does this make you feel? Adams: The support has been great from social media and in real life. People want to see me grow and win. I love it so much. It’s heart-warming. My success is not mine alone, so I hope to inspire more people to succeed and continue pursuing their dreams. What is your hope for your career in the future? Adams: I hope to grow and be bigger in the industry. I want to be a household name and continue to inspire people and share my experiences with them.

Calling all film enthusiasts: Short Film Festival held in Bay REPORTER THOSE passionate about South Africa’s emerging film talent, can look forward to Lavuth’ iBhayi Short Film Festival Summer 2019 which will take place from tomorrow, November 28, to Saturday, November 30. According to festival director, Denise Roodt, Lavuth’ iBhayi Short Film Festival is a celebration of South Africa’s multicultural and dynamic emerging filmmaking talent. “The festival is an initiative by Media Makers NPC to develop a cinemaloving culture in South Africa and to unearth new filmmaking talent from
across the nation,” Roodt said. The jam-packed programme will introduce the first-ever film production competition in which 17 original short films will compete for the title of best Lavuth’ iBhayi Short Film, Summer 2019. The three-day programme will kick off with a one-day boot camp for high school learners at The Media Workshop at 26 Bird Street, Central on November 28. This event is sold out. On November 29 the Lavuth’ iBhayi Workshop will take place, which is an opportunity for aspiring filmmakers to meet industry leaders and to attend a variety of talks and discussions on
issues faced aspiring filmmakers at Nelson Mandela University’s Loubser Auditorium, 2nd Avenue Campus. On November 30, the screening of all short-listed short film entries will take place at Nu Metro, The Boardwalk. Following the screening of the short films an awards ceremony in which prizes including a Fujifilm mirrorless camera and a grand prize of R10 000 will be awarded to the winner of the best short film and to those who win in a variety of categories. Attendees will then be treated to two very special feature film screenings. The first feature film will be the international award-winning Afri-
kaans film, Meerkat Maantuig, which was produced by Lavuth’ iBhayi Workshop presenter, André Scholtz. The second film will be South Africa’s 2020 Oscar contender and authentic Eastern Cape story, Knuckle City, which was produced and directed by Lavuth’ iBhayi Workshop presenters, Layla Swart and Jamil X.T. Qubeka. Roodt said the inaugural Lavuth’ iBhayi Short Film Festival attracted over 300 paying members in May this year, many of whom had never set foot in a movie cinema complex before. “We want that number to grow with every edition of the festival and, in that way, contribute to the growth of
the screen content industries in South Africa as a whole and the Eastern Cape in particular,” Roodt said. Tickets are available on Quicket at a cost of R100 per ticket. Tea, a light lunch and a reusable eco-friendly goody bag will be given to each attendee at the workshop. The ticket price for the screenings will include nine hours of entertainment, the opportunity to participate in the judging of the film festival entries and meet the filmmakers and judges. “IF you are out there, considering being a chef or pastry chef and you want to study, give us a chance.” Ever since its doors first opened in 2013, the South African Academy of Culinary Arts (SAACA) has been making a difference, both locally and internationally. With founder and principal, Ralph Gottschalk, at the wheel, and culinary arts lecturer, Erika Grebe, at his side, they are moulding individuals into some of the top chefs and pastry chefs out there. And they are ready to get their hands on the next lot. Enrolment for 2020 is currently open. They now offer the following: . A full diploma course in culinary arts over six or seven months; . A full diploma course in pastry arts over six or seven months; . A grand diploma which is when students enrol for a diploma in both culinary and pasty arts; . A certificate in culinary arts (part-time) . A food safety course. All courses at SAACA are internationally accredited through Highfield, UK. “The main aim of going to school is to learn as

much as possible in the best possible way. Erika and I bring substantial international experience to the table and we teach them what they need to know,” said Gottschalk. “I want students to go and succeed at the highest possible level. Which career path they end up choosing is up to them, but I want them to have every opportunity.” And they specialise in success. Many former SAACA students are employed in the five-star sector overseas. Next year will also be the fourth time that SAACA represents South Africa at the Young Chef Olympiad, where earlier this year they won the “The Plate” trophy. “Not one student has ever come back and said they didn’t make it. They all made it. The priority for us is that they learn, study and succeed... and stay in touch with us. I love for all students to come back and tell us where they are. The school is not just open to local hopefuls. They have students coming from as far as Kenya in the mix as well. “I can honestly say Ralph has got the biggest passion to create some of the best chefs there can be. He gives them all the necessary tools and he is constantly involved in their lives,” Grebe said. At any time, the school has a maximum of 12–14 students learning the fine culinary or pastry arts. Open day The South African Academy of Culinary Arts will have an open day for anyone and everyone interested in learning more about the school and what it has to offer. It will take place at 13 Mayfair Avenue, Fernglen, on December 7 at 16:00. Also keep a sharp eye out for their new website at www.saaca.co.za. For more info contact Ralph at 076 263 2721 or send an e-mail to info@saaca.co.za.

Milan devastate Pirates on home turf SELBY MADIKANE MATTA Milan embarrassed Bush Pirates 5-0 during their one-sided ABC Motsepe League game, which was played at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium, on Saturday. The home side, Pirates, looked as if they would score an early goal but the visiting side’s defence was resolute and organised. Milan right fullback, Yongama Qazu, delivered a perfect pass to their striker, Thando Komanise, who side-footed the ball into the back of the net in the 35th minute. The hosts pursued for the equalising goal, but their last touches failed them in particular in front of the goals. Milan went to the break leading 2-0,after their skipper, Sigqibo Janda, scored a goal in the 43rd minute. Pirates looked very disjointed in the second half, as they failed to play as a unit. However, Milan’s goalkeeper, Phumelela Senti, was not busy because he was not test-
ed at all. Milan looked remorseless as they increased the score after Janda scored his goal in the 61st minute. Komanise laid a straight pass to his skipper, Janda, who scored his third goal that increased the score line to 4-0 in the 79th minute. It seemed as if work had not been finished by Milan as Komanise tormented the defence of Pirates. Komanise set up a good move and whipped a good pass to the super substitute, Tsepo Ngobeni, who unleashed a powerful shot that resulted into their fifth goal, in the 83rd minute. The final score was 5-0 in favour of Matta Milan. TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE
Abu Dhabi Grand Prix: From dusk to darkness THE Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is here and it brings with it the end of the 2019 Formula 1 season. Race number 21 on the calendar is hosted at easily one of the most impressive venues that F1 visits. A gigantic complex that comprises the Ferrari World theme park, the Yas Hotel and the 5.5km-long Yas Marina circuit. The race, unique for its transition from dusk to darkness, is run over 55 laps, for which the current lap record of 1:40:279, set in 2009, is held by Sebastian Vettel. Designed by Herman Tilke, the track is dominated by a 1.2km back straight interrupted by the slow-speed ‘chicane’ of turns seven and eight. This stretch of the circuit is of particular interest as it does induce several overtaking moves throughout the race. Conceptualised in 2006, The Yas Marina circuit, situated just outside of Dubai, has never been one to produce big drama. But it’s had its fair share of striking moments since its 2009 in-
troduction. It is here in 2010 that Sebastian Vettel won the first of his four championship titles. And where in 2012 on his way to victory Kimi Raikkonen famously quipped over team radio “leave me alone, I know what I’m doing.” In 2016, Nico Rosberg too was crowned champion in Abu Dhabi and followed the biggest moment of his racing career with the even bigger bombshell of retirement. Who will it suit? All indications, and the enormously long straight, suggest that Ferrari should be in a strong position. But the Italian team has fallen short on Sundays in the last few Grands Prix. And they have the cloud of the Vettel/Leclerc relationship hanging over them too. There’s no doubt that Vettel and Leclerc will tow the PR line this weekend where the press is concerned. But they’ll still try to one-up each other, as they should. Mercedes, in particular Lewis Hamilton, has
Bonzai team shines on soccer field
always done well in Abu Dhabi but it is Red Bull who may just spring a surprise. The performance of the Honda power unit in Brazil was eyecatching. Given the final sector of the lap is dominated by medium to slow-speed corners that call for good mechanical grip Red Bull could well be in an excellent position this weekend. As far as we know Formula 1 will bid farewell to Nico Hulkenberg and Robert Kubica this weekend. Hulkenberg, to be replaced by Esteban Ocon in 2020, will leave F1 as its nearly man. While no doubt a talented driver, Hulkenberg simply never delivered the outstanding performances that he was expected to. He’ll have one more opportunity, though it’s a far-fetched one, to score that elusive podium. Kubica’s story is an unforgettable one. He burst onto the scene and immediately impressed with his speed. But for a nearly fatal rallying crash he would likely have ended up
at a top team sooner rather than later. Unfortunately it never panned out for the Polish driver. His comeback with Williams, though, is an incredible testament to his character, willpower, and determination. Ultimately though he was comprehensively outperformed by rookie teammate George Russell. But all is not lost, as Kubica may still be seen in the paddock as a test and development driver. Though some Formula 1 journeys and the 2019 season may be coming to their conclusion there are 55 more laps of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix before signing off.

Camper United, Madibaz Football share draw Shock upsets in SELBY MADIKANE FANS were treated to a high quality football encounter when Camper United shared a 1-1 draw with Madibaz Football, during their SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay SAB Regional League clash, at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium on Saturday. Madibaz were like a house on fire but Camper were also ready for a big showdown. The tempo of the game was very fast from the word go. The home side nearly scored the opening goal but their left wing, Lukhanyo Dumezweni’s efforts went wide. The NMU side fought tirelessly but the hosts’ goalkeeper, Mbonisi Mbele, showed his class. The hard work of Madibaz paid dividends as Siyanda Mbuthuma registered a spectacular goal. Camper did not give up hope, as they kept on attacking. Siyabulela Tsewana scored a goal from the
Bay Industrial Football League
penalty spot to level the matters at 1-1. Dumezweni tried to squeeze the ball into the back of net but the upright denied him, with the goalkeeper well beaten. The visitors could have scored a second goal but Mbuthuma’s shot was also saved by the upright.

FANS were taken aback when they saw the so-called big sides losing their games to the underdogs during the Nelson Mandela Bay Industrial Football League games which were played on Sunday. Autocast took Shatterprufe Neave Township to the cleaners when they handed them a 5-2 defeat in front of their loyal supporters at Struandale Grounds. Mpact rubbed salt into the wounds of Shatterprufe Struandale after they edged them 2-1 in their entertaining game at Struandale Grounds. The defeat followed Shatterprufe Struandale’s recent loss in the KC Hendicks Cup to Sovereign Foods recently. Tenneco Struandale crashed 2-0 to Kanu in their one-sided game. Fans who were kept on their feet, saw a football of high level when Continental were held into a 2-2 draw by Super Steel Uitenhage at Marock Road Fields.
