NMB cemeteries almost full
CARA-LEE DORFLING
O
VER the next seven to 10 years, all 36 cemeteries in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro will be full, according to Gregory Kops, acting director of cemeteries.
Only 11 of the cemeteries in the metro can still be used. The rest are full. Every weekend, 65 to 80 people are buried in the Motherwell cemetery. He said the metro should open more cemeteries urgently, but this process is no longer as
simple as it was before. “In the past, a piece of land was measured and fenced as a cemetery. No environmental impact assessment was done, as is the case today. “Graves in the Bethelsdorp graveyard lie on a slope and the Motherwell cemetery gets flood-
ed sometimes because no proper research was done on the ground,” said Kops. In addition, there is a shortage of available municipal land for cemeteries. The metro may, therefore, have to buy land. Continued on page 4

THREE suspects were arrested recently after they allegedly tried to steal steel rods from a bridge in Fairview. Little did the suspects know that they were trying to commit this act in full view of a private security officer. Fidelity ADT armed response officer Morne Britz was busy taking a tea break outside the company’s offices in Fairview when he looked towards the William Moffat Expressway bridge and saw what appeared to be a crime being committed. “Officer Britz quickly realised that he was witnessing the suspects trying to steal metal rods from the bridge. There is a strong element of trust between the personnel, and no doubt (Morne) Britz knew that he had to contact Bosch prior to moving into a potentially dangerous situation. The agent then contacted other local authorities, which ultimately ensured that the SAPS could arrest the remaining suspect,” concluded Ryan Britz. ; Fidelity ADT armed response officer, Morne Britz, with Community Information Centre agent, Samantha Bosch. New bicycles to improve safety, create jobs in Bay REPORTER AS Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) prepares to host the 2018 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, the city is distributing 50 Qhubeka bicycles, matched by a further 50 from Volkswagen South Africa (VWSA). The bicycles were distributed at a ceremony hosted by the NMBM Executive Mayor, Athol Trollip, at the Vuyisile Mini Square in front of the Port Elizabeth City Hall on May 23. The bicycles funded by NMBM are for 50 new city ambassadors who will act as “peace officers” and play a pivotal role in the safety and security apparatus of the municipality for the Ironman event on September 1 and 2. Mayor Trollip emphasised that the patrols will not only be to the benefit of athletes and residents at the beachfront, but will also assist in safeguarding the elderly and residents in areas from where the city ambassadors operate. “The project should go way beyond the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in September to ensure continuous programmes and intensified participation in cycling,” he added. The additional 50 bicycles from Volkswagen SA will be distributed to 30 beach officers and 20 tourism ambassadors. The aim of this public private partnership is to empower the community to support and protect tourists, visitors and cyclists through bicycle patrols, and in the process to create jobs and alleviate poverty. The community impact is a total of 100 new jobs that pay a monthly wage.
Bicycle recipients have been selected based on specific criteria that include being unemployed and aged between 18 and 35 years. “South Africa has high levels of youth unemployment, so, we’re excited that this programme will see 100 young people trained and kitted out as city ambassadors, tourism ambassadors and beach officers,” said Tsatsi Phaweni, Qhubeka executive director. “Furthermore, their new bicycles will belong to them and can be used as a mode of transport.” Phaweni explained that some beneficiaries were trained as bicycle mechanics to ensure the bicycles will be well maintained in the long term and to create an additional opportunity for a micro enterprise. “Visible bicycle patrols along the Ironman route, and visibility along beaches will assist visitors and tourists with information. “Their hospitality will help residents, visitors, tourists, cyclists and runners to feel safer,” she said. “We also hope this programme will stimulate interest in cycling among local communities and promote it as a mode of transport across NMBM. “Our long-term hope is to create a legacy programme that can be incorporated into existing neighbourhood watches, thus creating a sense of security in communities and the general public.” Trollip enthused about the city’s readiness to host the first-ever IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship to be hosted on the African continent. “As the host city for the 2018 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, we have extensive responsibilities involving planning and preparation in
a wide variety of fields. “These include the upgrade of road infrastructure, communication and marketing (including ICT and community outreach), safety and security, water safety, waste management, public transport, accommodation, tourism and delivery of a sustainable legacy for the community. “We acknowledge that we are faced with an increased challenge with the safety and security of athletes, particularly on cycling routes. “Our safety and security directorate, incorporating the metro police, traffic law enforcement and security services, initiated several proactive safety measures in collaboration with the South African Police Service (SAPS), sporting clubs representing cyclists, IRONMAN South Africa and the communities along the cycling route,” Trollip added. Triathletes from 90 countries already qualified to participate in Port Elizabeth in September with more qualifying slots still up for grabs during regional IRONMAN events around the world. “It is amazing to see the city come together in making every effort to secure the safety of our athletes,” said Paul Wolff, IRONMAN South Africa director of operations. “Safety is a top priority for us as we welcome many international athletes to our country and specifically to Nelson Mandela Bay. It is encouraging to see everybody coming together and taking ownership of the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship. We are supportive of the Qhubeka initiative and are confident it will make a difference.” One of the biggest employers in Nelson Mandela Bay, VWSA, echoed

similar sentiments. In an age where community involvement and partnerships with societal groups are increasingly being recognised as indispensable, VW SA’s partnership with Qhubeka has extended beyond schools to look at other opportunities to make a positive and tangible dif-
ference in the communities in which we operate,” said Meredith Kelly, marketing manager for passenger vehicles for VWSA. “Through this donation we hope to not only mobilise South African communities but help ensure a better future for all who live in the country,” she concluded.

Water crisis remains critical REPORTER THE average water levels for dams across the Eastern Cape province have decreased slightly during the past week and are currently sitting at 67.9%. According to the Department of Water and Sanitation, the water crisis remains critical in Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB). The water storage levels in
dams across the NMB was below 35% last week. At this time last year it was 38.2%. The Algoa Water Supply System, with five major dams serving the area of NMB, is struggling, with the exception of Loerie Dam sitting at 93.5%. The Department of Water and Sanitation is urging residents in the province to use water sparingly and for all sectors to adhere to water restrictions that are in place.

Consisting of a number of projects focusing on animal welfare, the MACM is the first of its kind in the city. Partnerships with animal welfare organisations and the assistance of volunteers are key to the success of these projects. The first-ever mass dog sterilisation project will start in Motherwell on June 10. The project will focus on dogs from across the city whose owners would not otherwise be able to afford the procedure. “The metro is proud to be partnering with the Animal Welfare Society for the June 10 launch event where the aim is to sterilise approximately 200 dogs in one day, said Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Athol Trollip.
“A further 480 dogs will be sterilised over a number of weeks in partnership with various veterinary clinics, he said. “To achieve this ambitious launch event target, we are calling for 14 volunteers, all of whom need to be qualified veterinary nurses or similar to assist with procedures on the day. MACM will focus on the care and welfare of both domestic and wild animals in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro. According to Trollip, the initiative speaks to the coalition government’s vision of a forward-thinking city. The MACM will be made up of a number of ongoing and new projects, some of which have already started. “These projects aim to ensure the safety of residents, in instances where mismanaged animals pose risk, while also improving the welfare of all animals metrowide, Trollip explained. Another project that has already commenced is the redesign of weirs
and the construction of fish ladders along the lower Baakens River. This allows the migration of fish up and down the river, necessary to prevent the complete extinction of several threatened species of fish, endemic to the area. “We are also in the process of procuring reflective ear tags for urban cattle that often go astray. “This will make stray cattle visible to motorists, preventing accidents. “A simple act of kindness and compassion towards a single animal may not mean anything to all creatures, but will mean everything to one. The metro is in need of 14 volunteers for the event on June 10, all of whom need to be qualified veterinary nurses or similar to assist with procedures on the day. Any eligible and interested individuals can contact Mayor Trollip’s chief of staff on kadelbert@mandelametro.gov.za.
Recycling facility in Summerstrand closes REPORTER TOTAL South Africa recently announced the removal of the recycle bins that were at the Total Summerstrand service station. In the interest of reducing litter and encouraging recycling among communities, Total introduced these
recycling bins several years ago. However, because of the abuse of this facility by members of the public, it has become an eye sore and a health risk, and has attracted vagrants. “People have been dumping items, such as garden refuse, unwanted furniture, clothing and food, despite bins clearly being marked otherwise,
and it is for this reason that the decision to close this facility has been taken, said Reina Cullinan, Total’s corporate communications and marketing manager. “We regret having to take this decision, but we have to operate in the best interest of our service stations and the communities in which Total operates.
Yet another fake SMS targets SASSA beneficiaries THE South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has issued a warning about the increasing number of fake SMSes that are being circulated to beneficiaries. In a recent incident, SASSA has received reports that beneficiaries received an SMS instructing them to reregister their social grants because cash paypoints would be fully phased out by August this year. The fake SMS reads as follows, “All Sassa recipients.please you have to reregister yourself for Sassa payments. From 1st of June. There is will be no paypoints anymore. Each 1 has to apply by post office or a bank of your choice. So please collect application forms by office from the 1st of June to take to bank or post office your choice. If you do not re register you will not get paid in August or thereafter. Please share with all state pensioners. Thank you.
Beneficiaries are urged to ignore this message as it is incorrect. Contrary to this SMS, beneficiaries do not have to re-register their grants; however, they are requested to swap their old SASSA cards for the new SASSA card by end of September. This can be done at local SASSA offices, paypoints or selected post offices. Furthermore, SASSA also clarified that cash paypoints will be gradually reduced and not fully phased out as alleged in the SMS. Where a paypoint is within 5km radius of a post office, the post office will take over payments for that paypoint. “Beneficiaries can also choose whichever method of payment that they are comfortable with. They can opt for their social grant to be deposited directly into their personal bank account including PostBank or they can use their SASSA cards to withdraw at
ATMs and merchants, e.g Pick n Pay, Shoprite etc., SASSA said in a statement. “Should a beneficiary choose to have their grant deposited directly into their personal bank account they should go to the SASSA office where they registered their grant and request for an Annexure C form. “This form must be completed by their bank of choice and returned to SASSA. SASSA reiterates that beneficiaries will continue to receive their social grants beyond August 2018. Reacting to news of this fake SMS, the Minister of Social Development, Susan Shabangu, urged beneficiaries to be aware of such messages. She further encouraged beneficiaries to contact the SASSA toll-free line on 0800 60 10 11 or to visit their nearest SASSA office if ever in doubt about any message they receive. – REPORTER

Continued from page 1 In an effort to get more space for graves soon, it is planned to expand the Matanzima (KwaNobuhle) and Malabar cemeteries. Another solution in their search for more space is to offer graves in the footpaths of certain cemeteries. “In the North End cemetery, where the footpaths are very wide, we have been given permission to make graves available. When the big open roads are no longer accessible to cars, it also helps to keep people away who are up to no good in the cemetery, said Kops. New fences are also erected around cemeteries according to a priority list to curb crime and to prevent vandalism. Lance Grootboom, Member of the Mayoral Committee for
Public Health, said that R8 million was spent on Motherwell’s border fence and another R5 million for a border fence at the Forest Hill cemetery. “The fences are very necessary. Where fences are errected, the difference can be seen. The cemetery looks more beautiful and cleaner, and it also offers better access control. He says both projects should be completed by the end of June. But damage that has already been done to Motherwell’s unfinished fence can cause the project to slow down. Residents of an adjacent informal settlement damage the fence to take a shortcut or to use the cemetery’s water. Grootboom said that concrete would soon be placed under the fence to try to prevent this.

Snookball frenzy hits Bay Nuwe trappe vir Lorraine Laerskool ZELDRÉ STRAUSS SWANEPOEL A NEW sport frenzy has arrived in Port Elizabeth. Snookball, as the name suggests, is a game of snooker/pool played on a turf with (soccer) balls and is exclusive to the Fairview Action Arena. Snookball, also known as footpool, is played by two players a side. The game works the same way as the traditional version of the game, but players use their feet to get the balls in the “pocket”. The game is played without a referee and the same rules for pool apply. Playing time is approximately 10-20 minutes. The pitch is 6x4m and consists of synthetic grass on which any sports footwear can be worn.
The Fairview Action Arena, which focuses on social and corporate five-a-side soccer leagues and tournaments has brought snookball to Port Elizabeth as part of their aim to promote an active lifestyle, especially among the city’s youth. Matthew Potgieter, Fairview Action Arena Sports Director, said, “Our five-a-side league games are very popular and snookball is being offered to those who want to try something different while the soccer games are being played. “We are planning on having snookball tournaments and we want to encourage everyone, especially women, to join in this fun sport.” The opening hours for snookball games are from 10:00 to 22:00 on Mondays to Sundays. For info contact Potgieter on 083 397 2433.

TOURISM IN THE SPOTLIGHT: SURF LESSONS
Riding a wave of excitement at surf school Two tourism staffers decided to give up their cosy, warm office and make King’s Beach their playground last week. TINNEKE GOEDHALS from PE Express was there to capture the memorable moment of their very first surf lesson. LOTS of energy, willpower and the right attitude is all it took for René Derrocks and Phumeza Ndzambo from Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism to make memories that will last a lifetime. These two brave ladies went for a one-hour surf lesson at King’s Beach – one of three NMB beaches awarded with the coveted Blue Flag status. After a warm welcome at Oceanside Surfstore and getting into that wetsuit (a challenge on its own) they took to the beach with a surfboard under the arm. Learn2Surf freelance instructor Robin van der Merwe first showed them the ropes on sand. With spirits running high, the two braved the cold water under her watchful eye. Van der Merwe has been surfing for close to 11 years.
WIN! WIN!
Two people can win a surf lesson (includes rental of surfboard, wetsuit.) Go to our facebook page to enter.
René Derrocks takes to the surf during her lesson, while Robin van der Merwe looks on. Afterwards both ladies agreed that even though this might not have been on their bucket list, they are happy to add it AND tick it off. “It was exciting, different but fun, really fun. In fact, I feel like going back

now! Even if you were nervous like I was, you can still enjoy yourself and have a good time,” said Nzambo. Derrocks also could not contain her excitement afterwards. “Absolutely brilliant, I loved being on it (surfboard). It is insane when those waves hit you right in the face, but you kind of get used to it. So, if you are up for something new, something different, do come out and try it,” she said. And if you prefer to stay on dry land, you can always rent a bicycle, rollerblades or a skateboard for R60 an hour. Bodyboards can also be rented. Oceanside Surf Store stocks toprange swimwear, including famous brands like Seafolly, Moontide and Billabong, other men’s, women’s and kiddies’ beach clothing, surf-style jewellery as well as beach accessories, such as hats, sun block, shoes, bags and toys for kids. And they cater for all shapes and sizes from a XS to a 54, says owner Delene Landy. ) The activities are done in partnership with Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism. S Watch the video on our Facebook page.

Homeschoolers have a blast at entrepreneurial market ANIKA DE BEER FUN and laughter were the order of the day on Saturday, June 2, when the local homeschool community came together to host what turned out to be a very successful market at Fountain Vineyard Church in Miramar. In a refreshing change from most conventional markets, the group of parents and children only sold products that were handmade. The market also went a long way towards helping the parents teach their children about finances and entrepreneurship. According to Tersia Muston, one of the parents, the homeschool community is growing very quickly in Port Elizabeth. “This used to be a foreign matter, but
Children had a blast at the homeschool market.
more and more parents are becoming frustrated with the school system. Each parent teaches their own child at home. “Although we work together as a community in doing activities, most of us have a different curriculum we follow.” The group of families work together to provide the social and cultural needs of their children without sending them to mainstream schools. They come together every week for sports activities, art lessons, visits to museums and much more. This was the first time they tried their hand at hosting an entrepreneurial market, though. According to Muston, it was a huge success. “We had 30 tables at the market. Each table represented at least one child, but most families do have two or more children that were involved,” she said. “We did not expect it to be as big as it became. It was just an idea a few parents came up with and it was supported by hundreds.” Asked what she thought the children enjoyed most about the market, she said, “I am pretty sure it was the pocket money they made! But also being around their friends and the actual making of the products. They all were very proud to display their products. “They loved the egg races, jumping castle, tug of war and wheelbarrow races.” The homeschoolers are planning to make the market an annual event. For now, they are focusing on the weekly tennis club they have started and the upcoming hike at Humbleways in Lovemore Heights this Saturday. For more info on the homeschool community, contact Tersia Muston on 081 471 5425 or follow her blog at www. organicmommiessa.com.

ney for one last gasp performance at Eddie Macs in Victoria Park today. The duo have been working in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the last seven years, and have not performed in Port Elizabeth since 2014. This event is to help them raise funds for Hattingh’s children to move to the UAE with him, which is an extremely expensive undertaking. The duo will perform with backing tracks as they have been doing in the UAE, and will play all the favourites they’re known for, as well as a lot of new material that Port Elizabeth music fans have never heard them play before. There will be lots of 1960s, ’70s and ’80s hits from bands like Queen, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and many others. The one night only show starts at 19:00. The entry fee of R50 at the door gets you in for four hours of great tunes.

TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE
Hamilton is the man to beat in Canada THE Formula 1 paddock heads west for the seventh round of the season around Canada’s famed Gilles Villeneuve circuit. The circuit, in the midst of the St. Lawrence Seaway, is one characterised by its heavy demand on braking and the close proximity of the barriers. Although it is one of the shortest circuits on the calendar, it rarely fails to produce exciting racing. In 2011, then McLaren driver Jenson Button produced one of the most stunning races of his career to come from dead last to a spectacular last lap win. It is here too that now four-time world champion Lewis Hamilton won his first race 10 years ago in
2008 and where, in 2001, Ralf and Michael Schumacher became the first set of siblings to finish first and second in a grand prix. Overtaking is far easier around the Canadian circuit than it was two weeks ago in Monaco, too, with several heavy braking zones offering the prime opportunity to get ahead. Naturally, the best place to start any Grand Prix is in pole position. However, it isn’t a deal-breaker in Canada if you don’t. In fact, in the 48 Canadian Grands Prix that has been held since 1967, the driver in pole position has gone on to take victory only 45% of the time. Traditionally, it has been a race where Mercedes excel.
The cooler conditions play to the strengths of their car and, importantly, places less emphasis on tyre heat-up. For the weekend’s running, Pirelli has nominated the hyper-, ultra-, and supersoft compounds. While Ferrari have opted to lean more towards the pink-walled Hypersoft compound, Mercedes has chosen to cover their basis by opting for a few extra sets of the ultrasoft compound. The hypersoft proved quite fragile in Monaco, and that on a circuit dominated by slow-speed corners. In Canada, there will undoubtedly by more strain on the tyres and bigger headaches for teams and drivers where it concerns strategy.
Elsewhere, Lance Stroll, the only Canadian in the field, arrives at his home grand prix after what has been a tough start to the season. From the outset the Williams car hasn’t looked competitive and even though the team are putting corrective measures in place, it will take some time to translate to performance on the track. Nevertheless, one can’t help but feel that Stroll’s attitude and demeanour hasn’t been a benefit to the team. While he’s certainly had reason to be frustrated with the lack of speed in his car, his attitude often borders on petulant. Despite the difficulties of the car, Stroll has been consistently outperformed by his rookie
teammate Sergey Sirotkin. What’s more, his teammate Sirotkin’s own statements in the press have been highly complimentary of the team’s spirit and their dedication to turning things around. And in case it has slipped Stroll’s mind, there is a certain Robert Kubica waiting in the wings ready and more than able to take the young Canadian’s seat. The Canadian GP has hardly ever been one of the most predictable races in any F1 season, but the expectation will be that Lewis Hamilton should be incredibly difficult to beat. The good news is that it will hardly be a repeat of the rather dull Monaco Grand Prix.

Showvillage qualify for promotional play-offs SELBY MADIKANE FOLLOWING their hard-fought 1-1 draw with Shining Stars at Motherwell NU 11 Ground on Sunday, Showvillage United FC were crowned the 2018 Motherwell Football Association (MOFA) Premier League champions. Coming into the match in high spirits after overcoming Real Strikers 3-0 on Saturday, The Stallions, as Showvillage United are known, knew that the draw was good enough for them to take the honours on Sunday. However, Stars, which boasts a number of talented youngsters, were under pressure to win their two remaining games in order for them to win the title. Stars’ hopes were kept alive after they defeated Royal Bucks 2-0 on Saturday. Unfortunately, something that Stars’ loyal supporters did not want to see was their side dropping points in one of their last matches of the league season. Stars failed to lift the prestigious league trophy as Showvillage United held them to a 1-1 draw. As a result, Showvillage were crowned the 2018 MOFA Premier League champions. The defending champions, Manchester United, lost 3-0 to Wells United at Mother-

Manchester played to a goalless draw against their neighbours, Tomorrow Stars, in their game that was abandoned by the referee at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Saturday. Tomorrow Stars closed the season on a high note after they defeated Real Strikers 2-1 at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Sunday. In their First Division clash, Seven Sundowns managed to topple their neighbours, Eleven Brothers, 2-0 at the Motherwell NU 13 Grounds on Sunday. Anathi Mncono scored the opening goal in the 50th minute to put Seven Sundowns in the lead 1-0. Sundowns’ skipper Mava Klaas, who was on top of his game at the weekend, scored a penalty which helped his side claim three valuable points in the 70th minute. Another game which stole the show was Eleven Stars against NU 7 Citizens, which saw Stars winning 2-1.
