New lease of life for girl who was stabbed 57 times NCEBA DLADLA

T

HE life of an 18-year old girl from East London, Sinalo Panama, changed dramatically when she was stabbed 57 times for stopping a would-be electricity thief (popularly known as izinyoka) in August 2012.

The attack happened when she refused to let Zamuxolo Tengwa (27) make an illegal electricity connection via her home’s electric line. But with the help of Sanco and Good Samaritans, on Monday Sinalo received the medical treatment in Port Elizabeth she needed but could not afford. Sinalo, who is a former amateur boxer, is a matric pupil at Lingelethu Secondary School in Phumlani township. According to the South African National Civic Organisations (SANCO) spokesperson Dumisani Mthalane, Sinalo’s whole body, face, head, and hands were scarred as a result of the attack. According to Sinalo’s mother Lwandisa Mbenenge her daughter was going to turn professional as a boxer this year. “Her dreams were shattered. She loved

school and sport and was not even dating,” said Mbenenge. Mthalane said his office was touched by the plight of this brave young girl who needed psychological and medical attention which her family could unfortunately not afford. Thanks to SANCO she had received medical attention, counselling and rehabilitation, which would normally cost R58 000, at the Netcare Greenacres Hospital. “As SANCO we believe that our responsibilities include fighting crime, corruption and injustice in our communities,” said Mthalane, thanking Aspen Pharmacare, Netcare and other good Samaritans who came forward to help. “We believe their kindness in helpin Sinalo with medical assistance will go a long way towards helping her back to a normal life again,” said Mthalane. To this end Sinalo attended her school’s matric ball at the weekend. Mthalane believes that this kind of cooperation shows that South Africa still had many good, honest and considerate citizens and organisations which are prepared to stand and be counted in times of need. Although Sinalo will never box again, her mother hopes she could get more counselling, so she could come to terms with what happened, and lead a normal life again. Mthalane also took the opportunity to call members of the community to come back to humanity; to resist the temptation to resort to criminal ways and destructive actions when protesting against lack of service delivery. “We believe that joint efforts with government can bear fruits faster than the destruction of existing amenities and services,” said Mthalane, urging the community of Phumlani to stand together and defend the gains of the new order. Sinalo’s attacker was arrested and received a 12year jail term. According to Mthalane however, there are plans to find a place for Sinalo in Nelson Mandela Bay as some of her attackers’ friends were allegedly harassing her.

McDonald’s recently announced the launch of ‘Street Rhythm’, a national competition that encourages individuals and groups to showcase their talent for DJ mixing or dance. Two of the finalists, DJ Muzero (pictured) and DejaVu Dance Crew hail from PE, and will compete in the final event on June 28 in Johannesburg where two of the eight semifinalists will walk away winners (one DJ and one Dance Crew). Muzero has been DJ’ing for 3 years, inspired by his love for music especially Hip Hop and motivated by his idols such as DJ Naves, Jazzy Jazz and Sphectacula. According to DJ Muzero getting this far in the McDonald’s Street Rhythm competition has already opened up doors for him and allowed him to play to bigger crowds, which is important for him as it brings more attention to him and his talent. BayTV seek legal advice after video footage taken by SAPS NCEBA DLADLA LOCAL community television station Bay TV is seeking legal advice after members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) allegedly threatened their journalists to hand over the video-footage that they took at a violent incident in Port Elizabeth recently. According to the station’s management, police forcibly took the video footage and the memory card. Owing to the television station’s limited financial resources they are now struggling to do their work properly without the equipment. According to BayTV Deputy Station Manager Lungile Nduvane, the graphic video footage was of local “residents bludgeoning Somali nationals to death” in Booysens Park on May 30.

“Instead of conducting their own investigations as the law-enforcement agency, police from the task team unit gate-crashed our studios and coerced journalists into submitting the tapes to them,” said Nduvane. He added that the Police had a search warrant. According to Nduvane, in reporting the story, they were carrying out their mandate to deliver the best quality news to the local community without fear or favour. “We were commanded by our core-business to give riveting news based on the facts as we saw them, but the police came into our office and acted as if the tapes had been stolen from their dockets,” said Nduvane, adding that even though they cooperated, police came back on 9 June to demand raw video footage. “We refused, asking them to put their request in writing but that was turned down,” said Ndu-

“We were commanded by our core-business to give riveting news based on the facts as we saw them, but the police came into our office and acted as if the tapes had been stolen from their dockets.” LUNGILE NDUVANE vane, adding that police who carried a subpoena threatened to charge leader of the news crew Sandisiwe Williams for obstruction of justice. BayTV claimed they were not getting any an-

swers from the office of the National Police Commissioner: Head of Communications. “We have now taken the matter to our lawyers,” said Nduvane. PE Express Indaba made some enquiries too to SAPS National Corporote Communications General Phuti Setati who said, “Our office has since been in liaison with the Office of the Provincial Commissioner which confirmed that the SAPS followed all due processes and procedures to obtain the tapes in question.” Gen. Setati said the SAPS provided the necessary legal documentation to Bay TV which in terms of the law permitted them to obtain footage they had on the incident. “The TV station has threatened SAPS with legal action and therefore it is in our best interest not to comment on this matter any further,” said Setati.

Pensioners warned against fraudulent get-rich-quick schemes doing the rounds NCEBA DLADLA THE Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) has issued a warning to Mandela Bay pensioners to beware of fraudsters pretending to be working for the JSE. These fly-by-night business owners sell a getrich-quick investment scheme to unsuspecting individuals promising them unrealistic returns and then disappear with their hardearned cash. “We have had frequent calls from individuals who have fallen for fly by night ‘businesses’

promising unrealistic investment returns, which suggests that many South Africans are still being caught by these tricksters,” said Ralph Speirs of the JSE. Speirs said they were going around the country to warn would-be victims and about a week ago they met Nelson Mandela Bay residents at the Summerstrand Hotel in Port Elizabeth. “We do not necessarily have statistics of people having fallen prey to the scheme in the Port Elizabeth area; but we believe, fore-warned is fore-armed,” said Speirs. According to Speirs, the All Share Index – which is the top 160 companies on the JSE –

has made an average return of 17% per annum for the last 10 years. “So, if someone is promising any percentage greater than 17% a year this needs to be carefully considered before one thinks of investing in the product,” explained Speirs. He said potential investors should first check whether the company is registered with the Financial Services Board (FSB) as well as check whether one is dealing with an FSB provider that is dealing with a registered stockbroker with the JSE. Lastly one should find out whether it is an investment product or just a tool to buy shares.

Speirs said most stock brokers registered with the JSE are not going to come to your office to sell their products, so if you want to check the legitimacy of the broker, always check with the JSE to verify. According to Speirs, investors must make sure that they don’t buy software to invest in the stock market, because they don’t need it. He said, “Making money on the stock market is possible; however, make sure that you do your home work before parting with your hard-earned cash. You do not need software to invest, but a broking account with a registered stock-broker.”

SACP wishes ANC a successful Provincial Conference this week THE South African Communist Party (SACP) in the Eastern Cape province has wished the African National Congress (ANC) a united and successful 7th Provincial Conference which will be held in Port Elizabeth from today (June 26) until Saturday. In a statement issued by the SACP on Monday, it said that millions of people in the Eastern Cape Province and other parts of the country was enthusiastically awaiting the outcomes of the ANC 7th Provincial Conference. “We believe that the ANC 7th Provincial Conference should not be viewed and used as an event but as an important platform to de-

fend, deepen and advance the National Democratic Revolution (NDR),” the statement read. “We are of the firm view that the ANC should use the 7th Provincial Conference to consolidate organisational gains and place African National Congress on a different plane to lead radical socio-economic transformation for the benefit of the workers and the poor in the province. It is in this regard that we sincerely trust that the ANC Provincial Conference will take constructive measures to achieve the radical socio-economic transformation.” Among the measures called for by the SACP is the re-industrialization of the province as

the basis for creation of decent work and sustainable livelihoods as well as measures to combat the existing corruption network in the government for this corruption leading to stealing resources that are supposed to benefit the workers and the poor. “The SACP is of the view that since the highly contested ANC 6th Provincial Conference held in River Park in 2009, the ANC has achieved relative stability in the province. It is in this context that we wish to reiterate our respect for the ANC to deal with its internal affairs but that should not be construed to mean we are a disinterested party on what kind of policies and the discussions on leader-

ship outcomes that the ANC will come up with. “We believe that under the current ANC Provincial Leadership we have built a firm basis for a stronger alliance going forward. We would like to see the leadership that is committed to upholding the dignity and integrity of our movement; isolate and defeat corrupt elements within our movement who wish to use this gigantic movement as the vehicle for self-conspicuous consumption.” In the statement the SACP Eastern Cape recommitted themselves to work with the ANC and other progressive formations in transforming the lives of the workers and the poor.

NMB residents give their view on Agang SA founder Mamphele Ramphele’s take on education Leader of the newly formed political party Agang SA, Dr Mamphele Ramphele said government has failed South African youth through corrupt and inept management of the education system. In a direct response, the Department of Education argues that Ramphele is wrong; she’s petty, misleading and shows lack of undertanding of education post apartheid. With June being Youth Month, PE Express Indaba’s NCEBA DLADLA asked Nelson Mandela Bay residents what they thought about the two arguments.

Nothobile Jack Gladys Doli ) Gladys Doli of Motherwell said: “Ramphele is right. Our children’s education is poor. Many pass matric and are sitting at home without jobs. We are, however, concerned that Ramphele is only saying this now that she’s starting her own political party.”

) “Ramphele is wrong. Government is doing everything in its power to give our children the best education,” said Nothobile Jack of Khiwane. According to Jack, there are so many good things that our government is doing and that “Zuma’s government does not need criticism from people like Ramphele.”

Pamela Njajula ) “Ramphele is right. Government is misusing funds by doing unnecessary things instead of investing in children’s education. Look, many of our township schools need upgrading but we’re told there is no money,” said Motherwell’s Pamela Njajula.

William Matiwane ) “Our children do get education but for me it’s getting jobs that is the problem. Government in my view is playing its role but it’s not enough. Of course there are areas where they are failing, like people in areas like Walmer want houses and other developments,” said William Matiwane of Motherwell.

New Brighton woman (35) arrested for identity theft and fraud More victims sought by Police NCEBA DLADLA MEMBERS of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Crime Prevention Unit in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth are looking for possible victims of crime after arresting a 35 year old woman for fraud and identity theft last Thursday.

The woman was arrested in Sangotsha Street, New Brighton after a tip-off from members of the community, according to police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge. “The suspect was arrested at her home after police followed up information,” said Capt. Beetge.

The Police found bank cards, identity documents and various other documents and cards. According to Beetge, the police found identity documents belonging to other persons with which the suspect allegedly opened fraudulent bank accounts and other business accounts from which she ob-

tained loans and purchased household goods and furniture. The woman appeared in court last week Friday. The Police are however, still busy with investigations to ascertain whether there were other victims of fraud who might have fallen prey to the woman’s fraudulent actions.

Cikizwa Saul from New Brighton in Port Elizabeth. I was diagnosed with asthma and tonsillitis when I was twelve years old. In 2009 I started experiencing backache and headaches and was later diagnosed with high blood pressure. I went to the clinic for treatment but in 2010 I overheard people in the taxi talking about Gotha products. I stopped the taxi at the Pick n Pay centre and bought Gotha spray and sprayed it on my back and rubbed it in. I also sprayed it in my mouth. At home I washed my swollen feet and sprayed my feet. Within three days I experienced no more pains and my blood pressure was normal. I advise people to buy Gotha products. They are excellent products and you will see the results. Go forward Gotha Health. I am Siphe Mfihlo from Whittlesea (Queenstown) now residing at Orange Farm (Gauteng) My situation was beyond redemption before I learned about Magogotha health products. I had exasperating stomach problems, my face was covered with something like dandruff, which was embarrassing to appear in public. I read about this Gotha health product in a newspaper and visited one of their stores where I bought Ostrich Oil Soap, Re-gen Skin Cream and Herbal Tea blend. I utilised this product for a while and within three weeks there was a massive change in my body and to my face. I value the product and I recommend it to the nation or for everyone with the same problem. Thank you for making a difference in my life and keep up the good work and for making us proud of your Gotha products.

My name is Siqhamo Mnyazi. Last year I injured my shoulder when I was playing football with friends. I experienced a lot of pain; I couldn't even sleep the first night. My radio was on Umhlobo Wenene FM and I heard about the Gotha Health products. I went to the pharmacy to buy the Magogotha twin pack. I used the Aloe spray regularly on my shoulder. It was unbelievable. Just 3 weeks and I was healed. I will suggest the Gotha products to any person with a sport injury. Gotha products work 100%. I recommend the Gotha product, thank you GOTHA HEALTH.

My name is Vuyiswa Gwaqu from Siya Street, Joe Slovo in Port Elizabeth. One day I was cleaning my yard, when I felt a sharp pain in my spinal cord. The doctors diagnosed me with stress, arthritis and tonsillitis. It was very painful. I heard people talking about Gotha Products on the radio and early the next morning I took a taxi to a Gotha shop in the Pick n Pay centre. I bought a Twin Pack and Aloe Spray. I used the products and after just two weeks I could see the improvement. Then my husband passed away and I didn't have enough money to buy the products. It was a very stressful time, but then I bought the Herbal Tea blend and the stress was gone. Forward Gotha! Forward. Carniboost + Hypermag - Twin pack is a

combination of Magnesium and L-Crnitine. Magnesium is an essential mineral for staying healthy, it improves muscle function and prevents insomnia, constipation, heart attacks, hypertension and migraines. L-Carnitine has been found to improve the body's ability to improve memory, increase energy, raise metabolism, and enhance overall quality of life.

Eunice Tokwe from Kwazakhele in Port Elizabeth. Previously I had a job in a restaurant, but had to stop working due to my knee problem and high blood pressure. I couldn't walk for long distances and it was difficult to stand for any length of time. As time passed I heard people on the radio speaking about Gotha Twin Pack. I visited one of their branches in Dasi, accompanied by my grandchildren. They had to carry me to the top of the stairs. I bought the Twin Pack and Aloe spray. I drank the tablets and drops in the morning and applied the spray to my knee. I have been using Magogotha products now for five years and honestly, I can walk again without any assistance and I have no more pains in my knee. I do all the cleaning at home myself and there is nothing I cannot do. Furthermore, my sister had blisters on the back of her ear. I also gave her Gotha spray. Within seven days my sister was completely healed and the blisters disappeared. When I go for checkups even my high blood pressure is normal. I will use Gotha Products till the end of my life.

My name is Tornado Khetho from Lusikisiki in Ngobozana location. I injured my knee playing football with some of the guys in my community. I heard about Gotha Health. Xhosa poet Zanzolo is a Hip Hop Star on show at 469 Lounge in Motherwell NCEBA DLADLA ISIXHOSA Hip Hop sensation Khangelani Ncamile aka Zanzolo will be performing at 469 Lounge in Motherwell, Port Elizabeth this Saturday 30th June. The show starts at 2pm. Zanzolo will be promoting his second album “Iimbongi Zihlasela Ngosiba” which was released late last year. In this 18-track album Zanzolo worked with the wellknown Cape Town group Driemankaap. This Cape Town based traditional poet (imbongi) and social commentator from Lady Frere in the Eastern Cape who fuses his poetry with music is looking forward to his performance in Nelson Mandela Bay after receiving rave reviews from his first album. “Some of my songs enjoyed march airplay at National radio stations including Umhlobo Wenene FM,” enthused Zanzo-

lo. He added, “In this album I talk about issues that people do not like to talk about like the Marikana massacre, the farm workers strike and police brutality that we have witnessed in the recent past,” said Zanzolo, adding that people especially from the province love his music because he rhymes in isiXhosa. “It’s important that musicians talk about pertinent issues that affect communities such as the likes of Hugh Masekela and mama Miriam Makeba whose music touches a nerve,” said Zanzolo. According to Zanzolo, whose debut album Unendlebe nje unetyala released in 2008 catapulted him to stardom, Qalazive, maXhoseni and Prince will be among the supporting acts. Admission for the show is R20 at the door and tickets are available at R15 each at 469 Lounge also known as KwaMdebs in Motherwell.

Unity Festival for traditional and choral music lovers NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay Gospel, Traditional and Choral music lovers are invited to attend the Eastern Cape Police Music Arts and Culture Association (POLMUSCA) Unity Festival scheduled to take place at the Coega Village Conference Centre in Port Elizabeth, this weekend. The Gospel and Traditional Competition will be held on Friday 28 June from 1pm while the Choral Music Competition is scheduled to take place at the same venue, the following day from 8am. “We are expecting 12 Gospel groups and six traditional groups participating this Friday 28th June; and 15 choral choirs coming from the Eastern Cape regions participating on Saturday the 29th,” said provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Khaya Tonjeni. “Admission is free on both days. The idea is to attract as many people as possi-

ble to the venue to enjoy the best of African Traditional Music in its diversity; and also to be part of the SAPS crime prevention strategies,” said Lt Tonjeni. This will be the 21st Birthday Celebration of this music extravaganza, an SAPS initiative with Old Mutual as a partner. The festival was held in Mthatha last year and Masangane (SAPS Provincial Headquarters Choir which is based at Griffiths Mxenge Building in Zwelitsha) won the competition and progressed to the Western Cape where they came second in the national choral competition and took the honours in the traditional category. Winners receive trophies and not cash. “No money. This is about building the esprit de corps,” he explained. Tonjeni urged people to come in droves to spend the two days in style and enjoy the best of what the Eastern Cape policemen and women including public service members and reservists could offer, musically.

Bay’s amateur boxers bring home four gold medals in EC champs NCEBA DLADLA THE days when Nelson Mandela Bay used to be the home of great boxing champions are returning. This is thanks to the hard work of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro’s Amateur Boxing Organisation. The metro came second in the Eastern Cape Amateur Boxing Organisation (ECABO) Championships held in Queenstown last week. “We won four gold medals and came second to Buffalo City Municipality out of the 12 regions that competed in the championships,” said the metro municipality amateur boxing structure’s PRO, Mazizi Vumazonke.

Vumazonke said that Buffalo City edged them out with only one silver medal. Three of Nelson Mandela Bay’s boxers, two males and a female did well enough to be selected to represent ECABO in the national championships in Pretoria in the first week of July. The metro’s head coach Mphuthumi Makeleni was selected as a ECABO Team manager. “This is a good sign. We are working hard to make sure that boxing gets back to its former glory in Nelson Mandela Bay. And, that will only happen if we work together putting more resources to revive amateur boxing,” said Nelson Mandela Bay Amateur Boxing Organisation Chairperson Phakamisa Mfama.
