New lease of life for Stadium HELGA VAN STAADEN

HE Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium received a new lease of life last week.

Not only did the stadium operators, Access Management, receive the green light on Friday from the municipality’s sport, recreation and culture committee for the renewal of its lease, but it was also announced that the Metro will be one of the four host cities for the 2013 Afcon soccer tournament. In addition, Die Burger reported on Monday that rumours abound that the PSL team Maritzburg United is considering moving its home stadium from the Harry Gwala stadium in Pietermaritzburg to the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, if not on a permanent basis, for at least more than the three matches which have already been played in PE this season. Concern was expressed recently about the Metro’s delay in renewing Access Management’s lease, which expires end of June and the effect this will have on the EP Kings Super 15 bid. But on the same day that Access Management received the green light from the Metro, also came the announcement by Fikile Mbalula, Minister of sport and recreation, that the Afcon Cup matches will be played in Mbombela, Port Elizabeth, Durban and Rustenburg. Although the number of games that will be played here will only be announced at a later stage, confirmation has been given that four soccer teams will be accommodated in the city. Maritzburg United While the Metro has not made it a secret that they are looking for a PSL-club to be an anchor tenant of the stadium, metro officials would however not confirm over the weekend whether a contract has in fact been signed with Maritzburg United. Negotiations were however described as being in an “advanced stage”. Maritzburg United was paid R750 000 by the Metro for each of the three matches played in Port Elizabeth this year. According to the municipal manager of the Msunduzi Municipality, Mxolisi Nkosi, the team is only paid R14 000 to play matches in Pietermaritzburg. PSL spokesperson, Altaaf Kazi, said the deadline for clubs to submit their stadiums of choice is 18 May. Farouk Kadodia, chairman of Maritzburg United, confirmed that there was an offer from Nelson Mandela Bay to play more matches in PE. Rehab centre brings new hope to drug survivors ZELDRÉ SWANEPOEL “ONE substance abuser can’t fool another. I believe that former substance abusers are the best people to help others still struggling with addiction.” Mohamed Mayet has just established the Survivors Lifeskills Centre in Korsten - a rehabilitation centre which is the first of its kind in Port Elizabeth. The rehabilitation process includes a full herbal detox, with no prescribed medication. Mayet himself fought drug addiction for many years, and was rehabilitated for a number of years. “I was a multi-millionaire in the 90s, had four beautiful children, a huge house and many cars. Then a major bank went bankrupt and I lost everything. I became involved in drugs and at one point I was homeless for six months.” A friend came to his rescue and helped him to become rehabilitated. He worked at different rehabs in across the country. “While I was there I met many people who came from Port Elizabeth and surrounding areas and realised that there was a definite need for an ‘aftercare’ facility for survivors in PE and educating the parents on how to deal with drug addiction,” said Mayet. The centre, situated at the back of the Ruven Centre in Korsten, provides patients with a three-month programme which starts with a

five-day detox. Thereafter a three-week programme consisting of a Life skill and 12 Steps program, follows in which patients are taught how to deal with cravings, urges, and relationships. Follow-up and ongoing support is provided in the form of weekly support groups. “Our main aim is to assist the survivor in coping with his or her daily tasks and provide him or her with the skills he or she requires in order to overcome the daily challenges they are faced with,” said counsellor Fahldeela Salie. “The Survivors Lifeskills Centre has a medical doctor, registered nurse and psychologist, as well as Christian and Islamic leaders to assist patients.” The centre is currently accommodating 15 out patients, their ages ranging from 15 to 41. A nominal fee is charged, but exceptions can be made after an assessment of the individual, as it is against Mayet’s principles to turn anyone who is serious about sobriety. They do however need the funds to maintain the centre. All those interested in enrolling themselves or their children who struggle with substance abuse, may contact Mohammed Mayet on 0 079 172 1921. The centre appeals for donations, not in monetary form, but items such as foodstuffs, bedding, toiletries, cleaning materials and pre-paid electricity. Community activation campaign launched PE EXPRESS REPORTER ANTI-APARTHEID activist, academic and businesswoman, Dr Mamphela Ramphele, launched the North Star Scenarios – a community activation campaign in the Northern Suburbs, last week. “The North Star Scenarios may well be the response Minister Trevor Manual was hoping for in his call for communities to become their own engines of development and for leadership to come from all sectors of society, as contained in the diagnostic report released by the National Planning Commission late last year,” said Neil Campher, project leader of the North Star Scenarios – a community- and volunteer-driven campaign. The campaign is an initiative of The Northern Areas People’s Development Initiative (NAPDI), a non-profit trust established in 2009 and an independent, non-political organisation with a volunteer network of professionals who through their skills, experiences and influence, aim to give back towards a better community. The North Stars Scenarios Campaign is one of several projects on its progamme of action, in partnership with Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s Centre for Advancement of Nonracialism and Democracy (CANRAD). It focuses on improving the Northern Suburbs corridor which runs from Korsten to Kwanoxolo, comprising 250 000 residents of different races, cultures and even, nationalities, across forty neighborhoods eleven ward councils. The purpose of the campaign,

according to project leader, Neil Campher, is “to ask difficult questions about the future of the northern areas with the aim of communities finding the answers and action steps to address challenges and negative realities.” “Scenarios’ work aims to stimulate discussion across different groups in society about challenges that might be faced in the future. Scenarios are stories about a future time which show different pathways towards this future. “By engaging diverse groups in discussion around the future, possibilities for joint action are opened up. Together people can identify and try to avoid problems and align resources and energies towards a shared and desired future,” Campher explained. The project was endorsed by Clem Sunter, renowned for years in South Africa as the country’s pre-eminent

scenario planner. Sunter was in Port Elizabeth to share his work on possible scenarios for the country, and voiced his support for the North Star Scenarios Process. “People speak about these matters privately amongst themselves, in the hope that someone somewhere will do something about it. They do not realise that they can do something individually and collectively to change the present reality into one that gives rise to a promising future. Napdi was established to make residents realise this and to pool resources within the community that can be used to bring about change,” he added. The process identified the two driving forces that will have the most impact on the future of the Northern Suburbs - economic development and value-based leadership – not only in government and business, but also in the community.

The wheels of change are turning PE EXPRESS REPORTER WEDNESDAY 2 May saw the sendoff of the much-anticipated ABay Wheelchair Wednesday campaign. The 10 participants gathered at the APD Headquarters in Paterson Road for a briefing and a few little surprises that were dished out by the taskmaster and all round “bad guy” Willie Bosch, Fundraising Manager of APD, the initiators of the project. Once the participants were seated in their wheelchairs Bosch moved into gear with his final blow and had participants legs bound together to ensure an authentic wheelchair experience. “It was great to see that each and every participant was prepared to enter into the spirit of the project by accepting the task sheet and all allowing their legs to be bound together,” said Garth van Niekerk Chairman of APD. Reports from participants attested to the many challenges that are pre-

sented to wheelchair users on a daily basis. “Tasks that I as an able bodied person would normally consider to be run-of-the-mill stuff are a lot more challenging in the chair,” said Sean Barnard, CEO of head sponsors ABay Stationers. “Just getting in and out of a vehicle or moving up and down pavements that have not been cut away correctly can be scary,” said Barnard. “The public at large were great but I found everything slowed down tremendously. You can’t move as fast as you are used to when you are in the chair,” commented Brett Muzzell of sponsors Dischem Pharmacy. “My greatest irritation was ablebodied people who are too lazy to walk and who park in bays for the disabled. Shame on you!,” said Andre Olivier, General Manager of Die Burger. After 4 hours in a chair a tired Clifford Ngakane, General Manager of the Boardwalk said, “Getting in and out of my vehicle was a challenge. I now have a new-found respect for people in

wheelchairs!” Today, May 9, sees another 10 participants spending 4 hours in wheelchairs in and around the city. Besides the massive awareness that ABay Wheelchair Wednesday will create for the Disability Sector and the changes that it will bring about insofar as accessibility is concerned, the initiative also has a fundraising component. All funds raised will go towards funding the APD Day Care Centre in Motherwell where APD cares for 29 Children with Disabilities between the ages of 1 and 7. Judy Page performs ‘Page by Page’ at The Little Theatre The Port Elizabeth Musical and Dramatic Society is hosting Judy Page in her Page by Page show at The Little Theatre in Belmont Terrace from May 9 to 12. Page by Page is a musical tapestry of Judy Page’s legendary life with unforgettable songs and hilarious anecdotes. Judy will be accompanied on the piano by Debbie Everard. Judy began her prolific career in South Africa as a band vocalist during the 1960s, later shining in cabaret. In the mid 1970s, Judy broke into musical theatre in the production of From Berlin to Broadway. In 1976 she was cast as the Countess Elsa in The Sound of Music for which she received the first of 5 Dalro nominations. She went on to perform in many musical compilations: Brel, Piaf, Jerome Kern, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Judy Garland and Jerry’s Girls for

which she won the Dalro Award for Best Performance in a musical. Recent musicals include Deon Opperman’s My Fair Lady (Mrs Higgins), for which she won a Naledi Award for Best Supporting Actress and Fiddler on the Roof (Golde). In 2008, Judy played Jeanette, the eccentric piano player, in The Full Monty, for which she won the Naledi Award for Best Comedy Performance and as one of the vultures in Deon Opperman’s Jock of the Bushveld. Most recently, she appeared in the pantomime, Robinson Crusoe – and not to forget her role as the evil Mrs Meers in Thoroughly Modern Millie at Pemads. Performances take place Wednesday to Saturday at 7.30pm. Bookings can be done through Computicket. Tickets cost R65 for the evening performances. Kuga flexes muscles in competitive SUV market decidedly modern on the inside and this was accentuated by the funky metallic orange trims in the Trend test model. But like most modern finishings it’s something that people would either love or hate. There’s plenty of space, yet the layout gives one a compact feel with a high seating position which will definitely curry favour with the lady drivers. Then there are some pretty clever storage solutions featuring a large glove compartment and a big storage space between the front seats. Also very handy for a family vehicle is the storage space under the rear seat cushions. The passengers in the back also have folddown trays for lunch or playtime activities while on the move. But best feature of all, in my opinion, is the Kuga’s split tailgate for easy loading of lightweight items. This way the whole heavy back door doesn’t need to be opened to load a couple of bags. A baby handle on the inside also helps to close the lid again - very nifty for women and shorter people who sometimes have to stand on tiptoe to reach the outside handle. A rear tonneau cover with a “onetouch” function keeps valuables out of sight. Loose items can be tethered using four D-ring tie-down points. The back seat has a 60/40 split and can fold down totally flat for more cargo space.

And a test drive of the Ford Kuga, which is loaded with good handling, comfort and safety features set in an attractive design inside and out, proved quickly that this vehicle is sure to give vehicles in this competitive market, such as the Honda CR-V, VW Tiguan and Chev Captiva, a run for their money.

The Kuga is available in two guises, the Trend and the Titanium. Both

make use of the same engines and automatic gearboxes and it is the trim levels that sets them apart. The Kuga comes standard with ABS with EBD, ESP, EBA and anti-rollover mitigation. It is also fitted with a range of state-of-the-art features including push/start ignition (which does not say PUSH/START on the button but rather POWER), cruise control, Bluetooth with voice control, full leather trim, heated front seats and a power driver’s seat. Additional features on the Titanium specification include 18-inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing wipers, auto-on headlamps, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, dual-zone climate control, privacy glass, panoramic glass roof, height-adjustable front passenger seat and a heated front windscreen.

Ride The South African Kuga is equipped with Ford’s 2.5-litre Duratec turbocharged petrol engine with a five-speed automatic transmission. Both models have an intelligent AWD system for cross-country use. On the normal city roads I found the Kuga’s handling and steering as precise and uncomplicated as driving a much smaller sedan. Despite it being an SUV I found it a breeze to park and the only reason why I often parked it in the quieter side of parking lots, was being scared of other motorists bumping and spoiling this beauty of a vehicle in PE’s notorious wind.

BY NATALIE LE CLUE The three-week gap between races is one dreaded by race fans the world over. Nevertheless, it does afford an opportunity to have a look at what’s made the headlines, so far, in 2012. It started in spectacular fashion down under with a superb win by Jenson Button as McLaren set themselves as the early pace-setters of 2012. One the most notable changes from the previous season was Red Bull Racing’s lack of domination either in qualifying or in the race. Even so, Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber found themselves in solid point scoring positions in all of the first few races. What is important to note after the start of the season is that the RB8 is still a fundamentally quick car. It hasn’t become a slouch overnight; rather the ever-determined McLaren team have finally hit the sweet spot in terms of design and hit the ground running from the

get-go. The Woking based team had started previous campaigns a tad behind the eightball. In 2012 the designers of the MP4-27 raised eyebrows by choosing to steer clear of the preferred step-nose design, proving impressively quick on the track. It led to a consistent rather than spectacular start to the season for the British duo and are definitely in the reckoning for the driver’s title. In contrast the Mercedes team had a bad start to the season with only a single point from the first two grands prix. But in truly dramatic, vintage F1 style, Nico Rosberg burst to the top of the timing sheets with a stellar qualifying race in China, delivering Mercedes’ first race victory since the 1955 Monza GP. Some of their success could be put down to their innovatively-designed double DRS wing. In layman’s terms, the same air that stalls the rear-wing, when DRS is enabled, is channelled around the sides of the engine, through the chassis and exits through the front-wing pillars blowing directly onto the front-wing flaps. This stalls the wing and cuts drag, increasing

Now that the true pace of the Lotus has been unveiled, with a double podium finish in Bahrain, team manager, Eric Boullier, believes victory is just around the corner. Meanwhile, Ferrari’s woes seemed to take a momentary hiatus as Fernando Alonso somehow dragged the F2012 to the top step in Malaysia. In reality, the prancing horse and its stable of top notch personnel are, for the moment, mid-field runners. Nonetheless, the team has invested a lot of hope and expectation in a raft of updates that will be brought to the Spanish GP.

Sunshine Coast Spar Triathlon The Sunshine Coast SPAR off-road triathlon takes place on Saturday, May 19, at Kenton-on-Sea and will be the last swim triathlon of the season. Liberty sponsors Victoria Park’s sport programme VICTORIA Park High School has received a huge boost when Liberty, one of South Africa’s largest Financial Services Providers, announced they would be the sponsor for their sport programme for 2012. “Our learners are fortunate to be able to choose from a wide variety of sporting codes: rugby, soccer, hockey, tennis, athletics, cricket, swimming, netball, squash, golf and equestrian. Nina swims away with medals NINA Smith, a Grade 6 learner at Harvest Christian School, took part in the SA Level 2 Synchronised Swimming Championships in East London during the recent school holidays. She was awarded 4 gold medals in solo, duet, trio and figures, earning her the distinction of being ranked number one in SA in her age group (12-and-under). Nina has shown great consistency and promise since starting synchronised swimming in October 2008. In 2010, she was the SA 10-and-under champion and won gold in figures, solo and duet, resulting in her inclusion in the SA 12-and-under squad. In 2011, Nina was once again ranked top in her age group. She is coached by Moira Norden.

NMMU netball coach drafted for national team FORMER South African netball player and SPAR Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University head coach, Lana Krige, has been appointed coach of the senior national Fastnet team. She takes over from Elize Kotze, who has accepted a temporary contract with the SPAR Protea side until after their tour to Jamaica in June. “It’s just right for me,” said the mother of three who divides her time between the family’s Klipplaat farm and Port Elizabeth. “It’s not as hectic as coaching the national squad but you still get to work with top players.” A veteran of two World Cups and 82 tests, Krige will prepare the Fastnet squad for the World Netball Series tournament in Auckland, New Zealand, at the end of the year. The fast-paced format was developed specifically for this series in 2008 and features six-minute quarters as opposed to the traditional fifteen. Krige likened the game to the T20 version of cricket. “Normal netball rules apply but it’s shorter, with fewer stoppages and much more exciting.” Although the players are generally drawn from the existing national squad, she said Fastnet’s use of rolling substitutions allowed coaches to blood more players at international level.

Record turnout at Spar Women’s Challenge PORT Elizabeth’s beachfront was a sea of orange as a record 12 200 runners set off in the 19th annual SPAR Women’s Challenge from King’s Beach on Saturday morning. While most of the participants – ranging in ages from nine to 90 – took to the streets in the name of fun and charity, there was also some serious racing at the head of affairs. Rene Kalmer, who will be representing South Africa in the marathon at the Olympic Games in London this year, clinched the 10km title, while 13-year-old Simone Weitz, from Johannesburg, took home the 5km crown. Adding to the festive atmosphere was the throng of male participants in the 5km, all in

varying degrees of drag. The main event, the second in SPAR’s fiverace national Grand Prix series, was more serious with two Olympic marathon qualifiers in Kalmer and team-mate Irvette van Blerk getting off to a fast start. Kalmer, racing in the colours of Nedbank Running Club Central Gauteng, built up an early lead, which she maintained throughout to win comfortably in 33:30. Zintle Xiniwe, from Mr Price Western Province, was runner-up in 34.01 with Van Blerk completing the podium in 34.15. Having picked up a hamstring niggle while training, Kalmer called her win “a miracle”. “I haven’t been able to train all week, and even

She played for the Proteas from 1995 until 1999 when she took a four-year break to start a family and began coaching the NMMU team. Golf day at Fish to raise funds for Child Welfare CHILDREN throughout the Eastern Cape will benefit from the annual Fish River Sun Child Welfare Charity golf day, which will be held on Saturday, June 2. “Unfortunately, the economic and social challenges facing the Eastern Cape see demand for our services growing daily,” says Eastern Cape Child Welfare SA Area Manager, Pearl Blecher. “The Fish River Sun Child Welfare golf day gives golfers of all levels an opportunity to play on one of SA’s best courses, knowing that they are at the same time making a difference in the life of a child,” said administration manager, Karen Lee, of the Fish River Sun.
