Muller said issues such as the above are never addressed properly. “The municipality only do ‘patchwork’ , which we cannot afford.” Shane Brown, acting head of the municipality’s safety and security department, said he had sent officials out to investigate the erosion after PE Express phoned him to enquire about it. “My officials have investigated and will be liaising with officials of other departments, such as roads, on how dangerous it is and how the address the situation,” said Brown. With regard to the sewerage problem, Marthie Nel, the Metro’s acting director of communications, said that during the heavy rains experienced over the weekend of July 14 and15, sewer surcharges did occur. “These have subsequently subsided, but during the site inspection earlier today (Monday), seepage was again detected. The problem is being attended to and will be resolved today”.

HE heavy rains of the past few weeks have not only caused sewage polution in the Upper Baakens River, but support structures have been washed away and the soil eroded underneath a part of the Kragga Kamma road – only a few metres away from the new Kragga Kamma Bridge. DA councillors Heinrich Muller (ward 9) and Gustav Rautenbach (ward 8) inspected the Upper Baakens River Valley area near the Mashie Golf Course last Thursday after receiving numerous complaints from residents in the Lorraine, Kabega and Sunridge Park areas about an unbearable stench. According to the councillors, the sewerage problems were reported to the municipality about three weeks ago already but nothing was done about the situation. On inspection the councillors found that a sewerage drain was overflowing in the vicinity where the Baakensriver flows under the Kragga Kamma bridge. At the scene Rautenbach told the PE Express this situation needs to be rectified immediately as it is causing damage to the animal life and nature. Rautenbach said he warned the municipality in 2002 already that the stormwater and sewerage systems will not be able to withstand the increase in development in this area. “Now everytime we experience heavy rains, there are sewage problems. Residents constantly complain that their premises are flooded with sewage water,” said Rautenbach.
Even more concerning was the erosion of the soil underneath the Kragga Kamma Road, which the councillors noted on further inspection of the area. According to Muller, some of the

Die eerste sektor is verlede week gevorm en sluit die volgende strate rondom die Fontein Primêre Skool in: Liebenbergweg, McManus-singel, Martinstraat, Kemdrickstraat, Hislopstraat, De Sales-straat, en Sarona- straat.

Theodor Herzl’s young knitters donate woolly warmth to needy babies WINTER will be that much more colourful and cozy at Thand’usana Babies’ Safe Home in Newton Park, thanks to the blankets and teddies handmade with love by the Theodor Herzl Primary School’s knitting club. The Theodor clickers, some as young as 8, meet regularly to enjoy the soothing fellowship of knitting and churn out bright squares from leftover bits of wool. These are patched together to make up blankets that are perfect for babies or for knee rugs for the elderly. The group made up woollen teddy bears too, especially for the babies of Thand’usana. Rebecca Kilbride, 12, who founded the Theodor Herzl knitting club, said she and her friends loved helping the needy tots. The group has undertaken to collect and donate fresh fruit and vegetables for the little ones too. “Thand’usana means ‘love a baby’ in Xhosa,
and our aim is to provide nurturing and safety to neglected, abandoned or abused babies. We can house up to six desperately needy babies here, up to three years of age, who are brought to us from Childline, the ACCV and social workers at Social Development,” said Lorna Lamerton, coordinator and house mother at the Safe Home. “We are affiliated to the Newton Park Methodist Church and are fortunate to receive a small stipend from the church, but otherwise rely solely on the goodwill of the community. It is wonderful to see the Theodor Herzl children reaching out to help our babies in such a creative way.” Lamerton said that while the home welcomed food and other baby goodies, they were also in dire need of cash donations to pay utility bills and employ staff. A Resourceful man of the people TREVOR Muller works at SAB’s Ibayhi Brewery in Port Elizabeth as a Brewing and Utilities Engineer, which involves him in things like the supply of water, steam, C02 gas and other resources that keep beer production going. Trevor describes the path to his current position as a “long but rewarding process”. He started as a mechanical apprentice and was soon encouraged by his seniors in the business to study part-time. After achieving his B Tech, Trevor continued climbing the corporate ladder and now makes a point of encouraging the employees in his team to grow – whether that be through further higher education, training courses or mentor-
ship programmes. Trevor’s mantra is that if you enjoy your work, you will work well and he gets enormous pleasure from boosting the morale of his colleagues. “When they have a smile on their faces, I know they are working well!” Trevor considers himself an SAB-stalwart, having been with the business for over 15 years. He initially left PE to work in KwaZulu-Natal back in 2003, but was transferred back to the city he now calls his home in 2009. Trevor is today a committed and proud PE man. Besides the many and varied work-related activities he undertakes, Trevor’s passion for the company and its people sees him chairing Ibhayi Brewery’s Sports and Social committee. “Our teams often compete against those of
other industries,” says Trevor. “Although we play socially, we’re quite competitive on the field. Once a game is over, the spirit of competition melts away over a few beers.” Away from work, Trevor spends his weekends helping neighbourhood kids with their High School Mathematics. In fact, his work colleagues, many of whom are also furthering their education, also often call on him for maths-related assistance. “To me, teaching people maths isn’t a chore. I derive such pleasure from seeing people begin to really understand a problem and solve it on their own,” he enthuses. Trevor Muller seems to be able to tackle everything. No wonder his colleagues and his bosses value him so highly.

Trevor Muller, who has been with SAB for 15 years, is a highly respected Brewing and Utilities Engineer at our Ibayhi Brewery in Port Elizabeth. Top teen dance crews go head to head PE EXPRESS REPORTER THE two top teen dance crews for Port Elizabeth will battle it out at the Best Teen Dance Crew Finale presented by Soapbox this Saturday (August 4) at the Moffett on Main Lifestyle Centre. Soapbox is an open mic night for teens that has been giving Port Elizabeth’s teens a platform to showcase their talents since July 2009. The Best Teen Dance Crew competition has seen PE’s top teen dance crews popping and locking their way through three stages of the competition. The audience voted and the top two crews, Dead Silence and Spectrum, were announced in late June. Now they will battle it out to determine who will be claiming the title of Best Teen Dance Crew and the R2 000 cash prize. Judges include resident BBoy Andre Hector, K-Funk Dance Studio’s manager Krystal van Vuuren and local musician Ciza Tha Journalist, but the ultimate decision comes down to audience votes. Performances from a range of talented PE teenagers, including rappers, singers and poets, will adorn the line-up showcasing what PE’s got. There will also be a guest performance from Ciza Tha Journalist the guest judge. The show starts at 7.30pm. Tickets are available at the

MTN Joyous Celebration commemorates Women’s Month in PE MTN Joyous Celebration will be touring along the coastline for two weeks this August, bringing warmth and splendour of song in honour of woman’s month. The energetic musical group will start their tour in Port Elizabeth’s Nangoza Jebe Hall in New Brighton on August 3 and 4. The final leg of the MTN Joyous Celebration tour will culminate in Durban (ICC Arena) on the August 11. Still celebrating 16 years of reverence, the MTN Joyous Celebration Tour 2012 has just presented a scorching, jampacked concert in Sun City. “Our 16th year milestone has been strengthened by our partnership with MTN. Reaching our audiences around the country has been extra special because of our solid foundation with MTN. We really look forward to touching down on both cities and taking it to the next level by honouring our mothers, aunties, sisters and friends. It will definitely be a heartwarming experience showing them respect and love,” the founding member of Joyous Celebration Jabu Hlongwane said. In the spirit of this joyful experience they would be humbled if all the women could come to the shows in their beautiful traditional or church attire to stand out proud and majestic at the shows. “It’s been a phenomenal tour thus far and we look forward to Port Elizabeth and Durban. Our supporters can expect to see us giving it our all, because that is what they have continually been giving to us all these years. This is our way of thanking them,” added Hlongwane. Tickets for the PE shows range from R150 to R250 and are available at Computicket. Lewis Hamilton, HungaroKing THE 2012 Formula 1 season has now run more than half of its course. Eleven races in and still several drivers are in with a shot of walking away with the driver’s crown. Since its introduction in 1986 the Hungarian GP has never been known as one to dish up the most exciting of races. Over the years it’s earned the nickname, ‘Monaco without the barriers’ - essentially because of the lack of overtaking opportunities. Not much has changed in 2012 as the Hungaroring remained one of the most notoriously difficult tracks to overtake on. Qualifying then, would be key. McLaren underlined the progress
they made in Germany with a stellar Saturday performance. Lewis Hamilton breezed to pole as Lotus’s Romain Grosjean surprised with the second fastest time. German GP winner, Fernando Alonso, could only manage sixth place. As the leader of the championship the Ferrari driver wouldn’t have been too displeased to see his closest rival quite some way down the field; second on the points table, Mark Webber could only manage 11th on the grid. The weather veered dramatically in both directions throughout the weekend. Blue skies and scorching temperatures were quickly replaced by thunderstorms and rivers of water running across the track surface on more than
one occasion. Sunday’s race forecast was no easier to read as several possible showers were predicted during some point of the race. Yet, they never materialized; making it a straight fight between McLaren and Lotus. Romain Grosjean’s re-introduction to F1 cannot possibly be going any better. Throughout the opening stint of the race the impressive Frenchman kept the McLaren of Hamilton more than honest and looked almost set for victory. It was the other Lotus of Kimi Raikkonen that would make the real push for victory for the Enstone-based team. A fifth place starting position and a Kers issue off the startline only always had the making of a long, boring afternoon for Raikkonen. But as his overtaking showed in Germany, the Finn is holding onto some special form. He ran the longest opening stint of anyone on

He controlled Sunday’s race to perfection and put in a flawless performance that will do him a world of good ahead of the break. Red Bull has gone from a team that could do no wrong to struggling to stay in touch. And the pressure is starting to tell. A less than calm Sebastian implored the team to get him past the McLaren of Jenson Button, proclaiming himself ‘much faster’ than the Brit. McLaren will take a lot of confidence and momentum into the summer break. Notching up a win before the four- week break is sort of like a rugby team scoring just before the halftime whistle – not quite the death blow, but difficult to ignore the momentum it gives them.

REMEMBERING what it means is almost easier than remembering how to say the name of Suzuki’s first foray into the local sedan market, the Kizashi. Kizashi, meaning “something great is coming”, is obviously not as easy as Polo or Sonic to remember , but test driving one was surely a memorable experience. Very much like its younger sister, the Suzuki Swift (which I test drove shortly after the Kizashi), steers and handles excellently - you almost feel as if you are at one with the car and it leaves you to enjoy the ride rather than thinking about it. Suzuki last year introduced the Kizashi, which is squarely aimed at the family sedan market segment offering family motoring and value for money driving. And it had made such an impression that soon after launch it was chosen as a Car of the Year finalist - quite an achievement even though it didn’t win in the end.
Inside the Kizashi mirrors that of the other Suzukis. It offers comfortable seating for five adults as far as legroom goes. I, however, found the roof a bit low especially with the high seating position, which I prefer. The finish is quite contemporary with perforated leather seats. The boot is also more than adequate, as well as the number of storage compartments and cupholders.
Features Standard features that add to the value for money aspect of the Kizashi are its sunroof, rain-sensing windscreen wipers, electric mirrors, autodimming rearview, tilt and reach adjustable steering with satellite controls, electric windows, central-locking, dual-zone climate control , audio system with a multitude of speakers, electrically adjustable driver’s seat, 18-inch tyres and alloy wheels. In addition there is the key-less entry and
a stop/start button. If you forget your keys in the car, you need not worry about locking the keys in the car. Safety features include airbags, ABS (anti-lock braking system) with EBD (electronic brakeforce distribution), BAS (brake assist system), ESP (electronic stability programme) and parking sensors in the front and back.

Drive The test vehicle was a six-speed manual model. Out on my mom’s taxi route as well as the highways and byways of Port Elizabeth the Kizashi performed very well. Its driving performance, zippy feel and great handling on straights and around corners were

Exterior Here Suzuki have gone for classic sedan styling, contemporary but with nothing that really jumps out to write home about, except three features that impressed me on closer inspection. The Kizashi I test drove was a pearl white colour. I don’t like white cars generally, but this is the most beautiful shade of white I have ever seen. Another goodlooking feature is the two, yes two, exhausts encased in beautifully designed chrome. It certainly gives a sporty edge to an otherwise conservatively-styled sedan. And then the sunroof! For me, and my children, a sunroof is one of the ultimates in stylish driving.

The true glory of sport AMID the pomp and splendour of the 2012 Olympic Games opening ceremony in London last week and the usual wild speculation by government and sports officials of 12 medals or more for Team South Africa (President Jacob Zuma shoots even higher with a goal of 14), it’s a great pity that legal means have been used to upset a sports selection within the team. But there it is. In the equestrian riding events, original selection Paul Hart has been dropped in favour of Alex Peternell, after an appeal to the courts by the latter. Can sport not be left alone to see to its own affairs? And will responsible people not act responsibly and stop making wild predictions? Let’s move on and remember among the many South Africans, who have made us proud at the Games, the feats of two great athletes – one still very much alive, the other laid to rest on November 5 1951, aged 62. Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula and top sports official Gideon Sam, instead of blathering on about the number of medals our team is set to bring home, might have applied their thoughts to payback time for a humble 1996 competitor, Josiah Thugwane, who became the first black competitor from this country to win an Olympic medal, in taking gold in the marathon. Steeped in ancient Greek mythology, the marathon is surely the greatest of all events at the Games. Would it not have been a wonderful gesture to have extended an invitation to Thugwane to accompany the team to London as a special guest; perhaps even a motivator? Is it too late to rectify the matter? Unhappily, the answer
to that is probably “yes”. Ah well, rather let Messrs. Mbalula and Sam continue to bang on about our medal prospects. But first a last look back at SA Olympic glory before moving on to breathtaking events on the rugby field. Did you know that the fastest man alive in 1908, was not yet a man? He was only a kid of 19 when he won the 100m at the Games that year, where else but in London! His name, Reggie Walker. But, my-oh-my, could he run, as he proved in winning the final in 10.8sec. What’s more he wasn’t picked for the original team! His home province, Natal, raised 100 pounds sterling to cover his expenses and in those good old days when sport was sport – and not mucked about by ministers and officials – he was in the team! He took London by storm. Let’s hope his example will inspire more of this spirit of derring-do (desperate valour, says the Oxford) in London over the next few weeks. So . . . what can you say about Keegan Daniel’s Sharks at Newlands last Saturday? They were simply magnificent. Their 26-19 Super Rugby semifinal victory over Stormers was built on rocklike foundations of courage and never-saydie determination. This after having travelled to Brisbane to beat the Reds just the week before. This was a moving team effort. It was also confirmed that the best flyhalf in South Africa is a Frenchman. Who else but Freddie Michalak! Can they possibly make a return trip Down Under and beat the Chiefs in Waikato in the final? It seems unlikely. But for this team, playing the way they have in these last heart-pumping weeks, anything is possible! One thing is certain, South Africans everywhere will be solidly behind them!
