laying in the under 18 Coca-Cola Craven Week is the ultimate achievement for a young rugby player.

So believes Mpho Mbiyozo, rugby player of the EP Kings, who was also selected to represent the Eastern Province at Craven Week some few years ago. Schoolboys from all over the country will know what achieving greatness feels like when they will represent their province in the 49th U18 Coca-Cola Craven Week, which takes place at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth from July 8 to 14. The U18 Coca-Cola Craven Week is widely recognised as the most iconic schoolboy rugby tournament in the world, and also a passage into professional and representative rugby. “The Craven Week is a huge stepping stone for many players and we regard this youth week as the corner stone of rugby. It is also fitting to have this tournament here in the true rugby heartland of South Africa,” Khaya Mayedwa from the South African Rugby Union (SARU) said. Statistics show that 40% of current South African rugby players playing in the Super Rugby series this year hail from the Eastern Cape. After 12 years, the Nelson Mandela Metro will again play host to this annual schoolboy rugby showcase – this time in the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. The tournament was last held in Port Elizabeth back in 2000 at the former Telkom Park. Twenty teams will participate in this year’s U18 Coca-Cola Craven Week – 18 of these teams will represent the various South African provinces and the other two teams will represent Zimbabwe and Namibia. About 30 games will be played during the week, with five games being played per day – all of which will be televised, according to Phillip Joseph, the Vice President of Eastern Province Rugby Union (EPRU).

Parents, scholars, friends and the public are encouraged to show their support for players during the tournament. Ticket prices will cost R50 for a week pass and R20 for a day pass. School children in uniform with a chaperone will be allowed in the NMB Stadium

for free. The Eastern Province will be playing in the main match against the Falcons at 3.30pm on Monday, July 9. , The U18 Coca-Cola Craven Week, which is named after the legendary rugby player, coach and administrator, Dr Danie Craven, has given rise to

William Moffett Expressway – 40 years later ZELDRÉ SWANEPOEL IN 1972 the newly-built William Moffett Expressway was deemed a technological miracle. Today, the burden of being the busiest road in Port Elizabeth, carrying 24 000 vehicles per day, has taken its toll on this road. The William Moffett Expressway connects the North and South of Port Elizabeth across the Baakens River. According to Ward 6 DA Councillor Retief Odendaal, the William Moffett Expressway is under tremendous strain, especially during rainy weather, when various potholes are formed. He says that the condition the road is in, poses a threat to the safety of motorists and can cause substantial damage to vehicles. Apart from the numerous potholes, there is also a risk of sink-

holes forming. “It has become too expensive to tar the road every time a pothole appears, so now they just get filled up over and over again, a process which is costing a lot of money.” He said that the only lasting solution would be to rebuild the road from its foundation. There is, however, no current budget for this, and the council has renovations planned for its 2014-2015 budget only. The current estimated cost of that is between R150 million and R200 million. “I don’t even know if the road will hold that long - if it won’t collapse before 2014. It is way past its design life. In a report which followed an investigation in 2005, it was found that the structural damage to the road needed urgent renovation,” Odendaal said. The expressway has, over the last few years, also developed into a motor mecca, with various car dealerships opening their doors recently. The added business had also caused a significant in-

crease in traffic on the expressway, Odendaal added.

RESIDENTS of the Nelson Mandela Metro will now pay more for all municipal services. The tariff increases of 13% for refuse removal, sanitation, property rates and water came into effect on July 1. There was also a sharp increase in the electricity rates. These are based on a sliding scale that is calculated according to resident’s energy usage. According to Carlé Ritter-Erasmus, the Metro’s acting communications manager, the rate increases are necessary to deliver services and should improve service delivery. Kobus Gerber, chairman of the Ratepayer’s Association, however believes that residents are being exploited at the expense of politics. He said the metro can save millions if they cut unnecessary internal spending, such as political appointments. He gave an example of the chief whip who earns a salary of R3,6 million a year. “The mismanagement of the municipality is placing the consumer under unnessecery pressure. They

are already under enough pressure as it is with the condition of the world economy and high petrol prices, to name a few,” said Gerber. Leon de Villiers, DA caucus leader, said the party was concerned about the metro’s high level of debt. “The rate increase will result in the ratepayer not paying for service delivery, but rather the metro’s debt,” he said. “The metro cannot borrow anymore money and it will take them approximately 20 years to pay off the debt.” The metro is also burdened by unpaid accounts. According to Ritter-Erasmus, the ratepayers owe the metro approximately R1,2 billion. Domestic debt amounts to R900 million, businesses owe R217 million and the government owes the Metro R40 million. De Villiers said the DA was also deeply concerned about the fact that the Metro only budgeted for one month’s cost coverage. “In the case of a crisis, the municipality will only have enough money for 20 days and it is supposed to be three months.” .

Teacher Constance retires after 42 years ZELDRÉ SWANEPOEL TRIOMF Primary School recently said goodbye to one of their beloved teachers, who retired after 42 years in front of the blackboard. Felicity Constance said that she would miss the school and the learners, but was definitely looking forward to retirement and extensive travelling abroad. Constance started teaching in January 1971 at the West End Primary School until June 1976, where after she resigned for three months. She returned to teaching and started at Triomf Primary in August to November 1976. At Triomf she taught Grades 3, 4, 5 and 6.

“I then went to Alpha Primary School where I taught for 6 months, Grade 7 English and Grade 7 Needlework. I came back to Triomf Primary and taught Natural Sciences and Afrikaans for Grade 7 for 10 years. Then I moved between Grades 5 and 7, teaching Afrikaans and Natural Sciences. These are the subjects I taught for the last 20 years.” Highlights of Constance’s teaching career include going on school tours, playing tournaments, and being at helm of the organisation of these events. “The best grade I have taught was definitely the Grade 7 (Std 5) classes, where I could ‘live’ into the subjects I had taught. I thoroughly enjoyed the challenges I had in moulding learners for high school.” She said that the past 10 years in

Grade 5 gave her a break in which she could take things at a slower pace, and see teaching from a different perspective. “This was more challenging in that I had to adapt to a ‘lower’ level, but I, once again, lived into the work and quickly took to the Grade 5 learners. They have given me great pleasure and definitely calmed me down more.” Constance said that she was always strict and firm with the kids but she is grateful that the Lord has granted her grace and patience to have enjoyed teaching for 42 years. “Children have changed; life has changed, but if you remain yourself and strive to uplift the community, you will most certainly enjoy the happiness and success I have experienced for 42 years.”

The most energy-hungry appliance, the geyser is responsible for up to 39% of monthly electricity bills. Consider replacing your geyser with an energy efﬁcient alternative like solar geyser or heat pump.

In the event that you do switch on, keep it energy efﬁcient. We recommend that you use heaters with a built-in thermostat and a short warm up time. Consider if the heat required is to project directionally (like a fan heater or air-conditioner) and ﬁnally, which option will be the safest.

Westering High presents ‘Fame the Musical’ PE EXPRESS REPORTER The same creative team of Westering High School who produced the Showtime award winning production, “Mzansi” in 2008, and “Disco Rocks” in 2010, this year brings you the hit show “Fame the Musical”. Jointly directing this production are Anton Steyn and René Myburg, with Salomie Minnie and Amanda Engelbrecht working together as musical directors. Choreography will be done by the multi award-winning Jerry Fortuin. Although “Fame” had been done by Westering High in 1998, the popularity of the recent remake of the movie prompted them to restage the production. The story revolves around a group of friends studying at the New York School of Performing Arts. They specialize in music,

dance, or acting, and all dream of being famous. It includes hit songs such as the title song, “Fame”, made famous by Irence Cara in the 80’s, and “These are my children”. For the Westering production, the action unfolds at the “Cape Town School of Performing Arts” and slight adjustments to the script, give the show a more South African feel.’ The show will take place from August 1 tot 4 at the PA Blackbeard School Hall at Westering High School. Wednesday and Thursday nights, will be cinema seating, whilst Friday and Saturday, will be cabaret seating, with patrons welcome to bring their own snacks and drinks. All shows will start at 7pm. Lindy’s Hungarian chicken The Hungarian chicken recipe of PE resident, Lindy Isherwood, that will be featured in the July issue of the Woolworths TASTE magazine: Serves 4 to 5 Preparation: 15 minutes Cooking: 45 minutes Ingredients 1½ T Canola Oil 8-10 Chicken thighs (skin on) Sea salt (to taste) Medium-sized onion (peeled and chopped) 1 Clove garlic (finely chopped) 1t Paprika Cayenne pepper – good pinch or to taste 3 Medium tomatoes, skinned and chopped 250 g White mushrooms (halved) 250 mF cream, or to taste 250g Rice noodles or rosmarino, cooked until al dente, for serving Green leaves, for serving Method Heat the oil in a saucepan and brown the chicken pieces on both sides. salt lightly. In the same pan, gently simmer the onion and garlic for 5 minutes. Add a little salt, the spices and tomatoes and simmer fairly briskly for a further 5 minutes. Return the chicken to the pan – skin-side up – and gently simmer with the lid off until the chicken is almost cooked, about 30 minutes. Add the mushrooms and simmer until cooked, about 5 minutes. If there is too much liquid, pour off the excess. Add the cream and heat through.

PORT ELIZABETH – Die twee Oos-Kaapse sportmanne Michael Louwrens (52) en Kevin Paul (20) beplan om die rekords by die Paralimpiese Spele in Londen te laat spat. Hulle is albei vir die Suid-Afrikaanse span gekies wat in Augustus en September vanjaar in Londen aan die spele sal deelneem. Louwrens, ’n NMMU-atleet en voormalige gewigstoot-wêreldrekordhouer, is reeds drie keer vantevore gekies om Suid-Afrika in die Paralimpiese Spele te verteenwoordig. “Om vir die Spele verkies te word, is ’n absolute eer. Michael het hard gewerk en hy verdien weer eens dié voorreg,” het sy trotse afrigter, Kobus van Zyl, Michael Louwrens (52). Foto’s: VERSKAF gesê. Louwrens, ’n parapleeg, het reeds drie Paralimpiese Spele-goue medaljes in die gewigstoot-afdeling agter sy naam. Dié het hy in 1996, 2000 én in 2004 verower. Hy beplan om vanjaar wéér met goud huis toe te kom. “Michael is tans in Frankryk waar hy aan ’n gewigstootbyeenkoms deelneem. Sodra hy terug is, begin ons met die voorbereidingswerk vir die spele in Augustus.” Intussen het Paul, ’n regstudent aan die Nelson Mandela Metropolitaanse Universiteit, nadat hy sy semester-eksamens afgelê het, na Berlyn vertrek vir ’n internasionale swembyeenkoms. Hy het die afgelope Saterdag by dié byeenkoms ook gekwalifiseer vir die 400m vryslag en sal as een van die top-5 vryslagswemmers

in die wêreld deelneem aan die Spele. Hy het reeds gekwalifiseer vir die 50m en 100m vryslag-,100m borslag- en 200m individuele wisselslagitems. Dié swemsensasie het in 2008 ’n goue medalje in die 100 m-borsslag verower en terselfdertyd die wêreldrekord verbeter by die Paralimpiese Spele in Beijing. Sedertdien het hy die rekord weer laat spat en staan dit nou op 01:05:94. Paul het ook in 2009 aan die Paralimpiese Wêreldkampioenskap deelgeneem en in 2010 aan die nasionale kampioenskappe waar hy onderskeidelik goud en silwer verower het. “Die Paralimpiese Spele was my mikpunt en dit is ’n eer om te weet dat ek deel van die span is. Tot nou toe het ek baie hard gewerk en ek dink ek staan ’n redelik goeie kans om weer goud huis toe te bring.” Kevin Paul (20) Paul is sonder ’n linkerborsspier gebore en het ’n korter linkerarm en kleiner linkerhand. Vir hom was een van die beste ervarings van die Spele om met sy rolmodelle bevriend te kon raak. “Swemmers en atlete soos Natalie du Toit, Oscar Pistorius en Ryk Neethling help ’n mens besef daar is meer aan die wêreld as net jou klein hoekie. Hulle herinner my gereeld daaraan dat ’n mens jou omstandighede moet aanvaar – daar is altyd iemand anders wat dit moeiliker as jy het. Om Nelson Mandela te kon ontmoet, was beslis ook een van my hoogtepunte.” In sy vrye tyd speel Paul kitaar en ry hy graag branderplank. Sy raad aan Baaise jongmense is om hul drome na te jaag. “’n Mens moet probeer om die beste ‘jy’ te wees wat daar moontlik kán wees.”

Is ‘Player Power’ the new game? RUGBY? You mean the game invented at Rugby School when William Webb Ellis “picked up the ball and ran”? It isn’t called that anymore. It’s called “Player Power” – at least that’s the way it seems to be lately “in die ou Transvaal”. It’s all rather sad, a fairytale gone rotten. Less than a year ago, the Lions, with Josh Strauss’s teeth in a visible grin in the wild black beard that camouflages most of his face, was holding aloft South Africa’s premier rugby trophy, the golden Currie Cup, after taking a toothless Sharks apart in the 2011 final. An equally wide grin replacing his polished bald-headed scowl, coach John Mitchell looked equally elated. Popular president Kevin de Klerk, who so often raised the Ellis Park customers’ cheers to the level of brassy bellows in his playing days, looked just as chuffed. And why not? His Lions franchise, underperforming yet again at the highest level and under serious threat of being dropped from the elite Super Rugby group by SARU promises of promotion to the EP Kings, had shown how wrong this would be! But were all the characters of this sporting drama hiding something even then? Fast-forward to just a month ago. Yet another nightmare for the Sharks. Ellis Park had become a sea so rough the men in black and white could not control it. By contrast, in the ranks of the Lions, nothing but jubilation. Trouble at Ellis Park? Surely not. But lend an ear. It’s now emerged that Coach Mitchell was asked before kickoff to leave the change-room,

and his game plan for the day tossed out the window. (Maybe you noticed that Mitchell, now wallowing in emerging allegations of abusive behaviour towards players, was no longer wearing his customary frown, but a veritable scowl? If so, now you know why.) It’s all very well being wise after the fact, but the Mitchell saga could have been categorised as a disaster waiting to happen. A similar scenario of player discontent had played itself out at the Western Force before he packed his bags in Perth and headed for the Lions’ den. Even the usually diplomatic Lions president, De Klerk, in announcing Mitchell’s suspension last week before the Lions’ trip to Newlands, used the word “abusive” to describe Mitchell’s treatment of his players. He added diplomatically: “There are certain lines that don’t get crossed in every aspect of life.” A former All Black, Mitchell is a highly respected expert at coaching the game. However, he is also saddled with the reputation of being “a hard-arsed Kiwi who coaches as he played...” Trouble had been brewing for some time at the Lions. Mitchell always called a spade a shovel. Players didn’t like the way he never hesitated to rip into them with offensive language. De Klerk apparently admitted that in his playing days, players shut their mouths – grinned and bore it. At the time of writing, Mitchell was officially classed as “suspended”. He’d been advised by lawyers not to react. It would be surprising if, by the time you read this, Mitchell hasn’t packed and left, as one critic put it, “with a suitcase of cash.”

Local companies set for challenge MICHAEL ZOETMULDER ROUND 2 of the Investec Night Relay takes place tomorrow from 6pm at the North End Lake with over 100 companies set to do battle for supremacy around the Lake. The Investec Night Relay, an initiative of Zports in conjunction with the Mandela Bay Development Agency, is a fun corporate relay running/walking race around the North End Lake and the Stadium precinct, which has received great praise from local businesses for drawing social activity to the Stadium area. Online entries for tomorrowâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s event are still possible till 3pm today; however late entries will be taken at the event on the grassed area between the Lake and the Stadium from 4pm. Teams for the event comprise five runners (run team) or three walkers (walk team) with each team member having to complete a 4.2km lap of the course. Registration is open from 4pm with the race setting off at 6pm in a clockwise direction around the precinct. Algoa FM vibe mobile with Charlton Tobias will be getting everyone into the mood with Race prize giving taking place from 8.30pm. The highlight of the prize giving is the high standard of the lucky draws with over R15 000 in prizes up for grabs. Aiming for gold at Silverstone THERE’S no place like home. For all the new venues and countries introduced to the calendar it is still England that is considered the true spiritual home of Formula 1 racing. It is here that many of the drivers on the grid started their racing careers in lower Formulas, and Silverstone remains one of the few tracks talked about with a sense of nostalgia, prestige and a particular reverence. It is one of Formula 1’s oldest and most challenging venues and even with the changes to its layout, it hasn’t lost any of its magic. Despite the run of different winners having been halted by Fernando Alonso it hasn’t made the result in the ninth round of the championship any easier to predict. However several characteristics, unique to Silverstone, still provides opportunity for quite a few teams. The cool conditions in Northamptonshire will play to the strength of the Mercedes, however it doesn’t seem that the team have kept up with the development race as well as the other frontrunners. Nevertheless, the duo of Rosberg and Schumacher should fancy a good haul of points this weekend. The fact that the circuit was built on a former airfield means the wind also plays a role throughout the weekend. “It can often be quite windy, which can upset the car [balance] quite a lot from day to day and from session to session,” said Marussia’s Timo Glock. It will be nothing unusual to know that tyres will again be at the fore-front this weekend. The layout includes several high speed corners which will put a lot of energy through the tyres; coupled with the abrasiveness of the circuit it will prove to be a much sterner test for the Pirelli tyres than Valencia. If there is such a thing as home advantage, Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton will be hoping it spurs them to great things this week-

end. It’s been a rather patchy season for the Woking-based team who started with victory in Australia. It looked like the MP4-27 was leading the pack but through either mistakes from the team or just an outright lack of pace the team have not been able to take advantage. By having only scored six points since the Bahrain GP, Jenson Button needs a strong showing if he wants to get back into the championship fight. His lack of pace has been mysterious with both the team and JB unable to pinpoint the exact reason for it. In contrast Lewis Hamilton still finds himself within striking distance despite being helped out of the Valencia GP by Pastor Maldonado. For either McLaren driver to be up near the front this weekend the team will have to improve their up-and-down pitstop performances dramatically. Formula 1 isn’t just confined to the track, as the FIA have announced a three-week extension for the formulation of cost cutting measures. The governing body would have hoped to implement cost cutting measures in time for 2013 but it now seems unlikely to get the go-ahead as all teams would have to agree to the amendments. As Red Bull Racing remain opposed to the Resource Restriction Agreement, a consensus is unlikely to be reached. The astronomical cost of competing in Formula 1 is no secret and another major change in regulations is already being planned for 2014. It is exactly these kinds of unilateral changes that force teams to shell out millions of rands by having to start design and development from scratch instead of evolving from one car to the next. Whatever may happen in the boardroom it’s unlikely to have any influence on what has already been a battle royale on the track. As the Olympic Games draw nearer, British sport is on the forefront and Silverstone is unlikely to disappoint.

Sevens in Bay in December SOUTH African rugby fans will see the best Sevens rugby stars in action on 7 and 8 December in the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth following the International Rugby Board’s (IRB) recent announcement of the confirmed dates for the upcoming 2012/13 HSBC Sevens World Series. In another exciting development, the IRB also announced the further expansion of the World Series, with Argentina joining the very popular Series as a 10th venue. Following its inaugural success at the new Eastern Cape-based venue last season, the Nelson Mandela Bay South Africa Sevens will again host Rugby’s Biggest Party, with two days of fast-paced action, top-class match-day entertainment and a music concert on the Friday night featuring some of South Africa’s most popular bands. Every continent now hosts at least one round of the HSBC Sevens World Series with tournaments in Africa (1), Asia (3), Europe (2), Oceania (2), North America (1) and South America (1).
