ESIDENTS of Walmer who are fighting against the erection of a cell phone tower in their suburb, feel so strongly that cell phone towers should not be erected in residential areas, that they have formed a Non-Profit Organisation, the Cell Tower Action Campaign (CTAC), and will be developing an accompanying website to help other metro residents do the same in their suburbs.

According to Tanya Wyatt, Chairperson of the CTAC, it is their intention to help fellow Nelson Mandela Bay residents either to challenge proposed future cell towers should they be planned for “unsafe areas such as areas where there are schools, crèches and homes for the aged or to call for the decommissioning of existing towers in unacceptably unsafe areas such as school grounds”. To this end, they have scheduled a meeting for next week Tuesday (June 12) at 5.30pm at the Clarendon Primary School Sports Pavilion. According to Wyatt, any interested parties are welcome to attend this meeting and in particular parents of school-goers affected by towers. “We feel hopeful that we – as a group – may place ourselves in a position to facilitate a positive change in local government policy around the issue of cell towers (in issues related to density, safety and aesthetics) and thus influence the approach and attitude taken by the cellular industry towards the public,” said Wyatt. THE process of borrowing books from Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s libraries is now being made far easier and quicker for users thanks to the introduction of a self-service kiosk that allows users to issue their own books.

NMBM Assistant Director of Libraries, Bongiwe Chigumbu, said the self-service units are part of an IT infrastructural upgrade of the libraries. “We believe that this system will assist with the efficiency of our libraries. We hope that our users will find it very useful,” she said. Chigumbu said at this stage only seven libraries will have one of the self-help units, but that in future it is planned for all libraries to have one, depending on the availability of funding. Uitenhage library user, Paul De Boer, said he was pleased to be using the self-help unit, and he could see its benefits in ensuring more efficiency in libraries. “This is a really good idea for our libraries, especially for those who do not have the time to hang around and wait to be assisted. It is much better for us as patrons to be able to assist ourselves when we need to check-out books,” he said. The libraries equipped with the self-help unit are Uitenhage Library, Linton Grange Library, New Brighton Library, West End Library, Walmer Library, Main Library and Newton Park Library.

The interactive new technology was launched at seven out of the 22 municipal libraries in the city on Wednesday, May 30. Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is the first municipality in SA to implement the new library system to ensure more efficiency in the libraries. The self-help unit allows borrowers to issue their books and magazines without the assistance of a librarian. The system does not compromise the security of library books as it is directly linked with the electronic library management system. According to the system operators, Trevor Booysen of CSX Customer Services, the new system is expected to increase productivity at libraries as it will allow users to do their own check-out of books. Booysen says that at the moment the system does not make provision for check-in services, but it also gives the user full access to their library accounts to check details such as fines, book return dates, book titles and also allows the user to renew their books without having the book in their possession. “The self-service kiosk does not take over the functions of the librarians, but it creates more time for the librarians to focus on their core function of assisting patrons with information and assistance in the libraries. The safety of books is also not compromised because the books are only desensitised from the alarm system once they are checked out on the system,” he said. Die skuldigbevinding is tans hangende appèl. ’n Engelse dagblad het Maandag berig Mounter is aangekla van aanranding nadat hy glo ’n hawelose man in ’n verlate gebou in Tulastraat, Sentraal

Pupils from St Thomas High School have launched the Winter Project in 2008 to bring warmth to comfort those in need. This project has become part of the Life Orientation syllabus where Grade 8 and 9 learners are encouraged to bring clothing and blankets to school which could earn them up to 30 marks, depending on the items. This year St Thomas has joined forces with the group Diversity that has been donating clothing and food parcels for the past 4 years in various parts of the Nelson Mandela Bay area. Charity golf day for Hannah Goddard BETTIE GILIOMEE THE Urban Sky Trust Foundation is assisting in a Charity Golf Day in aid of 16-month old Hannah Goddard to raise funds for her cochlear implants. The golf day will be held at the Port Elizabeth Golf Club on Tuesday, June 26. Hannah, who was diagnosed with a moderate to severe hearing loss in both ears a few weeks after birth, now has a profound hearing loss in both ears. Her latest results show that she obtains no benefit from her hearing aids anymore and according to an audiologist report, her only chance of hearing is to be fitted with cochlear implants

A lot of firsts at Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees PE EXPRESS REPORTER VISITORS to the annual Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees, held in association with DStv, will also experience a festival of firsts at this year’s festival which will run from Friday, June 29 to Sunday, July 1. For the first time the festival is hosting a “mohair journey”. Designs from The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) and Mode University in Japan’s collaboration projects will be on show, along with other mohair products and live goats in a Mohair South Africa exhibition. Another first is the staging of a dramatic production, “My Naam is Ellen Pakkies,” a riveting story of a mother

from the Cape Flats who killed her Tikaddicted son. Ellen is portrayed by Vinette Ebrahim – known as Charmaine Meintjes in 7de Laan. On the lighter side, Quattro – “an Italian Flavoured Review” will be seen on stage in the Eastern Cape for the first time. Many of the artists appearing on stage will be in the Eastern Cape for the first time this year. Headline acts include Karen Zoid, Snotkop, Arno Carstens, Elvis Blue Valiant Swart, Romanz, Emo Adams, and Chris Chameleon and his band. On the wild side, baby crocodiles make their appearance for the first time in the “Walk on the Wildside” experience, where visitors can also touch snakes, owls and other raptors. “The Addo Elephant National Park display is always a highlight of this attraction,”

said festival director, Jenni Honsbein. Penguins will also be seen inland in Kirkwood for the first time, with the SA Marine Rehabilitation and Education Centre (SAMREC) giving demonstrations and talks on the plight of the endangered African penguin. This year’s Absa Kirkwood Festival includes an expanding agricultural show, which will be used by suppliers to introduce a number of new products, while the car show – the biggest in the Eastern Cape – will include a number of new models. The wheelchairs will be presented at a handover ceremony at the Red Location Museum in New Brighton on June 6. In addition, the proceeds from Wednesday’s event will go to the APD Day Care Centre in Motherwell, which looks after 29 children with disabilities.

SPAR Eastern Cape ended the fifth A-Bay Wheelchair Wednesday in May on a positive note with a donation of 10 wheelchairs to the Association for the Physically Disabled in Nelson Mandela Bay. Six retailers and three distribution centre employees volunteered to join SPAR’s special guest, Paralympic gold medallist Kevin Paul, in spending four hours going about their daily tasks strapped in a wheelchair. Paul, who was born without pectoral muscles on the left side of his body and is not severely disabled, is currently ranked number one in the world in the 100m breaststroke. “I’m involved with people in wheelchairs quite a lot. But to have to sit in one for four hours and actually feel what it’s like is a really humbling experience. You don’t actually understand until you’re in those people’s position.” Paul said he and his helper, swimming coach Brian Elliot, had experienced difficulties with simple activities able-bodied people took for granted – such as finding a table at a coffee shop and using an ATM. “Everything takes a lot longer. There’s not just strain on the person with the disability, but also on the entire family. I think we learnt that today (Wednesday). It gets easier with help, but it’s not an

Keeping pedestrians off private property This week the Property Poser experts address a reader’s concern about preventing pedestrians from crossing her vacant seafront plot. The reader explains that she bought the land a decade ago and initially intended to build on it but has since decided to sell. The problem she faces is that the local residents, mostly fishermen, use a pathway across her land to access the beach, even though there is a public road a short distance away. The reader has checked the title deed and no servitude exists. Her land is unfenced and she has no intention of erecting one as she believes it would look unsightly and that it would soon be damaged in order to gain renewed access to the pathway. The reader’s concern is that a right, claimed by the local authority and residents, may be created by means of prescription if she continues to allow the public to use the path. Continental Milligan vintage trial returns to its roots sets out each day from the Fish River Sun near Port Alfred, and reaches as far as Nanaga just outside Port Elizabeth, as well as Grahamstown and East London.” Indeed, the varying topography of the region will be a key factor on this classic sealed-odometer rally, with the drivers and navigators being kept on their toes due to the undulating terrain and numerous speed changes. No fewer than 35 grand old vintage and veteran cars are entered for the 2012 Continental Milligan, with competitors travelling from as far afield as Cape Town, Kynsna, Durban and Johannesburg. The oldest cars in the field are the 1928 Ford Model A Pickup entered by last year’s winner, Neville Koch, as well as a 1928 Chevrolet National Roadster driven by Barney Marais. Some 19 marques will be represented, including Rolls-Royce, Volvo, MG, Mercedes-Benz, Alfa Romeo, Bentley, Borgward, Humber, Morris, Austin Healey, Lancia and Jaguar. Notably, this is the first year two GSM products have been entered, comprising the 1961 GSM Dart Mk2 and a 1964 GSM Flamingo, driven by Arno van der Westhuizen and Peanuts Fouche respectively. PE EXPRESS REPORTER THE popular annual Continental Milligan Vintage Trial is returning to its roots this year, and takes place from June 10 to 14 in and around the Eastern Cape. This year represents the 43rd running of the historic Milligan, hosted annually by the Eastern Province Veteran Car Club (EPVCC). It is the 13th consecutive year with Continental Tyre SA as the title sponsor. The first Milligan Vintage Trial was a one-day event was held between Port Elizabeth and East London, and took place in 1970 in memory of the late Bill Milligan, founder member of the EPVCC. The modern rendition returns to the same region this year, but it now spans five days, including a day of scrutineering and documentation, followed by four funfilled days on the road. “The 2012 Continental Milligan Vintage Trial will certainly be retracing its history, as the route encompasses many of the scenic roads between Port Elizabeth and East London as used in the 1970 event,” stated Jeff Nel, Clerk of the Course and Chief Organiser of the Milligan. “Competitors will be treated to a stunning, yet challenging route that

the Glassport Motor Company (GSM) in Cape Town between 1958 and 1964. Some of the Milligan’s most esteemed competitors will also be present, including Piet and Poppie Coetzee from Cradock, who have remarkably taken part in all 42 previous editions. They will be competing in a 1969 Mercedes-Benz 250C. Although the oldest competitors are Ulrich Muller at 85 and his 1957 Borgward Isabella TS, classic rallying appeals to all ages, with 20-year-old Michael Dugmore fulfilling the navigating duties alongside his father, Ken, in a 1947 MG TC. The winner of the Continental Milligan Vintage Trial is the team with greatest timing accuracy in maintaining the organiser’s stipulated speed and time allocations throughout each section – while competing with the odometer and speedo completely sealed. Visible and hidden marshals are located throughout the route, verifying each competitor’s times down to the second, and allocating penalty points for being either early or late. The competitive element is given an extra twist with points being scored for questions and clues posted for each section.

Seven’s the charm NATALIE LE CLUE THE Formula 1 fraternity wanders out of Europe and makes its home this weekend at the famed Gilles Villeneuve circuit in Montreal, Canada. The Canadian Grand Prix serves as the seventh round of the 2012 season and just how the cards will fall is truly up in the air. Just a year ago this race endured a two-hour rain delay as the circuit was flooded by a torrential downpour. Once it got underway it stayed true to its reputation of delivering memorable and thrilling races. In 2011 it turned out to be Jenson Button’s day as he came from the back of the field to clinch an unforgettable victory. The weather around these parts always tends to linger on the cooler end of the scale and rain is almost always assured. Given the unpredictability of conditions it is important to get the most out of the prescribed test sessions. The first sector of the track is very much akin to any other street track on the calendar and just as in those cases this is a sector of the lap in which drivers want to steadily build their confidence. Despite six different drivers having already claimed victory this season, there are still a few ‘front running’ drivers who have yet to taste success. McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes’ Michael Schumacher and Lotus’s Kimi Raikkonen all arrive in Canada with a solid chance of taking the grand prize. Then again, so do all the others. But in the hope that the amazing record-breaking streak of winners continues, let’s evaluate what could, possibly, propel either of these three to the top step. Canada is where Lewis Hamilton won his first ever F1 race and also where he broke Red Bull’s run of pole positions in 2010. Hamilton had a surprisingly lacklustre weekend in Monaco and he’ll do himself a big favour by putting it behind him as soon as possible. The McLaren MP4-27 has all the pace it needs to challenge for victory and with Lewis’s new found ability of cajoling the Pirelli tyres it has all the makings of successful combination in Montreal. Michael Schumacher’s pole position in Monte Carlo and the double DRS system on the Mercedes should give him plenty of confidence when qualifying rolls around. Being the fastest guy in Saturday quali has given Schumi an immense and very visceral boost. He didn’t quite win the Monaco GP as he predicted but the conviction he showed is enough to know that the multiple champ means serious business. Mercedes may not have solved their tyre wear issue completely but they’ve been heading in the right direction in recent races and given Schumacher’s performance at last year’s rain hit Canadian GP he’s well on course to that elusive podium. Hoping to stand in both Hamilton and Schumacher’s way will be Kimi Raikkonen. The Lotus has shown good traction out of

slower corners and is no slouch in a straight-line. What could potentially harm the E20’s performance are the cooler temperatures. The Pirelli tyres in 2012 are so peculiar that the optimal operating temperature can vary, vastly, from team to team. In the case of the Lotus its prodigious pace in Bahrain and Spain was a direct result of the high track temperature. The team and Raikkonen will however need to have a perfect weekend if the Finn is going to lay claim to the twenty-five points. Lotus’s calls on strategy and tardy pitstops have been their main Achilles heel. However good these three drivers’ chances may be, there are several others who will undoubtedly be in a position to fight for victory. Don’t be surprised if more than one front running driver rolls the dice and chooses to save some tyres in qualifying. The Gilles Villeneuve circuit, together with DRS, is conducive to overtaking and it’s been proven repeatedly that fresh rubber on race day is the ultimate trump card. The stats already prove that 2012 has all the hallmarks of a classic season. So closely matched is the competition, that one slight mistake could be the difference between sitting pretty in the championship table and plummeting down the ranks. Which driver will lady luck favour in Canada?

ENTRIES for The Nelson Mandela Bay Urban Run opened last Friday with over 200 entries taken on the first day. The 2012 Urban Run takes place on Sunday, September 16, and will consist of a fun 10.5km urban obstacle run through the Port Elizabeth CBD. The event is sponsored by the Herald and the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA). The 2012 Urban Run route will take participants through the heart of the CBD where they can expect to be delayed by tyres, drain pipes, stairs, cars, containers and other urban obstacles as they get dirty tackling the city for charity. Working closely with the Scouts of Nelson Mandela Bay, the Urban Run promises to offer a wonderful spectacle for the city as some of the most amazing obstacles are conceived and constructed by our local Scouts. The Urban Run is a unique running event which is structured to appeal to the philanthropist in each of us and following the success of last year’s event, which raised over R40 000 for local charity, it is hoped that this year’s event will raise over R100 000 for this year’s nominated charities. The local branch of the Childhood Cancer Foun-

dation South Africa (CHOC) will be the primary benefactor of the Urban Run with the Coega Door of Hope Children’s Home and the Nelson Mandela Bay Scouts also being included this year. Hats off to levelheaded Du Preez MICHAEL SHAFTO THERE WILL be other thoughts on this, no doubt – but you have to take your hat off to Fourie du Preez for pulling out of the Springbok mix for the first rugby test against England in Durban on Saturday. Impulsive as new coach, Heyneke Meyer, seemed to be in bowing to persistent media pressure concerning his choice of Du Preez as his scrumhalf for the three-test series, the player himself – generally regarded as the kingpin of scrumhalves at last year’s World Cup – apparently had the good sense to back-off. Initially it was thought the former Bulls stalwart would take over the captaincy as well. He and Meyer had clearly had talks and everything seemed cut and dried, despite vociferous misgivings of several experts including former Bok coach, Nick Mallett. It seems likely now this was one of the factors in pulling Du Preez up short. Inside information is that player and coach met again late last week, and Du Preez, for several cogent reasons, did an abrupt about-turn. Mallett and other regular rugby pundits had been quick to point out that Du Preez, fine player though he still may be, would not be up to the pace and physicality of the tests and the Four Nations tournament to follow, his being required in Japan to turn out for his club, Suntory, only every second week. His level of fitness, they argued, simply wouldn’t be up to scratch. Equally, if not more important, were issues regarding insurance with his Japanese club. known better than anyone what an outstanding young player he was handing the scrumhalf baton to. So hats off to the 30-year-old for his mature, thinking attitude. As is right and proper, if it hasn’t happened already by the time you read this, Jean de Villiers will be charged with the captaincy, and Pierre Spies will lead the pack. However, surprises didn’t end with the “Du Preez omitted” scenario. Not by half. A major shock and one that later may be regretted – is no place could be found for open-side flank and fetcher, Heinrich Brussow. But Meyer is clearly of the belief that more robust players who make a greater impact in the numerous collisions of the present day, are ultimately of more value. The inclusion of the likes of Bulls’ Jacques Potgieter and Sharks’ Willem Alberts are testimony enough to this belief. Also the coach no doubt feels that uncompromising ball-carrying hookers such as Bismarck du Plessis, Adriaan Strauss and Chilliboy Ralepelle are contributing increasingly to this facet of play in the loose. Meyer is probably right in his assessment of the game, especially at this ultimate level, becoming increasingly dominated by bigger men. One player for whom one feels particularly disappointed, however, is the nimble Gio Aplon. He is so quick, so multi-skilled. But his chance may yet come. Whatever Meyer’s thoughts on the test XV’s final makeup, with the advantage of home-ground and conditions, it should be more than a match for England. The present contingent of 32 contains 15 of last year’s World Cup squad, nine survivors of the winning 2007 team in France, and a total of seven have played in more than 40 tests, led by Habana with 74 caps.

Wildside Dive Fest at Noordhoek in June The annual Wildside Dive Festival will be held from June 15 to 17 June at the Noordhoek Skiboat Club, promising fun for not only diving enthusiasts but also the whole family. Started by a small group of enthusiastic divers keen on sharing the delights of local dive sites, the Wildside Divefest, which is in its 14th year, has grown from a handful of dives done off fishing boats, with minimal support and few sponsors, to a huge event attracting hundreds of divers from all over the country and big sponsor-

ships from industry leaders. Since its inception the event has had a close association with the National Sea Rescue Institute, which is their main benefactor. According to Dive festival co-ordinator, Glenton Kendrick, what makes the dive festival even more special is the fact that everyone involved, from skippers, beach crews, organizers and dive masters, do not receive any remuneration for the time and effort they put into the event. In 2011, despite some bad weather and high seas which limited the dives, they still raised enough cash from dive sales, raffles, sponsors,
