drive to get one of the city’s main attractions up and running again. Chuma Myoli of the MBDA said the viability study would be done over a period of approximately six months.

“We received money from the department of economic development and environmental affairs to conduct the study, which will cost R800 000.” The Apple Express left the Humewood station for the last time on December 29, 2010, before it grounded to a halt due to a lack of funds. Safety at some of the stations along the route was also questioned at the time. Myoli said the safety aspect will most certainly be addressed, should an operator be appointed to run the train. According to Nerina Skuy, chairperson of the Heritage Railway Society of South Africa, the MBDA had not approached the society or the section 21 company that managed the train, before the viability study was requested. She said they were very happy that the MBDA was taking the initiative to see if the train could run again. “It is, however, unclear why another viability study has to be conducted.” She said two such studies had already been done and both were conclusive in finding that the Apple Express could indeed be run profitably. The steam engine and trucks are in safekeeping with the society. The narrow gauge line runs over the highest narrow gauge bridge at Van Stadens.

Trees needle residents in Lorraine ANNA PAUW TRADITIONALLY pine trees conjure up images of Christmas and festivities, but for residents in Verdun Road in PE, four tall pine trees are nothing but an expense-creating menace. According to one of the residents living close to the corner of Vitry and Verdun Roads –- where the four trees stand – these alien trees have become an unbearable bone of contention to the people living in the shadows. Residents are now demanding that these trees be felled and have put such a request forward to the municipality. “Pine needles are absolutely everywhere. I have to clean the garden every single day,” said the resident who prefers to remain anonymous. He told PE Express that if left for a few days, a dense mat of pine needles form on the lawn. “Due to its high acidity, any other vegetation the pine needles land on eventually withers and dies. When they fall in the nooks and crannies of motor vehicles, rust sets in in almost no time.” According to the resident, apart from the needles blowing into the house, creatingamess,theyalsoblowintothepool,creating tremendous extra expenses. “The needles go through the filtering system and lands up in the filter sand, resulting in it having to be replaced every two months.” He said he had already spoken to the municipality about the problem, but to no avail. “Many of the residents in the area share my sentiments and also want the trees to be chopped down.” According to him the acidity level of the pool is extremely high, which makes pool maintenance difficult and expensive. Councillor Gustav Rautenbach, in whose ward Lorraine falls, said to PE Express it is always sad to chop down any tree. “These trees have been standing there for hundreds of years.” He said the municipality is never

Collegiate and Grey stage ‘The King and I’ PE EXPRESS REPORTER The Collegiate and Grey Schools are proud to present the highly-entertaining Rodgers and Hammerstein stage production of The King and I. The show will be staged at the Opera House and there will be six performances from March 13 to 17. This production is a first of its nature with Collegiate and Grey joining forces by combining all four schools, both junior and senior, in a single musical. Having such a large cast means that the production will showcase a talented cast of actors,

singers and dancers from the four schools. Leading the cast as the King is Douglas Smith from Grey High School with Nicole Johnson from Collegiate High School as Anna Leonowens. They are joined by Amy Annear, who has been involved on stage from an early age, and Devin Stickells who will portray the romantic leads of Tuptim and Lun Tha respectively, as well as Danielle Carr as Lady Thiang, Seve Chadford as The Kralhome, Shawn Sankey as Sir Edward Ramsey and Jason Herrington as Prince Chululongkorn. James van der Merwe, who was recently on stage in the Gilbert and Sullivan Production of Fiela’s Child written by Ian von Memerty,

will play Louis Leonowens, Anna’s young son. Featured dancers include Robynne Williams as Eliza and Andrew Hyde portraying the role of King Simon of Legree. The orchestra, including a full strings section, will be under the baton of acclaimed musical director, Shawn Lyon, and the show is directed by Simon Stickells. The choreography is handled by Siobhan Day while Roelien Taylor is responsible for dressing the colourful cast. The curtain rises at 7 pm from the Tuesday through to the Saturday and there will be a Saturday matinee starting at 2pm. According to Linda-Louise Swain of Animal Anti-Cruelty, she received a call from Lili Flax of the Interact Group. “She and the group asked if they could come and interact and help with some of our animals. They had also collected R1000 in cash for the Animal Anti-Cruelty League�. Swain said they decided to visit their Cat Foster Mom, Magda Spamer’s home. “She has four of our dogs and

over 100 cats and kittens for all the different societies. The children helped to bottle-feed very young kittens that had been dumped in a box on Magda’s doorstep – just about a weekly occurrence for herâ€?. Ashe said the children also played with the other cats, washed the four dogs and definitely gave them a run for their money. “They helped to feed all the animals and to spray catnip on toys, to the delight of all the cats!â€? Port Elizabeth’s skeptics meet THE Farlex Dictionary describes a skeptic as a person who habitually doubts the authenticity of accepted beliefs. Self-confessed skeptic, Gerrit Penning of Port Elizabeth, has taken the initiative to gather like-minded people in the metro.

Penning said a need was identified in PE for a social forum where rationalists and critical thinkers could meet. According to him, like-minded individuals are enthusiastic about questioning of claims frequently taken for granted by society and the debunking of myths and urban legends alike. Penning said a typical club meeting would involve discussions about a pre-selected topic like the conspiracy theory or around ques-

tions like, “Is morality absolute or relative?”. He said discussions are kept informal and unstructured, as to maintain a social atmosphere and afford all attendees an opportunity to share their opinions. Currently the group has about 10 members, varying in age from 20 to 50. The skeptics club is based on the popular UK concept, Skeptics in the Pub. Penning said there are other “skeptic” clubs in major South Africa cities and around the world. PE’s skeptics will have its next event tomorrow at 7pm at The Meditaranean Restaurant in Humewood. Ironically, there could be nothing more impractical than this practical vehicle when you have two kids to cart around – with the oldest at that age where it would be undignified to sit in the back, and the youngest so little she

Interior The cabin is surprisingly spacious. As the test vehicle was not equipped with a canopy, I was wondering how I was going to cart my grocery shopping around, but was surprised how much I could fit in behind the two seats. The two separate seats fold down at the pull of a tab. The dashboard is simple and uncluttered and the instrumentpanel with odomoter and trip info, easy on the eye. Despite the four cupholders already mentioned, there are also plenty of clever storage compartments.

Ride Apart from being a little bit noisier than a car, it rides just like a car. It is zippy and responds quickly to commands and offers a very comfortable ride in town and at speed on the highway. The handling is slightly bumpy as one would expect from an unloaded load carrier, but even on my normal route marked by speed bumps it was not too bouncy. The gear change and clutch are easy on the arm and calf. In short, the Chev Utility can be described as a workhorse and definitely not a donkey, has function with form, and it should be quite high up on bakkie enthusiasts’ shopping lists. .

WHAT happens in a rugby household when husband gets a raging thirst for a cup o’ tea midway through the first half of a Super Rugby match in Joburg? Minor chaos, that’s what! Returning to his seat, husband spots scrums have become that abomination called “uncontested”. Because the visiting Hurricanes have a skinny No. 17 in the front row, he presumes the visitors have suffered a front row injury. It takes approximately 2 min 13 sec for his kettle to boil and the tea to be made, and in that time husband also misses the two Lions props, with initials of unfortunate similarity – JC Janse van Rensberg and CJ van der Linde – commiserating with one another on the bench for the wounded. This, of course, causes him completely to jump to the wrong conclusion. He believes the Kiwis are missing a prop – that’s why they’re playing lightweight No. 17 in the front row. But that’s against the law, he thinks, until the penny finally drops as the camera once more swings to JC and CJ comparing injuries – and at last he gets it straight! By and large, however, it was a fine game with the visitors looking that little bit hungrier, and taking home the spoils 30-28. Kiwi coach John Mitchell needs somehow to inject his players with greater urgency, particularly at the breakdown. Indeed all our teams could take a lesson from the Kiwis in this department.

What of the totally out-of-character uncontested scrum? Why not a lineout on the left or right touchline, depending on where the offence took place? Other thoughts on this second week of Super Rugby: generally speaking the Kiwi and Australian teams are taking a more exciting route than their more conservative South African cousins. Add to them a string of veteran test-class backs, while forwards old and new abound. So there’s plenty of material for tailor Meyer to design a fashionable, yet durably effective, suit. Against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein, despite Hougaard’s red card (a timely wake-up call, imagine the consequences in a test), the Bulls showed how effective their kick-and-chase game, plus the slow death of unforgiving power play at forward, can be. By comparison, the Sharks’ 15-12 defeat by Stormers at Newlands, was a relatively tame affair. On turf of a somewhat different texture, congrats to the Proteas for their 3-0 ODI success against the Kiwis.

Who is who in F1: We look at Lotus and Sahara Force India a two-year sabbatical. A stint in WRC and NASCAR has returned a refreshed Raikkonen to F1; one that’s willing to ring the best out of the new Lotus E20. Already a proven champion and very quick racing driver, Raikkonen will undoubtedly go about his business with as little fuss as possible. If anyone is hoping for a surprise or two from the Iceman you may not have to wait long at all. Romain Grosjean gets a second bite at the F1 cherry with a return to the top echelon of racing. The French driver and former GP2 champ is in the prime position to underline his racing credentials and to prove that he has matured since his last stint in F1.

Celebrities aplenty at golf day for aged CELEBTRITIES will once again grace the lawns of the Humewood Golf Club when the 14th Celebrity Golf Classic hosted by Algoa Bay Council for the Aged will be held on March 15. Celebrities who will be swinging to raise funds for the elderly are Mr South Africa 2010, Denver Burns, local comedian Gino Fabbri, former SA Rugby players Breyton Paulse, Rob Louw, Robbi Kempson, De Wet Barry and Danie Gerber, and SA Boxing great Kallie Knoetze.

Roxy Louw, SA Model and surfer, and several beautiful ladies will add glamour to the event. SA Sunshine Tour Golf PRO’s Titch Moore and Francois van Vuuren will host a Mulligan with ice cold cocktails on the 18th. Gino Fabbri will entertain with a comedy show at the prize giving event.
