Humewood promenade to be upgraded MONIQUE BASSON THE Humewood Promenade will undergo a major infrastructure and aesthetic transformation in weeks to come. At a cost of R7-million, this muchneeded upgrade will boast a new look for the beachfront from McArthur Baths to Happy Valley and with the basic assessment well on track it is estimated that work will get underway in approximately four weeks. According to DA Ward 2 Council-

lor, Dean Biddulph, who has been rallying for the upgrade for the past three years, recent ocean surges and unusual wave activity slamming into the promenade wall, have caused extensive structural damage. “The force of the ocean damaged part of the infrastructure and there are fears that the promenade and a part of Marine Drive will collapse in time to come. Therefore this upgrade is of vital importance,” said Biddulph. “The project will see the construction of a sea wall by creating a box under the overhang which will be

pumped full of sand and completely sealed off. “Not only will this improve the infrastructure, but it will also solve the problem of vagrants who sleep there and various criminal activities that tend to have its origin there.” The top structure of the promenade, including the concrete balustrades and staircases, will also undergo a facelift to make the overall look more appealing. “Also on my list of things that need to be done is the refurbishment of the Pier, but that will only be realised next year,” said Biddulph.

What is Metro doing with rates money? TO read that the Metro has no money to keep this city clean and tidy is worrying indeed. What do we pay rates for and where does the money go? The verges in our neighbourhood are full of weeds, grass and rubbish. We never see anyone cleaning the verges anymore. If we continue this way we will be

in a sorry state. We have just visited the Western Cape and it is like another country there. Neat and clean and everything is tidy. This city is on a slippery slide to becoming a real eyesore. There is more to PE than the beachfront.

Enter King and Queen of PE to star on Bay TV THE Next King and Queen of Port Elizabeth to reign in 2012 are being sought and not only will the winners be crowned, but two participants will also get the opportunity to star in a promotional role on Bay TV. According to organiser, Jackie Serfontein, the King and Queen of Port Elizabeth competition is a beauty pageant, which will be held on March 31 and will be broadcast on Bay TV. Castings on Saturday for Extreme Talent EXTREME Models is searching for talent that goes beyond the modelling scene, and talented dancers, singers, musicians and other performers are encouraged to enter their Extreme Talent competition. The competition will run over a few months to find the best talent in PE. Castings were held in Moffett on Main Shopping Centre last Saturday with the next casting scheduled for this Saturday (February 11) at 9am at Moffett on Main.

According to organiser Veruschka Barnard, the winner will walk away with R10 000 cash, clothing, products and equipment. “Ten percent of the earnings will also go towards the school, university or charity of the winner’s choice,” said Veruschka. The couple, Rob and Tammy Foote, so beautifully restored this two-bedroomed house in Ricmond Hill with a budget of less than R21 000 and within only two months, that it was announced as winner of the Tuis/Home national Fixed with Flair competition. It can be seen in this month’s edition of the magazine. They are renting this house from Rob’s mother. “The house was like a canvas which held limitless potential,” said Tammy. “We decided to strip to house until it was almost just the shell standing there.

The new floor coverings, original cupboards, tiling and much more, impressed the Footes’ friends so much that they encouraged them to enter for the competition. “One of the requirements was that we had to do at least 70% of the work ourselves and we did almost everything on our own,” said Tammy. The house was named in the top 20 after which readers could vote and so the house landed in the top 3. “We flew to Cape Town and on the gala evening were announced the overall winner!” Their prize included, amongst others, gift vouchers to the value of R25 000 from Timber City and Penny Pinchers. With this money they are going to build a wooden deck with a seaview and convert the second bedroom into a nursery. Tammy is five months’ pregnant. Before starting with the renovation, the house was valued at R490 000. A recent valuation estimated the house to be worth R650 000.

Volgens Lincoln Lee Jansen, by wie die idee posgevat het, is lees die basis tot die begrip van leer. “Leerders wat in gr. 5 is wat nie kan lees nie, is ’n geweldige groot probleem en daarom moet ons hulp kry om sulke gevalle te kan identifiseer,” het hy gesê. Jansen het die hulp van dr. Ah Hing, ’n dosent in remediërende onderwys aan die Nelson Mandela Metropolitaanse Universiteit (NMMU), ingeroep om onderwysers te help met die opleiding in leesterapie. Hing

het ingestem om elke Donderdag na ure ’n klas van ’n uur en ’n half aan te bied. “Die program fokus op die ontleding en identifisering van só ’n geval, asook die nodige stappe en bystand wat nodig sal wees,” het Hing verduidelik. Jansen was self een van haar studente. “Ons doen die kursus met die hoop om van ons leerders te kan help, aangesien baie van hulle nie finansieel sterk genoeg is om leesterapie te kan bekostig nie,” het Gloria Loggenberg, die skoolhoof, gesê. Al die onderwysers aan die skool ontvang dié opleiding. Hing sien dié program ook as ’n manier om uit te reik na die gemeenskap, en het ander skole aangemoedig om dieselfde te doen.

THIS week the Property Poser panel considers a boundary wall problem with a few twists. About seven years ago a reader purchased a unit in a complex. She explains that her property lies adjacent to the boundary wall enclosing the entire development and a small river runs just beyond that. For about five of the seven years she has lived there, the local municipality cleaned up the riverbanks and secured the area with sandbags whenever there were heavy rains. When the owners of the properties adjacent to the boundary wall requested that the municipality do more extensive work to protect their properties, all aid suddenly stopped. The reason given was that the property over

which the river runs belongs to a local church and is therefore not municipal property after all. Upon investigation, the reader also discovered that the wall is not actually built as indicated on the approved building plan. In fact, whereas the wall is currently about 12 metres from her house, it should only be three metres away. In effect, the reader’s back garden has suddenly shrunk by three quarters of its original size. However, when she purchased the property, she was clearly under the impression that the boundary wall was in the correct position. To make matters worse, the wall is falling apart and the reader has therefore decided to erect a new one in the correct place. She wants to know who

What does the new F1 season hold – Who nose? ance throughout the season. With regard to Force India’s young line-up, Deputy team Principal Bob Fernley said: “I don’t think we are taking a gamble. Driver succession is important to us. I think outside of, or maybe including, the top four, we’ve got one of the most exciting driver line-ups, so I’m not worried at all.”

Kimi Raïkönen, Fernando Alonso, Paul di Resta and Jenson Button have all shared the same experience during the last few days – all these drivers and their respective team mates saw their 2012 challengers unveiled to the public for the first time. The 2012 Formula 1 season is well and truly underway with no fewer than three teams launching their respective cars all in one week. The new regulations for this season haven’t quite resulted in the most beautiful F1 cars for some teams…who are we kidding? They are utterly bizarre-looking machines. Thankfully, there is one reprieve.

McLaren Mercedes – MP4-27 There are several teams, including Red Bull Racing, who have yet to unveil their challengers; but it’s hard to imagine that any of the remaining contenders’ cars will be quite as beautiful and striking as the gorgeous silver arrow that McLaren unwrapped at their team head-quarters in Woking. The reveal of the car, with the help of race drivers Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton, was streamed live from McLaren’s website to all who were interested. The expected ‘platypus’ styled nose was nowhere in sight. In its place was a sweeping arc of silver bodywork. The designers have also foregone the L-shaped sidepods of 2011 car and have opted for a more rectangular pod for 2012.

Ferrari – F2012 The Ferrari F2012, as its known, looks mostly like an evolvement of the F150 of last year. If it is possible the rear-end of the Ferrari looks even more compact that its predecessor but the front suspension is an area where the Ferrari designers have taken the most risk. For the first time since the 2001 Minardi, of which Fernando Alonso was the driver, Ferrari has opted for a front pull-rod suspension. One of the major advantages of such a radical design is that the suspension rockers, now mounted inside the chassis, can be placed lower; therefore increasing the centre of gravity. Given that all the elements of the front suspension are horizontally aligned, it will provide some aerodynamic benefit. Four seasons have passed since the Scuderia last tasted championship glory and the pressure is on at Maranello.

With the exception of the beautiful McLaren MP4-27, most of this year’s F1 cars, as expected, are sporting some kind of ‘platypus’ style nose. In the case of Lotus’ E20 it’s no different from, but slightly more refined than we have seen from Ferrari and Caterham. Despite the design looking somewhat conventional, Lotus’ lead driver, Kimi Raïkönen believes that the team are able to make gains. “I think these people know how to build a good car, and even the biggest teams cannot produce a winning car every year. They are very capable people and they have a good feeling about things and they’re pushing hard so hopefully we will get good results,” said Raïkönen during the launch of the E20.

EXCITEMENT is rising in Nelson Mandela Bay ahead of the 88th River Mile on Sunday, February 19. Ranked as one of the top 10 oldest swimming events in the world, the River Mile started in Redhouse in January 1924 and has taken place annually since then with the exception of the 5 waryears in the early ‘40’s and the 1971 floods. Sadly the event is no longer swum in the Swartkops River as years of pollution and waste matter from metro pump stations and local businesses have been allowed to pollute the river to such levels that any form of swimming there is now considered hazardous to one’s health. In 2009 the River Mile was relocated to the riverside village of Cannonville on the Sundays River and Africa’s oldest open water swimming event was retained. The venue lends itself well to the event with an expansive open area at the slipway which transforms itself into an outdoor fair With no entry fee into the area, participants and spectators will enjoy the numerous craft stalls, vendors, a Castle Lite Beer Garden and a kids’ entertainment area managed by the Rotary Club of PE Sunrise. Festivities kick off at 8am with a 5km fun trail run, followed by the Discovery team and individual Off-Road Triathlon (500m swim, 15km MTB, 5km trail run) before the water events at 11.30am. With plenty to do for the kids, this is a must-do family outing. For any kids 12-years-and-under who are capable of swimming just 50m, the Stormforce kids’ races across the river race is a great confidence booster. Medals, lucky draw prizes and a personalised finish line photograph will keep the kids amped for weeks and keener than ever to tackle the Ironkids event in April. For the Mile swimmers, whether you’re an Ironman who prefers your wetsuit, a disabled athlete or just a social swimmer keen to grab the

Round 9 of Ocean Series on Sunday This Sunday’s Weekend Post Ocean Racing Series at Hobie Beach will offer swimmers the last opportunity to prepare for the SPAR Redhouse River Mile and should see some stiff competition between the Jones siblings, Jonathan Roux and other leading EP swimmers as the mental preparation begins for the River Mile. The Dis-Chem swims this week will be over the 1km and 3km distances, with the 1km ocean swim being easily comparable to the River Mile tide-assisted race the following Sunday. On the beach, runners and walkers will be looking forward to another Varsity College 5km effort after their 3-week break, whilst the kids will be excited to be back on the beach for the Kingfisher FM 1km Beach Run/Walk and another stab at the packed lucky draw table. Black magic alone won’t do it

WHAT the hell – this isn’t going to be popular hereabouts, no matter which way it’s spun. But we might as well get it done. Dusted, too, while we’re about it. There’s this conception that the Eastern Cape is the cradle of black rugby, and that with this muscle the Southern Kings, allowed to join the Super Rugby community, could make a huge difference to SA rugby as a whole. To a degree that’s correct. What’s not so accurate is the fairytale that if/when the Kings are admitted to the elite competition, this franchise will transform, through this injection of black magic, SA rugby into a new formidable force. Let’s get one thing clear, none of what follows is inspired by racism: only by straight-up common sense. Yes, of course, the growth of black rugby is important and must be consistently encouraged. But ask yourself this: why are there so few white faces in Bafana Bafana ranks? The answer surely is that blacks in our country are so much better players than their white counterparts; that the black/coloured community is so much larger; and that so many of them choose to play soccer above rugby. There’s no denying any of that, is there? So now to the nitty-gritty.

Having made the somewhat rash promise that Southern Kings would be playing Super Rugby by 2013, how are SARU boss, Oregan Hoskins, and his cohorts going to achieve this aim? Problem No. 1 is while Hoskins says it’s a done deal, the ruling body SANZAR’s CEO, Greg Peters of Australia, won’t have it. There’ll be no sixteenth team, he says. Here at home SARU must be told there’s no way that any one of the Lions, Sharks, Stormers, Bulls or Cheetahs can be dropped to make way for Kings, who have yet to win the B section of the Currie Cup! There’s also no way two of the above can be combined to make way for Kings as SA’s fifth member of the elite tournament. It’s been tried before with disastrous results. Nor can any of the above be sacrificed on the altar of a promotion-relegation solution whereby the last team on the Currie Cup log at the end of the 2012 season be dropped to accommodate the Kings. It’s amazing such a gutless suggestion has ever arisen. On the other hand, being easily the dominant commercial partner of the SANZAR alliance, SARU must surely have the muscle to push through a resolution to the Kings’ conundrum. After all, what are mates for? Didn’t we help with the establishment of Western Force and the Melbourne Rebels? Hey, mate, what about some quid pro quo? What happens thereafter? Certainly black magic alone won’t do the trick. But EP rugby has a proud history, and everyone in this fraternity should knuckle down and do their bit. At first, as the Force and the Rebels soon found, it will be exceedingly tough. But gradually as rugby people of all shades – colour really is irrelevant – pull together, hopefully they will find the Nirvana they seek. Otherwise, as in all fair dealings, Kings – even these – will have to fall upon their own sword!

Fun for whole family at motor show THE BIGGEST motor show that Port Elizabeth has ever seen, is what Autism Eastern Cape is planning to hold, in association with BayFM, on Saturday, March 3. Autism Eastern Cape is a non-profit organisation caring for the well-being of children and adults with autism. The show promises fun and entertainment for the whole family.

There will be stalls to browse through for mums, a kiddies’ corner with entertainment for the kiddies, and a golf longest-drive competition, live rugby and car exhibitions for dads. A Beer Tent and Food Court will also be on offer. Besides the cars, golden oldies to the latest models, there will be motorbikes, 4 x 4s, streetrods, rally and racing cars, “stock-cars”, as well as car accessories.

Those who think they have the hottest car in town are encouraged to bring along their car and enter the competition. Bay FM will broadcast live from Londt Park from 8am on Saturday morning.
