Women’s Day Olympic glory for PE’s Jessica?

Roux, who moved to Durban to train under National Swim Coach Graham Hill for the 2016 and 2020 Olympics. Roux became keen on her open water swimming after taking part in the 2006 Ocean Racing Series, an event which she dominated. Whilst appreciating that this is a bonus Olympics for her and that open water swimming is very unpredictable, she is aiming for a top 20 finish tomorrow morning. Roux is one of three 2012 Redhouse River Mile Champions who have been selected to compete in London this year. Troyden Prinsloo (Redhouse River Mile Men’s Champion) is in the Men’s 10km Olympic event, whilst PE’s Kevin Paul (Redhouse River Mile Disabled Champion) is taking part in the Paralympics later this month.

Donate blood, give life on Women’s Day PE EXPRESS REPORTER A SPECIAL blood drive will be held at the Walker Drive Blood Donor Centre to celebrate Women’s Day on Thursday, 9 August from 9am to 2pm. Algoa FM’s Lance du Plessis will be broadcasting live from the Walker Drive Shopping Centre promotional court to encourage the public to donate blood and reach the set target of 70 units. During August the South African National Blood Service honours the many women who regularly donate blood to save the lives of people they do not know. Many of them are mothers who have already brought life into the world during childbirth. By donating blood, they are giving life again. Each year, more than 500 000 women die needlessly during pregnancy or childbirth,

99% of them in the developing world. Severe bleeding can kill even a healthy woman within two hours if unattended and contributes to approximately 44% of maternal deaths in Africa. Up to 25% of all maternal deaths could be prevented by access to safe blood. Walker Drive Shopping Centre will be sponsoring shopping centre vouchers to the first 40 women who donate blood on 9 August 2012 and more surprises and give-aways will be up for grabs on the day to all donors. Suspects sought after alleged road rage attack TINNEKE GOEDHALS A POLICE hunt is on for two white males who were involved in a possible road rage attack and shooting in broad daylight in Kragga Kamma Road just before 5pm on Saturday. Local kickboxing trainer, Hendrik Janse van Rensburg (22), was shot in the neck by a man driving a white Opel Corsa. He was yesterday moved from high care to a general ward in Netcare Greenacres Hospital. According to Van Rensburg, the Opel Corsa, which has dark gray rims and no numberplates at the back, had the driver, as well as another man and a blond girl, as occupants. Speaking from his hospital bed, Van Rensburg told PE Express yesterday that he first noticed the Corsa when they jumped a red traffic light at Sunridge Village and passed him and his girlfriend, Cheri-Leigh van Oosten, in their vehicle. Van Rensburg then drove past the Corsa at the traffic light at the Circular Drive and Kragga Kamma intersection while they were stuck in the traffic in the next lane. “At the Kabega Road intersection, just before Luneville Road, I had to swerve to the left when the driver tried to pass me despite oncoming traffic. I flashed my lights at him and threw

him a sign. “The car stopped in front of me and as the two men approached us I saw the one guy had a small firearm in his hand,” said Van Rensburg. They started shouting and swearing at him and while the one was trying to open Van Oosten’s door, the other hit

He was injured in the neck, Van Rensburg said. After the shot went off, the attacker once again swore at him and they then walked back to their car and drove off.

“At that stage I was more concerned about my girlfriend, who was so traumatised that I first took her home.” He was later admitted to the Greenacres Hospital. “I am lucky to be alive. The bullet hit my first rib, went trough my lung and ended up between my fifth and sixth vertebrae. The doctors told me if it had been 2,5mm to the front it would’ve hit my main arteries and if it had been 2,5mm to the back it would’ve gone through my heart,” said Van Rensburg. His mom, Louise Janse van Rensburg, told the PE Express that it could have been worse. “He is alive and that’s all that matters. I just hope they find these people before they hurt someone else,” she said. A student of Van Rensburg, Shaun van Eeden, said in disbelief, “If you can do that in broad daylight what else can you get away in this country?” Van Rensburg described the men as being in their late 30s or early 40s. The one man has a stocky build and dark hair. According to Van Rensburg they smelled of alcohol. The police found a shell casing inside the car and fingerprints. At time of going to print on Monday no arrests have been made. The police is investigating a case of attempted murder. People with information are asked to contact the Walmer SAPS detective branch.

SINCE June last year the Eastern Cape has experienced regular rain which, although lovely for our gardens, often results in areas of continuous waterlogged soil and rising damp in buildings. Few people are aware that off-the-shelf civil engineering solutions are readily available to improve subsoil drainage. One common solution for draining soil is to excavate a trench ( the deeper the better) and fill it with concrete stone as this creates larger voids that water will naturally move into. However, to make sure the surrounding soil does not also wash in and block the drain, a special fabric called a geotextile, (e.g. Bidim), is used between the stone and the soil. The geotextile allows water, but not soil, to pass through to the stony area. A perforated pipe is also placed about 50mm from the bottom of the trench within the stone to collect and remove the water. (Fig 1) Ready-made drains, which eliminate the need to use stone, can now also be purchased, making transport and installation easier. Two types of ready-made drains, also called geocomposites, are commonly used: either fin drains “Flo-Drain” or panel drains “Megaflo”. Flo-Drain can be purchased in varying heights from 500mm to 2000mm

Kabegaleerders slaan kontant los in omgewingskompetisie

NUWE HOOF VIR ANDREW RABIE Die Hoërskool Andrew Rabie het sedert 1 Au gustus ’n nuwe skool hoof. Willie Botha, oor spronklik van Port Elizabeth, was die af gelope 28 jaar in Queenstown woon agtig en was skool hoof van die Hoërskool JJ Serfontein voor hy hom aangesluit het by Andrew Rabie. Botha sê hy sien veral uit na die uitdagings, wil waarde toevoeg tot Andrew Rabie se leer ders en wil graag Ra bievriende ontmoet.

TINNEKE GOEDHALS DIE Laerskool Kabega het R15 000 losgeslaan toe ’n dramagroep van die skool tweede geëindig het in ’n Omgewingskompetisie wat op Vrydag, 27 Julie by die Kwadwesi-gemeenskapsaal aangebied is. Oos-Kaapse laerskole is deur die Omgewingsbemagtigingsdienste, ’n sub-direktoraat van die Oos-Kaapse departement van ekonomiese ontwikkeling, omgewingsake en toerisme, genooi om aan die kompetisie deel te neem. Die tema van die kompetisie was “Volhoubare ontwikkeling, my verbintenis tot toekomstige generasies” en deelnemende skole is versoek om op enige kunstige wyse hul intrepretasie van die tema te demonstreer. Slegs skole wat reeds werksaam is aan ’n omgewingsprojek is deelname toegelaat en moes hulle ook ’n portefeulje van die projek inhandig. Vir die afgelope 10 jaar besoek ’n groep van Kabega se gr. 6-leerders die Baakensrivier in Kabega Park as deel van natuurwetenskap-klaswerk. Die doelstelling is om die belangrikheid van die ekosisteem te ondersoek. Die water word onder meer getoets, die rivier se sterkte gemonitor en uitheemse plantegroei word geïdentifiseer. Die omgewing rondom die rivier word ook deur die leerders skoongemaak.

Dié gr. 7leerders van die Laerskool Kabega het R15 000 vir die skool gewen toe hulle tweede geëindig het met ’n dramauitvoering in ’n Omgewingskompetisie waaraan die hele OosKaap kon deelneem. azz guitarist Creshwell October is one of six finalists from all over the country to compete for a coveted SAMRO (Southern African Music Rights Organisation) overseas scholarship next week. October, from Arcadia, is the only contender from the Eastern Cape who will be competing for the prize in Johannesburg on August 15. “This is already a great achievement for me, and I will give my best at the competition. I am also very proud to represent the Eastern Cape at this event,” said October, who is a private guitar tutor. Other highlights of his career include performing with Gloria Bosman and with the Nelson Mandela Bay Youth Orchestra. “I recently completed my Bachelors Degree in Music Education and Jazz studies, and am cur-

Pixie, the badly manged dog that you featured was not only offered a foster home, but has now found her forever home. She is doing very well. As a result of your article, we received so many donations towards our kennel-building and towards her treatment. One pensioner even gathered some of her belongings and sold them, so that she could give us a R500 donation. After reading your article, an 85 year old lady, Mrs. Paterson, of Amsterdamhoek, took it upon herself to rally all the neighbourhood to collect nails for our kennelbuilding. She collected two boxes of 5 000 nails per box for us. We certainly can make a whole lot of kennels with 10 000 nails! Our thanks to all of you for making that difference.

Couple celebrates 60th anniversary PE EXPRESS REPORTER IT’S not only Queen Elizabeth for whom the number 60 is special this year. Ken (83) and Lolita (81) (nee Daniels) Reid, celebrate their 60th anniversary on August 9. They were married on this day by Rev AS Taylor in St Mary’s Cathedral in Central. They have lived in PE all their married life spending 54 years in the same home in which they still live. Lolita has been a home maker and mother for most of her married life. Ken joined the citizen force (Air Force) and got his ‘wings’ in 1952. This became a life-long hobby but he gave

craft. He worked at Ford Motor Company until the Company relocated to Pretoria when he went on early retirement. Lolita loves to be in her kitchen and to this day still bakes very frequently and loves to make birthday cakes for her grandchildren whenever she can. They are both active committee members of the South African Air Force Association with Ken being a past Chairman. Although his sight is failing Ken enjoys nothing more than watching his favourite sports on TV and is a staunch SA sports fan. They have two daughters, one in England and one in PE, and a son in East London, seven grandchildren and one great grandson

STAGEWORLD Theatre School is this week staging its latest production Medea 2012 in the Port Elizabeth Opera House from tonight until Saturday. Under the direction of Marlene ThomassePieterse, Medea 2012, it puts a contemporary take on the ancient Greek tragedy written by Euripides, based upon the myth of Jason and Medea, and first produced in 431 BC. “The same template, the same problems, the same distorted humour, the same characters. It is theatre of today – bold and to the point. The language and plot have been adapted to reflect today’s culture,” said Pieterse. The plot is straightforward and is a reflection of the world and its people as we know them today. “What is so obvious is that we are masters at creating scapegoats for our mistakes, our choices; do we accept responsibility for decisions? How easy is it to find someone and something to blame?” said Pieterse. Medea 2012’s plot revolves around the character Medea who marries Jason and they live in Corinth. Life there is about power and money. They have two beautiful little sons but Jason decides to leave Medea and marry the young daughter of King Creon. He explains to Medea that the marriage is to ensure more power, more money for them. Medea, however, learns that she and her sons will be exiled and is furious and humiliated, also knowing that she will not be allowed to return to her own country. She then kills her two sons, King Creon and the young princess, the new bride of Jason. The company dances to the music of Rammstein, Sibelius, Ill Nino, Mozart and Berlioz with choreography by Donna McLaggan. Cuan Louw, after quite an absence from the local stage, plays Jason with the beautiful Khanyisa Sigwanda as Medea. Andrew White and Megan van Wyk play their alter egos. Also in the company are Donna McLaggan, Marcia Ntoni, Deon Strydom, Aarti Narotam, Peter Lee Ching and Anneke Groenewald with an additional cast of talented singers and dancers. Team Merrell won the ladies’ race whilst Investec won the Mixed category. Then there are those occasions when one of the other teams bucks the trend and prepares an unbeatable car; we’re looking at you, Brawn. In 2012 the Lotus F1 team hasn’t been the all dominant force that Brawn was in 2009; in fact they haven’t even won a race this season. They started the winter testing season under a bit of a cloud as to what was achievable. 2011 hadn’t been stellar and the team lacked the overall intensity needed to excel in the top echelon of the sport. Yet, by the time Australia rolled around, Lotus were well on course to cause an upset or two. But it didn’t go the way it should have in the first half of the season – until Hungary, where it all changed. During the Hungarian GP the decision making was sharp and decisive and the pitstops run with intense precision. Lotus got as close to victory as they’ve been this season and, finally, it was their own performance and resolve that got them there. It could be the start

The Finn has won the Belgian GP on four separate occasions and the E20 is tailor-made for the fast sweeping turns of the famous circuit. Even with all of that in their favour they may still have a further ace up their sleeve as well. The Enstone-based team ran a double DRS system during the practice sessions for the German GP. Unlike the double DRS of Mercedes, Lotus’s version of the system carries the advantage in the race rather than only during qualifying. The system activates along with the current DRS and adds an estimated seven to eight kilometres of top speed to the existing twenty that DRS already provides. This could prove especially beneficial for the upcoming races in Spa, Monza, Japan and the US where long straights are under particular focus. If the enhanced DRS benefits the already quick Lotus package, it could be a force to be reckoned with. It has taken Lotus several months to develop the system and should other teams want to follow suit, it will be difficult to develop a similar system quickly. It’s looking good for Lotus to get to the top step of the podium sooner rather than later. Kimi Raikkonen lays 48 points adrift of championship leader Fernando Alonso but his point scoring has been consistent. Add a win or two and there’s no reason why he can’t be a real force in the race for the driver’s title.

Top enduro riders for Castrol Winterberg challenge The competition in this event will again be extremely tough and spectators are welcome to be part of the spectacle where enduro riders will be in action, aiming for the overall laurels as well as for maximum points towards the various championship titles. The event will take place from the Loerie Ruskamp in the Loerie and Hankey area in the Gamtoos Valley near Jeffrey’s Bay. The Castrol Winterberg Enduro is the fifth and penultimate round of the 2012 Liquorland SA National Enduro Motorcycle Championship. It is

one of the oldest motorsport events in South Africa and will take place for the 37th time. It will be the 34th year that Castrol will be the official sponsor for this enduro race that is also one of the most popular enduro races on the national calendar. The first Winterberg Enduro officially took place in 1976, but the “Winterberg” legacy actually started a few years before, in 1970, when Brausch Niemann, the Kawasaki dealer in PE, and a group of friends explored a trail in the Winterhoek Mountains north of Uitenhage. The scenic terrain in this area was soon adopted as a setting for one of the most spectacular enduro events on the racing calendar. The organising club, the Rover Motorcycle Club, has been in charge of this event for decades now and is

busy adding the final touches to this year’s event. The Kiwi and defending national title holder and E1 champion, Chris Birch (Comsol BELL ACR KTM), claimed victory last year. To predict a winner for the 2012 event will however be risky as Jade Gutzeit (Proudly Bidvest Yamaha), who won this event in 2003, 2005 and 2010, has already won twice this season. Birch has claimed one victory this season while the 2009 winner, Altus de Wet (Brother Broadlink KTM), has also won this season. The 2004 winner, Louwrens Mahoney (Brother Broadlink KTM) has finished on the podium three times already this season and will also aim for a second Castrol Winterberg Enduro victory. Photo: SUPPLIED

Here’s a thought for the future “A BRIDGE too far” – he wasn’t thinking of the Sharks and their date with destiny in the Super Rugby final against Waikato’s Chiefs, but the man who made it famous was Lt General Sir Frederick “Boy” Browning in World War 2. And, no doubt, looking at the Sharks and the herculean task that awaited them in Hamilton last weekend, he would have said the same again. It was never on, going back and forth across the world in just a fortnight as Keegan Daniel’s team were forced to do – and you didn’t need to be a fortune teller to see it coming. There’s no doubt on the day Chiefs were the better side. Okay, that’s stating the obvious considering the 37-6 scoreline, but without wishing to whinge or whine you need to ask whether the Sanzar organisers shouldn’t consider having a mandatory fortnight’s break between the semi-finals and the tournament final. For starters it would surely make it a truer contest, particularly in the case of knockouts as well. But there you have it; it was the Sharks’ fourth attempt at winning the championship – and fourth failure. But not all is doom and gloom. Springbok coach, Heyneke Meyer, must have seen several positives for the upcoming Four Nations Rugby Championship. Not least in the sterling efforts of the Sharks’ all-Springbok front-row; the huge work-rate of 20-year-old Marcell Coetzee and Willem Alberts; the untiring efforts of Daniel. Those six already find themselves in Meyer’s preliminary squad for the southern hemisphere internationals announced last Saturday. Also in the squad of 30 are Pat Lambie, JP Pietersen, Lwazi Mvovo, and key centre Frans Steyn. It’s something of a surprise, though, to see no recognition of Ryan

Kankowski’s efforts of late, Meyer sticking with the presently out-of-form Pierre Spies at No 8. Purely from a rugby point of view, it’s sad to bid farewell to Sonnyboy Bill Williams. What a player, even if something of a super extrovert! But he made two tries and capped a near perfect performance with one of his own – to be followed, incredibly, by the movie star leap and embrace of fans in the stand behind the goalposts. But traditional rugby’s loss will be a short-term gain for Japan – and then the game he seems to love best, Rugby League. But cheers, Sonny, it was good to know you. What a week of sport, with the opening of the 2012 London Olympic Games, and three gold medals already in the bag through the efforts of our swimmers and the foursome of rowers who will go down in history no doubt as the “Oarsome Foursome” – Sizwe Ndlovu, Matthew Brittain, John Smith and James Thompson. First though, came Cameron van der Burgh and then Chad le Clos, both striking a glittering vein of gold with the latter beating legendary American Michael Phelps in the 200m butterfly and managing silver as well in the butterfly sprint. On this occasion Phelps just managing to turn the tables. All this and Oscar Pistorius, too – the only individual in Olympic history to run the toughest “sprint” of them all – the 400m, without legs of his own. No matter what the outcome, doesn’t it make you proud? Think only of the sweat and tears it has taken! In the Olympics medals are precious but not everything. It’s the spirit of true sportsmanship and courage you’re judged by. Oh, and in this roll of honour let’s not forget the Proteas – also Alviro Petersen and (SA born and bred) Kevin Pietersen!

The Thunder Tour is based on the principles of the Power Tour in the United States where muscle cars, hot rods, street rods and supercars travel through different states and cover about 1500 miles. It is not a car club, but merely a family of car lovers who mingle with different car enthusiasts whose aim it is to create a safe environment for the owners of these special cars in South Africa to drive and enjoy their cars, family and the country while at the same time ha-ving fun together. The Thunder Tour is an anual event which visits small towns on a specific route, to show their cars to people who don’t often have the benefit of seeing these types of cars in real life unless they travel to a big cars show in the main cities in South Africa.
