Public praise for police on safer Eastern Cape The South African Police Service (SAPS) reported a drop in crime over the Festive Season, which they attributed to the implementation of a five-point plan. “This year we did things differently and it yielded excellent results,” said Lieutenant General Celiwe Binta. The five-point plan, included: • Early planning and high police visibility deployments from as early as October 1, 2011; • Christmas and New Year’s weekends identified as priority crime prevention periods; • Deployment of additional 1 200 members at the clusters of Mthatha, East London/Mdantsane, Port Elizabeth/Uitenhage; • Implementation of new operation-

al tactics such as the “lock down” of hot spots; • Deployment of senior managers over the Christmas and New Year periods to oversee effective implementation of operations. This resulted in a drop in serious crime incidents over the festive season and 726 fewer cases of contact crime and 420 fewer cases of propertyrelated crime incidents were reported for the Province over the period December 23 to January 2, 2012. For the same period, the Province also reported zero number of incidents for bank robberies, cash in transit robberies and ATM blasts. Concentrating on hot spots and illegal shebeens was another tactic, which resulted in good results and the number of murder, assault, rape and

Buiten die feit dat sy haar hele skoolloopbaan ’n top-presteerder was, het Lauren ook uitgeblink in al die skoolforums waarop sy gedien het en was sy ook op die skool se leerderraad. Sy moes egter verlede jaar klavier en tennis prysgee om op haar skoolwerk en ander buitemuurse bedrywighede te konsentreer.

Langer skoolure vir Gr.1’s en 2’s ALICESTINE OCTOBER EN SAPA GRAAD 1- en gr. 2- leerders kan vanjaar ’n langer skool-dag verwag, het die departement van basiese onderwys aangekondig. “Die skooldag sal ’n halfuur langer wees,” het Hope Mokgatlhe, woordvoerder van die departement, gesê. “Ons wil Engels as eerste bykomende taal op gr. 1-vlak inbring.” Mokgatlhe het gesê leerders het voorheen eers van gr. 3 af Engels begin leer. Dit is egter die taal waarin

die skoolkurrikulum in Suid-Afrika onderrig en getoets word, en is dus van deurslaggewende belang. In sommige skole in die Wes-Kaap sal Afrikaans as die eerste bykomende taal aangebied word. Mokgatlhe het bygevoeg die skooldag in die grondslagfase (gr. 1 tot gr. 3) sal nie langer as ses uur wees nie. Voorheen is leerders weekliks altesaam nege uur en tien minute in geletterdheid onderrig. Van volgende jaar af sal tien uur se klastyd tussen die twee tale verdeel word. Die tyd wat weekliks aan wiskunde bestee word, sal van sewe en ’n half-

uur tot sewe uur verminder word, terwyl ’n halfuur meer per week aan lewensvaardighede gewy sal word. Mokgatlhe het gesê individuele skole sal besluit hoe hulle hul roosters gaan aanpas om dié veranderings in die leerplan in te werk. Volgens Jaco Deacon, woordvoerder van die Federasie van Beheerliggame van Suid-Afrikaanse Skole, gaan langer skoolure nie noodwendig ’n verskil maak nie. “Dit is soos om ’n pleister op die verkeerde plek te plak. Die gehalte van onderrig en van onderwysers moet aandag kry.”

LOCAL photographer and owner of Hugo Studio, Leon Hugo, is preparing for yet another Go2Explore adventure as he joins the Building of Hope Foundation in Mombasa, Kenya, for seven weeks to build a hostel for blind, orphaned children with over 200 volunteers from Ireland. He will be leaving tomorrow (January 12) and returning on the 28th of February. Last year Hugo raised in excess of R20 000 for the Chevrolet, Johan Botha Cycle for Charity 2011 event while touring Namibia through his Go2Explore initiative. This year, while not fundraising directly, Hugo will be donating all his time for free, for the duration of the project. This is not the first time that Hugo has been involved with the Building of Hope foundation, having previously assisted them in PE in 2008, when they built an Aids Hospice at Sister Ethel’s Missionvale Care Centre, and again in 2010, where he spent a month with volunteers building a training centre in Mombasa, Kenya. “I am really looking forward to spending this time in Kenya, assisting them with recording the wonderful work they are doing for these children,” said Hugo. “There will be four groups of volunteers coming through one at a time to assist in the project, but I will be staying on for the entire duration to capture everything on film,” he said. Hugo said the volunteers, all of whom came from Ireland, were aged between 20 and 68, and would start working from as early as 5am. “This is because it gets extremely hot and humid in Mombasa, so they want to get as much done in the day, before it gets too hot to work,” he said.

LEARNERS who have never met a Mr South Africa will now have the chance to meet Adriaan Bergh, who was crowned last year. Adriaan will be visiting over 50 schools throughut the country next week as part of the YOU, DRUM and Huisgenoot 2012 School Tour. He will be visiting schools in Port Elizabeth on Monday, February 13, to motivate schoolchildren for the new year. Adriaan says he wants to inspire learners to lead a healthier, more balanced lifestyle. “My parents showed me the importance of balancing sport, academics and leadership, so I know what a difference it makes to have balance in your life,” he says. Adriaan supports Friends of Child Protection, a registered charity organisation that assists the South African Police Service (SAPS) and its Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit (FCS). He will raise awareness and funds for the charity through this tour. The 24-year-old Mr SA attended school in Bela Bela where he obtained provincial colours in six sporting disciplines – cricket, rugby, golf, tennis, cross-country running and biathlon. Until recently he was part of the Blues Bull squad that played in the Vodacom Cup and is in the under-23 Limpopo golf team. He has obtained a degree in quantity surveying from the University of Pretoria and is now studying for a BSc honours degree. Williams lose their Head Talking F1 by Natalie le Clue Back in the day even the idea of taking on the mighty factory teams seemed impossible. But Frank Williams and Patrick Head weren’t deterred. Together they founded the Williams F1 team in 1977. Within a year of the team’s debut at the 1977 Spanish Grand Prix Williams started building their own car. It was one year later that the Williams/Head duo had their first taste of success as Switzerland’s Clay Regazzoni took Williams’s first ever victory at the 1979 British Grand Prix. The first of many world titles came in 1980 with Alan Jones and by the time Jacques Villeneuve was crowned world champion in 1997, the Williams team had amassed 100 Formula 1 race victories. Statistics, to date, show 113 race victories, 126 pole positions and 130 fastest laps. These stats include nine Constructors’ world titles and seven drivers’ world championship.

Coupled with the brilliant Renault engine for which Williams was most dominant during the early nineties. Drivers such as Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost and Damon Hill all captured world champion crowns during their stint as Williams drivers. Williams’s reputation and record was enough to lure the great Ayrton Senna into their stable. It was the perfect fit for the world champ, and preseason in 1994 already had the electric Brazilian tipped as a favourite for the title. Sadly, Ayrton Senna never completed a race for Williams, having failed to finish any of first rounds of the 1994 season and fatally crashing during the third round at the San Marino Grand Prix. As a sign of support towards the Ayrton Senna Foundation every Williams car since has carried a Senna ‘S’ on its livery. A slight resurgence, this time backed by BMW power, in 2003 saw Juan-Pablo Montoya challenge for the driver’s title by winning four races during the season; Montoya ultimately ended the season eleven points adrift of Schumacher and Raikkonen. Coincidentally, Williams’s last race victory was scored by Juan-Pablo Montoya during the 2004 Brazilian Grand Prix. In recent times the once all-dominating Williams team has waned dramati-

cally. Despite announcing a reunion with Renault as engine supplier, the team remain in dire straits. By having only scored five points from nineteen races in 2011 Williams recorded one of their least successful seasons in its 34year history. As a result main sponsor AT&T has since withdrawn leaving the team in search of a new title sponsor. The 2012 season doesn’t hold much promise for the Grove-based team with the squad still without a teammate for Pastor Maldonado. Nevertheless, stranger things have happened and Formula 1 must never be classed as predictable. Not only does the team find itself in financially dire straits but co-founder Patrick Head has officially stepped down from the F1 team. As the team’s founding engineer, Head oversaw the design and construction of Williams cars until 2004. Several high profile engineers, including Adrian Newey, Neil Oatley, Ross Brawn, Frank Dernie and Geoff Willis, all worked under Patrick Head during the early stages of their respective careers. As, Patrick Head, one of the great journeymen of the sport steps down from one of its most iconic and successful teams it truly can be classed as the end of an era. His contribution has been genuinely immeasurable.

The older sibling, Jason (19), won the Dischem 1km Ocean Swim from younger brother, Daniel (14), whilst 16-year-old Wayne prefers the longer distance 2km race, which he’s made his own this season. The Dischem 2km Ocean Swim now increases to a 3km swim from round 8 on January 22 as the Series prepares the Ironman and Open Water Swimmers for their national events

in March and April this year. It would also appear that undefeated Series 5km runner, Marinus Johnson, can expect some tough competition towards the end of the season with Sundays winner (in the absence of Johnson), Rodney Prins, an up-and-coming star on the running circuit. Prins, who comes from Hankey, won the Sundays beach run in 15min 57sec. Full results from Sundays event are available on the Series website, www.oceanracingseries.com. The next race day will be Sunday, January 22 from 9am at Hobie Beach, with entries opening from 7.30am.

Cirrus EP swim champs The Cirrus Bio-Ears EP Open Water Swimming Championships take place at Marina Martinique at the end of the month. The Championship 10km swim takes place on Saturday, January 28, with the 5km and 3km swims taking place on Sunday, January 29. Also included in the Sunday morning are the kids’ 500m and bank-to-bank swim, as well as a 1km swim. Hydration for the event is sponsored by aQuellé with vehicles being provided by Eco car and van Hire. Championship information and entry is available on the website at www.ecswim.co.za.

WELL, hello there (almost said, “Dolly”) – and a Happy New Year to you all! Let’s jump straight in. What’s on the menu? Well, quite a bit of cricket – and as we look ahead to the Australian Open, the hardcourts of Roland Garros and the green grass of Wimbledon, a tiny bit of tennis. For starters let’s tackle the Smith bashers: yes, Graeme Smith. He’s been leading the Proteas in cricket’s international arena since the tender age of 22 with more than a little distinction, but still so-called cricket experts continue to hammer him every time he strikes a lean patch. Talk about fickleness! Have a heart. You only have to rewind and go back to last Tuesday when the Proteas captain got out to a reckless shot on the opening day of the third and deciding Test against Sri Lanka to see the real Smith. He kicked the ground and cursed himself. Why? Because that’s how much he cares

– that’s how much it means to him. Let’s not forget that even amid his apparent lack of form in the last 12 months, his average was still 40! Yes, cricket is the funniest of funny old games, as so ably demonstrated by the 2-1 mini-series defeat of Sri Lanka. Redhouse River Mile returns to the Bay AFRICA’S oldest open water swimming event in the form of the SPAR Redhouse River Mile returns to Nelson Mandela Bay on Sunday, February 19, at the Cannonville Village of Sunday’s River. Started in 1924, the river mile is celebrating its 88th anniversary with organisers, Zports, predicting a bumper event. Over 5 000 participants and spectators will be expected to converge on the slipway area of the quaint Cannonville Village as swimmers compete for a cash prize pool of R28 000. An action-packed sporting day is planned, kicking off with the Discovery 5km Trail Run
