Volkswagen Rally fever PE EXPRESS REPORTER

HERE are just two days left before the highly anticipated 30th running of the annual Volkswagen Rally on Friday and Saturday, which will see the the cream of South Africa’s rally fraternity in action on a combination of tar and gravel stages. The event, round number four on the 2012 South African national rally calendar, is shaping up to be an intense battle between the top five competitors in the S2000 class. Just ten points separate these first five teams which consist of Ford, Toyota and Volkswagen entries, making it a tough three-way battle that will take place in the Eastern Cape. With nearly 200 km of competition distance and 12 stages of rallying that will take place on both gravel and tar, the rally competitors are going to have to keep their wits about them. Competitors in the 2012 Volkswagen Rally will make the traditional Auto Pavilion start outside of the main gate of the Volkswagen plant in Uitenhage where the public will enjoy free entry to the museum for the day. This is also a good time for rally fans to meet their favourite rally competitors and take the opportunity to collect autographs and take a few photos of their motorsport heroes. “The Volkswagen Rally is one of the best rallies on the national calendar,” said Mike Rowe, head of Volkswagen Motorsport. “It is well organised and run by the Algoa Rally Association and route organiser, Joe Fourie, who celebrates his 21st Volkswagen Rally with us this year. There is a dedicated team of enthusiasts who ensure the event is as good as it could possibly be and this shows in the organisation.” Competitors will be contesting stages in Gamtoos, the Longmore Forest, Uitenhage and the Port Eliza-

beth Oval Track Raceway (PEOTR) in Greenbushes, and will also contest the very popular Kings Beach spectator stage which is the traditional grand finale. “This year promises to be a very good event,” said route organiser Joe Fourie. “Good rains in the area have significantly reduced the fire risk in the Longmore Forest; the roads are in good condition and there are even a couple of new stages as well. We’re all anticipating that the 30th running of the Volkswagen Rally is going to be one of the best we’ve had.” Competitors in the Volkswagen Rally will face one of the two new stages right at the start of the event when they head to Melon in the Gamtoos area. Here Fourie has indicated that the field will face a challenging, but extremely good first stage. “That first stage hasn’t been used

for many years,” said Fourie. “It is a good distance, at 10.5 km long, but the competitors will find themselves in competition on a stage that would do a round of the WRC (World Rally Championship) proud.” Five stages await the Volkswagen Rally competitors on Friday, with a further seven scheduled for Saturday – of which three will be duplicated from day one of the rally. The focus for the event is on providing a challenging rally for competitors while retaining the high level of spectator-friendliness for which the Volkswagen Rally is known. “Accessibility is a big issue on a rally,” said Fourie. “Getting rally fans to good viewing points while not interfering with the rally itself is a challenge. The popularity of the Volkswagen Rally amongst spectators is legendary and we do every-

thing we can to make it as easy as possible for them to be a part of the action.” Those enthusiasts who cannot travel to follow the route can visit the final stage at the Kings Beach parking lot on Saturday. Here there will be static displays and stalls, as well as karting displays, street rods, the Xtreme Veedubz club, the Dunlop Drifters and even the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University students showing off their Formula Student entry. These displays will include both static and “laps” of the planned rally stage. The day’s activities at this point will reach their highlight when the national rally field arrives to contest the final stage in spectacular tarmac fashion and this will be followed by the event prizegiving.

M’well finalist in Women of the Year MOTHERWELL in Port Elizabeth boasts a finalist in the Educator’s Category of the 2012 Shoprite Checkers Women of the Year Award. Nomonde Ntsundwana is a 47-year-old, single mother of two who has turned her life-long passion for gardening into an extension of her primary school mathematics teaching career, is making a massive impact on local communities with inspiring projects combining environmental awareness with alleviating poverty. She started her work in 2005 when she transformed the dry schoolyard of Canzibe Primary, a township school in Motherwell, into a sustainable food garden with the help of the Agricultural Resource Council in Pretoria. It has now rolled out to maintained gardens in ten schools, two NGO’s and two churches. Ntsundwana learned about a holistic way of gardening that includes harvesting rainwater, recycling biodegradable material and using organic composting methods that are energy efficient. that the orange-fleshed sweet potato needs little water and does well in harsh weather conditions, helped tremendously. It became a good tool to teach the children and the community that there are sustainable ways to overcome periods of drought. The education surrounding these projects is very important to Ntsundwana, who is driven to share her knowledge about the importance of gardening and the food production process. At the moment she has an hour-long community radio programme, ‘UfundoNgezo Limo’ once a week in which she reaches out to her community and teaches them. It is broadcast on Nkqubela FM every Thursday between 5pm and 6pm. In a world where natural resources are depleting rapidly she believes it is very important to teach children that supermarkets are not the source of food but that they must connect with the environment. In 2011 her Canzibe gardening project was chosen to be one of the six Eco-Pioneers profiled by the TOTAL Petroleum and Oil Company in their quest to recognize institutions and individuals who are committed to protecting the environment and actively working towards a greener planet. On the 28th of November 2011, Nomonde was awarded the prestigious Kudu Award from the South African National Parks in the category of individual Environmental Education and Capacity Building. The winners in each category will be announced at a gala event at Emperor’s Palace in Gauteng on Saturday 21 July 2012. This dazzling event will be broadcast on Wednesday, 8 August 2012 on Mzansi Magic, DSTV.

His daughter, Sadieka Moodien says she is concerned about the health and safety risk the current situation is posing. “I have small children, and residents have already found three snakes around here, and there are also rodents and centipedes that weren’t around before.” The Moodiens said that they have not been to see a councillor about the problem as they did not know who the councillor was or where to find him or her. Ward 32 DA Councillor, Sandra Fillis, said she had investigated the area after the PE Express informed her about the situation. “I spoke to the building contractor and he informed me that before they started the renovation of the building they informed the residents of their intention and they also went door to door with a petition in order for them to have a signed agreement stating that the residents were satisfied with their plans,” she said. “He also told me that in order for them to alleviate the criminal factor, they had thrown the access rub-

ble into the ditches where the criminals normally operated from, thus creating an access road between Freeman Street and Rensburg road. Unfortunately the filling which was delivered was not the kind of filling they expected, which might be the reason why the residents are concerned. To fix this they have now contracted a new supplier with better building filling, which will ensure the view is not such an eyesore.” The Moodiens responded by saying that they were not aware that the situation would be this bad. “The information we received about the proposed plan was very vague. We never expected the situation to be this way. We also don’t know which ‘criminal factor’ they are talking about, as we never raised that topic,” Sadieka Moodien said. Fillis added that she had been struggling for a year to get an office in Cleary Park to enable her to better address the concerns of the Hillside, Salsoneville, Cleary Estate and Salt Lake residents. “I am now serving these communities on Tuesdays and Thursdays from houses situated in Salt Lake, at 63 Pamplin Street and 19 Baartman Street.” Residents can contact Councillor Fillis or her assistant on 0 082 968 5650 (office) or 0 071 585 9749.

Info sought about cell phone robbery Kabega Park Detectives are looking for information after an incident in Kabega Park on June 1, 2012 when a 20-year old man was robbed of his cell phone. According to police spokesperson Capt. Sandra Janse van Rensburg, the man was at the Oasis Bowling Centre in Kabega Park. As he left the club at about 10.20pm to use the toilet facilities in the bowling centre, he was approached by 3 male suspects, who pushed him against the wall and took his cell phone, a Blackberry, from him. The police have issued a facial compilation of an individual who could possibly assist the SAPS of Kabega Park in their investigation. Mom refuses to give up on baby ZELDRÉ SWANEPOEL A MOTHER’S love never gives up hope, and that is exactly the case with Noraan Redlinghuis, who was told by doctors that her baby wouldn’t live past the age of two. Baby Nu’maan (six months) was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) type 1, also called “floppy baby syndrome”. It means that he has very little muscle tone, weak muscles, and feeding and breathing problems. At six months he is as limp as a newborn baby, and cannot sit up or support himself on his legs. “The doctor at the hospital told me that he wouldn’t live past 2 years, but I refuse to just sit back and wait for my baby to die. I want to get him the best treatment and support possible, to make his life more comfortable,” Noraan said. His illness was discovered only about a month ago, when she noticed that he wasn’t developing as a baby of his age should. “He is very limp, and at first I thought maybe he’s just a lazy baby, that it would improve. But when he was five months old and still not trying to stand on his little legs, I became worried and took him to a paediatrician.” She said that the staff at the hospital where Nu’maan was born, should have picked up that

he had the illness, but did not. She also said that, strangely, when the baby had his vaccinations he did not cry, and the nurse administering the injections simply attributed it to him being a “strong baby”. While in the womb, the baby also had not kicked as much as her three other children during her pregnancies, she said. Because the family has no medical aid, a private doctor referred Nu’maan to a local public hospital in order to get a referral from them to the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Cape Town. Noraan is unemployed. “But when I saw a doctor there, he basically told me that sending my baby to Red Cross wouldn’t be worth it because he will die eventually. I refuse to just accept this. I want my baby to have the best possible treatment. He deserves it. I cannot just give up on him.” In the meantime the local hospital is offering counselling for Noraan and physio- and speech therapy for Nu’maan. Nu’maan’s granny Tilla added that the little baby had crept deep into everyone’s heart, and they will do everything in their power to help him. “I feel so sorry for him. He is so cute, and mentally there is nothing wrong with, he is just like any other baby. He laughs and babbles and he is a very good baby. He brings us so much joy,” she said. Algoa FM Winter Woolly Week receives warm welcome THE people of the Eastern Cape and Garden Route opened up their hearts, wallets and purses for the poor in the 2012 Algoa FM Winter-Woolly Week campaign. They donated over 700 blankets, 900 black bags of clothing items, 100 pairs of slippers, 300 jerseys, 3 000 white soft toys, 100 cushions and 1 090 tins of food. In addition, Woolworths Lorraine has committed to feed Community Chest charities three times a week for a year. “We are still receiving calls to collect items and have distributed to 50 charities so far. We have also reached out to the individuals on the street and those who were affected by the floods,” said Colette Theron, Public Relations officer for Community Chest. “I think that the best way to see the impact you make on people’s lives through this initiative is to actually go to one of these children’s homes or old age homes and see in what dire need they are in of even the most basic necessities,” added KayCee Rossouw, presenter on Algoa FM. Last week Thursday both Charlton Tobias from the Morning Show on Algoa FM and KayCee joined Colette to help distribute warm clothes and blankets to ACVV Kamvalethu Drop-in Centre in Schauderville. Kamvalethu, meaning “Our Future”, runs daily programmes with street children. It focuses on assisting the children to get off the streets.

Word of Faith Women’s Blanket Drive in full swing THE women of Word of Faith Christian Centre, under the leadership of Pastor Mariana Crompton, decided to connect with Project Hope and to collect blankets, jerseys and jackets that could be distributed in one of the areas where the need is very high. Project Hope works directly with the schools and leaders in an area where they feed 1 000 children per day. Under the leadership of Andrew Petersen and his psychologist wife, Eluazia Petersen, the team not only feed the children, but also teach them values that will help them to sustain an improved quality of life if they hold to them. Now they will also go into these homes where they will distribute jerseys, jackets and blankets. Rotary members honoured PE EXPRESS REPORTER AT its recent induction dinner, the Rotary Club of PE Sunrise presented a Paul Harris Fellow to outgoing president Dave Raymer in special recognition of his outstanding commitment to Rotary and the community in the Nelson Mandela Bay area. This recognition is not awarded annually but rather to those who have gone beyond the call of duty and who give so much of their time and service to the community. “As this recognition is made by the President of the Club it came as quite a surprise to me,” said David, who received the recognition from fellow Paul Harris recipient, past District Governor Fred Roberts from the Rotary Club of Algoa. The Annual Laura Slabbert Stadler Award was presented to another Paul Harris Fellow, Michael Zoetmulder of Zports Events for his commitment to living up to the highest ideals of Rotary. Zoetmulder was instrumental in establishing a number of annual fundraisers such as the SPAR Redhouse Rivermile, Discovery Triathlon, Urban Run and many other fundraising opportunities to the Club. Michael is also the club attendance officer and has assisted in highlighting the unique diversity of the Rotary Club of PE Sunrise through marketing and PR opportunities.

A card from Queen Elizabeth was sent to the couple from Buckingham Palace. The card had a portrait photo of the Queen on it and the message in the card read, “I am so pleased to know that you are celebrating your Diamond Wedding Anniversary on the 5th of July 2012. I send my congratulations and best wishes to you on such a special occasion.” The arrangements for the card re-

quired a great deal of planning from their daughter, Elizabeth Orrey, to ensure that the greetings and well wishes from the queen arrived before their big day on July 5. Elizabeth had to sneak into their house to collect all the documents she required. To make the application she had to send a certified copy of their marriage certificate and copies of their British passport. The Haineses are originally from England and tied the knot in Leicester in 1952. They moved to South Africa in 1965 for business and lived in Cape Town for the first seven years, before Stanley was tranferred to PE. The secret to such a long marriage, Alma said, “is that as you grow together over the years and become one, you

make a good team. Love and patience are also key factors. One can always work through ups and downs and when you try to see the funny side to things it helps you get through a lot.” The couple were also spoilt with a Morning Tea that was arranged by their children, Jennifer Blackshaw, Martin Haines and Elizabeth Orrey for friends and family. Their eldest daughter, Jennifer, flew down from Cape Town. Their son, Martin a potter who lives in NieuBethesda, gave his parents a ceramic plate to commemorate the special day. The Haineses also have four grand children. The couple have now been settled in Laubscher Park West for the past seven years and say they are blessed with wonderful friends and neighbours and also good health.

Entries for Pretty Things for Little Things open ENTRIES for the 2012 Pretty Things for Little Things competition opened on June 1. The Pretty Things for Little Things project, now in its tenth year, is held by Shoprite and Checkers, in conjunction with Age-in-Action. The project calls on entrants to make anything practical, durable and safe that a child can wear or play with. Articles can be made of any resources available and can be entered into four categories, namely soft toys, blankets, clothing, and other articles made from materials such as wood, tin or wire. Anyone can take part in the project, but only senior citizens over 60 who enter their handiwork stand a chance of winning generous vouchers that can be used at Shoprite, Checkers or Checkers Hyper stores nationwide. Three winners per category will be selected in each province. The provincial winners receive gift vouchers to the value of R2500, R2000 and R1500 for first, second and third places in that order, and also go through to the final judging round in which three national winners per category are chosen. National winners receive vouchers to the value of R6 000, R4 000 and R3 000 for the top three positions respectively. There is also a merit prize for the person who enters the most items in his/her province, as well as for the person who enters the most items nationally. The closing date for the competition is August 31 and winners will be announced in September. Winners’ names will also be published in the December edition of Ideas magazine. Entertainment, food, heritage and mountainbiking at Biltong festival WHILE the showgrounds at the 22nd Castle Lager East Cape Biltong Festival on July 13 and 14 will be abuzz with activity for all, there will be just as much to do away from the showgrounds during this year’s festival. Gastronomical, heritage and architectural routes, as well as a mountain bike ride, are just some of the activities happening off the showgrounds. The Gastronomical Route is a tour of all the restaurants, delis, diners and take-away places, as well as pub and grills all around Somerset East. From a coffee shop where you can have a light meal, some good coffee and maybe pick up a gift or two, to a Deli where you can taste ‘oh so decadent’ desserts, the Route promises something for even the pickiest eater. The Heritage and Architectural Routes will cater for those whose interests lie more in looking and learning about old and beautiful things. The route will take participants on a walk around Somerset East to learn about the picturesque beauty that can be found in the town. Among the things to experience is a visit to the Walter Battiss Art Museum in Paulet Street, which is arguably the street with the most historically valuable buildings in town. The Biltong Festival Mountain Bike Ride on Saturday, 14 July, is a refreshing activity for the whole family to enjoy. It is a 45km ride in the surrounding area of Somerset East and this year some new, never ridden before, single tracks have been included. The ride will start at 9.30am at the Hub near the Somerset East Golf Course and costs R80, which includes refreshments at the end of the ride. One water point will be provided, as well as kiddies’ rides and babysitting at R50 per child. Registration for the ride will open on the day from 8am and all ages are welcome.

amongst the national artists who will be setting the Karoo ablaze at the East Cape Biltong Festival. Born in the Eastern Cape, Zahara, whose debut album Loliwe sold a staggering 100 000 copies in barely 19 days, will no doubt be one of the many performances festivalgoers are looking forward to this year. Other big names in the music industry to perform include Steve Hofmeyr, Theuns Jordaan, Professor, Elvis Blue, Jamali, Emo Adams and Robbie Wessels. The local talent programme of the Castle Lager East Cape Biltong Festival allows local performing artists from the whole of the Blue Crane Route Municipality (BCRM), which includes Somerset East (home of the Biltong Festival), Pearston and Cookhouse, to be part of the Festival. From singing to traditional dancing, local performers will showcase their talents. The inclusion of this programme at the Festival is to encourage and give local performers a platform where they can exhibit their talent, as well as encourage them in becoming better at their art. The performances include soloist musicians, poetry, hip hop, gospel music, kwaito, gumboots dance, and traditional dance, ballroom dancing, choral and opera music and pantsula jive. The over-18 performers such as Ncedanani Youth Group, NB Geez, Perfect Harmonies, KWV, Three Tenors, Pierre Venter, Lindelwa Mboya, Trevisha Miggels and Sinathemba Alam, will get to perform on the big stage, the Castle Lager Gig Rig, on the Friday (July 13), starting from 1pm. The under 18’s, such as Siyakhula Traditional Dance Group, Cookhouse gumboots dance, Mandela Group, Young Masters, VIP’s, Tyral Lee Miggels, Siyanqoba Gumboot, Siyakhula Gumboot and Another Three Tenors, get to showcase their talents in the Bokjol on Saturday (July 14), starting at 11pm. Record victory for Gamble MICHAEL ZOETMULDER THE Gamble Pharmacy running team broke the course record last Thursday night in the second round of the Investec Night Relay which saw course records in 3 of the 4 categories being rewritten. Held at North End Lake in near perfect conditions, given the time of year, the race provided the fastest times in the history of this Business Night Relay Series as over 100 corporate and social teams took part in this fun event. The youngsters running under the colours of Gamble Pharmacy broke their previous course record in the Men’s Relay division by just under 2 minutes to record a very fast 1hr 7min 33sec over the 21km distance. The all ladies’ Team Merrell from Medicus Shoes shattered the previous ladies’ record held by the Rhino Group finishing in a time of 1hr 31min 39sec, whilst the mixed running team from naming Sponsors Investec broke the Mixed category record by almost 10 minutes to record a time of 1hr 17min 45sec. Thursday’s event was used to create awareness for the ACVV’s Kamvalethu Centre which is the only drop-in centre for street children in Nelson Mandela Bay. Situated in Korsten the centre focuses on empowering the children and their families, getting them off the streets and providing the children with food, clothing and the opportunity to wash themselves and their clothing. Participants and friends of the Investec Night Relay Series brought donations for the centre on the evening. The Series still has two more race nights on the last Thursday evening of August and September. Jbay comes alive The Billabong Pro J-Bay kicked off yesterday and will run until Sunday as the current U20 and Open Men’s South African champions are both entered into this 6 Star Men’s event on the current ASP World Tour. With 96 top surfers taking part, South African U20 Champion Mikey February from Kommetjie and Open Men’s Champion Casey Grant from Scottburgh are both looking forward to an awesome event. “I’m stoked to get

a slot into the event,” said Casey on hearing his inclusion. “I really hope we get some pumping surf for the event. I have a bunch of new boards that are going good, and I have been surfing a lot on the coast, so I am feeling fit and confident for the event.” There are also 11 surfers out of the top 34 surfers from the World Championship Tour entered into the event, including Travis Logie and Jordy Smith. Wildcards Dale Staples and Brandon Jackson have been chosen by ASP Africa, and they will be seeded into the round of 96. Brothers Ryan and Shaun Payne are the Billabong wildcards, and they too will be seeded into the round of 96. Jeffreys Bay Boardriders have chosen Kelvin Zehmke as their representative and he will receive a wildcard into the event, and the JBU Surf Club have chosen Dan Thornton as their wildcard surfer. “I’m really stoked to get a wildcard into the round of 96,” said Staples on hearing the news. “It looks like we’re going to get some excellent waves for the beginning of the contest, so hopefully I can put my Supertubes experience to good use.” Keep up to date with contest times and days on http://wctbrasil.com/jbay12

Organised by the Eastern Cape 4x4 Club, this year’s event once again did not disappoint and saw a crowd of 3 000 spectators and a total of 51 vehicles participating from all over South Africa. “Isuzu is extremely proud to be associated with this challenge. Every year has been bigger and it’s important that we keep growing the event,” said Isuzu Brand Manager, Mlungisi Nonkonyana. Vehicles and driving skills were put to the test as drivers navigated their vehicles through ten challenging obstacle courses. The following classes were represented: Class A modified with diff lock; Class B with no diff lock (open diff modified); Class C1; Class C2 Production vehicles and Class D with two-wheel drive buggies.The overall winner of the day, Antonie Swart, driving a 2 wheel drive buggy scored 603 points. He completed his time trial in an incredible 37 seconds. “The day was excellent and I am ecstatic that we came out as overall winners. It was a very difficult track today, but with the pow-

THIS year marked the 11th anniversary of the Isuzu 4x4 Challenge sponsored by General Motors South Africa (GMSA), and its Isuzu brand, at the Lookout in Kirkwood on Saturday, June 30.

In second place was Richard Pook with 561 points, driving a 1800 Pipe Frame buggy and in third position was 11-year-old Bradley Schreiber with 521 points, driving a 1600 2 Wheel Drive buggy. This event was Schreiber’s first Isuzu 4x4 Challenge. He said, “I always wanted to compete in this event but I wasn’t allowed to enter last year because I didn’t have enough experience. This event is exciting, it’s much more than I expected and I had lots of fun.” Five standard Isuzu KB300 4x4’s were entered into the C2 Production vehicles class. “For standard production vehicles, the Isuzu’s have been phenomenal. If you looked at all the other vehicles here, they have all been extensively modified. “We wanted to show the public what we can do with a standard vehicle - people can buy these vehicles and they can have a lot of fun and be confident driving them,” said Nonkonyana. Also present at the Lookout for the event was the Isuzu Off-Road Academy. This initiative is open to customers around South Africa who want to make the most of their 4x4 vehicles in a controlled environment, as well as enhance their off-road driving capabilities. All proceeds raised at the Isuzu 4x4 Challenge will be donated to the Kirkwood High School and St Reginald’s Primary School. As Michelle Wilson, Public Relations Officer for GMSA, emphasized, “At General Motors we don’t just assemble and sell great products, we also care about the community in which we operate.”

‘Local lad’ Webber on top NATALIE LE CLUE THE Silverstone Formula 1 weekend started in a torrential downpour but by the time Sunday arrived it was nothing but clear blue skies for the fifty-two laps of the famed British Grand Prix. The greatest worry for pole sitter Fernando Alonso was how the hard compound tyre would stack up in terms of pace when compared with those drivers who opted to start the race on the soft compound. The fear was unfounded as Alonso built a comfortable gap of five seconds over Mark Webber. It appeared that the Spaniard was well in control of his own destiny and on his way towards a third victory of the season. Not quite. The strategy demanded a run on the soft compound for the final stint of the race. The Ferrari would eventually fall prey to a charging Mark Webber as the Australian opted for hard tyres in his final pitstop. The gap between the two may have reduced by a second a lap but with only five laps remaining Webber had to make his one opportunity count. There was no hesitation as the Red Bull driver pounced at the first sighting of a gap. For a guy who wasn’t really fancied for victory this weekend Webber drove an extremely well measured and controlled race. It was for all money a perfect performance. A great getaway from the line, clean pitstops, the right call on strategy and taking the race by the scruff of the neck at exactly the right time. It’s hard to have a better day than that. You would think that Webber would revel in the glory of another victory but he has already turned his razor sharp focus towards the next race in Germany. Mark has voiced his preference for staying in F1 next year; it won’t be hard for him to pen a new contract with the kind of performance he put in on Sunday. McLaren experienced a woeful weekend as Hamilton complained of an overall lack of pace and Button was left scrapping for a single point. If this is the case McLaren will have to find a solution, quickly. Pastor Maldonado was yet again involved in a questionable incident; this time with the Sauber of Sergio Perez. At some stage a line has to be drawn when it comes to the Venezuelan’s behaviour on the circuit. Maldonado has been given a ten thousand euro fine and reprimand for the incident. Surely the blatant disrespect for his fellow competitors and the rules of the sport demands a more serious consequence? Nico Rosberg was again comprehensively outperformed by teammate Schumacher. For all the criticism Michael Schumacher has endured since his comeback to the sport, the last couple of weeks have surely been especially sweet for him. Headline after headline decried Schumacher’s incompetence and mocked his failure to outperform his less experienced teammate. The tables have turned in the last few races with Rosberg struggling to match Schumacher’s level. Rosberg finished in fifteenth place and thirty seconds behind Schumacher. Mark Webber’s first lap after arriving in England from Australia was around the Silverstone circuit. As Webber made his home just down the road of the famous circuit several wins in various classes of motor racing followed. He may not be a born-and-bred Brit but Mark’s level of familiarity and comfort with the surroundings makes it a de facto home race. Two British GP victories in Formula 1 will surely rank among the Australian’s all time highlights. There are few tougher competitors than Mark Webber and with another twenty-five points he has made his intent to win the 2012 championship crystal clear. Well done, AussieGrit!

Perhaps it’s the weather: all that humidity, bikinis, beach umbrellas, surfing and sunshine. The way they play their sport is much the same – specially rugby. There was a time they were so Harry Casual they were known, a mite disparagingly, as the “Banana Boys”. Now they’re called the Sharks, but you still get the feeling sometimes that how they perform on a given day depends on how they felt when they awoke that morning. However, even when they were known as the Banana Boys, they produced some famous upsets. No one was immune. Home or away, all the famous names – Northern Transvaal, WP, Free State, Transvaal, international touring teams as well – suffered when the wearers of the black and white awoke with that good feeling. When they stretched and muttered pugnaciously: “Yeah, this afternoon we’ll pull out the stops, show you what we’re made of!” But lately – indeed far too often for the liking of their sometimes exasperated Kiwi coach, John Plumtree – they seem to awakened just longing for a nice surf-and-sunshine day at the beach. How else do you explain the recent disaster at Jo’burg’s Ellis Park against the Lions? NMMU wins surfing championships THE Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University surfing team from Port Elizabeth won the overall title at 2012 SA Students Championships at Victoria Bay on June 29. The defending champions posted a total score of 43 492, thanks to a fine performance by the men and women from the Bay. The University of Cape Town team came second with 37 080 points and Varsity College came in third with 33 580 points. The University of Stellenbosch finished fourth, Rhodes University were fifth, the Cape Peninsula University of Technology sixth and NMMU George came seventh. NMMU PE also took honours in the Men’s division, beating Varsity College into second place. The University of Cape Town team were third with Stellenbosch University fourth, Cape Peninsula University of Technology fifth, Rhodes University sixth and NMMU George seventh. The University of Cape Town team won the Women’s division with Stellenbosch University second, NMMU PE third, Rhodes University fourth and Varsity College fifth. Shawn Dennis of Varsity College won the Men’s final beating Clinton Gravett of NMMU PE into second place. UCT’s Phillip Visagie was third and the 2011 champion, Brad Beck of NMMU PE, came fourth. Tammy Lee Smith successfully defended her 2011 title and made it a double for Varsity College when she took honours in the Women’s final. Jessica Lee of the University of Cape Town was second with Lisa Mace of the University of Stellenbosch third and Katarina Kern of the University of Cape Town fourth. , At the completion of the annual event USSA officials selected the 2012 USSA Team, which is made up of eight men and four women. The men are Shawn Dennis (Varsity College), Phillip Visagie (UCT), Clinton Gravett (NMMU), Brad Beck (NMMU), Kane Bennewith (Varsity College), Josh Saunders (NMMU), Daniel Wilson (UCT) and Scott le Fevre (Varsi-

ty College). The women members of the team are Tammy Lee Smith (Varsity College), Lisa Mace (Stellenbosch University), Jessica Lee (UCT) and Katarina Kern (UCT).
