Concern over police tower ANNA PAUW

HE fear of health risks linked to the newly erected police radio call tower in Schauderville, forms the core of a memorandum of complaint that will be handed over to Nelson Mandela Bay mayor, Zanoxolo Wayile, by concerned citizens this week. According to a spokesperson for the Schauder/Korsten Action Committee, Romeo Hawkins, the community believes that the tower poses possible health risks and that this is the reason why the original site for the project was abandoned. “From what we’ve heard, affluent residents of the Richmond Hill/ Glendinningvale area, where the 10111 call centre and radio tower would have been built, collected money to conduct a study on the impact thereof on residents.” He said they believed that the result of the study was included in a petition to council, resulting in the building and tower not being erected there. According to news reports some years ago, the remains of the Mfengo’s, who were early Xhosa residents of the area – dating back more than a hundred years – were found on the Richmond Hill erf. This discovery forced the municipality to identify an alternative site for the centre.
Hawkins and the Schauder community, however, are not convinced that this is the real reason why another site was sourced. According to Brig. Marinda Mills, spokesperson for the SAPS, they have done the necessary environmental impact studies. “The studies show there is no risk for people living near the centre,” said Mills. She said a consultative meeting was held with members of the community before building commenced. Werner van der Westhuizen, director of the SOS Children’s Village – accross the road from the call centre site – said they were approached before construction started. “At the time we had no concerns.” He said they’d heard rumours that the radio tower may pose health threats. He wasn’t prepared to comment on this before he had facts proving the rumour to be true or false. According to Mills, the centre should be completed by the end of May 2012. “Thereafter, the SAPS will install the necessary equipment to operationalise the centre.”

Robbers still terrorize Walmer residents Calls for residents to join neighbourhood watch BETTIE GILIOMEE A WALMER mother became one of the latest victims of the spate of house robberies in Walmer after she was assaulted and tied up for more than two hours in her bedroom while she was alone at home with her young daughter. According to the Atlas online crime newsletter, the woman, who lives in Seventh Avenue, Walmer, was woken by four to five thugs who invaded her home during the early hours of March 1. “They overpowered her and tied her up in the bedroom. Due to the shock, the woman failed to fully comply and was slapped around to force her to cooperate,” the newsletter stated. “The thieves proceeded to ransack the house searching for loot. They broke open the safe and went as far as to lift the carpets, hoping to find loot.” The gang then made their way out of the home and fled in the owner’s station wagon, which they crashed not far from the house. They abandoned the vehicle and disappeared on foot. After the robbery, she managed to untie herself and press her panic button. Atlas and the Police were dispatched to the scene to investigate. The PE Express reported on Wednesday, February 29, on the spate of crime, especially house robberies, in the Walmer and Greenshields Park area.
One of the most severe was the brutal rape of an elderly Greenshields Park woman (72) within the perceived safety of her own home at the end of February. The suspects gained access to her home around two o’ clock in the morning by forcing open a security gate. Police found the four suspects and the stolen goods in the nearby Walmer Township later the same day. This attack followed only two days after a domestic worker in Walmer was overpowered by six men, three armed with firearms and three with knives. They made off with stolen goods to the approximate value of R145 000, after they locked the domestic worker in the bathroom. One concerned resident whose mother was attacked and robbed on two separate occasions and who has himself been targeted by thieves on two occasions, Zinn Gubello, has called for residents to join forces and volunteer their services in a neighbourhood watch which he has established. According to Gubello, he has in recent months, before the establishment of the neighbourhood watch, foiled several burglary attempts in his street by patrolling the area when he hears dogs barking in the middle of the night. His concern is the bushes opposite the Greenshields Park area which provide a good escape route for criminals. He said that information he gave police on where these criminals usually hang out, was instrumental in the arrest of the four suspects in connection with the rape of the elderly lady. Walmer police gets arrested for alleged corruption TWO Walmer Police members were arrested on charges of corruption last week after allegedly receiving money from suspects that were arrested in order to persuade the complainants to withdraw the case against them. According to police spokesperson Capt. Sandra Janse van Rensburg, Serg. Zakhumzi Poro (40) from the detective branch at Walmer SAPS was arrested last week Thursday while Const. Simethembile Nqebe (35) was arrested on Friday morning at his residence in Kwadwesi.
Both members appeared in court on Friday. According to Janse Van Rensburg the Commander of Walmer Detectives received information that these members were involved with corrupt activities and he did not hesitate to investigate these allegations. “The SAPS management views corruption by employees in a very serious light and will act swiftly in getting rid of the criminal element within our midst,” said Janse Van Rensburg.

Grey wins Kingswood u15A Waterpolo Shield EXPRESS REPORTER The Grey u15A Waterpolo side did exceptionally well to win the annual Kingswood u15 Shield held in Grahamstown for the 6th consecutive year. The team went unbeaten through the tournament, in which 12 of the top Waterpolo schools from around the Eastern Cape participated. Participating schools included Woodridge, Grey High, Pearson, Alexander Road, Cambridge, Hudson Park, Selborne, Port Rex, St Andrew’s, Graeme, Kingswood and Dale College. The tournament is one of the more demanding on the waterpolo calendar, with no fewer than 7 long games having to be
played in one day. In the pool games the Grey team beat Hudson Park 21 – 0, Cambridge 25 – 0, Port Rex 22 – 0, Woodridge 23 – 1 and St Andrew’s 9 – 4 to progress to the semi-final. Grey then met Pearson in the semi-final and produced a flawless and clinical performance to beat Pearson by 10 goals to 2. Grey continued their dominance in the final, where they faced St Andrew’s College who had convincingly beaten Selborne in the other semi-final by 6 goals to 3. Grey again produced waterpolo of a very high standard and produced their best performance of the day to beat St Andrew’s by a massive 20 goals to 4 – one of the biggest final
scores in the tournament’s history. The Grey side amassed 130 goals in 7 games throughout the day at an average of 19 goals per game. This marks the end of a very successful season which saw the u15A’s win 2 successive tournaments and remain unbeaten in all 31 matches played this term, including matches against men’s teams. The Grey team members are Michael de Marco, Shaun King, Connor Boyd, Jason Evezard (capt.), Connor Timm, Cameron Easton, Dean Carelse (coach), Matt King, Leejay van Niekerk, Tanner Barclay and Ross Edwards. The overall results were: 1st Grey High, 2nd St Andrew’s College and 3rd Selborne and Pearson.

Eastern Cape Tourism Indaba THIS year is proving to be an exciting year for tourism product holders of the Eastern Cape region with March 27 seeing the launch of the first ever Eastern Cape Tourism Indaba, sponsored by The Kouga Companion and Fountains Mall Shopping Mall in Jeffreys Bay. The six-day event will give tourism product holders the opportunity to network and showcase their product, services or establishment along with tour operators, tour guides, local and international travel agencies as well as tourism agencies world-wide. The event will offer all participants the opportunity to attend short tourism-related seminars, as well as talks regarding the path ahead and importance for tourism within the private sector. Displays start from as little as R500 for the entire event. “Tourism product holders of the Eastern Cape simply can’t keep up with the huge financial outlays of attending larger national Indabas” says event organiser Marj Heyman, who was the face behind Kouga Tourism for many years. Heyman and her associate Hank Liebenberg are the driving force behind the Kouga Companion DVD marketing drive. This extensive private marketing campaign has to date seen a staggering 12 000 tourism DVD’s being distributed free of charge worldwide and is as Liebenberg describes “a perfect example of what a small group of dedicated people can achieve despite lack of funding and other minor obstacles”. The Eastern Cape Tourism Indaba will serve as a launch pad for the all new “KOUGA MY KOUGA” DVD documentary which was produced by local filmmakers Ultimate Cut Film Studio, the documentary contains never-beforeseen breathtaking footage of the Kouga region along with up-close
high-definition footage of the indigenous fauna and flora”. This documentary will be launched as part of the Kouga Companion DVD’s already extensive DVD menu, and will be made available to the public, free of charge for the duration of the event. The event will also receive extensive national coverage, including television, radio, print and online coverage. The proceeds of the event will go to further distribution of the Kouga Companion DVD as well as see the development of tourist viewing stations, which are strategically placed interactive viewing stations whereby visitors can access everything they will ever need to know regarding the region they are visiting. In light of the 2012 Eastern Cape Tourism Indaba, African Red Productions will host a fundraising Gala Dinner at the newly opened 7th Sense Restaurant on the evening of March 26. All businesses are invited to participate as the funds raised will be used to upgrade and maintain tourism attractions within the Kouga region. Various items will go on auction so guests are urged to bring their chequebooks and be prepared to have a good time. Bookings are essential and seats will be sold at a minimum of R750 per person. New statistics system boost tourism efforts NELSON Mandela Bay Tourism (NMBT) has tallied the impact of the city’s Summer Season– and for the first time in years the organisation is able to compare its statistics, a system that is a legacy of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. In 2010 NMBT changed its system from recording room occupancies to documenting bed nights, a more accurate means of determining economic impact. “In June this year we will have been capturing this information for two consecutive years which means we can then start comparing year on year as well as by month on month, as we are doing currently,” said NMBT marketing manager, Titus Chuene. “We initially started doing this because there was a lack of local data and we wanted to capture the local economic impact of the World Cup, but the outcome is credible and useful data we can use to effectively market the city.” The statistics show that in December bed night occupancy was up by 5,24% in comparison with December 2010, with the city recording an average of 67.5% bed night occupancy. The 410 accommodation facilities in Nelson Mandela Bay recorded a turnover of R105 million – a R10 million increase since December 2010. “These figures indicate that, despite some doomsayers in the industry lamenting the impact of the global recession, the domestic market was still holidaying during December,” said Chuene. “From our stats the foreign market seems to have declined a little but domestic has increased. “Therefore NMBT is dedicated to lobbying and bidding for the hosting of big events and conferences to increase occupancy levels,” said Chuene.

David Aldo to perform at Boardwalk ONE of Port Elizabeth’s most successful musical sons, David Aldo, will be giving two performances in Port Elizabeth to support his new album, Halfway to Memphis. The concerts presented by Algoa FM are on Friday 30 March and Saturday 31 March 2012 at the Boardwalk Amphitheatre. Now resident in Los Angeles, David is a singer-songwriter who has enjoyed a string of Top Ten hits over the past decade. As part of creating awareness of the valley and to encourage the public to enjoy the area, a fun run, funride and fun walk will take place at Dodds Farm in the valley, at the end of 9th Avenue in Walmer on March 21. Property (mis)management company This week the Property Poser panel addresses a reader’s issue with a property management company. He writes that he ended his homeowners’ association’s (HOA) mandate with the company, which was responsible for administration and accounting services. The HOA had become dissatisfied with the service provider and, despite efforts by the company to improve, the situation became untenable. The relationship was terminated in order to appoint a new property manager. Unfortunately, says the reader, the paperwork handed over to the new person was in an absolute mess. Nothing had been reconciled and all documents were simply placed in a box and delivered. He says the new accountant is unable to reconcile the information provided in this fashion. Despite contacting the former service provider’s superiors, no effort has been made to assist. The reader is concerned that his remedies against the errant company will be frustrated as its manage-
ment is closely involved with the National Association of Managing Agents of South Africa (Namasa). Namasa does make provision for a complaint system by way of a complaint referral, says Charlotte Vermaak from Chas Everitt in Port Elizabeth. “It does, however, sound like the body has been approached for assistance but to no avail.” As a Section 21 company, Vermaak says Namasa’s members would merely have to abide by its rules and, as such, it would probably “lack the teeth” to assist him. “This could become a civil matter against the property management company as it’s a case of failure to perform under a contract.” Vermaak says the HOA would have placed the property management company on terms to perform, failing which notice of cancellation of the agreement would have been given. “If the contract makes provision for an arbitration clause, and assuming this clause is still valid despite the contract being cancelled, it could be used to settle the matter without

Brian is ironman for kids with cancer WHEN local businessman Brian Wilson completed his first Ironman SA three years ago he realised a personal goal. This year when Ironman SA takes place in PE on April 22, he will be participating to realise the goals of the Oncology Ward at the Red Cross War Memorial Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospital in Cape Town. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My first triathlon was an offroad event in November 2007 and it was my birthday present to myself â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a challenge to get my-

self fit. In the process I lost over 40kg from 130kg to 90kg. In 2009 I did my first Ironman,â&#x20AC;? said Wilson. Wilson is married to wife Lee and has two children, Andrew (9) and Kirsten (6). â&#x20AC;&#x153;Kirsten is registered for the IronKids and she is very upset that she canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do the Ironman with me. Probably a good thing, I think she could beat me,â&#x20AC;? said Wilson. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My family will be out on the course on race day cheering and I hope that I will finish early enough for them to cross the finish line with me,â&#x20AC;? said Wilson. Wilson hopes to raise at least R80 000. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For every R80 donation each donor can give one name which will be screenprinted on my race jersey to honour someone they know who has suffered from cancer. The goal is 1 000 names. This can be in memorial to someone who has passed away or in honour of someone who has fought cancer and won, or in support of someone who is currently fighting cancer. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Once the race is over, the jersey will be cleaned, framed and given to the Oncology Unit to go on a wall in the unit in honour of those whose names are on it. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I am a big believer in Livestrong and the Lance Armstrong Foundationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s efforts in fighting cancer and their support for victims and their families. I would love to establish Livestrong in South Africa one day. I chose the Oncology Unit at the Red Cross War Memorial Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospital because I have seen in
family and friends how terrible cancer can be and I feel that it is particularly cruel to children who are not old enough to understand what is happening to them. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My grandfather, Hugh Gardner, was a huge influence in my life and he passed away from cancer and I have had several other friends and associates that have passed away due to cancer or have fought or are fighting it. My goal outside of the fundraising was to honour these people and also to raise awareness.â&#x20AC;? The Red Cross War Memorial Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospital manages over 250 000 patient visits each year. These patients are from throughout South Africa and from countries beyond our borders. The Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospital Trust is a non-profit organisation which relies entirely on the generosity of its donors to realise its aims and objectives. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In addition to the donation in honour of cancer victims, I am also willing to take up challenge donations by anyone wishing to push me to better my personal best Ironman time of 16:10:02s, which I established in 2009. I would like to finish in fewer than 14 hours this year and could use all the help I can get to push me in this direction,â&#x20AC;? said Brian. Ironman requires participants to swim 3.8km, cycle 180km and run 42.2km within a 17-hour time limit. Alumni beat students in netball final AGE triumphed over youth as the NMMU 1 alumni beat the NMMU 3 students 14-10 in a closely contested A-section final at the SPAR-NMMU Netball Tournament in Port Elizabeth on Saturday. The season-opener, which took place at the universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Second Avenue Campus, attracted a record 53 teams from across the metro. Although the students led by a goal at halftime, it was experience that eventually won the day for a strong senior side, which featured former Protea players Zanele Mdodana and Lana Krige. Mdodana represented South Africa at last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s World
Cup, while Krige is a former vice-captain of the national team and current SPARNMMU head coach. In the other pool finals, Framesby demolished NMMUâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s second-tier team 31-4 in the A-reserve section, while Despatch took the B section from NMMU 1 in a narrow 1512 win. Valencia beat Malherbe 1 (21-13) for victory in section C, with KwaMagxaki topping pool D ahead of Otto du Plessis (11-5). In the menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s league, NMMU once again dominated with NMMU 1 trouncing NMMU 2 (19-10) to take the top spot. Players in the winning sides received prize money in the form of SPAR gift vouchers to a total value of R7 200. The universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s netball chairperson Melinda Goosen said the tournament, which had grown substantially due to SPARâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s involvement over the past three years, was the clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s biggest event of the season. Action packed Splash festival should see many of South Africa’s top participants given that it’s an Olympic year and the Splash Festival event will be part of the SA Teams Olympic Qualification. This event has become increasingly popular and is well spoken of internationally. In the water, two feature events will be the Madiba Bay Classic surf ski race and the Bell Buoy Challenge. The Surf Ski race, which takes place on Easter Friday, has, for the past three years, attracted a world class field with World Champion Dawid Mocke the defending champion. In the water, the Bell Buoy swim has become known as one of the toughest open water swims in the world as participants tackle the daunting open water between Hobie Beach and the Bell Buoy some 2.5km directly off Pollok Beach in this epic 8km swim, which has featured many top international swimmers, including world champions Petar Stoychev and Melissa Gorman. An exciting new addition to the programme will be the inclusion of a Beach Touch Rugby Tournament with prospective teams asked to contact Christo Botha at 0 072 238 4463. The tournament will be a knock-out event with plate and cup rounds. Also to be featured this year will be Beach Tennis and a fun Kids’ Easter Run on Easter Sunday with lots of Easter egg prizes up for grabs for children 12 years and under. Easter Sunday will also feature the Izani Siqubhe Swim. This will be a 1km ocean swim which is open to all and provides the opportunity for our international participants to rub shoulders with the swimmers of the Masa-

With just weeks to go till the Easter Weekend, the much delayed and anticipated program for the 2012 Splash Festival is about to be launched as new organisers are to be appointed for this year. Unacceptable delays by the Metro in appointing the organisers are sure to impact severely on the Festival as the organisers will have less than 3 weeks to try to put together Africa’s largest 4-day festival. The water sport program, which has been a key feature of the festival over the past couple of seasons, is still attracting a key interest from participants nationally and internationally and the only question now is will these participants be able to secure flights and accommodation at such late notice. A key feature on the Beach Events program for the Splash Festival will be the South African Beach Volleyball tournament which has been one of the most popular sports events in the festival for the past 20 years. This year

khane Future Stars from the Motherwell suburb. Easter Monday will conclude with the King & Queen of the Bay lifesaving events. These exciting elimination-style events include swimming, Malibu board, beach sprints and beach flags, which drew a great crowd of spectators last year. Six world champions, 20 races – this is TALKING F1
BY NATALIE LE CLUE NO more guessing, no more speculation, no more waiting. Countless kilometres and many months later we are on the cusp of the 2012 Formula 1 season. In all of its history only two drivers (Fangio and Schumacher) have managed to win three consecutive world titles. In 2012 Sebastian Vettel will try to emulate his childhood idols. To achieve this amazing feat he will have at his disposal an F1 car designed by, arguably, the best designer of his generation – Adrian Newey.
It’s no surprise that the RB8 looked straight out of the box in Jerez. Undoubtedly the car will undergo many changes in time for the Australian GP but there are some fundamental aspects of the RB8 that have already caught the eye. The ‘stepnose’ design of the RB8 looks relatively similar to the rest of the field with the exception of an intake in the step. Newey maintains that it’s merely there to cool the driver. It’s been suggested that the air intake could be serving as a channel for relaying air towards the rear of the car. Whatever the purpose of the slot may be, it’s highly unlikely that it is there solely for driver cooling. Ferrari’s first pre-season test left Technical Director Pat Fry underwhelmed, prompting the Englishman to divulge that the team would have to make big improvements if it wished to fight for victory off the bat. The man under most pressure at the Italian squad is Felipe Massa. Two lacklustre seasons has done little to convince the pundits that he is deservedly in the second Ferrari seat. His
‘number two’ tag is going to stick for a while and this may well be the Brazilian’s last season at the Scuderia. On the other side of the garage, Alonso has to find some way to make the Ferrari talk. He is after all, in the words of Ferrari’s Di Montezemolo, a driver who is able to rally the team around him and push them to do great things. Alonso is a great allround driver with great presence of mind when it comes to pumping in that one flying lap in qualifying, great consistency over long-runs and most importantly a desire to win. McLaren have bucked the trend by opting for an arched nose as opposed to the ‘step nose’ that most other teams are sporting. It may be a stroke of genius or a complete catastrophe or it may not matter at all. The MP427 has looked competitive and Lewis Hamilton, buoyant. The former champ’s 2011 season was disastrous by his standards. Lewis’s preparation for 2012 has to focus on getting his mind in the best place possible and, importantly, keeping it there. He is a driver of immense talent and one capable of turning it on at the drop-of-a-
hat; but Lewis is also very much a confidence driver. Momentum is crucial and coupled with a mega fast, error-free Hamilton – its dynamite. Jenson Button may well turn out to be the dark-horse of the season. That’s if you can call the runner-up in 2011 a dark-horse. It’s incredibly hard not to be romantic about JB considering the majestic way he swept to his three victories last season. He has a real feel not only for his McLaren race car but for the team – a winning combination. Count him out at your peril. The two teams with the potential to surprise this season are Mercedes and Lotus. The Mercedes team has been the fourth best team consistently and it’s not going to take a massive push for them to challenge for podium positions. As for the drivers – despite Michael Schumacher’s ‘lacklustre’ performances – the pressure will be more on the younger Rosberg. This season will mark his seventh in the sport and it’s way past time for Nico to step up his game. A handful of podiums after six years of racing hasn’t
prompted anyone to rank Nico as a ‘great’ driver. He’s just…solid. For Rosberg to be highly rated he has to drive the wheels off the Mercedes and drag it into positions where it is not supposed to be. If not, Nico may become just another also-ran. The Lotus team has praised Raikkonen’s work ethic and approachability since the Finn joined the team. As far as the Iceman is concerned, his motivation has never been higher; stating bullishly that he will not give up the fight regardless of his position. It seems the two years spent competing in the World Rally Championship have returned a refreshed Raikkonen to F1. Kimi Raikkonen topped the timing sheets on the final day of pre-season testing; but it’s never a good idea to read anything into these times. Nevertheless, the long-run pace of Raikkonen and his Lotus was staggeringly consistent – an indicator that the car’s behaviour is predictable, always a good sign. The wait has been long but it has not been in vain. For the first time in the history of F1, six world champions will line up on the grid. It seems that top-spot will be fought for by Red Bull and McLaren; but don’t settle too comfortably on this theory.

ON the field, cricket is the strictest of games; the most unforgiving. One moment of lost concentration, and you’re gone. A Test match is played over five days. However, even over such an extended period, strength of character, resolution not to give in can produce an honourable draw. But then there’s the dreaded announcement: Match Abandoned due to rain. This was the case in Dunedin last weekend, and not even the fine performances – centuries from Graeme Smith, the two Jacques, Kallis and Rudolf, or the bowling of Steyn, Philander, Tahir and Morne Morkel, not forgetting the equally tenacious efforts of the New Zealand Black caps, could prevail against the dreaded rain. There is no extra time. That’s as it should be; those are the rules. What a pity that cricket off the field, particularly in our own country at this moment, isn’t as fresh and clean as the white flannels the players wear. “Due Process” is a legal term that must be obeyed to the letter. Part of the process presently being conducted requires a commission of enquiry set up to probe allegations of corruption during Cricket South Africa’s running of the Indian Premier League competi-
tion some years back and make recommendations for further action. Legally, this is regarded as the right way to do things. More’s the pity, for the next step in “due process” states that in addition to decisions/recommendations by the Sports Minister, the CSA (Cricket South Africa) must also have its say. This, despite the fact, that already the CSA allegedly is rotten to the core; its top brass in total disgrace. How can a body that has allegedly been shown, prior to Justice Nicholson’s inquiry, to have manipulated CSA affairs to huge personal gain for its top brass, be tasked with inspecting its own apparently odious navel? Most commentators believe the right thing to do – an action which would have satisfied all with the game of cricket at heart – would have been to fire the lot; start over from scratch with men of principle and proven worth. But there’s still hope. It’s up to the Minister to take a firm stand. It would certainly please true cricket lovers, who these days must be wondering whether the Fifties hit by the Andrews Sisters, “Money is the root of all evil” didn’t have it right. The lyrics went on to proclaim: “Won’t contaminate myself with it/Take it away, take it away/ take it away!” On the Super Rugby field, South Africa didn’t do all that well, but it was nice to see the Sharks getting back into gear with their first 32-20 win against the Lions in Durban. It must be said though that the withdrawal of Lions playmaker and kicker, Elton Jantjies, before kickoff, didn’t help the cause of Josh Strauss’s team. Hard luck for the Cheetahs to have lost their first game on tour Down Under by a single point 24-23 to Brumbies. As for the Bulls (29-23 defeat at Loftus) – ragged, often sadly disorganised, is all that can be said.

Residents show mettle with medals PE EXPRESS REPORTER THE residents of Lake Farm Centre have been working hard to ensure that there are more than enough medals for all the participants for this year’s Bukani Print Adidas Lake Farm Charity Run in association with Die Burger and Bay FM on Saturday, March 17. “Most of the adults who reside at the centre are mentally and often physically challenged but
they don’t hesitate to help and have been moulding, painting and sewing ribbons to two thousand medals in anticipation for the event,” said Media Liaison Carol-Anne Cash. The Lake Farm Charity Run will take place at the Centre in Lakeside Road and caters for the entire family by offering a 25km run starting at 7am; a 10km walk/run at 7.15am and a 5km fun run at 8.30am. All finishers in the events will be given a special medal handmade by the resi-
dents. The Nedbank Wag Walk has also been added to the event for pet lovers and their owners on a 2.5km trail on Lake Farm Centre’s picturesque farmlands. The entry per person is R20 and people and their furry friends can enter and walk the route at Lake Farm Centre on the morning of the race anytime from 8am until 11.30am. Entry forms and information are available at leading sports stores or on the website www.lakefarm.org.za.
