PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT IN LORRAINE
Residents object against centre Councillor, residents are against shopping centre on their doorstep MONIQUE BASSON
A
PROPOSED development in Lorraine that will be home to Checkers, Clicks and various other convenience stores has stirred up the wrath of several residents and the councillor of the area. Although the developer and owner, Braam Lamprectht, believes that the new shopping centre will facilitate growth in the value of the properties in the immediate vicinity and improve demand, DA Ward 8 Councillor, Gustav Rautenbach, and over 50 residents are against a shopping centre right on their doorstep. “I have received over 50 objections from residents who do not want the development of the shopping centre to take place,” said Rautenbach. Objections include an increase in the noise level and traffic, especially public transport. “Another point of concern is that the developer has applied for Council’s Special Consent to permit a place of amusement, like a barnyard-type theatre, with up to 450 seats,” said Rautenbach. If approved, the 6 200 square metres shopping centre will take shape on Erf 329 in Verdun Road, at the back of the existing Spar. According to Gordon Winning, speaking on behalf of Lamprectht, the shopping centre is geared to be a two-phased development, with phase one closest to the existing Spar complex and phase two adjacent to the existing Parkhurst townhouse complex. The portion of land for the first phase had already been rezoned for business purposes in 2008, while the portion of land intended to be used for phase two is still zoned as residential.

Centrestage in Barn with new music show A BRAND-new Centrestage musical cabaret show devised by Gary Hemmings and entitled The Nuvo Retro Topsy Turvy Music Show runs for two nights at the Barn this Thursday (February 16) and Saturday (February 18).

According to Hemmings, the show promises to deliver a package of unusual surprises as musical styles, arrangements and time periods are turned on their heads. “I have always been fascinated by interesting new takes on traditional
well-known songs, as I believe that the magic often resides in their specific treatment or arrangement”, says Hemmings. “Imagine if the songs you have learned to love were suddenly transcended into completely different styles or were transformed into the fashion of an entirely different era. “How would Elvis have sung the hits of today? What would Lady Gaga have sounded like if she was actually born in the fifties? What if rock n roll became jazz – pop became soul - boybands and girl-bands swapped identi-
ties?” The Nuvo Retro Topsy Turvy Music Show examines these potentials in a swashbuckling mash-up of medleys as the modern song book is given a complete work-over and presented in a novel and highly entertaining light. Also heading up the bandstand are big band arrangements and remixes made famous by the likes of Michael Buble, Paul Anka and Richard Cheese. The NRTT music show features a power-packed line-up of much-loved local Centrestage stars, including
this year’s Showtime best actress award winner Donna Africa and the popular and suave Thuba Myeki. Escape heart throb Jace Bowren is also joined by blonde bombshell Tara-Jane Metzler, who returns to her home town after a stint in Cape Town. 18-year old Free State singing sensation Izzy Van Zyl makes a guest appearance on the show, filling the same role which saw Thuba Myeki being introduced to PE audiences for the first time in Centrestage’s previous ensemble show Divas are Forever. Volgens Viviers gaan elke sent wat ingesamel word aangewend word om haar mediese kostes te dek asook te help met die rekonstruksie van haar liggampie. Viviers beoog om minstens dertig soortgelyke vertonings regoor die land vir Pippe te doen met sangers wat heeltemal gratis sal optree. Bekende plaaslike sangers wat by die Baaise konsert sal optree sluit in Viviers (Dan Vaux ), Robert Gillmer, Patrick Lindoor, JJ Botha, Monique Botha, Monique van Driel en Ruan van der Kuil. Residents object against new Lorraine shopping centre Continued from page 1 . . . “This is a huge contention because this erf has what does not or should not exist: dual zoning - both for Special Business and Residential 2. We have taken this issue up with the council, but we will, however, still retain a small element of residential property as a buffer to the existing residential area,” said Winning. Rautenbach said, “I do not have a problem should the whole portion of land be utilised for residential properties, but definitely not a business portion. Should this application be approved, it will create a precedent and the Lorraine Spatial Development Framework Plan will not be worth the paper it is written on.” The first phase, which is in the region of 4 400 square metres, will be launched around September this year. “We have already started with excavations and believe this is an improvement for the residents of the immediate areas. Focus will be
on convenience, creating utility for residents to avoid having to travel considerable distances to do their monthly and convenience shopping,” said Winning. Once finished, the centre will boast national tenants Checkers – who will open a blue line store of approximately 3 000 square metres, plus a Checkers liquor store – and Clicks. “A number of smaller convenience stores will initially support this anchor structure with a post office, flower boutique, small clothing store and a video outlet with ATM’s focused around the entrance to the Checkers Supermarket,” said Winning. “The second phase will hopefully launch the demand of selected national stores that we best think will suit the area and the demographics, concentrating on a smaller Woolworth’s franchise and perhaps encouraging a Wimpy or larger national restaurant group to participate.” According to Rautenbach, the building plans must still be approved.

PE included in worldwide Swimarathon to set new world record PE EXPRESS REPORTER NOT only is Port Elizabeth renowned for its friendliness, but its kindness should also never be underestimated! The City now has the golden opportunity to participate in the worldwide Rotary Global Swimarathon. Through this exciting event, Rotary aims to raise funds towards Rotary International’s worldwide project to eradicate Polio. For the past 22 years the Rotary Club of Grantham, England, has held a highly successful “Rotary Swimarathon”, raising money for local charities and deserving causes. In 2012 they are holding an extra event in the form of a Rotary Global Swimarathon – setting a new world record for the most number of people swimming at the same time anywhere in the world. The number currently stands at 2 533. The event will take place on Saturday, February 25 at 2pm (South African time) at the Newton Park Swimming Pool on the corner or
Worraker Street and Third Avenue. To qualify for the world record attempt, swimmers will have to swim just 100 metres without stopping within the hour. There will be an entrance fee of R20 per person, which will all go to the Rotary Foundation, which will assist the campaign to rid the world of Polio. People who are not able to participate, can sponsor a swimmer(s) and donations are always welcome. Event Chairman, Roger Graves, said that through the Global Swimarathon they hope to set a new world record; raise funds towards the elimination of Polio; increase the awareness of Rotary and encourage more people to swim and stay fit. So far registrations for the event have been received from New Zealand, Australia, The Philippines, South Africa, Hong Kong, Portugal, India, USA, Canada, Croatia and the United Kingdom and entries are increasing daily. EP Centre wil host first Mother and Daughter tea THIS Saturday the Ray Mhlaba Skills Centre at the EP Child and Youth Care Centre will host their first ever Mother and Daughter High Tea. Antony and Cleopatra staged at Opera House VANDALISM of the Mannville Theatre in St George’s Park has resulted in the 40th Anniversary of Shakespeare in the park not being staged at this outdoor theatre, but in the PE Opera House. The Port Elizabeth Shakespearen Festival presented the PE première of Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra last night. According to Linda-Louise Swain of the PE Shakespearean Festival, the production will not take place in Mannville, as the park venue has been vandalized, making it almost impossible to be used. “The PE Opera house has come to the rescue and has made the Main Theatre available for one week so that the anniversary celebration can go ahead as planned,” said Linda-Louise. Direction of this anniversary production will be done by award-winning former PE director, Themi Venturas, who returns to his hometown for the celebration. Venturas has directed three of the last 40 Shakespearean plays in the Park and is remembered for his innovative productions of Hamlet and Macbeth.
The play stars Helen Flax as Cleopatra, and Andrew Horne as Antony, with stalwarts Jeremy Baylis and André Lemmer as Enobarbus and Lepidus respectively. The role of Octavius Caesar will be portrayed by newcomer Andrew White. Venturas’s production of the classic love story takes place against a modern setting in which both Rome and Egypt are stylistic ideas rather than actual places, with Rome being a place of businesslike, disciplined restraint, whilst Egypt is a hedonistic, sensuous and relaxed contrast that seduces Antony and his men away from the ‘stuck up‘ Rome. With an audio-visual backdrop that brings all the latest technology, the audience will see messengers appearing through Skype and battles being reported by CNN, bringing the production an air of immediacy and contemporary relevance. It will run until February 19. Performances will take place nightly at 7pm, except for the 3pm matinee on February 19. School bookings can be made with Helen Wilkins at 0 041 581 1738.

Gilbert and Sullivan Society holds auditions for Evita The Gilbert and Sullivan Society have announced that their major show, to be staged in May this year, will be the smash hit Evita by Andrew, Baron Lloyd Webber and Sir Tim Rice. They have secured the talents of PE’s own Chireen Ferreira to play Eva. Since starring in their 2007 production of Footloose, Chireen has toured internationally and become a seasoned professional. Evita will be directed by Robin Williams with choreography by Candice Johnstone and musical direction by Richard Campbell. David Limbert will create his lighting magic and Paula Martin will be Technical Manager.
For the rest of the cast, singing auditions will be held on Friday, February 24 from 6pm, and the dance audition on Saturday, February 25, at the Savoy Theatre. The cast of Evita calls for people of all ages, shapes and sizes, and experience is not required. They are looking for people who can sing their hearts out as well as singer/dancers. Everyone auditioning will need to do a singing and a movement audition although there are roles for non-dancers in the show. Voedsel, wyn en kaasfees kom Baai toe PORT Elizabeth gaan binnekort gasheer speel vir die grootste voedsel-, wyn- en kaasfees wat tot nog toe hier gehou is. Die Nelson Mandelabaai Voedsel-, Wyn- en Kaasfees, wat met die ondersteuning van Nelson Mandelabaai Toerisme aangebied word, is soortgelyk aan “The Good Food and Wine Show”, wat jaarliks in Johannesburg, Durban en Kaapstad gehou word en deur derduisende mense besoek word. Die organiseerders van die plaaslike fees verwag sowat 35 000 besoekers vanoor die metro en omstreke oor die feestydperk. Die fees begin om 1nm. op Donderdag, 29 Maart tot Sondag, 1 April. Die program, wat ontwerp is om die hele gesin te pas, is propvol interessanthede met wyn en kaas, whiskey en kaas asook brandewyn en sjokolade wat geproe word. Verder is daar sowat 300 stalletjies gelaai met
kos, kaas en wyn vir wie ook al wil eet, proe en drink. Voedselvoorbereiding en koskook-demonstrasies deur bekende sjefs vind ook deur die dag plaas en behoort vir die meeste dames en mans wat die kombuis geniet, ’n groot trekpleister te wees. Die kinders (2 tot 6 jaar en 7 tot 18 jaar) kan heerlik baljaar in twee speelparke, terwyl die ouers hulself in vyf reusagtige markiestente geniet. Die fees word op die rugbyvelde van die Hoërskool D.F. Malherbe in Walmer gehou. Donderdag is die toegangkaartjies vir kinders tot 16 jaar oud en ligaamlik gestremdes gratis. Volwassenes en studente betaal op Donderdag slegs R30. Vanaf Vrydag tot Sondag is die toegang duurder. Kaartjies kan by Computicket bespreek word of by die hekke gekoop word.
Valentine’s cabaret staged at Savoy THE annual PE Gilbert & Sullivan Society Valentine’s full stage cabaret is now in its fourth year and this year they have four performances of the production named “All you need is love” at the Savoy Theatre. The first performance was last night, with the other performances scheduled for tonight, as well as on Friday and Saturday at 7.30pm. As the society’s major fundraiser for the year, everyone involved gives their time and talent for the cause and the concept has proven to be a light-hearted winner with audiences. This year Rose Cowpar once again directs a talented line-up of performers singing and dancing their way through some all-time favourite songs. The programme will take patrons on a tour of Broadway, as well as a trip down memory lane. As usual the seating is cabaret style at tables, so all the audience needs to do is sit, sing along and enjoy a drink or two while they snack on their own picnic baskets. This year G&S has introduced a dance floor and the show is designed to get audiences up out of their seats for everything from a slow dance to a partying final act. The list of numbers is definitely not all
schmaltzy love songs, as the tempos vary widely through items such as Come Fly With Me, Valerie, Copacabana, It’s Raining Men, Dream a Little Dream, Teenage Dream, L.O.V.E, Somewhere Out There and, naturally, All You Need is Love. This year’s cast features some familiar faces from the 2011 G & S productions. Ace Magxaki appears fresh from his stellar performances lead performances in Beauty and the Beast, Legends of Broadway and Oklahoma! and recently was named as the of this year’s Showtime Award for Best Actor in a Musical. Anton Crouse appeared in Oklahoma! and returns for his second Valentine’s Cabaret. Melissa Jantjies, the giggling Gertie in Oklahoma!, and 2011 G&S Best Novice Chorus Award winner, Jade du Toit, are joined by their fellow cast member from Legends of Broadway. Pocket powerhouse Mandisa Tiso, Bennie Gerber, Cecile Jansen and Stephen Coetzee, who appeared in Fiela’s Child, are also along for the ride and resident musical director, Richard Campbell, steps out in style to sing a couple of numbers. Ná afloop van die wedstryd was die uitnodigingspan (ses spelers van Framesby en twee spelers van die Hoërskool D.F. Malherbe) met ’n kortkop voor St. Stithians van Gauteng, gevolg deur Grey 1, St. Johns van Gauteng en Grey 2. Op 4 Februarie is daar op Humewood se gholfbaan gespeel. Die uitnodigingspan het nie baie goed gespeel nie en teruggesak tot die derde plek, waar hulle ook ná die Sondag (5 Februarie) se enkelspelwedstryde geëindig het, naas Grey 1 en St. Stithians se spanne. Hando Brophy, J.C. Ellis en Visser Smit, het veral goed gespeel met Hando wat Sondag ’n 69 op sy telkaart ingevul het. Hando was nie tydens Saterdag se wedstryd beskikbaar nie, aangesien hy aan die OP-klubbyeenkoms se uitdunrondte van die halfeindstryd in St. Francisbaai deelgeneem het. PE’s prolific open water swimming siblings, Wayne, Jason and Daniel Jones are all entered for Sunday’s River Mile and will be expected to feature high up in the top 10. The SPAR Redhouse River Mile, taking place this weekend at Cannonville on the Sundays River, is expected to draw thousands of people to the region. By close of entries on Sunday, over 800 entrants had secured their place for this historic
event, with at least another 200 late entries expected before Sunday morning. Wayne Jones has dominated the Dis-Chem 2km and 3km swims at this year’s Weekend Post Ocean Racing Series and will now go head to head with his brothers. Jason has been dominating the Dis-Chem 1km swim with Daniel a consistent second in this event. The River Mile is swum over the ‘Metric Mile’ distance of 1.5km with an incoming tide which makes it better suited to the speedy shorter distance open water swimmers. All three Billson sisters are also entered for the Ladies’ Mile with Durban-based Carmel Billson keen to defend her title, whilst Lauren and Natalie may have plans of their own to ensure that they are high on the podium this weekend. The unknown element in both the Mile events is how the pool swimmers will feature against the more experienced open water swimmers. Three-times defending champion, Olympic
swimmer Chad Ho, is an uncertain entrant for the weekend following his record-breaking third consecutive win at last Sunday’s Midmar Mile. Ho, who has yet to qualify for the 2012 Olympics, needs to rest ahead of a hectic training schedule and may have to miss out on defending his title this year. All the action starts from 8am on Sunday morning at the Cannonville slipway, Colchester with vendors, stalls, kids entertainment and a Castle Lite Beer Garden to add to the festivities.

BY NATALIE LE CLUE Step one, design. Step two, build. Step three ...Test. There are few more important moments for an F1 team than when their challenger takes to the track for the very first time. The first of the pre-season tests was run at the Jerez circuit in Spain over the last week. Despite the ageold warning that not too much should be read into the relative performances during the tests, some important pieces of information that
form part of the 2012 puzzle, were revealed. Ferrari’s on-track performance didn’t quite live up to expectation if the likes of Felipe Massa and technical director Pat Fry are to be believed. The latter revealed that the F2012 suffered no major reliability issues throughout the test. Yet, he emphasized that the team would have to work hard to improve car performance which Fry rated as just ‘okay.’ While the Ferrari brains trust opted for a cautious outlook, Fernando Alonso has promised that the team will arrive at the second pre-season test in Barcelona in much better shape. McLaren had a trouble-free test session and both Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button were playing
their cards close to their chest. The MP4-27’s lap times hovered around the midfield region on the timing sheets. Like most other drivers, Hamilton peddled caution to what he described as a ‘positive start’ to the season. Though he was coy about the performance of the new McLaren, he did reveal that they were ‘aggressive’ with the fuel loads; suggesting that the team had run the car on low fuel for some part of the testing session. While most of the 2012 challengers are evolutions of their 2011 counterparts, there are some aspects that teams will have to focus their attention on. The ban of the rear blown diffuser, and subsequent loss of rear downforce, is a particular area where teams such as McLaren are trying to claw back the deficit.
Despite being focused on his task of putting the MP4-27 through its paces, Hamilton was nevertheless keeping a close eye on his prospective competitors. “I think you can see the Red Bull looks quick. The Lotus looks quite impressive,” he said. Creating that impression, was returning world champion Kimi Raikkonen. Two years of participation in the World Rally Championship seemed like nothing more than an interlude to the Finn’s F1 career. Despite setting the fastest overall time on day one, the ’07 champ dismissed the meaningless lap times. “It makes no difference,” he said. “The feeling is pretty OK with the car and for sure I’ve had much worse first days and worse feelings with new cars,” he added. “I was quite happy

Can the Kings wear the crown?
AN intro in journalistic terms is the opening sentence or paragraph of a piece. Sometimes clever, often they’re contrived without any true relation to what follows. To avoid that trap let’s jump straight in at the deep-end. Alan Solomons is an internationally revered rugby coach. Any number of world rugby’s best coaches will gladly attest to that. In taking on the curatorship of the EP Kings, the highly rated rugby guru has let himself in for the toughest task of his career. Facing a demanding season in which, realistically, the EP Kings at the very least should aim to emerge top dogs in the Currie Cup B Section. This they failed to do in 2011, losing the final to Boland, who last week were hammered by the Sharks in Durban, 62-0. That’s how tough this season is going to be for the Kings as they gear themselves to take SARU up on its promise that in 2013, come hell or high water, the Kings will take their place among the elite of the South African conference of the Super Rugby competition involving ourselves, New Zealand and Australia. Solomons has several fine players at his disposal. At home in PE last week the Kings remained competitive for some while. With stalwarts like prop Jaco Engel showing the way, the pack stuck to their task for much of the game. Then, too, the likes of Norman Nelson, scoring the Kings’ only try, showed pace and also courage on defence, fol-
lowing the example of fullback Tiger Mangweni. Solomons’ problems weren’t made any easier by the withdrawal of captain Luke Watson, with a shoulder injury. It goes without saying, too, that the flanker’s industry and experience were crucially missed. It’s uncertain whether he’ll be available for Saturday’s friendly, once more at home, in a match the Kings will be hoping will yield them a better result than the hiding Boland suffered. Meanwhile let’s hope SARU are able to persuade their Super Rugby partners to allow a sixth SA team in the competition. Otherwise... well, you know what they say about promises. It’s sad but often they’re “made to be broken”. Because there isn’t any other decent way out of the grave SARU, through injudicious laying of its head on a block, has dug for itself. Okay, let’s relax a little now. Did you watch rugby last Saturday from early morning Sevens in Las Vegas to the cancellation of the France-Ireland Six Nations game on a virtual ice-skating rink in Paris? Some of us did. Did you pick up the difference between a Top 14 game on a literally frozen surface between Montclair and Racing, with SA players names swarming out of the woodwork on both sides? There was burly Springbok fullback Francois Steyn doing a great job for Racing, but to no avail as a tiny fair-haired fellow with a cheeky blond moustache scored the try that counted for Montclair. Who was that? Who else but one-test Springbok Brent Russell. What a match! So full of movement and vigour. How dull by comparison was the Bulls-Cheetahs friendly in Polokwane. In perfect conditions, long high kicks dominated with hardly a single pass in the first 10 minutes. Test rugby, of course, is different. England looked for some while that they might slip on the Italian banana peel. However they just managed to hang on to win, and it was nice to see centre Brad Barrett and lock Mouritz Botha distinguish themselves again in Paris.

Discover(y) trail running on Sunday SUNDAY sees a fun and exciting Discovery 5km trail run taking place at Sundays River, Colchester when thousands of people head for the 88th SPAR Redhouse River Mile. Kicking off the day’s activities at 8am will be a 5km off-road fun run which is open to all. The run is followed at 9am by an off-road triathlon which consists of a 500m swim, a 15km MTB cycle and a 5km Trail Run, and is suitable
for teams (of three) or individuals. All proceeds from the triathlon will be going towards the Rotary Club of PE Sunrise. Supported by Discovery Consulting Services in Port Elizabeth, the off-road events are expected to draw over 100 participants with local runner, Lwazi Mgidi, and EP triathlon champion, Liza Bright, the early favourites to take the 5km trail run titles. Close on R4 000 in prize money is on offer for the winning individuals, juniors and teams
this year and organisers will be hoping to attract entries into the team categories to introduce more people to the fun and exciting sport which is triathlon. “We’re looking forward to an action-packed and exciting day at Sundays River which offers an awesome day out for the whole family,” said event organiser, Mike Zoetmulder.
