No dignity for loved ones at cemetery ZELDRÉ SWANEPOEL

HE past Mothers’ Day renewed the mounting frustrations of visitors to the Forest Hill cemetery. Noleen Jonck and her family had to take it upon themselves to cut the tall grass surrounding the graves of their parents on Mothers’ Day. Her parents who passed away ten and two years ago respectively, are buried in one grave. “We had to remove the tall grass so that the grave could look presentable before the grandchildren came to put flowers on the grave. We couldn’t let them see the grave like that. “It’s already heartbreaking to have lost our loved ones, and to have their last resting place look so untidy makes it more heartbreaking. Our loved ones deserve some dignity,” she said. Jonck said she questioned the caretaker about the condition of the cemetery and he told her there was no funding for cutting the grass regularly. “We have paid for this plot and as rate payers we expect it to be maintained. Surely there was a budget set aside for the maintenance and upkeep of the cemetery? So how can it be said that there is no money for cutting the grass?” Jonck asked. Jackie Serfontein’s son, Divan (14), was buried in the Forest Hill cemetery in December last year; and her main concern is the cows grazing in the unfenced cemetery, damaging the tombstones and also feeding on the flowers on the graves.

Photo: DIE BURGER ARCHIVES “There are also heaps of sand that have not been flattened yet, giving the cemetery overall an untidy look,” she said. “There used to be a staff of about 19; and now there are only two caretakers. How can two people take care of a cemetery of that size?” she asked. in. Seeing our child’s grave this badly damaged was very traumatic for my husband and me. Our son passed away only five months ago and we come to his grave to spend time with him; and seeing the cemetery in such a mess does not provide the peace and tranquillity we go to find there.” Ward 2 DA Councillor, Dean Biddulph, who is aware of the issues regarding the cemetery, is currently working on a solution. “The ongoing concerns around the state of all cemeteries within the metro is something which we are
desperately trying to resolve. The situation is further aggravated by the current cash crisis and lack of sufficient budget allocations,” Biddulph said. “As someone who also has a family member interred in a municipal cemetery, I understand and empathise with the many residents for whom the current situation amounts to a slap in the face of the memory of their loved ones,” said Biddulph. “In an effort to try to find solutions to the problems, I met with the senior metro official for cemeteries three weeks ago and personally took a tour of the Forest Hill cemetery. Certain interventions have been agreed to and a number of these will be addressed now that the Adjustments Budget has been approved. “I have also brought the situation to the attention of both the Executive Director for Public Health and also the Acting Municipal Manager. I remain committed to doing whatever I can to ensure that the memory of our loved ones is respected and accorded the dignity that they deserve.” said Biddulph In March Die Burger reported that the Municipal spokesperson, Kupido Baron, had said that the only lasting solution for the problem with the cows would be to erect permanent fencing. “To put fencing around all the municipal cemeteries would cost approximately R40 million. That is a lot of money to spend if we don’t know for certain how long it will be before the fence is damaged again,” Baron said at the time.

Northern Lights celebrate 30 years ZELDRÉ SWANEPOEL THE Northern Lights Special School in Cotswold will be celebrating its 30th anniversary this year with a number of events. The school, which opened its doors in 1982 with just five learners and one teacher, is now a complete institution with pre-primary classes to matric. For many consecutive years they have had a proud record of 100% matric pass rate. The first event on the celebrations calendar
is a thanksgiving service and tea at the Weiss Memorial Church in Schauderville on May 27 at 2pm. “We are inviting all the former staff, learners and friends of the school to join us,” said principal Trevor Roman. The other events planned are a 30th Anniversary Ball on September 28; a prizegiving event dedicated to the memory of learners who passed on throughout the 30 years, on October 12; and a Family Fun day on February 23, 2013. ‘Evita’ takes to stage THE Port Elizabeth Gilbert and Sullivan Society’s much-anticipated production of Evita opens tonight at the Savoy Theatre. To give people a foretaste, the cast recently transformed Havelock Square in Central into a movie-set complete with Eva Perón, played by Chireen Ferreira, and her husband Juan Perón, played by Paul Leonard, being driven in a veteran car, accompanied by a drill squad and a crowd of Peron supporters known as “decamisados”. Chireen Ferreira, who was born and educated in PE, has spent 8 years touring South Africa and the world, playing, amongst others, the role of Rumpelteaser in Andrew Lloyd Web-
ber’s International Touring Company of Cats. Paul Leonard, who is just as wellknown for his prowess as financial advisor as for his acting skills, was last seen in a major role as Sky Masterson in Guys & Dolls in 2008. Also in the cast are Ace Magxaki as Che. Magxaki wowed audiences last year as Curly in the production of Oklahoma! and also won the Showtime Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his portrayal of the Beast in Beauty and the Beast. Neville Staples also makes a return to the G&S stage to play Magaldi, while the role of Perón’s Mistress, who sings the hauntingly beautiful “Another Suitcase, Another Hall” will be shared by talented newcom-
ers Bianca Bosch and Micayla Fillis. The ensemble is made up of a diverse group of performers from 15 to 60-something, many with a long stage resumé and others making their G&S and stage debuts. The production is directed by multi-award winner Robin Williams and Candice Johnstone is the choreographer. Richard Campbell is the musical director. Evita runs until Saturday, June 2 with nightly performances at 7.30pm from Tuesday to Saturday and a matinee at 2pm on May 26. Centrestage pays tribute to Led Zeppelin and ACDC LED Zeppelin and ACDC will come under the spotlight next week as Centrestage embarks on a minitour to pay tribute to the juggernauts of the rock genre, with performances scheduled at Old Grey in PE on May 16 and May 17, Buccaneers in East London on May 18 and Potter’s Place in Jeffreys Bay on May 19.

“Big Boys Don’t Dance” for Signs and Wonders THE Signs and Wonders Mission is bringing the hilarious show “ Big Boys Don’t Dance” to the Boardwalk for one night only to raise funds for a recreation hall in the Northern Areas. The show will be staged on May 31 in conjunction with Dr Viljoen Primary School’s drama group who won gold at the Logan Festival in Fraserburg. “Big Boys Don’t Dance” is a unique theatrical experience for young and old. These two real Pretoria brothers, Ash and Brad, set the stage alight, using witty physical comedy, phenomenal dance talent and ingenious scripting. The show is set at Ash’s bachelor party where the brothers get into their fair share of trouble, and the focus of the story is how they get out of it. From one ridiculous idea to another, the boys prove that - through thick and thin - true brothers have each other’s backs. What really makes this show exceptional, are the high energy dance routines. Orchid society holds annual show THE Eastern Province Orchid Society is holding its annual display at the Sherwood Garden Centre in Walker Drive from this Friday until Sunday. ATM Machines The ATM machine was easily accessible in the shopping centre and I was able to reach all the keys, except that anyone standing in the queue behind me would be able to see me pinning in my code and take my money – this made me feel vulnerable.
Supermarkets The shopping basket had to be kept on my lap as I could not manoeuvre a trolley as well as push the wheelchair. The isles were wide enough for easy passage, but many items on the shelves and fridges were too high for me to reach. Upon reaching the check-out counter we could barely fit the wheelchair through the opening. Staff were, however, very helpful.

SAPS Walmer We visited the charge office at Walmer SAPS. There was no signage in the front of the charge office marked as disabled. On the wall leading to the SAPS parking area behind the building was a small wheelchair sign. After asking a staff member, we were told to park anywhere in the back. A suitable wheelchair ramp provided easy access to the charge office and I could see over the counter. The staff were friendly and helpful.
Some thoughts from Mandla: The entire experience was an eye- opener. As able-bodied persons, we take things for granted until faced with the unlikely incident. It is little things, like making sure that the ablution facilities have ample space. The ATM is also an example – it is not ideal having to draw money like that with a queue of people behind you.

John-Lee Augustyn, one of South Africa’s foremost cycling experts, has returned home to share the benefit of his extensive international experience with the Port Elizabeth cycling fraternity while he recovers from a lingering hip injury. The 25-year-old is one of only two South African cyclists to have participated in all three European grand tours – the Tour of Spain, Tour de France and Giro d’Italia. The other is Robert Hunter, whom he helped to win the national road championships earlier this year. The former Barloworld and Team Sky rider is now looking forward to new challenges as he takes up a coaching and managerial position with the Mecer-NMMU club, as well as starting a new family business venture. “Obviously it’s been a big disappointment and a difficult decision to stop because I’m still very young in a pro career. But this is a whole new and exciting chapter.” In addition to managing the universitybased club, he will also be opening a boutiquestyle cycle shop in August with his brother Wesley, who is well known in downhill racing circles. “Augustyn Brothers is not going to be just another bike shop.” The ex-U/23 national road champion, who, with fashion designer wife Greta Tonoli, was until recently based in Italy with Team Utensilnord-Named, said the shop would draw strongly on European influences. He said his team management had been very supportive following his ongoing health problems and had encouraged him to take a break in order to recover fully. “The manager said I should not injure myself further as I still have a future to think about. They have an open-door policy and I can go back when I’m ready.” In 2007, Augustyn broke the neck of his left femur during a crash in the Tour of Portugal. Two years later, the pins that had been inserted had to be removed as the bone had grown over them, resulting in inflammation of the surrounding muscles. The procedure, however, cut off the blood supply to that area, resulting in osteonecrosis, which caused the bone to start crumbling. “I had symptoms like numbness or ‘dead leg’, aggravated by hard training and long tours.” Initially dismissed as purely mental, the problem was later identified by Dr Jeroen Swart in Cape Town, which led to an innovative hip resurfacing surgery in March last year. Although it has given him full mobility of the joint, Augustyn said he battled to recover fast enough for his new Italian team during the highly competitive stage races. “I struggled with elevated chrome and cobalt levels in my body due to the toxins from my prosthetic hip.” While taking a break from the bike, he maintains his fitness levels with walking, swimming and gym. Despite being unable to ride at the moment, he said he relished the prospect of sharing his nutritional and technical knowledge with local cycling enthusiasts. Augustyn’s first assignment will be to guide Mecer-NMMU through the University Sport South Africa Cycling Championships in Wellington from July 2 to 6.

PROUD alumni of the Westville Senior Secondary School are rallying behind the school and attempting to not let the premises deteriorate any further. Learners from the matric class of 1992 came together with an initiative to raise funds to upkeep and refurbish their former school. “As we were progressing in discussions, it was decided to include the classes of 1991 as well. The sentiment from all of us attending this meeting was to give back to our school before we proceed with the 20-year reunion. It is a ‘pay it forward’ initiative,” said Bridgette Williams, one of the alumni committee members. “It is evident by the appearance of the school that they definitely need some kind of intervention and we, the classes of 1991 and 1992, would feel honoured to take this forward. We decided that we will make it our mission to uplift our school.” Two of the main concerns the alumni have are the outer fence, which is non-existent, and the temporary classrooms which have been

badly vandalised. A long-term goal is to re-develop the school’s hall, which is currently a make-shift hall consisting of two classrooms. The aim is to erect a multi-purpose facility which would be available to hire to the community to generate ongoing funding. Another goal on the long-term list is to install the school’s very own swimming pool. The first fundraising event that the alumni are having, is a 5km fun run on May 26. The route, which starts and finishes at the school, will be safely set out through the suburb of Sanctor. The fun run starts at 8.30am and the categories are as follows: primary school, secondary school and adults. The entry fees are R10 for scholars and R15 for adults. Entry forms are available at the Westville and surrounding schools. All former Westville learners are invited to partake in this initiatve and the other schools and community are urged to support the school. The mobile car wash – originally designed and developed by car dealerships with service centres – saves up to 200 litres of water and uses only bio-degradable chemicals. A light mist of water-soluble wax, designed to lift the dirt from the vehicle, is sprayed onto the vehicle. The wax with the encapsulated dirt is then removed with micro-fibre cloths. The wax residue that remains on the vehicle is buffed off with a secondary micro-fibre cloth that provides a superior shine. The green machine also features a specialised bug remover, rim, tyre and window cleaner. The only water used for this type of car wash, is to rinse the cloth. The waterless system is so clean and tidy that it can wash cars on showroom floors, without spilling a drop. Green Extreme is the only agent for the Green Machine waterless car wash unit in the
Eastern Cape. “We can assist anyone who wants to start his or her own business. Except for a vehicle, some dedication and a good attitude towards customer service, all you need is a Green Machine and a generator,” said Green Extreme co-owners, Jacques Coetzee and Hector du Preez. Green Extreme supply the car-wash equipment on a rental contract with monthly chemicals and accessories as per contract size. Full training and technical support for the equipment are also available. “Our waterless system is much cheaper to initiate, gives a much better wash for the same price, and is much quicker.” The three mobile washes they offer are: a bronze wash (an all-exterior wash, tyre and rim treatment) for R70; a silver wash (a bronze wash with an interior vacuum and plastic trim treatment) for R100; and the gold wash (a silver wash including a hand polish) for R200. Majestic Maldonado lifts Williams TALKING F1

IN 1983 Swatch introduce their first watches, Microsoft Word makes its debut and five different drivers win the first five races of the Formula 1 season. Coincidentally, the fifth driver to win in the 1983 season was Keke Rosberg for Williams. It wasn’t too long ago that the future of the Williams team looked dire and where the next points were going to come from was as big a mystery to them as to everyone else. But what a difference a year can make! Not since the final race of the 2004 season had Williams tasted victory and after a torrid 2011 it seemed unlikely they would ever again but, as the saying goes “form is temporary; class is permanent.” They toiled away in the Grove-based factory under the leadership of Sir Frank Williams and in 2012 delivered an exciting car with great raw pace. Venezuelan Pastor Maldonado had only started 23 F1 races before yesterday’s Spanish GP but no amount of inexperience was ever going to
hamper what would turn out to be one of the most popular wins in the F1 paddock for some time. Maldonado, having inherited pole from the penalised Hamilton, didn’t quite lead into the first corner; but he kept his cool and bided his time. It was local hero, Fernando Alonso, who swept into the lead just as he had done twelve months earlier in front of his passionate supporters. Alonso controlled the race from the front; but no matter what the Spaniard did, it was matched by Maldonado. Before long the Williams driver seized the lead of the race and controlled it with all the guise and skill of a multiple Grand Prix winner. Seemingly under no pressure at all, Maldonado reached the chequered flag at the end of the 66 laps to become the fifth different winner this season. Ferrari’s determined push has paid off with an improvement in pace; both their one-lap qualifying pace and race pace are progressing in the right direction and with Fernando Alonso they are able to exploit it to the maximum. The expectation was for a strong performance from the Lotus team. Coupled with their starting positions it seemed their best chance yet to take their first victory. However, a lack of pace in the opening stage of the race and sub-standard work in the pitlane meant that Kimi Raikkonen was left twenty seconds adrift after the final round of pitstops. Raikkonen managed to reduce the gap to second-placed man, Alonso, to a mere seven-tenths of a second by the final lap of the race; but the

challenge came too late from the Finnish driver. Third was still a good haul of points for Raikkonen and Lotus; but the feeling is that the decision- making on the pitwall has to be significantly sharper if they want to be operating at the sharp-end more often. What’s more, Lotus has done little to improve their pitstops since the Chinese GP and are currently giving away close to two seconds to their rivals. Raikkonen was followed home by teammate, Romain Grosjean, in fourth place. Kamui Kobayashi lived up to his fearless reputation as he dived past several cars to earn himself an impressive fifth-place finish. Elsewhere the so-called championship contenders had a relatively quiet day at the office. Reigning champion, Vettel, fought his way through the field after incurring a drive-through penalty for failing to reduce his speed under yellow flags; nevertheless the German fought his way back to finish sixth ultimately. Nico Rosberg managed seventh place while teammate, Schumacher, ran into the back of Bruno Senna going into turn one and earned himself a five-place grid penalty for the Monaco GP. Lewis Hamilton managed to stage a comeback from his qualifying penalty and wrapped up eighth ahead of teammate, Button, and Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg. There are some who believe there is no place for fairytales in Formula 1; but not even they would begrudge Williams, one of the historically great F1 teams, this wonderful victory and this most fitting 70th birthday present to Sir Frank.

MICHAEL ZOETMULDER THE annual KentonXtreme festival, which is being held this weekend, offers something for the whole family to ensure a fantastic weekend’s outing to Kentonon-Sea. Proceeds from the 2012 KentonXtreme Festival will be going towards the Chipembere Rhino Foundation. As is tradition, the sports events of the festival kick off with the Sunshine Coast SPAR off-road Triathlon on Saturday (May 19), which consists of a 750m tidal assisted swim, a 20km MTB cycle and a 4km Beach Run. Saturday’s activities also include the Pam
Golding Kenton Beach Soccer Tournament on the MTN inflatable pitch, an NSRI Extreme Display, a Vintage Car display and rugby on the big screen at Homewoods. Sunday morning means an early start for the Mountain Bike enthusiasts with the Mega Build-it 50km and 20km races, the High Tec Security Coastal 10km Beach Run/ walk and the Sunshine Coast Spar 5-a-side Beach Touch Rugby match. A new inclusion this year is the GreenFoundation’s Resorts Tug-of-War competition and for the kids there’s an ultra-exciting Outdoor Focus Kids’ Survivor Beach Challenge. When 5 into 4 won’t go THIS SPORTING LIFE BY MICHAEL SHAFTO
HERE’S the think piece promised last week.“Rumours are Flying”, the title of a long-ago hit song by the Andrews Sisters, dealt with love. Rumours flying in rugby circles lately, however, have had much the opposite effect, stirring discontent and a healthy dose of disbelief. They deal, these rumours, with what the outcome is likely to be concerning SARU’s promise to the Southern Kings of promotion to Super Rugby next season. In accordance with the promotion, the Kings will join four of the five SA franchises that currently contest the Four Nations (including Argentine for the first time) championship next season. Generally, it’s believed the SARU plan will call for the bottom side in the SA conference (likely at this stage to be the Lions) to drop out to make room for the Kings. The EP-based franchise is not the strongest of the second tier Vodacom Cup unions, but the promise seems to be based on SARU’s determination that, as the country’s richest source of black/coloured rugby talent, the Kings must be afforded every opportunity to give such players the chance to blossom. The sentiment is laudable, but it cuts right across all criteria of fairness. Correctly, the only way to manage such a problem is through the system of promotion and relegation. For the very obvious reason that the Kings simply aren’t the strongest union in
the Vodacom Cup, promotion and relegation don’t help SARU in its attempt – laudable though it may be – to help players of colour to be the best they can be. The rumours flying about in this debate concern the different beliefs of the interested parties of how SARU will go about solving this problem. Some critics believe it is not cut and dried – not yet anyway – that the bottom Super Rugby team in this season’s competition will automatically make way for the Kings. They point to history, believing that SARU, in this affair, is virtually the master of its own destiny. They point to amalgamations of the past: such as Natal, Border and EP becoming the Coastal Sharks; the Cats being an amalgamation of Free State, Lions and Griffons; Northern Bulls consisting of players from the Bulls and Falcons; and the Western Stormers being made up of personnel from WP, SWD Eagles and Boland. Something similar could be in the mind again. It is understood that Lions coach, John Mitchell – after all his job could be on the line – privately favours a system similar to that of the Cats of old. He advocates a plan requiring the Lions to give their best players to the Bloemfontein-based Cheetahs franchise and the Lions to continue as an independent union in the second-tier Vodacom Cup competition. Here is still another workable solution. It is, after all, SARU’s baby. So why does it not buy up all outstanding players of colour not contracted to a major union, particularly those from the Eastern Cape, and make them available on a compulsory basis to the five existing SA franchises: Stormers, Cheetahs, Sharks, Lions and Bulls. In this manner the present five franchises would continue to exist. There has been talk, too, of the five franchises standing together in a show of strength against SARU’s intention of dropping the bottom side of the conference at the end of the season. But that seems most unlikely. Dragging its heels in this matter is doing SARU infinite harm in the eyes of its other Southern Hemisphere partners. Let’s get on with it – the sooner, the better.

Gear up for annual Sunridge Village Family Run MONIQUE BASSON THE Sunridge Village Family Run/Walk, organised by the PE Amateur Athletics Club (PEAAC) and the Sunridge Village Shopping Centre, will be held this Saturday from 7am. The event consists of a 10km and 5km race, and isthebiggest10km non-leagueevent in PE. Only the Clover Race and Spar Women’s Challenge – which are both league events – attract more competitors. The 5km fun race will have prizes for the First Family Home, Parent and Pram, Dad and Dog, Mom and Tot and School with the most entries.
Those participants who would like to bring their best four-legged friend along, should not forget the leash. There will even be a water hole for the pets competing at the first water point for runners or walkers. Last year’s event drew over 2 000 competitors and it is hoped that this year will top that amount with at least 500 more entrants. “Ouraimthisyearisarecordbreaking2 500competitors. It can be done, and it will make this one of the biggest 10km events in the Metro,” said Shane Brown, chairman of the organising committee. Apart from hampers, lucky-draws and a R2 500 shopping experience from Sundridge SuperSpar up for grabs, the school with the most bulk entries
