HE 8th annual Spec-savers Ironman triathlon kicks off this week with an estimated 6000 athletes expected to converge in Port Elizabeth to take part in the three-day event from April 20 to April 22. The main event, the Spec-Savers Ironman, takes place on Sunday, with the Iron Girl South Africa Fun Run on Friday, and the Vodacom Corporate Triathlon Challenge, powered by Algoa FM, and the Pritt IronKids on Saturday April 21. There has been significant growth in the event since its humble beginnings with only 420 athletes back in 2004, to the 1772 registered athletes from 48 countries for the triathlon. World Endurance South Africa Managing Director, Keith Bowler, earlier said that the competition is a major boost to the economy. “The Spec-Savers Ironman South Africa brings a financial injection in terms of direct tourism spend estimated at around R50 million.” The host of athletes and tourists descending on the Bay has resulted on a high occupancy at beachfront accommodation and surrounding areas due to the proximity of the event venue, according to Titus Chuene, Marketing Manager at Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism. He added, however, that (on Monday) there was still some space available. As can be expected, most of the atletes arriving will come with specific dietary requirements to prepare for the gruelling race, and many of the hotels cater for this with special meals on offer. “Most of the athletes, especially the pro-athletes, stick to what they know and will prepare their own meals or only eat certain food items on the hotel menus, especially the night before the race,” said Michael Flanagan, co-ordinator, Media & PR of the World Triathlon Corporation. Former Bay resident and SpecSavers Ironman South Africa defend-

ing champion Raynard Tissink will also take part in this year’s race. Tissink, who has participated in seven Ironman races in PE and won the competition three times, has relocated to Cape Town recently. Other local celebrities to look out for include Mr South Africa 2010 and former Die Burger Mr PE, Denver Burns, and former Springbok rugby player, Garth Wright. According to Police Spokesperson Capt. Sandra Janse van Rensburg, the Police are investigating numerous cases of housebreaking in Elysee Gardens since January. They are expecting more arrests to follow. The suspect arrested is from Sherwood and is in police custody. He was expected to appear in court yesterday, but at time of going to print no details of his court appearance were available. According to a concerned resident who contacted the PE Express and wishes to remain anonymous, it is suspected that residents inside the complex were responsible for the break-ins or giving information about residents’ movements to the burglars. She felt so unsafe that she has had to upgrade her house’s security, costing her about R3 000. “At least I own the house and it adds value to my property. But what about the people who rent and the home-owner refuses to upgrade the security?” she asked. Both the chairman of the board of trustees of the complex as well as the managing agent, refused to comment. According to the resident, the complex, which has about 150 houses, has experienced about 30 break-ins or attempted break-ins since December last year. According to a newsletter sent to residents last week, there were over the Easter weekend alone 3 breakins of houses unoccupied and one attempted break-in where the owner was asleep in the house. In one case a fire arm was stolen. A gate remote for the complex, as well as a back pack with tools which could be used in

RESIDENTS of the Elysee Gardens Complex in Kabega Park hope that their 3month nightmare of break-ins has come to an end after the arrest of a man (20) last week Wednesday.

According to Andrew Mann of NSA, they have been working closely with the Board of Trustees of the complex to address the situation. Mann said their suspicions that help was given from inside the complex were confirmed when they held an undercover operation one night during Easter weekend with 8 members surrounding the complex and checking who entered and left. Residents were not informed so as not to alert suspects. During that night there was an attempted break-in in the complex confirming our suspicions,” said Mann. According to Mann, the most important message to get across is that one should not have a false sense of security when one lives in a townhouse complex. “People drive in the gates in a hurry and do not check who enters behind them. The burglars’ accomplices who live inside the complex, tell them who is away and they even have the audacity to park in their victim’s parking lots, with neighbours thinking it’s just visitors,” said Mann. “Even just having an alarm is not enough. One should have a panic button and armed response. Many people hear alarms going off, but they don’t act on it,” said Mann. “Another big concern is that thieves would rather break in when you are at home, when your alarm is not activated. They know if they break in during the day when the alarm is on they do not have enough time to ransack the house before the armed response arrives. Even if you are inside your house, your alarm should be activated,” said Mann. Another modus operandi that Mann has heard about is thieves entering the house during the day and then hiding their loot in the roof. At night the goods are then removed under cover of darkness.

BAY music artist, Faye Gatley, will premiere her music video for the South African love song “Ndithanda wena” (I like you) on April 25 at PE hotspot The Music Kitchen. “Ndithanda wena” is the third single from the album The Way I Play by pop-rock singer/songwriter, Faye Gatley. It is an original South African love song containing the three languages which she grew up with, namely English, Afrikaans and Xhosa. Shot in the picturesque Eastern Cape town of Steytlerville, the music video was directed and filmed by Roelof Bezuidenhout and produced by Chris Fourie. Showing off the untouched beauty of the Karoo, Faye Gatley wanted her first music video to be an introduction of herself as a South African artist both nationally and internationally.

Faye Gatley’s original song “I Don’t Wanna Fight” (featuring Bryan Mclagan) has proved to be very popular on Eastern Cape radio stations and is making an impact outside of the province by climbing the Top 40 chart on Stellenbosch radio station MFM. Later this year, Xbox 360 gamers can look forward to playing along to her original song “Don’t”, which will be featured on an X-box 360 game entitled A-Band. Wheels all set for start of EXPRESS REPORTER AFTER a very successful media launch on March 7 which featured world class cricketer Makhaya Ntini as the guest of honour, the ABay Wheelchair Wednesday wheels are turning furiously for its start on Wednesday, May 2. The power of wheels is often underappreciated. On a daily basis people rely on wheels – two or four – for all kinds of mobility needs, but mostly for getting from A to B. But just imagine what it is like spending every day reliant on a tool, like a wheelchair, that is completely central to one’s existence and the space and place challenges that come with it. This exercise of imagination is the motive behind the Association for Persons with Physical Disabilities’ (APD’s) pioneering new fundraising and awareness initiative, dubbed ABay Wheelchair Wednesday. “APD wanted to keep the idea simple but effective,” said Brian Bezuidenhout, APD Executive Director. “So we thought, what better way to raise awareness, funds and turn the tables on traditional thinking about people with physical disabilities than to give able-bodied people some insight and perspective into our everyday lives. “How do we do this? The answer is simple. May 2012 will see company heads, chief executives, and city leaders in general contribute R5 000 and pledge to spend four hours in a wheelchair on one of the 5 Wednesdays in May. This practical experience will assist our leadership from the public and private sectors in gaining a deeper insight into the obstacles of persons with mobility challenges, as well as providing opportunities for practi-

cal change,” said Bezuidenhout. With over 75 000 people with disabilities living in Nelson Mandela Bay, this is a well-needed perspective, added Bezuidenhout. The APD aims to get 50 local highflyers to come on board – ten each week. These business and public sector participants each donate R5 000 to take part in ABay Wheelchair Wednesday. These donations will ultimately translate into 50 wheelchairs which will go to needy children with disabilities. Any remaining funds will go to APD’s Day Care Centre in Motherwell where they care for 29 children with various disabilities between the ages of 1 and 7 years. “One of the major factors that prohibit persons with disabilities from integrating and functioning normally within society is the issue of reasonable accommodation,” Bezuidenhout explained. “The ABay Wheelchair Wednesday initiative will challenge the mindset of the decision-makers within society and help to bring about an unprecedented paradigm shift in the way persons with disabilities are treated.” The first organisation to pledge its

support was Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism, with CEO, Mandlakazi Skefile dedicating herself to performing her duties in a wheelchair each Wednesday in May. Other leaders who have followed the NMBT CEO’s example are from ABay Stationers, ACSA, The Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment Complex, Die Burger, Bay FM, DisChem Pharmacies and Spar – to name but a few. Willie Bosch, Project Coordinator, advises that there are still participant chairs available and encourages local businesses to enter. The Grand Send-Off, which will see some very prominent Nelson Mandela Bay personalities in wheelchairs, will take place on May 2 at 10am from the APD Nelson Mandela Bay offices at 55 Paterson Road. This is according to Andrea Wessels of Zeranza.299, organiser of the festival. She said they had secured big names in the industry, including those of Ne-yo, Shaggy, Ludacris and new international Reggae sensations, Protojy and Indiggna-

tion from Jamaica. “All contracts have been signed and arrangements are in place with these international bands, as well as with a line-up of local performers,” said Wessels. According to her, as organisers, they are extremely excited to be hosting an event of this magnitude in Port Elizabeth. Family complicates living arrangement VERBAL agreements between family members often create problematic situations with regard to living arrangements. A reader writes that, a few years ago, her son and his wife suggested that their double garage be converted into a flatlet for her and her partner. Part of this arrangement included that a new double garage be constructed on the property. The financing for these alterations was provided by the reader who raised a bond on another erf she owns. She also agreed to pay the monthly electricity charges in respect of the whole property, not only the flat, while her son and daughter-in-law would take care of the rates and garden services. Unfortunately, four years later, the reader’s son and his wife got divorced. He moved out and his ex-wife remains on the property with his mother. Our reader’s concerns relate to

whether her son’s ex-wife can evict her from the property without refunding her for the improvements made at her own expense. Her former daughter-in-law refuses to reduce the agreement between them to writing and the reader is concerned what the effect will be on her rights, particularly when she reaches retirement age. “There are two aspects that need to be considered,” says Rian du Toit from DTS Attorneys in Port Elizabeth. “Firstly, the right to live on the said property and, secondly, the improvements on someone else’s property paid for by the reader.” In the absence of the right to live on the property being registered against the title deed, which it does not appear was the case here, it simply remains a personal right, says Du Toit. Should the owner of the property commence with eviction proceedings, Du Toit says the terms of the agree-

EASTERN CAPE 4X4 CHALLENGE THIS WEEKEND The Eastern Cape 4x4 Challenge Club will be hosting their first event for the year on April 21 at PE Oval Track Raceway on the Mission Road in Greenbushes. There will be six different classes of vehicles com peting, ranging from Super Modified to Standard Production 4x4 pickups. Mem bers of the public are welcome to enter their 4x4 vehicles in the Standard Produc tion class, but a crash helmet is mandato ry. The event will start at 9am with regis tration commencing at 7.30am. Refresh ments will be on sale throughout the day. THERE is an unnameable ingredient, an x-factor, about the Shanghai International circuit that delivers the most mind-bending, exhilarating racing that displays Formula 1 at its very best. Nico Rosberg was the architect of his own success at the Chinese GP. He laid the foundation with a near-perfect qualifying lap on Saturday, which put him half a second clear of the chasing pack. A high level of tyre wear put pains to his campaign for solid points in both Australia and Malaysia but a three-week gap seemingly afforded the team with enough time to make a crucial step forward. In addition, the low-track temperature, hovering in the mid-twenties, aided the Mercedes team in what would be their first race victory since the 1955 Italian GP. Behind the Mercedes driver though, it was a completely different story as the Chinese GP sparked into life with no fever than eight drivers vying for the remaining two podium slots. Pit crews relentlessly practise pit stops and almost always get the practice down to a perfect symmetrical dance. Nevertheless, mistakes tend to creep in from time to time. Michael Schumacher paid the ultimate price as he was forced into retirement after his left front tyre wasn’t properly fastened during his first stop. Less disastrous, but still costly, Jenson Button lost six seconds during one of his stops as the right-rear wheelgun appeared to fail. JB exited the pitlane amongst a bevy of traffic and without a shot of winning the race. Given Rosberg’s electric pace it would likely have been impossible for the Brit to overhaul the Mercedes. train of cars in second position but as the laps counted down, so too the Finn’s chances of a good result diminished. A two-stop race strategy meant that Raikkonen was running on severely worn tyres by the closing stages of the race and was ultimately a sitting duck as he was mugged of second and shuffled down the field to 14th. All teams and drivers have by now come to learn the Pirelli tyres cannot be cajoled around a circuit once the life has been taken out of them. If the team opted to change to a two-stop race strategy it begs the question as to why they didn’t run longer in the initial stints of the race. In not doing so, they asked the Lotus to do 28 laps on the medium compound tyre – a distance no driver has been able to eke out of the Pirelli rubber. This strategy call is a hard one to figure out. Could it be that the Lotus brains trust are unable to make sound calls because they’re not used to running at the sharpend? Besides the botched strategy call, Lotus must now have a serious look into the time it takes to turn their cars around in the pitbox. Raikkonen’s two stops took a total 42.9 seconds whereas Fernando Alonso spent only 40.4 seconds in the pitlane during his two trips. That’s a loss of 2.5 seconds and completely unacceptable at this level. Second place was Jenson Button’s reward while teammate Hamilton again racked up solid points in third. Red Bull’s Mark Webber completed a hat-trick of fourth place finishes ahead of teammate Sebastian Vettel. The double champion, who could manage a paltry 11th in qualifying, ran a similar strategy to Raikkonen and appeared happy to have salvaged fifth place on the threadbare Pirelli’s. Romain Grosjean finished his first race of the year in sixth ahead of Williams’s duo Senna and Maldonado. Fernando Alonso started and finished in 9th place as Sauber’s Kobayashi snapped up the final point in 10th. The race victory was always firmly in the grip of Nico Rosberg. The German, starting his 111th grand prix, easily controlled the race and was always effortlessly on course towards his first F1 victory. Known as somewhat of a Shanghai specialist, Nico Rosberg has finally stepped out of the shadows and emphatically announced himself with an emphatic, classy victory on the F1 stage. Welcome Nico!

Woody Cape mountain bike and trail challenge One of the more diverse and exciting mountain bike (MTB) and trail runs will be taking

place on Saturday, May 5, within the Alexandria Forest region. The event comprises both short and long courses for mountain bike and trail run enthusiasts, with all taking place at the same time and starting at the breathtaking Elephants of Eden. Situated in the heart of the forest belt, this little gem is unknown to most and is a sanctuary to over half-a-dozen African elephants. The farm, which is owned by Ian and Lisette Withers of the Knysna Elephant Park, will play host to a 55km MTB race, 18km MTB race, 18km trail run and a 5km fun trail run. Participants in each of the four events will set off from 9am to the upper reaches of the farm with its breathtaking views of Bird Island and the largest dune fields south of the equator before heading into the neighbouring Kaba Game farm which is home to the International Quest Africa leadership school and houses many game animals, including giraffe and buffalo. From Kaba it’s down into the forest which is part of the Addo Elephant National Park, the third largest national park in the country, where the Woody Cape region consists of pristine indigenous forest. The 55km cycle won’t be for the fainthearted whilst the 18km version is considered a little easier for the less experienced riders, but still expect a breathtaking ride in all senses of the word. This experience is definitely not something to miss this year and organisers are warning that no late entries will be accepted after online entries close on Thursday, May 3. Proceeds from the event will be going towards the local Alexandria NG Kerk, who will also be hosting their annual fete in Alexandria on the morning. WILLIAMS HUNT UITENHAGE All smiles at the KFC Ironman 4 the Kidz Launch THE KFC Ironman 4 the Kidz launch recently also served to welcome the adventurous French triathlete, Nicolas Gracco de Lay, to Port Elizabeth. Founded by former Springbok scrumhalf, Garth Wright, and business partner, Gary Stephenson, the Ironman 4 the Kidz charity has set a target of R1.5 million for 2012, benefiting 11 children-based charities in the Eastern Cape region. The pair are themselves participating in the Spec-Savers Ironman South Africa and will be sporting the orange Ironman 4 the Kidz race tops along with 67 charity athletes. Gracco de Lay has been through an incredible journey to get to South Africa and race at next week’s Spec-Savers Ironman South Africa by travelling through Africa by car from his home town in the South of France. While on his African adventure, the Frenchman has put his weight behind the

KFC Ironman 4 the Kidz and is collecting items for auction, the proceeds of which will all be donated to the charity. Garth Wright highlighted that 2012 has been a challenging year but that Gracco de Lay’s mission refreshed what the Charity Trust stands for. “Nicolas’s mission is to promote Ironman and raise funds for the Ironman 4 the Kidz Charity Trust, but he had the selflessness to think of people in need,” said Wright. Wright also thanked everyone for their contributions highlighting title sponsor, KFC who put in R511 000, Software AG with R200 000 and thanked First National Bank for their support over the years. “The money raised is terrific, but our message is what is most important. If we open the mind of a child to a better possibility then we’ve done our work,” said Wright. “Going from R11 000 in the first year to setting a target of

R1.5 million to include 11 beneficiaries shows just how much the charity has grown but as the money has grown, so has the responsibility.” This was highlighted by Stephenson saying the charity has tried to get more involved with more visible projects, such as repairing of the roof and establishment of the recreation centre at the EP Child and Youth Care Centre, the fencing of the new Khayalethu Youth Centre and the purchase and registration of a property for “We Care” in Gelvandale that will offer counselling, shelter and support for abused children in the community. “We want to hopefully leave a legacy,” said Stephenson. “We chose Ironman because it is the ultimate sporting challenge. Those who compete have certain characteristics that set them apart – these being: dedication, discipline and desire. If you have these characteristics then anything is possible,” said Wright.

NAF Golf day tees off on April 26 THE annual fundraising Golf Day to benefit the Northern Arts Festival 2012 will take place at the Humewood Links Golf Club on April 26. The fourth Northern Arts Charity Golf Day is supported by various individuals and businesses in Nelson Mandela Bay, who assist in raising funding for the popular arts festival held in September. Launched in 2007, this arts festi-

val has since grown to one of the key events in the Eastern Cape, and it needs an ongoing financial injection to secure its existence. The Northern Arts Festival’s primary goal is that of discovering and rediscovering talent and promoting the arts, heritage, culture and creating a platform for budding young artists. “The golf day is open to all golfers with an official handicap in an 18-hole Individual Stableford

competition, with the first tee off time at 10:46am. Players will be provided with many surprises, in addition to the giveaways that will be sponsored by various businesses in the Metro,” said festival director Billy Paulson. The magnificent 76cm handcarved wooden Monty Uren floating trophy sponsored by The Trophy Guy will be up for grabs, in addition to the prizes totaling over R35 000 in value.
