Media24 branches nationwide will be packing snack packs for child rape victims, and the Port Elizabeth branch of Media24 will be spoiling children from the SOS Children’s Villages, as well as two homes for the aged. TANYA VAN ZYL “IT is wonderful to see how a community starts to grow out of what used to be nothing!” Retief Odendaal, DA Councillor for Ward 6, finds it difficult to contain his excitement for the growing neighbourhood that is Fairview. This once-overgrown piece of land has become the new motor-mecca of Port Elizabeth and every so often a new house has been built on the Restitution grounds. And very soon this neighbourhood will also boast its very own sports centre. According to Clive Felix, director of the Port Elizabeth Land Restitution and Housing Association (PELRHA), they envisaged the development of a neighbourhood with social infrastructure and currently there are no sporting facilities within the Fairview or greater Fairview area. “An opportunity existed to leverage extra resources through creating business nodes. The funds generated from the sale of this business land can only be used for developmental purposes and for any shortfall in developing the sites to be transferred to successful claimants,” Felix said. With the sports centre only in the initial phases, clarity on what the ground on the corners of Frank Landman Street and Willow

Road will be used for, can only be finalised once PELRHA has had discussions with the sporting fraternity. Felix, however, said they plan for the centre to be a multi-sport facility. It is not sure when construction of the facility will commence, but PELRHA has cleared the site of bush and vegetation in the meantime. “This is mainly for safety and security reasons for those residents adjacent to the sportsfield,” Felix added. He believes that all the residents in Fairview and the greater Fairview area will benefit from the sports centre. In turn Odendaal said he is very excited about the development and he feels it is a “wonderful opportunity for the community.” “I have already had two clubs in Overbaakens that approached me about the possibility of building such facilities in their area. “Unfortunately the metro does not have the money to build such facilities and that is why this development is so welcome and I believe the residents of Overbaakens would appreciate a sports centre so close to their neighbourhood,” Odendaal explained. Funding for the project will partly come from PELRHA. “We are looking at the sporting codes to make a contribution too, probably via their national federations or the National Lottery Fund. PELRHA has not made any specific budget allocation at this stage,” Felix said.

Van Staden’s wind farm project gets green light METROWIND (Pty) Limited announced last Thursday that it has been given the final go-ahead to build and operate, a 27MW wind farm at Van Stadens in the Eastern Cape, which is expected to start supplying power to the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) in the next 13 months. MetroWind director, Ian Curry, told journalists at a media briefing in Port Elizabeth that the recent granting of a generation licence by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA), together with the Special Consent approval from the NMBM, paves the way for the construction of the ground-breaking R550 million renewable energy project, scheduled to begin during the third quarter of 2012. The generation licence permits MetroWind to generate electricity from its Van Staden’s facility, located to the west of ‘windy city’ Port Eliza-

beth, and to sell this power to Eskom – South Africa’s national power utility – for a period of 20 years. To be known as MetroWind Van Staden’s Wind Farm, this will be one of the first ‘energy-from-wind’ projects to be developed in South Africa. It will provide approximately 80 million kWh/year to the local electrical grid, and is an identified strategic economic development project in the region. The Special Consent approval – and sign-off by Mayor Zanoxolo Wayile – signifies a critical green light to proceed with the MetroWind project. MetroWind Director Donald McGillivray said, “We see our project as a vital step forward in South Africa’s pursuit of clean, renewable energy. While some concerns have been voiced about potential environmental impacts of our project, we believe these have been addressed and that most community members are fully supportive of the wind farm. The

project exemplifies the objectives of sustainable development where a broad spectrum of stakeholders, and the environment, benefit.” * Die Burger reported on Friday that Adv. Henk Botha, a resident of Blue Horizon Bay who represents 400 of out the 450 residents opposed to the windfarm, was asked to leave the conference as he was not invited. Botha told Die Burger after the conference that their appeal against the rezoning of the agricultural land to industrial (for the windfarm) was still pending in Bisho. In addition, Botha is considering taking the minister of environmental affairs’ approval of the project on review, to the high court. “The first we heard about the wind farm was in October last year when, during a meeting, we were told that everything had been approved. This while public participation processes are a prerequisite of these types of studies, of which we were excluded,” said Botha.

Sunday School excursion to Loerie Dam THE Booysen Park New Apostolic Sunday School teachers arranged an excursion for their children to Loerie Water Treatment Works recently. This is in line with their annual environmental theme for 2012: Saving water makes cents. Municipal guides, John De Kock and Willie Raymond Michaels diligently explained the purification of water. The children were surprised to learn the cost of purifying water.

Sunday School teacher, Charmelle LawrenceScharneck, encouraged the children to save water at “every turn”. “The educational outing was very exciting and educational. Fernwood Park Sunday School joined us for the day and we had Thontsi, the municipality’s water mascot, to reinforce the importance of water,” Lawrence-Scharneck said. After the tour the children played various games and were served lunch.

Boardwalk refurbishes Frail Care Home NCEBA DLADLA IN celebration of former President Nelson Mandela’s 94th birthday today and the 67 years of his life fighting for peace, equal rights and justice, the Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment World has refurbished the Gelvandale Park Frail Care Centre to the value of R200 000 on behalf of 115 elderly residents calling the place home. The casino supplied the range of kitchen equipment and painted the home which needed a new coat of paint. A group of thirty Boardwalk staff members, including General Manager Clifford Ngakane, CSI Manager Peggy Mokhatla and Public Relations and Communications Manager Caley Phillips rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty – for a good cause. The casino also donated gas stoves, two-litre industrial microwaves, a large stainless steel splash table, various industrial-sized casse-

role pots, colanders, basting spoons, kettles, eating bowls and tilting pans. “The centre was coping as best it could with a kitchen in desperate need of maintenance and equipment of which some was over 30 years old. It was an impossible situation for those running the home to supply the residents with their daily meals. Given that we are celebrating Nelson Mandela’s Birthday this month, we could think of no better way to honour him than by giving back to other underprivileged and vulnerable pensioners,” said Mokhatla proudly. The centre – which is currently being run by the community and is dependent on government subsidy, donations and sponsorship from the public – was founded in 1979. Many of its residents suffer from Alzheimer’s disease and plans are underway for the construction of a special enclosed area for the safekeeping of these residents. According to Phillips, the casino will also buy new beds for these residents in the not toodistant future.

Sonic sedan more sedate but still fun for the young and fun edge which will make it attractive for young families.

BETTIE GILIOMEE EFFECTIVE advertising is when a song becomes so synonomous with the product that when one hears it one automatically think of the product. The Sonic advertisement’s anthem “We Are Young” by Fun is a good example of this, emphasizing the fun of driving a Sonic even if you can’t do crazy things such as sky diving and bungee jumping with it. So when I heard that GM was giving me a Sonic Sedan to test drive I was quite curious how the 4-door would compare and how Chev will carry over the young and fun concepts to what is usually a much more sedate car. From the outside, the sedan is not quite as striking as the hatchback, but impressive nonetheless. In the looks department the Sonic is, however, stiff competition for other sedans in its segment. Interior and features The interior boasts features that are reminiscent both of the Chev Cruze and the Chev Spark. The boot is also very roomy and a 60/40 split ensures bigger cargo handling ability. Standard features include electric

windows in the front, power-steering, air-conditioner, anti-lock braking system with EBD, driver, passenger and front seat side-airbags, fog lamps, 15 inch alloy wheels and CD Frontloader.

Ride

taking the Sonic out on the Kragga Kamma Road to Seaview after a weekend of heavy rains, where one had to drive on the wrong side of the road most of the time - to avoid aquaplaning and potholes. The ride was smooth and uneventful despite the poor conditions.

En route to Hockenheim NATALIE LE CLUE AS the tenth race of the season approaches it brings with it the halfway mark of the 2012 season and a crucial point for, at least, one of the front running teams. The German Grand Prix has been a fixture on the Formula 1 calendar for decades but it was the unprecedented success of Michael Schumacher that elevated the sport to cult status in Germany. The Hockenheim circuit hasn’t featured on the calendar since 2010 as it alternates yearly with the Nurburgring. You would think that this absence would mean that the top teams turn up this weekend with equal op-

portunity for success. In reality, McLaren arrives as the front running team under most pressure to perform. Principal Martin Whitmarsh remains adamant that nothing is wrong with the car rather that they haven’t been hitting the sweet spot in terms of set-up. After a few difficult races this point of view is going to be hard sell to Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button. The belief of winning any title in 2012 is starting to waver in the McLaren camp and if that resolve is to be strengthened, it has to start this weekend. Kimi Raikkonen has never won the German Grand Prix and hasn’t exactly had a love affair with German tracks in his F1 career. Nevertheless, as Romain Grosjean takes a five-place grid penalty for a gearbox change this

weekend, the Finn will be Lotus’s best chance of threatening the podium. The weather in Germany and the layout of the Hockenheim circuit is set to play to the strengths of the E20. However, they don’t expect to have all the pieces simply fall into place. Lotus arrives in Germany with a specific plan of action. Several updates will be available for the car this weekend and although there is no word on what exactly the upgrades are, technical director James Allison has revealed that the updates are ‘interesting.’ There would be no reason for Allison to make a lot of noise if he didn’t feel confident about the team’s prospects this weekend. There will be an almighty fight for those twenty-five points, guaranteed. If there can be such a thing as form

in Formula 1, then Fernando Alonso is the man in best shape. His Ferrari is now a genuine bet for victory at every race and the way he is driving is more than worthy of the championship lead. They will all be fighting it out on a German circuit that varies quite a bit from what was seen two weeks ago at Silverstone. The layout includes just two high speed corners as the rest of the lap is comprised of medium speed corners. This requires stability under braking and conversely good traction out of the slower speed corners. The Drag Reduction System will be in use for the first time at Hockenheim this weekend. This ‘overtakingtool’ has been a bone of contention for many fans since its introduction.

Whether you love or hate the system there is a question as to why it has been necessary to implement it at all? It could be down to the fact that several of the modern circuits only lend themselves to overtaking via DRS. The huge complexes, designed by Herman Tilke, offer few if any other opportunities for overtaking. In contrast, the few legendary tracks left on the calendar, such as Monaco and Suzuka, create several overtaking opportunities through a layout which is conducive and demanding of driver skill. Whatever the opinion may be on DRS, it seems that it is here to stay. With or without it the German Grand Prix has potentially a big part to play in its guise as round ten of the 2012 Formula 1 world championship.

hardly contain a single weak link. Though the Reds are the current holders of the Super Rugby trophy, the Sharks – if the “right” team pitches up on the day – should have the easier ride. But as the Sharks have demonstrated so often, how they play on any given weekend seems to depend on which side Keegan Daniel’s men get out of bed on the morning of a match. They have been that sort of team this season. On their day they are capable of beating the very best. But when it’s not their day, anything can happen. Witness the mishmash they served up against the Lions at Ellis Park less than a month ago. Looking at the bigger picture, so far it has been a great season. Even “intense” is hardly an adequate word to describe it. And it’s soon to become more so, as the new southern hemisphere Four Nations season (now including Argentina) looms. Amid all the excitement have you perhaps missed one specially significant aspect of the Super Rugby season? Take a look again at the six teams left in the tournament. Have you noticed that no fewer than half the teams in that top six are South African? If Springbok coach, Heyneke Meyer, isn’t rubbing his hands in anticipation it would be surprising. Injuries, of course, present a problem – specially those to loose-forward marauder Heinrich Brussow and the unflappable Patrick Lambie now that steamroller Frans Steyn has been declared ineligible for the tournament. But these hiccups aside, critics who keep harping on the lack of flair about the probable Bok lineup should remember that test rugby is an entirely different kettle of fish to the game at any other level. They keep complaining about the Stormers having scored so few tries. But why are they top of the Super Rugby log? The answer is simple: they keep on winning, having lost only two of their 16 games. Remember, too, that consistency is the real secret of success in the international arena. So keep an open mind, the Boks could yet present their country with a proud surprise. As you read this today spare a thought for Mark Boucher, with best wishes for a full and speedy recovery from his eye injury. Let’s hope, too, that his Proteas teammates can make him proud in the first cricket test against England, starting at the Oval tomorrow.

Brazilian wins JBay Pro SA’s world famous Supertubes surf break lived up to its reputation this past week as 144 top local and international surfers took part in the new-look Billabong Pro JBay event. After four days of world class surfing, anger and determination saw Brazilian Adriano de Souza snatch the title from French surfer Joan Duru in a close final which saw De Souza having to replace his board after smashing into the infamously sharp rocks of Supertubes. The contest, which drew a massive national and international media contigent, started last Tuesday in near-perfect conditions with ideal six-to-eight-foot waves and concluded four days later before the worst of the weekend weather set in. De Souza, ranked in the top 10 in the world, was full of praise for the venue and vowed to be back next year to defend his title.

McGregor extends legendary status KZN’s Hank McGregor, well-recognised as the best paddler ever to grace South African waters, further extended his legendary status with his 9th Berg River Canoe Marathon title over the weekend. Tackling a top class field and atrocious weather conditions, McGregor made the event his own and was pretty chuffed to have achieved this landmark victory before his father, Lee McGregor senior, himself a legendary sportsman with national colours in various sporting codes, seconded his son during this marathon 4-day paddling event.

Urban Run boosted by expo September’s Nelson Mandela Bay Urban Run will be boosted by the presence of a lifestyle and fitness expo on the Donkin Reserve over the race weekend of September 15 and 16.

Exhibitors of fitness and lifestyle products will be displaying and selling their wares with over 1 000 participants expected for the second running of the Urban Run, a fun 10.5km obstacle running race through the heart of the CBD, which was established to highlight the urban renewal of Port Elizabeth undertaken by the Mandela Bay Development Agency. It being National Recycling Day on the 16th, a couple of interesting recycling and Go Green exhibitors have booked for the expo which will run between 9am and 5pm on the Saturday and 7am and 2pm on the Sunday. With just 1 200 entries being taken for 2012, entry slots are quickly running out for what

Gemmell, Swan win wet VW Rally THE wettest weather experienced on a round of the SA Rally Championship in years was not enough to prevent Castrol Team Toyota’s Johnny Gemmell and Carolyn Swan from scoring their first win together in the Volkswagen Rally in the Eastern Cape on Saturday. Round four of the championship, run over two days in the Uitenhage, PE, Longmore Forest and Gamtoos areas, coincided with heavy rain and freezing temperatures, turning the 180 kilometres of gravel special stages into a slippery, and in places water-logged, obstacle course that caught out many of the competitors. One stage on Friday and two on Saturday had to be cancelled because of the conditions. Gemmell and Swan led former champions, Jan Habig and Robert Paisley, (Ford Fiesta) by five seconds after Friday’s four stages, with Castrol Toyota team-mates, Leeroy Poulter and Elvene Coetzee, a close third, 13 seconds behind the Ford. On Saturday Gemmell won the opening stage six over a challenging 19 kilometres in the Longmore Forest and opened up the lead to some 27 seconds and, although Habig won the next three stages, Gemmell controlled the race from the front, leading on the road throughout the day and finally taking his second VW victory and Swan’s first in the premier class. In the process, the Toyota pair moved into the lead in the championship with four rounds remaining and now enjoy a threepoint lead over Mark Cronje and Robin Houghton (Ford Fiesta). Cronje and Houghton finished third, 1 min 32 seconds behind the winning Toyota after inheriting the final podium position from Poulter and Coetzee on stage nine.

Squad named for SA Schools rugby trials THE Blue Bulls had the majority of their squad called up for the SA Schools trials later this month, announced at the conclusion of the Coca-Cola Under-18 Craven Week in Port Elizabeth. The Eastern Province have three players selected for the trials. They are Selwyn Davids, Sergeal Petersen and Aidon Davis.
