HILE the Springboks arrived already on Sunday for their test match against England in the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday, the England team is only expected to arrive today. Test fever is running high in the metro, with a sold-out crowd expected for this third test in the series. On

Monday there were only about 2 000 tickets left for the match. These tickets were for prime seats in the East Stand (blocks 215 and 217) which cost R500. According to Titus Chuene, Marketing Manager at Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism, occupancy at accommodation establishments for the test match weekend is 99%. This includes accommodation offered from a very basic level up to high-end hotels. Due to a few cancellations there was on Monday still some accommodation available in

the metro and surrounds. The Springboks have already had practice sessions at Grey High School during the past two days. It is expected that the Springbok team for the test will be announced this afternoon at a media briefing at the Garden Court King’s Beach. The England team, which arrives this afternoon, will only make a team announcement tomorrow morning around 10am.

PE EXPRESS REPORTER LOCAL couple Patrick and Bev Scott, who raised R9 000 last year for the local branch of the Anti-animal Cruelty League by walking 230km from Stratford-upon-Avon to London along Shakespeare’s Way, will this year be taking on The Saxon Shore Way. They are hoping to raise R15 000 by walking 260km from Gravesend to Hastings, at their own expense. This will be used for a full spaya-

thon event aimed at sterilising as many animals as possible in impoverished communities. Patrick, who is an advocate and Bev, who is a music teacher at Theodor Herzl, can be sponsored per kilometre or a donation of any amount. The Scotts leave PE on Saturday (23 June) and the walk begins on 2 July. They will be posting daily updates on their Facebook group, Walking for Paws and Claws. Every cent raised on this trip will go directly into funding a spayathon of the Animal AntiCruelty League.

Tramways Building to get face lift PE EXPRESS REPORTER THE Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) is currently preparing designs for a facelift for one of Port Elizabeth’s oldest buildings, the historic Tramways building on Baaken’s Street. A multi–million rand investment has been set aside for the redevelopment of the building, which is over a 100 years old. Before the Tramways building was burnt down in an accidental fire in the late 90’s, the building was used as an ice rink. The MBDA, an entity of Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM), has appointed the Aurecon Group, Davis Langdon Quantity Surveyors and Dominic Bonnesse Architects for the facelift. The development agency, through funding from NMBM, will be investing approximately R20 million in the Tramways redevelopment, and is currently preparing designs for the building for which construction should be completed by the end

of 2014. “We will be using the building for our new office space which we will possibly share with Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism (NMBT). By investing in and working from the Tramways building, we hope that businesses and the private sector in the Bay will follow public sector investment and move back to the CBD,” said MBDA CEO Pierre Voges. “The puzzle which we have been building piece by piece since 2005 is coming together nicely. It is encouraging to see companies like Boomtown and popular coffee shop Roastmasters operating their businesses in the Baakens Valley area as that is what we would like to achieve by investing in the CBD,” added Voges. The MBDA will also be commencing with Phase 1 of the Belmont Terrace Environmental Upgrade in Central, which is roughly a R10 million investment and includes an upgrade of part of Bird Street, Belmont Terrace, Trinder Square and the Little Theatre. Construction should be completed by the first quarter of 2014.

Imperial Russian Ballet at Opera House BALLETOMANES in Port Elizabeth will be treated to a one-night only performance of the Imperial Russian Ballet at the PE Opera House on Sunday, July 1, at 3pm. The company consists of outstanding dancers trained by famous ballet teachers in Russia and also attracts leading artists from European and American companies. Its repertoire includes a number of full-length classical masterpieces, together with aspects of modern choreography. The Port Elizabeth programme features Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana in the first act, with scenes and extracts from classical masterpieces in the second act. Skoolhoof tree af ná 40 jaar TINNEKE GOEDHALS DIE Laerskool Kabega se skoolhoof, Bennie Black, tree ná 40 jaar uit die onderwys. Hierdie Vrydag mag dalk die laaste dag wees wat hy ná 15 jaar die septer as skoolhoof swaai, maar hy sal vir altyd onthou word vir sy goeie menseverhoudings, leierskap en toewyding. Hy het vroeg in sy lewe ontdek hy wil ’n beroep beoefen waar hy met mense kan werk en nie heeldag in ’n kantoor hoef te sit nie. “Ek was nog nie een oomblik spyt dat ek in die

onderwys is nie en as ek my lewe kon oorhê sou ek weer dieselfde beroepskeuse gemaak het,” sê Black. “Ek glo die onderwys is ’n roeping.” As jongmens het hy dit oorweeg om ’n advokaat, polisieman of predikant te word, maar as skoolhoof kry hy die geleentheid om al daardie rolle te vertolk. Nadat hy sy studies voltooi het by die Graaff-Reinet Onderwyskollege in 1971, het hy die daaropvolgende jaar sy onderwysloopbaan by die Laerskool Tjaart van der Walt in PE begin. In 1981 het hy by die Laerskool Rowallanpark se personeel aangesluit en die pos as departementshoof bekleë tot en met 1992 toe hy aange-

stel is as skoolhoof van die Laerskool Cunningham. Hy het ook die almagamasie van Cunningham en die Laerskool Walmer hanteer, wat vandag die Laerskool Setlaarspark heet. Tussen die skoolhouery deur het hy ook nog tyd gevind vir verdere studies en kan hy, buiten sy onderwysgraad, ook ’n graad in spesiale onderwys, honeursgraad en ’n B.Ed graad agter sy naam skryf. Hy het sy liefde vir spesiale klas-onderrig ontdek toe hy destyds as tweedejaarstudent vir ’n maand moes uithelp by ’n skool in Graaff-Reinet. Sy betrokkenheid by ’n hele paar komitees (sien kassie), het interaksie tussen die skool en die gemeenskap bevorder. Hy glo aan deelnemende bestuur en sê die sukses van die skool kan

toegeskryf word aan die ontsettende harwerkendheid van die personeel. “Dit was ’n spanpoging tussen die personeel, ouers en leerlinge en dan natuurlik die genade van Bo. Dit help ook om baie jongmense in diens te hê. Hulle is bereid om die ekstra myl te stap en hulle kom altyd met nuwe idees vorendag,” sê Black. Oor die uitdienstreding sê hy dit is moeilik om sy gevoelens in woorde te omskep. “Ek gaan veral die kameraderie baie mis.” Hy vertel met trots dat die skool verlede jaar drie nuwe klasse uit die skoolfonds aangebou het. Die skool het hierdie jaar met 100 leerders gegroei en spog met ’n leerdertal van 870 kinders. Wat die toekoms van die land se onderwys betref, sal hy graag wil sien dat daar genoeg poste voorsien word vir nuwe onderwysers in skole. “Dit sal ’n gedeelte van onsekerheid wegvat, as jy weet jy kan met die voltooiing van jou studies vir ’n staatspos aansoek doen.” Hy het ook groot waardering vir sy vrou wat hom ten alle tye tydens sy

loopbaan ondersteun het. Sy vrou, Anna-Marie, was ook vir jare ’n onderwyser tot en met haar aftrede en twee van sy drie kinders het ook in hul ouers se voetspore gevolg en is vandag onderwysers by privaatskole. In ’n vraag wat hy beplan vir die toekoms het hy skertsend gesê: “Om niks te doen is ook om iets te doen.” Hy gaan hom besig hou met die Arbitiro-mannekoor waar hy ook as voorsitter dien. Verder is hy en sy vrou baie lief vir tuinmaak en reis. Black het in 2006 erkenning gekry vir die onbaatsugtige diens wat hy tot die onderwys en gemeenskap lewer toe die Lifetime Achievement Award aan hom toegeken is. Volgens sy sekretaresses is die welsyn van die kinders eerste op sy prioriteits-lys en sal hy enigiets in sy vermoë doen om hul toekoms in die onderwys te verseker. “Hy sal altyd ’n positiewe kenmerk in almal wat hy ontmoet raaksien en kan met enige persoon oor enige onderwerp ’n lang gesprek voer.”

Personal message from Bernice Barnard, Chief Financial Officer for A-Bay Stationers and The Stationery Dock: One is always amazed about the new challenges that face business today. What always strikes us is the series of successes and how those have been achieved against all odds for all our companies, including both A-Bay Stationers and The Stationery Dock. They're not looking for hand-outs, and Brian re-iterated this on more than one occasion. They're willing to put in the effort and work for their income with their workshops and programs. We have received an incredible amount of media exposure and believe me, as a corporate sponsor on this Wheelchair Wednesday project, we have gotten back so much more than what we may have sponsored. We have taken away from this project an incredible sense of pride. We have the warm fuzzy feeling. Our staff have embraced our ethos of giving and giving freely without expecting anything in return. Lastly, we learned so much and we felt the vulnerability whilst in the wheelchair, and have the greatest respect for all persons living with disabilities. A mirror reflects a man's face, but what he is really like, is shown by the friends he chooses. The simple but true fact of life is that you become like those with whom you closely associate – for the good and the bad. Again, we choose APD to be a friend of A-Bay Stationers and The Stationery Dock. Be careful where you stop to inquire for directions along the road of life. Wise is the person who fortifies his life with the right friendships. If you run with wolves, you learn to howl, but if you associate with eagles, you will learn to soar to great heights. APD creates valuable job opportunities for the disabled in Nelson Mandela Bay E stablished in 1940, the Association for the Physically Disabled Nelson Mandela Bay (APD NMB) is a non-profit organisation located at 55 Paterson Road, Port Elizabeth. The disability sector that they serve includes persons who are physically and intellectually impaired, speech- and hearing-impaired, partially sighted, or who have cerebral palsy, polio and or epilepsy. At their premises in Paterson Road, they provide income-generating opportunities to 150 people with disabilities. Their two specially adapted busses provide transport for their mobility-impaired workers. More mobile workers receive a subsidy to allow them to use public transport. All workers are provided with a basic daily meal. Their workshops provide income-generating opportunities for persons with disabilities that assist them financially and allow them to attain their maximum level of independence. Some services that they provide include the following: . Wheelchair-shop: they sell and hire wheelchairs and assistive devices and distribute free wheelchairs that are supplied by their generous funders. Last year they

successfully distributed 500 wheelchairs to worthy recipients. . Industrial workshops: they do labour intensive contract work such as bulk posting, packaging and assembling of components, to mention but a few. Typical clients are Marina Sea Salt (labeling spice bottles), NMMU, Spicer Axle, Volpes and several others. . Sewing centre: Here they manufacture workwear for major companies in and around the city. Some names worth mentioning are Aspen, Dulux, General Motors as well as a host of hospitality establishments. They are also producing a range of babywear for Woolworths. . Screen-printing department: This newly established department not only compliments the Sewing Workshop by printing corporate names and logos on the workwear that they manufacture, but it also supplies printed T-shirts to a broad base of companies, Britos Bakery being one of their major clients. Last year this department secured and delivered the national order for 20 000 printed golf shirts for the annual Casual Day Campaign. Pricing is subject to quantity and complexity of design. . Embroidery department: This development was implemented last year. Pricing is subject to

disabilities into permanent positions, in the mainstream market and at all levels. They assist their clients to do a better job of attracting, developing and retaining good human capital. They provide service of excellence in all different sectors and specialize in guidance with recruiting persons with disabilities. Their department also deals with skills deve-

lopment and training in different fields. . Sensitisation service: The huge need for people at all levels to understand and accordingly learn how to accommodate persons with disabilities in the workplace is handled by this department. This service has been successfully workshopped to several corporate and government departments. The most recent being some 200 employees from the Eastern Cape Department of Justice offices in Mthatha, Queenstown, East London and Port Elizabeth. . Accessibility surveys: Given their vast knowledge on this matter, they consult with stakeholders in all sectors from architects right down to B&B owners to ensure that the standards that are legislated are upheld. . Social work services: Their team of three qualified social workers provides individual and family counseling and generic social work services to clients. . Parking disks: They handle all applications for the famous “Wheelchair Parking Disk”. All applicants are carefully screened to ensure that only persons who legitimately require the use of the specially designed, wider parking bays are issued with a permit.

aar heers heelwat verwarring oor die wetlike aspekte rondom wie op parkeerplekke mag parkeer wat vir motoriste met fisieke gestremdhede afgebaken is, en die prosedure wat ’n persoon met fisieke gestremdhede moet volg om ’n vrystellingspermit – ook bekend as ’n parkeerskyfie – te bekom. Mens kan maklik redeneer dat iemand in ’n rolstoel mos maar die afstand in sy rolstoel kan ry, so waaroor kla hy as hy nie ’n parkeerplek naby die ingang van die sentrum kry nie. Parkeerplekke vir gestremdes is egter 3,5 meter breed sodat daar genoeg plek is dat die persoon sy rolstoel langs sy motor kan laat staan sodat hy uit die motor in die rolstoel kan oorskuif. Ander parkeerplekke is te smal sodat die persoon nie sy motordeur heeltemal kan oopmaak om sy rolstoel in te pas nie. Mense is geneig om te dink dat as jy op ’n parkeerplek vir gestremdes parkeer, jy nie ’n boete kan kry nie omdat dit privaat eiendom is wat aan

Motoriste moet dus bedag wees daarop. In 2005 het ek Port Elizabeth se verkeersafdeling genader met ’n versoek dat veiligheidsbeamptes as vredesbeamptes opgelei moet word. Dit sou hulle bemagtig om verkeersboetes as reservisverkeersopsigters uit te reik. Met die volle samewerking van Hamilton Totoyi, die indertydse waarnemende verkeershoof, is die eerste kursus aangebied en 20 veilig-

heidsbeamptes van verskeie maatskappye is vir ’n week opgelei en deur die provinsiale polisiekommissaris as reservis-verkeersopsigters aangestel. Sedertdien lei die verkeersafdeling jaarliks veiligheidsbeamptes vir ’n week op en ná aflegging van ’n eksamen word hulle aangestel. Gestremdes móét hul parkeerskyfie duidelik op die voorruit aanbring om te verseker dat hulle nie beboet word omdat hul voertuie op ’n parkeerplek wat vir gestremdes afgebaken is, geparkeer is nie. Die boete is tans R300 vir dié oortreding. Regsbeamptes mag onder geen

omstandighede hul eie oordeel gebruik nie. Hulle gebruik ’n asemtoetser om te kyk of jy onder die invloed van drank bestuur; verkeersbeamptes gebruik ’n spoedlokval om te sien of jy vinniger as die spoedgrens ry. Daarom mag ’n wetstoepasser ook nie sy eie oordeel gebruik om te bepaal of jy gestremd is of nie.

Aansoek om vrystellingspermit Die vereniging vir mense met fisieke gestremdhede (APB) Nelson Mandelabaai is die aangestelde agente om jou aansoek om ’n parkeerskyfie te hanteer. Die prosedure wat gevolg moet word, verg dat die aansoeker eerstens ’n aansoekvorm by die APD by hul perseel by Pattersonweg 55 in Noordeinde moet afhaal, of skakel vir Laura Schrief by 0 041 484 5426 om te versoek dat ’n aansoekvorm via e-pos of faks aangestuur word. ’n Administrasiefooi van R25 is betaalbaar aan die APD wanneer die aansoekvorm ingedien word. ’n Gedeelte van die aansoekvorm moet deur ’n mediese praktisyn ingevul

word. ’n Paneel, wat uit twee mense van APD, twee arbeidsterapeute en ’n verteenwoordiger van die Nelson Mandela Metro-verkeersafdeling bestaan, kom elke tweede Dinsdag van die maand om 14:00 by APD se hoofkantoor bymekaar. Alle aansoekers word versoek om dan ’n onderhoud met die paneel by te woon. Wanneer die aansoek goedgekeur is, is ’n bedrag van R103 aan die verkeersafdeling betaalbaar. Die parkeerskyfie word dan onmiddellik uitgereik. Op die parkeerskyfie word jou naam en identiteitsnommer aangedui. Dié skyfie kan in enige motor waarmee jy reis of vervoer word, gebruik word. Ek doen ’n beroep op alle motoriste om asseblief nie die parkeerplekke wat vir gestremdes afgebaken is, te gebruik nie. Ons het ’n plakker gesien wat op die ruit van ’n motor wat onwettig op ’n parkeerplek vir gestremdes geplak was. Hierdie plakker het heel toepaslik gelees: “Ek sien jy het my parkeerplek gevat. Wil jy my gestremdheid ook hê?”

Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees bied meer waarde DIE mense van die Sondagsriviervallei gaan seker maak besoekers aan die jaarlikse Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees, aangebied in samewerking met DStv, gaan vanjaar selfs meer waarde vir hulle geld kry. Die organiseerders het alle fooie op 2011 se vlakke gehou, terwyl die verskeidenheid ervarings en vermaak vir die hele gesin vir 2012 uitgebrei is. Dit vind van Vrydag, 29 Junie tot Sondag, 1 Julie 2012 plaas. “Ons het uit samehorigheid met ons besoekers en uitstallers in dié moeilike tye nie die hektoegangsfooie of dié van uitstallings en kosstalletjies verhoog nie,” sê feesdirekteur Jenni Honsbein. “Ons kon dit regkry omdat baie van ons verskaffers ook hulle koste gevries het en ook danksy die bykomende borgskap wat die Wildsfees, nou in sy 11de jaar, gelok het, sê sy. Die Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees is ’n gemeenskapsprojek wat deur ’n maat-

skappy sonder winsoogmerk bedryf word. “Die Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees het die afgelope tien jaar met rasse skrede gegroei en ’n fees van dié aard is nie sonder strategiese vennote moontlik nie. Absa glo dat sy belegging in hierdie fees die mense van die Sondagsriviervallei op tasbare wyse bevoordeel aangesien hy al die wins in gemeenskapsgebaseerde projekte terugploeg,” sê Kgalaletso Tlhoaele, Absa Streekhoof Oos- en Suid-Kaap. “Sy vennootskap ondersteun die fokusgebiede van die fees synde toerisme, die omgewing en omgewingsopvoeding. Die sukses hiervan sal die volhoubaarheid van die klein maar belangrike gemeenskap van Kirkwood en die groter Sondagsriviervallei verseker, wat baie belangrik is vir Absa se besigheid,” sê hy. Vanjaar se Wildsfees sluit ’n vol vermaakprogram in, asook die ervaring om by meer as 300 spesialisstalletjies te

koop, wildsritte, wilde diere, wildvertonings en die jaarlikse wildsveiling. Besoekers sal ook ’n fees van nuwighede ervaar. Die fees bied vir die eerste keer ’n “sybokhaarreis” aan. Ontwerpe van die samewerkingsprojekte tussen die Nelson Mandela Metropolitaanse Universiteit (NMMU) en Mode Universiteit in Japan sal vertoon word, saam met ander sybokhaarprodukte en lewende bokke in ’n Sybokhaar Suid-Afrika-uitstalling. Nog ’n nuwigheid is die opvoering van ’n drama, “My Naam is Ellen Pakkies,” die aangrypende verhaal van ’n ma van die Kaapse Vlakte wat haar tikverslaafde seun vermoor het. Ellen word vertolk deur Vinette Ebrahim – ook bekend as Charmaine Meintjes in 7de Laan. Op ’n ligter noot sal Quattro – “’n revue met ’n Italiaanse geur” vir die eerste keer in die Oos-Kaap op die verhoog te sien wees. Baie van die verhoogkunstenaars sal vanjaar vir die

eerste keer in die Oos-Kaap optree. Hoofkunstenaars sluit Karen Zoid, Snotkop, Arno Carstens, Elvis Blue, Valiant Swart, Romanz en Adams in, en Chris Chameleon en sy orkes sal die fees op ’n hoë noot afsluit. Baba-krokodille sal vir die eerste keer hulle verskyning maak in die “Walk on the Wildside”-ervaring, waar besoekers ook aan slange, uile en ander roofvoëls kan raak. Die Addo Olifant Nasionale Park se uitstalling is altyd een van die hoogtepunte,” sê Honsbein. Pikkewyne sal ook vir die eerste keer binnelands in Kirkwood te sien wees en die Suid-Afrikaanse Marine Rehabilitasie- en Opvoedingsentrum (SAMREC) sal demonstrasies gee en praatjies hou oor die rehabilitasie en lot van die hoogs bedreigde Afrikapikkewyn. Daar sal ook praatjies wees oor die beheer van roofdiere. “En natuurlik sal ons op die stryd teen renosterstropery fokus, wat ongelukkig nog ’n nuwigheid by die fees is,” sê sy.

Vanjaar se Absa Kirkwood Fees sluit ’n groeiende landbouskou in, wat verskaffers sal gebruik om ’n aantal nuwe produkte bekend te stel, terwyl die motorskou – die grootste in die Oos-Kaap – ’n aantal nuwe modelle sal insluit. Vir die wynliefhebber sal daar nuwe oesjare en variëteite in die Kyknet Leefstyl Plein te vinde wees – die plek waar kosliefhebbers ook nuwe smake en geure sal kan geniet. “Kinders kan in die Yum-Chum Kidz Zone te kere gaan, dus is almal welkom by die Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees, aangebied in samewerking met DStv,” sê Honsbein. OK se grootste wildsveiling vernuwe NUWE bloed en ’n nuwe datum lui ’n nuwe era in vir die jaarlikse Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees-wildsveiling, wat een van die top drie wildsveilings in die land is. Vir die eerste 10 jaar van die Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees, aangebied in samewerking met DStv in 2012, is die veiling op die Saterdag van die feesnaweek aangebied. Vanjaar word dit na Vrydag geskuif om bieërs van elders te akkommodeer – waarvan baie hulle gesinne wil bring om die vele attraksies van die Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees te geniet, luidens die veilingorganiseerder Johan Swart. “Ons het na die bedryf geluister en die veiling met ’n dag vervroeg. Die tendens in die bedryf is om veilings op weeksdae te hou. Dit help ook met die vervoer van die wild na dit gekoop is,” sê hy. Die veiling is een van die min in die

land waar bieërs die meeste van die gesogte diere kan sien, wat in bomas gehou word vir die verkoping. Vanjaar kom ongeveer 40 siektevrye buffels van die Addo Olifant Nasionale Park onder die hamer. Daar is veral twee buffelbulle van die Addo Olifant Nasionale Park wat na verwagting telers en reservaateienaars van regoor die land sal lok. Die grootste is “Bismarck,” met ’n horingspan van 118cm, met Hercules wat kort op sy hakke is met ’n horingspan van 114cm. Vanjaar se afslaer is Brandon Leer van Brandon Leer Auction Services. Leer is alombekend as een van die beste afslaers van lewende hawe in die land en ’n spesialis in wildsverkopings. Hy neem by Roy Hayes oor, wat die veilings die eerste 10 jaar hanteer het. “Roy het gehelp om die Kirkwoodwildsveiling bekend te maak en die feit

VANJAAR se Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees, aangebied in samewerking met DStv, is letterlik “waar die wild is.” Glibberig, geveer, verwoed en slymerig – die Walk on the Wild Side-ervaring is vernuwe en het tande gekry. ’n Nuwe luidsprekerstelsel sal sorg dat besoekers niks van die onderskeie opwindende demonstrasies en praatjies misloop wat oor die naweek gehou word nie. Darren Kleynhans van die Addo Roofvoël- en Reptielsentrum is terug op openbare aandrang. “Vanjaar sal besoekers deur die uitstalling van lewende roofvoëls kan loop en vrae vra,” sê Kleynhans. Die dapperes kan ook ’n lui-slang streel en na baba-krokodille kyk. Al ooit gewonder hoe ’n leeu se spoor lyk of hoe om die grootte van ’n dier te bepaal deur na sy spore te kyk? Besoek die Addo Sanparke-uitstalling, wat daarop gemik is om omgewingsbewustheid en -kennis by kinders uit te brei, asook hulle kusuitstalling. Die erebewaarders sal ’n insiggewende uitstalling in die Walk on the Wildside-tent hê om bewustheid oor die renosterstropingkrisis te skep. Hulle sal ook Vrydag om 12:00 en Saterdag om 13:00 aanbiedings oor die stropingskrisis doen. Vir diegene wat die meer “visserige” kant van die natuur geniet, sal Alan Hobson, kunsvlieghengelgids wat by die R.E.F.F.I.S. (Register of Experienced Fly Fishing Instructors, Schools) geakkrediteer is, Vrydag om 10:00, Saterdag om 15:00 en Sondag om 10:30 kunsvlieghengeldemonstrasies voor die Vodacom Paviljoen hou. Blue Crane Tourism sal ook toerismeprodukte in SomersetOos en die Blue Crane-roete uitstal. Aan die marinekant sal die SA

Marine Rehabilitasie- en Opvoedingsentrum (SAMREC) ’n praktiese uitstalling van opgestopte pikkewyne hê en byderhand wees om enige vrae oor hierdie unieke en bedreigde voëls te beantwoord. Hulle sal ook Vrydag om 15:00 ’n demonstrasie hou oor hoe om pikkewyne te red. Die Oos-Kaapse Wildbestuursvereniging (ECGMA) en die Konfederasie van Jagtersverenigings van Suid-Afrika (CHASA) is vanjaar terug by die fees en het ’n splinternuwe demonstrasie oor hoe om ’n trofee te dek (die vel te verwyder en bewaar), wat Vrydag om 11:00 in die tent sal plaasvind en Saterdag dieselfde tyd herhaal sal word. ’n Demonstrasie oor die voorbereiding van die vleis van ’n trofee sal Saterdag om 12:00 plaasvind. Dié demonstrasies is nie vir bangbroeke nie en kinders moet deur hulle ouers vergesel word. Op ’n ernstiger noot sal Taffy Mulder praatjies en aanbiedings hou oor die verhouding tussen boere en roofdiere wat lewende hawe bedreig. Mulder sal lig werp op hierdie omstrede kwessie en help om die stryd aan beide kante uit te lig. Die praatjies vind Vrydag om 10:30 en 12:00 en Saterdag om 10:30 plaas. Die Walk on the Wildside-tent sal ook met talle stalletjies en uitstallings van plaaslike wildsplase spog. Moet dit beslis nie misloop nie! We are expecting over 100 dogs from all over to take part,” says Jakkie Erasmus, chairman of the Eastern Cape Boerboel Club (ECBC). “This includes the new and rare black Boerboel specimens.” All Boerboel owners are invited to take part in the competition whether their dogs are registered or not. Breeders and owners compete in separate categories with their own dedicat-

ed prizes sponsored by Montego. The show will focus on the temperament of the dogs which will be showcased by the residents of Huis Minette, a home for mentally disabled. Residents of Huis Minette “co-own” the dogs, and benefit therapeutically from their company and loving natures. Entertainment menu will chase the cold TOP entertainment for young and old, a game auction and gourmet foods are on the menu to dispel the winter chill at the annual Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees over the weekend of June 29 to July 1. Now in its eleventh year, the Wildsfees attracted 42 000 visitors in 2011, making it one of the country’s top events – and the only festival to include an auction of premier game. Visitors can browse at over 300 speciality stalls, and savour the unusual game and gourmet foods on offer. There is also a choice of the best vintages from select wine cellars. The Kidz Zone is the place for the younger members, while the rest are entertained by shows, live jazz and

many of the country’s top artists on the Eastern Cape’s biggest stage. Headline music acts to perform over the weekend this year include Karen Zoid, Elvis Blue, Arno Carstens, Emo Adams, and Chris Chameleon and band.

Friday The music entertainment will start at 3pm on Friday. Performers on stage during the evening include Flooze, Wicus van der Merwe, Nadine and Band, Nicolis Louw, Snotkop and Karen Zoid.

Nolunthando* het in Januarie 2011 vir die eerste keer na die dagsorgsentrum gekom. Sy was vier jaar oud. Haar ma, wat by van haar bure gehoor het van die sentrum, het haar hierheen gebring en gesê sy soek ’n plek vir haar kind, want geen ander instansie kon Nolunthando versorg nie omdat sy nie kon loop nie. Ek het die ma uitgevra oor die swangerskap en die geboorte en nadat ek die kind ondersoek het, besef dat daar ’n suurstoftekort tydens die geboorte was, wat dele van Nolunthando se brein aangetas het – dié dele wat haar vermoë om te loop, beïnvloed. Dié gestremdheid word serebrale verlamming genoem. Met baie terapie is dit moontlik om gesonde dele van die brein te aktiveer om die verantwoordelikhede van die beseerde gedeelte oor te neem. In Nolunthando se geval was dit egter nie genoeg nie. Sy sou ook ’n tenomonie moes kry, waar die tendons in die bene tydens ’n operasie losgesny moes word. Hierdie operasies word by die Livingstone-hospitaal gratis op kinders met serebrale verlamming uitgevoer deur ’n ortopediese chirurg. Ek het Nolunthando en haar ma aan die dokter voorgestel en hy het saamgestem dat hierdie operasie Nolunthando in staat sou stel om te loop. Daar is gewoonlik ’n baie lang waglys,

Nolunthando moes ’n maand met gips van haar tone tot by die heupies deurbring. Ek het hulle tuis besoek en vir haar ma oefeninge gewys wat sy met Nolunthando kon doen om haar maagspiere sterker te maak en haar met haar balans te help. Nadat die gips verwyder is, het Nolunthando teruggekom na die dagsorgsentrum. Ons het elke dag met haar oefeninge gedoen om die spiere wat sy nog nooit tevore gebruik het nie, te aktiveer. Aan die begin was sy baie onseker van haar bewegings en sy was baie bang om op te staan en haar bene te gebruik. Maar Nolunthando het regtig hard ge-

werk en het ’n baie sterk willetjie. Na ses maande van konstante terapie kon sy op haar eie staan en met ’n loopraam loop. Dit is nou ’n jaar later en sy kan al ’n paar treë op haar eie loop. Sy kan ook teen ’n muur loop deur met net haar een hand teen die muur te druk. Sy sal waarskynlik oor nog ’n jaar heeltemal op haar eie kan loop, of miskien met behulp van krukke. Dit is ’n lang proses, maar die kool is beslis die sous werd! Haar ouers is baie tevrede. Nolunthando is nou baie meer onafhanklik en baie meer selfversekerd. Sy sal hopelik teen die begin van volgende jaar ’n hoofstroomskool kan bywoon, want haar intellektuele vermoëns is volkome volgens haar ouderdom ontwikkel. Busisiwe* het in Februarie 2011 na die sentrum toe begin kom. Sy

was vier jaar oud en erg fisiek gestremd. Sy het geen beheer oor haar bewegings gehad nie en was totaal afhanklik van haar versorger. Sy kon nie op haar eie sit of staan nie. Voordat sy na die sentrum toe gekom het, het sy meestal gelê. Sy kon nie haar knieë of elmboë buig nie en het nog nooit regop gesit of haar eie liggaamsgewig gevoel nie. Vir fisieke ontwikkeling en die ontwikkeling van die ingewande is dit baie belangrik om te staan. Busisiwe se tendons is ook tydens ’n operasie by Livingstonehospitaal geopereer. Sy sal waarskynlik nooit heeltemal op haar eie kan staan nie, maar met behulp van ’n staanraam sal Busisiwe haar balans kan verbeter en ook haar bolyf sterker kan maak. Haar ingewande sal ook meer in die regte posisies wees en sy sal meer bewegings kan uitvoer sodat sy nie soveel kontraksies kry nie. Vir Busisiwe was die operasie en die tyd daarna nie maklik nie. Haar ma het haar goed versorg, maar Busisiwe kon nie lekker verstaan wat aan die gang is nie. Ek het die gesin ’n paar keer tuis besoek en vir haar ma gewys hoe sy vir Busisiwe moes neersit terwyl sy in gips was. Nadat die gips afgehaal is, het sy teruggekom dagsorgsentrum toe en ons het stadigaan met oefeninge begin. Sy het ook spalke aangehad om haar knieë en enkels te ondersteun as sy staan. Ses weke na die operasie het sy vir die eerste keer gestaan. Busisiwe het baie emosionele ondersteuning nodig gehad, aangesien

dit vir haar ’n splinternuwe ervaring was. Maar nou, ses maande later, is sy mal daaroor om te staan. Sy glimlag en sy begin nou lag en is baie tevrede om regop te wees en alles vanuit ’n nuwe perspektief te ervaar. Samkelo* kom nou al vir meer as vier jaar na die sentrum toe. Hierdie seuntjie het hope potensiaal en is baie gretig om te leer. Hy was 17 maande oud toe hy meningitis en ’n beroerte gehad het. Daarna was die linkerkant van sy liggaam verlam en dit was vir hom moeilik om teen dieselfde tempo as ander kinders van sy ouderdom te leer. Maar hy was steeds ’n baie slim seuntjie! Nadat hy sekere toetse geslaag het en vir ’n jaar gewag het, is hy na ’n spesiale skool vir kinders met fisieke gestremdhede verwys. Die onderwysers daar is gespesialiseerd en het die nodige toerusting om sulke kinders te onderrig. Dit was ’n lang en senutergende proses aangesien daar nie genoeg spesiale skole vir kinders met spesiale behoeftes in Port Elizabeth is nie. Maar ons het saam met Samkelo se ouers geveg vir sy reg tot onderrig en aangedring op plasing in die skool. he A-Bay Wheelchair Wednesday campaign has exceeded our wildest expectations. The fact that we could start a unique ground and barrier breaking initiative that was taken seriously by business at large in our city, was refreshing. Whilst we were determined not to lose sight of succeeding to deliver on the empowerment aspect, we knew we had to offer businesses an aspect that ticked the community service and business benefit boxes. Over and above the extensive media coverage that the campaign, its sponsors and participants have received via our media partners during the campaign, we are releasing this eight page supplement. The A-Bay Wheelchair Wednesday project, initiated and driven by APD NMB (The Association for Persons with Disabilities Nelson Mandela Bay) has seen 50 needy children receiving free wheelchairs. In excess of R300 000 has been raised to cover the running costs at the APD Day Care Centre on the outskirts of Motherwell where APD looks after 29 children with

Die winste wat deur die veldtog gegenereer is, sal aangewend word om die dienste wat by die APD-dagsorgsentrum in Motherwell aangebied word, voort te sit. By hierdie sentrum word daar na 29 gestremde kinders omgesien.

As a Formula 1 Grand Prix, Valencia isn’t one that necessarily gets the heart racing or confines fans to the edge of their seats. Even so, if there has ever been a chance to turn its reputation around then 2012 has all that is required to do just that. The 5.4 km long lap is made up of long straights and slow corners with very few opportunities for overtaking. From the perspective of car set-up, the slow-and medium-speed corners require a car with good, slow speed traction and faultless precision from the drivers as the limited run-off area is further exaggerated by the proximity of the barriers.

Before the start of the 2012 season, the hope had been for, at best, a competitive fight between Red Bull and McLaren. Much to the surprise of everyone the season has been the most unpredictable in the history of the sport with well-documented seven winners in the first seven races. Nevertheless, the record-breaking run of winners will have to come to an end at some point. As the list of possible new winners in 2012 gets ever shorter the probability of a first repeat winner this weekend is highly likely. Lotus’s Romain Grosjean, however, is hoping the run continues as he’s approaching the European GP with nothing but victory on his mind. To his credit it does appear that conditions will play to the strengths of the E20; the high track temperature will be a positive for the Enstonebased team and the absence of the supersoft tyre, which the team have struggled to heat up, will be very much welcomed. Main competition could come from the Italian stable as Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa both arrive with a well-primed prancing horse. The rate of development and hard work put in by Ferrari has been both staggering and impressive. A mere four months ago the team were in the doldrums with seemingly no hope of being

competitive. Yet, through stellar driving and gutsy determination, Alonso was able to keep the team in the hunt while they worked tirelessly to develop and fit several upgrade packages.

Roux qualifies for Olympics PE’s top open water swimmer, Jessica Roux, had the race of her lifetime the weekend before last in Setubal Bay, Portugal. Our former Collegiate High School head girl and current SPAR Redhouse River Mile ladies champion earned a 2012 London Olympics qualification spot by beating fellow South African Natalie du Toit at the final FINA 10km Olympic qualifying swim in Portugal this month. Following a hard season of specialised training under SA swim coach, Graham Hill, in Durban, Roux almost blew her chances on Saturday as she miscounted her laps and, believing she still had one more lap to swim, eased off the pace to allow Du Toit to swim in front of her going into the current. With about 100m to go Roux suddenly realised that everyone was veering towards the finish tunnel and she had to out-sprint the much favoured du Toit to claim the sole Olympic slot for

The Men’s 10km qualifying race was as exciting, with current SPAR Redhouse River Mile Men’s Champion and the Bell Buoy Challenge champion, Troyden Prinsloo of Durban, claiming his Olympic qualifier by beating fellow countryman and 2008 Olympic swimmer, Chad Ho. Both swimmers now await SASCOC approval for inclusion in Team South Africa for the 2012 London Olympics starting at the end of July. Swimming South Africa is apparently motivating its inclusion as a swimmer like Roux still has the potential of swimming at another two Olympic Games after London and the experience of taking part this year would certainly position her well for medal contention in 2016.

International Surfers Flock To J-Bay Over 120 international surfers are expected to descend on Jeffreys Bay for the 2012 Billabong Pro J-Bay. Thirteen of the top 32 surfers in the world have entered, as well as the majority of South Africa’s top competitors. International surfers include the likes of John John Florence, Kolohe Andino, Adam Melling and Mark Occhilupo who won the event back in 1984, as well as Adriano de Souza and the Hobgood brothers CJ and Damien. The local contingent includes seasoned campaigner Travis Logie, and two times and defending champion Jordy Smith, as well as South African stalwarts Royden Bryson and Davey Weare. “One hundred-and-sixty-five surfers wanting to be at the 2012 Billabong Pro J-Bay is awesome,” said ASP Africa Operations Manager Colin Fitch, when entries closed last week. “Who would have believed the response we have got from professional surfers around the globe? Some are willing to be here just to surf the one event. There are 125 International and 40 South Africans wanting to surf one of the best 10 surf breaks in the world.” Colin’s role in ASP Africa sees him able to objectively compare similar such events around the world; and he added, “This may just be the most successful 6 Star Men’s event on the 2012 ASP World Tour.” The Billabong Pro J-Bay is set to run from 10 to 15 July and is a 6 Star Men’s event on the ASP World Tour.

Boks: still a work in progress YOU COULD almost see it coming – after all the quotes from players, coaches, experts and newspaper headlines in the week following the Springboks’ first test victory over England in Durban. Here are just a few: “Boks to take it up a notch”; “Good start – here’s something Boks can build on”; “It’s better (Ellis Park) kicking at altitude” (Morné Steyn); “Ellis Park’s great, the home of SA rugby” (Bismarck du Plessis); “I was impressed with the intensity and attitude of the guys in training” (Captain, Jean de Villiers). So... all seemed set for a bumper Saturday of Springbok joy. And after an almost perfect, near seamless first half with the Boks leading 25-10, those dreams and predictions seemed about to come true. Until... the South Africans began to believe in their own indestructibility created by these complimentary myths. But... then it all went wrong until the 73rd minute when rangy Man of the Match, JP Pietersen, galloped in for a try that made it safe at 36-27 and gave the home team the series 2-0. Now... what are the headlines saying? “Boks win by their finger tips”; “Boks nearly let it slip!” Make no mistake – and this column was as guilty as the rest of the praise-singers – this England side aren’t pushovers. Go back over the statistics and you’ll find that they “won” the second half 17-11. That, while the South Africans were patting themselves on the back, England scored

two converted tries in the space of just 10 minutes – 14 points. The Boks’ only reply, besides Pietersen’s blush-saving try, being two Morne Steyn penalties. At times, when the camera flashed to the Bok coaches’ box, new man in charge, Heyneke Meyer, looked dangerously close to a breakdown! Good job he had ever-jovial Rassie Erasmus at his side! And Meyer must take some of the blame. On reflection, if your wife tells you Meyer erred in switching Francois Hougaard to the wing when introducing Ruaan Pienaar to the mix, she’s right. The ever-reliable Pat Lambie having to be rested at halftime, with a twisted ankle, was unfortunate. But the vacant fullback spot, as well as the team as a whole, would have been better served by Pienaar at fullback and leaving Hougaard at No 9. Fine player though he is, Cheetahs’ hooker, Adriaan Strauss, should not have been brought on quite so early. Bismarck du Plessis, besides a tendency for butterfingers at times, was having a ball. He is the internal combustion engine of the green-and-gold front five that gives it that extra shift into overdrive. In spite of this somewhat heavy load of criticism, the Springboks possess the makings of a fine side. Hopefully Lambie will be fit for the final shoot-out in PE. Even more important will be the clearing up of Willem Alberts’ knee injury. England, meanwhile, have proved themselves brave foes and the final game should be
