Rise in theft out of cars BETTIE GILIOMEE

N alarming rise in the incidents of theft from vehicles has lead to the SA Police issuing a warning to car owners to ensure that their vehicles are in fact locked after activating the remote central locking device and not to leave their possessions in plain sight in cars. According to police spokesperson Capt. Sandra Janse van Rensburg, they cannot release statistics, but can state that there is an alarming increase in theft out of motor vehicles in the Mount Road, Humewood and Walmer Policing precincts. “Especially of great concern is the number of incidents where there are no visible signs of a break-in and which could be the result of car jamming,” said Janse van Rensburg. Car jamming is a new way for thieves to get easy entry into a vehicle by using a household remote device which interferes with the remote central locking of a vehicle. The owner leaves the car in a parking lot thinking he has locked it, and while he is away, the thieves ransack the car. Various incidents of this nature have been reported at shopping centres and even busy public roads all over the metro. “Although many of the theft cases are opportunistic in nature where

thieves see valuables in a car and break in to steal them, there are those that are organised,” said Janse van Rensburg. According to Van Rensburg, video footage of one such incident at a wellknown shopping centre in the Western Suburbs clearly shows a suspicious person in a BMW behind a parked car, pushing a remote while the victim is pushing his remote to lock the car. One of the suspects then follows the victim into the shops, while the other ransacks the car. Die Burger reported in January on the increase in the incidents of car jamming. One such victim was Bossie Bossert, who does technical work for Telkom. “My wife and I stopped at a shopping centre to go to a pharmacy. When we returned after a few minutes, my wife’s cellphone and other belongings, that were locked up in the boot, were gone,” he said. After this incident, he started investigating how this could be done. “One can basically use any household remote device which works at a certain frequency”. He also said that it doesn’t matter what make of vehicle it is. “I tried it on many different makes of vehicles and it works on any vehicle which uses that frequency.” Capt. Johan Rheeder, police spokesperson confirmed to Die Burger that he has also tested this theory and that it does work.

Street vendors frustrate Kragga Kamma Road residents ANNA PAUW THE municipality says residents should call the police and the police says it’s the municipality’s responsibility. This is how residents of Kragga Kamma Road in Sunridge Park are sent from pillar to post while frustration levels mount regarding street vendors trading in front of their houses. A resident (who would like to remain anonymous) on whose side-walk vendors are trading, said she is at her wits’ end. “The vendors are using our flower beds as ablution facilities and littering is a huge problem in front of our house.” Apart from this, she said that ven-

dors and their clients frequently block access to her home. “It is a huge frustration when one is unable to go into or come out of your own property.” This “informal shopping centre” is directly opposite the T-junction where Willowby and Kragga Kamma Roads meet. According to her, the vendors’ advertising boards often obstruct the view and as a result one cannot see oncoming traffic. “Accidents are a very regular occurrence in front of our house. In fact, it happens so regularly that we don’t even go out any more when we hear the brakes and then the bang.” DA councillor for this ward, Heinrich Muller, said it is most definitely the municipality’s responsibility to look into and resolve matters like this. “The health risk owing to the lack

of ablution facilities in a case like this is a huge concern.” Some of the vendors have erected semi-permanent structures on the side walk. Muller said this is in contravention with municipal bylaws and the municipality should remove these structures. Municipal spokesperson, Kupido Baron, said although they always try to assist people who are trying to make a living, they cannot allow that other people’s rights are jeopardised in the process. “We will most certainly follow up on these complaints with a thorough investigation,” said Baron. Some of the vendors have been doing business from here for more than five years. All of the vendors told PE Express that they don’t get any complaints from residents.

Horse therapy to assist in kids’ learning development ANNA PAUW A HORSE is said to be the projection of people’s dreams about themselves. Australian writer, Pam Brown, wrote, “. . . strong, powerful, beautiful - and it (a horse) has the capability of giving us escape from our mundane existence.” These mystical and majestic creatures have been part of peoples’ lives for centuries and it is no wonder that this special bond can be harnessed to the advantage of humans young and old. Liza van Zyl of Horse Worx Equitherapy Centre in Port Elizabeth said they use horses and ponies to assist learning development in children. “We learn through our senses. Touch, movement (including gravity), sight, sound, smell and taste.” According to Van Zyl many learning disabilities are caused by the brain’s inability to correctly register, organise and interpret information received from the senses. “Importantly, it is our sense of movement and gravity that is used as a reference from which all our other senses are processed.” She said their equitherapy programme was developed in conjunction with an occupational therapist and may help with cognitive abilities, motor skills development, concentration, social skills behavioural development and many more advantages. Claire Groeneveld of Kingsview Equestrian Centre in PE said she partners with horses to do team building for corporates. “Horses are colour blind and they don’t care whether a person is black or white, making them ideal diversity trainers.” She said horses have no concern with material goods and only judge character. “They pick up on your energy and can even match their heartbeat to yours. They innately read your body language, and cannot be fooled,” said Groeneveld. She said their teambuilding and Horse Sense workshops are designed to change the way people relate to coworkers and team members. “The Horse Sense programme is ideal for small businesses, corporates, individuals and anyone who wants to explore and improve their own interpersonal skills.”

According to the forum’s public relations officer, Fuzlin Rowan, the Forum is recognised by the Bethelsdorp Police Station and operates under the banner of the Community Policing Forum (CPF) “Since its inception four months ago, we have had representations at our weekly meetings from the SAPS

(Bethelsdorp) and the Dog Squad, Emergency Services (EMS), Traffic Department, our Local Ward Councillor and last but not least, representation from the Mayor’s Office,” said Rowan. West End Primary School has provided a classroom for all their meetings. “These meetings have yielded very positive commitments from the respective Departments to provide us with the necessary training that we require,” said Fuzlin. PE EXPRESS REPORTER WOOLWORTHS has said in a statement that they do not have any association with Junaine Stanley, who was named as their new debtors manager, in an advert recently placed in PE Express. The advert, published on Wednesday, February 29, features the Woolworths logo, Stanley’s photo, a message welcoming him as their new debtors manager as well as his contact details. Woolworths said in a statement that they did not place the advert. “Mr Stanley is not a Woolworths employee and he does not represent Woolworths in any capacity,” the statement read. “Various attempts by PE Express to contact Stanley tele-

phonically was unsuccessful. When dialling the number supplied in the advertisement, it sounds like the service has been disconnected,” said PE Express editor Bettie Giliomee. According to Giliomee the advert was paid for in cash. It was booked by a Ms. Fawzia Human, who in the cash account details gave Woolworths in Cape Town’s street address as well as their registration number. A local PE telephone number was supplied. “At the time of booking, the advertising representative did contact Human on the number supplied. Attempts to contact Human on Monday on this number was, however, unsuccessful,” said Giliomee. Junaine Stanley’s Facebook profile states he is a debtors clerk at Woolworths and Fawzia T. Human is his mother.

According to Capt. Janse van Rensburg, it is a big problem that many victims do not report these incidents since many insurance companies do not pay out in these instances. “It is important that the vehicles are brought in to Mount Road police station for finger printing, so that if a suspect is caught we can check if they can be linked to other cases,” said Janse van Rensburg. Mount Road is the only police station where finger printing can be done. They are also open from 8am to 1pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

Make sure that you hear the beeping sound or see the light that will indicate that the car is locked. Search on for Extreme Talent in Eastern Cape TALENTED dancers, singers, musicians and other performers are encouraged to enter the Extreme Talent competition which is currently holding auditions in Port Elizabeth. According to organiser Veruschka Barnard, the competition will run over a few months to find the best talent in PE. Entry is free and there is no age restriction. Several auditions will be held to find the Top 100. The first auditions were held in Moffett on Main Shopping Centre on February 11 with 13 out of the 77 participants chosen to go through to the Top 100. After the Top 100 a Top 50 will be selected and then the Top 30, who will be showcased to clients. The winner will walk away with R10 000 cash, clothing, products and equipment. The next auditions are scheduled for April 14 and May 5 between 9am and 11am at Profiles Health and Fitness Club in William Moffett Expressway. Alternative to filledtocapacity universities YOUNG people who are turned away from filled-to-capacity universities, as well as those who are still undecided about a career, can still enrol for further study this year. All they need do, is consider alternative study routes, says Natalie Rabson of Boston City Campus and Business College. “It is disturbing to see the news being dominated by reports of students queuing in vain for university admission,” comments Rabson. “It shows that thousands of young people are not aware of how tertiary education works, especially where the application and registration procedures are concerned. On the bright side, however, it shows that the South African youth is firmly committed to education – which is great news.” Instead of giving up hope, Rabson recommends that prospective students take some time to research their study options carefully. “From student comments quoted in the media, it seems that many young people are under the impression that there’s only one way to get a good qualification and that is through university,” she adds. “They also seem to think that the only way to get a degree is through full-time study at a university.” In reality, prospective students are spoilt for choice when it comes to the availability of courses of study and alternative routes to get a qualification that will ultimately take them to the career or job of their dreams. Rabson debunks some of the myths pertaining to post-school education: ) You are entitled to register at any tertiary institution and for any course of your choice despite your academic performance – in truth you are entitled to what you have successfully worked towards, what you have previously applied for and been accepted for, and all subject to availability. You need to work hard to meet the entry requirements of a course just as you need to pass Grade 7 before you can proceed to Grade 8.

That is just how it works. ) It’s difficult and expensive to get career guidance - this is only true if you consult a career counsellor in private practice. Most universities and colleges assist prospective students in choosing a field of study best suited to them. Boston City Campus and Business College offers a computerized career assessment and one-on-one career guidance to prospective students. Students are invited to do career research on the computer-based Career Compass programme at any of the college’s branches nationwide and then book an individual session with a trained career counsellor – all free of charge and with no obligation to register. ) Closing dates can be ignored or changed - not true as closing dates have to be adhered to so that education institutions can allocate classroom space, prepare study materials and so forth, much in the same way that you need to know how many friends will attend your birthday party so that you can cater adequately for them. But there are certain courses where there are no closing dates and you can register at any time. A career guidance professional can help you identify such courses; you can also consult the Boston City Campus and Business College brochure or website to see which courses are ‘registration any time’. ) A degree is the best qualification to have – this is a false perception. If you’re intending to become a medical doctor you need a degree, sure enough. But if you are passionate about counselling, and want to help people with HIV/Aids, you can for example enrol for the Boston HIV/Aids Counselling and Management course on NQF level 5. There are other similar examples, too many to mention; it’s best to consult a career counsellor. ) You can’t enrol for further study if you got ‘bad’ results in Matric - this is definitely not true. You may not meet the requirements for some courses but

9 there are many courses that are open even to those who did not get the results they wanted (perhaps only have Grade 11). You can study towards nationally – and even internationally – recognised diplomas and certificates that will enable you to secure good employment and build a career.

Heyman and her associate Hank Liebenberg are the driving force behind the Kouga Companion DVD marketing drive. This extensive private marketing campaign has to date seen a staggering 12 000 tourism DVD’s being distributed free of charge worldwide, which is as Liebenberg describes, “A perfect example of what a small group of dedicated people can achieve despite lack of funding and other minor obstacles.” The Eastern Cape Tourism Indaba will serve as a launch pad for the all new “KOUGA MY KOUGA” DVD documentary which was produced by local filmmakers Ultimate Cut Film Studio. The documentary contains never-before-

seen breathtaking footage of the Kouga region along with up-close high-definition footage of the indigenous fauna and flora. This documentary will be launched as part of the Kouga Companion DVD’s already extensive DVD menu, and will be made available to the public, free of charge for the duration of the event. The event will also receive extensive national coverage, including television, radio, print and online coverage. The proceeds of the event will go to further distribution of the Kouga Companion DVD, as well as see the development of tourist viewing stations, which are strategically placed interactive viewing stations whereby visitors can access everything they will ever need to know regarding the region they are visiting. In light of the 2012 Eastern Cape Tourism Indaba, African Red Productions will host a fundraising Gala Dinner at the newly-opened 7th Sense Restaurant on the evening of March 26. Book on history of prickly pears launched PROFESSOR William Beinart of the African Studies Centre at University of Oxford will give an illustrated talk at the launch of his book Prickly Pear: The Social History of a Plant in the Eastern Cape on Tuesday, March 27 at the Cuyler Manor Museum. The book, which he co-authored with Luvuyo Wotshela, is based on intensive archival research and on interviews and observations conducted in the Eastern Cape of how people in the area use and consume the plant. This is perhaps the first social history based around a plant in South Africa. Plants are not quite historical actors in their own right, but their properties and potential help to shape human history. This book explains why a wild and sometimes invasive cactus from Mexico, that found its way around the world over 200 years ago, remains important to African women in shacks and small towns. The launch starts at 6pm. The Cuyler Manor Museum, which was also the home of the Prickly Pear Festival from 1986 to 2007 are situated on the old PE to Uitenhage Road. This week the Property Poser panel clarifies a situation in which a reader is being threatened with early eviction due to outstanding rental payments. The tenant is two months in arrears but has offered to repay the money in instalments. However, the landlord is not satisfied with his offer and has demanded, via the rental agency, that the reader vacate the property within seven days. He has also threatened to lock the tenant out of the property and chain up the gates. In addition, the landlord demands a written undertaking that the arrear rental will be paid. What is clear is that the tenant is in breach of the lease agreement between himself and the landlord, says

Charlotte Vermaak from Chas Everitt in Port Elizabeth. “Depending on the exact terms of the agreement, the landlord would generally be able to put the tenant on terms to remedy the breach, failing which he can claim cancellation of the agreement and take steps to evict him, if the tenant does not vacate the premises on the termination date.” Vermaak says these rights are confirmed in the Rental Housing Act. “Section 4 sets out the landlord’s rights regarding prompt payment of rental and termination of lease ‘on grounds that do not constitute an unfair practice and are specified in the lease’.” The Consumer Protection Act may also have an impact on the steps that the landlord must take, if a fixed lease was concluded on or after 1

April last year, says Vermaak. “In that case, the landlord would only be entitled to cancel the lease after giving the reader 20 working days’ notice to remedy a material breach and he still fails to comply.” With regard to the tenant’s rights, the Rental Housing Act confirms that a reader may not be evicted without a court order, says Rian du Toit from DTS Attorneys in PE. “Also, a landlord may not change the locks unless it is necessary due to wear and tear or other reasonable causes, and without having given reasonable notice to the tenant. Duplicate keys must be provided.” Du Toit says this makes it clear that a landlord may not lock out a tenant – even one who is in arrears. “Based on the unfair practice of the landlord, the tenant may ap-

proach the Rental Housing Tribunal to seek relief,” says Du Toit. “Alternatively, the tenant may seek legal assistance from an attorney.” According to Du Toit, the Prevention of Illegal Eviction from and Unlawful Occupation of Land Act may provide some guidance in this matter. “The PIE Act, as it is commonly known, states that certain allegations must be made when requesting eviction and also prescribes the procedure to be followed when instituting eviction proceedings.” The landlord has the remedy of obtaining an eviction order from the court, says Du Toit, but this process demands that proper notice be given of the proposed eviction. “The relevant acts aim to prevent parties from taking the law into their own hands and acting unfairly, even in a situation where the tenant has breached the rental agreement.” To ask a property-related question, visit www.propertyposer.co.za.

START with a bang and end with a fizzle. After the weekend’s cracking Australian Grand Prix two things were made crystal clear – not only is the 2012 season far from over but there is no way that it’s going to lose its zest any time soon. Lewis Hamilton secured pole position with a brilliant lap on Sunday but was unable to replicate the same sort of form over the 58 lap race. Jenson Button swept into the lead of the Australian GP by turn one and never looked back. JB easily extended his advantage over the chasing pack and controlled the race masterfully from the front. He set an unbeatable pace and neither Vettel nor Hamilton had any real chance of taking the victory away from him. But it wouldn’t be Formula 1 is there wasn’t a twist or two. The stranded Caterham of Vitaly Petrov, on the main straight, put out the safety car for some at the most opportune time, for others not quite. Sebastian Vettel snatched second off Lewis Hamilton through the safetycar/pit-stop sequence though it was likely that the double world champ would’ve gotten one over the Brit without the intervention of the safety-car. Hamilton still managed to secure third but appeared completely dejected at the podium presentation and following press conference. It may not have been the result he wanted, or expected, but it was rather disappointing to see his downcast body language. The rest of the challengers had varying results; some solid, some utter disaster. Michael

Schumacher had looked impressive all weekend for the Mercedes team and backed it up with a fourth place on the starting grid. A decidedly more confident Schumacher was running solidly in third place when a gearbox issue brought an end to his race. Overall, the Mercedes seems to have more pace in qualifying than it does in the race. The amount of tyre degradation experienced by both Rosberg and Schumacher was a little higher than that of their closest rivals. From what appeared to be a position of strength after qualifying it turned calamitous in the race. As a mechanical issue ruled out Schumacher, Rosberg clunked the turn eleven curb a tad too hard, dropping him out of the points to twelfth position. In contrast, Ferrari’s woeful qualifying performance belied their race pace. Fernando Alonso was able to drag the Ferrari around the Albert Park circuit for the duration of the race and ultimately be rewarded with a decent fifth place. Felipe Massa ended up in the garage before the conclusion of the race after a coming together with Williams’s Bruno Senna caused terminal damage to his Ferrari. Pastor Maldonado looked set to score more points in one race than the struggling Williams team had scored through the entire 2011 season. It wasn’t to be as the Venezuelan binned it on the final lap of the grand prix. The Iceman is back! A mistake in qualifying did little to quell Kimi Raikkonen’s fire. The 2007 champion scythed his way past several cars and set a competitive pace throughout the race; including a pass on the final corner of the final lap of the race. His tyre management was impressive as he stretched the performance of the tyres over twenty lap stints, making the rubber last longer than the frontrunners. To all intents and purposes a first-time watcher would not have been able to discern that it was Raikkonen’s first F1 race in two years – in a nutshell, it’s like he’s never been away. Sunday morning brought one of the greatest feelings an F1 fan can experience; there is nothing like the start of a new season. Jenson Button brilliantly took his third victory down under and with it the lead of the 2012 world championship. Roll on Malaysia.

EC’s biggest r ad race hits PE THE Eastern Cape’s biggest road race, the SPAR Women’s 10km Challenge, is all set to hit the streets of Port Elizabeth on Saturday, May 5. The local event, which forms part of a five-race national Grand Prix series, attracted over 11 000 participants last year and organisers are anticipating a similar response in 2012. “The SPAR Women’s Challenge series is the biggest of its kind in the world,” said SPAR Eastern Cape marketing manager Martin Webber. “It’s also the country’s third largest athletics brand after Comrades and Two Oceans.” He said the race formed part of the retailer’s commitment to sport in the province, which included sponsorship of the Redhouse River Mile open-water swim and SPAR-NMMU Netball Club. Now in its 19th year, SPAR Eastern Cape’s flagship event includes both a 10km and 5km race, with total prize money exceeding R25 000.

For the elite athletes, the race also provides a chance to accumulate vital Grand Prix series points towards the overall prize of a Nissan Micra. Webber said entries had opened this week and that forms were available at all SPAR outlets and online. “The main event is open to women aged 15 and older while any person over the age of nine may enter the shorter distance. “It’s always great fun for the whole family and the best part is that it’s for a very worthy cause,” he said, referring to the event’s main beneficiary, the Yokhuselo Haven for victims of domestic violence. Webber said only female participants would be eligible for the big lucky draw prize of a year’s worth of groceries valued at R15 000. All finishers will receive medals, with t-shirts going to the first 11 000 entrants. There would be additional incentives for participating schools and businesses, said Webber. “The primary school and company with the most

entries each get R2 500, while the winning high school will receive a laptop from Core Technologies.” The event, which has been organised by Walmer Athletics Club since its inception, departs from the Kings Beach car park and organisers have instituted a two-hour cut-off time for each race. Both routes start on Beach Road and head towards Summerstrand, passing the Oceanarium before turning right into Second Avenue. The 5km runners turn left into Brighton Drive and loop back towards Kings Beach, while the 10km participants continue on to Erasmus Drive and the halfway mark at Admiralty Way. From there, they make their way back into Marine Drive for a straight run on the sea-side of the road towards the finish. Team Alpha Et Omega set for first Absa Cape Epic MANIE Maritz (48) and his daughter’s boyfriend, Wesley Augustyn (23), will be teaming up for this year’s Absa Cape Epic as team Alpha Et Omega with both participating for the first time in this gruelling event. The Untamed African Mountain Bike Race, now in its ninth year, will take place from 25 March to 1 April and will take riders over 781km with 16 300m of climbing on some of the Western Cape’s most unspoilt terrain. Augustyn, who owns an engineering and distribution company, says that he always wanted to participate in the race as it is one of the hardest mountain bike stage races in the world. Says Augustyn: “I’ve been very lucky to have met my girlfriend, as her dad also does mountain biking. He wanted to do the 2012 Absa Cape Epic for his 50th birthday and invited me to do it with him.” Maritz and Augustyn train together at least five times a week. “We have a training programme set out by Clinton Barrow (a professional road cyclist). My brother also helps us with the finer details, diet and training programme for the last six weeks,” says Augustyn.

Maritz and Augustyn started their training in October last year and put in a lot of long, slow rides to build a good base. They have faced a lot of setbacks in terms of work as well as Maritz having to undergo an eye operation at the end of November. Says Augustyn: “We’re on track now and still putting in long hours. We’ll start our strength training shortly.” When it comes to their diet, they eat a lot of kudu steaks and biltong. Maritz believes that the most important ingredient to complete the Absa Cape Epic successfully is a good training programme and a proper bike. According to Augustyn, the most important aspect is preparation – the balance is important as one would not want a tired body when going into the race. When asked what he thinks of the 2012 route, Maritz responds: “I think stage 3 is going to be a killer!” Augustyn also thinks that this year’s route will be extremely challenging, especially stage 3. “We’ll be taking the prologue easily, as well as the first two stages and push on stage 3 to get it done. After that we’ll just bite the bullet and pace ourselves through to the end,” says Augustyn. When asked what he does in his spare time, Maritz responds: “For the moment – ride, ride, ride. We en-

joy long rides in the Longmore Forest close to Port Elizabeth.” Maritz describes himself as an adventurous person who enjoys life. Besides training, Augustyn works, and attends evening classes at the university. He also enjoys spending time with his girlfriend and friends. “I would describe myself as a hard-working and outgoing person with a love of adventure,” he says. Augustyn is also riding the Sani2C with his girlfriend this year. He will be doing the student championships at the end of June where he would like to lead the NMMU MECER road cycling team to a good result. Apart from cycling, Augustyn would like to work hard to make a success of his new business this year. Maritz says that he would

The Splash Festival Beach and Water Sport programme kicks off with the Madiba Classic Surf Ski race which attracts some of the world’s best surf ski paddlers to Algoa Bay. Starting at 10am, the Madiba Classic consists of a two-lap course between Hobie Beach, Cape Recife and the Bell Buoy, a distance of approximately 26km. ORS FINALE Sunday sees the final round of the Weekend Post Ocean Racing Series for Season 7. Season 7 has consisted of 12 race days since October 2011 and has seen thousands of participants taking part in one of five separate events each race day. Having already attracted over 3 500 entries this season, the most popular event remains the Dis-Chem 1km Ocean Swim with 960 entries so far followed by the Kingfisher FM Kids 1km Beach Run/Walk with 853 entries and the Dis-Chem 2km – 3km Swim with 788. The Varsity College 5km Beach Run has attracted 760 entries with the Beach Walk attracting 177. Sunday’s Round 12 will be followed by a Series prize-giving function at News Cafe on the Boardwalk. The usual kids’ prize-giving for Round 12 will take place on the beach, followed by the Series’ Reach for a Dream presentation before proceedings move to the News Cafe for the 11.30am prize-giving and entertainment. The Overall Series winners in each of the discipline age categories will be announced at the prize-giving function with special medals to all winners. Overall Series trophies are up for grabs in the two swim disciplines, the Kids’ Beach Run and the Overall Beach Run Winner. Sport comes shining through

“NOT cricket, old chap,” is an upper-class British saying – crisply delivered with a disapproving frown – to denote something questionable or underhand. Happily, cricket last weekend triumphed in the best possible manner as Graeme Smith’s Proteas cruised to a 1-0 lead in the test series against New Zealand, and Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula said Cricket SA’s leadership should do the right thing and resign. Chief executive of the CSA, Gerald Majola, playing for time, had asked for a year’s leave of absence. But in what has become a pretty kettle of fish this was denied when the body he heads suspended him for one year, pending the outcome of a disciplinary hearing as recommended by the inquiry headed by former Judge Chris Nicholson – a move, no doubt, hit upon among the present CSA hierarchy to save a few more guilty skins. All this took place in rapid succession, following Judge Nicholson’s original call on the cricket body to “do the right thing.” His inquiry found that Majola was embroiled in a scandal in which R4.7 million was paid to himself and others in the illegal bonuses scandal following the Indian Premier League competition played in SA in 2009. Sports Minister Mbalula followed up the

commission’s findings with: “If the Board of Cricket South Africa has any moral compass it should do as the judge advises and resign.” Well, at least they got the job half-done. There remains the damning pronouncement by the Nicholson commission that the CSA leadership was guilty of “cover-ups” – and hopefully, for the good of South African cricket, the board eventually will be cleared of all who participated in the scandal. Ironically, CSA deputy president, AK Khan, who originally cleared Majola of any wrongdoing in his granting of a R1.8 million bonus to himself after the 2009 tournament, resigned immediately after the Nicholson commission’s findings were made known. At least the job is half-done. Hopefully for the good of cricket, it will yet be completed. Meanwhile, let’s leave it there and move on to pay tribute to the men of rugby, who did us proud last weekend on the rain-drenched turf of King’s Park, Durban, as the Sharks clawed their way back from a 17-0 deficit, to a fine 2722 Super Rugby defeat of last year’s champions, Queensland Reds. The victory came despite a yellow card for a tip-up tackle by rugged Willem Alberts, who otherwise was outstanding for the home team. It was a fine team effort – a victory marked overall by unremitting courage in which fiery hooker Bismarck du Plessis, and youngsters such as flanker Marcell Coetzee and lock Jandre Marais constantly caught the eye. Pat Lambie and his halfback partner, Charl McLeod, too, excelled. Not quite as dramatic, the Stormers at Newlands were full value for their 27-17 defeat of Auckland Blues, while on Sunday the Cheetahs pulled off a thrilling 33-26 victory over the Rebels in Melbourne while the hooter was still wailing. All this and then, against Bangladesh, the Little Master, Sachin Tendulkar’s 100th century in test and ODI cricket. What more could one ask of sport at its most sublime?

Hopewell Conservation Trail Run returns in April NIGHT trail running returns to the Hopewell Conservation Estate in April, with courses to suit everyone in the family. This follows the first-ever night trail run through a nature reserve, which attracted hundreds of runners in December last year. Being held on April 13, the Hopewell Trail Run is designed to add excitement to the road running calendar, according to organizer

Mike Zoetmulder of Zports. Courses include 15,5km and 5,5km individual runs, starting at 5.45pm. Children 14 years and younger can take part in a 3,5km Bush Run, which starts at 5.30pm. Entry forms are available from Brian Band Sports, Triangle Sport, and Action Cycles or online at www.trail-runs.co.za. Closing date for online entry is April 8. Late entries will be taken at the event. Spectators and entrants may be lucky enough to spot

eland calves, Cape mountain zebra, springbok and other animals while on the course. Braai fires will be available. Participants, supporters and spectators must bring their own food and drink, as none will be on sale at the venue. For more information, go to the trail website, www.trail-runs.co.za.
