EARLY 12 years ago he warned that the current stormwater system in the Lorraine area would collapse and cause major damage during heavy floods. In the middle of 2010 Ward 8 DA Councillor Gustav Rautenbach’s warnings were heeded and a brandnew stormwater pipeline was approved and installed along Macon Road in Lorraine. “That, however, was just the first phase. The problem will only be alleviated when the second phase is completed, but now there is apparently no budget for it,” said Rautenbach. The first phase cost about R3.5 million, and the second phase is estimated to cost around R11 million. But he has little hope that the second phase will be completed due to financial constraints. In the Metro Minutes publication it is stated that the “Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has an operational maintenance backlog of R1.4 billion. The bulk of the backlog, nearly R1.2 billion, is required by the Infrastructure and Engineering Directorate.” Rautenbach explained that the problem with stormwater drainage is not unique to the Lorraine area, and the reason for the problem with the city’s drainage system is that it wasn’t designed to keep up with the population explosion. “The maximum lifespan of these pipes is about 30 years. The more
houses that are being built, the more pressure is put on these old pipes, and without maintenance and or replacing these pipes, we will always have this problem of overflowing drains.” Currently there are four drains causing major problems with overflooding in Ward 8, i.e. Marne Avenue, Lyon Crescent, Tarn Avenue, and on the corner of Henry Gerber and Carstens Way. Water can be seen flowing out of the drain and down the street in Marne Avenue. The drain is so full of water that a sinkhole is starting to form next to the spilling drain. Rautenbach says when the city experiences heavy rains, the drains overflow so much that residents’ properties are damaged. “There is one resident who had a problem where both the storm water and sewage overflowed into her property. We still don’t know how that is even possible, because the stormwater and sewage have separate systems.” Municipal spokesperson Kupido Baron’s comment was that councillors should address such issues at a municipal forum. “They should discuss these issues in a council set-up,” he said. In response to the municipal comment, Rautenbach said that he had followed the correct procedure by contacting the relevant departments and also had site inspections done by various senior municipal officials. “I reported the overflowing drains in August and November last year and was told that the work had to be contracted out because the municipality didn’t have the right machinery.” (See photo on page 5.)

Changes at Compensation Fund lead to admin headaches

Private Sector steps in to offer assistance providing end-to-end injury on duty (IOD) processes, to step in and assist claimants. “As key players in the IOD industry, we welcome the fact that the Compensation Fund has decided to implement an electronic system, as literally millions of documents need to be captured each day. We also accept that any system migration has difficulties, but – as an industry – we need to put our heads together and find a way to address the current situation which is becoming unmanageable,” said Fritz Lüttich, managing director of CompSol. “Not a single medical account submitted to the Compensation Fund since October 2011 has been paid to medical service providers treating injured workers,” said Lüttich. Lüttich added that compensation payments to injured workers did commence on the new system, but

This situation has compelled CompSol, a company specialising in

was discontinued shortly afterwards due to a glitch in the system. “CompSol have undertaken to maintain their service standards to their medical service providers and employer clients who use their systems, thereby enabling both parties to receive payments due to them. CompSol is also in contact with the Compensation Fund to find a way for all stakeholders in the IOD industry to collaborate and overcome the current system glitches,” Lüttich said. CompSol will continue to engage with the Compensation Fund and offer their expertise to reduce the pressure. “In the meantime our priority and focus will be to assist our medical service providers, employers and employee clients to ensure that they go through the claiming process as easily as possible and receive compensation timeously,” said Luttich.

Donkey cart attack suspect out on bail BETTIE GILIOMEE THE man charged in connection with the attack on Lorna Poulter after an altercation over an overloaded donkey cart in Main Road, Walmer, just before Easter, was released on bail of R400 last week Thursday. The case against Xolile Ntantiso (26) has been postponed to June 4 for further investigation. Ntantiso will have to report twice a week at the Walmer Police station.
Poulter allegedly confronted a donkey cart driver on Tuesday April 3 at 10pm about the overloaded cart, when Ntantiso stopped at the scene. After an altercation he allegedly hit Poulter over the head with a vehicle antitheft device. Poulter, who was in a coma after the attack, was last week moved out of ICU into a general ward at Netcare Greenacres Hospital. According to Linda-Louise Swain of the Animal Anti-cruelty League, she can now receive visits from close friends and can sit up in a chair.

DA vra dat minister ingryp oor openbare vervoerstelsel Metro sê egter partye het eenstemmigheid bereik en stelsel is op koers HELGA VAN STAADEN DIE DA wil die minister van vervoer versoek om ondersoek in te stel oor hoekom die Nelson Mandelabaaimetropool se geïntegreerde openbare vervoerstelsel nog nie in werking is nie. Ian Ollis, DA-LP, het verlede week op ’n nuuskonferensie in Port Elizabeth gesê hy gaan S’bu Ndebele, die minister van vervoer, in die parlement vra om die ondersoek te begin. Hy het gesê dit is ’n skande dat die busse stof vergader. Die 25 busse is teen ’n koste van R100 miljoen aangekoop en meer as R250 miljoen is ook bestee aan die opknap van die padnetwerk. Dié vervoerstelsel moes reeds in 2010 in werking gestel word, maar het om verskeie redes nog nie van die grond af gekom nie. Kritieke vakante poste is onlangs vir die tweede keer geadverteer. Volgens Ollis moet Ndebele onder meer kyk na die redes vir die vertragings in die implementering van die vervoerstelsel, prosesse wat gevolg is met die aanstel van kontrakteurs en stappe wat geneem is om potensiële botsing van belange te vermy en watter regstellende stappe geneem sal word om die doeltreffende inwerkingstelling van die stelsel te verseker. Ollis beweer Zanoxolo Way-
ile, uitvoerende burgemeester van die metro, blokkeer die DA en die burgerlike groepe se pogings om inligting te verkry oor die redes vir die volgehoue vertragings in die implementering van die vervoerstelsel. Luidens ’n verslag vervat in die infrastruktuur en ingenieurswese-direktoraat se agenda wat onlangs ter tafel gelê is, is slegs 4% van die R200 miljoen-kapitaalbegroting vir die vervoerstelsel bestee, vier maande voor die einde van die boekjaar. Begrotingsaanpassings, wat nog nie goedgekeur is nie, toon dat R125 miljoen van die begroting na die volgende boekjaar oorgedra sal word. Luncedo Njezula, woordvoerder van die burgemeester, het gesê die munisipaliteit, verteenwoordigers van die taxibedryf en ’n verteenwoordiger van die DA, het vroeër verlede week ’n slypskool oor die vervoerstelsel bygewoon. Volgens hom was die slypskool suksesvol en gaan hulle die besonderhede hieroor Donderdag op ’n perskonferensie bekend maak. “Die proses vir die implementering van die vervoerstelsel is op koers. Ons het eenstemmigheid bereik,” het Njezula gesê. . Die Nelson Mandelabaaisakekamer pols intussen ook sy lede oor hul indrukke oor die munisipaliteit se geïntegreerde openbare vervoerstelsel. Die sakekamer het vroeër
verlede week ’n elektroniese meningsopname aan hul lede uitgestuur waarin agt vrae aan hulle gestel word. Van die vrae gaan oor hoe die konstruksietydperk van die vervoerstelsel ondernemings geraak het. Sakelui word ook gevra watter uitdagings die suksesvolle implementering van die vervoerstelsel verhoed. Dan word hulle ook gevra wat hulle dink die oplossings vir die probleem is. Samantha Venter, bedryfsdirekteur van die sakekamer, het gesê dit is belangrik om die impak te peil wat die geïntegreerde openbare vervoerstelsel reeds op sakelui gehad het. “Die sakekamer is gereeld in gesprek met sakelui, die munisipaliteit en die vervoersektor sedert die vervoerstelsel aan ons voorgestel is. Ons is bewus dat die konstruksie van die vervoerstelsel se infrastruktuur en die vertragings met die implementering daarvan op verskeie wyses ’n impak op ondernemings gehad het,” het Venter gesê. Sy het gesê die opname word gedoen om seker te maak dat die sakekamer die menings van sy lede en ander sakelui tydens sy gesprekvoering reflekteer. Volgens haar sal die uitslae van die meningsopname bekend gemaak word. Dit is nie duidelik wat die sperdatum vir die voltooiing van die meningsopname is nie.

Fun day at Chatty school FORMER pupils of Chatty Senior Secondary School in Bloemendal are spearheading a community project this long weekend to uplift the morale of current teachers and learners. A reunion ball will be held on Friday at the Old Grey Sportsclub in Mount Croix with a performance by Gino Lee. All proceeds will benefit the school. On Saturday there will be a fun day, starting at 9am, with a band and drum majorettes marching through the streets of
Bloemendal to the school. The formal opening of the fun day will be at 10am. There willl be a fun-filled entertainment competition amongst learners of Chatty SSS with PE’s finest, Earl and Agemi, as judges, who will also be performing. There will also be a Mr Chatty competition. The events trucks of Sasko and Coke, as well as various stalls, will add some more flavour to the day. There will also be fun games such as sakresies, toutrek, dominos and darts.

Kingfisher Teen Mr & Miss PE crowned BETTIE GILIOMEE YOUTH ambassadors of the Nelson Mandela Bay were selected recently at the Kingfisher FM Teen Mr and Miss PE 2012 pageant. The event was hosted by RoleModels SA at King’s Court in the Galleria. Over 400 guests attended the event, including the Metro’s Executive Mayor Wayile Zanoxolo. The beneficiary of the pageant is the The Imfundo Project aimed at uplifting the
community of Malabar Ext 6. According to Juanita Smit, of RoleModels, the highlight of the evening was when all 75 contestants and singer *Andries-Hendrik Potgieter came on stage and sang a hearttouching song, about having a world where children have no pain or sorrow to 20 children of Malabar Ext 6 who were special guests of the pageant. “The finalists and their parents had to dress the underprivileged young guests smartly for the gala event,” said Smit. The Imfundo Project is a project of Rolem-
odels Foundation, an NPO. Imfundo’s focus is to ensure school readiness, through building pre-schools for children aged between 3 and 7 years and to support learners aged between 8 and 18 in an after school centre. THE ABay Wheelchair Wednesday initiative which takes place in the Nelson Mandela Bay during the month of May will raise funds for the APD Day Care Centre in Motherwell where they tend to 29 children with disabilities between the ages of 1 and 7 years.

The APD Day Care and Stimulation Centre for Children with Disabilities was established in June 2006 from humble beginnings as a subprogram of APD Nelson Mandela Bay’s existing program for children with disabilities. In 2007, APD secured premises in KwaZakhele and started with six children. The demand for this service grew to the extent that they needed more space and during 2007 they moved into a room kindly offered by the JB Vusi Methodist Church in Kwazakhele. In February 2008, the APD Daycare Centre moved to their existing premises in Motherwell. This move provided more space to implement rehabilitation and stimulation programs. The attendance and demand grew from 10 to 39 children. A social worker was employed. This enabled them to become more involved in the lives of the children’s families. The children are transported to and from their homes in a specially-adapted bus. With
their wheelchair program, they were able to provide much-needed assistive devices. Missionary students completed murals on some of the walls to enhance and improve the look of the daycare centre. This created a friendly and stimulating environment for the children. The increased number of children has resulted in the situation that they need to run two trips, resulting in some of the children being able to spend less time at the centre. As a result there is a need for another bus and driver. All the children, for whom the parents/caregivers receive a grant, are from impoverished families in the townships. From their on-site kitchen, APD have, with the assistance of a professional dietician, been able to ensure that the children receive two balanced meals a day. Other services provided via the APD Daycare Centre facility include:: • Provision of the necessary therapeutic exercises for the children enrolled at the centre. • Ongoing training for the staff and volunteers in the stimulation and care of the children in their care. • Ongoing training of mothers and caregivers to continue with the stimulation and care of the children at home. • Availability of rehabilitation services for children with the disabilities in the
townships who are enrolled at the Daycare Centre. • Referrals to other specialist services/assessment to special schools are done through this service. • Minimizing the risk of neglect and deprivation of these vulnerable children. • The service itself is an inter-disciplinary one and is staffed by a social worker, physiotherapists and occupational therapists. Looking ahead, it is the APD Daycare Centre’s hope that they might well be subsidized by Department of Social Development. The roll-out program includes extending this service to other areas within Nelson Mandela Bay; namely Uitenhage, KwaZakhele, Walmer and the Northern areas. A recent achievement worth mentioning is the fact that in February 2011, 2 of the children underwent operations at Livingstone Hospital. Due to the fact that their hamstrings were too short, they could only crawl. Their hamstrings were lengthened. Both children now walk with the aid of a walker. The APD Daycare Centre Staff are hopeful that she will soon be able to walk without any assistance. Managing the daycare centre is an expensive operation. The average monthly cost of sustaining the facility is R45 000. They do not receive any assistance from the government.

Jayson King pays tribute to Santana JAYSON King will be paying tribute to iconic Latin guitarist, Carlos Santana, on Saturday, May 5, at The Boardwalk. Santana, who first received recognition at the Woodstock Festival in the USA during the 60’s, became known as a Latin cult figure with his special brand of musicality, with his band Santana Bros. “With a variety of percussion instruments, keyboard, drums and guitar, Santana’s sound will be recreated live on The Boardwalk Vodacom Amphitheatre stage,” said King. He will be joined on stage by Cape Town virtuoso guitarist, Mickey Rorich, and other members of the Latin Kings band. Rorich, who has performed with the late great Oscar Petersen at the Blue Note Nite Club in New York, will feature as one of two lead guitarists in the tribute show, together with Nazneem Brown. The members of the band include Bernie Damons (keyboards), Bently Brown (bass), Nigel Kruger (percussion), Philip Dodgen (lead vocals) and Bjorn Petersen (drums). PE is in for a treat as there will be two shows, one on May 25 and another the following night on May 26. The ever popular comedian, Ashley Pienaar, will be accompanying Emo on this tour. Pienaar is known for his very own show, Ashley Pienaar is Kroes, which he staged in the Bay recently. Andries Vermeulen, a fresh new young artist, will also join the ensemble. Dealing with a child’s school phobia CHILD MATTERS by Dr Crystal Watson
of the day; causing further stress and making them feel very vulnerable. For older children who are not new to the school who have had a long summer break or have had time off because of illness, returning to school can be quite traumatic.
Possible triggers for school phobia include: MANY children at some time in their school career are challenged by anxiety and fear about attending school. School phobia, a complex and extreme form of anxiety about going to school (but not of the school itself as the name suggests), can have many causes and can include related anxiety disorders such as agoraphobia (fear of being in public places) and selective mutism. Symptoms include stomach-aches, nausea, fatigue, shaking, a racing heart and frequent trips to the toilet. Young children (up to the age of 7 or 8 years) with school phobia, experience separation anxiety and cannot easily contemplate being parted from their main carer, whereas older children (8 plus) are more likely to have it take the form of social phobia where they are anxious about their performance in school (such as in games or in having to read aloud or answer questions in class). Children with anxieties about going to school may suffer a panic attack if forced, which then makes them fear having another panic attack and there is an increasing spiral of worry with which parents often do not know how to deal.
How does a school phobia start? Going to school for the first time is a period of great anxiety for very young children. Many will be separated from their parents for the first time, or will be separated all day for the first time. This sudden change can make them anxious and they may suffer from separation anxiety. They are also probably not used to having the entire day organized for them and may be very tired by the end
• Being bullied • Starting school for the first time • Moving to a new area and/or changing schools and make new friends • Being off school for a long time through illness or because of a holiday • Bereavement (of a person or pet) • Feeling threatened by the arrival of a baby • Having a traumatic experience such as being abused, being raped, having witnessed a tragic event • Problems at home such as a member of the family being very ill • Problems at home such as marital rows, separation and divorce • Violence in the home or any kind of abuse, of the child or of another parent • Not having good friends (or any friends at all) • Being unpopular, being chosen last for teams and feeling a physical failure (in games and sport) • Feeling an academic failure • Feeling panic attacks when travelling to school or while in school
What can parents do? • Have a physician examine the child to determine if he or she has a legitimate illness. • Listen to the child talk about school to detect any clues as to why he or she does not want to go. • Talk to the child’s teacher, school psychologist, and/or school counsellor to share concerns. • Together determine a possible cause or causes for school avoidance. • Develop an appropriate plan of action to modify the school and home environments to help the child adjust to school.
Stalls and talent show at Mzansi Magic Market Day M-Net’s Mzansi Magic Market Day 2012 for young entrepreneurs is taking place at a brandnew venue, the Walmer Park Shopping Centre, when it is held on Saturday, September 1. Free craft workshops, as well as auditions for the talent show, will be held in the run-up to the market day. The free craft workshops, which are limited to 40 children per workshop, will be held on Saturday, July 28 and August 4 from 2pm to 4pm at the Walmer Park Shopping Centre’s centre

Lorraine Primary supports blood donation LORRAINE Primary School assisted the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) to recruit 381 blood donors during March 2012. This forms part of the annual Adopt-a-Month programme that has been running at this school for the past six years. Grade 4 teacher Letella du Toit’s class was announced as overall winners for achieving 50% class participation, which was the highest in the school, and for recruiting 33 blood donors in total. Tiaan Smith in Grade 5 was the individual winner for recruiting 21 people to donate blood during March 2012. Bertram Sekondêre Skool groet skoolhoof ná 33 jaar ALVENÉ APPOLLIS DIE Bertram Sekondêre Skool in Bloemendal het onlangs afskeid geneem van Fred Matthews, wie 33 jaar lank die skoolhoof was. Matthews het uit die onderwys getree om voltyds sy beroep as predikant vol te staan. Hy is onlangs as predikant by die Weis Memorialkerk in Schauderville aangestel. “’n Mens het maar gemengde gevoelens. Aan die een kant is ek hartseer omdat ek een fase afsluit, maar ek is ook opgewonde omdat nuwe uitdagings begin,” het Matthews gesê. Hy het vir etlike jare in albei beroepe gedien en nou sien hy daarna
uit om soggens op te staan en homself toe te wy aan sy beroep as predikant. Oor die onderwys sê hy dat dit ’n voortdurende proses is wat nooit ophou nie. “Enige skool is ’n mikrokosmos van sy gemeenskap. Dis amper soos om op die horison te loop en nes jy dink jy kom aan die einde, is daar nog ’n horison,” sê hy. “Sodra jy dink dat jou take afgehandel is, steek ’n volgende paar take hul kop uit.” Sy grootste bekommernis vir dié wat hy agterlaat, is dat die dwelmprobleem in skole al erger word. Hy maan egter dat ’n mens nie heeltemal negatief moet word oor die uitdagings wat die onderwysstelsel in die gesig staar nie. “Daar is gewoonlik 95% goeie leerders met goeie waardes en ideale. Die
‘ander’ 5% is in die minderheid en ’n mens moet nie dat húlle jou uitkyk op die professie negatief raak nie.” Volgens Matthews is die gemeenskaplike faktor tussen predikant wees en onderwys gee die bediening van die gemeenskap. Hy sê dat sy uittrede nie beteken dat hy nie meer met kinders en jongmense in die gemeenskap sal werk nie, maar slegs dat hy dit vanuit één beroepsveld sal doen in plaas van twee beroepe, soos in die verlede. Sy nuwe werk het ook teweeg gebring dat hy en sy gesin ná baie jare in hul woning in Palmridge moes verhuis na die pastoriehuis op die hoek van Highfield- en Fountainweg in Schauderville. “Maar ’n verandering in omgewing kan mens ook vreeslik goed doen,” sê Matthews.
Alhoewel hy uitsien na sy nuwe uitdagings, sal hy sy kollegas en die waardevolle verhoudings wat hy oor die jare heen gebou het, mis. Aan dié wat hy in die personeelkamer van Bertram agterlaat, sê hy dat hulle elke dag net ’n bietjie op ’n slag moet aanpak en baie geloof moet hê. Sy groetwoorde aan die leerders van die skool is: “Aanhou, aanhou, aanhou. If you want to use a strong colour, use it in small areas, as punctuation, so if necessary it can be easily changed. 4. Period and older-style homes are hard to cost-control • Best get a fixed price from a builder. 5. Think how you can maximize space or the sense of space. • No matter how much space you have, you are likely to want more. Prioritize your space requirements for each room. • The fewer the corners, lines and intersecting surfaces, the greater the visual flow and the more pleasing and less expensive it will be. • Try to keep as much of the floor visible by raising cupboards off it. 6. Give great consideration to the front exterior. The exterior presents the first statement about you and your home. 7. A higher ceiling looks better. The following are some general tips that may help to make the process a little easier for you.
PREPARATION The renovation will be dirty, dusty and noisy. Keep neighbours on your side. This is an impossible task but do what you can by informing them of noise and inconvenience.
DESIGN AND STYLE 1. Keep renovations in character Consider the architectural integrity of your building. Design: The general layout and design of the fixer-upper home needs to work. Moving walls or rectifying a home that has been designed badly can be very expensive. The layout of the home should flow and be practical. 4. Condition: It is important to consider the overall condition of the home to decide whether the renovations are manageable or require major changes. If too much needs to be done to make the house liveable, it may be worthwhile looking elsewhere. Aesthetic improvements are typically less costly and take less time than other modifications.

This week a buyer tells us that the transfer of his property is still in progress but substantial leaks in the roof have been discovered. When the reader reported it, the estate agent obtained quotations for the repairs and a claim was instituted with the relevant insurer. It has subsequently transpired that the insurer will not cover the claim and it also appears that the seller will not accept the quotations. As we have mentioned before, in order to find a solution, one has to distinguish between latent and patent defects, says Charlotte Vermaak from Chas Everitt in Port Elizabeth. “A patent defect is something that is, or should be, identifiable upon inspection of the property in a reasonable manner. Examples include wall cracks, broken windows, missing tiles and so on.” A latent defect on the other hand is not apparent during an ordinary inspection by a reasonable buyer, says Vermaak. “It includes faults

He could possibly even seek to cancel the contract, if he can show that he would not have bought the property had he known about the defect.”

Mountain bike and trail challenge WATER SPORTS WORLD BY MICHAEL ZOETMULDER ONE of the more diverse and exciting Mountain Bike and Trail runs in the Eastern Cape will be taking place on Saturday 5th May within the Alexandria Forest region. The Woody Cape MTB and Trail Challenge is an exciting event for off-road athletes with four simultaneously running events on offer. A tough 55km Mountain Bike Event will be paired with an equally exciting but somewhat less strenuous 18km version, whilst for the trail running enthusiasts organisers Zports have mapped out a spectacular 18km trail run and 5km fun run version. All events will start and finish at the breathtaking Elephants of Eden, an elephant Sanctuary situated in the heart of the Alexandria forest belt. The farm, owned by Ian and Lisette Withers of the Knysna Elephant Park, is home to over halfa-dozen African Elephants and other game. “We are very excited about this event which we believe is one of the most diverse off-road events in the Province,” said event organiser, Mike Zoet-
mulder of Zports. “Participants will be challenged with a variety of terrains and gradients which will be offset by breathtaking views of the largest dune fields south of the equator, indigenous forest, farm lands and a variety of game.” Other than Elephants of Eden, participants will also pass through neighbouring Kaba Game farm which is home to the International Quest Africa leadership school and a variety of game including giraffe and buffalo. From Kaba, participants will tackle a 23km section of the Addo Elephant National Park, the third largest national park in the country, where the Woody Cape region consists of pristine indigenous forest. “Due to the nature of the events on offer, we will not be taking any late entries for the Mountain Bike and 18km Trail Run events after our online entries close on Thursday May 3,” added Zoetmulder. “This is definitely not an experience which off-roaders will want to miss as it’s not something which they’re able to do on their own.” The event is held in association with the local Alexandria NG Kerk fete which takes place in Alexandria on the Saturday morning, with proceeds of the event going towards the church’s community projects. By the time you read this, the much-admired Bulls stalwart may already have made his decision. The column hopes it’s not a “Yes” for that will only serve to underline the sometimes invasive negativity from which SA rugby suffers. We have a new coach; our rugby is moving into a new era: the four-yearly cycle that separates the 2011 World Cup from the next Cup tournament in England in 2015. So why not start anew? For that’s when internationally the true greatness of SA rugby will once more be tested – and fresh blood will be needed. Matfield certainly will not be around then to help the Springbok cause. On the other hand he could by then be of great worth as a special adviser as a lineout and general forward special adviser to team management in Meyer’s attempt to regain the coveted Webb Ellis Cup. What has Matfield to gain by this comeback? Precious little. There’s little enough time to ready himself for battle, and there’s always the possibility the move might not turn out well. He may not be the potent force he once was. In which case his legacy – and that of the Springboks – will suffer. Meyer, understandably, is anxious
to make an impressive start to his long-awaited appointment as national coach. But he needs to be positive; needs to look to the future, not backwards into the past. He needs to show faith in the young players around him, eager to build for themselves new reputations of greatness. They are there, in abundance. Go for it, Victor. If you have already made up your mind and it is to try to revitalise the body and spirit that made you so great, all who care about Springbok rugby will wish you well. They will watch in trepidation, hoping for the best. If you say – or have already said – “Nay”, they will understand and believe you have chosen wisely. Battle royal in Bahrain TALKING F1 BY NATALIE LE CLUE JUST 7 days ago the F1 world was in agreement that the Chinese GP was as majestic as it could probably get. Yet somehow the Bahrain GP has managed to usurp that and deliver a battle royale that thrilled from lap 1 to 57. The fourth round of the season always held the promise of the first true reflection of 2012’s pecking order. For a better part of the weekend McLaren and Red Bull consistently ruled the timing sheets and it appeared that it would be a straight fight between these two teams come Sunday. Saturday qualifying proved the most closely contested of the season so far with the top four drivers separated by a mere one-and-a-half tenths. It was Sebastian Vettel who struck a decisive blow with his first pole of the season and 31st overall. Lewis Hamilton and Mark Webber rounded out the top three while the potential dark-horse, Raikkonen, opted to save his tyres and qualified eleventh overall. Daniel Ricciardo completed his best-ever qualifying session with a great sixth place on the grid. For the first part of the season the McLaren of Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton was the car with the best pace and crucially the car that seemed to work in all conditions. Red Bull, however, had been steadily finding their way back to the sharp-end. The most important thing to note from Red Bull’s perspective is that the RB8 was always there or there about on race pace. In 2012, it had just taken a while to unlock it. If ever anyone can make it count from pole positions it is Sebastian Vettel. The double world champion led easily away from the start as the pack squabbled behind him. The fast starting pair, Grosjean and Raikkonen, found themselves running in fourth and seventh by the end of the first lap. It didn’t take long for the Lotus drivers to unleash their pace as Grosjean made short work of first Webber and later Lewis Hamilton to get into second on the track. Meanwhile Raikkonen scythed past every car in sight, including
Button, Alonso and Hamilton, to be running third by lap twenty and by the first round of pitstops had passed his teammate for second. By this point in the race Vettel had carved a lead of six odd seconds but it was by no means a stroll for the 2011 champ. A relentless Raikkonen got the gap down to less than a second and had one good look into turn one for the race lead. It wasn’t to be though, as Vettel maintained a three-second gap until the chequered flag drop-ped. It isn’t often that Vettel has been pushed when he’s found himself leading a race and he certainly knew he was in a race for everyone of the 57 laps. Raikkonen was by far the best driver of the day. Victory was well within his sights but it wasn’t to be. While many were left wondering why the Lotus pitwall did not instruct Grosjean to allow his teammate through, Raikkonen called those who criticised this decision to order. “There are no team orders and I tried to get past as quickly as I could, but it’s not easy because we have two similar cars,” said Raikkonen. Good for the Finn for not wanting any hand-outs; again it establishes the true racer that Raikkonen is. After starting eleventh he brilliantly fought his way into a position to win the race and he did so using his mega speed, ending second completely on merit. As these two champs ignited the Sakhir circuit, it turned into a day to forget for the McLaren boys. Problems in two of Hamilton’s three pitstops dropped him out of contention early on. He did manage to salvage four points with an eighth place finish. Jenson Button was fighting for fifth place when a left-rear puncture forced him into a late pitstop and just two laps later he pulled the Macca into the garage with a sick sounding engine. Mr Consistency Mark Webber brought home another fourth place ahead of last week’s winner Rosberg and the two-stopping Paul Di Resta. Fernando Alonso again outperformed his equipment for seventh while Hamilton, Massa and Schumacher rounded out the points. Red Bull’s first win of the season makes it four different winners in all four 2012 races and more cruciallyputsVettelintheleadofthedrivers’championship. Seems Red Bull have found their wings.

Hobie 16 Nationals bring more watersport fun to the Bay PORT Elizabeth is steadily laying claim to the title of the “Watersport Capital” as one more event is added to a packed April 2012. The Boardwalk Hobie 16 Nationals will join the Weekend Post Ocean Racing Series, Splash Festival and the Specsavers Ironman as premier events, showcasing Port Elizabeth as an excellent watersport venue. The Boardwalk Hobie 16 Sailing Nationals will be sailed off Hobie Beach, which was named for the Hobie catamarans, from April 27 to 30. “We are extremely excited to be a part of this
water sport and foresee a fantastic weekend,” said Clifford Ngakane, General Manager of the Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment Centre. Sailing teams consisting of a skipper and one crew member will sail in identical boats on courses laid just off of Shark Rock Pier, making for a close and exciting spectacle. The Algoa Bay Yacht Club will be providing on and off water support during the Nationals. The racing will be conducted by Race Officer, Ronnie Baer, who will be supported by a crew that cut its teeth on the Hobie 16 Worlds held during 2005 on Hobie Beach, Port Elizabeth.
