Illegal dumping a health hazard

LACK of monitoring of public open spaces that are used as illegal dumping sites by residents is a huge problem facing Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, according to Wandile Junundu of the South African National NGO Coalition (SANGOCO). According to Junundu, illegal dumping is taking place especially in the Zwide area from Van der Kemp Street towards the Dan Qeqe Stadium. And this, he said, is a grave concern and embarrassment for residents who want to live in a healthy, clean and environmentally-friendly city. After investigating the situation, Junundu discovered that the municipality was collecting waste fortnightly in the area by employing a service provider, while residents, spaza shops and taverns operating in the area and contractors continued to dump building rubble waste everyday. Children play with the waste which also creates a breeding ground for rats and causes a stench. “This makes the area filthy and a health hazard,” argues Junundu who complained that there was “no communication strategy from the municipality and the residents concerned on the matter.” The municipal workers, he added, use their own schedule and pick-up points without consultation or communication with residents. Municipal spokesperson Kupido Baron said the municipality is continuously monitoring and clearing illegal dumping. Residents, however, according to Baron, continually dump illegally. Baron admitted that spaza shops and house shops are certainly part of the problem. “If residents can provide any information with regard to the culprits then the municipality will prosecute them,” said Baron, adding that his municipality is responsible for rendering of waste collection services in the said area.

Lonwabo Tsotsobe’s will always return home for his mom’s cooking RIAAN MARAIS “Every day is an opportunity to start over . . . to get clarity so that you can live out your vision” These words are written in bold on a photo of the Proteas cricketer Lonwabo Tsotsobe above the diningroom table in his parents’ home. According to his mom, Dorothy, her son lives true to these words. “He sees every match as an opportunity to prove himself, and I get nervous every time because I want him to succeed. With every ball I hope that he takes a wicket.” As any proud mother would be, she is always very excited about her son’s achievements, especially now that this son of Port Elizabeth is third on the International Cricket Coun-
cil’s rating of top one-day bowlers. “He was so excited when he heard the news,” said his mother in their Bluewater Bay home, “and shortly thereafter he heard that he took 50 wickets for the Proteas in the least amount of time.” Sporting talent definitely runs in the Tsotsobe veins. Every member of this family has achieved in sport at a high level. His older brother, Langa, plays for one of PE’s top rugby clubs, while his older sister, Nomsebenzi, is a former captain of the women’s Springbok rugby team. His late father, Toto, was a member of the former Leopards (the international rugby team for nonwhite players) who played against teams such as the British Lions and the All Blacks. His mother was member of a group
who started women’s rugby in Port Elizabeth and she works for Cheeky Watson, president of the EP Rugby Union. “Lopsy took park in karate at school and he was mad about tennis, but cricket was always his favourite sport.” She laughs with joy remembering how he always boasted with his wickets, even though it was while playing in the street with a rubbish bin for wickets and planks for bats. “And now he plays all over the world, always on the road or overseas.” And she knows how to keep her son happy when he is home for a change. “I only have to cook a saucy stew or put chicken in the oven. He will always come home for his mother’s good food.”

Edcon helps community to fight crime NCEBA DLADLA CRIME fighting initiatives in the Kwazakhele Police Station precinct in Port Elizabeth have received a boost following the handover of a state-of-the-art mini-mobile police station by the clothing and textiles retailer, the Edcon Group, in a ceremony held in Njoli Square on Friday, January 20. The trailer, which is aimed at improving police visibility and service delivery in crime hotspots as well as strengthening relations between the police and communities, comes equipped according to police specifications. It is manned by two police officers and has resources to take statements and act as an information centre.
Above all, this R80 000 unit, one of the 20 “hot dog stands” that the Edcon Group has given out in the country as an investment of over R1 million to fight against crime since 2006, according to Edcon Coordina-

tor, Samantha Hartshorne. “While the purpose is to involve the community in the role of policing, this enhanced contact with the community will continue to provide direct assistance in the reduc-
tion of the fear of crime,” said Hartshorne. “We are proud to be associated with such a vital and important initiative. As a company committed to empowering communities the trailers will serve the communities within the Edcon trading areas and improve the safety of residents,” said Edcon Group’s Transformation Manager, Laverne Leibrand. He added that they feel privileged to be able to put their weight behind a project that is having such a positive impact in communities – where more and more residents are determined to take back their power. Port Elizabeth’s KwaZakhele became the first region in the Eastern Cape to receive the SAPS trailer following Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Polokwane and Cape Town.
Col. Kushi Nair of Visible Policing takes a complaint from a resident of KwaZa khele, demonstrating how the trailers bring service to the community.

THE budget for bush clearing and grass cutting has been slashed from R3.2 million to zero. This is according to DA Ward 2 Councillor, Dean Biddulph, who is putting his full weight behind the fight of the Parks Department in order to have their original budget, or at least a portion of it, reinstated. The first budget cut, cutting down the ability of the Parks Department to tend to this basic service delivery, was implemented at the end of 2009 in order to help limit the level of expenditure by the municipality. “Now, things have taken a turn for the worse. Not only has the budget for bush clearing and grass cutting been reduced, but it has been totally taken away,. The little money that there was for this purpose, has already been spent in the current financial year,” said Biddulph. “I have already been in contact with the Chief Financial Officer of the Metro, Kevin Jacoby, to urgently look at the budget of the Parks Department. The only ‘good’ news I have received to date, is that I did not receive an immediate “No” from Jacoby.” DA Ward 8 Councillor, Gustav Rautenbach, is also at his wits end when it comes
to bush clearing and grass cutting in his ward. “I am sitting with various letters from residents complaining about overgrown erven and long grass that need to be taken care of. When these requests are sent to the relevant municipal department, the answer is always the same: the budget for bush clearing and grass cutting is completely depleted,” said Rautenbach. “According to the municipality, these services will resume once money is available again, but I am telling you now, the backlog is so long that they will never be able to address the backlog effectively.” Further problems faced by the Parks Department are a critical shortage of staff, as they only have two staff members that must serve the whole Metro, as well as a lack of equipment. According to Biddulph, some grass cutting and bush clearing will still take place, but it will be assessed on the gravity of the problem. “The Metro will still have priority areas such as the beachfront, but planned grass cutting will take place further and further apart.” Despite several attempts, no comment could be obtained from municipal spokesperson, Kupido Baron. Biddulph will also present the matter at the next council meeting.
CAPE Town Child Welfare is looking for Thandika Reshe, Harrison Mavikela and Amina Reshe in regards to the child, Memihle Reshe, 31 months old. If you know of their whereabouts or have any other contact information, please contact Bianca Mechnig at 0 021 638 3127.

The support we have received from the public is encouraging to us and I can assure you that we will not give up, we will continue to strive towards a better tomorrow for our school pupils and to ultimately increase this region’s pass rate,” said Mayor Wayile.

A PORT Elizabeth school is a leader in the war against unemployment and hunger that is ravaging communities in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. Seyisi Primary School, in Kwazakhele recently received seedlings from the Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform to plant a garden and produce food that is needed to nourish the bodies and minds of not only the children of the school, but also members of the community who are largely unemployed and solely dependant on social grants for a living. This came about due to the efforts of Nomonde Ntsundwana, a teacher at the school and a SanParks’s Kudu Award winner and ambassador of the orange flesh sweet potato which is known for being a source of nutrients that are needed to help the body grow. Nomonde, who won the award in 2010 whilst she was a teacher at Canzibe Primary School in Motherwell, is the goose that lays the golden egg, according to the school principal, Xoliswa Zikishe. She was redeployed to Seyisi Primary. “Nomonde is a hard worker and a dedicated teacher who cares about the poor members of the community. She was brought to our school – whose children come from poverty-stricken families – for a reason,” said Zikishe proudly. “When I won the Kudu award - I made a vow that I would encourage other schools and the surrounding communi-

Walmer township boxing revival on the cards NCEBA DLADLA THE revival of boxing in the Walmer Township has taken a positive turn, thanks to the donation of boxing equipment by the head of Andile Boxing Promotions, Andile Siqwepu, at the weekend.
Nelson Mandela Bay Ward Councillor Nomajama Benya (left) and Walmer High School principal Lunga Dyani receive some of the boxing equipment from Andile Boxing Promotions (ABP) head Andile Siqwepu and Mandela Bay BSA boss Mthunzi Mapitiza and ABP Chairman and former rugby great Archie Mkele who was born and bred in Walmer township. Siqwepu presented a boxing development tournament featuring a vacant Eastern Cape Junior Middleweight title fight between East London’s Malibongwe Ndzube and Mthatha’s Phumlani Ntlebi at the Walmer High School Hall on Saturday. Ndzube won the title on a fifth round TKO. This was after 18 years that Walmer Township community last saw a live boxing match despite the area boasting with both amateur and promising professional fighters. Siqwepu, assisted by Nelson Mandela Bay Boxing South Africa (BSA) boss Mthunzi Mapitiza, presented Walmer High School principal Lunga Dyani with boxing equipment such as gloves, mitts, pads, headgear, protectors and punching-bags, to help develop boxing in the area. “I received this equipment from former Sports Minister Makhenkesi Stofile to revive boxing in Mandela Bay and I am using some at my gym
but will be donating the rest to other gyms and schools around the metro,” said Siqwepu. According to Siqwepu, Walmer High School was the third recipient following Loyiso High and Sithembile Primary Schools in Zwide township. Ward Councillor Nomajama Benya welcomed the gesture and promised to keep a watchful eye on the equipment - to make sure that it is used for its purpose - to develop boxing in the area. “Through this boxing equipment, we hope knives and guns and booze will be the thing of the past as our youth will be concentrating on building themselves through boxing. We thank you Mr Siwepu and Mr Mapitiza for thinking about us in your development initiatives,” said Cllr. Benya. Other results of the tournament are: Lusindiso Siyo stopped Melumzi Jantjies TKO 1 (flyweight); Anelisa Gungqisa won KO1 Hlanga Kantsi (Jnr. lightweight); Simo Mbande beat Mthuthuzeli Funde on points (Jnr. featherweight); Siyabonga Blou won TKO 1 Thando Mahlahla (flyweight); Mzoxolo Dyani won KO2 Milile Baskiti (featherweight); and Lonwabo Roboshi won TKO 1 Ndikho Magadaza (Mini-flyweight division).
Tigers President overwhelmed by community members’ contribution SELBY MADIKANE BONTLE Tigers Ladies Rugby Football Club president Nomathemba Gum was overwhelmed by Walmer Community coaches for their contribution in introducing rugby to her players. According to Nomathemba, her players have never played the game of rugby before, but every player is now acquiring basic rugby skills. Nomathemba thanked coaches Mnontsi Maliehe, a full-time NMMU student, and Bonakele Bethe for introducing rugby to the girls. “The names of my coaches, Khusta Sajini (from Walmer Wales) and
Mongezi Cilwana, are worth mentioning as they work very hard towards the upliftment of the community,” said Nomathemba. The EPRU and African Bombers RFC ladies’ coach, Mkhuseli Songwiqi, are also assisting the Tigers. “I want to thank coach Songwiqi for his contribution. The girls were so impressed by his words of wisdom,” said Nomathemba.
