Schooling to standstill for protest march on Friday SCHOOLING at no fewer than 15 secondary schools in the Northern Areas of Port Elizabeth will come to a halt on Friday, 3 August as learners, parents, teachers, religious leaders and members of civil society join forces in a march to protest against the Eastern Cape Department of Basic Education’s procrastination in appointing non-teaching staff at schools. The Bethelsdorp School Governing Body (SGB) Unit and Northern Areas Ministers Forum said in a statement non-teaching staff play a pivotal support role in all schools and are an inherent component of the success of any school. “In certain schools, the department itself decided on the total number of non-teaching posts but have to date failed to appoint staff. Cape Recife in Port Elizabeth is a case in point. This special needs and boarding school has 77 nonteaching, department-approved posts of which only 22 are filled. This makes it impossible for the school to cater for its pupils,” the statement read. The march is scheduled to take place from the Gelvandale Stadium parking area to City Hall.

N a garage in Zwide, one of the world’s best karatekas practises every day.
And the hard work just paid off again for Nkululeko Apleni (21). He recently returned from Mexico with a silver medal where he participated in the Japanese Shotokan-karate championships and was named the world’s second best. “It was an honour to represent my country and it makes my heart happy to see how many people are celebrating this achievement with me,” Apleni said. He dedicated his medal to his mother, Letitia Apleni, who died last year. In 2010 Apleni was the first black South African to become a karate world champion, with two gold and a bronze medal in Portugal. In 2002 he also participated in the Japanese Shotokan world championship and in 2007 he received the Eastern Cape Special Sports Council’s Chairman Award. Apleni believes there is a lot of talent in the urban areas, but that young people often struggle to follow their dreams because of a lack of facilities. His father, Sicelo Apleni, is his coach and mentor.

R5m dagga bust in Port Elizabeth NCEBA DLADLA MEMBERS of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Port Elizabeth have arrested a 34-year old man for dealing in dagga on Monday. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu said police, who were doing a routine check, found 71 large bags in a white Mercedes Benz light delivery bus travelling the N2 Freeway around Kinkelbos on Monday at about 11am. “The bags each weighed

God is still with us, say Mamas MARISKA SPOORMAKER WHEN people do bad things, there are always the good ones who rise to bring relief. That is what they have learnt, say the Motherwell Mamas, who have since 1999 earned a meagre income from recycling waste and converting it into craft products. In July the shipping containers which they use as their workshop, storage and offices were broken into. Everything that was not stolen then, was destroyed in a subsequent fire. After an article about it appeared in Die Burger, many readers opened their hearts and hands to these women, said
Jenny Rump of the Zwartkops Conservancy who supports the women in their project. “We were so surprised by all the help. We are so grateful. God is still with us,” Eunice Jacobs, one of the women, said last week. Another woman, Nosipho Mayinje, said, “Just as one starts thinking people are horrible, then these wonderful people appear and turn my heart around.” The Green Overall store which opens its doors at the Sunridge Park Mall today, bought all the women’s products, which were saved and stored by Rump, for R2 000. A Port Elizabeth couple has donated a further R1 000 in cash. Six manual sewing machines were also donated by Die Burger readers. The women had previously worked
with six of these machines because there was no electricity at their work place. All their machines were, however, lost in the burglary and fire. One of the donated machines, a beautifully decorated antique Singer with its wooden handle, took their breath away. “I just hope they can use it well,” Miems du Toit (69), the donor, said. “My husband says the machine should actually be in a museum. “My grandmother had given the machine to me in 1955 when I was in Std 5, but I was never much of a needle worker.” Rump said she could not believe how people in the midst of tough times were still so eager to help. “But it’s so typical of Port Elizabeth. Yes, this is the Friendly City.”

First National Bank (FNB) is one of the banks that came to pledge its support to TCTS Programme aimed at equipping Grade 4-7 pupils with the fundamental financial literacy skills. “We are proud to once again be part of the TCTS South Africa Programme. Financial Literacy is a skill which everyone must learn in order to take charge of their finan-
cial well-being. Teaching concepts such as saving at a young age to these children will hopefully start them on an early journey to being financially savvy adults,” said FNB Consumer Education Programme Manager Eunice Sibiya. Also equally elated by the idea of pupils taking part in this highly educational initiative was Isaac Booi principal Pat Mtyobo who said he hoped the lessons would change the pupils’ mind-set around money. “They (children) need to understand the importance of saving for a rainy day and saving to acquire items they would like to buy. I think it’s wonderful that the TCTS SA Programme coaches them in this area. I am looking forward to a change in their behaviour,” said Mtyobo. Lessons were designed to teach children how to create and understand budgets; differentiate between
needs and wants; track daily expenses; set realistic goals and plan accordingly as well as how to make saving money part of their lives. In addition to supporting initiatives aimed at empowering South Africans with skills on managing their money, FNB has launched a series of videos on YouTube.com and fnb.co.za which teach amongst other things reasons to save, how to save, insurance, budgeting and why one should open a bank account. Its other consumer education initiatives include face to face interventions within communities, organisations and informal groups and also the Be Financially Smart Campaign, which runs on various radio stations around the country reaching over 20 million people since 2006.

Gospel artist launches debut album “Intombi” to coincide with Women’s Month Port Elizabeth is set for a treat when one of its upcoming stars, Zanele Lobishe, will launch her debut album, “Intombi” at the Daku Hall on August 4. This is a must see show with the album entitled “Intombi” speaking directly to women of South Africa - challenging young girls to shift their focus away from earthly temptations to heavenly teachings in order to restore self-respect. Lobishe, who was born and raised in Kwazakhele, promises nothing but the best from her 10 track album. Written in both Xhosa and English, Lobishe’s songs are powerful, and are a testament to her own life’s story and her desire to be a mentor to young women. Local artists often lament the lack of sponsorships and resources that they have access to in the
Eastern Cape, but Lobishe decided to improvise. She used her own resources and should be applauded as an example not only to youth, but to other artists in the region for taking matters into her own hands. She worked with Motherwell Bebula Music Productions to put together the inspiring, heartfelt album. The launch of Lobishe’s album – which is aimed at inspiring young women - takes place during women’s month and shortly before national Women’s Day celebrations. For all music and gospel fans, Daku Community Hall in Kwazakhele is the place to be on Saturday, August 4 from 2pm. Tickets for the show can be purchased at the door for R60. For more information contact Zanele Lobishe at 0 076 178 7566.

My Community Coega focuses on youth for Mandela Day STAFF from the Coega Development Corporation (CDC) visited the Ilingelabantu Youth Care Centre in KwaZakhele as part of national Madiba Day celebrations. The CDC hosted a soup kitchen, donated food, toys, blankets and clothes and spent quality time with the children. The CDC group later went to Booysens Park informal township where another soup kitchen was hosted in an open area. “The CDC feels strongly about investing in the future, whether it is securing investments that will diversify the economic options of the Eastern Cape or hosting skills development programmes and working to grow small businesses. But at the heart of SA’s future is the youth – and without a wellsupported and cared for youth, the socioeconomic development of our country is going to be limited,” said Ayanda Vilakazi, CDC head of marketing and communications. The CDC through its Corporate Social In-
vestment office adopted the Ilingelabantu Youth Care Centre in 2009 when a group of interns established the engagement as an on-going project. Ilingelabantu Youth Care Centre was started by certified child care giver, Sarah Thandiwe Bokoyi and three other women at the height of apartheid violence in the late 1980s, after they noticed children eating off the streets, playing on dumps and turning to crime. Bokoyi has taken upon herself to feed the children, buy clothes and provide support for their schooling requirements. The children who are cared for at the centre are between the ages of two and 18 and often come from child-headed households that hover below the poverty line. The CDC interns have also been actively raising funds to support Bokoyi in her endeavours, which now includes hosting a soup kitchen for the elderly people of her surrounding area. Owner of Siya and Caissie Dread Salon in New Brighton, Siya, aka Siyabonga Cembi, specialises in dreadlocks. Siya boasts of a wide variety of clientiele that includes the who’s who in the arts and entertainment industry. These include the former SABC 1 Jam Alley Presenter Twasa, Gospel singer Lusanda Mcinga and her (also) singing son Bethusile, Joyous Celebration member Sylvester Fulani, Algoa FM’s Programmes Manager Mio Kondleka and Bay TVs Music Programme Presenter Exceedo Yisaka, among others. Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism CEO Mandlakazi Skefile is another high profile client of Siya’s. “Hairbraidingistheidealsolutionforpeoplewho do not want chemicals on their hair but still want to look good in different styles,” explained Siya. Apart from the one in New Brighton, Siya owns salons in Mount Frere, Kokstad, Butterworth and King Williams Town. Today he is opening a salon in Uitenhage; and will open another one in Peddie later in the month. “I have been doing braids for a long time as my hair can no longer take chemicals. Finding Siya’s place has been the best thing that has ever hap-
pened. Siya styles them (braids) well. And, the service is good,” said Nomachule Nomavuka of Bluewater Bay. Siya’s story starts in rural Mount Frere where he was born and bred. He started doing hair at Mt Frere High School where he matriculated. After school Siya, whose other pastime is music, went to Johannesburg to try his luck in the Pop Stars competition but he ran out of money and he was forced to find ways to make money. He decided to braid people’s hair. But it was costly as he had to make house calls and travelling was expensive. As his clients increased Siya had to ask existing salons (for space) “to rent me the station”. “Clients increased in numbers as they loved what I was doing so it became obvious that I should open my own salon in Soweto, Johannesburg,” said Siya proudly. Siya is married to Casandra Mabombo who runs the salon in eQonce. Siya trained her. “I train all my employees. The plan is to qualify them into specialists that open and run their salons successfully,” said Siya. He dreams of one day owning an academy where he will be training young entrepreneurs – men and women – to open their own salons and to tap into this growing market. “We work well with Siya. He gives us space to grow and shows us innovations. I see this business growing big. In fact, by 2020 about 20% of South Africans will be doing braiding,” said Bongani Bam, the Brand Manager.
Spur Masidlale Ambassador shines his light NCEBA DLADLA VALUABLE life lessons are learnt everyday from children who participate in the Spur Masidlale Campaign. One of those lessons comes from the unique story of a 14-year old boy, Rushane Malgas from Hillside, Port Elizabeth. Since its inauguration in 2005, the spur Masidlale statistics tell a heart-warming story, having touched the lives of more than 28 000 school-going children, developed and groomed more than 700 coaches and visited in excess of 100 stadia in South Africa. Focusing on giving those less fortunate a fair chance of success, the programme aims to educate and inspire using soccer as a platform. Described as the epitome of Masidlale initiative, Rushane suffers from a disease called Sys-
temic Lupus Nephritis which causes harm to the skin, joints, kidneys and brain. This soccer mad teenager had a big dream realised last year when, courtesy of the Reach for a Dream Foundation, he jetted off to Old Trafford in the UK to watch his number one soccer team Manchester United play against Everton. “I love Wayne Rooney. In this country my number one team is Kaizer Chiefs with Simphiwe Tshabalala being the man,” Rushane told PE Express Indaba. To honour Rushane, Spur donated 400 soccer balls to him which he can in turn donate to enthusiastic soccer lovers as the Masidlale Ambassador. “I will give these balls to other kids who have the same disease as mine; and to those who are mad about soccer but have no resources,” said Rushane.

Shining Stars win ZWIFA League SELBY MADIKANE IT was ectasy when Shining Stars were crowned Zwide Football Association (ZWIFA) Marina Sea Salt Premier League champions after drawing 1-1 against their neighbours Real Crusaders during the last game of the season at Camper United grounds in Soweto-On-Sea on 22 July. Stars needed a draw while Saders needed a win because their league points were 70 and 68 respectively before the game. It was Saders who registered a well-taken goal by Unathi Sgcebhi Gxogxo in the tenth minute. Stars were kept on their back-feet for about 30 minutes of the first half. But when Stars super substitute Lucky Danster was brought into the fray, the game changed for Stars. In the 59th minute Danster nearly brought life to his side when his
