Full military funeral for cop killed on duty NCEBA DLADLA A PORT Elizabeth police constable who was gunned down together with a colleague while on duty in Sakuba Street, Veeplaas on Monday morning will receive a full military arranged funeral next week Thursday. Constable Thandiswa Bambiso (33), a mother of three, was gunned down in the early hours of Monday morning while patrolling the streets with Constable Mongezi Mqina (35). Mqina was also shot and critically injured. After the shooting a critically injured Mqina managed to drive to a satellite police station in Zwide. He is recovering at Netcare Greenacres Hospital where he was admitted in a critical condition. “A military funeral means that police will be in full military uniform and in charge of the proceedings during the funeral on Thursday next week,” said Police Spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge. At the time of going to press, the details of the venue of the funeral or that of the memorial service on Wednesday next week was still not finalised. The news of the attack on the two police officers was received with shock and anger by SAPS management in Pretoria. In a statement is-

sued to the media by the acting national commissioner of Police, Lt. General Nhlanhla Mkwanazi, he said the continuous attack on police officers cannot be disregarded. “Communities need to stand resolutely opposed to such criminality,” said Mkwanazi, adding that the men and women in blue will remain undeterred in their quest to ensure safety and security. According to KwaZakhele Police Station management, the bereaved family was still in such distress and shock yesterday that PE Express Indaba could not speak to them. Colleagues described Bambiso as a friendly and lovable person who will leave a void with her untimely passing. Constable Mqina, who suffered two gunshot wounds in the attack, was in a critical but stable condition at Greenacres hospital. No arrests have been made yet but police were working around the clock to arrest the perpetrators of this heinous crime which resulted in Bambiso’s colleagues receiving counselling. “We’ll leave no stone unturned in our investigations until the perpetrators are brought to book,” said Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lt. General Celiwe Binta, urging members of the police fraternity not to be despondent, but to remain vigilant in an endeavour to protect the people of the province.

“We’ll leave no stone unturned in our investigations until the perpetrators are brought to book.”

Funeral plans for the departed local rugby players NCEBA DLADLA

FUNERAL arrangements for the Motherwell rugby players who drowned at Bluewater Bay Beach after a training session have been announced. Masixole Myosana was buried from the Reformed Presbyterian Church in Chief Poto Street in Motherwell on Saturday.

“The youngest of the five, Avuyile Tshabalala (18) was buried yesterday (Tuesday) after a short service at his Xolile Street home in Motherwell,” said Motherwell Rugby Football Union PRO Manduleli Ngqoshana. “The funeral of Arthur Peters will be in Grahamstown today,” said Ngqoshana, adding that people who want to attend the funeral must be at NU1 stadium in Motherwell by 6 am. Xolisa Nyembezi’s funeral is

scheduled to take place in an area known as KwaNoncampa near King Williams Town on Thursday, whilst Anelisa Mvulela’s funeral will be in Chalumna near East London, also on Thursday. Transport is available at the same place at 6 am. The team captain, Lundi Ramba’s funeral will be on Saturday in Motherwell. Despite the big loss of six of their talented players, the Motherwell Rugby Football

Club team will still take part in the Easter Rugby Tournament in Cape Town this week. The team were training on the beach for this tournament on the day of the tragedy. “The team will leave for Cape Town to continue with the Easter Tournament. While we the management thought of cancelling the plans to go to Cape Town the players said “)no, we’ll go and play”. In the spirit of the departed who will surely be with them, they

take part in the tournament that they trained hard for,” said Ngqoshana. Ngqoshana and coach Msindisi Mazomba will not leave with the team so that they attend Ramba’s funeral on Saturday. Ngqoshana said even though they would have liked to have one funeral for the five players, they accepted the wishes of their families. He thanked everyone for the support they received from across the country.

HOUSANDS of funloving fans are expected to flock to Nelson Mandela Bay’s Hobie Beach for the 2012 Easter Splash Festival starting this Friday, April 6 to Monday, April 9. The launch of the 22nd Festival with four-days of fun – a flagship project for Nelson Mandela Bay as a tourist attraction with its mix of local, national and international artists, including the Brazilian Fiesta Group Napalma, Zonke Dikana, Andile B and Dj Cleo – was held at Hobie beach last Wednesday. “We are proud to host once again the largest water sports festival on the African continent, which reinforces our position as the Watersport Capital of Africa,” said Nelson Mandela Bay Executive mayor, Zanoxolo Wayile. Further more, it being an outdoor event and weather dependant, things are at this stage also looking up for the weather also playing along. On Monday

Weather SA forecast sunny weather for Friday and Saturday with temperatures set to soar to 29°C on Friday and 26°C on Saturday. On Sunday things are expected to cool down to 22°C with a small chance of rain. Beach action includes a World Cup Surf Ski race and the World Inflatable Boat Championships. There is also a new 32-team Knock-Out Touch Rugby competition this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. However, Wayile and Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism (NMBT) CEO, Mandlakazi Skefile, were quick to add that the festival was not only about watersports. Also on the menu is fun and entertainment for the whole family with a variety of craft and food stalls and activities for kids. This year’s fireworks promise to add “something special,” says Greg Moses of Go Big Events, which has been awarded the tender to organise and manage the 2012 Splash Festival. Go Big has secured some of the country’s top artists, as well as an international group. There will be two stages in the Hobie

Beach area, with entertainment ranging from magic, circus and comedy acts through some of the Metro and country’s best bands and musicians. Entertainment There will be daily entertainment at this year’s Splash with some of the country’s top artists, as well as an international group. There will be two stages in the Hobie Beach area, with entertainment ranging from music to magic, and circus and comedy acts with a heavy emphasis on local talent. One of the big attractions of the weekend will be a local ‘freestyle’ talent contest, which will be staged on Friday, April 6, from one ‘o clock in the afternoon. Dancers, singers and D-Js from the Metro will all be able

to strut their stuff on stage. Artists on the main stage on Friday include Nombongo, Fohloza, Andile B, Marinus van Rooyen, Voet Tappers Band, Denzil Africa Band, Snotkop, and the Vernon & Legends Band. The action on the main stage will start at around noon, and continue until about 10:30 in the evening on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Saturday’s highlights include the 6 Point Zero Band, Transformers, Shades of Blackness, Chapter 3, Eric & Friends Band, Shoelace, Jay, DJ Cleo & Teddy Bears, and Point 5. There will also be a Little Miss Splash pageant and a body building competition. Steff the Hypnotist will be performing on the second stage before the talent search. Sunday takes on a carnival atmosphere, with Brazilian Group Napalma bringing the sounds of the Rio Festival

from 9.45pm. On the main stage from noon will be acts such as AWOCD Minstrels, Steff the Hypnotist, Dejavu Dance Group, Faye Gatley, Charmaine Allison, Cecil Peters, Afromix, Mojazz, and Ernie Smith and Band. Circus acts will thrill the crowds at the second stage from noon. Entertainment on the Monday includes the Stone Band, Stuart Reece Band, Zonke, and Bellino the Magician. Local singers will once again be given the opportunity to appear on stage in a Karaoke open mike session from a quarter to one in the afternoon. The fun will wind down on Monday from around 3.15pm. Mayor Wayile emphasised that safety and security will be a top priority. “We will be clamping down hard on drinking. The sea, crowds and drunkenness do not mix,” he said.

Concern over Splash’s late tender process, beneficiaries NCEBA DLADLA THE Splash Festival 2012 is not without controversy this year with most of the concern revolving around the late appointment of the service provider to organise the event as well as how it benefits the disadvantaged. Some local businessmen aired these concerns at last week’s launch of the Splash Festival. The fact that there is only one week to promote and market this huge entertainment event on the Nelson Mandela Bay calendar, which is in its 22nd year, did not go down well with local music promoter Danny Mongo. “The marketing of the event is very poor. It is not doing justice to the more than R3 million spent by the Municipality on the festival. Nor is it fair to Go Big Events, the company that won the tender, to organise the event. It is too short notice,” said Mongo of Eyethu Promotions. Nelson Mandela Bay Events Director Seki Mandaba agreed that their appointment was on short notice but

blamed the change in the national tender regulations as specified in the Supply Chain Management for the delay. “Otherwise the appointment of the service provider and the launch of the programme would have started as early as October 2011,” said Mandaba. Mandaba said the event went out on tender in January. Go Big Events satisfied the adjudicators during meetings held from February 22 and was awarded the tender. Local Businessman Andile Siqwepu, who represents Nafcoc (National African Federated Chamber of Commerce), said he wants to know how the festival and the money spent on it by the municipality benefit the previously disadvantaged black communities. Go Big Events Director Greg Moses said they have included local artists in the event from across the metro and ensured that the Community Chest – which represents about 96 charities in the metro – is the beneficiary. “We are not satisfied. We cannot continue to hold events which only benefit a few at the expense of the poor in the townships,” said Siqwepu.

KwaMagxaki Customer Care Centre officially opened NCEBA DLADLA JOY was written all over the faces of the KwaMagxaki and nearby townships residents as Nelson Mandela Bay Council Speaker Maria Hermans officially opened the KwaMagxaki Customer Care Centre last Friday.

Official Opening of the plaque of KwaMagxaki Customer Care Centre was done by Speaker Councillor Maria Hermans (second from right) and community rep resentative Elizabeth Mtshihle. Councillor Joy Searle of the Budget and Treas ury Directorate on the right looks on. Photo: Nceba Dladla

The Centre, at the corner of Ralo and Uitenhage Road, is the fulfilment of a long-time dream of municipal ward councillors Andile Mfunda and Mbongeni Bungane. It cost the municipality just under R6.5 million to build

and about R300 000 to furnish and is the 14th Customer Care Centre built in the metro to bring services closer to the people. “We (the municipality) have been tasked to provide services to the people. We understand that the citizenry make the municipality. Without the citizenry, there is no municipality,” said Councillor Hermans. With this gesture, added Hermans, the ANC-led municipality was building friendships and lasting relationships with the communities it was serving. Residents will no longer need bus-fare to go to the City Treasurer in town or Cleary Park to pay for municipal accounts, check ac-

counts, apply for debt relief and to apply for the Assistance To The Poor Programme (ATTP). Residents from KwaMagxaki, Veeplaas, KwaDwesi, KwaDwesi Extension, KwaNoxolo and Joe Slovo will benefit from this centre and Councillor Hermans told them to “refuse to be sent to town because officials cannot assist. There is nothing that municipal customer care centres do that this centre will not do.” Hermans also urged the residents to use the centre and protect it jealously against vandalism and theft. She also told officials employed at the centre to provide excellent services in the spirit of Batho Pele.

Barefoot Campaign to collect shoes for poor children NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay Tourism (NMBT) Chief Executive Mandlakazi Skefile will join top executives in the metro in a drive to collect shoes for needy children on Tuesday, April 10. This will be part of the celebration of International Barefoot Day which is an initiative aimed at creating awareness of the daily experiences of poor children in underprivileged communities around the world. Skefile will be walking barefoot in a campaign called “One Day Without Shoes” to collect shoes. She will be joined by Protea Marine Ho-

tel General Manager, Danie Smit. Skefile, who wholeheartedly supports the initiative, believes that it will give tourism stakeholders an opportunity to plough back resources into the communities and schools around them. “We would like to encourage our members and tourism establishments in Nelson Mandela Bay to heed the call for donations, so that together we can build our city. I also encourage companies to take it up as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility,” said Skefile. Smit too saw this initiative as worthy of support. He said: “I feel it’s a worthwhile initiative to support. Every day, millions of people, especially children, suffer the indignity

of struggling to walk - this whole idea aims to capture this strife and will hopefully assist us in lobbying for great change in the world, particularly for the poor,” said Smit. The International One Day Without Shoes campaign was born out of the need to boost the health of the young school-going population by preventing the kind of infections that come through walking barefoot. In Mandela Bay Metro, the initiative has been taken up by many groups, including the Business Chamber’s Top 40 business Executives under the age of 40. Nelson Mandela Bay Executive mayor Zanoxolo Wayile also took the plunge and walked barefoot to collect shoes for the schoolgoing children in need.

Barry Levin helps Zwide school PE EXPRESS REPORTER BARRY Levin Investments contacted a couple of the schools in the Port Elizabeth area recently to see what their needs were and where they could be of assistance. Thandi Gcakasi of Elumanyanweni Public School, situated in Zwide was the only principal who responded, requesting help with the replacement of their photocopier and fax machine, and was rewarded with more than he asked for. According to Cindy Robson, manager of Barry Levin Investments, they paid a visit to the school. “We found that their needs were far greater than just a photocopier and fax machine. None of their ablutions were in working order and the 300 odd students were having to use buckets for toilets,” said Robson. According to her the situation was desperate, both from a hygienic and humanitarian point of view. “The principal also mentioned that children were leaving the school because of the ablution situation. The problem had arisen from vandals breaking into the school at night and steal-

ing the pipes and fittings rendering the ablutions useless.” Robson said the school grounds were terribly over-grown and unfortunately someone had been using the school grounds for dumping rubbish. Barry Levin Investments contacted a local garden service who cleaned out the rubbish and neatened up the grounds and Currie Plumbers were appointed to reinstate 4 of the ablution blocks consisting of 16 toilets. Security gates were installed on all of the ablution doors to ensure vandals could not gain access again. “Recently our staff went to the school to hand over the ablutions. We were welcomed with much aplomb. Angie Jones of the Department of Education was there and there were signs up at the entrance to the school welcoming Barry Levin and thanking us for our assistance,” said Robson. According to her the children sang songs and many of the parents were also there for the hand over. “We were made to feel very welcome.” There was a small ceremony where we also handed over a couple of bales of toilet paper and tried to stress the point of using this as opposed to newspaper in the toilets. They introduced a competition for the chil-

dren to enter by colouring in a picture about keeping the ablutions clean and the winners of each grade will receive a prize. “We were encouraged by the reaction to our offer of help. As this project will be on-going, we would like to extend an invitation to all our tenants who feel they would like to get involved to offer their assistance. The school needs help with big projects like, glazing, office equip-

ment, more burglar proofing, JoJo containers for the garden, help with starting a veggie garden and much more,” said Robson. According to her a great need also exists for toilet paper, scrap paper for the children to draw on and stationery. Anyone that would like to get involved in the project by providing services or by making a donation can call Kathy on 0 041 451 0203.

Racing against domestic violence PE EXPRESS REPORTER ACCORDING to the World Health Organisation, 60 000 women and children in South Africa are victims of domestic violence every month. The country has the highest incidence of domestic violence in the world – and those are just the cases that are reported. “I believe the statistics could be as high as 100 000 per month,” said Lindsay Ziehl, senior supervisor of Yokhuselo Haven in Port Elizabeth, which provides safety and shelter for abused women and their children. “So many people don’t report domestic violence.” Since opening its doors 22 years ago, the haven has assisted thousands of women and children. It is a fitting tribute that they are once again the beneficiary of the SPAR Women’s 10km Challenge in Nelson Mandela Bay on Saturday, May 5, an event last year supported by 11 000 participants. SPAR Eastern Cape marketing manager, Martin Webber, said a race mainly supported by women and children benefiting a haven that supported abused women and children was “the right fit” for this community-focused event. “We feel the haven provides the right care for these women and children. “As abuse is generally kept under wraps, an event the size of ours allows the haven to be made known to those who may be in need and not know where to turn.” Yokhuselo Haven runs two homes – Prospect Hill Crisis Centre in Central, where victims stay on a short-term basis, usually just a night, and a safe house at a secure address, sheltering families who are in danger.

The crisis centre is often the first port of call for survivors of domestic violence. “We are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We never, ever close,” said Ziehl. Along with providing a safe environment, which includes food, clothing, a bath and a bed, the crisis centre supervisor will arrange for statements to be taken, and for counselling and evaluation by a social worker, who may recommend that the family be relocated to the safe house. There they are provided with accommodation, food and clothing, and also receive assistance with protection orders, ongoing counselling and help in finding employment. Women often stay at the safe house for up to three months at no charge. “It’s so important to us, knowing that the community and a retail giant like SPAR support non-violence against women and children. Each time SPAR puts on this race, I am sure it makes an impact in all communities,” said Ziehl. “It’s also heart-warming to see schools involved in the race – and understanding what the day is about. The fight against domestic violence starts with our children.” Ziehl said the race provided an “informing platform” for the haven. In the five years that it has been a beneficiary, women from all communities have approached the organisation directly after the event to give talks on domestic violence. “This information needs to be out there, it needs to be said,” said Ziehl. Having reached the highest level of participation in netball, Mdodana decided to share her expertise and experience with her local community. This inspiration gave birth to the Vision Girls Netball Academy, which at present is a group of 25 aspirant netballers from various locations in the Nelson Mandela Metro who are currently receiving comprehensive training in basketball, fitness and life skills. Mdodana believes that some of these girls have provincial and even national capabilities. Mdodana’s passion for netball and her plans for a netball academy came to the attention of the Corporate Social Investment arm of The Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment World and they have enthusiastically supported Vision Girls since it began in early January 2011 by supplying kit, as well as playing and first aid equipment.

Local amateurs graduate to become professional boxers NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay has included 20 more boxers who graduated from amateurs to professionals at Soqhayisa High School in Motherwell at the weekend. The 20 were part of the 42 boxers that came up for the sparring session and graduation test led by Boxing South Africa (BSA) Director of Operations Loyiso Mtya and BSA Local Service Provider Mthunzi Mapitiza. “We are so excited because there were a few more white boxers that passed including two heavyweights,” Mapitiza said, adding that with the three

heavyweights already in their books, the division is going to be much more exciting. “We saw a lot of raw talent. Natural talent with ability, but we could not find schooled boxers,” said Mtya. Explaining, Mtya said he has yet to see boxers who fight according to the basics of the game - boxers who know the ABC of boxing, who can stand, throw a jab, one-two and use the parameters of the ring to defend themselves. “That, unfortunately we did not see. We saw boxers who are not well-schooled to fight according to Olympic style in which computers are used to score fights. I think, we need boxing specialists back in our gyms,” said Mtya.

Mtya however agreed with Mapitiza about the hype and excitement brought by white boxers, especially heavyweights in South African rings. “Historically, white boxers bring crowds to the fight venues. They bring unity and add an excitement to the game,” said Mtya, adding that in Gauteng there is a visible growth in white boxing fans numbers “because many white boxers are coming back to the game.” Mapitiza reminded the 20 graduating boxers including those who want to renew their licences to take the annual Hepatitis B and HIV tests in order to register with BSA as active boxers from 1 April.

Veteran boxers to meet on Sunday NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay Boxing Veterans Association is calling members to a meeting to be held at the Lilian Ngoyi Sports Centre in Kwazakhele Township, Port Elizabeth on Sunday 8 April, starting at 2 pm. “This is a meeting to take very important decisions on the role of the boxing veterans association in the development of boxing countrywide,” said Chairperson Ace Makaluza. Makuluza urged boxing veterans from

Uitenhage to make an effort to attend the meeting as he would not like them to be left behind. “We would like to urge every former professional boxer to come and work with us to take the sport forward. We urge, especially, veterans from Uitenhage to please come,” said Makaluza. Makaluza said plans are afoot to meet the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality structure for the formation of the provincial structure which will in turn work for the formation of the national boxing veterans structure, as instructed by Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula, he said.
