Student nurse arrested for baby abduction NCEBA DLADLA A STUDENT nurse who allegedly abducted a 3-day-old baby from the Dora Nginza Hospital in Kwazakhele was arrested yesterday morning after she gave herself up to Police. Sibongile Mama (28), a third year student nurse, appeared in the Magistrates’ Court yesterday afternoon, but did not plead and was released on R1000 bail. The case was postponed to April 18. Meanwhile the baby’s mother, Marianne Wabanie, was yesterday afternoon still anxiously awaiting DNA results to confirm whether a child that was abandonded in New Brighton on Friday is her abucted child. Wabanie’s nightmare started last week Wednesday when she allegedly left the child in the care of the student nurse to go and take a shower. When she returned to her bed, the baby was gone. SWEET REVENGE FOR BUSH BUCKS
Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu, a case of abduction was opened. Police had a possible break-through in the case on Friday when a 48-year old woman from Thsewu Street in New Brighton claimed that two unknown women, driving in a black or navy BMW, left her with a baby boy after asking to use the outside toilet of her house. After spending some time in the toilet the two allegedly left the house without taking leave of the owner. She then alerted the police. “The police are still waiting for the DNA test that will help to determine whether the boy who was abandoned is the one who was abducted from Dora Nginza hospital,” said Gwavu yesterday. Police arrested the 48-year old woman and charged her with perjury after she gave two different statements to police. She was however, released after she gave the court information that later corroborated her story, Gwavu told PE Express Indaba. .

Detective praised after sentencing of repeat offenders THE dedication of a member of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Uitenhage Police Station, detective Johan Mostert, has led to the arrest and subsequent sentencing of two suspects who were separately involved in a spate of business burglaries in Uitenhage. According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Gerda Swart, it is the effective investigation skills and professionalism of Detective Mostert that led to the nabbing of Gerome Arnolds (26) and Xolani Mandla (22) who were both repeat offenders. Arnolds was arrested in 2010 for housebreaking and theft at businesses. He was out on parole for murder at the time when he committed the burglaries. He stayed in custody after his latest arrest. Last week Thursday he was sentenced by magistrate John Montgomery to an effective 11 years imprisonment on five counts of burglary. Mandla was arrested for a burglary at
a business in the Kruisriver area. It was established that he was also out on bail and that he had cases of housebreaking and theft pending against him in the Cradock area. Mandla was arrested by the community on Monday, January 23 for housebreaking and theft at a business. He stayed in custody and on Monday, 20 February he was sentenced to three years imprisonment, without the choice of paying a fine, by magistrate Neil Carol at the Uitenhage Magistrates’ court. “We as the SAPS are convinced that convictions such as these mentioned above, seal the public’s trust in our police and boosts their confidence that the police are always on the communities’ side in ensuring their safety. As police leadership, we want to encourage our policemen and women to continue doing sterling work in our quest to make South Africa a safer and better place,” said Swart.

Cosatu march against labour brokers today NCEBA DLADLA MEMBERS of the Congress of South African Trade Union (Cosatu) are expected to converge at the Nangoza Jebe Community Hall in New Brighton at 10am today for a march to the Vuyisile Mini Square (City Hall) to handover a memorandum to the Labour Department and Chamber of Commerce. This was said by Vuyisile Mini Cosatu Local Chapter Chairperson Mazotsho Dukwe. According to Dukwe, today (Wednesday) it’s a national general stay-away by the largest trade union in the country - to march for the banning of labour brokers, against e-tolling and for a livingwage. “Port Elizabeth is one of the six regions in the Eastern Cape that will be taking part in this march ,” said Dukwe yesterday. Some of the regions are East London, Queenstown, Mthatha, Lusikisiki and Kokstad. Explaining, Dukwe said Cosatu took resolutions on the issues of e-tolling, the Walmart, anti-corruption campaign, on health and on education. But it was the burning issues of labour brokers and e-tolling that make him expect a high number of Cosatu affiliates and supporters taking part in the march.
Meanwhile, police spokesperson Brigadier Marinda Mills said there will be a large police presence during the course of the march to monitor the situation. The Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber said in a statement on the planned protest that the Chamber is deeply concerned at the impact of the protest on the country’s fragile economy and that they are disappointed that these issues could not be constructively resolved within NEDLAC, as the structure specifically designed for engagement on such issues. “We believe there is still room to reach a mutually acceptable solution to the labour-broking issue, bearing in mind that they do have a role to play in facilitating employment in an economy where job creation is desperately needed.” The chamber stated that where labour brokers act unethically or do not abide by legislation designed to protect employees, they believe that the legal remedies available should be used to deal with them. “While we recognise the right of unions and workers to pursue protest action on socio-economic issues, we strongly believe this needs to be balanced against the current situation where industry can ill afford production losses which impact negatively on export orders and the country’s ability to attract new investment,” the statement read.
Metro opens Customer Care Centre in Motherwell IN an attempt to bring services closer to the people, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has opened yet another Customer Care Centre at the Raymond Mhlaba Sport Centre in NU4, Motherwell on Monday. This brings the number of Customer Care Centres in the metro to 13 where residents can pay for the services rendered by their municipality. Another Customer Care Centre in Ralo Street, KwaMagxaki will be opened and fully operational in April, said Nelson Mandela Bay Communications Director Roland Williams. “The new Customer Care Centre will primarily provide
NMBM account-related solutions to residents,” said Williams. According to Williams, the following services will be be offered: Accounts enquires, arrangement for the settlement or repayment of arrear municipal accounts, debt relief applications, Assistance to the Poor (ATTP) applications, opening of new municipal accounts as well as opening or closing municipal accounts. Williams has emphasised however, that no payments will be accepted in the centre. But customers, he said, can use any of the other eight methods to pay municipal accounts.

Team work stops school thugs NCEBA DLADLA

UNSCRUPULOUS burglars crippling schools which are already struggling owing to the impoverished communities they serve, are being stopped in their tracks by the community joining forces with the police. Qaphelani High School in KwaZakhele, has fallen victim to robbers and vandals on several occasions, but since the Community Policing Forum (CPF) in the New Brighton Policing precinct – which includes the KwaZakhele area – started with visibile policing by patrolling the area 24/7, there are no more burglaries, said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Mzoxolo Thobani. According to Thobani, members of the CPF received training by ADT on radio, equipment and communication which enabled them to be effective in cutting down on crime. They also wear special brightly coloured bibs sponsored by ADT and clearly identifying them. According to Qaphelani High’s deputy principal, Nomawethu Stemele, thugs from surrounding shacks in the area used to enter the school premises at any time of the day and disrupted schooling. “It was common for thugs to come in during breaktime and rob school children of their money and other belongings. We’ve got an alarm system but they would simply come in and steal from our laboratories and ad-
min block,” said Stemele. Since the CPF started with patrols, however, there is peace in the area with no complaints of children being robbed. Neighbouring Ben Nyathi Primary School’s principal, Mazotsho Dukwe, said he has seen a marked decrease in robberies and break-ins at his school probably because of the patrols at Qaphelani High School, which is in the same area. “In the past we have had a huge problem with burglaries and theft of taps, electric pipes and wires, but we have not experienced any of this since the beginning of the year. We are happy and would like the CPF to adopt our school as well because we cannot say for sure that the thugs will not target us later,” said Dukwe. Motherwell CPF Chairperson Nomawethu Jama believes that community involvement will scare thugs away. According to Jama, Motherwell, including Kamvelihle, also had a huge problem with school break-ins especially during school holidays and weekends. But not anymore. “We run community outreach programmes and make sure that the police are visible and that they cooperate with communities. We are winning the war on crime,” said Jama proudly. Jama added: “We have also realised that often learners from the school are involved in the break-ins. So if you involve the CPF, you immediately cut down on these types of break-ins and robberies.”

Child obesity addressed RISING levels of child obesity and physically inactive lifestyles; as well as the challenges of engaging children in bringing about a more sustainable world, are currently high on the Eastern Cape education agenda. From Kwazakhele to Motherwell, there is a great need across communities for innovative educational resources and experiences that can help teachers and schools to empower learners to take charge of their own well-being and to care for their environments. The Woolworths Primary Education Programme has broken ground with three entertaining, educational lessons delivered in class by professional presenters. The lessons use movement, rhyme, storytelling, games and group participation to creatively convey key information about healthy choices and sustainable living to Grade Four learners at participating schools. Recently, learners from Astra Primary in the Eastern Cape experienced the action-packed ‘Healthy Living is Fun!’ lesson. This lesson got kids moving and taught them the basics of a balanced meal. The importance of physical activity and making healthy eating choices was emphasised through the use of movement and rhyme. The interactive and memorable ‘Five to Feel
Alive’ activity provided five essential guidelines for healthier living. “The idea of highly interactive, entertaining class lessons is to provide a new and innovative platform for teaching and learning about healthy, sustainable living,” said Pieter Twine, Woolworths Educational Programmes Manager. “Now Woolworths can share its expertise on healthy eating and sustainability right where it counts: in the classroom”. He said this is an important extension of the programme and yet another way that they can support the upliftment of education in the Eastern Cape by providing schools with high quality educational resources and learning experiences that effectively address the concerns about educating children about healthy, sustainable lifestyles. Other lessons available to schools in the programme are: ‘The Big Stomp – Our Ecological Footprint’ lesson in which kids love joining in ‘The Big Stomp Rap’ and playing the ‘Earth Safety Game’. Twine said music is a great way for learners to learn and recall the five essential, practical ways that they can reduce their ecological footprint in their community and contribute to a more sustainable environment. ‘The Great Food Mystery’ lesson,
conceived to address the problem of the present-day lack of understanding of where our food comes from, introduces a story-telling Truth Detective who needs the learners’ help. It uses a fruit and vegetable rap which tells the story of the conditions each need in order to grow. Learners are reminded of our dependence on Nature for healthy food. The fun-filled, 30-minute lessons support Grade four educators in bringing the curricula to life and innovatively engaging learners in a deeper, interactive learning experience. The Woolworths Primary Education class lessons have been developed to meet the requirements of specific Learning Outcomes in the Life Orientation, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences Learning Areas. They complement the existing Woolworths Primary Education educator resources on healthy eating, physical activity, Permaculture and sustainability. Schools participating in the Woolworths Education Programme in the Eastern Cape can book the class lessons through their local Woolworths Education Programme coordinators. Bay TV’s vivacious Pumla is set to succeed NCEBA DLADLA PUMLA Tali lost her parents in 2004 at the tender age of 16; but she knew that was not the end of the world. Even when her granny died six months later, Pumla never let that stand In her way - albeit painful and close to being disastrous. The Bay TV 1 City News Reader Pumla knows what she wants in life and will never quit until she gets it. Born and bred in the Bay to Nomgqibelo and Sandile Tali Pumla (25) discovered her love for journalism while still at Ithembihle Comprehensive School. This love proved strong even when her classmates talked about careers as lawyers, chartered accoutants and pharmacists. Tragedy hit when Pumla lost her parents in separate incidents in 2004. “I was in Grade 11. It was very hard but I told myself never to give up school. I wanted to make it in life,” she said. Pumla attributes her success to her elder sister Nomfuneko Mda who took care of her after her parents’ death. After matric Pumla qualified as a public relations practitioner from Varsity College in 2006 and acquired a Media Studies Qualification from MSC College in 2008. Pumla has worked as news reporter for Bay FM and KQFM. “Commumity journalism is neccessary for communication, cooperation and community upliftment,” said Pumla One of her highlights at Bay TV was reporting on the Zwide community complaining about poor service delivery and afterwards being called by residents saying their problems were solved - thanks to her reporting. “People are giving us good feedback, so I can say I am happy with my job so far,” said Pumla, adding that in the future though, she sees herself taking up a position as a communications manager for a sports team. Pumla confesses to being a sports fanatic - a love which her mother instilled in her. Nomgqibelo loved boxing, soccer and rugby. “I Iove sports and won’t mind taking up a sports related job perhaps in Cape Town or Johannesburg. Spur Masidlale Soccer Programme kicks off NCEBA DLADLA PORT Elizabeth was chosen as one of the four lucky cities in the country to host the Spur Masidlale Soccer Youth Programme which was launched in NU2 Stadium in Motherwell on Wednesday last week. About 400 young football hopefuls converged at the NU2 stadium to take part in the programme that is offered in partnership with South African Football Association (Safa) and SA Schools Football Association (Sasfa). The programme has already touched the lives of over 30 000 children since it was started five years ago. The Spur-grown concept, which is recognised as one of the leading youth soccer development initiatives in the country, was launched in 2005 as 12 one-day coaching clinics (benefiting local coaches) with the key objective to uplift local communities through the beautiful game of football.
“The programme is, however, not only about football,” the Spur Masidlale Programme Ambassador and former Banyana Banyana Captain Desiree Ellis is quick to add. It is about education, life skills and community upliftment, said Ellis. The involvement of Ellis and former Kaizer Chiefs striker Patrick Mayo as ambassadors of the programme is to inspire the youth but also to make them understand that there is life after football. “Too many of our former soccer heroes were not prepared for the hardship of life after soccer and are struggling today. Some die poor and some live a life of begging,” Ellis said. Ellis further reminded the youth that at least five of the current crop of Banyana Banyana players were also students at university. Port Elizabeth’s Mayo, who is the SABC Umhlobo Wenene soccer analyst is also involved in coaching young soccer hopefuls in the townships.

REAL Crusaders were untouchable when they managed to overpower Zwide Celtics 2-1 in their Zwide Football Association (ZWIFA) Premier League clash. Saders - as the side is affectionately known as by fans - had to fight hard against the gallant Celtics. Saders drew first blood when Vuyisile Ndeyo scored the first goal. Isiwelele didn’t want to disappoint their fans and answered with a goal by Ayanda Blou to level matters. The Saders’ hard work paid off in the end when striker Siyabulela Thembani scored to bring the final score to 2-1. Other ZWIFA Premier League results: Major Chiefs 2-2 Soweto Angels

Masakhane Future Stars shine in swimming EXPRESS REPORTER THE Masakhane Future Stars, a group of young kids from the Motherwell township who are afforded the opportunity to take part in regular open water swimming events, are starting to shine at swimming competitions. Thanks to the support of Willard Batteries, 16 members of this group have been given the opportunity to take part in the Cirrus Bio-Ears Swim Challenge Series which takes place on a monthly basis at Marina Martinique in Jeffreys Bay. This EP Aquatics swimming event includes a variety of distances for the swimmers and this past Sunday morning all 16 members of the Willard Batteries squad took part and completed the 1km open water swim. Such has been the success of this development program that Mkhululi Heka was placed third in the Men’s Category on Sunday with fellow squad member Sandiswa Makhonya winning the u/13 age group category. The Masakhane Future Stars Development Trust began in 2009 with
over 100 kids from Motherwell, Kwazakhele and Gelvandale being supported to attend fortnightly open water swimming events in Nelson Mandela Bay. Today it’s only thanks to the support of Pagdens Attorneys, the Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment Centre and Willard Batteries that up to 20 kids from Motherwell have been given the opportunity to take part in events like the Weekend Post Ocean Racing Series, the SPAR Redhouse River Mile and the Cirrus Bio-Ears Swim Challenge Series this season. As part of their CSI programmes, the companies have come forward to support the children by covering all their costs to get them to and from the events. Recently the Metro, through the support of Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism, have also supported the programme with season ticket passes for the kids to train in the Motherwell swimming pool. Full results from Sunday’s Swim Challenge Series are available on www.ecswim.co.za with pictures on the facebook page www.facebook.com/ecswim.

ManBabes secure awaywin SELBY MADIKANE MANCHESTER Babes collected all three maximum valuable points when they secured a 2-1 away-win against KUBS in their recent SAFA EC clash. This was the outcome in the teams’ recent SAFA EC Sasol Ladies Stream A League fixture clash at the Chevrolet Stadium in New Brighton. Both teams played an attacking game right from the start of the match. KUBS kept on knocking on Babes’ door, but the visitors’
defenders were rock solid. In the 30th minute, KUBS forward Noluthando Ntshaba scored the first goal of the game. Babes was on fire and its hard work yielded good results with a well taken goal by Sesethu Sikhotsi in the 40th minute to level matters. Babes’ skilful striker struck in the 55th minute to put them in a 2-1 lead. Five minutes before the final whistle, Babes goalkeeper saved a well taken shot by Ntshaba. KUBS central defender, Nonzuzu Ngcelwano, played extremely well, stopping skilful Babes striker, Vena, in her
tracks, while Babes sweeper Lundiya Matole fulfilled a key role for her team at the back. . Despite a number of challenges, Manchester Babes are set to win the SAFA EC national promotional playoffs in May this year. According to Babes coordinator, Sandile Konono, the side is leading the pack of teams with 23 points. He said they are experiencing financial and logistical challenges, but won’t lose sight of their goal. People who are able to assist can call Sandile on 074 643 4845 or Archie on 084 450 6122.

Red City loses at home SELBY MADIKANE RED City gave a good account of themselves despite a 2-1 loss to Real Aces during their SAFA NMB SAB Regional League clash at the Chevrolet Stadium recently. Fans were treated to enterprising soccer by both outfits. City came to
take all three points, but this wasn’t meant to be. Aces also set their sights on winning the match, following some dismal performances recently. Bulelani Nongongoma scored the first Aces goal in the 30th minute. City replied within five minutes when their danger man, Unathi Magadu scored an equaliser. In the

Funds injected into grassroots soccer SELBY MADIKANE SMILES all round were the order of the day when Marina Sea Salt recently donated money towards the grassroots soccer development programme of the New Brighton Football Association (NEBFA) Junior League. NEBFA deputy president, Michael Matanzima told PE Express Indaba that Marina Sea Salt set aside R37 000 for the u/11, u/13, u/15 and u/17 teams. A visibly excited Matanzima expressed gratitude to Marina Sea
Salt for their generosity on behalf of NEBFA. He said the sponsorship will undoubtedly assist with keeping children in the development programme and by so doing, prevent them from getting involved with drug and alcohol abuse and other crime-related activities. “These young boys will now be able to become role models within their communities,” said Matanzima. The money will be used to purchase soccer kit, trophies, medals, balls and the like to motivate the youngsters in the programme.

This comes after Dodgers lifted the Remax Trophy when they ousted Bucks on penalties during the 2010/2011 season final. In their recent clash, both sides showed clear intent to win. They played running football with both goalkeepers standing their ground.
During the last moments of the game, Bucks defender Bulelani Tshtyana headed home a brilliant goal from a corner-kick to bring the final score to 1-0. Young Aces whalloped SOLLAR Stars vowed not to disappoint their loyal supporters when they walloped their arch-rivals Young Aces 5-1 in their Port Elizabeth East Football Association (PEEFA) Premier League match at the Veeplaas stadium on 25 February. Stars also proved that they were once a respected side in the Nelson Mandela Bay region when they collected another three valuable maximum points following their hard fought 1-0 victory over Real Stars on 26 February. Young Teenagers, affectionately known as AmaChina, thumped the high-riding Young Idols 4-1 while the on-form Black Arrows drew 2-2 with Real Aces. Aces whacks WUBS FANS is their droves could not believe seeing African Aces whacking Walmer United Brothers 9-0 in the Walmer Football Association (WAFA) Premier League game at Walmer Community Fields on 26 February. Brazil United disappointed their supporters when they lost 3-0 to Teenagers FC. Ghetto Stars were all over Moscow when they defeated them 4-0. Young Cosmos had to run for their money following their narrow 3-2 escape victory over the gutsy Peace United. Walmer Stars put up a good fight despite their 3-1 loss to Airport Valley United. Real Madrid played a 2-2 draw with Mabayibone Strikers while Seaview United trailed by a 3-2 close margin to Golden Heroes.
