Motherwell alcohol abusers graduate to become ambassadors of change NCEBA DLADLA
F
ORMER perpetrators of violence against women and children as a result of alcohol abuse in the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality graduated yesterday (Tuesday) to become the agents of change in their communities. About 82 men who were hailed as Amadoda Aqotho (real men) from Motherwell are part of the Tavern Intervention Programme (TIP), an initiative run by SA Breweries, Men for Development in SA (Medsa), SA Police Services, Community Policing Forums, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, the Provincial Social Development Department and the Liquor Board to encourage responsible drinking. “It is also to make men become real men. Men who drink for enjoyment but do not abuse alcohol. Men who don’t drink and abuse women and children but respect children’s rights instead. Men who don’t practise unsafe sex and spread HIV/Aids or rape children with the hope to cure Aids,” said SAB’s Enterprise Development and Community Partnerships Head Hepsy Mkhungo. Motherwell SAPS Col. Harrison Ngini said he was happy with the initiative as he now has 82 more troops (including 200 SAPS members in Motherwell) to fight against the ills of men abusing women and children as well as men causing fatalities on the road as a result of drunken driving. Statistically, Col. Ngini said, there was a high number of assault cases in Motherwell between couples and between husbands and wives and he thought these would be reduced drastically as these men, “the ambassadors of change would spread the gospel to perpertrators.” “You must help us to end this heinous crime in our communities. To do that though, you must lead by exam-
ple, “ said CPF Chairperson Nomawethu Jama. Portfolio Councillor Nomonde Mhlobiso also congratulated “the stars and heroes for their dynamism in assisting the municipality to effect the change communities are hoping to see.” A group of 100 men started the programme with a few not completing it. They had to undergo training and mentorship at Tobho’s Tavern in Motherwell for six weeks. On their graduation, they signed a pledge and received certificates to acknowledge their participation in this programme led by the Star PSL Football Referees boss Sylvester “Professor” Ndaba a SAB employee and former Kaizer Chiefs star player Isaac “Shakes” Kungoane who also encouraged the men to live happy lives as the agents of change in their communities. The programme has been hailed as one of the most innovative approaches to tackling alcohol abuse in South Africa by international and local NGOs, and has also been recognised as the most sustainable intervention to curb alcohol related social problems. “One of TIP’s unique features is that the workshops are held in taverns,” says Dr Vincent Maphai, SAB’s Executive Director of Corporate Affairs and Transformation. “We find that these are the venues where the men we target spend a large part of their day, and where they feel the most comfortable in expressing themselves. “Few empowerment programmes attempt to deal with the source of social problems in South Africa, and instead focus solely on assisting victims of these crimes. By then it’s too late and we have not fulfilled our duty as responsible citizens to protect the innocent and vulnerable, says Dr Maphai. “SAB wants to be part of the solution by not only addressing the symptoms of the problem but by targeting its source. Empowering these men with the necessary information
to become ambassadors of change will mean a better life for their families and entire communities.” Over the next five years, SAB hopes to reach at least 4000 men across
South Africa. SAB partners with a number of community based organisations and leaders - including community policing forums, tavern owners and com-
munity influencers - to ensure the success of TIP and to help identify those men who require help. Police databases and social workers assist in identifying offenders.

Russell Domingo honours Bay school heroes with a visit NCEBA DLADLA SOUTH African National Cricket Team Assistant Coach Russell Domingo visited Chapman High School in Gelvandale, Port Elizabeth last week as part of Eastern Cape Heroes’ visit to honour school heroes. Chapman High was one of the schools in the Eastern Cape whose young heroes were identified through the Annual Pick ’n Pay School Club Heroes, Captains and Achievers Club Programme, said Algoa FM Marketing Manager Toinette Koumpan. According to Koumpan, Algoa FM teamed up with Pick n Pay to honour and recognise the cultural, academic and sporting heroes and their
teachers within South African schools. Chapman High has a consistent high matric pass rate. They achieved 93.4% in 2011, better than the 92% of the previous year, thus becoming the top school in the Northern Areas for the last two years. The school is adminstratively sound and in a stable condition with a disciplined environment. “The Pick n Pay Captains and Achievers Club encourages kids to stand up for their achievements taking their place alongside South Africa’s great captains and achievers,” said Koumpan. Former EP Youth, SA U-19 and Warriors coach Domingo started the week in East London, passed through the Bay and proceeded to George in their national tour to identify “kids who make a difference.”

Huge boost for mayor’s uniform collection drive PE EXPRESS REPORTER THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s uniform collection drive received a boost last week with donations from the Boardwalk, Schaeffler SA and Property Group Uitenhage/Despatch. The Boardwalk gave R10 000, Schaeffler SA donated R10 000 worth of school clothing and shoes and the Property Group Uitenhage/ Despatch also contributed uniforms and school shoes. This brings the donations received so far to almost R65 000 in cash bringing them nearer to the
goal to give at least 10 000 learners school shoes. This goal is still a drop in the ocean as the need is much greater. Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Zanoxolo Wayile together with business leaders have in the past two Saturdays begged with bare feet for school shoes and uniforms at shopping centres. Ms Bongi Siwisa, Chairperson of Emfuleni Resorts, said the uniform drive is a very important initiative by the Executive Mayor. “I believe that the campaign being run by the Local Government is the right platform to spearhead something of this nature, and as po-
Eduplant is looking for schools to grow their own food EduPlant, a very successful food gardening programme that teaches schools and communities how to sustainably grow their own food, is inviting schools to take part in a series of permaculture training workshops across the country in support of food security in SA Starting this week EduPlant, will be rolling out 45 workshops across all nine provinces. The Port Elizabeth workshop will take place on February 9 at the Ethel Valentine Hall in Port Elizabeth. The workshop will teach participants permaculture gardening methods as a viable means of addressing food security in South Africa. EduPlant is the South African schools’ food gardening and greening programme and competition that was started by national greening and food gardening social enterprise Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA) in 1994. It has now developed into one of the most effective national school programmes in the country. “Permaculture is now seen by many schools to be a definite way forward for food security and improved natural resource use and management. It has given hope to many for a brighter and more sustainable future,” says Joanne Carty, EduPlant Programme Manager. The programme encourages youth to live in harmony with the environment while reaping the benefits of healthy food and a more eco-conscious lifestyle. The National Department of Basic Education supports the initiative as it means the learners who are fed from the permaculture food gardens are better able to learn. Last year a total of 36 clusters were identified around the country
and up to fifty schools in a vicinity participated in each cluster. A series of six workshops took place at each of these identified clusters. The main themes being covered at these workshops include: Effective garden design and layout; Soil and fertility; Cultivation; Staple food systems; Health, food and nutrition; Plant propagation and seed saving; Integration of trees and Introduction to global warming . During the workshops schools were also provided with plant materials, seeds, trees and educational resources to help to make their permaculture food gardens more sustainable. This year’s workshops will continue until mid-March. They are interactive, fun and provide lots of practical information about starting and growing a permaculture garden. Educators also have the opportunity to interact with each other and exchange ideas about establishing and maintaining their gardens and incorporating these lessons into their teaching. All schools participating in the workshops have the opportunity to enter the EduPlant competition this year. Schools stand the chance of winning great prizes as well as a trip to Gauteng for representatives of the 60 finalist schools in October where they will spend four days in exciting workshops and presentations aimed at broadening their skills before the overall winners are announced. Those interested in having their school grow a permaculture garden and possibly win the competition this year, should visit www.trees.co.za or contact Joanne Carty at 0 011 656 9802/3 for details on the workshops.
litical leaders they must be seen as the drivers of such initiatives in the communities. It also restores public confidence in government. “Having the proper school attire also fits in with discipline, and it is about creating an identity for that learner. We want to be able to make a difference and allow children who don’t have a school uniform or shoes the opportunity to fit in and be happy,” Siwisa added. Ms Charmaine Potgieter, the Rainbow Nation Club Outreach Coordinator of Schaeffler SA, said: “It is always wonderful to be part of such initiatives that empowers the underprivileged. We are proud to be
a part of any upliftment in the community.” The Schaeffler SA group adopted Kwazakhele High School and started with upgrades at the school. Executive Mayor Zanoxolo Wayile, who himself had to walk barefoot for 20 kilometres to school daily, said that nothing can be as noble as to pledge human solidarity and to reach out to the most destitute section of our people. “I want to thank my energetic staff within the institution, as well as the entire Education Task Team, for their hard work and dedication. Without a team effort and passion this project would not have been
this fruitful. “I thank the general public and companies who have contributed; you are all ambassadors of this campaign. “This campaign has managed to unite people from all sectors of society, and crossed the barrier lines of race, culture and political preference. “The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is setting a trend both provincially and nationally, by starting an initiative of this type. We are encouraging all spheres of government to unite and dedicate their commitment to education,” Mayor Wayile said.

ensure that it succeeds. She added that her ultimate aim, working with the Department of Education and the municipality, was to see schools becoming part of the school nutrition programme and that agricultural science becomes one of the careers of choice. “Young people are no longer interested in agriculture. This is a worrying factor. Not all education is in the classroom. We want to make sure that the school produces its own food, and has its own mini-bakery to nourish the bodies, for education cannot continue on empty stomachs,” said MEC Capa, urging the school to ensure that agriculture is included in its curriculum.
A Learnership Programme aimed a teaching learners about agriculture, will soon be started at the school to benefit 15 matric students from the area. Deputy mayor Nancy Sihlwayi urged the school management and the SGB to look well after the gardening implements and use them to ensure there is food to feed learners of the school and its community. “We are so happy. This is like a rebirth. We want to promise the MEC, the Department of Education and the Municipality that we’ll do our best to have food production working. And with this support, our results will surely improve,” said an overjoyed school principal Welcome Baskiti.
MEC for Rural Development and Agrarian Reform Zoleka Capa paid JJR Jolobe High School in Motherwell, Port Elizabeth a visit last week Wednesday as part of her bid to revive agriculture in schools. The school, which is situated in a very impoverished area, is one of eight schools in the province that the MEC has adopted in her capacity as the Member of Parliament Legislature (MPL). In the presence of Members of the Portfolio Committee, Nelson Mandela Bay Deputy mayor Nancy Sihlwayi, Council Speaker Maria Hermans, Mayoral Committee member Chippa Ngcolomba, representatives from the Department of Education, principal Welcome Baskiti, members of the School Governing Body (SGB) parents and members of the community, the MEC donated wheelbarrows, spades, rakes, water tanks, hoes, watering cans as well as seeds and seedlings to the school. “My Department is the department of food. We want to ensure that with these implements, you garden and produce food so that there will never be hunger again in this community,” said MEC Capa. According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu, eight men, three of them armed with firearms entered the Mkaza Meaty Market shop and forced the owner, three customers and two workers at gun-point to lie down while they looted the shop. “They took cigarettes to the value of R30 000, an undisclosed amount of cash, four cellular phones, airtime and the workers’ personal documents,” said Gwavu, adding that the suspects fled the scene in a Toyota Quantum Taxi that was parked in front of the shop. President Zuma’s State of Nation address screened live in KwaNoxolo NCEBA DLADLA Nelson Mandela Bay residents from KwaNoxolo and its neighbouring areas in Port Elizabeth will have an opportunity to watch president Jacob Zuma presenting the State of the Nation address on television at the George Botha Sports Centre from 6pm. His State of the Nation Address, which is to be broadcast nationally live on radio and television from 7pm, provides the President with a platform to communicate with the joint National Assembly in Parliament and with the people of South Africa. The speech, which is largely informed by the annual Cabinet Lekgotla in January, takes stock of the previous year’s achievements and charts a common direction for the country for the coming year. After the live screening, Nelson Mandela Bay Executive mayor Zanoxolo Wayile will address the crowd for 15 minutes to reflect on what the president has said and its implications for municipalities like the Nelson Mandela metro. Then, an expert panel discussion will follow on the president’s address which is expected to focus on government's five key priorities namely: education, health, decent work and sustainable livelihood as
well as the fight against crime. “Residents are encouraged to attend the president’s address so that they understand exactly what government’s plans are,” said Mandela Bay spokesperson, Kupido Baron. President Jacob Zuma will be in Port Elizabeth on Friday, March 16 addressing a business breakfast in Port Elizabeth. The business breakfast briefing will be held at the ETC Conference Centre in Struandale from 7am to 9am. Peter Ndoro of SABC 2 will facilitate the briefing. Umsholozi is expecting the metro’s business leaders and opinion-shapers on various social, economic and political matters in this New Age organised business briefing which costs almost R800 per delegate. Topics that will be addressed include: •What is the President’s view on staying on for a second term? •Is South Africa’s current economic direction viable? •Why are the ANC and government so determined to push ahead with the Protection of Information Bill in the face of such strong criticism? •What opportunities have risen for business in governments job creation mandate? •Does the national government have the capacity to turn around the performance of provinces under administration?

Angels House Kwaito band taking local music by storm SELBY MADIKANE MOTHERWELL band known as Angels House Kwaito Band has vowed to take Nelson Mandela Bay music by storm. The group, made up of four members – Melikhaya Mpangeva aka Mesta, Sakhiwo Nogwaza aka Sakkie, Luyanda Nkwali aka Last Number Ngema Jaha known as Ngema – have been in the music industry for the past 10 years.
Their latest project is the release of the debut album, planned for February 16, entitled “IBhay’ alambathwa” meaning, “Be Careful” in street language. It has eight tracks. According to Mesta, the message of the project is to alert the youth about things that could jeopardise their future. And, they emphasise that the youth should respect other people. “Despite having no funds, we carry on with the business and after all, life is full of challenges,” said Last Number.

When everything else is done before the shoot, the final person to make sure that a TV show is complete – with the presenters, actors and interviewees looking their best – is the diminutive Litha (22). “My job entails powdering out the shine on people who are going to be on television and put up the glam,” said Litha proudly. Litha, who refers to herself as an artist, told PE Express Indaba that she never thought she would one day become a makeup artist for a television station. When the opportunity however knocked at her door after auditioning, Litha took the opportunity with both hands and is now proud that she did. Litha, who liked to draw pictures while at school, decided whe wanted to become a beautician. After passing matric at Brylin High School in William Moffett in 2008 Litha enrolled for a Beauty Course in 2009 and is now qualified with a Diploma. To the youth who aspire to be on TV or like her, working behind the scenes in a powerful medium like television, Litha who is outgoing and very patient with people had this to say: “Know your talents. Finish high school. Have positive thoughts and follow your dreams.”

Female boxing official Nonelwa Fukutwa has seen it all NCEBA DLADLA SOUTH AFRICAN women are making waves as active participants in boxing, not only as boxers, but also as trainers, managers, promoters and ring officials since the advent of democracy. Women’s involvement in the boxing ring was officially legalised in this country in 2001 and only in 2005 women boxers turned professional. But one person who has seen it all is Boxing South Africa (BSA) ring official Nonelwa Fukutwa (43) of KwaZakhele in Port Elizabeth. To date, Fukutwa, aka Noni, prides herself on having officiated in three SA title fights and an equal number of international fights featuring female contestants. This includes about a hundred non-title fights in major and de-
velopment boxing tournaments. Noni was nominated for BSA’s Ring Official of the Year Award in 2010. “I did not win but felt good for being recognised,” she said proudly. Noni’s interest in boxing started in the late 1990s when her brother Xolisani Fukutwa was a useful professional flyweight boxer. “I attended every single one of his fights and ended up loving the sport. So I would go to fights even if he was not fighting. In 1997 I approached the then EP Boxing Commission for a judge’s licence and I was refused because I am a woman,” reminisced Noni who works as an Assopol Client Service Administrator. Noni never quit until she got her opportunity to officiate in fights with other women of South Africa. Her two daughters Thabisa (22) and Xolelwa (18) have also joined the sport as round-girls.

Good Samaritan rescues rugby team SELBY MADIKANE IT was all smiles on the faces of the management and players of Bontle Tigers Ladies Rugby Football Club when a good samaritan lent his helpful hand to them on 27 January. Mike Ndube of Ndube Projects made a generous donation in the form of T-shirts. Ndube said the motive behind sponsoring the Walmer Township girls was to contribute to-
wards women’s empowerment and to appreciate the role made by Tigers’ management. “We want to add value to the community by uplifting the standard of our communities through sport. In fact, sport has the potential to build and unite the nation. Ndube Projects might even adopt this club in future as we are overwhelmed by the way in which this club takes the game of rugby to new heights,” said Ndube.
The visibly excited Bontle Tigers president Nomathemba Gum thanked Ndube and his company for the donation. “I did not expect that someone might do us so proud like Ndube did because our club is still in its infancy stage. I am very happy and this is surely going to boost the morale of our players. We are not going to let Mr Ndube down. What they have done for us, will never be forgotten,” said Nomathemba.
