Metro clinics still healthy says Kupelo NCEBA DLADLA

HE Democratic Alliance (DA) is up in arms with the ruling African National Congress (ANC) to come clean on the future of clinics in Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality which the DA says are facing closure.

He said the province was in the process of taking over primary health services from local municipalities including Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. Taking over the services, Kupe-
lo added, would obviously result in money being owed and his department was in the process of paying that amount. “The MEC (Sicelo Gqobana) has in-
structed the department to do the transfer and we are currently in the process of doing it. We’d like to ensure local residents that their health care is being looked after,” said Kupelo.

But the provincial health department says there is nothing to worry about. According to a statement by the DA’s Shadow Health MEC, John Cupido, the Nelson Mandela Bay metro is owed millions of rand by the Provincial Health Department - an amount which if not paid could result in the clinics closing and patients being denied primary health care. “Since taking over the running of the municipality’s clinics last year, the EC Department of Health (DoH) has had to pay the cost in excess of R90 million, of which R19m has been transferred,” claimed Cupido in the statement. Cupido believes that though it has no budget to do so, the metro is currently footing the bill to run the clinics and is therefore forced to “siphon funds for other votes and projects to keep the clinics open.” “It has come to a stage that if the DoH does not pay at least R52m of the outstanding amount by (last) Friday, all clinics within the metro will effectively be shut down, leaving thousands of patients out in the cold without much needed treatment and medication,” wrote Cupido in the statement. Provincial Health Department spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo has, however, admitted that the province owed the metro some money but he would not be drawn into divulging how much it was. Sangomas called to protect their dignity against ‘Tsotsis’ NCEBA DLADLA MKHULU Masheleni, a sangoma from Whittlesea near Queenstown, was incensed when he read PE Express Indaba’s front-page story last week of a local sangoma who was arrested for allegedly raping a 16-year old girl he was supposed to heal. A member of Traditional Healers Organisation (THO) Masheleni (67) was visiting Ezinyoka in Port Elizabeth last week when he read what he
said “was evil if it was true”. It was reported that the girl, who was believed to be bewitched, was sent to the sangoma’s house in order to be exorcised from evil spirits (amafufunyana). According to the Police, it is alleged that the man instead threatened the girl with supernatural powers and then raped her. The girl escaped from the ordeal and told a relative who later informed the police. According to Police Spokesperson Lt. Col. Priscilla Naidu, the 32 year-old suspect ap-
peared in KwaNobuhle Magistrate Court on Monday and was granted the R1000 bail with certain conditions attached to the bail. “He is to report to KwaNobuhle police station every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday between 8am and 6pm,” said Naidu, adding that the suspect may not interfere with the victim, her family or any other witnesses. The case was remanded to Wednesday 6 June. Masheleni said people have a right to trust an inyanga who claims to have powers to heal.
“The question is, does an inyanga have a right to rape a client? The answer is, no! Healing of patients has nothing to do with sex,” said Masheleni. “Was this sangoma known to this family? Does he have a record of ever healing anyone in the community? Does he belong to any Traditional Healers Organisation and does he have a practising licence? These are questions that come to my mind,” said Masheleni. Masheleni believes izangoma should respect the purity of their an-
cestral calling and not stain it with the dirty work of their hands. What the man is accused of is sexual abuse and deserves punishment by law, if found guilty, he said. Mkhulu Masheleni said he was hoping izangoma would work together to protect their dignity “against tsotsis” who are working to tarnish their good image. “There are people I know in Nelson Mandela Bay who will surely stand up and be counted to protect the ancient art of ubungoma,” said Mkhulu Masheleni.
Foster mother arrested and denied bail for lost Zenixole NCEBA DLADLA THREE people appeared in court for the disappearance of a Port Elizabeth toddler Zenixole Solomon (3). Zenixole of NU6, Makangiso Street in Swartkops Valley went missing last year and her fostermother Xoliswa Mashiqana and two advocates at the High Court, Sandile Baya and Thandile Ngcoza were arrested in connection with the child’s disappearance from her home about eight months ago. Wide police searches have been conducted without success but the latest developments have pointed to the foster mother allegedly being involved in a scam to defraud insurance taken by the toddler’s late mother before she passed on. The three are believed to have taken part in an insurance policy scam
which it is believed, resulted in the little girl’s disappearance. “Three people have been arrested and as I far as I know they have also appeared in court facing charges of fraud and corruption,” said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu. According to a newspaper report in The Herald yesterday (Tuesday) Mashiqana’s bail application was postponed to 21 May whilst the two gentlemen were released on R500 bail each. Gwavu refused to comment further. “The matter is still at a very sensitive stage at the moment. The child has not been found yet. We are busy with investigations and will make an announcement as soon as we finalise our investigation and are able to say where the child is,” said W-O Gwavu.

Captain Beetge has confirmed that the man, whose identity cannot be revealed at this stage, has been “interrogated by the investigating officers” whilst at St Albans prison and the information that they have, he added, suggests that they have the right suspect for the murder. PORT Elizabeth passengers had to wait more than five hours for a bus to Cape Town on Monday evening. The Greyhound Coach which was supposed to leave the city from Greenacres by 9.45 pm actually left at 3.15 am of the following day, causing much anger, frustration and disappointment. Passengers arrived and checkedin at the boarding place 30 minutes before the departure. They claim they received SMSmessages that told them the bus was going to be late; first by an hour, later by half an hour which became five hours. “Dear valued passenger. The Greyhound service from Durban to Cape
Town via Port Elizabeth has been delayed by 3h15min. Please be at the designated stop 30min prior to departure. The delay in service is sincerely regretted, Customer Care,” read another message sent to passengers at 12.07am. KwaZakhele’s Unathi Ndlotyeni (28) was going to miss her 8am appointment at the Correctional Services in Caledon. The bus was supposed to drop her off at 7.25am at her destination. “I am going to miss the interview for an internship. I am worried and concerned because this is my future at stake here,” said a visibly distraught Ndlotyeni. Cape Town’s Eunice Festile (42) who came to PE for a short visit was worried about her 12-year old child who had to miss writing examina-
tions because of the “inefficiency” she did not expect from the luxury coach, she said. Greyhound spokesperson Linda Swanepoel said they regretted what had happened but it was not in their hands. “The coach was originally an hour late because of the roadworks in Kokstad, Mthatha, Butterworth and Peddie. We told the customers. But the second time we told them we would be an hour and a half late was because of a tyre burst that happened 80km before PE,” said Swanepoel. Swanepoel said the late passengers could write a letter of complaint and submit it to their Customer Care Centre. Otherwise, she said, “we can also ask our Supervisor in Cape Town to write a letter explaining why they were late.”

According to Chuene, when tourists visit Port Elizabeth they can be taken to see the Pavilion and other attractions and then be taken to the township to see the Red Location Museum after which they go to have lunch at Jeya’s - that’s the whole package. “Mama Jey (referring to Noxolo) is putting Nelson Mandela Bay on the map. We applaud her,” he added. While NMBT’s task is to
market the city, Chuene said local entrepreneurs and especially SMMEs have to market their businesses and products and Mama Jeya did just that. Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Tourism Acting Director Carleen Arends also commended Noxolo for her love of her job and dedication to her work. “Mama Jeya does not wait for things to happen, she makes them happen. If she does not know something, she asks, and when you tell her to do something, she does it. How I wish other SMMEs can take a leaf out of her book,” said Arends. “We cannot say the sky is the limit for you. There are so many opportunities in the tourism industry. Local artists to stage during Major Music Festival in Bay Stadium NCEBA DLADLA IT is all systems go for the major music festival set to take place at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on 2 June, said Zeranza 299 (Pty) Limited Music Director Andrea Wessels. Featuring International Superstars like R’n B crooner, song-writer and multi-award winning Ne-yo, Shaggy of the Mr Boombastic fame, Ludacris, Proteje, Micasa and Zakes Bantwini to mention but a few, this festival is regarded as a breakthrough by the organisers. But local artists will also get their
moment in the spotlight. Wessels told PE Express Indaba that there would be a second stage for local up-andcoming artists and DJs to take the stage and shine during the festival. “It’s the first of its kind in the Eastern Cape - the province that is usually disregarded in events of such a magnitude,” said Wessels who is still optimistic about drawing 55 000 fans at a cost of between R150 and R550 per ticket which might be reduced if many sponsors come on board. Zeranza has worked with Jamaican-born America Lloyd Stanbury to get the contracts of these major artists signed and Roysten Cloete will be assisted by the Metro Arts and Culture Department to include local art-
ists for the second stage. Speaking during the media launch of the event, Portfolio Councillor on Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Babalwa Lobishe commended Zeranza for the initiative and promised on behalf of the metro municipality to support the festival - through buying tickets. “We appreciate it when service providers come up with such initiatives like this festival without needing any financial support from the municipality. We’ll support the initiative by buying tickets to attend the festival,” said Cllr. Lobishe, adding that through this mega festival, Nelson Mandela Bay will receive exposure as a tourist destination.

I would do it again,” he said. Star grew up in KwaNonkcampa near King William’s Town and got his nickname because he was always ahead of the rest academically. He always wanted to be involved with radio because he loves radio and music. His studies for a Diploma in Music Engineering, helped Star to discover that there is more to music than just singing. Former Baby Champ Jacobs knocked out (KO’d) Eastern Cape Super Middleweight Champion Leon Mriba of Port Elizabeth in the fourth round of their 10-round scheduled bout at Mzamomhle Community Hall in Kirkwood last week. Coming to the fight, fans expected fireworks after Mriba surprised the former amateur star by stopping him in the first round of their scheduled six-round bout almost a year ago. Jacobs was already approved to fight for the South African Supermiddleweight championship at the time. Tipping the scale at 82 kg, an over-
weight Jacobs could not make the 76,2 kg weight-limit set for Mriba’s title. The fight was therefore changed to catchweight - non-title fight. Though he was KO’d, Mriba remains the champion. “It’s been a long time since Jacobs fought after suffering that shocking KO defeat to Mriba about a year ago. He was huge! It seems he was not training during that long lay-off. Jacobs must train hard and drop the weight because he’s got talent and skill. The heavier divisions will be too strong for him,” said Mapitiza, who praised Jacobs’ trainer and father Aaron for being a knowledgeable trainer. “I struggled against Mriba because I suffered with the weight loss (from 89 kgs). I think I’ll have to settle for 79 kg limit - where I’ll be comfortable,” said Jacobs. “We lost against a heavyweight. That’s all I can say,” said Mriba’s trainer Mzwandile Sidina after the fight.

Record turnout at Spar Women’s Challenge PORT Elizabeth’s beachfront was a sea of orange as a record 12 200 runners set off in the 19th annual SPAR Women’s Challenge from King’s Beach on Saturday morning. While most of the participants – ranging in ages from nine to 90 – took to the streets in the name of fun and charity, there was also some serious racing at the head of affairs. Rene Kalmer, who will be representing South Africa in the marathon at the Olympic Games in London this year, clinched the 10km title, while 13-year-old Simone Weitz, from Johannesburg, took home the 5km crown. Adding to the festive atmosphere was the throng of male participants in the 5km, all in varying degrees of drag. The main event, the second in SPAR’s fiverace national Grand Prix series, was more serious with two Olympic marathon qualifiers in Kalmer and team-mate Irvette van Blerk getting off to a fast start. Kalmer, racing in the colours of Nedbank Running Club Central Gauteng, built up an early lead, which she maintained throughout to win comfortably in 33:30.
Zintle Xiniwe, from Mr Price Western Province, was runner-up in 34.01 with Van Blerk completing the podium in 34.15. Having picked up a hamstring niggle while training, Kalmer called her win “a miracle”. “I haven’t been able to train all week, and even thought of pulling out.” Van Blerk, who was coming down with flu, said she had “tired legs”. “It wasn’t one of my greatest races, but I’m happy with third.” While Kalmer always loves running in the Friendly City, Van Blerk was still getting to grips with the wind, which had picked up during the 10km. Sonja Laxton, completing her 74th Women’s Challenge race, snapped up the grandmaster’s title. Comrades gold medallist Grace de Oliviera won the masters’ category. As the high school with the most entries, Lawson Brown received a Core Technologies laptop. Lorraine Primary School and St George’s Hospital each received R2 500 as the primary school and company with the most participants.

According to Viviers, a new club Khangelani joined the competition and that participation now included children younger than 11 years of age. New lease of life for Stadium HELGA VAN STAADEN

HE Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium received a new lease of life last week.
Not only did the stadium operators, Access Management, receive the green light on Friday from the municipality’s sport, recreation and culture committee for the renewal of its lease, but it was also announced that the Metro will be one of the four host cities for the 2013 Afcon soccer tournament. In addition, Die Burger reported on Monday that rumours abound that the PSL team Maritzburg United is considering moving its home stadium from the Harry Gwala sta-
dium in Pietermaritzburg to the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, if not on a permanent basis, for at least more than the three matches which have already been played in PE this season. Concern was expressed recently about the Metro’s delay in renewing Access Management’s lease, which expires end of June and the effect this will have on the EP Kings Super 15 bid. But on the same day that Access Management received the green light from the Metro, also came the announcement by Fikile Mbalula, Minister of sport and recreation, that the Afcon Cup matches will be played in Mbombela, Port Elizabeth, Durban and Rustenburg. Although the number of games
that will be played here will only be announced at a later stage, confirmation has been given that four soccer teams will be accommodated in the city. Kevin Hustler, CEO of the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber, on Friday congratulated the metro on its successful bid to be a host city for the 2013 Afcon Cup. “The announcement by the Minister of sport and recreation shows the confidence of the sporting fraternity in the capabilities of our city, to host international sporting events of this magnitude,” said Hustler. “Our beautiful city and our world-class stadium will once again have the opportunity to be showcased to the world.

This long-awaited clash between these two ZAFA big guns pulled hundreds of supporters. Youngers are
the SAFA NMB SAB Regional League log-leaders while Ghetto Eleven are the ZAFA Premier League current log-leaders. In the semi-finals Ghetto Eleven overcame Juventus FC 2-1 with Youngers edging out Continental Express 2-0. In the finals both sides played their hearts out.
