Five suspects, one bystander die in hail of bullets NCEBA DLADLA

FIVE robbery suspects and one innocent bystander died during crossfire between members of the SA Police and 13 suspects ambushing a security vehicle in Burman Road, Deal Party yesterday. Two suspects were seriously injured while the other two were arrested uninjured. Police spokesperson Brig. Marinda Mills reported yesterday that at about 11am, the 13 suspects, travelling in three vehicles, a blue Bantam, White Toyota Hilux and

White Polo, opened fire on a security vehicle transporting metals from the Port Elizabeth Airport to a business in Deal Party. Members of the Police responded quickly and returned fire, killing five males. The injured suspects were taken to Livingstone Hospital where they are receiving treatment under police guard. Two innocent bystanders were caught in the crossfire and one male died on the scene while the other was injured and rushed to Livingstone hospital. Riaan Marais of Die Burger reported that Daniell Claasen, foreman

at Volvo Trucks in Burman Road was busy testing a vehicle when he was almost caught in the crossfire. “I was driving in Burman Road when people jumped in front of the vehicle and told me to stop. Fortunately I was right next to our premises and could turn in there,” said Claasen. “I was hardly inside when I heard shots being fired. Some of our employees saw the armed men in the street with the police close on their heels. We hid in the workshops. There were a great number of shots fired. According to Brig. Mills, Police re-

covered two of the vehicles used by the suspects. The white Polo is suspected to have been stolen in Algoa Park this September. Police also recovered two R5 rifles and three 9 mm pistols. The blue Bantam bakkie was later found abandoned in Swartkops. Meanwhile, Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lt. General Celiwe Binta congratulated the SAPS Crime Intelligence and National Intervention Unit (NIU) for a job well done in foiling the attack. “We need to stop crime from happening in the first place, and this is exactly what the SAPS did today (yesterday),” said Lt. General Binta.

Kwazakhele residents finally counted SNCEBA DLADLA

KwaZakhele resident Nomsimelelo Kwetana is making a point while a patient Statistician General Pali Lehohla (right) and other officials are listening attentively. Photo: Werner Hills

IT took a lot of pleading and bowing down from Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) Chief Director Pali Lehohla on Monday to change the stance of Kwazakhele residents who refused to be counted by Stats SA officials until their demands for houses and electricity were met. But after long discussions and much persuasion by Stats SA, they agreed to be counted. “They agreed on condition that Stats SA withdraw enumerators in the area and bring external ones,” said Stats SA Media Liaison Officer Sivuyile Mangxamba late on Monday. The community of Qaqawuli Squatter camp in Ward 16 of Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality sang and toy toyed while demanding that Stats SA address them in a dilapidated hall near their houses or leave them alone. The residents said they had lost faith in their councillor Xola Sabani and Exec-

utive Mayor Zanoxolo Wayile and that they were not going to take part in the census unless president Jacob Zuma came to address them himself. Community members claimed that they had never seen development in their area since they settled there. “There has been no service delivery in this area since 1987 when we came to settle here. We want proper houses. We want water and electricity. Our grandparents and parents are dying hoping to see the change that never comes. This we told our committee but it (the committee) is now changing tune. Down with them - asibafuni (we don’t want them),” said a resident Nomsimelelo Kwetana. Another resident, Khayalethu Ngcai, said they were counted in 1996 as well as 2001 but never saw change. “We don’t have a problem with Stats SA. We want to be counted. We’ll be counted and can even count ourselves - without pay. It is only that we have lost faith in Councillor Xola Sabani and mayor Wayile.

They came to us only before elections and never came back. Now we ask you to go to president Zuma and say we are desperate for help. It is either that or we won’t be part of this census circus,” said Ngcai. A committee member, Simphiwe Mketile, denied allegations that they were sell-outs. He said they took the original stance before Census 2011 started in earnest only to be convinced later that Stats SA is not involved in service delivery - but is collecting the data in order to assist government and other agents of change with information. “We accepted that Census continue. And Stats SA bought us a loudhailer (with speakers) which we used to call residents into a meeting where we asked them to allow counting to continue,” said Mketile. Stats SA coordinator Nobuntu Mpetsheni said that when this community complained the enumerators were not from their area while they were being ravaged by unemployment and poverty, Stats SA decided to train 30 local residents who joined their employ at R600 per person. .

OR more than three years Wessel Jordaan has been making music for patrons at the Boardwalk Complex next to Hobie Beach.

Wessel depends on these patrons – and his voice – to put food on the table, as this is his only income. So every morning he leaves his home in Arcadia and heads to Hobie Beach, where he sits in front of the KFC, plucks his guitar’s strings and sings from his heart – with the ocean as his background. But Wessel’s luck has changed and soon his regular spot will be empty when he heads for the City of Gold, Johannesburg, to share his talent with the rest of the country. He has been offered the opportunity of a lifetime – to be the opening act for Nkiyase Mondlana, well-known kwaito, Afropop, house and Afro-jazz artist, on her upcoming tour, Weekend Night Jazz With Nkiyase. The tour starts on November 20 and runs until January next year, visiting different towns around South Africa. “This is a dream come true and an amazing feeling knowing that I will be performing on a stage in front of lots of people. I still can’t believe it,” Wessel said with a

huge smile on his face. He was discovered by Nkiyase herself recently, when she was grabbing a bite to eat at one of the restaurants at the Boardwalk Complex. She was in the Eastern Cape to promote her tour. According to Mongezi Chirwa, Public Relations Officer at Monyetla Communications and Events, which represents Nkiyase, the rest of the team then joined Nkiyase to listen to Wessel perform. “We saw potential in the guy and we decided we wanted to give him a chance, so we asked him whether he would like to open for Nkiyase on her upcoming tour,” Chirwa explained. Wessel, who was a bit sceptical in the beginning, was beside himself with joy and agreed to go to Johannesburg to meet up with the team from Monyetla and get ready for the tour. He leaves for Johannesburg this week. Chirwa also explained that if Wessel did well on the tour and the public showed a liking for him, Monyetla could add him as one of their clients. And there might just be an album on the cards for Wessel as well. In the meantime, Wessel is asking for help from the Port Elizabeth public in the form of clothing. “I don’t have many nice clothes and I can’t go on stage not looking presentable,” Wessel pleaded. Phone him on 0078 547 9348 if you can help.

Financial knowhow training for Mandela Bay residents NCEBA DLADLA THE importance of knowing how to handle finance was explained to Nelson Mandela Bay residents during the financial literacy workshops organised by Liberty Group in conjunction with Small Enterprise Development Agency (Seda), last week as part of the former’s commitment to social responsibility . The workshops, targeting Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) candidates and social grants recipients, were held at Kwazakhele Day Hospital in Mavuso Street, Kwazakhele on Monday, Tuesday and Friday and at the Starport Building in Govan Mbeki Avenue on Wednesday and Thursday to benefit cooperatives. Basic financial knowledge and tools were used to teach those who were previously excluded from the financial and banking sector, through a series of activities that helped them grasp the importance of knowing that business needs money - cash-flow to survive, said Seda Information Officer Yoliswa Xundu.

The importance of saving more rather than spending more was emphasised in the workshops. Xundu believes from the interaction, questions and answers that came after the workshops, they can safely say, people were satisfied. According to Xundu, the attendees showed interest in knowing how to handle finance but whether they are disciplined enough to put that knowledge to good use depends entirely on them. “Knowledge is one thing of course, and applying it is another,” Xundu told PE Express Indaba. Xundu said Seda welcomes people who have business ideas and those who are already operating but want to grow their businesses. “People already in business and those who want to start their small business operations come to our offices for assistance. Through our Business Advisor we first conduct an assessment to see the strength and weaknesses from which a recommendation is made to ensure the viability of the business,” said Xundu, adding that they were happy to work with Liberty Group that helped ordinary South Africans make informed decisions on the basic financial planning principles.

Ben Nyathi toddlers graduate NCEBA DLADLA SCHOOLS should introduce interesting things like extra-mural activities and graduation ceremonies to keep children in school, said Education Department District Director Dr Nyathi Ntsiko. Speaking at Ben Nyathi Primary School’s Grade R graduation ceremony and prize-giving held at Nangoza Jebe Community Hall in New Brighton last Wednesday, Dr Ntsiko thanked the teachers and parents of this school from Maqubela Street in KwaZakhele for giving their children “a good foundation.” “It is a good foundation that helps people to become what they desire in life. All of us, who are wearing academic regalia today, are a result of a good foundation that was laid,” said Dr Ntsiko. A product of Cowan High School in New Brighton, Dr Ntsiko, who holds Masters and PhD Degrees in Maths and Science, asked the gathering that included staff, members of the School Governing Body (SGB), parents and invited guests to take note of what happens in the life of a growing child. “They (children) face so many chal-

lenges as many things happen in their lives. Some fall by the wayside and never continue with education to pass matric and beyond,” said Dr Ntsiko. “While children have rights, parents and teachers should teach them responsibilities too. Teach them the golden rule - do unto others, as you would have them done unto you,” said Dr Ntsiko. He said parents should not discourage children who want an education. While lack of facilities is sometimes an impediment, people putting their hearts into something were more

likely to achieve it. Dr Ntsiko said people should stop retiring at 21, 26 or 35 years - when they graduate from university. Instead, he said, they must find it in their heart to study further to achieve more in life. School principal Mazotsho Dukwe, who was praised for his vision and good leadership, said it was incumbent upon the school to ensure that quality learn-

ing and teaching took place in the school named after a person who was an educationist, philanthropist and defender of the weak and poor. Kids who excelled in drama, debate and sports like rugby, soccer, netball, swimming, hockey and cross country as well as those who were top achievers and most improved in their academic life, were awarded certificates.

Motherwell’s Jimmy needs computer software for the blind

NCEBA DLADLA COMPUTER skills and knowledge are essential these days for anyone no matter what their chosen career or whether they can see or not. “But a computer is useless for the blind without the software known as Jaws,” said Port Elizabeth lad Jimmy Xipula (26) who is blind. Jimmy, who lives in Sobuza Street, Motherwell, teaches braille to assist three other blind people at his home - through a government programme known as Kharikude. Jimmy matriculated from Khanyisa School for the Blind in Port Elizabeth in 2007 and obtained a Computer Certificate at Optima College in Pretoria, a Marketing Management Certificate (N4) and Call Centre Certificate at Pioneer College in Worcester. He is now asking for assist-

ance to obtain the necessary computer software which costs between R13 000 and R14 000. “This is my biggest problem right now. I am asking for assistance – if anyone can buy me this software, my life could be complete,” appealed Jimmy. “This is not only for me. I am going to teach other blind people computer skills so that they are not left in the dark,” said Jimmy. His concerned mom Nozuko (53) said Jimmy, the third of five children was not born blind. According to Nozuko Jimmy first lost his left eye through injury when he was 9-years old. At 12, he lost sight in his right eye too. “I am a single parent who has never been to school. I am unemployed and a cancer sufferer who survives on a social grant. Their father died eight years ago,” said Nozuko. According to his mom, Jimmy is a keen student and thirsty for knowledge. If he knows something, Nozuko said, Jimmy always wants to teach others.

Focus is on form and function with all-new Ford BETTIE GILIOMEE WHEN looking at photos of the good old eighties and the fashion of the decade, I often wonder what people would think of someone going to work or a social event today dressed in what was regarded as high fashion then. Same with cars. When I first saw the beautifully curved backside of the all-new Ford Focus’s predecessor a few years ago, I thought it was extremely sexy. Comparing this to the sporty, athletic yet stylish backside of the all-new Ford Focus, launched in June, one cannot help but be amazed at how one’s taste changes or that one ever could have liked the old shape. The car test-driven for this week’s Express on Wheels from a mom’s taxi perspective, is the new Ford Focus 1.6 Trend 5-door hatch – the Trend being the higher spec model in the range and the Ambiente the lower spec.

Exterior “Kinetic design” is Ford’s name for what it has done to the body of the car. The most recent Fiesta is also an example of this design philosophy. The strong, downward sloping lines in the front, create an impressively aerodynamic body shape, and a big, bold 3-part grille dominates the front. But it is the backside that impresses the most. The hatch models have a sporty rear spoiler to accentuate the look. From the bottom, the back section perks up, while from the roof the back strongly slopes downwards with rounds and angles in all the right places - not too round or too angular - almost like an athlete crouching at the starting blocks.

Interior The new Ford Focus’s designers took the ultra-modern, sporty yet classy look on to the inside. A cockpit-style interior features a stylish centre console wrapped around the driver. But it’s here that I think they went just a tad overboard and it is perhaps too much of a “cockpit” for those that are technically retarded – like me. Being a mom, I am all about practicality and easily-accessible buttons under my fingertips, but the Focus has just too many - which can become a bit confusing if you are not a technically-minded person with pianist fingers and a pilot’s licence. It took me quite a while to get used to where the buttons I need to use most were situated. The steering wheel has two fourway controls. One of them works the sat-nav and audio system, and the other the on-board computer. There

are also buttons on the bottom left of the wheel for the cruise control and on the bottom right for the Bluetooth. I usually like steering-wheel controls, but the controls I use most often, the audio controls and the Bluetooth controls, I found to be difficult to reach and use. Not to mention all the controls on the centre console for the radio and CD player, the phone keypad, another four-way control, a volume wheel and the controls for the airconditioner!

Ride A mom’s taxi these days is often also the family car, so the true test was how the Ford Focus performs on the open road. And for this test the road to and in Port Alfred was chosen - a road full of contrasts - excellent double lanes on some parts and terrible, winding, bumpy roads on other stretches, not to mention pothole

capital Port Alfred. The result: the Focus not only proved to be the ideal city slicker that looks as good as it performs, but a very willing and able performer, no matter what the road demands. It has sufficient power for comfortable overtaking, and a comfortable drive for the whole family. Those in the back have enough leg room and clever storage spaces for their drinks. It corners and grips well, steers and acts quickly on the driver’s commands. It feels sturdy and well connected to the road, while the suspen- Buttons aplenty on the Ford Focus steeringwheel.

Loyal Everton supporter donates soccer kit SELBY MADIKANE IT was smiles all around when loyal Everton supporter, Wonga Qakamfana, recently donated kit to the team at a function in Zwide. The generous donation consists of soccer jerseys, shorts, socks, shin guards, goal keeper gloves and soccer balls. Qakamfana said he was worried about high crime rates, especially among the youth. “I want the youth to be committed to playing sport.

Nowadays there are lots of opportunities for youngsters”. He said he wanted the Zwide youth to refrain from doing crime. “Youth in sport is youth out of court,” said Qakamfana. Everton’s president, Mzikayise Quntu thanked Qakamfana for lending a helping hand to the less fortunate community. He said the kit would most certainly boost the team’s morale. Club secretary, Solomzi Quntu praised ZWIFA and SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay for re-admitting Everton. Zwifa president, Ayanda Magwada commended Qakamfana for his generosity.

Real City beats Red City in SAFA clash SELBY MADIKANE REAL City earned a sweet victory of 1-0 over Red City during their SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay Castle Regional League clash at Motherwell NU9. Both sides gave a good account of themselves, keeping fans on their feet for the largest part of the game. It was Real City’s striker, Sakhile Nkewana who scored the only goal of the game. NCEBA DLADLA BOXING SA Award winning female boxing promoter Gladys “Noforty” Tsenene, head of Rainbow Boxing Promotions is satisfied that the SA Mini-flyweight title fight she promoted at the Raymond Mhlaba Indoor Sports Centre in Motherwell, Port Elizabeth at the weekend was a success, although people of the metro did not support the show. There were few fans who witnessed East London’s Eastern Cape Mini-flyweight champion Siviwe Ntsiko KO 2 defending champion Tsepho Lefele of the Free State who boxes out of Gauteng. In the other bouts, all over four rounds; Mzoxolo Dyani KO’d 1 Wele Mpolongwana; Mzwabantu Dabaza beat Siyabonga Blou on points; Asindiso Mancam beat Thembelani Mbebe on points; Xolani Mcotheli stopped Unathi Nelani TKO 2; Nwabisile Cholani stopped Unathi Stokwe TKO4 and Gcobani Nyathi beat Anelisa Gungqisa on points. Tsenene, who footed the bill out of her pocket (without sponsorship) was hoping the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and the DStv Mbuyekezo Boxing Channel who canned the fight for their TV show will come back to her for support. “We were hoping Nelson Mandela boxing fans would come in droves to support the SA title fight. It was a huge event, I am happy that it was a success but disappointed that people did not come,” said Tsenene.
