Motherwell rugby team honoured INDABA REPORTER

THE Lagunya Rugby Easter tournament in Cape Town doubled as a stirring tribute to the victims of the Motherwell Rugby Club drowning tragedy when an emotional memorial ceremony attended by SARU President Oregan Hoskins rounded off the first day’s matches at the Nyanga Stadium in Cape Town on Friday.

Xolisa Nyembezi, Masixole Myosana, Arthur Peters, Avuyile Tshabalala, Lundi Ramba and Anelisa Mbuzeli lost their lives after being swept out to sea by rip currents at Bluewater Bay following a beach training session on March 24. Despite a 24-10 loss to Langa Rugby Club, the Motherwell Team was named team of the tournament. Hoskins told the crowd, “I was shocked when I heard the news and I’m still shocked. We are all shocked: families, loved ones, the community of Motherwell. But I was amazed when I heard that Motherwell decided not to cancel but to come to this tournament. “Let us celebrate this weekend and this wonderful tournament. Let us enjoy ourselves as the six would have wanted us to enjoy ourselves. But let those who have died never be far from our thoughts.” Lagunya president Titus Kepadisa echoed Hoskins’s comments when he said, “We want to say as Lagunya that in this time of pain and tragedy, we are with you. We are here to celebrate the lives of those who have died. What has happened cannot be undone.” The Lagunya tournament features 16 community clubs, and is being hosted by the club on the occasion of its 20th anniversary.

Memorial service for slain policewoman wounded in the attack, managed to drive to the nearby satellite police station in Zwide. He was rushed to Greenacres hospital where according to police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge, he is still recovering in a stable condition. Captain Beetge would not confirm reports that a suspect has been arrested in connection with the attack on the two police officers. “We are still busy with investigations. That’s all we can say at this stage,” he said. KwaZakhele Community Police Forum Chairperson Mawethu Poni said as the forum they would like to urge community members with information to please come forward. “We believe somebody out there must have heard or seen something. Anyone with information that could assist the police in arresting the culprits should please come forward,” said Poni.

NCEBA DLADLA THE memorial service of the slain police constable Thandiswa Bambiso will be held at the Lilian Ngoyi Sports Centre in KwaZakhele today (Wednesday) from 10am with the funeral taking place at the Peter Rademeyer Community Hall in Algoa Park on Saturday 14 April. “OUR actions and operations to ensure a safe Easter long weekend were very successful and yielded results,” said Lt General Celiwe Binta earlier today. According to Lt-General Binta, concentrating on hot spots and illegal shebeens was a tactic which headed good results and there was a decrease in the number of murder, assault, rape and common robbery cases in Mthatha, East London, Mdantsane and the Port Elizabeth metro area. During the Easter long weekend, no incidents of bank robberies, cash in transit robberies and ATM blasts were reported. More than 2 000 arrests were executed for crimes ranging from murder, robbery, rape, common assault, driving under the influence, motor vehicle theft, drug related crimes, burglaries to name but a few.

More than 200 roadblocks were held and police confiscated close to 130 kilograms of dagga and goods to the value of R750 000. The proliferation of firearms is an operational priority and 50 firearms were confiscated. As a preventative measure 180 knives were confiscated, which are commonly used in incidents of street mugging and robbery, when personal items are taken by the scoundrels. “We must thank our communities for working with us and supporting our endeavours in the fight against crime. “Sincere gratitude is also extended to each and every police member and reservist, who worked over the long weekend and forfeited family time and rest days, to ensure that our communities are safe and free to enjoy this period, Lt General Binta concluded.”

NCEBA DLADLA THE collaboration between Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and the Eastern Cape Social Development Department will continue to make a difference in the lives of school going children, said Municipal spokesperson Kupido Baron. Speaking to PE Express Indaba just over a week after the Social Development Department, the Special Programmes and the metro municipality handed over school bags filled with brand-new school uniforms to identified children - about 191 from Port

Elizabeth and 90 from Uitenhage, Baron said government will always be there where children have a need to be dressed properly. MEC Pemmy Majodina warmed the hearts of 57 children from Qaphelani High School, 20 from Ben Sinuka Primary, 26 from Jarvis Gqamlana, 53 from Charles Duna Primary and 35 from David Vuku Primary School before handing over 90 to Uitenhage children just before the Easter weekend, according to Baron. “A nation that does not value its youth does not deserve a brighter future. There is no need to have a lost generation

as long as we continue to implement programmes to develop the youth,” said Mandela bay Executive mayor Zanoxolo Wayile at the hand-over event which was held at the Sizwe Cecil Kapi Hall in New Brighton. MEC Majodina said she had earlier made a commitment to come back to the metro and hand over the uniforms to the VIPs - the children – and was delighted that she had kept her word to do just that. Meanwhile, Baron said Nelson Mandela Bay had targeted 10 000 shoes to deliver to needy children and was happy to announce that “we’ve got quite a lot already” and will deliver again soon.

This autumn, Hennessy Cognac presents Hennessy Remixed – a showcase of Hennessy mixability through a phenomenal music tour and four top DJs will be igniting crowds at Diamonds in PE on April 21. DJs SPHEtacula, Naves, Lulo Café and Cndo have been invited to headline the Hennessy Remixed Tour with performances around the country, each artist mixing his or her own unique beats alongside the signature flavours of Ginger, Apple, Soda and Tonic – a distinctive taste for every occasion. Hennessy Remixed will see the four DJs playing at six events around South Africa, kicking off with Solly’s Tavern in Cape Town, moving on to Sedibeng in Soweto, Cubana in Bloemfontein, Diamonds in PE, Max’s Lifestyle in UmLazi and finishing at Jack Budha in Pretoria. “The notion of mixing Cognac is not something new; in fact, from as early as the 16th century the product has been consumed with water. Cognac was also often the spirit of choice for cocktails during the 19th century, when discerning gentlemen wanted something of quality,” commented Avukile Mabombo, Hennessy Cognac SA Brand Manager. “Hennessy Remixed will highlight Hennessy VS, a young, vigorous cognac with versatility that can be enjoyed neat but also lends itself to mixing with flavours that still allow its character to stand out.” For further information on the tour, join the Facebook page at Facebook.com/HennessySA and follow on Twitter: @HennessySA.

because it sounded cool,” said Thandeka. The name has since stuck as many music lovers associate her with it and her music. She grew up in Elalini listening, through her father’s influence, to the sounds of Ella Fitzgerald, Roberta Flack and Stevie Wonder. Thandeka will be remembered as part of the Black Slaves band which took the country by storm in the past 12 to 15 years touring the country as well as Swaziland, Lesothu and Namibia. The band was unfortunately disbanded after she joined the Civil Aviation’s Client Services as an employee in Pretoria and later moved to Midrand

“But I have been back in PE since 2009 and I have revived my singing career and have lodged a very serious comeback,” she said. She selects talented local freelance musicians to accompany her in her shows and events. Depending on the clients’ needs and the mood, they do soul, jazz, cabaret, gospel and hip hop, said Tandeka. Asked if an album was coming soon, she laughed and said: “We are working on something; and will let you know about it soon.” Thandeka likes the sounds of Thandiswa Mazwai, Judith Sephuma (her voice and style) and would like work with PE born Zonke Dikana and her sister Lulu.
