Motherwell armed robbery and murder suspects sought NCEBA DLADLA THE South African Police Services in Motherwell are looking for two suspects in connection with an armed robbery and murder. According to Motherwell police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu, the two unknown suspects allegedly entered the Somalian shop in Skwatsha Street, NU8 Motherwell on Sunday 24 June at about 20:05 and pretended

to be customers. The two allegedly drew a firearm and robbed the Somalian shopkeeper of an undisclosed amount of cash. They then fired a gunshot as the victim was trying to run away. He died on the spot. “Anyone with information that can assist the police should contact Warrant Officer Jonck of Motherwell Detectives at 0 041 405 6521 or 0 084 810 9078,” Warrant Officer Gwavu said.

THE South African Police Service (SAPS) are looking for two unknown thugs who bombed an FNB Auto-Teller Machine (ATM) in Motherwell. Motherwell police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu said the two suspects were involved in the bombing of the FNB ATM at a Caltex Garage in Weza

SOUTH Africa’s multi-award winning actor and director, Sello Maake-KaNcube, was in Port Elizabeth last week to speak to Lebo Mathosa’s biological mother Judy Peter. KaNcube, is currently directing a theatre play The Drama Queen – a Lebo Mathosa Tribute commissioned by the State Theatre about the life and music of the late Mathosa who died in a car accident in 2006. Ka Ncube, a former Soapie Generations hearthrob, visited PE after performing at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, in the production “Race” penned by American David Mamet. Ka Ncube said it was an honour for

him to pay tribute to the inimitable Mathosa who came to fame with the group Boomshaka in the 1990s. When she died, the country learnt that her biological mother was actually Judy Peter from Motherwell in Port Elizabeth. “I came here to see Judy. It was only fitting that I meet her in person having spoken to her a number of times on the phone,” said Ka Ncube. Ka Ncube admitted, however, that he would do the same thing had Mrs Mathosa - who raised Lebo in Johannesburg – still been alive. According to KaNcube, on meeting Judy he immediately saw the resemblance between her and Lebo. He said his first contact with Lebo was in an Arena in Hillbrow in the 1990s “where Lebo was dancing like mad. Since then, I have watched her sing, listened to her interviews and

seen something special in her,” said KaNcube. In Lebo, alias the Drama-Queen, Ka Ncube saw a three-dimensional being. “One with this humility and respect, the other one being the inyour face Lebo who would tell it like it is; and the third side was an artist and performer who would blow you away”. Ka Ncube is hoping to raise enough funds to take Judy to the opening of the show in Jozi on 14 August. He said the country should still await the whole musical theatre and later a musical film on the life of Lebo. “I am so happy. I am getting the recognition at last. My daughter should be happy where she is. I am giving this production by Sello (Maake ka Ncube) all my blessings,” said an overjoyed Judy.

Bantu Church of Christ cleans up for Mandela and the youth NCEBA DLADLA NEW Brighton’s Bantu Church of Christ was joined by Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in the church’s 20years Youth Anniversary which it combined with the 67-minutes for Mandela Campaign in honour of the icon of freedom and democracy, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela last week. The church and the Public Health Directorate headed by Reverend Dr. Mamisa Chabula-Nxiweni joined hands in an Environmental Awareness Clean-up and Educational campaign. They started at Limba Street (named after Bishop James Ngcanjini Limba who founded the church in 1914) and followed the route to the historical Emlotheni Memorial Park on Friday. A tree was also planted in the church yard at Limba Street to show the significance of the day. The event was also supported by the Education Task Team in the office of the Executive Mayor, Zanoxolo Wayile. “We are celebrating our youth’s 20th anniversary by teaching our youth to be re-

sponsible citizens with humility and respect,” said the Church’s Bishop John Bolana. Utata, as Bishop Bolana is known, mentioned the problems, like drugs and alcohol abuse, facing the youth of today as some of the challenges the church should address “to show the youth that they need God in their lives in order to live well in the land.” According to Bishop Bolana, Bantu Church of Christ’s youth have been at the forefront of the struggle for change through education and music, mentioning gospel stars like Lundi Tyamara, Andile B and Thembinkosi Booi as coming from the Bantu Church of Christ’s ranks. The church gives the youth an opportunity to lead services in this month of June - in honour of the Youth who died for the liberation of South Africa. “SABC Radio presenters gave a talk on working as a broadcaster, university administrators gave talks as well as NYDA and SEDA representatives. It was a highly educational and informative week,” said one of Youth Organisers Prince Charles. “This is a very significant event under Utata’s leadership which will remain for generations to come,” said Rev. Dr Chabula-Nxiweni.

The 15-track album recorded at Studio23 and produced by Mthatha-born and Joburgbased Pastor M-Siya, who owns the studio, is receiving a lot of air-play on national radio. Worship songs like Uyingcwele, the titletrack, Mayenzeke and Ithemba Lam are good songs to listen to and the whole album carries

Pier 14 shoppers give life PE EXPRESS REPORTER PIER 14 Shopping Centre in Port Elizabeth played host to the final blood drive of National Blood Donor Month last week, under the theme “Every blood donor is a hero”. The drive saw 74 potential donors come forward, which resulted in 52 successful donations and exceeded the South African National Blood Service’s target of 50 units. SANBS public relations practitioner Nina van Wyk said what made the blood drive more remarkable was the fact that over 50 percent of participants were first-time donors. “Our hope is that they can now be recruited for future blood drives and become regular donors.” According to Van Wyk, the Eastern Cape branch of the SANBS required 3 725 units per month to meet the existing need. “Currently, we are experiencing a blood short-

WHEN Vuyelwa Qashani and her friends opened up their hearts to help the youth of Motherwell cope with life’s challenges, little did they know that their efforts are being noticed and appeciated by the elderly too in the community. Qashani and her friends launched Lukhanyolwethu Community Development Project at the Wesley Church in Mntanezulu Street, NU11 Motherwell last Saturday and saw how relevant their project really is. “We had organised food, toys and clothing to benefit needy children belonging to Lukhanyo Pre-school - a foundation phase of our big dream - a Youth Community Centre Project we’re launching,” said Qashani. She added that as she was distributing the clothing, toys and food to the needy children, it became apparent that the elderly who were present also needed the food as hunger and starvation knows no age. “I was excited to make it possible for the gogos to receive something. They too left with toys for their grandchildren. Every one of us has something to share, let us share what we have to make this a better

Pops Foundation thanks supporters for helping it support the needy NCEBA DLADLA PEOPLE Opposing Poverty in Society (POPS) Foundation members, a registered non-profit making organisation (NPO) will always go out of its way to ensure that poor and needy members of the community get their basic needs fulfilled, like clothing and food during the winter season. Pops Foundation members and volunteers in association with Bay FM 107,9 pursued a joint venture and ran a Winter Drive which started on Tuesday, May 8 and ran until Friday 22 June. They distributed blankets, warm clothing, food parcels and meals to the needy families from the

impoverished areas in Extension 6 Malabar and Veeplaas. “The whole idea of the Winter Drive Initiative was to bring warmth and nourishment to the extremely poor families living in shacks,” said Pops Director Mureedah Botha, adding that as part of the Winter Drive they were also able to reach out to offer assistance to a family from Extension 28 in Bloemendal. The family had lost their home in a fire that destroyed everything recently. Botha said more distributions are planned for this week. “We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation for all the amazing support we continue to get while we are trying to help the needy in our communities,” said Botha.

Indaba Ezemidlalo Volkswagen Rally fever

T

HERE are just two days left before the highly anticipated 30th running of the annual Volkswagen Rally on Friday and Saturday, which will see the the cream of South Africa’s rally fraternity in action on a combination of tar and gravel stages. The event, round number four on the 2012 South African national rally calendar, is shaping up to be an intense battle between the top five competitors in the S2000 class. Just ten points separate these first five teams which consist of Ford, Toyota and Volkswagen entries, making it a tough three-way battle that will take place in the Eastern Cape. With nearly 200 km of competition distance and 12 stages of rallying that will take place on both gravel and tar, the rally competitors are going to have to keep their wits about them. Competitors in the 2012 Volkswagen Rally will make the traditional Auto Pavilion start outside of the main gate of the Volkswagen plant in Uitenhage where the public will enjoy free entry to the museum for the day. This is also a good time for rally fans to meet their favourite rally competitors and take the opportunity

to collect autographs and take a few photos of their motorsport heroes. “The Volkswagen Rally is one of the best rallies on the national calendar,” said Mike Rowe, head of Volkswagen Motorsport. “It is well organised and run by the Algoa Rally Association and route organiser, Joe Fourie, who celebrates his 21st Volkswagen Rally with us this year. There is a dedicated team of enthusiasts who ensure the event is as good as it could possibly be and this shows in the organisation.” Competitors will be contesting stages in Gamtoos, the Longmore Forest, Uitenhage and the Port Elizabeth Oval Track Raceway (PEOTR) in Greenbushes, and will also contest the very popular Kings Beach spectator stage which is the traditional grand finale. “This year promises to be a very good event,” said route organiser Joe Fourie. “Good rains in the area have significantly reduced the fire risk in the Longmore Forest; the roads are in good condition and there are even a couple of new stages as well. We’re all anticipating that the 30th running of the Volkswagen Rally is going to be one of the best we’ve had.” Competitors in the Volkswagen Rally will face one of the two new stages right at the start of the event when they head to Melon in the Gamtoos area. Here Fourie has indicated

that the field will face a challenging, but extremely good first stage. “That first stage hasn’t been used for many years,” said Fourie. “It is a good distance, at 10.5 km long, but the competitors will find themselves in competition on a stage that would do a round of the WRC (World Rally Championship) proud.” Five stages await the Volkswagen Rally competitors on Friday, with a further seven scheduled for Saturday – of which three will be duplicated from day one of the rally. The focus for the event is on providing a challenging rally for competitors while retaining the high level of spectator-friendliness for which the Volkswagen Rally is known. “Accessibility is a big issue on a rally,” said Fourie. “Getting rally fans to good viewing points while not interfering with the rally itself is a challenge. The popularity of the Volkswagen Rally amongst spectators is legendary and we do everything we can to make it as easy as possible for them to be a part of the action.” Those enthusiasts who cannot travel to follow the route can visit the

PEFA Premiership results

SELBY MADIKANE IT seemed as if Zwide Celtics had a black weekend when their arch-rivals Shining Stars pipped them 1-0 in their Zwide Football Association (ZWIFA) Marina Sea Salt Premiership at Celtics’ grounds on June 30. In another pulsating clash Golden Aces were held 1-1 by Major Chiefs. Strikers United fans asked themselves unanswerable questions when they saw their side losing by 9-0 to Real Crusaders. The reigning champions Young Romans have not been living up to expectations as they keep on losing crucial points of late. Recently they succumbed 2-0 to their neighbours Shining Stars. Morning Stars kept their hopes of staying in the ZWIFA Premier League alive following their 2-1 win over Swartkops United.

These displays will include both static and “laps” of the planned rally stage. The day’s activities at this point will reach their highlight when the national rally field arrives to contest the final stage in spectacular tarmac fashion and this will be followed by the event prizegiving.

It was clear that Callies were the far better team when they thrashed Highbury with a whopping score of 6-1. Warriors had the better of Foresters with a sweet victory of 2-0. Hearts were humiliated 3-1 by Squares. NMMU Madibaz gave a good account of themselves despite their 3-2 loss to high-riding Warriors, who also drubbed Foresters 2-0.

Zwide United couldn’t tame Tigers SELBY MADIKANE

African Bombers secure a good home victory SELBY MADIKANE AFRICAN Bombers played their hearts out to record a 33-19 victory when they took on Kruisfontein in their Eastern Province Rugby Grand Challenge League game at Zwide Stadium on June 30. Bombers kept the visitors in their own territory for almost the entire first stanza of the game. Credit should go to Kruisfontein forwards who defended without committing

silly mistakes in their territory while they were under immense pressure. Before the end of first stanza, Bombers were leading 7-0 following a try scored by Loyiso Poyi which was converted by Masixole Payi. In the second stanza Bombers were 14-0 up in front after their No 10 Coyi Banda scored a try under the poles with Payi converting it. Poyi continued with his outstanding performance when he scored his second converted try to increase Bombers’ lead to 21-0. Within few minutes Poyi registered two quick tries, of which Payi

converted one, to take the score-line to 33-0. Complacency took its toll on the African Bombers leading to Wayde Stuurman scoring the visitors’ first try to reduce the score to 32-5. The visitors were motivated and Neville Geswint also scored a try, which Elano Witbooi converted, to decrease the deficit to 33-12. The last try of the game came courtesy of Christoville Human which Geswint converted to make the final score 33-19. In the Reserves section Bombers thrashed Kruisfontein 32-5.

IT was a bitter pill to swallow for Zwide United fans when their side could not tame Bontle Tigers Ladies Rugby Football Club. Zwide, who wanted to avenge their loss of 5-10 against Tigers in the Mayoral Cup finals in March, were whacked 5-31 by the Tigers during a friendly rugby game at Zwide Stadium on June 30. The home side piled more pressure on to Tigers whose forwards were very resilient and tenacious. But Tigers were not cowards, they took the game to the hosts. Tigers’ No 8 Nozipho Bell made a brilliant run from the centre of the

field and delivered a nifty pass to her skipper Poppy Windvogel who scored an opening try under the poles. Flyhalf Sikelelo Soci converted it to make the score 7-0. Zwide United fought back strongly and their hard work paid dividends, with their prop Nosisa Lizana scoring an unconverted try to decrease the deficit to 5-7. Tigers dominated their counterparts in all departments. Andiswa Tafi scored two tries, with Sikelelo converting one to put Tigers 19-5 up in front. Poppy became Tigers’ heroine of the day as she scored two tries with one try converted by Sikelelo to make the final score 31-5 in favour of Tigers.

FREE STATE SAPS WIN ANNUAL RUGBY TOURNEY IN MANDELA BAY NCEBA DLADLA THE Free State South African Police Service (SAPS) Rugby Football Club (RFC) took home the coveted trophy of the Annual SAPS National Rugby

Week Tournament when they beat Gauteng North 41-10 during the the Gelvandale Stadium, Port Elizabeth last Saturday. The two teams played a good game of rugby as they entertained the crowds but the Free State team proved

to be the team of the moment as they knocked continuously on the scoring line of the team from the north. “Both teams displayed good knowledge of rugby. The fans loved it,” said Port Elizabeth SAPS spokesperson, Warrant Officer Alwin Labans.

Free State had to deal with Eastern Cape A and Western Cape to get to the finals whereas Gauteng North had difficulty getting rid of Eastern Cape B and Limpopo during the knockout stages of the tournament. National Police Commissioner

Mangwashi Riah Phiyega commended the players for being sporting during the day. She gave the winners their trophy and put on medals on the finalists. The National Rugby Week will be held in KwaZulu-Natal at the same time next year.

SELBY MADIKANE WALMER Township community members were proud when four players of their club Bontle Tigers Ladies Rugby Club were selected to play for Eastern Province in the national rugby U-16 tournament that took place in Kimberley from 2 to 7 July 2012. The four girls who donned the jerseys of EP are Nolukholo Mzwali (prop), Nosiphiwo Rameni (lockforward), Abongile Bula (prop) and Lutho Sajini (wing). Before

joining the 26-member squad the four lasses took part in trials that were conducted in Pearston on Youth Day. According to Tigers coach, Mongezi Macwili, the four have the potential to reach the top. “I am extremely happy with these players. They do not have much exposure in the game of rugby, but they are doing wonders as if they have been playing for many years,” explained Mongezi. The visibly excited Tigers President Nomatemba Gum hailed her executive committee, coaches, parents, players and the communi-

ty of Walmer Township for their unwavering support which contributes to the success of their club. “I have noticed that these four players possess phenomenal talent. A bright future lies in front of them. I call these four girls the ambassadors of Walmer Location. Thanks to everyone who made these girls and Tigers LRFC what they are. This includes the parents, my committee, my coaches, the entire team, supporters and the Walmer community at large,” concluded Nomatemba.
