Abandoned baby reunited with family NCEBA DLADLA

P

E Express Indaba often helps social welfare workers to find the parents of abandoned babies through publishing pictures of abandoned children, as is required by law before they can be adopted. But last week, during Child Pro-

tection Week, the peoples’ paper literally went the extra mile to help social worker and children’s rights activist, Pamela Rubushe, and Dora Nginza Hospital locate a 21-year old mother who abandoned a healthy baby girl a day after giving birth to her through Caesarean Section in the hospital. The mother, who also needed medical attention owing to her operation, left the baby on her bed and disappeared.

Rubushe sent out a media statement asking for help to locate the mother on Friday morning. Hospital authorities had discovered at that stage that the mother had registered a false name (Amanda Peter) and a false address in Msengane Street, Zwide. “We went to this address but nobody knew Amanda,” said Rubushe. But after more investigation and checking the identity number she provided, they found out that the number belonged to a woman staying in NU8 Motherwell. PE Express Indaba accompanied Rubushe to the address. Here they found a woman who fit the description provided by the nurses. When the unsuspecting woman saw Rubushe she asked if there was anything wrong. She got suspicious and ran away. This woman’s mother (53), whose identity is withheld to protect the child, was not at the house when her daughter disappeared. She arrived a little later and told Rubushe she and her husband did not know their daughter was pregnant. “She is overweight so we did not know she was pregnant,” said the visibly distraught grandmother. She then went to the hospital to take the child home. According to the grandmother, her daughter has a 5-year old boy in Grade R. She cares about the boy and looks after him well. “I don’t know why she would do such a thing (abandoning the baby). Yes, we would chastise her as her parents, but there is no way we were going to disown her and her baby,” said the grandmother. Rubushe reported the matter to the police. “Abandoning a baby is a criminal offence. I want young women who are having unwanted pregnancies to realise that there are ways to ensure that their babies are placed in a loving home instead of just abandoning the babies,” said Rubushe.

Municipal matters

Opposition accepts budget – conditionally A

DDRESS the R7.8 million lost in electricity theft monthly, cancel sponsoring of soccer teams and other non-essential spending and replace non-core and non-productive employees and political appointments with critically needed staff. These are among the conditions the DA are setting in order for them to support the proposed tariff hikes in the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality’s Draft Budget. The budget has to be approved before June 30 as the hikes will come into effect on July 1. According to the draft budget that has been tabled, residents will have to pay municipal increases of double the inflation rate from July. The proposed increases include 13% for sanitation, property rates and refuse removal, while electricity will increase by 11.03%. According to Leon De Villiers, caucus leader of the DA, they as the official opposition have no option but to accept the proposed increases as “the metro’s finances are in such a sorry state”. “But we are only willing to accept it conditionally. The municipality is spending more than it is bringing in. In the past years the metro has not succeeded in increasing its revenue and therefore the only option it has is to cut costs,” said De Villiers. One of the first conditions set by the DA is that the metro should address the theft of over R47 million in electricity (R7.8 million per month) over a six-month period from July 1 to December 31 last year. “This huge loss was discovered in February already and to date nothing has been done to address this. They expect rate-payers to pay more for electricity but are not

Service increases

doing anything to curb the huge losses,” said De Villiers. Another condition the DA has set is that non-essential spending, such as the sponsorship of soccer teams, sporting events and festivals, must be eliminated. “How will the metro be able to explain to Walmer residents that they have only budgeted R500 000 for the eradication of the bucket system while they pay a team such as Maritzburg United, which is sixth from the bottom of the log, R750 000 per game that is played at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium,” said De Villiers. According to De Villiers, apart from R20 million budgeted in the new budget to attract Maritzburg United to play here, the metro has committed R30 million to host the Afcon Cup. Another condition is the removal of political appointments and the replacement of non-core and non-productive employees. “We need more critical posts to be filled, such as technical support positions in the area of service delivery, and to make sure that people are employed where we critically need them. We must support our infrastructure, such as water and electricity,” said De Villiers. De Villiers said that non-productive staff, especially in the traffic department, must be made productive or replaced.

BETTIE GILIOMEE

BETTIE GILIOMEE THE Nelson Mandela Bay Metro Municipality will from next month implement the IBT (Inclining Block Tariffs) system in charging their domestic users for electricity. This will result in people who use more electricity paying more for a kWh-unit of electricity. According to municipal spokesperson, Kupido Baron, the IBT will be implemented for domestic electricity consumers with both conventional and pre-payment meters as from 1 July 2012.

Those who use only 350kWh per month will pay the existing rate, while those using around 658kWh per month will face an 11% increase. Domestic consumers using 1 000 units a month will see a 21.40% increase in their electricity bill. According to Baron, only 10% of domestic consumers in the Metro are consuming on average more than 660 kWh. “It will be more beneficial for consumers to purchase their monthly consumption instead of buying bulk electricity at a higher tariff,” said Baron.

The impact of the increase on IBT tariff is as follows:

EC to hold Youth Day Celebrations NCEBA DLADLA PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma will be a keynote speaker during the Youth Day Celebrations at the Wolfson stadium in KwaZakhele, Port Elizabeth this Saturday, June 16. The planned visit to the metro by State President Zuma was confirmed by Director of Communications in the Office of the Presidency, Bongani Majola. The President will be accompanied by Minister in the Presidency Collins Chabane, Eastern Cape Premier Noxolo Kiviet and National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) CEO Steven Ngubeni. “President Zuma will be addressing the Youth Day Celebration as part of a National Programme that is held countrywide, said Majola. He added that the commemoration of the role played by the young people of South Africa

on 16 June was rotating countrywide because “it does not belong to Soweto.” According to Majola, the June 16 celebrations were held in Gauteng last year, while they were held in Mpumalanga and the Northern Cape Province respectively in the previous two years. He said the Eastern Cape indicated that they wanted the event to be held in Nelson Mandela Bay this year. The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) will also be playing an active role during these celebrations, according to Majola. This year’s theme for National Youth Day is “Working Together We Can Do More to Build Infrastructure and Fight Youth Unemployment, Poverty and Inequality.” This year marks the 36th anniversary of the 1976 uprisings, and takes place within the context of the third anniversary of the establishment of the NYDA aimed at creating and promoting coordination in youth development matters.

‘Petrol bombs are not about service delivery’ HELGA VAN STAADEN VUYANI Zonke was sleeping when he was woken by petrol bombs being thrown against his home’s windows. Zonke, a community worker involved in housing issues in the area, told last week of his night of fear and terror when four petrol bombs were thrown at his lounge and kitchen windows. Two of the petrol bombs landed outside on the porch. The attack on Zonke’s home, at house 11842 in Chatty 12, on Thursday evening, is one of many in recent times in the Booysen Park Area. This follows on an attack on Thursday afternoon on ward councillor Mbongeni Mungane’s office at the Booysen Park Community Hall where the office was burnt down. Zonke’s personal assistant, Linda Gqamane, was assaulted in the incident and disgruntled residents in the area threatened to necklace her. A petrol bomb was also thrown at Gqamane’s home on May 12, while two other residents’ homes were burnt to the ground and

a third partially damaged. Mungane, councillor for ward 41 (Booysen Park, Jacksonville and Timothy Valley), said earlier that the riots were not about service delivery but rather about political strife. Zonke further described the attack on his home. When he entered his lounge, the curtains were ablaze and the flames had already spread to the ceiling. “I tore down the curtains while my wife, Yoliswa, was getting water to put out the fire. “My children, Achumile (5) and Sibabalwe (10), were severly traumatised and I had to phone my brother to fetch them as they were too scared to stay home,” said Zonke. After the incident he stayed awake the whole night in fear that the culprits would return and some of his neighbours kept him company. “My neighbour saw the group of about 20 people gather in front of my house. After they (the culprits) threw the petrol bombs they ran away in different directions. W-O Alwin Labans, police spokesman, said the police were monitoring the situation in the area. “We will not withdraw from the area until the situation has stabilised”.

ROBINA Anne Kafuko from KwaDwesi has been chosen as one of the 10 finalists for the YOU Miss Teen 2012 pageant. The nationwide search for the girl between the age of 14 and 18 who is talented, actively involved in the community, passionate about being South African, as well as great looking, is well into its second last stage, before the crowning. Kafuko, a grade 10 student from Pearson High School, was ecstatic when she heard she had pulled through to the finals. “I never expected it, because there were so many entrants including my modelling friends from Extreme Models,” she said. It was her teacher from Extreme Models that gave her the headstart to enter. “After she told us about the competition, I bought the magazine and thought ‘why not enter?’. This would be an amazing opportunity for me.” She entered the competition by writing a 250 word essay on why she thought she should win the YOU Miss Teen title. The public then had to vote

for their favourite and based on the voting, 20 finalists were chosen to go further. As to why she thought she should win the title she said, “I am a very motivated and focused person and it will give me a platform to reach out to teenagers that are struggling with everyday life problems such as low self-esteem, bullying, peer pressure, etc. It will help me to reach out to charity organisations and accomplish the things that I want to do.” She lives by the saying “If you don’t hope, you will never find out what’s beyond your hopes”. “That makes me want to take risks and I would like to encourage teenagers to take a risk and not be scared to do what they love to do.” Other than modelling she loves reading. “I am a book worm, but I also play hockey and love to hang out with my friends. I am a normal girl.” Kafuko wants to pursue a career as either a quantity surveyor or a dermatologist once she has completed school. During her free time she volunteers at Isithembiso Children’s Home. “The children have taught me to live life to the fullest, no matter what and not to take things for granted.”

School exams going well in PE NCEBA DLADLA

NELSON Mandela Bay schools’ June exams are running smoothly and learners are upbeat about good results despite concerns over the possibility of the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) in the Eastern Cape finally resorting to industrial action following the failure to come to an agreement with the Department of Education to rehire temporary teachers whose jobs were terminated last year.

EsiXhoseni kukho intetho ethi: “Bagotywa bebatsha”, oko kukuthi, “Fundisa umntwana esemncinane ukuze oko akufundileyo akusebenzise akuba mdala”. Seso sizathu kanye esenze ukuba uNosizwe Telejane, inqununu yasePerseverance Crèche KwaDwesi eBhayi ekunye neetitshala ezingabancedisi bakhe uNomalinge Makiva noPinky Mtsi, bathathe abantwana babo basecrèche babase eBoardwalk Casino and Entertainment World ukuya kubonwabisa ngoLwesine oludlulileyo.

Fabric painting workshops THIS holiday, the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum is offering everyone the chance to turn old clothing into a funky new range for their wardrobe. With a few colours and a suitable brush, fabric painting can give one’s wardrobe and home a brandnew look. It enables one to create unique clothes and also bring life to plain curtains, cushion covers and table cloths. The workshop will start with a tour of the exhibitions on show, which will help participants to get their creative juices flowing. They will then proceed on to painting a unique design on their chosen piece of fabric.

Winter Woolly week is here NCEBA DLADLA THE chilly winter set in properly during the past weekend, and Algoa FM’s Woolly Winter drive this week is just in time to ensure that the less fortunate are kept warm this winter. “Held for the 15th year in succession, Algoa FM’s Winter Woolly Week Campaign, started in earnest this past Monday, June 11 and will continue until Friday this week to fulfil its mission of giving love and warmth to the needy,” said Algoa FM Public Relations and Communications Manager Jennilee Peremore. With the demand growing every year, Peremore said, Algoa FM’s partnership with Community Chest has been joined by Caltex, GMSA, Finro, Jumbo and Nampak as sponsors. “Getting through the day is an uphill battle for so many people in the metro. Algoa FM’s listeners help the Community Chest to provide scarves, gloves, hats and jerseys

to the poor, abused and disabled of our province,” said Colette Theron, Community Chest PRO. Algoa FM presenter Roy Williams, who started the Winter Woolly Project 15 years ago, was also overjoyed by people’s response in support of this good cause. “It never ceases to amaze me how generous and caring the people of the Eastern Cape are,” said Williams. Peremore said collection boxes donated by Nampak for blankets and warm clothing will be placed at all Caltex garages in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro, the Algoa FM studio at the Boardwalk, GMSA dealers and at the Community Chest office at 35 Clyde Street, Central, Port Elizabeth. Algoa FM presenters will also be going out to collect donations. Money collected will go towards Community Chest’s Feeding Programme for the poor in the metro.

THE Golden Oldies Fundraising Club has joined forces with the Algoa Bay Council for the Aged, to arrange and host the first-ever Senior Citizen of the Year awards during 2012. In keeping with the main objective of Algoa Bay Council for the Aged, which is to promote active ageing, nominees must be 70 years or older and still be active in their respective communities. These are senior citizens who make a difference in the lives of others and who go above and beyond in all spheres in their communities. According to Juanita Krauspe, one of the organisers, the main objective of Senior Citizen of the year is to honour older persons

for the active role they still play in their communities. “There are many amazing older persons out there who are doing great things in their communities and not being recognized for it. Since I have sent out the nomination form I have heard of people over the age of 70 who are still so very active that I cannot wait to meet these wonderful people,” said Krauspe. Nominees must be at least 70 years of age on 30 September 2012. Retired politicians and vice-regal officers will be considered for work undertaken in addition to their official duties. Nominations close on 30 June 2012. For more info, contact Krauspe at 0 041 503 4400 or 0 083 263 3200.

The basis of this network is a database and networking structure. The idea is to get charities talking to each other, talking to potential donors and funders, talking to

MBONISELO and Zanoxolo Primary Schools are the 2012 Spur Masidlale Soccer League Champions. The duo were crowned at the NU2 stadium in Motherwell last Wednesday after leading the pack in the grand finale of the boys and girls competitions that has been played since the launch of the

The winners were awarded gold medals and will have an opportunity to be the mascots during one of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) matches to be played at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium in the next season. “Not only that, they will also get VIP treatment when they have lunch at a local Spur on the day of

the match,” said Daniel Serman of Interactive Sport, the company that organised this national event in conjunction with Spur. “I want to congratulate the winners. This is the culmination of an intense league competition by local boys and girls since February,” said Serman. South African Schools Football Association (SAFSA) Local Chairperson Siphiwe Mtshingila thanked

the teachers for their commitment in support of their children during the course of the tournament. “We are also happy to hear from the sponsors that the competition will continue next season. Those who did not win must go home and prepare for a much better and improved competition next season,” said Mtshingila. The Spur Masidlale Soccer programme is recognised as one of the

leading youth soccer development initiatives in the country today, according to Banyana Banyana former player and the programme’s Ambassador Desiree Ellis. Since launched in 2005 with 12 coaching clinics, the Spur-grown programme has touched the lives of 30 000 children. It has been in Gauteng, Sandton, in Soweto, in Cape Town, Durban and this year in Port Elizabeth.

Bay Stars FC 100% home victory NCEBA DLADLA BAY STARS FC continued with their 100% unbeaten home record when they thrashed a game Mthatha Bucks FC 3-0 at the Gelvandale Stadium in the last game of the Vodacom League on Saturday. Goals from Farouk Abrahams (8 minutes), Wade Jooste (38th minute in the first half) and another one from Abrahams (58th) in the second half took the game away from the visitors who were not overawed at all by

the home team. Stars were called to defend tight especially in the second half as the Bucks strikers forged ahead. “It was a good win. A good team performance. I am happy for my players,” said coach Graham Harrison. The team finished second on the log with 61 points and only three points behind leaders FC Tornado who will be competing in the Eastern Cape play-offs of the National First Division. “We can be especially proud of our

achievements if you bear in mind that this is our first season as a club after being established in September last year and we already managed to get established clubs to take note of the new kid on the block,” said Bay Stars Managing Director Tony Lovegrove. According to Lovegrove, his energetic side is still committed to the ultimate dream of having a Premier Soccer League participation and to ensure the longevity of the initiatives for the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium.

Bay Stars FC coach Graham Harrison upbeat for next season NCEBA DLADLA “NOT all is lost, we’ll surely come back and win the league next season,” said Vodacom League outfit Bay Stars Football Club coach Graham Harrison. Nelson Mandela Bay is pinning its hopes on Bay Stars FC to one day play in the elite Professional Soccer League. But for now, the stars remain the serious title contenders in the semi-professional soccer league. Harrison commended his side who were assembled only in September last year but managed to

come second on the log. Even though they did not win the league and get a berth in the promotional play-offs to the National First Division, he was happy about what they were able to achieve “in the new territory,” he said. “It wouldn’t be fair to single out any one player. I think they played well as a team with each making a contribution,” said Harrison. But a big one up, according to Harrison, must go to the owners, CEO Mr Yusuf Adams and Mr Tony Lovegrove, the team’s Managing Director - for their vision for the club. Harrison thanked “my Technical Manager” Mark Tommy for his tire-

less efforts in ensuring that the team was technically sound. The same, he said, goes to his assistants Wayne Iveson and Siya Gwambi as well as Team manager Nick Myataza and fitness coach Sharon Jessop. “Last but not least, my players. I want to thank them for a job well done. We might not have won the league but we’ll surely come back and do it next season. We’ve learnt our lessons and will show it next time,” said Harrison adding, that they would also take this time off to “assess and evaluate” to see if there were changes needed and improvements to be made.
