Sama nominees do Metro proud! NCEBA DLADLA FOUR musicians who are originally from Nelson Mandela Bay have been nominated for the prestige South African Music Awards (Samas) scheduled to take place next month and honouring the cream of the country’s musicians. Well-known crooner Loyiso Bala, Zonke Dikana, Asanda Bam and Nomhle Nongogo are competing for the awards with the best of the country’s musicians and international stars. One of the big hopefuls who have been nominated for two awards, is songstress Nomhle Nongogo of Motherwell. This follows only a few months after PE Express Indaba reported on rising star Nomhle releasing her debut album, “Ikwezi - the Morning Star”, in October last year. “It’s only a few months since you profiled her and now she receives two Sama nominations, representing Nelson Mandela Bay so well. We are so excited,” said On the Rise Production boss and Nomhle’s manager, Sonwabiso Nompunga. Nomhle has been nominated for the Female Artist of the Year as well as Best African
Adult Album – competing against fellow former Port Elizabethan Zonke, amongst other big names in the South African music industry. According to Nompunga, her nomination as well as those of Loyiso, Dikana (of KwaZakhele) and Bam (of New Brighton) is evidence of the great talent that Nelson Mandela Bay has to offer. Like Dikana and Bam, Nomhle’s musical journey has been very colourful since she started singing in 2000 as a backing vocalist for a number of wellknown acts from gospel to hip hop and Afrojazz. In her short career as a solo artist, Nomhle, who is fast becoming a household name, has already shared the stage with big acts like Zahara and Freshlyground. Her talents have also been showcased outside of the country’s borders in countries like Mozambique and Lesotho where she took part in cultural festivals, spreading her distinct Afro-traditional funk sound. The Sama Awards will take place in Sun City on April 29 and 30, but according to Nompunga, Nomhle’s fans can look forward to a performance by her in Nelson Mandela Bay before that time at a date yet to be determined.

Nelson Mandela Bay Metro has many projects in pipeline NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor Zanoxolo Wayile has promised a number of multi-million rand projects which will change the face of this municipality. Speaking to the media about the plans to improve the lives of local communities, the mayor said the first of these is the Kings Beach upgrade which will be launched today. This will involve an environmental upgrade, an infrastructure project that addresses safety and social issues as well as phase two of the project which will include the construction of walkways, lighting and improved security in the dunes. The Metro’s housing delivery projects are planned for MK Silvertown, Kwa
Noxolo and Walmer O. These projects, he said, are meant to restore the dignity of the residents in the areas with the positive spin-offs of job creation and community development. The mayor said 97 units were constructed in MK Silvertown at a cost of R7,5 million. This project, which started in July 2010, will be completed this month. In KwaNoxolo, 168 houses were constructed at a cost of R13m. The project started in January 2010 and the current phase is also scheduled for completion this month. The current phase of a R37,9m construction project of 437 houses in Walmer O is also scheduled for completion this month and will be ready to be launched on 27 March. There is also the launch of Tshangana Clinic in New Brighton on March 22 and the launch of a R6,4 million Customer Care Centre in Mdoda Street, KwaMagxaki on 30 March.
Metro to spend more money on new houses than fixing them ANRI HENDRIKS THE Nelson Mandela metro will spend more money on building new houses this year than on fixing sub-standard work. This is according to Kosalin Naicker, acting executive director of human settlements. “This, however, doesn’t mean we will stop repair work on houses that are being built. These houses must be completed,” Naicker told the metro’s standing committee for human settlements. There are an estimated 42 000 houses in the metro requiring repair work. This includes houses built before and after 1994. Naicker said a little good news for the metro is that a protocol was recently signed with the provincial department of hu-
NEW
man settlements, which stipulates “The municipality will get funds from the province before building work commences.” A number of contractors have already downed tools, because they were waiting very long to be paid. A problem which delegates mentioned to the standing committee, is that building contractors are not prepared to start building before their contracts are signed and there seems to be a hold up with the signing of contracts on the administrative side. In September it was announced that even if the metro handed in a housing budget of R1,2 milliard, the provincial department allocated only R525 million. About R329 million thereof should have been used to fix houses of existing building projects.

Metro presents IDP and Budget to media NELSON Mandela Bay Executive mayor Zanoxolo Wayile and his Mayoral Committee presented the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Integrated Development Plan (IDP) and Budget whilst reporting on the road travelled so far in terms of service delivery to the media during a breakfast at the Cherry Place in Walmer this Monday The mayor and Chief Operations Officer Dr. Israel Tsatsire said, in the presence of
other Executive Directors and Acting Municipal manager Themba Hani, that the media is a “friend and strategic partner” which has an important role in informing communities of government plans. “The municipality will also be going to the communities to give them the annual report and also inform them of the IDP plans and budget. They will also give account on how they have performed,” said Dr. Tsatsire. The aim of this is to encourage public participation in what the mayor calls people-centred planning in a people-driven government.

Comrades want Faku “out” ANNA PAUW WHILE the Eastern Cape regional chair people were meeting Gwede Mantashe, ANC Secretary General, on Sunday, disgruntled ANC members gathered to demand the heads of two of the party’s king pins.
Members of the ANC gathered outside city hall on Sunday to de mand resignations from Nceba Faku and Zandisile Qupe while ANC Secretary General, Gwede Mantashe was meeting ANC regional chair people. Photo: Werner Hills
Apparently this group which grew to about 300 by late afternoon - is demanding that Nceba Faku, ANC Regional Chairperson and Zandisile Qupe, ANC Regional Secretary be axed. One of the protesters said if they didn’t get the reaction they wanted as a result of Sunday’s protest, they will mobilise all regions to pile on the pressure at the regional congress to be held in May to oust Faku and Qupe. The protesters are unhappy with the way in which Faku and Qupe are handling the party’s matters and handed over a note to Mantashe in this regard. Another protester said they want Faku “out”. According to this protester, Faku should also “leave alone” metro mayor Zanoxolo Wayile. The same sentiment was heard during the recent Cosatu strike. According to this protester this power struggle is causing a divide within the party. Mlibo Qoboshiyane, ANC spokesperson, was still in the meeting when Express Indaba called him for comment on Sunday. Mvusi Sicwetsha earlier spoke to Express Indaba from inside the meeting and said they were unaware of the protesters gathering outside city hall.

Walmer police get arrested for alleged corruption TWO Walmer Police members were arrested on charges of corruption last week after allegedly receiving money from suspects who were arrested in order to persuade the complainants to withdraw the case against them. According to police spokesperson Capt. Sandra Janse van Rensburg, Serg. Zakhumzi Poro (40) from the detective branch at Walmer SAPS was arrested last week Thursday while Const. Simethembile Nqebe (35) was arrested on Friday morning at his residence in Kwadwesi. Both members appeared in court on Friday. According to Janse Van Rensburg the Commander of Walmer Detectives received information that these members were involved in corrupt activities and he did not hesitate to investigate these allegations. “The SAPS management views corruption by employees in a very serious light and will act swiftly in getting rid of the criminal element within our midst,” said Janse Van Rensburg.

Maurice Page of Isidingo in the Bay with Afroteens NCEBA DLADLA THRONGS of fans are expected when the highly talented and dynamic Afropop and Afrojazz band the New Afroteens are joined by Maurice Paige, a.k.a. Calvin in the Soapy Isidingo at Kwekwe’s Tavern, eNjoli in Kwazakhele, this Saturday. This will be part of the band’s Township Tour to entertain and inspire other young people and, according to the band’s manager Karen Jack, to thank the people of the metro for their support since this youthful band was formed. “Isidingo’s Calvin (Maurice Paige) will ac-
tually perform on stage with the band,” said Karen, adding that this is going to be a treat for everyone who comes to the performance. The actor is a huge favourite of the band members and represents youth and achievement for young people in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro. The band has been very popular in the country since their debut CD release Siyazama (we are trying) in April last year. They have performed in over 150 venues to diverse audiences and every time music lovers call for encore. As part of the Township Tour, The New Afroteens have had performances in Motherwell, Gqeberha, KwaNobuhle, Helenvale and will also perform in Soweto-On-Sea on March 24. Entrance is free.

Bombers draw with Winter Rose SELBY MADIKANE THE crowd was treated to top-notch rugby, when African Bombers drew 21-21 with Winter Rose in their Super 12 Club Rugby Tournament game at the Zwide Stadium. Bombers piled on the pressure and their hard work paid dividends in the form of two tries scored in quick succession by Lindile Mbatsha and Sizwe Twani. The East Londoners looked as if they were suffering from jet-lag and were kept in their territory by the hosts. In time, Rose took the game to the Bombers and their prop, Siyabonga Mguzulwa scored their first try. The try was converted by Luyolo Tobezweni to bring the score to 10-7. After this try, Bombers lock,Vuyile Teyise, scored a try in the corner for his side, bringing Bombers scrumhalf Lulama Msila is charged by Winter Rose players. Photo: Selby Madikane
Netball alumni beat students INDABA REPORTER AGE triumphed over youth as the NMMU 1 alumni beat the NMMU 3 students 14-10 in a closely contested A-section final at the SPAR-NMMU Netball Tournament in Port Elizabeth on Saturday. The season-opener, which took place at the university’s Second Avenue Campus, attracted a record 53 teams from across the metro. Although the students led by a goal at halftime, it was experience that eventually won the day for a strong senior side, which featured former Protea players Zanele Mdodana and Lana Krige. Mdodana represented South Africa at last year’s World Cup, while Krige is a former vice-captain of the national team and current SPAR-NMMU head coach. The university’s netball manager Theresa le Roux said the youngsters played a fast and expansive game, but their momentum was curbed owing to a number of unforced errors. “A lot of balls went out of court because they tried risky passes. “The older players, on the other hand, stayed calm and stuck to their gameplan, playing the short passes and making sure they got the ball through to the shooters.” She singled out Mdodana in goal defence and goalkeeper Queenie Diko for their strong defensive play. “They played really well and kept turning the ball over
for their team.” In the other pool finals, Framesby demolished NMMU’s second-tier team 31-4 in the A-reserve section, while Despatch took the B section from NMMU 1 in a narrow 15-12 win. Valencia beat Malherbe 1 (21-13) for victory in section C, with KwaMagxaki topping pool D ahead of Otto du Plessis (11-5). In the men’s league, NMMU once again dominated with NMMU 1 trouncing NMMU 2 (19-10) to take the top spot. Players in the winning sides received prize money in the form of SPAR gift vouchers to a total value of R7 200. The university’s netball chairperson Melinda Goosen said the tournament, which had grown substantially due to SPAR’s involvement over the past three years, was the club’s biggest event of the season. “They’ve come on board and added to this tournament in such a huge way. All the clubs now want to come and play here.” Goosen said organisers had been overwhelmed by the growing response – 36 teams had entered the previous year. In another joint initiative, the SPARNMMU netball club will host a coaching clinic at Grens High School in East London on Friday, one of a series of clinics held throughout the Eastern Cape. This will be followed by the SPAR Emma Kirchoff Memorial Tournament at Stirling High School on Saturday.
the score to 17-7. Rose replied with a penalty kick taken by Tobzweni to decrease the deficit to 15-10. Matters were levelled by Sisonke Dlova’s try to bring the score to 15 all. It appeared as though Rose meant business with Tobezweni putting a penalty kick between the posts to bring the score to 18-15. But, the visiting side’s joy was short lived, following a successful long range penalty kick by Bombers flyhalf, Masixole Banda to bring the score to 18-18. The referee, Phillip Bosch, who handled the game fairly, awarded a penalty to Rose. Tobezweni took the penalty and kicked the score to 21-18. In the final moments of the game, Banda took a long range penalty from his own 10m line to take the Bombers to 21-21. Bombers second team edged out Winter Rose’s second team by 22-16.
