Support for victim’s revenge on rapists RIAAN MARAIS AND NCEBA DLADLA

A

GROUP of angry women protested in front of the KwaNobuhle Magistrates Court in support of an alleged rape victim who took revenge on her rapists. The woman (28) and her boyfriend (32) appeared in the Uitenhage Magistrates Court on charges of murder and assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm after they allegedly stabbed two of the rapists. One of them died while the other was injured. A third suspected rapist is still at large. The case against the alleged rape victim and her friend was postponed for further investigation and they were released on R1 000 bail each. According to Lt-Col Priscilla Naidu, police spokesperson, the alleged rape happened at 3am on Sunday. The woman was allegedly forced into a vacant house by the three men where they raped her and robbed her of her cell phone, watch and shoes. “One of the suspects then took her to his house where she was raped again. She managed to escape and told her boyfriend about the incident,” said Naidu. They later reported the incident at the KwaNobuhle Police Station. “Our investigation indicates, however, that the couple first took revenge before they laid the complaint,” said Naidu. The police were taken to an open field where two of the three suspects were found seriously injured.

Mazars Group meets computer need at schools NCEBA DLADLA AS part of an annual drive, the Mazars Group, an Audit and Financial Services firm in Bird Street has donated computers to three schools in the poverty stricken areas of Nelson Mandela Bay. “We buy computers every year in order to fit in with the programmes that constantly change. However, we don’t throw away the unused computers; but donate them to deserving schools,” said Mazars Group Executive Director Karin Fourie. The Mazars this year donated three computers each to WB Tshume Primary School in KwaZakhele, Khayalethu Youth Centre in North End and Morewag School in Kensington.

Receiving the three computers, WB Tshume Primary School Principal Buyile Sali commended the Mazars Group for their good gesture. “I am so pleased to say that these computers will make a whole lot of difference in this school. Our more than 400 pupils who would otherwise leave this school without this valuable knowledge will be happy to take turns using two of these computers to do computer literacy lessons while the third will be used by staff members to do their administrative work,” an elated Sali said. According to Sali, there is a need for big business to support education in their communities. “I want to thank the Mazars Group for making a difference in this community. I wish other businesses would do this also; and help those who are less fortunate push back the frontiers of poverty.

Kids Right to Good Sight Foundation screens at Ndzondlelo High NCEBA DLADLA THE Kids Right to Good Sight Foundation recently held eye screenings at Ndzondelelo High School as part of the Masibonisane Programme which helps about 1000 children per month to get free-screening. The Masibonisane Programme helps more than 2000 children with eye-sight problems who cannot afford to visit the optometrist.

Masibonisane in association with the Foundation is currently conducting screening for the 2012 academic year, with stationery sets being given to every child screened. As a non-profit making organisation, however, with limited resources, this vision could be impaired without sponsorship. By establishing the Kids Right to Good Sight Foundation, a non profit making organisation, Spec-Savers hope to appeal to Government, Corporates

and individuals to donate generously so that the programme can extend its services to thousands of children in need of eye-care, said Executive Assistant, Olwethu Nkonki. “The Foundation guarantees that every Rand donated will be spent on children’s spectacles and nothing will be deducted for administration,” Nkonki added. According to Nkonki, donors are also free to choose to help the children of specific employer groups and/or schools.

CollectaCan shakes up schools competitions FOR almost two decades Collect-a-Can have been committed to rewarding schools for the eco friendly efforts they make collecting used cans for recycling. Their National Schools Competition offers cash prizes to the schools that collect the most cans per month with additional prizes for schools that collect the most cans throughout the year. In addition, various subsidiary competitions keep the schools involvement with cans and recycling fresh and provide additional opportunities to win. This year Collect-a-Can are mixing things up and plan to introduce some exciting new competitions, which will be announced later in the year. “People may wonder why an organisation whose focus is on recycling used cans would be so involved with schools,” suggests Zimasa Velaphi, PR and Marketing Manager at Collect-aCan. “The answer is simple; Collect-a-

Can strives to build awareness around the recyclability of cans, and what better way to teach a nation than to teach the youth. Our schools competitions aim to educate learners to be sensitive, informed and aware of the importance of recycling for the environment and to demonstrate the economic benefits of recycling. “All types of cans namely food, beverage, polish, paint and aerosol cans, are recyclable and can be sold to Collect-a-Can for cash,” Velaphi concludes. Collect-a-Can’s National Schools Competition will run from mid February to October 2012. Subsidiary competitions will include the very popular CAN Craze Competition, which requires learners to work together to build a creative structure out of 300 or more cans, and which will run as usual from June to September. The Guinness World Records Attempt Competition, which rewards

schools with extra prizes for cans collected in October in a bid to boost collection numbers and beat a world record for collecting the most used cans in one month, will conclude being an annual competition this year and will only take place every five years going forward. Learners are encouraged to write letters to Collect-a-Can’s Can Man telling him what they would like for prizes this year and what would benefit their schools. This will enable Collecta-Can to tailor their prize offerings to better serve winning schools and learners. Letters can be mailed to The Can Man, PO Box 30500, Kyalami, 1684. Entry forms for the competitions will be made available from the middle of February at all Collect-a-Can branches as well as on their website www.collectacan.co.za. Collect-a-Can is also on Facebook and Twitter.

Support for rape victim’s revenge . . . continued from page 1 The men, 32 and 33 years old, were overpowered at their homes, assaulted and stabbed with a knife. After they were found they were taken by ambulance to Livingstone hospital. One of them died of his injuries while the other was treated under police custody. The third suspect is still at large. The injured suspect (32) also appeared briefly in the KwaNobuhle Magistrates Court yesterday in connection with the charges of rape and robbery. The hearing was postponed to March 2 for a formal bail hearing. Outside the court the group of about 30 protesting women waved placards with messages such as “Abuse against women is a disease” and “Lock up rapists”. Among the group of protestors was a sister of the suspect who is still at large. “My brother is a rubbish. He deserves to be locked up,” she said. According to her he is often violent towards his family members as well. She admitted that it would not bother her in the least if she heard that he was

killed by the community. When asked about this specific incident, Dr. Theodore Petrus, an anthropologist and specialist in criminology at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, said that while the police ask the community for their cooperation, the community often believes that violence is the only solution. “There is a huge difference between an ideal world and reality. The ideal would be that the police are called in, but the reality is that people often grow up with violence and then come to believe that violence is acceptable. Berenice Jacobs-Malgas, director of the Port Elizabeth Rape Crisis Centre, said rape is a violent crime. “We will always recommend that victims first go to the police, but people have had enough of rape. Victims, such as the one in this incident, probably want to react with the same violence that they were subjected to,” said Malgas. * Yesterday MEC for Human Settlements, Safety and Liaison, Helen Sauls-August, spoke at a meeting at City Hall to assess the role government and other law enforcement agencies are playing in fighting against crime in

the Eastern Cape as well as the problem with recent incidents of mob justice. Sauls-August said members of the community have a major role to play in assisting police in their crime fighting strategies. Sauls-August said without the community’s involvement, all that the other partners are doing will be in vain. The meeting was attended by members of the Portfolio Committee, the SAPS, the Departments of Justice and Correctional Services, the NPA, Community Police Forum (CPF), Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Safety and Liaison Directorate, NMMU academics and the media. August-Sauls said the integration of their efforts was of fundamental importance - to turn back the tide. “While our department and other agencies would argue that crime statistics are down, can we agree with that notion when mob justice and domestic violence incidences are this high, especially in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro?” asked the MEC.

Students run riot at PE College Iqhayi Campus NCEBA DLADLA POLICE fired stun-grenades at PE College Iqhayiya Campus’ students who were rioting, singing and toyitoying against the management on Friday morning. Classes were disrupted and police called when management allegedly forced “deregistered” students out of the gate and had the SRC president, Unathi Msutu, arrested by police. The students accuse Campus Head Clifford Jonas of being autocratic, abusing power, being incompetent and guilty of mismanagement and racism, among other complaints. According to eye-witnesses the police had to be called in. They fired stun grenades when they were stopped by students from leaving the premises after arresting Msutu. Acting on management’s instruction, the security officers barred the

media from entering until officials of Sadtu, Nehawu, Sasco and SRC intervened and Campus Head Jonas was called. Students on the scene complained that the admission policy of the Campus is different from other FET Colleges as it requires students who passed Grade 12 to sit for an aptitude test which they claim is a tool to discriminate against them. Students with Grade 12 are also required to register for a bridging course which the students claim is not SAQA accredited and not required for entry into FET as by law a grade 9 pass is sufficient. The bridging course costs R7 000. Students also complained that they do not have text-books even though NSFAS pays their bursary. “Those who have text-books are required to bring them back after the year ends, without compensation. What for?” asked Duma Rozani, a member of the SRC. These complaints also had teacher unions Sadtu, Sasco and Nehawu up in

arms in support of the students. Sadtu Branch member, George Chase said: “We also have a stand-off with the Campus Head. Another Sadtu member, Simphiwe Xalipi, said “we see students’ rights seriously violated in this institution. It is not right”. According to Iqhayiya Campus spokesperson Sandy Raubenheimer, there initially were only a few students singing and toyi-toying on Campus, but classes were only disrupted when police arrested the SRC president who was thought to be causing the disruption. Raubenheimer said: “The College management resolved to meet on Monday with Council Executives and all labour stakeholders and student representatives to look at the grievances and make a statement.” Raubenheimer and acting Principal Monwabisi Mzayidume visited the New Brighton police station and asked for SRC President Msutu to be released, said Raubenheimer.

NCEBA DLADLA THETHELWA Wellem of EZ Kabane High School in KwaDwesi was nominated as the Junior Station Commissioner of KwaDwesi Police Station last Sunday. This mock nomination was part of the project by members of the SAPS in the KwaDwesi Police precinct including the Department of Education in the PE District and KwaDwesi precinct schools. It was aimed at involving young people in the fight against crime. Tyhilulwazi, EZ Kabane, KwaMagxaki, S.E.K Mqhayi, Lungisa and Gqebera High Schools took part in the project that was meant to communicate a very strong anti-

crime message to the youth. Each school sent two representatives for election as a Junior Station Commander. Before nomination and election, the pupils also expressed their thoughts on how crime in the area should be tackled. “We decided to embark on this crime-fighting project that involves the youth because the youth are being targeted by criminals to further criminal activities,” said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu. Gwavu added that the youth prematurely leave school as a result of their involvement in crime. All the speakers urged school-going children never to leave school and not become involved in crime.

School can win R1 million in soccer cup INDABA REPORTER SCHOOLS can now register their soccer teams to participate in the 2012 Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup, in which the winning school will walk away with R1 million. Registration for the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup, the richest schools tournament in the world, opened last week. Financial Services Company, Sanlam, the Motsepe Family Foundation and Ubuntu Botho Trust have urged every school in all nine provinces, whether private, independent, township or rural, to register to compete. The tournament is played under the auspices of the South African

Schools Football Association (SASFA) . Not only is there a total of R3.4 million in prize money up for grabs, but football scouts from Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club will be attending as many rounds as possible in a bid to find exceptional talent to place in the Mamelodi Sundowns Football Academy. “One of the key objectives of this sponsorship is to get as many football players as possible between the ages of 15 and 19 to compete and possibly to be seen by soccer scouts. Players who stand out will then be recruited into development structures to be nurtured and shaped into professional footballers,” said Frank Louw, Sanlam’s Sponsorships Manager. “To be able to achieve this we need to encourage all schools to reg-

ister no matter where they are situated and they have until 9 March 2012 to do so.” The prize money is R1 000 000 (first place), R600 000 (second place), R500 000 (third place) and R400 000 (fourth place). The 9 provincial winners will receive R100 000 each. The prize money is to be utilised for any development project that enhances or advances the mission and objectives of the school and/ or its immediate community, such as building of extra classrooms, computer centres, upgrading the soccer pitch, etc. The Motsepe Family Foundation endorses the objectives and rationale behind the sponsorship: “Look at our president, Mr Patrice Motsepe,” said Kenneth Makhanya, representative of the Motsepe Family Foundation and Ubuntu Botho

Trusts. “He achieved success by setting goals and working hard to ensure he reached them - which often meant sacrifice. The Sanlam Kay Motsepe Cup was initiated by Mr Motsepe through the Motsepe Family Foundation in memory of his mother and to recognize the integral role she played in his life – encouraging him through school, then university and helping him through the dark times as well. This is what we want for the South African youth and Sanlam, having the same vision, has created an ideal partnership.” To register to compete in the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup, contact Nelson Belebesi of the South African Schools Football Association (SASFA) 0 011 567 2824 or Mr Frank Louw of Sanlam on 0 021 947 2093.

Boxing meeting at Lilian Ngoyi

Mandela Bay football bonanza NCEBA DLADLA EASTERN Cape football fans will have lots of elite football entertainment this week as Nelson Mandela Bay stadium will be hosting a Professional Soccer League (PSL) match between Jomo Cosmos and Kaizer Chiefs tonight while Orlando Pirates will engage Angola’s Recrativo do Libolo in the (CAF) First leg of the Champions League Competition on Sunday. There is also the Southern Kings versus the Sharks spectacular rugby match at this stadium on Friday. Amakhosi fans will be hoping for three points and nothing less from their third placed team on the log. With 28 points from 15 games, Amakhosi have been trying hard for some time now to win the elusive Absa League title. The Cosmos outfit, who have made Mandela Bay Stadium their

home for this match, will however be hoping to upset the applecart and to turn the tide as they are rooted at the bottom of the log. Cosmos, aka Ezenkosi have nine points after 15 games. While the Phefeni Glamour boys will not be parading new players for this tough second round of the season, and will be without the influential Reneilwe Letsholonyane in the middle of the park, they should have enough arsenal to go for the jugular and bury Cosmos with the return of Itumeleng Khune (on goals) Josta Dladla and Lucky Baloyi coach Vladimir Vermezovic Ezenkosi, however, have just signed a few players. They include their experienced former player Russell Mwafulirwa (who has been campaigning in Europe), Mark Haskins (on a temporary basis) and Namibia’s Lazarus Kaimbi returning to don the Cosmos jersey. Speaking in a media briefing at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium last week Pirates coach Julio Leal said his team has done all its preparations and was ready to put up the best perform-

ance in front of their Eastern Cape supporters who he hopes will be coming in droves. Pirates players returned to training immediately after the new year, Leal said. “We are delighted to be here. Without any injuries all the players are ready to give their best. We have done our homework and know what to expect against our opponents,” said Leal. Team manager Senzo Mazingisa said President Dr. Irvin Khoza has put all his trust in the players to lift the Africa Champions Cup, to emulate the 1995 Pirates squad. This will be in honour of the 75 years’ celebration of the formation of the Ghosts, as Pirates is known. The management of the stadium said all logistics were in order for all the spectacular matches and was hoping that fans will enjoy themselves in the three sporting days. With regard to the CAF match which will be taking place for the first time in the Bay and Eastern Cape, Access Management CEO Stephan Preto-

rius said: “We are fully prepared and honoured to be hosting this prestigious Confederation of African Football (CAF) match and would like to encourage all soccer fans of the city to come out of their numbers to support the game and prove that we are truly worthy hosts,” said Pretorius.

Ncedo soccer teams prepare for season ahead SELBY MADIKANE HUNDREDS of community members and scholars converged on the NU9 Stadium in Motherwell to watch Ncedo High School teams in their preseason programme. The Coca-Cola Waya-Waya supplied music to contribute to the electric atmosphere on the day. The day started with a round robin format and ended with a knock-out system. Ncedo’s soccer convener, Siphivo Mtshingila, said the purpose of the pre-season programme was to

prepare teams for the hectic 2012 soccer season ahead. “Today our teams have demonstrated that they have potential. They excelled and I am very pleased with their performance”. He added that it was a good opportunity to identify talent and that they noted that the players are hungry for success. The trophy went to Legends XI. points, when Golden Stars failed to arrive for their clash at Dynamo’s fields, while Vulumzi High School collected 3 points as the result of Walmer Ladies not showing up for their match at Kemsley Park. Mustangs, the favourites to win the league, edged out Shin-

ing Stars by 1-0 at NMMU South Campus while Continental Express kept their hopes of lifting the ABSA league trophy alive with a hard fought victory of 1-0 over PE College at Kemsley Park. Warriors and Park United drew 1-1.

BOXING South Africa (BSA) Nelson Mandela Bay Director Mthunzi Mapitiza invites all boxing licensees and boxing lovers to a meeting at the Lilian Ngoyi Sports Centre, KwaZakhele today from 5.30pm. According to Mapitiza, the Provincial Road Show of the BSA Board this weekend in East London will be discussed. According to a BSA statement, members of the governing BSA board decided on 12 December to visit all provinces this February to meet licensees and all boxing stakeholders. According to the statement, the board wants to present to the boxing fraternity a Strategic Plan document for 2012 to 2017 and also to solicit input. They also want to discuss with boxing people the current status quo as well as address concerns. But in the statement there is no mention of the Board, which is chaired by former Sports Minister Ngconde Balfour, coming to Nelson Mandela Bay, so Mapitiza would like boxing loving people to discuss ways to meet the board in East London, he said. According to Mapitiza, the meeting is open even to those who like the sport but are not licensees. Mapitiza said that at the meeting they will also look at the past year’s successes and failures in order to correct mistakes and build on anything good identified.
