HE development of a R195 million mall in Zwide Township in Port Elizabeth has been hailed as a positive development by the office of Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor, Zanoxolo Wayile. The major retail hub – known as Kinako Mall – is currently being constructed at the intersection of the R75 Uitenhage and Siphondo Roads and will serve a prospective catchment area of 340 000 customers with a total estimated retail potential of R1,22 billion. The mayor’s spokesperson, Luncedo Njezula, said the mall development is in line with the municipality’s township rejuvenation plan. The mall, which is strategically located to serve the areas of Zwide, Bethelsdorp, Algoa Park, Kwazakhele, Soweto-On-Sea, KwaMag-xaki, KwaDwesi, Struandale and New Brighton, opens in April next year. The 20 000 m² mall, which has the potential to expand to 30 000 m², is a 50/50 joint venture development be-

build, Home Express, Torga, Franco Ceccato, Hungry Lion and Chingo. “The mall would have all the important elements – a great location, fantastic exposure, with 27 000 vehicles passing daily and 340 000 people living in the catchment area,” said Gerhard Jooste of Prosperito, a 100% shareholder in African Dune, adding that the mall will have 99 parking bays and a taxi area that accommodates 37 vehicles. According to Jooste, the site has high visibility from the surrounding highways and arterial roads and is close to the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Missionvale Campus, the Eastern Cape Training Centre and Dora Nginza Hospital. Shoprite Group spokesperson said his company was committed to bringing shopping closer to the people and Njezula agreed. “It’s a welcome development that will put in infrastructure to boost the local economy. People will have access to banks, retailers and food outlets, while being saved from transport costs. “We welcome this investment and centre of economic activity which will surely improve the revenuebase of the municipality,” said Njezula.

HE Eastern Cape Department of Public Works handed over a piece of land in Kuyga to the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality on 31 July as part of its efforts to build on inter-governmental relations.
Public Works MEC Thandiswa Marawu handed over the piece of land to be used in the municipality’s housing development plan for the area. The event also formed part of the Mandela Month activities, intended to promote property ownership especially in the previously disadvantaged and property-less communi-

MEC Marawu said the land forms part of the many pockets of land that the department of Public Works is releasing to municipalities across the Province to be used for housing development and other needs.
MEC Marawu acknowledged that municipalities are not able to solely carry the responsibility of delivering on the needs of the communities. “It is important for different spheres of government to work together with municipalities, because they are at the forefront of service delivery to the people,” said MEC Marawu.

multimillion rand investment into development of local communities. Since inception, there have been six volunteer projects in the Nelson Mandela Bay area which have focused on areas of education, youth development, health and community well-being. The sixth project in the Eastern Cape, saw Volkswagen volunteers help the Limekhaya High School in KwaLanga, Uitenhage take things to the next level by donating their time and resources towards the creation of the school and community resource centre. “After more than a year of working closely with this school through the Volkswagen Community Trust, we have been able to assess the school’s capacity and needs in terms of Mathematics, Science and Computer learning,” said Nonkqubela Maliza, Director
of Corporate and Government Affairs at Volkswagen Group SA. The research resulted in a Volkswagen Group South Africa and Volkswagen Community Trust joint funding solution to upgrade the school’s science laboratory facilities and equipment, as well as the creation of a multi-purpose resource centre. In five hours, 70 volunteers achieved the task of renovating and outfitting a 240m² centre with study stations, computer hub, library infrastructure, adult reading corner, children’s edu-play area, as well as a 40-seater theatre for audio visual content and films. This volunteer project was based on the concept of International Mandela Day which sought to inspire individuals to take action and help change the world for the better.

Teachers must be the agents of social change – Naptosa president Ezrah Ramasehla NCEBA DLADLA
T
EACHERS must remain focused at the job at hand despite the challenges the country’s education is facing currently, said National Professional Teachers Organisation of South Africa (Naptosa) President Ezrah Ramasehla. Speaking to PE Express Indaba during the organisation’s Eastern Cape Chapter’s 6th Annual Conference at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s Sports Centre in Summerstrand last week, Ramasehla acknowledged that the education department was fraught with insurmountable challenges. “Our education is faced with systemic and political, or call it irration-
al, challenges which affect the classroom; but there is no need for us to keep on talking about the problems. The country needs solutions,” said Ramasehla emphatically. According to Ramasehla, South Africa needs to invest in and equip teachers to deliver skills of the 21st Century. “And that is what Naptosa’s Institute for Teacher Development is all about,” he said, adding that teacher development will salvage the problematic situation the country’s education finds itself in. Naptosa is currently running an inservice Caps Programme in the Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. This is very critical to make teachers classroom experts, said Ramasehla. Teachers, on the other hand, needed a change of attitude, a different kind
of motivation and commitment, according to Naptosa president. “It is also worthy to mention that the world is changing. Education must be geared towards making learners smart - to be competitive in the global market,’ said Ramasehla, adding that Scandinavian countries as well as Singapore, Malaysia and Japan were leading in this aspect. “This conference’s theme calls teachers to be the agents of change and light,” said Naptosa Eas-tern Cape Chairperson Nkosiphendule Ntantala, adding that their aim is to strengthen the means of operation to encourage teachers to add value to education. “Practically, the motions we put on the table speak about the provision of Learner/Teacher Support Material and Naptosa’s roll-out of the Caps programme to solve the teaching problems in the classroom,” said Ntantala.

Wettest year on the cards PE EXPRESS REPORTER WHILE Port Elizabeth and surrounds recorded its second wettest winter on Sunday, the area is also well on its way to experience the wettest year in more than 30 years. With last weekend’s rainfall Port Elizabeth and surrounds surpassed the record for the second wettest winter on record from 1960 to 2012. According to Garth Sampson of the local weather office, at 2pm on Sunday, 424 mm of rain had been recorded for winter 2012, surpassing the 2002 record of the second wettest winter with 405 mm. “The all time record of 452 mm (1979) is in danger of being surpassed, with 18 days
still left this winter and more rain predicted for this week,” said Sampson. With 5 months left of the year, Port Elizabeth is fast approaching the wettest year in more than 30 years. In 1981, an annual rainfall of 1010 mm was measured. At this stage a total of 735mm of rain has been recorded in PE and only 38mm is needed to surpass the 1995 record when 773 mm was measured. The average annual rainfall for Port Elizabeth is 622 mm, which has been achieved only 6 times since 1990. According to Sampson, the first seven months of the year are by far the wettest on record, with 695 mm measured until 31 July 2012. The previous record was 1979, when 673 mm was measured.

Funni Galore is the comedy duo’s latest all-new package of laughter which pokes fun at the crazy characters who inhabit our multi-cultural, multi-lingual melting pot that is our South African society. Some brand-new characters are introduced, whilst hilarious new chapters are shared in the lives of old favourites. Funni Galore is the fourth in the series of shows co-written between Fabbri and Centrestage owner Gary Hemmings, following on from their previous hits Toast, Gino Fabbri is Completely Nuts and last years’ Toasted Nuts. Donna Africa shows off her extraordinary transformation from classy cabaret singer to the Mitchells Plain inhabitant Beronyce – as she shares her difficulties of trying to get maintenance from Virgil, along with the details of some of his run-ins with the law; although Virgil sees an entirely different side to proceedings. A new show finale sees Fabbri integrating his drumming skills as he takes his audience on a show-stopping evolution of drums, showcasing some of the most popular and recognisable drum riffs of all time. The show starts at 7.30pm and a menu is available. Tickets cost R100 and can be booked through Computicket.

Performing Arts Company launched in Metro NCEBA DLADLA HISTORY was made in Nelson Mandela Bay when the PE Opera House (PEOH) announced the establishment of a six-member Performing Arts Company last week Tuesday. The Professional Arts Company Eastern Cape (PACEC), is a dream come true for newly appointed PEOH General Manager, Monde Ngonyama. Four women; Olwethu Mdala (22), Nomfundo Mgoqi (27), Nobesuthu Rayi (24), Jocelyn Scholtz (22) and two men Xolisa Ngubelanga and Xabiso Zweni were welcomed as members of PACEC by
thespians, arts and entertainment practitioners including the doyen of theatre and internationally renowned film actor and director Nomhle Nkonyeni and their parents. These are suitably qualified candidates who were interviewed by a panel of judges that included an HR Consultant Corne van der Berg, PEOH Board Secretary Marian Lucouw, Performing Arts Education Specialist Marlene Pieterse and Mandla Mbotwe, Steve Biko Centre Artistic Director. “The successful candidates had to display strong ability in performing arts education development, theatre making, acting and repre-
senting abilities for creative arts industry development,” said Ngonyama, adding that there was a lot expected of the company to ensure the growth of theatre in the province. Creativity and innovation was expected from the members in telling “untold and imaginary” stories about the direction South Africa is taking. “The company has to establish theatre clubs
at schools to go beyond the curriculum imperatives of teachers thus ensuring that theatre takes centre stage in the minds of school-going youth,” said Ngonyama. They are expected to produce quality productions that would bring back respect to theatre as a discipline. “This is very good for theatre development. I appreciate the work that you are doing, Monde. If these things happened in our times, we would not have left to seek greener pastures in places like Gauteng and Cape Town,” said Nkonyeni. t In the middle, in the front row is the great Nomhle Nkonyeni with front from left, Nobesuthu Rayi and Jocelyn Scholtz. Metro township schools called to join Chess League NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay Township schools are busy engaging their learners in the game of chess to improve their intelligence quotient. “We are busy introducing chess to township schools as a mandate from Nelson Mandela Bay Chess Union,” said Chess Development Officer, Lulamile Jonas. According to Jonas, chess is a mind game that has the ability to develop “logical and critical thinking” hence it was important that our future leaders start learning the game in order to be sharper leaders and think-tanks. A member of Monarch Chess Club, Jonas revealed that they successfully launched a township schools league last week to go parallel with the district’s league. And he reckons that the interest is
high in both primary and high school learners. “For instance there were about 80 learners from Zwide, KwaZakhele and New Brighton schools that attended the launch at Isaac Booi Primary School in Zwide last week,” said Jonas. Rattling off some of the schools already involved, Jonas mentioned Samuel Nongongo, Zamukulungisa, Charles Duna, Soweto-On-Sea and Isaac Booi Primary Schools and among the high schools he mentioned Loyiso and Ndzondelelo, boths schools in Zwide township. “League matches are played every Wednesday and are rotating, said Jonas, adding that matches are played at Soweto-On-Sea Primary School today (Wednesday 1 August) and will be played at Charles Duna Primary School in New Brighton, next week. Schools are still welcome to join the township league, according to Jonas. The EP Child and Youth Care Centre entered this year’s Mzansi Magic Market Day. They will be among the 500 other children selling their goodies at Walmer Park Shopping Centre on September 1. Seen here are some of the children who will take part in this event. EXCITEMENT is growing among the budding young entrepreneurs at the EP Child and Youth Care Centre who are hard at work creating products to sell at the Mzansi Magic Market Day on September 1. Travis Marshall, programme manager of the centre, said he thought it was a great opportunity for the children to get involved in the market day as part of their “Preparation for Adulthood” programme that is run at the centre. This is part of the Centre’s mission to release well-adjusted, productive citizens into the community through a series of programmes preparing them for life in the adult world. The children took a few weeks to come up with their business plans. Seven business plans were submitted by 26 of the children ranging from 10 to 13 years of age. They formed small groups of between three and four members each and have come up with an idea of what they want make and sell. As the children did not have the required start-up costs for their small businesses, Mzansti Magic agreed to provide the children with R1 500 seed money, allowing them to start production. They were then each given a budget for their group and told that this would be a loan. After the market day in September they would need to pay back the loan but can keep their profit. Among the products will be hanging wood-
en crosses, crucifix pendants and brooches, beautiful decorative items for the young and old, including key rings, hand mirrors, an assortment of handmade greeting cards, every day wooden objects that have transformed into majestic creations fit for royalty, beautiful jewellery boxes and earrings aimed at young girls and teenagers. The children were also fortunate enough to receive the technical expertise and guidance from a long-time volunteer of the centre, Nelmarie Oosthuizen, from Peace of Art Craft Shop in Walmer. She gave each group practical guidance on how to create, present and market the products. “It has been truly amazing to see these young people develop over the past few months. They have taken the initiative and been very busy putting the finishing touches on their products and fine tuning their marketing strategy. It is important to note that although the child care workers and staff of the EP Child and Youth Care Centre have been encouraging and guiding the children, all the work completed is their own,” said Marshall. Mzansi Magic Market Day takes place at the Walmer Park Shopping Centre on September 1. About 500 children will be participating and there will be 120 stalls. Stall entries close this Saturday, August 18. For information contact Michelle Brown at 0 041 581 6424.

Swimmer Kevin Paul set for Paralympics gold BETTIE GILIOMEE
P
ORT Elizabeth paralympic swimmer Kevin Paul, who holds the world record in 100 metre breaststroke, jets off on Friday to participate in the London Paralympics with high hopes of returning with at least one gold medal. Paul, who at the age of 17 won the gold medal in the 100 metre breaststroke at the Beijing Paralympics in 2008, has qualified for five events for the London Paralympics. A special farewell function will be held for this former Grey High head prefect tonight at the Old Grey Club. Being a sprint swimmer, Paul will participate in the 50 metre freestyle, 100 metre freestyle, 400 metre freestyle, 100 metre breast-stroke and the 200 metre individual medley. Paul, who turned 21 on 30 June, was born with no pectoral muscles in the left side of his chest. His left arm is slightly shorter than his right and he has adapted his stroke to swim predominantly with his shoulder muscles. He swims in the S10 disability category for freestyle, backstroke and butterfly and the SB9 category for breast-stroke. Paul is one of the favourites in the SA Paralympics swimming team as the defending champion in his favourite 100 metre breast-stroke event
Paralympic swimmer Kevin Paul (left) and his coach Brian Elliot during their recent visit to Berlin, Germany where he not only qualified to participate in the 400 metre freestyle at the London Paralympics but also celebrated his 21st birthday. Apart from the 400m freestyle, Paul will also compete in four other events at the Paralympics. Photo: SUPPLIED in which he also holds the world record. He has set his sights on making the finals in his two freestyle events and retaining his breast-stroke title. “In the 100m breast-stroke, I really want to defend my gold from Beijing but the top four in the world are all very close in that one. I’m ranked third in the world in the 200m individual medley
where I came fourth in the World Champs in Holland in 2010 so hopefully I can go one better this year and grab a medal in that race,” said Paul. Paul is the first to admit that he was an unknown in Beijing and that things will be very different this year. “I suppose you could say that I’m a marked man now but it works the other way too. I know my opposition and
their tactics and I know exactly what I’m going to be up against in London. My body aches from all the training when my head hits the pillow at night but I know its going to be worth it. I want to experience the thrill of winning the gold medal again because once they hang that ribbon around your neck no-one can take it away from you.”
Paul, who is in year-two of his law degree at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, trains twice per day in the pool and has a gym session between swims. He is coached by well-known local swimming instructor, Brian Elliot. He has attended several training camps overseas in the past months in preparation for the Paralympics. Apart from his successes in the swimming pool, Paul also has an impressive list of academic achievements. He was head prefect at Grey High in 2009 where he also received full academic colours in 2008 and 2009. He achieved 11 A’s for his final exams in 2009. He is currently doing a LLB Law degree at the NMMU in Port Elizabeth and is one of the top students in the faculty. He is the current Ambassador for the Law Faculty and has been inducted into the “World Golden Key Council” for being one of the top 15% of law students in over 300 universities around the world. Last year in April he was the Top All Round Law student for first years at NMMU. ) Port Elizabeth also has a hopeful on the athletics field for a gold medal at the London Paralympics. Michael Louwrens (52), an NMMU athlete and former shot-put world record holder will represent South Africa for the fourth time at the Paralympics. He has won three Paralympics gold medals in shot-put (in 1996, 2000 and 2004).

Exchamp Sifama dashes local idol Lusindiso Siyo’s title hopes NCEBA DLADLA PORT Elizabeth boxer Lusindiso Siyo’s hopes of fighting for the Provincial Flyweight title have been dashed when he was knocked out in five rounds by East London’s Xola Sifama at Babs Madlakane Community Hall, KwaNobuhle in Uitenhage on Saturday. A big right to the jaw by the former SA Flyweight champion Sifama (50.78kg) in 2min 46 seconds of the fifth round saw local idol Siyo (50.72) going down like a pole-axed bull with the vastly experienced referee Ace Makaluza waving the fight off without even counting. “I am back,” said SA’s No. 6 rated Sifama who lost the SA title to the current champion Doctor Ntsele in July 2011 after the fight. Sifama added that he was hoping to get a crack at Ntsele to win his title back. The duo’s fight scheduled for six-
rounds was headlining Gladys “Noforty” Tsenene’s Rainbow Boxing Promotions development tournament. This was after the fight initially penned as the main bout for the vacant SA Junior Flyweight title between East Londoners Vuyani Keswa and Mfundo Gwayana was cancelled in the eleventh hour owing to Tsenene’s failure to secure television sponsorship for the bill. “I had to cancel the initial main bout when I realised that I did not have television for the tournament as I was promised,” explained Tsenene (73). In the main supporting bout PE’s Lungisani Jikani (59.68) beat a game Ndudumo Lolwana (58.98) of eRhini in the Lightweight division of four rounds while in the best bout of the day which kept fans on their feet Lwandile Phillip beat Thando Mahlahla over four rounds in the flyweight division.
FOUR Nelson Mandela Bay amateur boxers took part in the Provincial Boxing Elite Training Squad that took place in Mdantsane, East London on 2 and 3 August last week. Luzuko Jonas, Mfundo Mbengashe, Luvuyo Mahlulo and Mabutana Nomoyi were part of the 43 professional and amateur boxers selected for the elite training organised by the Eastern Cape Academy of Sport (ECAS) in conjunction with the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture in the province. The training involved physical testing, nutrition assessment and gym induction programmes meant to sharpen the skills of both ama-
teur and professional boxers to achieve the optimum results in their game. It was attended by the IBF Miniflyweight titlist Nkosinathi “Mabhere” Joyi, Former IBF Female and current WBF Female Champion Noni “She Bee Stinging” Tenge, SA Champions Sabelo Jubatha (Featherweight), Miniyakhe Sityatha (Junior Bantamweight), Luzuko Siyo (Junior Flyweight), Mzolisi Yoyo (Junior Welterweight) and Nomandithini Ndyambo who is to challenge for the vacant SA Female Lightweight title against Bonita van Jaarsveld at Orient Theatre in East London on 20 August. “The focus of the camp was to orientate boxers in terms of the services available to them. In an attempt to assist boxers with their training and periodisation schedules, the
Academy introduced a monitoring system which will monitor and manage all aspects relating to boxers’ fitness, conditioning, nutrition and medical support services,” said ECAS Manager Herman Terblanche. Nelson Mandela Bay Amateur Boxing Organisation Secretary Mzwandile Sidina was excited about the boxers’ exposure to “new scientific methods of training” which he believes augurs well for the metro’s hope of representation in the 2016 Olympic games. “These young boxers are also giving us hope of reviving the sport that is gradually dying in Nelson Mandela Bay. Thanks to the Eastern Cape Academy of Sport initiatives, through these boxers we can bring back boxing glory days,” said an upbeat Sidina.
