No dignity for loved ones at cemetery ZELDRÉ SWANEPOEL
T
HE past Mothers’ Day renewed the mounting frustrations of visitors to the Forest Hill cemetery. Noleen Jonck and her family had to take it upon themselves to cut the tall grass surrounding the graves of their parents on Mothers’ Day. Her parents who passed away ten and two years ago respectively, are buried in one grave. “We had to remove the tall grass so that the grave could look presentable before the grandchildren came to put flowers on the grave. We couldn’t let them see the grave like that. “It’s already heartbreaking to have lost our loved ones, and to have their last resting place look so untidy makes it more heartbreaking. Our loved ones deserve some dignity,” she said. Jonck said she questioned the caretaker about the condition of the cemetery and he told her there was no funding for cutting the grass regularly. “We have paid for this plot and as rate payers we expect it to be maintained. Surely there was a budget set aside for the maintenance and upkeep of the cemetery? So how can it be said that there is no money for cutting the grass?” Jonck asked. Jackie Serfontein’s son, Divan (14), was buried in the Forest Hill cemetery in December last year; and her main concern is the cows grazing in the unfenced cemetery, damaging the tombstones and also feeding on the flowers on the graves.
A cow is seen grazing around the graves in the Forest Hill cemetery. Photo: DIE BURGER ARCHIVES “There are also heaps of sand that have not been flattened yet, giving the cemetery overall an untidy look,” she said. “There used to be a staff of about 19; and now there are only two caretakers. How can two people take care of a cemetery of that size?” she asked. Serfontein and her husband regularly come across the cows among the graves. “One of the cows had been standing on my son’s grave and the weight of it caused the grave to cave

in. Seeing our child’s grave this badly damaged was very traumatic for my husband and me. Our son passed away only five months ago and we come to his grave to spend time with him; and seeing the cemetery in such a mess does not provide the peace and tranquillity we go to find there.” Ward 2 DA Councillor, Dean Biddulph, who is aware of the issues regarding the cemetery, is currently working on a solution. “The ongoing concerns around the state of all cemeteries within the metro is something which we are
desperately trying to resolve. The situation is further aggravated by the current cash crisis and lack of sufficient budget allocations,” Biddulph said. “As someone who also has a family member interred in a municipal cemetery, I understand and empathise with the many residents for whom the current situation amounts to a slap in the face of the memory of their loved ones,” said Biddulph. “In an effort to try to find solutions to the problems, I met the senior metro official for cemeteries three weeks ago and personally took a tour of the Forest Hill cemetery. Certain interventions have been agreed to and a number of these will be addressed now that the Adjustments Budget has been approved. “I have also brought the situation to the attention of both the Executive Director for Public Health and also the Acting Municipal Manager. I remain committed to doing whatever I can to ensure that the memory of our loved ones is respected and accorded the dignity that they deserve.” said Biddulph In March Die Burger reported that the Municipal spokesperson, Kupido Baron, had said that the only lasting solution for the problem with the cows would be to erect permanent fencing. “To put fencing around all the municipal cemeteries would cost approximately R40 million. That is a lot of money to spend if we don’t know for certain how long it will be before the fence is damaged again,” Baron said at the time.

Money owed to local clinics by government paid NCEBA DLADLA
N
EWS that the Provincial Health Department has finally paid the money owed to the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has for now put to rest concerns over the future of clinics as the providers of primary health care. “The MEC (Sicelo Gqobana) in-
structed the Department of Health to do the transfer, so the transfer was made,” said Provincial Health Spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo last week. Kupelo was allaying fears of clinics possibly suspending their operations as well as a shortage of medicines. Nelson Mandela Bay Communications Director Roland Williams said Council took a Resolution on 27 October 2011 to transfer the rendering and management of the Munici-
pal Primary Health Care Services (PHC) to the Eastern Cape Department of Health (ECDoH), adding that a Transfer Agreement to effect was signed by Acting Municipal Manager Themba Hani and the ECDoH on 29 December 2011. This was effectively transferring the PHC services to the ECDoH with effect from 1 January 2012. “Since 1 January there has been joint cooperation management of the PHC clinic and the clinic services and the ECDoH Metro District Of-

fice,” said Williams, adding that the signed transfer agreement made provision for Mandela Bay to continue rendering the services on an agency basis. The metro then invoiced the provincial health department and was paid a portion of the subsidy. Kupelo confirmed on Friday that what was owing for 2011 has now been paid. “The Nelson Mandela Bay metro budget ends on 30 June and all PHC services were included in this budg-

A PORT Elizabeth family and school are grieving after a young rugby hero died in the Livingstone Hospital last week. Athenkosi “Tiny” Maswana (18), of Ithembelihle Comprehensive School in New Brighton, died of head injuries which he sustained in a taxi accident last week Monday. “Our whole school is devastated. He was a good learner and rolemodel. This is a big tragedy,” said Theo Pieterse, the school’s first team coach. Maswana was on his way home after a rugby practice at the African Bombers Rugby Club when the taxi he was riding in was left standing without fuel just outside Motherwell. A truck hit the stationary taxi from behind just after 8pm. According to Pieterse, Tiny was “unbelievably talented” and he was only 13 years old when he started playing prop for the first team. Last year he was included in the Eastern Province’s under-19 group and he played more that 80 matches for his school. “ I was so proud of everything that Tiny achieved. He lived for Athenkosi rugby and I was always next to the field whenever I could be there,” said his dad, Thembinkosi Maswana. He told with tears in his eyes how he and his son always used to laugh together.
UITENHAGE members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) have acted quickly to arrest four suspects in connection with the attack, stabbing and robbery of an off-duty officer last Friday. Two suspects, Ntando Stwayi (31) and Siyabulela Puba (23) were charged with the attack while the other two were released owing to insufficient evidence linking them to the attack. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Gerda Swart said a 31 year-old police constable was walking on his way home in Mqolomba Street in KwaNobuhle on Tuesday at about 10.15 pm when he was attacked by the suspects. According to Swart, a white VW golf stopped next to the officer, the suspects allegedly got out, assaulted and stabbed him with

He was later transferred to a hospital in Uitenhage where he was reported to be in a stable condition. “Following up on various leads, Detective Warrant Officer Deon Arnolds arrested the four in their homes,” said w.o Swarts. Phakamisa High School learners offer messages of love to nurses NCEBA DLADLA “We appreciate the love, care and support that you give to us patients... even when it seems unimportant you show patience, love and tolerance. Without you (nurses), the world is nothing!” This is one of the messages a Port Elizabeth learner wrote in support of the International Nurses Day on Saturday 12 May. The Grade 11 learner, Anelisa Nakase of Phakamisa High School in Zwide Township together with her school-mates, teachers, members of the School Governing Body and Principal Mr Lungile Notshe, dedicated their first period on Friday 11 looking at the good work that nurses do for which sometimes they get no recognition and appreciation. Sanele Mhlanga sought PE Childline and Family Centre is looking for the parent of an 8-month old child. The biological mother, Sanele Mhlanga, gave birth to this child on 25 September 2011 at Kwazakhele MOU at Dora Nginza Hospital and requested assistance with the future planning of her child. Mhlanga stayed at 59 Cetu Street, Kwamaqxaki, Port Elizabeth and later changed her ad-
schools to work in tandem with local structures like clinics, social workers and faithbased organisations closer to them in order to help learners cope with life’s intricacies. “Our area has been identified as having a high incidence of teenage pregnancies and so with the help of nurses from Zwide Clinic we were able to form a coherent relationship that is beneficial to our learners,” said Koltana. According to Koltana, children who face socio-economic challenges like any kind of abuse, HIV/Aids, sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy and TB preferred to speak to their peers rather than to teachers and parents. “Since the beginning of this programme, Zwide nurses have been very helpful in making learners open up,” Koltana said, adding that they felt it was therefore incumbent upon them to send messages of “support, appreciation, gratitude and love to nurses; for them to know that they mean a lot to the communityeven if they don’t get such affirmation every day.”

Bringing back the culture of debate to create thinktanks NCEBA DLADLA BRINGING back the culture of debate in schools will surely assist today’s learners into being critical thinkers of the future, said Nolitha Goba, a local entrepreneur whose initiative will see learners from four Motherwell High Schools engaged in a debate at Raymond Mhlaba Sports Centre in Motherwell from 12 noon today. The schools involved are Masiphathisane, Douglas Mbopha, Soqhayisa and Motherwell High Schools, said Debate Facilitator Stan Mosia. Radio personality Mosia told PE Express Indaba that he felt obliged to support this initiative by Goba, a female entrepreneur whose passion is in youth development. “I looked at the dying culture of extra-mural activities in our schools and felt it was im-
perative that I start this debate programme to help empower our learners,” said Goba, adding that the four schools were an easy pick because they were leading the pack (in Township schools) academically in the region and were already participating in debate. This pilot project, that is bank-rolled and supported by Motherwell Urban Renewal Programme (MURP) is meant to become an annual event, said Goba, a former PA to SA Insurance Association’s Communications Officer and former Innovations Media PRO, both jobs in Jozi. Goba who is armed with Beauty Therapy and Public Relations Diplomas passed matric from Victoria High School in 2004. She went to work in Johannesburg but came back to the city last year. “I decided to come and plough back here because charity begins at home,” said Goba.

Noloyiso eyes national radio or television for career path NCEBA DLADLA BAY TV’s 1 City News Programme has a new and fresh voice. The new kid on the block is Noloyiso Bonga. Noloyiso’s style and approach to news reporting is causing a stir and much interest in the Nelson Mandela Bay Community Television since April. Of course, Noloyiso is not new in the media. Like many before her, she cut her teeth in community radio and that has paved the way for many who have since made their names on national radio and TV. “I’ve got experience in radio but I enjoy every bit about the visuals that television provides. I believe in the power of community news,” Noloyiso told PE Express Indaba. This 26 year-old lass from KwaDwesi Extension in Port Elizabeth was a news reporter at KQ FM in Zwide before she joined Bay TV. Though her entrance into the news department was by sheer chance, Noloyiso cherishes
the moment she agreed when Thembinkosi Mbeda, her former News Editor at KQ FM, told her to prepare herself for a stint in the department as a reporter. At the time Noloyiso was doing a women’s magazine programme and current affairs. “He (Mbeda) saw the potential in me which I did not see at that moment. But I am happy and proud I agreed when he asked me,” said Noloyiso proudly. She counts veteran newshounds like the retired Umhlobo Wenene’s Fikile Lubisi (who now heads Emmanuel Haven FM Community Radio), Noxolo Grootboom, Siyavuya Sineke and Themba Makeleni, all of SABC TV News, as some of the people who continue to inspire her in her new career. “I see myself in future taking up a position as a news reporter in one of the country’s national radio stations or television,” said Noxolo who is armed with a National Diploma in Audio and Visual Production from MSC College (2006) and a Media Workshop’s National Certificate (2010). Noloyiso, who is a sports fanatic, has a black belt in karate. She also played rugby while growing up.
