NELSON Mandela Bay’s Integrated Public Transport System (IPTS) is back on track with 2010 Fifa World Cup executive director, Errol Heynes, being roped in as acting project manager, to get the wheels back in motion after the initial implementation process was marred by a succession of incidents halting its progress. Having submitted their proposed expenditure model to the National Department of Transport and the National Treasury yesterday - based on money allocated to the Nelson Mandela Bay IPTS - Heynes said it is all systems go to expedite the process. “Our approach is to roll out the project in phases,” said Heynes who explained to Express Indaba

there was no use in putting off the whole project while only certain elements had not yet been finalised. “We are doing careful operations planning to ensure efficiency of the roll out and aim to deliver an extensive and efficient network of public transport, incorporating buses, taxis and rail transport”. Although a firm time-line for completion has not yet been set, Heynes said new municipal manager, Themba Hani, added great impetus to the project and the team would speed along all aspects of the project. According to Heynes, there are still a number of infrastructural elements that demand attention. “The transport system calls for modal interchange stations, where different means of transport link up. “These stations will be modern, enclosed facili-

ties with points of sale where commuters can buy tickets”. Heynes said the initial pricing of the new public transport system would be in line with current public transport prices in the Metro. “But once we have reached critical mass, a real possibility exists that we will be able to offer public transport for less than current rates”. According to him, the objective of the IPTS is multi-tiered. “Not only will the new system allow residents of Port Elizabeth to move around the Metro with ease, it will also provide a more costeffective and environmentally friendly option to use private vehicles”. They are also looking into the possibility of having safe parking areas near certain modal interchange stations to ease access for motorists to the system .

Bafana striker and goal scorer Katlego Mphela is tussling for the ball against Ivory Coast de fender Didier Zokora in a friendly match played at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium last Satur day. This match fol lowed shortly after PSL teams Jomo Cosmos and Maritzburg United played here against Or lando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs respectively. Fans can look forward to more sporting activity in the stadium with the Rugby Sevens competi tion next month and more PSL matches in the new year. Murdered former Springbok, Tyibilika mourned NCEBA DLADLA THE South African rugby fraternity is still reeling in shock since the news of the murder of Solomzi “Solly” Tyibilika who was gunned down in Gugulethu township, in Cape Town on Sunday morning. According to media reports Tyibilika was murdered in a hail of bullets in a tavern in Gugulethu township. The reason for the murder was not known and no suspects were found. “Solly (Tyibilika) was a trailblazer among black African Springboks and if the reports are correct,

to lose him so suddenly and in this brutal manner is very distressing. The casual disregard for life in our society is shocking,” said SARU president, Oregan Hoskins. Tyibilika’s emergence, according to Hoskins, was a demonstration of what can be achieved when talent is combined with opportunity in what is always very competitive in Springbok rugby. Hoskins added that he remembers Tyibilika as “a very talented player who was an immensely likable young man who rose fast to become a Springbok early in his career.” A flank, Tyibilika, who was born and raised in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth 32 years ago, was a bright

star in South African rugby whose exploits were perhaps never fully utilised. He played for the Sharks, Griquas, Golden Lions and Border and represented his country eight times between 2004 and 2006. This highly talented star was part of the Southern Kings team that played against the British and Irish Lions in 2009. This Loyiso high school matriculant will be remembered as the first African black player to score a try for the Springboks. “I was shocked to hear the news. What a loss. Where in the world can we get another star like Tyibilika!” said Nelson Mandela Bay Sports Official Sthembiso Kiti.

KwaZakhele grocery robbers nabbed NCEBA DLADLA TWO Port Elizabeth suspects thought that they had their cupboards full for Christmas after robbing a KwaZakhele shop of groceries last Tuesday night, but police nabbed them and recovered their firearm, thanks to assistance from community members.

old suspect still in the shop where groceries were taken. The two suspects were expected to appear in court this week, said Warrant Officer Gwavu.

He thanked members of the community for their important role in the arrests. He added that the police appreciate the residents’ commitment in fighting crime.

According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu, six suspects entered the shop at Buyambo Street, KwaZakhele at about 10pm on Tuesday and robbed the owner of the shop at gunpoint. They allegedly took the groceries to one of the neighbouring houses in Seyisi, said W/O Gwavu. Police were alerted and when they arrived a 19-year-old suspect tried to run but was arrested after two police vans cornered him. A firearm (a .765 pistol) was found in the possession of the suspect with seven rounds of ammunition. Police arrested another 25-year-

Mandela Bay police report arrests NCEBA DLADLA NELSON MANDELA Bay members of the SA Police Service (SAPS) have reported more arrests in the Motherwell area over the weekend for murder, armed robbery, housebreaking and shop-lifting and also confiscated 2.1kg of dagga and arrested a 26 year old man from Despatch in possession of dagga.

On Sunday a 27 year old man and an 18 year old youth were arrested for murder that allegedly took place at Nyosi Street, NU11, Motherwell while two suspects aged 19 and 21 were arrested for armed robbery. More arrests were made in a stop and search operation: 18 for driving under the influence of alcohol, 27 for driving without licences, 44 for being drunk and disorderly, 10 for domestic violence, nine for assault with intent to do grievous bodily

harm, six for murder, six for armed robbery and three for possession of mandrax. “We arrested three people for shop-lifting, two people were arrested for rape, two for possession of stolen property, two for theft and others for different offences like theft of motor vehicle, pointing a fire-arm and so forth,” said Police Spokesperson Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu, adding that they were condemning the abuse of alcohol.

March against abuse NCEBA DLADLA PEOPLE opposed to the abuse of women and children in Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality are urged to converge at the Motherwell Police Station in Port Elizabeth to march to the nearest NU30 Hall in Motherwell on Thursday, November 29. “On this day the New Brighton Police Station in conjunction with the Motherwell Police Station’s Victim Support Centres will be launching this year’s 16 Days of Activism of No Violence against Women and Chil-

dren campaign,” said Susan Meintjies, a Volunteer Caregiver at the Victim Support Centre in New Brighton. Meintjies said the SAPS, Victim Support Centres in the metro, Nicro, Childline, Department of Social Development, Department of Justice and Department of Correctional Services, WAWA and SASSA will be there to support the victims of violence and abuse and to talk about the services they render. “We also want to appeal to people who are victims of violence and abuse not to suffer in silence. There is help, counselling and support out there. They must come,” said Meintjies.

Woman wanted for questioning

“There is great concern over the many cases of child abuse in Motherwell,” said SAPS Victim Support Centre Supervisor Constable Makaziwe Ngomane. “We have noticed that when couples fight they involve children in the fight to get to their spouses, boyfriends and girlfriends, and this is wrong,” said Const. Ngomane, adding that some children are abandoned at home or in the bush by women who cannot look after them. This campaign, she said, is meant to educate and warn especially women against child abuse in much the same way that it is a campaign of no violence and abuse against women.

NCEBA DLADLA UITENHAGE police are looking for this woman (pictured) who is said to be in either Uitenhage or Port Elizabeth.

They want to question her in connection with a case they are investigating. Anyone who might know the whereabouts of this woman are asked to contact Investigating Officer Constable Mncedi Gcukumana at 0 041 996 3056 (office) or cell 082 301 7948.

Owners urged to vaccinate against rabies soon NCEBA DLADLA THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Dog Control Unit has issued a warning to dog and cat owners in the Despatch and Perseverance areas to vaccinate them against rabies. This was after a meerkat tested positive for rabies last week forcing the Dog Unit to speedily carry out more than 400 vaccinations of animals in the area. Rabies is a viral disease that causes inflammation of the brain in warm-blood-

ed animals and it is transmitted by animals most commonly by a bite from the host that carries it. Explaining, Municipal spokesman Kupido Baron said rabies was suspected after a meerkat acted out of character and bit a dog in a fight two weeks ago. The meerkat was killed and then sent to and tested at the Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute of the University of Pretoria while the dog was placed in isolation in an attempt to stop the disease from spreading. “After the Onderstepoort results came back positive last Friday, the Dog Control

Unit worked feverishly to vaccinate as many cats and dogs as possible to contain the spread of the disease. We urge owners of dogs and cats to do the same,” said Baron, adding that another effective precautionary measure (before vaccination) is to wash a wound thoroughly with cold water and soap shortly after a bite. Residents should look out for a mobile unit currently busy in the area to treat the animals. To find out where to find the mobile unit residents can phone the municipality’s Dog Control Unit at 0 041 506 1743.

Young children taught police duties for safety NCEBA DLADLA “CHILDREN are the future and we need to keep them safe.”

ABSA donation boosts Umzi Wethu NCEBA DLADLA ABSA bank’s recent R500 000 sponsorship of Umzi Wethu programme, headed by the Wilderness Foundation in Port Elizabeth, has been welcomed as a good Corporate Social Investment (CSI) with equally good returns. A total of 50 underprivileged youth is currently being given an opportunity to obtain jobs in the hospitality and conservation industries, thanks to this investment. Founded in 2006 by Andrew Muir, CEO of the Wilderness Foundation, as one of the Foundations’s flagship social intervention projects, the international award-winning Umzi Wethu Programme heads two academies in the Eastern Cape. The hospitality academy

which trains students for jobs in the hospitality in both rural as well as urban establishments is based in Port Elizabeth whereas the conservation academy which focuses on training future conservation leaders as field rangers or field guides is based in Somerset East. Their third academy has just been opened outside of Cape Town. A delighted Muir has commended Absa for the fund which he believes will go a long way towards assisting them in their job creation endeavours focusing specially on the youth. “Having a corporate sponsor like Absa on board takes the project to the next level, and lays the foundation for expansion into other regions and industries,” said Muir. Training the displaced and socially vulnerable youth (aged 18 - 25) in the hospitality and eco-tourism sectors will

go a long way in ensuring that conducive job creation conditions prevail. “Under the prevailing economic conditions, job prospects are only available to the most highly qualified,” said Absa Corporate Social Investment General Manager, Mihloti Mathye, adding that the majority of the youth who have been severely affected by abject poverty and HIV/Aids, will never receive the opportunity of a higher education. Mathye noted that there were also very limited (job) opportunities in the Eastern Cape - it being one of the poorest provinces. “Through Absa’s partnership with the Wilderness Foundation, we know that the lives of these youngsters will be positively impacted. And this will have a ripple effect on their families who will also benefit from their job security,” said Mathye.

This was the crux of the message members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) delivered during their one-on-one talk with the teachers of Rainbow Nursery School at the Uitenhage Police Station

last Tuesday. With the 16 Days of Activism of No Violence Against Women and Children upon us (from 25 November to 10 December), Uitenhage police spokesperson Warrant Officer Gerda Swart said members of the SAPS felt it was import that they start now to educate little children about issues of their safety. “Police told them about the duties of the SAPS. These toddlers were

also educated on the dangers of strangers, and how to keep safe during the holiday season that is almost underway,” said W/O Swart, adding that the little ones had a ball enjoying sweets and other goodies. “They (the children) enjoyed spending time with the members at the Uitenhage Police Station and received treats from the members,” Warrant Officer Swart said.

Nelson Mandela Bay learners say no to striking teachers

NCEBA DLADLA

SOUTH African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) in the Eastern Cape Province have taken a stance to challenge the Department of Education on a number of issues that they disagree on, but decided to march to the Department of Education offices in Bhisho without disturbing school administration as learners in the country are currently sitting for their final year examinations. While teachers said the response of government will determine their next move, the decision not to down tools was welcomed as good news by the Nelson Mandela Bay learners that PE Express Indaba asked before the march.

Noneka Mfula a grade 12 learner from Khumbulani High School in Port Elizabeth thinks that strik ing teachers would jeopardise her plans to study and be come a pharma cist. “Striking teachers would affect our marks negatively. It would be bad. As students we can’t afford it. They must come to school and help us finish ex ams,” said Mfula. Photo: Nceba Dladla.

Alwaba Sambane (16) a Grade 9 learner speaking for fellow pupils, from left, Siphokazi Ndikinda, Zimkhitha Marwana and Ayanda Mza mo all from Lungisa High School in KwaDwesi said: “We’re happy they (teachers) are not striking. It’s not right. Our future depends on them. We’re writing exams and it would affect us adversely.’ Pho to: Nceba Dladla

Thandolwethu Zokoza (left) and Thulani Tanda both of Strelitzia High in Uitenhage don’t think the teachers should strike. “They can’t do that. We are writing final year examinations that are going to seal our future. It would be better if only a few marched while others remained in schools to help us write exams,” said Zokoza, while Tan da said: “If they were to strike, pressure would be on us. It would cost us badly. It is good they are not striking.” Photo: Nceba Dladla

Bafana’s draw impresses Bay fans NCEBA DLADLA BAFANA Bafana’s 1-1 draw with the number one team in Africa, the Ivory Coast, at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday is just what the doctor ordered to boost the confidence of the team as well as that of the fans. It was the first match for the local boys after failing to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (ACN) next year but an important match to start the journey towards 2013 CAF Africa Cup of Nations Competition and the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers in 2014. During this high-paced and physi-

cal match Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane used a lone striker in order to tighten the defence. Bafana defender Siboniso Gaxa who came in after Tsepho Masilela got injured in the 22nd minute scored an own goal in the 35th minute as the visitors, known as the Elephants, were on attack. But it was Bafana’s never-say-die attitude that saw them controlling the midfield with Bafana captain Steven Pienaar, who is back after a long absence, his deputy, Siphiwe Tshabalala, and Reneilwe Letsholonyane coming close to equalise matters in the first half. Katlego Mphela missed two clear chances before he scored his 22nd goal in 44 matches for Bafana and had the crowd in frenzy in the sec-

ond half that Bafana controlled from the outset. “This was a highly tactical and physical game but we played well,” said Mosimane, adding that he was still challenging South African coaches to provide him with a goalscoring striker to take the pressure off Mphela. Meanwhile, Ivory Coast Head Coach Francois Zahoui admitted in a press conference after the match that Bafana was a better team on the day. “We played well in the first 25 to 35 minutes of the first half but Bafana took over. They were the better team,” said Zahouis, adding he and his players were proud to have played Bafana in honour of Nelson Mandela.

Fans urged to support Bay Stars FC on Friday NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay Vodacom League outfit Bay Stars FC will be playing against the high-riding FC Tornado of the Buffalo City Municipality at the Gelvandale Stadium on Friday. Kick off is at 7 pm. Fresh from winning 1 - 0 against Mthatha Liverpool in an away game on Saturday, Bay Stars whose dream it is to compete in the National First Division next season will be pinning their hopes on the twelfth player – the fans – against last season’s Vodacom League runners-up FC Tornado who will be coming out strong.

“They (FC Tornado) ended up very high on the Vodacom League log last season and we are definitely not considering this to be a fluke on their part,” said Bay Stars coach Graham Harrison, suggesting that this is not going to be an easy match whatsoever. Harrison was, however, happy that the goalpoaching John Giannakis, who missed the Mthatha match owing to an injury, was back at training and likely to feature in this week’s match against Tornado. Harrison said that confidence in the team was high and they were sure to bring home the three points on offer. “It will be a tough encounter and we need to show the players that Nelson Mandela Bay is behind them
