Police hunt for cop killers NCEBA DLADLA
M
EMBERS of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Eastern Cape have condemned the cold-blooded killing of an offduty police officer, Warrant Officer Christopher Tatana Nontshinga, at his home in Port Elizabeth on Monday night.
According to Nophumzile, one of the men said “utata” (referring to her husband) should remember him as the one whose car was involved in an accident without a licence. “They asked him to go out with them and he went,” said Nophumzile. After a short while Warrant Officer Nontshinga returned without say-

ing a word. Seconds later the same men came back. One of them fired two gun shots, one hitting Nontshinga in his stomach. The men fled on foot. Nontshinga struggled to breathe and was certified dead before he arrived at the hospital. Nontshinga’s murder has been
condemned by senior police officials in the province who promised to work around the clock to bring the killers to book. “We will leave no stone unturned in our investigations until the perpetrators are brought to book,” said Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Celiwe Binta.
METRO MOURNS DEATH OF COUNCILLORS
Nontshinga (58), who was stationed at the Gelvandale Police Station, and the father of five children, was gunned down by unknown assailants at his KwaDwesi home in front of his family. His visibly distraught wife, Nophumzile, described to PE Express Indaba yesterday how three unknown men entered their Mnqurhunya Street home just after 8pm and asked to see her husband. She and their children were watching television in the diningroom while

I asked them why they wanted to see my husband, but just at that time he (Nontshinga) appeared from the room and also seemed not to know them,” said a tearful Nophumzile.
Executive Mayor Zonoxolo Wayile, councillors, church leaders, stakeholders and family members yesterday visited the accident scene where three councillors of Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality died in an accident on Sunday evening while returning from a course they attended at Fort Hare University’s East London campus. Text books strewn all over the roadside were the silent evidence of the tragedy that took place here. Full story on page 3. Photo: DEON FERREIRA

Mayor calls on private sector to help improve education THE NMBM will host an Education Summit in February where government departments, private sector and non-government organisations will meet to discuss challenges facing education and the skills development in the city. Executive mayor, Zanoxolo
Wayile, has called on the private sector to partner the NMBM and other spheres of government in initiatives to improve education. As part of the NMBM’s back to school campaign, Deputy Executive Mayor, Nancy Sihlwayi, handed over 10 000 lap desks to the De-
partment of Education to be distributed to needy schools in the city. Until the end of January the Education Task Team, set up by the NMBM, will engage in back to school campaigns across the city.

A very important part of the Back to School campaign is a school uniform collection drive. The NMBM is pleading with all residents, stakeholders, parents, school children and municipal officials to please donate old school uniforms and school shoes to give
to those in need. Residents who would like to hand in uniforms and school shoes can hand them to Bay TV, Bay FM, Nkqubela FM, Kingfisher FM, IFM and at the Port Elizabeth City Hall Bongani at the Executive Mayor’s Office.

LAST year’s disappointing 58.1 % matric pass rate in the Eastern Cape has resulted in a number of people and institutions coming up with what they believe is a solution for this poor performance. One of these is the introduction of Bayafunda, a publication of Ithuteng Dipuo Foundation (IDF) which was started and has recorded major successes in Potchefstroom in the North West Province in 2011. According to Bayafunda Eastern Cape spokesperson, Nkululelo Msauli, Bayafunda’s sister publication, Bana Balang, assisted learner performance and was acknowledged by the Education Department in the North West Province “hence a decision to spread the wings and assist poorly performing provinces like the East-
ern Cape,” he said. Explaining, Msauli said Bayafunda is a regular publication aimed at promoting reading, education and entrepreneurship among the target number of 500 000 isiXhosa-speaking youth in the Eastern Cape Province. Discovering that there is currently little reading material available to assist isiXhosa youth in their mother tongue, Msauli said, this unique magazine, Bayafunda, is expected to stimulate, entertain, inform and educate the isiXhosa speaking grade 1 - 12 group - in their mother tongue. “Bayafunda opens the world for learners and gives them a chance to succeed,” said Msauli, adding that the magazine will be delivered to schools around the province later this month – free of charge. They have their head-quarters in Newton Park, Port Elizabeth, and will also use East London and Mthatha as
their distribution points, Msauli said. Meanwhile, the Bayafunda Project, as part of its commitment to uplift local communities, last Friday organised a meal of soup and bread for about 50 homeless people who reside in the bushes at the Beacon in Summerstrand. The event was organised with the help of Spar, Pick n Pay (Summerstrand) and Newton Park Fruit and Veg City. A mobile clinic was also available at the event and the Walmer clinic staff offered primary health care services. Nicolene Adams (25) said she made use of the tests for sugar-diabetes, blood pressure and TB, amongst others, and with a clean bill of health, she was over the moon. “It was good. We had soup and bread and got tested,” said John Daniels (50) who was also given a clinic card to keep a constant check on his health.

Metro in mourning after death of councillors PE EXPRESS REPORTER EXECUTIVE Mayor Zonoxolo Wayile, councillors, church leaders, stakeholders and family members yesterday visited the accident scene where three councillors of Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality died in an accident on Sunday evening. Ward Councillors Mxolisi Gumenge, Phumeza Lose and Noncedo Ngqondi died in the accident, which also left 11 other Councillors with injuries of varied severity, namely, Councillors Mbongeni Bungane, Nomakhazi Cobo, Andile Gqabi, Thanduxolo Jacobs, Mzukisi Ncamani, Loyiso Stemele, Michael Tofile, Dyantyi, Linda Mlomo, Stephen Lindoor and Veliswa Ndidi. The Councillors were on their way back
from the first contact session this year as part of their studies at the Nelson Mandela Law School at the Fort Hare University’s East London campus. They were studying towards certificates in Local Government Law and Public Administration. The Quantum minibus they were travelling in left the road after the driver swerved out for a cow between Alexandria and Nanaga. Yesterday at the accident scene religious leaders, which included the Anglican Bishop Bethlehem Nopece, EC Moral Regeneration Movement President, Rev. Mcebisi Xundu and Inter-denominational African Ministers Association of Southern Africa (Idamasa) Bishop Sandile Jika, conducted a prayer service and wreath-laying. A Special Council Meeting was also held yesterday to discuss what the Metro needed to do to ensure that services to the affected
wards continue without any delays. The metro will be in mourning for two weeks, but councillors will address pressing service delivery issues if and when necessary, said speaker Maria Hermans. A Municipal Task Team was appointed to look into the memorial service and funeral arrangements for the councillors. Councillor Ngqondi was the Ward 15 Councillor, as well as the Chairperson of the Municipal Public Accounts Committee and was a representative of the African National Congress on the Budget and Financial Planning Standing Committee. Councillor Gumenge was the Ward Councillor in Ward 26 and was a member of Standing Committee for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture. Councillor Lose, the Ward Councillor for Ward 55, was a member of the Standing Committee for Electricity and Energy.

Pops Foundation wants to eliminate hunger and poverty NCEBA DLADLA People Opposing Poverty in Society, aka Pops, which was started early in 2011 as a NPO and also a Public benefit Organisation (PBO) from this month of January, is gradually becoming the giver of hope to hundreds of the poor and vulnerable children in Nelson Mandela Bay. The foundation headed by Mureedah Botha of Kabega Park in Port Elizabeth, is planning to open another soup kitchen in February. Pops, which is reliant on donations, assists 25 organisations and institutions. “Our aim is to eliminate hunger and poverty in our communities. Far too many kids are going to school and to bed on an empty stomach,” Mureedah said. Pops offers soup kitchens to children’s institutions, individual families in need and senior citizens. They have also adopted Kuyga Prima-
ry School where they provide meals three times per week to about 1100 pupils who come from impoverished backgrounds. With the help of sponsors and business leaders, Pops reached out to various underprivileged adults and children over the past few weeks. “At the beginning of the festive season, a Christmas party for 500 children who came from across the Nelson Mandela metro from areas such as KwaNobuhle, Zwide, New Brighton, Kuyga, Booysens Park, Walmer, Korsten and Helenvale, were held. It was a fun-filled day with live entertainment by local musician, Gino Lee, at the former EP Rugby Grounds Stadium (Boet Erasmus),” said Mureedah. Everyone received goodies generously sponsored by Toy Run PE. Those who would like to assist the foundation can contact Maureedah at 0 041 360 3910 or 0 083 738 8436.
